usual_o prefaced_a unto_o by_o a_o public_a feast_n of_o charity_n which_o be_v call_v in_o antiquity_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d a_o love-feast_n to_o which_o you_o have_v frequent_a reference_n in_o the_o new_a testament_n to_o this_o feast_n every_o one_o contribute_v and_o bring_v some_o portion_n according_a to_o his_o ability_n of_o which_o all_o feast_v love_o together_o reserve_v some_o portion_n for_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n which_o they_o always_o celebrate_v in_o the_o close_a of_o this_o feast_n now_o this_o grand_a profanation_n of_o this_o holy_a service_n happen_v thus_o instead_o of_o feed_v love_o all_o together_o of_o what_o be_v thus_o bring_v by_o all_o each_o one_o feed_v single_o upon_o his_o own_o portion_n by_o which_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v not_o only_o that_o the_o poor_a have_v little_a or_o nothing_o to_o eat_v but_o the_o rich_a have_v too_o much_o which_o bring_v they_o to_o excess_n and_o even_o to_o plain_a drunkenness_n one_o be_v hungry_a and_o another_o drink_v in_o which_o sad_a condition_n approach_v to_o the_o table_n of_o the_o lord_n they_o be_v very_o unfit_a to_o consider_v the_o sacredness_n of_o it_o and_o very_o unlike_a to_o pay_v that_o reverence_n that_o be_v due_a to_o it_o that_o both_o these_o thing_n contribute_v to_o their_o not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n and_o in_o consequence_n of_o that_o eat_n and_o drink_v unworthy_o we_o may_v full_o satisfy_v ourselves_o by_o consider_v the_o apostle_n deal_v with_o they_o in_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o this_o chapter_n where_o he_o fall_v upon_o this_o argument_n for_o because_o they_o be_v so_o gross_o ignorant_a in_o the_o reason_n and_o design_n of_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n he_o explain_v that_o full_o to_o they_o from_o verse_n 22d_o and_o fit_a in_o itself_o than_o to_o keep_v up_o in_o the_o christian_a church_n the_o solemn_a and_o most_o grateful_a remembrance_n of_o christ_n death_n and_o they_o that_o can_v think_v otherwise_o be_v unworthy_a to_o share_v in_o the_o benefit_n of_o it_o beside_o the_o institute_n of_o it_o to_o this_o end_n make_v it_o perpetual_o oblige_v also_o i_o mean_v to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n and_o as_o long_o as_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o christian_a church_n in_o it_o for_o so_o long_o it_o will_v be_v fit_a to_o keep_v up_o the_o memory_n of_o it_o and_o this_o reason_n will_v not_o only_o hold_v but_o improve_v and_o grow_v strong_a in_o every_o succeed_a age_n and_o period_n of_o the_o world_n in_o which_o the_o sense_n and_o memory_n of_o it_o will_v be_v in_o danger_n to_o expire_v and_o wear_v off_o so_o that_o every_o such_o age_n will_v rather_o have_v great_a than_o lesser_a reason_n to_o keep_v up_o this_o solemn_a commemoration_n of_o it_o 3._o to_o these_o intimation_n i_o may_v add_v one_o thing_n very_o considerable_a to_o our_o purpose_n from_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o apostle_n and_o the_o circumstance_n of_o his_o discourse_n in_o this_o chapter_n a_o learned_a man_n have_v take_v notice_n of_o they_o before_o i_o so_o that_o i_o shall_v but_o just_a name_n they_o first_o that_o the_o apostle_n take_v so_o much_o pain_n to_o instruct_v the_o corinthian_n in_o the_o right_a way_n of_o communicate_v in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o to_o reform_v the_o profanation_n of_o it_o that_o they_o be_v guilty_a of_o now_o can_v any_o man_n reasonable_o think_v that_o he_o will_v have_v do_v this_o if_o he_o have_v not_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o necessary_a duty_n tie_v upon_o christian_n by_o christ_n own_o command_n and_o institution_n certain_o no_o he_o that_o give_v direction_n how_o to_o do_v a_o duty_n suppose_v the_o obligation_n and_o necessity_n of_o it_o or_o else_o he_o speak_v to_o little_a purpose_n and_o as_o that_o great_a man_n speak_v can_v any_o man_n think_v the_o way_n and_o manner_n of_o do_v a_o action_n to_o be_v a_o duty_n and_o yet_o that_o action_n itself_o no_o duty_n this_o be_v not_o supposable_a and_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a the_o apostle_n will_v never_o have_v spend_v so_o great_a a_o part_n of_o this_o chapter_n in_o direct_v how_o to_o eat_v and_o drink_v how_o to_o order_v and_o prepare_v themselves_o for_o it_o but_o that_o he_o look_v on_o it_o as_o a_o duty_n necessary_o incumbent_a on_o they_o nor_o be_v so_o impertinent_a as_o to_o concern_v and_o busy_v himself_o in_o direct_v the_o circumstance_n of_o a_o action_n which_o be_v not_o necessary_a to_o be_v do_v but_o arbitrary_a and_o at_o their_o pleasure_n whether_o to_o do_v it_o or_o no._n the_o second_o circumstance_n be_v what_o i_o observe_v before_o that_o he_o do_v this_o even_a when_o the_o corinthian_n run_v a_o very_a great_a hazard_n and_o incur_v a_o grand_a guilt_n by_o their_o profanation_n of_o this_o service_n and_o come_v so_o unworthy_o to_o it_o certain_o have_v the_o apostle_n look_v upon_o this_o as_o any_o thing_n less_o than_o a_o necessary_a duty_n he_o will_v have_v go_v another_o way_n to_o work_v with_o they_o he_o will_v have_v discourse_v to_o they_o at_o another_o rate_n and_o have_v tell_v they_o it_o be_v much_o the_o better_o and_o safe_a way_n to_o stay_v away_o from_o the_o sacrament_n than_o incur_v so_o great_a guilt_n and_o punishment_n by_o come_v so_o unworthy_o this_o will_v have_v be_v the_o advice_n that_o a_o great_a many_o man_n now_o according_a to_o their_o principle_n will_v have_v give_v to_o they_o and_o indeed_o do_v give_v themselves_o and_o other_o too_o but_o it_o be_v evident_a the_o apostle_n speak_v not_o one_o word_n to_o this_o purpose_n nor_o know_v of_o any_o warrant_n he_o have_v to_o do_v so_o he_o have_v no_o authority_n to_o grant_v they_o any_o indulgence_n or_o licence_n to_o stay_v away_o though_o they_o be_v apt_a to_o come_v so_o very_o unfit_o he_o be_v to_o recommend_v it_o as_o a_o necessary_a duty_n and_o to_o press_v the_o serious_a and_o become_a observation_n of_o it_o but_o he_o have_v receive_v no_o warrant_n from_o the_o lord_n to_o dispense_v with_o that_o observation_n he_o will_v have_v they_o to_o look_v upon_o the_o sacrament_n as_o a_o necessary_a stand_a service_n of_o their_o religion_n to_o count_v it_o their_o duty_n to_o eat_v and_o drink_v and_o his_o province_n be_v only_o to_o direct_v they_o how_o they_o may_v do_v it_o acceptable_o and_o not_o to_o their_o condemnation_n these_o consideration_n be_v sufficient_a to_o convince_v all_o christian_n that_o this_o be_v a_o plain_a necessary_a indispensable_a duty_n institute_v and_o intend_v by_o express_v in_o these_o word_n in_o remembrance_n of_o i_o this_o do_v in_o remembrance_n of_o i_o which_o reason_n do_v clear_o show_v this_o precept_n to_o be_v no_o temporary_a one_o only_o but_o gratitude_n be_v to_o a_o great_a benefactor_n or_o any_o instance_n of_o natural_a religion_n be_v to_o god_n and_o certain_o he_o that_o think_v otherwise_o dishonour_n and_o disparage_v this_o love_n and_o make_v himself_o for_o ever_o unworthy_a of_o it_o if_o ever_o any_o love_n be_v worthy_a to_o be_v remember_v if_o ever_o any_o thing_n that_o god_n do_v for_o man_n deserve_v and_o may_v in_o justice_n challenge_v our_o high_a gratitude_n and_o praise_n this_o certain_o do_v and_o i_o will_v to_o god_n that_o some_o man_n will_v remember_v this_o and_o remember_v this_o too_o how_o they_o can_v hope_v for_o the_o benefit_n of_o it_o and_o yet_o neglect_v to_o remember_v it_o and_o to_o remember_v it_o by_o that_o which_o himself_o have_v appoint_v to_o be_v the_o solemn_a rite_n of_o that_o commemoration_n 2._o i_o say_v perpetual_o oblige_v too_o and_o this_o i_o say_v now_o not_o only_o upon_o the_o former_a reason_n that_o its_o end_n be_v a_o moral_a good_a and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o service_n will_v in_o every_o age_n continue_v the_o same_o but_o there_o be_v another_o consideration_n which_o will_v make_v it_o to_o improve_v and_o grow_v strong_a and_o strong_a for_o time_n be_v a_o grand_a consumer_n and_o waster_n of_o thing_n and_o the_o memory_n of_o the_o great_a kindness_n and_o blessing_n in_o a_o long_a tract_n of_o time_n be_v apt_a to_o decay_v and_o wear_v off_o of_o man_n mind_n so_o that_o the_o further_a that_o man_n live_v off_o from_o the_o time_n of_o our_o saviour_n passion_n the_o more_o danger_n they_o be_v in_o of_o forget_v it_o and_o the_o more_o need_n they_o have_v of_o something_o to_o fix_v it_o the_o more_o deep_o and_o indelible_o upon_o their_o mind_n so_o that_o this_o reason_n will_v still_o improve_v and_o we_o therefore_o that_o live_v at_o this_o distance_n of_o sixteen_o hundred_o year_n from_o it_o have_v need_n to_o be_v more_o observant_a of_o this_o institution_n to_o refresh_v our_o sacrament_n be_v but_o just_a such_o argument_n and_o engagement_n upon_o we_o to_o become_v good_a man_n as_o our_o faith_n in_o the_o divine_a promise_n be_v which_o be_v all_o make_v to_o we_o very_o fit_a those_o two_o monster_n shall_v be_v bear_v together_o to_o let_v the_o world_n see_v how_o gigantic_a the_o faith_n of_o a_o romanist_n be_v and_o i_o will_v say_v those_o that_o can_v believe_v the_o infallibility_n of_o their_o pope_n after_o so_o many_o instance_n of_o their_o have_v err_v and_o contradict_v one_o another_o may_v believe_v the_o doctrine_n of_o transubstantiation_n contrary_a to_o all_o and_o the_o plain_a evidence_n of_o thing_n that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o mankind_n to_o have_v but_o i_o be_o not_o for_o admit_v dispute_n or_o bodily_a and_o the_o effect_n and_o benefit_n of_o christ_n body_n and_o blood_n be_v real_a thing_n too_o so_o that_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v real_o and_o true_o there_o where_o all_o the_o effect_n and_o blessing_n of_o they_o be_v real_o bestow_v and_o the_o church_n of_o england_n do_v true_o say_v that_o they_o be_v very_o and_o indeed_o take_v and_o receive_v by_o the_o faithful_a in_o the_o lord_n supper_n when_o all_o the_o real_a benefit_n and_o effect_n of_o they_o be_v take_v and_o receive_v by_o they_o this_o i_o be_o pretty_a well_o assure_v be_v all_o that_o the_o primitive_a church_n and_o father_n mean_v by_o the_o real_a presence_n and_o this_o be_v sufficient_a both_o for_o our_o faith_n and_o comfort_v too_o and_o while_o argument_n and_o obligation_n to_o reverence_n and_o devotion_n in_o this_o service_n as_o can_v never_o miss_v effect_n upon_o they_o that_o entertain_v the_o thought_n of_o it_o for_o if_o we_o do_v thus_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n and_o take_v the_o bread_n and_o wine_n in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n not_o only_o to_o be_v the_o sign_n and_o symbol_n of_o our_o lord_n body_n and_o blood_n but_o in_o a_o sacramental_a
and_o after_o the_o holy_a comunion_n and_o we_o may_v common_o see_v that_o they_o do_v so_o man_n have_v general_o more_o veneration_n for_o religion_n than_o to_o go_v drink_v to_o church_n or_o dare_v to_o appear_v before_o god_n when_o they_o be_v so_o unfit_a to_o do_v so_o and_o yet_o even_o these_o man_n have_v a_o high_a sense_n of_o and_o a_o great_a veneration_n for_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n than_o other_o service_n of_o religion_n and_o a_o mighty_a horror_n and_o dread_n of_o come_v careless_o and_o without_o respect_n unto_o it_o yea_o the_o very_a same_o man_n that_o dare_v so_o irreverent_o and_o regardless_o attend_v other_o ministery_n of_o religion_n yet_o be_v see_v to_o be_v very_o serious_a and_o devout_a in_o this_o they_o that_o can_v sit_v at_o prayer_n as_o if_o god_n be_v rather_o petition_v and_o pray_v to_o they_o than_o they_o to_o he_o they_o that_o can_v lay_v themselves_o down_o to_o sleep_v at_o a_o sermon_n and_o perhaps_o soon_o fall_v into_o sleep_n on_o a_o hard_a bench_n there_o than_o the_o soft_a down_n in_o their_o own_o house_n they_o in_o a_o word_n that_o can_v behave_v themselves_o in_o god_n house_n with_o as_o little_a reverence_n and_o show_v of_o devotion_n as_o they_o do_v in_o a_o warehouse_n or_o a_o stable_a yet_o when_o they_o approach_v the_o table_n of_o the_o lord_n seem_v general_o very_o reverend_a and_o devout_a and_o i_o hope_v real_o be_v so_o 5._o there_o be_v yet_o a_o five_o thing_n that_o may_v pertinent_o be_v observe_v as_o of_o effect_n to_o secure_a man_n against_o this_o profanation_n of_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o that_o be_v their_o have_v be_v so_o long_o teach_v what_o a_o mighty_a deal_n of_o preparation_n be_v necessary_a to_o it_o and_o have_v be_v so_o loud_o alarm_v with_o the_o great_a danger_n of_o communicate_v unworthy_o in_o it_o this_o have_v be_v the_o current_a doctrine_n and_o the_o common_a way_n of_o deal_n with_o man_n for_o some_o age_n the_o great_a business_n of_o the_o good_a father_n be_v not_o to_o persuade_v man_n to_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n for_o that_o they_o always_o account_v their_o necessary_a duty_n and_o till_o this_o last_o age_n none_o ever_o count_v to_o pass_v for_o christian_n that_o neglect_v it_o and_o therefore_o their_o business_n be_v only_o to_o direct_v the_o zeal_n and_o devotion_n of_o christian_n in_o this_o instance_n and_o not_o to_o excite_v it_o to_o direct_v and_o instruct_v man_n how_o to_o come_v acceptable_o and_o as_o they_o ought_v and_o not_o to_o argue_v with_o they_o about_o the_o duty_n of_o come_v and_o therefore_o there_o be_v so_o much_o meet_v with_o in_o their_o write_n about_o the_o necessity_n and_o way_n of_o due_a preparation_n and_o so_o little_a about_o the_o obligation_n to_o come_v many_o book_n write_v to_o instruct_v man_n in_o the_o method_n of_o due_a preparation_n but_o there_o be_v no_o necessity_n of_o insist_v upon_o that_o which_o be_v our_o chief_a task_n and_o business_n at_o present_a for_o in_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o this_o feculent_a and_o almost_o worst_a of_o age_n man_n have_v run_v their_o instruction_n and_o doctrine_n into_o the_o other_o extreme_a press_v so_o much_o the_o necessity_n of_o a_o extraordinary_a preparation_n and_o aggravate_v so_o mighty_o the_o danger_n of_o receive_v unworthy_o that_o man_n be_v fright_v from_o the_o sacrament_n rather_o than_o invite_v to_o it_o and_o have_v think_v it_o as_o i_o say_v before_o safe_o to_o keep_v whole_o from_o it_o than_o to_o run_v so_o great_a a_o hazard_n in_o the_o observation_n thereof_o these_o thing_n we_o find_v stick_v fast_o in_o man_n mind_n yet_o and_o it_o be_v a_o hard_a thing_n to_o dispossess_v they_o of_o that_o superstitious_a fear_n that_o these_o doctrine_n have_v strike_v they_o with_o man_n be_v now_o in_o more_o danger_n to_o run_v into_o the_o contrary_a extreme_a than_o to_o fall_v into_o this_o in_o more_o danger_n to_o stay_v whole_o from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o this_o dread_n of_o it_o than_o to_o run_v to_o it_o careless_o and_o without_o any_o due_a regard_n of_o the_o sacredness_n of_o it_o upon_o these_o reason_n it_o may_v i_o think_v safe_o be_v say_v that_o christian_n now_o be_v in_o little_a danger_n of_o this_o sin_n and_o almost_o out_o of_o a_o possibility_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o text_n and_o which_o the_o apostle_n tax_v the_o corinthian_n for_o sect_n iii_o have_v proceed_v so_o far_o upon_o the_o strict_a sense_n of_o this_o place_n and_o the_o direct_a design_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o it_o i_o go_v on_o to_o a_o material_a scruple_n and_o a_o very_a important_a inquiry_n very_o fit_a to_o be_v consider_v and_o resolve_v and_o that_o be_v whether_o nothing_o be_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o beside_o this_o do_v a_o man_n never_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o but_o when_o he_o come_v drink_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n do_v not_o this_o open_a a_o gate_n to_o very_o great_a looseness_n and_o carelessness_n and_o make_v communicate_v worthy_o a_o very_a light_n and_o easy_a thing_n to_o what_o purpose_n need_v the_o good_a father_n of_o the_o church_n to_o have_v take_v so_o much_o pain_n to_o direct_v man_n how_o to_o fit_v and_o prepare_v themselves_o for_o this_o service_n and_o have_v press_v the_o observance_n of_o those_o prescription_n with_o so_o much_o earnestness_n as_o they_o do_v if_o this_o where_o the_o only_a instance_n in_o which_o man_n can_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o this_o i_o call_v a_o very_a considerable_a inquiry_n and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o give_v it_o as_o plain_a and_o full_a satisfaction_n as_o i_o be_o able_a it_o seem_v to_o consist_v of_o several_a part_n to_o all_o which_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o suit_v proper_a answer_n in_o these_o follow_a proposition_n 1._o whatever_o man_n may_v say_v or_o think_v in_o this_o matter_n this_o only_a be_v that_o eat_n and_o drink_v unworthy_o that_o the_o apostle_n mean_v in_o this_o place_n and_o to_o which_o he_o threaten_v this_o punishment_n this_o i_o have_v clear_v already_o and_o need_v not_o stand_v repeat_v it_o again_o not_o consider_v the_o lord_n body_n but_o eat_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n as_o a_o common_a meal_n be_v as_o regardless_o and_o intemperate_a at_o the_o lord_n table_n as_o man_n common_o be_v at_o their_o own_o be_v that_o sin_n of_o the_o corinthian_n which_o the_o apostle_n here_o tax_v and_o which_o he_o call_v eat_v &_o drink_v unworthy_o now_o if_o man_n will_v consider_v this_o it_o will_v be_v one_o good_a step_n towards_o their_o satisfaction_n in_o this_o case_n and_o of_o good_a use_n towards_o the_o remove_n their_o fear_n of_o eat_v unworthy_o for_o why_o shall_v man_n fear_v incur_v the_o same_o guilt_n unless_o they_o commit_v the_o same_o sin_n and_o while_o they_o be_v very_o sure_o they_o shall_v not_o commit_v the_o one_o why_o shall_v they_o discourage_v and_o afflict_v themselves_o with_o fear_n of_o the_o other_o it_o be_v neither_o safe_a nor_o fair_a deal_n to_o apply_v passage_n of_o scripture_n beyond_o their_o own_o proper_a intendment_n and_o few_o thing_n have_v do_v more_o harm_n in_o divinity_n than_o this_o as_o we_o can_v establish_v or_o prove_v the_o truth_n of_o doctrine_n from_o the_o bare_a chime_a of_o word_n or_o because_o some_o say_n may_v be_v find_v in_o scripture_n that_o seem_v to_o find_v to_o our_o sense_n and_o purpose_n no_o more_o ought_v we_o hasty_o to_o extend_v reproof_n and_o threaten_n beyond_o their_o own_o proper_a matter_n as_o for_o example_n to_o make_v this_o clear_a in_o a_o parallel_n case_n every_o failure_n of_o a_o clergyman_n in_o the_o discharge_n of_o his_o public_a duty_n be_v not_o present_o to_o be_v think_v to_o be_v nadab_n and_o abihu_n offering_n of_o strange_a fire_n nor_o be_v present_o to_o expect_v the_o like_a miraculous_a punishment_n will_v have_v observe_v here_o be_v this_o that_o nothing_o can_v be_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o analogy_n to_o what_o the_o apostle_n mean_v here_o but_o that_o which_o argue_v or_o infer_v as_o great_a a_o irreverence_n to_o this_o service_n and_o as_o gross_a a_o profanation_n of_o it_o as_o this_o of_o the_o corinthian_n make_v they_o guilty_a of_o their_o eat_n and_o drink_v unworthy_o consist_v in_o this_o and_o therefore_o if_o man_n make_v any_o thing_n else_o to_o be_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o like_o they_o they_o must_v prove_v the_o same_o or_o as_o great_a irreverence_n and_o profanation_n to_o be_v in_o it_o if_o they_o can_v find_v any_o other_o thing_n which_o equal_o hinder_v man_n from_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n or_o yield_v any_o more_o respect_n to_o the_o sacred_a symbol_n of_o it_o than_o the_o corinthian_n do_v than_o i_o will_v yield_v that_o that_o may_v be_v allow_v to_o come_v within_o the_o guilt_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v bread_n and_o wine_n he_o will_v not_o consider_v that_o they_o be_v the_o symbol_n of_o christ_n body_n and_o blood_n and_o that_o the_o break_n of_o the_o one_o be_v to_o signify_v the_o break_n of_o christ_n body_n on_o the_o cross_n and_o the_o pour_v out_o of_o the_o other_o the_o shed_n of_o his_o blood_n for_o our_o redemption_n and_o that_o our_o communicate_v in_o these_o be_v communicate_v in_o the_o bless_a effect_n and_o benefit_n of_o both_o he_o do_v not_o know_v that_o by_o this_o solemn_a rite_n of_o religion_n he_o be_v to_o commemorate_v with_o gratitude_n and_o transport_v the_o amaze_a love_n of_o his_o die_a lord_n and_o that_o in_o this_o he_o may_v expect_v those_o communication_n of_o divine_a grace_n that_o shall_v strengthen_v and_o refresh_v his_o soul_n as_o real_o and_o true_o as_o his_o body_n be_v by_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n and_o be_v thus_o profound_o ignorant_a in_o these_o thing_n such_o a_o man_n will_v eat_v that_o morsel_n of_o bread_n and_o drink_v that_o wine_n but_o just_a as_o these_o corinthian_n and_o their_o fellow_n grecian_n use_v to_o do_v the_o like_a in_o the_o end_n of_o their_o feast_n as_o a_o conclude_v morsel_n and_o as_o a_o grace_n cup_n in_o token_n of_o that_o love_n which_o be_v among_o the_o ghost_n for_o so_o they_o use_v always_o to_o end_v these_o their_o convention_n and_o just_o like_o they_o he_o will_v be_v far_o enough_o from_o apprehend_v any_o thing_n of_o religion_n and_o mystery_n to_o be_v in_o it_o and_o consequent_o to_o that_o far_o enough_o from_o that_o devotion_n and_o reverence_n that_o become_v every_o communicant_a in_o this_o service_n this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o convert_v in_o the_o ancient_a time_n of_o the_o church_n be_v usual_o keep_v in_o the_o rank_n ignorant_a under_o such_o advantage_n and_o mean_n of_o knowledge_n as_o they_o enjoy_v and_o if_o they_o apply_v their_o mind_n to_o they_o as_o the_o church_n beg_v they_o to_o do_v they_o can_v do_v so_o i_o will_v not_o be_v afraid_a to_o have_v the_o comparison_n make_v between_o the_o member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n and_o the_o proselyte_n to_o any_o of_o the_o various_a sect_n among_o we_o if_o the_o trial_n be_v make_v it_o will_v be_v find_v who_o be_v the_o ignorant_a who_o true_o understand_v what_o christian_a religion_n mean_n notwithstanding_o they_o may_v well_o be_v count_v so_o gross_o ignorant_a as_o to_o bring_v they_o under_o the_o danger_n of_o eat_v unworthy_o upon_o that_o reason_n and_o that_o if_o any_o shall_v chance_v to_o be_v so_o it_o be_v their_o own_o fault_n only_o and_o the_o church_n be_v whole_o free_a and_o to_o be_v acquit_v from_o be_v in_o the_o least_o accessary_a to_o it_o but_o i_o pass_v the_o further_a prosecution_n of_o this_o and_o proceed_v to_o what_o be_v more_o pertinent_a to_o my_o purpose_n and_o that_o be_v to_o show_v by_o what_o measure_v a_o man_n may_v judge_v himself_o and_o his_o knowledge_n in_o purchase_v pardon_n for_o man_n upon_o the_o condition_n of_o repentance_n and_o faith_n in_o he_o that_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v institute_v to_o be_v a_o commemoration_n of_o this_o death_n of_o christ_n to_o give_v god_n almighty_a hearty_a and_o devout_a praise_n for_o it_o and_o to_o assure_v we_o that_o if_o we_o true_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o his_o merit_n repent_v we_o of_o our_o sin_n and_o resolve_v by_o god_n grace_n to_o lead_v a_o good_a life_n we_o shall_v be_v pardon_v for_o what_o be_v past_a and_o enable_v to_o perform_v what_o we_o resolve_v for_o the_o future_a true_o upon_o these_o be_v no_o mighty_a arduous_a or_o difficult_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n a_o man_n that_o be_v a_o grow_v christian_a and_o have_v live_v under_o the_o instruction_n of_o the_o church_n can_v hardly_o be_v think_v so_o ignorant_a as_o to_o come_v within_o the_o danger_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o upon_o this_o reason_n he_o will_v be_v able_a to_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n to_o understand_v that_o this_o be_v a_o sacred_a and_o religious_a service_n and_o to_o put_v a_o difference_n between_o it_o and_o a_o common_a meal_n he_o will_v understand_v what_o it_o mean_v what_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v what_o to_o expect_v and_o what_o posture_n to_o put_v himself_o into_o when_o he_o do_v approach_n to_o the_o table_n of_o his_o lord_n 2._o but_o the_o more_o important_a and_o seem_a difficulty_n be_v yet_o behind_o and_o that_o be_v to_o apply_v what_o i_o say_v to_o the_o second_o thing_n
till_o they_o have_v a_o little_a better_o strengthen_v their_o good_a resolution_n and_o temper_n than_o to_o venture_v present_o upon_o that_o service_n which_o they_o may_v abuse_v and_o profane_v by_o be_v false_a to_o the_o resolution_n they_o take_v up_o and_o the_o promise_n which_o they_o make_v in_o it_o this_o be_v the_o case_n and_o to_o the_o scruple_n take_v up_o upon_o it_o i_o upon_o all_o occasion_n to_o promise_v great_a thing_n to_o god_n what_o reform_v what_o good_a man_n we_o will_v become_v and_o be_v but_o yet_o to_o be_v regardless_o and_o careless_a afterward_o whether_o we_o be_v such_o or_o not_o and_o never_o to_o apply_v ourselves_o in_o earnest_a to_o make_v good_a what_o we_o have_v promise_v and_o to_o put_v our_o good_a purpose_n in_o execution_n 2._o but_o yet_o second_o a_o man_n do_v thus_o afterward_o do_v not_o make_v his_o communicate_v in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n to_o be_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o any_o proportion_n to_o what_o be_v intend_v in_o this_o text._n his_o have_v receive_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n may_v aggravate_v the_o guilt_n of_o he_o after_o failure_n but_o that_o subsequent_a failure_n do_v not_o so_o affect_v his_o precedent_n communicate_v as_o to_o render_v it_o eat_v and_o drink_v thus_o unworthy_o if_o the_o purpose_n of_o the_o mind_n be_v then_o serious_a and_o sincere_a his_o receive_v yet_o afterward_o that_o sense_n of_o thing_n may_v wear_v of_o and_o that_o purpose_n of_o mind_n abate_v and_o that_o specious_a promise_n may_v come_v final_o to_o nothing_o but_o this_o be_v not_o because_o the_o man_n be_v not_o then_o real_o in_o earnest_n but_o because_o afterward_o he_o be_v careless_a and_o trifle_a and_o easy_o lead_v away_o with_o temptation_n that_o interfere_v with_o his_o former_a promise_n and_o purpose_n of_o mind_n and_o so_o i_o doubt_v not_o it_o may_v be_v and_o too_o often_o be_v with_o man_n when_o they_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n their_o pious_a purpose_n for_o that_o time_n may_v be_v sincere_a and_o in_o earnest_n and_o yet_o afterward_o wear_v off_o and_o come_v to_o nothing_o 3._o and_o therefore_o three_o i_o affirm_v a_o man_n in_o this_o case_n do_v come_v with_o one_o great_a qualification_n which_o shall_v attend_v his_o communicate_v in_o the_o sacrament_n i._n e._n a_o purpose_n of_o repentance_n and_o reformation_n first_o put_v a_o difference_n between_o the_o consecrate_a element_n and_o common_a bread_n and_o wine_n the_o look_v upon_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n as_o a_o immediate_a duty_n and_o service_n of_o religion_n and_o consequent_o perform_v it_o with_o that_o devotion_n and_o seriousness_n that_o reverence_n and_o respect_n that_o man_n use_v to_o show_v in_o other_o service_n of_o religion_n the_o want_n of_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o make_v the_o corinthian_n to_o eat_v unworthy_o and_o provoke_v god_n to_o punish_v they_o with_o sundry_a disease_n and_o death_n as_o he_o afterward_o they_o do_v not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n then_o if_o they_o do_v discern_v it_o they_o will_v not_o eat_v unworthy_o for_o the_o old_a rule_n be_v true_a in_o morality_n as_o well_o as_o nature_n and_o will_v hold_v in_o this_o instance_n as_o well_o as_o other_o take_v away_o the_o cause_n and_o the_o effect_n will_v cease_v 2._o but_o second_o this_o appear_v clear_a in_o the_o rid_v man_n mind_n of_o those_o unreasonable_a and_o superstitious_a fear_n that_o they_o have_v too_o general_o take_v up_o in_o prejudice_n against_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o address_v themselves_o conscionable_o and_o cheerful_o unto_o it_o and_o i_o have_v nothing_o more_o but_o to_o beg_v they_o to_o give_v it_o this_o effect_n to_o take_v heed_n that_o they_o shut_v not_o it_o to_o comprehend_v some_o other_o failure_n beside_o this_o yet_o we_o do_v it_o but_o by_o analogy_n and_o proportion_n in_o which_o we_o may_v possible_o be_v mistake_v and_o in_o which_o our_o
