become_v man_n for_o our_o sake_n and_o be_v strong_a become_v weak_a for_o our_o sake_n and_o be_v glorious_a become_v contemptible_a for_o our_o sake_n and_o be_v lord_n of_o all_o become_v destitute_a of_o all_o thing_n for_o our_o sake_n and_o so_o in_o like_a sort_n he_o sweat_v and_o fear_v and_o fast_v and_o thirst_v and_o hunger_v and_o all_o for_o our_o sake_n and_o therefore_o of_o his_o fast_a the_o thing_n that_o be_v proper_a to_o this_o place_n the_o church_n speak_v thus_o in_o her_o prayer_n lent_n prayer_n collect_v on_o the_o first_o sunday_n in_o lent_n o_o lord_n which_o for_o our_o sake_n do_v fast_v forty_o day_n and_o forty_o night_n this_o than_o i_o take_v to_o be_v one_o reason_n he_o therefore_o fast_v in_o this_o manner_n and_o the_o rather_o perhaps_o may_v with_o more_o reverence_n and_o better_a attention_n and_o great_a fervour_n perform_v holy_a duty_n unto_o he_o in_o which_o kind_n they_o fast_o for_o christ_n who_o when_o they_o come_v to_o church_n to_o hear_v and_o pray_v and_o praise_n god_n and_o to_o partake_v of_o the_o bless_a sacrament_n of_o christ_n body_n do_v forbear_v their_o meat_n that_o they_o may_v be_v more_o fresh_a to_o attend_v to_o those_o holy_a duty_n and_o because_o they_o do_v prefer_v god_n service_n before_o their_o own_o necessity_n and_o do_v love_v the_o word_n and_o the_o sacrament_n more_o than_o their_o necessary_a food_n second_o we_o may_v be_v say_v to_o fast_v for_o christ_n if_o we_o fast_o that_o we_o may_v subdue_v those_o sin_n that_o nail_v christ_n to_o his_o cross_n and_o which_o if_o we_o commit_v they_o do_v 6.6_o do_v heb._n 6.6_o crucify_v again_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o make_v a_o mock_n of_o he_o and_o in_o this_o kind_n they_o fast_o for_o christ_n who_o forbear_v their_o meat_n that_o they_o may_v sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n and_o may_v arm_v themselves_o against_o temptation_n and_o bring_v under_o their_o body_n that_o their_o flesh_n do_v not_o wax_v christ_n do_v fast_o so_o long_o that_o he_o may_v supply_v we_o it_o be_v both_o sin_n and_o shame_n not_o to_o forbear_v a_o meal_n if_o need_v require_v that_o we_o may_v cherish_v christ_n in_o his_o member_n in_o this_o manner_n and_o by_o these_o mean_n we_o may_v be_v say_v to_o fast_v for_o christ_n let_v we_o make_v use_n of_o they_o in_o our_o practice_n and_o we_o shall_v hereby_o show_v our_o love_n to_o our_o saviour_n as_o he_o by_o fast_v forty_o day_n for_o we_o show_v his_o great_a love_n unto_o us._n ii_o a_o second_o cause_n why_o our_o lord_n fast_v at_o this_o time_n may_v be_v that_o he_o may_v by_o this_o mean_n provoke_v satan_n to_o begin_v his_o assault_n the_o declaration_n and_o proof_n of_o this_o assertion_n depend_v upon_o two_o thing_n first_o that_o his_o fast_n be_v a_o fit_a occasion_n that_o may_v provoke_v the_o devil_n to_o the_o onset_n second_o that_o christ_n be_v willing_a to_o give_v he_o such_o a_o occasion_n and_o first_o that_o this_o be_v a_o fit_a occasion_n appear_v by_o 2._o thing_n 1._o because_o when_o man_n be_v in_o distress_n then_o be_v the_o devil_n opportunity_n to_o tempt_v they_o either_o to_o distrust_n god_n because_o he_o leave_v they_o without_o relief_n or_o to_o use_v unlawful_a mean_n that_o they_o may_v relieve_v themselves_o 2._o because_o the_o event_n show_v that_o christ_n hunger_n cause_v by_o his_o fast_n be_v the_o occasion_n that_o satan_n take_v to_o assault_v he_o for_o when_o he_o see_v he_o faint_v for_o want_n of_o bread_n than_o he_o think_v it_o a_o fit_a time_n to_o say_v if_o thou_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n command_v that_o this_o stone_n be_v make_v bread_n and_o what_o the_o event_n do_v make_v manifest_a afterward_o that_o our_o lord_n know_v very_o well_o beforehand_o second_o that_o our_o lord_n be_v willing_a to_o give_v the_o devil_n such_o a_o occasion_n to_o provoke_v he_o to_o the_o combat_n may_v appear_v by_o two_o thing_n also_o 1._o because_o it_o be_v god_n will_v to_o have_v it_o so_o as_o be_v evident_a by_o this_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n lead_v he_o into_o the_o wilderness_n to_o be_v tempt_v of_o the_o devil_n and_o christ_n will_n be_v ever_o agreeable_a to_o the_o will_n of_o his_o father_n 2._o because_o christ_n do_v so_o thirst_n after_o our_o salvation_n that_o he_o refuse_v no_o pain_n nor_o no_o danger_n to_o procure_v it_o he_o leave_v heaven_n that_o he_o may_v become_v man_n for_o we_o he_o take_v our_o base_a nature_n that_o he_o may_v bear_v our_o infirmity_n and_o he_o go_v up_o to_o jerusalem_n that_o he_o may_v be_v crucify_v and_o he_o come_v into_o the_o world_n that_o he_o may_v save_v the_o world_n by_o his_o suffering_n and_o so_o see_v the_o temptation_n of_o satan_n by_o which_o he_o assault_v our_o saviour_n may_v be_v profitable_a for_o we_o and_o available_a for_o our_o salvation_n for_o so_o satan_n may_v be_v overcome_v at_o his_o own_o weapon_n and_o we_o arm_v against_o his_o assault_n afterward_o we_o need_v not_o doubt_v but_o as_o the_o spirit_n lead_v christ_n into_o the_o wilderness_n to_o be_v tempt_v of_o the_o devil_n so_o our_o lord_n himself_o will_v fast_o and_o hunger_n that_o the_o devil_n may_v assault_v he_o and_o here_o again_o by_o the_o way_n a_o christian_a may_v have_v a_o good_a meditation_n from_o his_o master_n practice_n that_o see_v christ_n be_v ready_a to_o fight_v against_o the_o devil_n for_o our_o sake_n we_o shall_v not_o fear_v to_o stand_v out_o against_o man_n for_o his_o sake_n but_o if_o religion_n be_v a_o cause_n that_o we_o be_v question_v by_o enemy_n or_o disgrace_v by_o worldling_n or_o keep_v from_o preferment_n by_o great_a one_o we_o must_v bear_v opposition_n of_o man_n for_o love_n to_o christ_n as_o he_o bear_v these_o temptation_n of_o the_o devil_n for_o love_n unto_o us._n iii_o a_o three_o cause_n may_v be_v that_o by_o this_o exercise_n of_o fast_v he_o may_v prepare_v and_o fit_v himself_o for_o the_o great_a work_n that_o he_o be_v about_o for_o he_o be_v now_o to_o enter_v upon_o his_o prophetical_a office_n and_o to_o begin_v the_o public_a function_n of_o his_o ministry_n and_o in_o this_o and_o such_o like_a case_n as_o this_o god_n servant_n have_v use_v to_o make_v preparation_n by_o fast_v and_o prayer_n as_o may_v be_v see_v in_o the_o example_n of_o 13.3_o of_o act._n 13.3_o paul_n and_o barnabas_n and_o 14.23_o and_o act._n 14.23_o other_o presbyter_n of_o diverse_a church_n and_o therefore_o see_v our_o lord_n here_o fast_v for_o a_o long_a space_n and_o that_o at_o such_o a_o time_n as_o he_o be_v to_o enter_v upon_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n we_o may_v well_o think_v that_o this_o be_v one_o reason_n of_o his_o fast_n that_o he_o may_v prepare_v
