from_o under_o the_o promise_n of_o these_o gift_n as_o first_o these_o gift_n differ_v much_o from_o the_o rest_n chief_o in_o this_o that_o they_o may_v be_v supply_v another_o way_n for_o the_o conversion_n of_o person_n of_o all_o language_n or_o such_o as_o can_v speak_v other_o language_n and_o interpret_v the_o same_o to_o other_o do_v supply_v the_o absence_n of_o those_o gift_n 2._o the_o church_n in_o this_o and_o i_o suppose_v other_o nation_n tongue_n have_v very_o little_a need_n of_o these_o gift_n and_o therefore_o consider_v that_o they_o be_v not_o so_o necessary_a as_o the_o rest_n the_o apostle_n leave_v these_o with_o a_o forbid_v they_o not_o whilst_o the_o rest_n he_o will_v we_o to_o c●u●t_v earnest_o but_o 3_o one_o great_a cause_n as_o i_o conceive_v why_o these_o gift_n be_v so_o much_o absent_a and_o the_o other_o no_o more_o receive_v i●_n because_o we_o either_o ask_v they_o not_o at_o all_o or_o else_o we_o ask_v they_o amiss_o for_o many_o have_v be_v so_o ●ar_o from_o a_o king_n these_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o in_o truth_n they_o have_v be_v argue_v that_o these_o gift_n be_v not_o attainable_a and_o then_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n they_o have_v not_o be_v receive_v again_o where_o there_o have_v be_v some_o understanding_n of_o the_o interest_n we_o have_v in_o those_o gift_n there_o faith_n in_o ask_v have_v be_v and_o be_v very_o low_a and_o atend_v perhaps_o with_o great_a waver_a and_o then_o little_o can_v be_v expect_v at_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o almighty_a jam._n 1._o and_o here_o let_v i_o premonish_v you_o of_o one_o thing_n which_o by_o my_o little_a read_n i_o perceive_v to_o have_v be_v a_o great_a provocation_n to_o the_o lord_n to_o withdraw_v his_o gift_n in_o time_n p●st_v and_o i_o fear_v it_o again_o and_o that_o be_v ●and_n and_o i_o doubt_n be_v a_o over_o curious_a performance_n of_o that_o which_o god_n give_v spiritual_a gift_n for_o to_o wit_v the_o minister_a of_o the_o word_n when_o the_o church_n grow_v populous_a and_o great_a personage_n come_v to_o her_o communion_n the_o unwary_a pastor_n let_v go_v the_o simplicity_n of_o th●_n gospel_n incline_v so_o much_o to_o curiosity_n that_o some_o counsel_n decree_v tha●_n a_o b●shop_n shall_v not_o read_v heathen_a author_n and_o gra●ian_n be_v say_v to_o have_v this_o passage_n viz._n do_v not_o he_o seem_v to_o wa●k_v in_o vanit●_n and_o da●kness_n of_o mind_n who_o vex_v himself_o day_n a●d_v night_n in_o the_o study_n of_o logic_n in_o the_o pursuit_n of_o physical_a speculation_n one_o while_o elevate_v himself_o above_o the_o high_a heaven_n and_o afterward_o throw_v himself_o below_o the_o nethermost_a part_n of_o the_o earth_n true_a the_o use_n that_o may_v be_v make_v o●_n read_v be_v one_o thing_n and_o the_o abuse_v another_o however_o let_v the_o least_o gift_n o●_n god_n be_v prefer_v in_o the_o ministry_n o●_n the_o word_n above_o the_o great_a of_o human_a art_n otherwise_o we_o be_v in_o danger_n to_o incur_v the_o guilt_n of_o despise_v prophysying_n last_o the_o truth_n in_o hand_n appear_v from_o &c_n the_o silence_n of_o scripture_n touch_v th●_n privation_n of_o any_o of_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n till_o that_o which_o be_v perfect_a become_v 1._o ●or_a 13._o 8._o 9_o charity_n never_o fail_v but_o whether_o there_o be_v prophecy_v they_o shall_v fail_v whether_o there_o be_v tongue_n they_o shall_v cease_v whether_o there_o be_v knowledge_n it_o shall_v vanish_v away_o for_o we_o know_v in_o part_n and_o we_o prophe●●e_v in_o part_n but_o when_o that_o which_o be_v perfect_a be_v come_v than_o that_o which_o be_v in_o part_n shall_v be_v do_v away_o hence_o observe_v a_o final_a determination_n of_o the_o matter_n in_o question_n if_o any_o ask_v when_o the_o gift_n of_o prophysie_n knowledge_n and_o tongue_n etc._n etc._n shall_v cease_v the_o apostle_n answer_n be_v even_o than_o when_o that_o which_o be_v perfect_a be_v come_v or_o when_o we_o come_v to_o see_v face_n to_o face_n or_o as_o we_o be_v see_v so_o then_o see_v the_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n do_v yet_o remain_v to_o the_o church_n and_o every_o of_o they_o as_o her_o need_n require_v be_v attainable_a it_o remain_v that_o we_o humble_o consider_v our_o want_n and_o desire_v spiritual_a gift_n you_o ●ove●_n earnest_o the_o best_a gift_n from_o these_o consideration_n i_o conclude_v that_o howsoever_o it_o be_v too_o true_a that_o the_o gift_n receive_v by_o the_o present_a church_n be_v but_o low_a and_o true_o so_o be_v her_o grace_n yet_o thence_o we_o may_v not_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o infer_v that_o the_o gift_n promise_v be_v cease_v or_o that_o the_o church_n have_v now_o no_o interest_n therein_o but_o contrariwise_o as_o the_o promise_n of_o gift_n as_o well_o as_o grace_n pertain_v to_o we_o as_o we_o be_v the_o call_v of_o god_n we_o ought_v to_o stir_v one_o another_o up_o to_o seek_v with_o all_o 4._o diligence_n and_o full_a assurance_n for_o the_o spirit_n of_o promise_n which_o be_v receive_v will_v abundant_o supply_v our_o want_n help_v our_o infirmity_n convince_v the_o contrary_n mind_v by_o its_o powerful_a evidence_n and_o demonstration_n in_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o prayer_n there_o be_v two_o thing_n object_v against_o that_o which_o be_v say_v the_o first_o ob_fw-la if_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o spirit_n do_v thus_o belong_v to_o the_o church_n than_o this_o will_v follow_v that_o the_o doctrine_n deliver_v by_o such_o gift_a man_n must_v pass_v for_o oracle_n of_o god_n
