god_n in_o christ_n only_o to_o another_o though_o he_o worship_n god_n in_o and_o by_o mere_a creature_n and_o not_o in_o and_o by_o christ_n only_o yet_o he_o shall_v be_v save_v and_o god_n will_v accept_v he_o this_o be_v self-delusion_n and_o false_a trust_n and_o self-delusion_n and_o selfconfidence_n be_v both_o act_n and_o object_n 3._o a_o idol_n be_v nothing_o in_o the_o world_n 1_o cor._n 8.4_o that_o be_v as_o i_o conceive_v set_v aside_o the_o inward_a ungodly_a lust_n and_o false_a belief_n which_o be_v in_o man_n heart_n and_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o a_o idol_n god_n now_o man_n come_v to_o have_v idol_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o commit_v spiritual_a whoredom_n and_o adultery_n some_o make_v the_o belly_n their_o god_n some_o idolise_v money_n some_o worldly_a glory_n some_o beauty_n some_o learning_n some_o their_o error_n some_o angel_n and_o depart_a saint_n some_o image_n these_o be_v various_a way_n of_o idolatry_n but_o still_o it_o be_v the_o mind_n within_o as_o ungodly_a which_o make_v the_o idol_n and_o all_o idolatry_n whatsoever_o be_v a_o transcendent_a vice_n the_o worship_n of_o a_o false_a god_n and_o be_v repugnant_a to_o holy_a belief_n in_o god._n as_o god_n be_v not_o two_o a_o material_a god_n and_o a_o formal_a god_n so_o idolatry_n be_v not_o two_o material_a and_o formal_a but_o all_o idolatry_n be_v a_o breach_n of_o the_o first_o commandment_n and_o repugnant_a to_o godly_a sincerity_n no_o man_n do_v or_o can_v in_o the_o commission_n of_o idolatry_n intend_v to_o commit_v it_o but_o real_o he_o do_v commit_v it_o he_o do_v that_o which_o by_o the_o divine_a law_n be_v idolatry_n the_o commission_n of_o idolatry_n and_o intention_n to_o commit_v it_o differ_v specifical_o and_o can_v possible_o concur_v in_o one_o and_o the_o fame_n indivisible_a act_n as_o one_o and_o the_o same_o indivisible_a act_n can_v possible_o be_v two_o acts._n 4._o the_o substance_n of_o divine_a worship_n be_v unalterable_o fix_v by_o god_n and_o all_o addition_n to_o it_o and_o all_o diminution_n from_o it_o be_v idolatry_n a_o deify_n of_o man_n understanding_n and_o will_n and_o set_v it_o above_o the_o understanding_n and_o will_n of_o god._n but_o there_o be_v many_o thing_n respect_v the_o outward_a mode_n and_o order_n of_o god_n worship_n about_o which_o the_o scripture_n give_v only_o general_a rule_n the_o fit_v whereof_o to_o particular_a case_n be_v leave_v to_o man_n wisdom_n and_o discretion_n dependent_o upon_o god_n as_o judge_n of_o all_o the_o world._n touch_v the_o substance_n of_o god_n worship_n nothing_o be_v a_o duty_n but_o what_o have_v a_o divine_a command_n and_o plain_a warrant_n in_o god_n word_n touch_v thing_n in_o themselves_o indifferent_a and_o be_v superstition_n yet_o all_o superstition_n and_o vain_a desire_n be_v not_o idolatry_n but_o if_o superstition_n reign_n than_o it_o be_v idolatry_n before_o god_n though_o not_o before_o men._n and_o then_o do_v superstition_n and_o error_n reign_v when_o person_n lay_v their_o salvation_n on_o it_o and_o trust_v in_o their_o error_n for_o life_n eternal_a bare_a desire_v the_o prayer_n of_o angel_n and_o depart_a saint_n be_v not_o prayer_n and_o invocation_n in_o the_o strict_a sense_n and_o therefore_o i_o conceive_v it_o be_v not_o idolatry_n though_o all_o prayer_n be_v desire_n yet_o all_o desire_n be_v not_o prayer_n in_o the_o strict_a sense_n bare_a desire_v the_o prayer_n of_o angel_n and_o depart_a saint_n do_v suppose_v they_o to_o know_v what_o indeed_o they_o do_v not_o know_v and_o so_o it_o be_v erroneous_a and_o vain_a desire_n but_o it_o do_v not_o necessary_o suppose_v they_o to_o be_v simple_o
