saviour_n jesus_n christ_n and_o yet_o afterward_o be_v entangle_v and_o overcome_v 2_o pet._n 2._o 20._o sim._n but_o sir_n i_o shall_v think_v it_o be_v impossible_a for_o a_o man_n that_o be_v able_a to_o answer_v you_o any_o question_n touch_v any_o fundamental_a point_n of_o religion_n and_o that_o lead_v a_o honest_a and_o religious_a course_n of_o life_n to_o want_v true_a faith_n in_o christ_n for_o i_o think_v it_o shall_v be_v as_o evident_a that_o such_o a_o man_n have_v true_a faith_n as_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o a_o sinful_a and_o ungodly_a man_n have_v it_o not_o min._n no_o it_o be_v not_o so_o evident_a for_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o whatsoever_o do_v not_o glister_n be_v not_o gold_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o so_o true_a that_o whatsoever_o do_v glister_n be_v gold_n even_o so_o may_v we_o say_v that_o although_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o every_o person_n that_o be_v gross_o ignorant_a and_o be_v a_o gross_a sinner_n have_v not_o true_a faith_n in_o christ_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o so_o evident_a that_o every_o man_n that_o have_v knowledge_n and_o lead_v a_o honest_a and_o righteous_a course_n of_o life_n according_a to_o the_o law_n have_v true_a righteousness_n which_o be_v of_o the_o law_n but_o 9_o phil._n 3._o 9_o that_o which_o be_v through_o the_o faith_n of_o christ_n the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v of_o god_n through_o faith_n then_o do_v we_o willing_o open_v the_o door_n and_o let_v he_o in_o otherwise_o we_o send_v not_o for_o he_o again_o and_o even_o so_o be_v we_o like_v to_o deal_v by_o you_o sim._n well_o sir_n you_o have_v answer_v i_o full_o and_o i_o hope_v i_o shall_v think_v of_o it_o but_o sir_n suppose_v that_o a_o antinomisticall_a professor_n shall_v come_v before_o you_o how_o will_v you_o deal_v with_o he_o min._n why_o though_o a_o man_n be_v accuse_v to_o be_v a_o antimonian_a yet_o if_o upon_o examination_n we_o find_v that_o he_o have_v a_o competent_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n and_o we_o neither_o know_v nor_o can_v hear_v but_o that_o he_o lead_v a_o honest_a and_o religious_a course_n of_o life_n though_o he_o seem_v to_o hold_v that_o the_o law_n be_v not_o to_o be_v a_o rule_n of_o life_n to_o a_o believer_n and_o that_o god_n can_v see_v no_o sin_n in_o a_o justify_v person_n and_o that_o god_n be_v neither_o angry_a nor_o do_v afflict_v his_o people_n for_o sin_n and_o that_o christ_n inherent_a righteousness_n be_v both_o the_o righteousness_n of_o a_o believer_n justification_n and_o sanctification_n yet_o if_o we_o perceive_v that_o he_o do_v not_o peremptory_o and_o obstinate_o hold_v and_o maintain_v these_o point_n but_o be_v rather_o induce_v to_o hold_v they_o because_o such_o a_o minister_n or_o such_o a_o religious_a man_n who_o he_o do_v reverence_n and_o have_v a_o good_a opinion_n of_o be_v that_o judgement_n and_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v instruct_v in_o the_o truth_n then_o do_v we_o hope_v that_o notwithstanding_o all_o this_o he_o have_v true_a faith_n in_o christ_n and_o therefore_o do_v open_a the_o gate_n to_o he_o and_o let_v he_o in_o but_o if_o upon_o information_n and_o examination_n we_o find_v a_o man_n to_o hold_v and_o maintain_v these_o point_n obstinate_o and_o do_v either_o certain_o know_v or_o hear_v that_o his_o conversion_n be_v not_o such_o as_o become_v the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n than_o we_o do_v very_o much_o suspect_v he_o though_o he_o have_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n and_o therefore_o do_v not_o present_o open_v the_o gate_n unto_o he_o but_o pray_v he_o to_o hearken_v to_o the_o truth_n and_o consider_v of_o it_o when_o he_o come_v home_o and_o then_o if_o afterward_o he_o come_v to_o we_o again_o and_o acknowledge_v his_o error_n and_o profess_v his_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n for_o the_o same_o then_o do_v we_o willing_o open_v the_o door_n unto_o he_o otherwise_o we_o send_v not_o for_o he_o sim._n well_o sir_n if_o you_o be_v so_o careful_a and_o so_o you_o do_v admit_v such_o to_o the_o sacrament_n as_o be_v not_o fit_a to_o be_v admit_v and_o to_o tell_v you_o the_o truth_n i_o myself_o also_o have_v some_o thought_n of_o go_v that_o way_n only_o i_o resolve_v to_o stay_v and_o see_v what_o your_o way_n will_v be_v and_o what_o you_o will_v do_v min._n sure_o neighbour_n simon_n though_o i_o be_o very_o persuade_v there_o be_v many_o man_n and_o woman_n go_v that_o way_n who_o do_v true_o fear_v the_o lord_n yet_o be_o i_o jealous_a that_o there_o be_v divers_a take_v in_o among_o they_o that_o be_v as_o unfit_a and_o as_o unmeet_a to_o be_v admit_v to_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n as_o any_o that_o we_o have_v hitherto_o admit_v and_o therefore_o i_o see_v no_o reason_n that_o any_o christian_n have_v to_o leave_v we_o and_o go_v to_o they_o for_o any_o such_o cause_n sim._n i_o pray_v you_o sir_n tell_v i_o what_o you_o think_v of_o the_o independent_a way_n for_o i_o will_v fain_o hear_v your_o judgement_n concern_v it_o min._n true_o neighbour_n simon_n i_o have_v neither_o mind_n nor_o time_n to_o fall_v upon_o any_o such_o discourse_n neither_o will_v i_o advise_v you_o to_o trouble_v yourself_o too_o many_o people_n that_o do_v spend_v too_o much_o time_n about_o such_o needless_a matter_n and_o too_o many_o wrangle_a dispute_n have_v be_v thereby_o occasion_v i_o wish_v with_o all_o my_o heart_n there_o may_v be_v no_o more_o and_o i_o wish_v with_o all_o my_o heart_n that_o all_o who_o be_v true_o godly_a either_o among_o they_o or_o we_o have_v such_o humble_a love_a heart_n as_o christian_n ought_v to_o have_v that_o we_o may_v neither_o speak_v nor_o think_v evil_a one_o of_o another_o but_o rather_o study_v and_o endeavour_v to_o make_v up_o the_o breach_n which_o be_v needless_o make_v betwixt_o we_o that_o so_o if_o it_o be_v the_o lord_n will_v we_o may_v all_o speak_v the_o same_o thing_n and_o that_o there_o may_v be_v no_o division_n among_o we_o but_o that_o we_o may_v be_v perfect_o join_v together_o in_o the_o same_o mind_n and_o in_o the_o same_o judgement_n according_a to_o the_o apostle_n exhortation_n 1_o cor._n 1._o 10._o and_o that_o we_o may_v with_o one_o mind_n and_o with_o one_o mouth_n glorify_v god_n even_o the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n as_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v rom._n 15._o 6._o and_o so_o have_v more_o near_o and_o sweet_a communion_n together_o in_o all_o the_o lord_n holy_a ordinance_n for_o the_o edify_a and_o build_v up_o one_o another_o in_o our_o most_o holy_a faith_n and_o thus_o you_o see_v what_o my_o mind_n and_o desire_n be_v touch_v these_o thing_n sim._n then_o sir_n it_o seem_v to_o i_o that_o you_o do_v not_o only_o desire_v that_o all_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a and_o have_v a_o mind_n to_o go_v the_o independent_a way_n shall_v come_v to_o you_o and_o join_v with_o you_o in_o your_o way_n but_o also_o that_o all_o those_o who_o be_v already_o join_v in_o the_o independent_a way_n shall_v return_v to_o you_o min._n that_o be_v my_o desire_n indeed_o and_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o that_o it_o will_v be_v very_o well_o please_v and_o acceptable_a to_o the_o lord_n if_o all_o that_o be_v true_o godly_a among_o they_o whether_o they_o be_v minister_n or_o people_n will_v come_v in_o among_o we_o for_o true_o i_o can_v see_v no_o warrant_n they_o have_v from_o the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o separate_v from_o we_o and_o to_o gather_v church_n out_o of_o church_n as_o they_o do_v sure_o i_o think_v if_o they_o will_v but_o read_v that_o learned_a and_o moderate_a tract_n call_v jus_fw-la divinum_fw-la with_o a_o indifferent_a judgement_n and_o moderate_a spirit_n without_o prejudice_n they_o shall_v see_v that_o our_o way_n touch_v church-government_n come_v as_o near_o the_o mind_n and_o will_n of_o christ_n as_o can_v be_v find_v out_o in_o his_o word_n but_o what_o say_v a_o godly_a judicious_a and_o moderate_a minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o the_o pulpit_n not_o long_o since_o in_o my_o hear_n i_o be_o persuade_v say_v he_o and_o it_o be_v not_o only_o my_o judgement_n but_o also_o the_o judgement_n of_o a_o grave_n gody_n and_o learned_a divine_a who_o have_v long_o study_v the_o point_n that_o there_o be_v not_o to_o be_v find_v in_o all_o the_o whole_a new_a testament_n a_o perfect_a platform_n of_o church-government_n which_o make_v i_o think_v say_v he_o that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o mind_n of_o christ_n that_o christian_n under_o the_o new_a testament_n shall_v much_o busy_a or_o trouble_v themselves_o about_o such_o matter_n these_o word_n as_o near_o as_o i_o can_v remember_v he_o utter_v and_o true_o i_o think_v it_o be_v well_o if_o we_o be_v all_o of_o his_o mind_n that_o so_o
true_o have_v you_o ever_o go_v to_o the_o lord_n in_o prayer_n about_o your_o sin_n mat._n yea_o indeed_o sir_n i_o have_v of_o late_a divers_a time_n go_v private_o to_o prayer_n and_o have_v beseech_v the_o lord_n that_o he_o will_v be_v please_v for_o jesus_n christ_n sake_n to_o pardon_v my_o former_a sin_n and_o give_v i_o power_n to_o overcome_v my_o present_a corruption_n but_o yet_o alas_o all_o in_o vain_a for_o they_o do_v still_o remain_v with_o i_o min._n but_o do_v you_o believe_v that_o your_o former_a sin_n be_v pardon_v mat._n no_o sure_o sir_n i_o can_v believe_v that_o so_o so_o long_o as_o my_o present_a corruption_n do_v still_o remain_v unsubdued_a min._n weep_v not_o i_o pray_v you_o but_o consider_v that_o you_o have_v go_v a_o wrong_a way_n to_o work_v you_o will_v have_v your_o sin_n subdue_v before_o they_o be_v pardon_v whereas_o the_o lord_n do_v first_o pardon_n sin_n and_o then_o he_o give_v power_n against_o sin_n mat._n but_o sir_n i_o have_v think_v with_o myself_o that_o as_o when_o i_o be_v a_o child_n and_o have_v by_o the_o commit_n of_o any_o fault_n displease_v my_o father_n he_o will_v at_o my_o entreat_v forgive_v i_o upon_o condition_n that_o i_o do_v so_o no_o more_o but_o if_o i_o commit_v the_o like_a fault_n again_o than_o he_o will_v not_o forgive_v the_o former_a but_o reckon_v with_o i_o for_o they_o both_o even_o so_o i_o do_v conceive_v the_o lord_n will_v deal_v with_o i_o min._n but_o do_v not_o you_o tell_v i_o that_o you_o do_v beseech_v the_o lord_n to_o forgive_v you_o your_o sin_n for_o christ_n jesus_n sake_n mat._n yea_o indeed_o min._n and_o why_o have_v you_o ask_v it_o for_o christ_n sake_n mat._n because_o he_o have_v suffer_v death_n for_o my_o sin_n min._n and_o do_v you_o noâ—_n believe_v that_o christ_n by_o his_o death_n have_v full_o satisfy_v the_o justice_n of_o god_n for_o all_o your_o sin_n mat._n yea_o sir_n i_o do_v believe_v he_o have_v min._n why_o then_o do_v you_o not_o believe_v that_o god_n for_o his_o satisfaction_n sake_n have_v forgive_v your_o sin_n mat._n why_o sir_n i_o do_v believe_v it_o so_o long_o as_o i_o do_v continue_v obedient_a unto_o god_n in_o do_v his_o will_n and_o not_o transgress_v his_o commandment_n min._n and_o can_v you_o not_o believe_v it_o any_o long_a than_o you_o do_v so_o mat._n no_o indeed_o sir_n min._n why_o then_o you_o do_v not_o believe_v that_o god_n pardon_v your_o sin_n for_o christ_n sake_n but_o for_o your_o own_o sake_n not_o for_o christ_n obedience_n sake_n but_o for_o your_o own_o obedience_n sake_n mat._n indeed_o sir_n i_o can_v tell_v what_o to_o say_v to_o that_o min._n well_o neighbour_n mathias_n as_o you_o have_v beseech_v the_o lord_n to_o pardon_v and_o forgive_v you_o your_o sin_n for_o christ_n jesus_n sake_n do_v so_o still_o but_o withal_o believe_v that_o he_o have_v do_v so_o according_a to_o your_o petition_n yea_o and_o that_o absolute_o and_o not_o conditional_o as_o you_o have_v do_v and_o answerable_o as_o you_o do_v so_o you_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o find_v and_o feel_v your_o sin_n mortify_v and_o subdue_v do_v but_o believe_v that_o you_o be_v wash_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n from_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n and_o you_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o find_v that_o you_o be_v cleanse_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n from_o the_o filth_n of_o sin_n let_v a_o man_n say_v doctor_n preston_n but_o believe_v the_o cou._n on_o the_o new_a cou._n the_o promise_n of_o pardon_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o very_a believe_a the_o pardon_n will_v be_v able_a to_o cleanse_v his_o heart_n from_o dead_a work_n for_o that_o faith_n which_o do_v lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n crucify_v say_v another_o godly_a divine_a do_v 292._o dyke_n on_o the_o sacrament_n p._n 292._o fetch_v a_o crucify_a virtue_n from_o he_o whereby_o the_o body_n of_o corruption_n be_v enfeeble_v and_o weaken_a mat._n o_o but_o sir_n i_o fear_v i_o shall_v not_o believe_v that_o my_o sin_n be_v pardon_v so_o long_o as_o they_o remain_v unsubdued_a min._n if_o you_o will_v not_o believe_v that_o your_o sin_n be_v pardon_v till_o they_o be_v quite_o subdue_v then_o will_v you_o not_o believe_v it_o whilst_o you_o live_v for_o so_o long_o as_o you_o live_v here_o you_o shall_v find_v and_o feel_v some_o remainder_n of_o sinful_a corruption_n unsubdued_a though_o you_o do_v believe_v and_o if_o you_o do_v not_o believe_v you_o shall_v not_o have_v they_o subdue_v at_o all_o by_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n of_o christ_n indeed_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o after_o much_o strive_n against_o your_o corruption_n in_o your_o own_o strength_n you_o may_v see_v there_o be_v no_o strength_n in_o you_o to_o subdue_v they_o as_o you_o will_v and_o may_v thereupon_o go_v unto_o christ_n by_o prayer_n for_o grace_n and_o power_n to_o leave_v sin_n and_o do_v better_o and_o so_o live_v upon_o christ_n that_o you_o may_v live_v upon_o yourself_o i_o say_v you_o may_v go_v unto_o christ_n for_o power_n to_o do_v your_o work_n that_o so_o you_o may_v earn_v your_o wage_n and_o it_o be_v possible_a you_o may_v hereupon_o grow_v in_o legal_a righteousness_n as_o the_o stony_a and_o thorny_a ground_n seed_n spring_v up_o and_o increase_v much_o and_o come_v near_o unto_o maturity_n and_o yet_o this_o not_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n wherefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o go_v not_o this_o way_n to_o work_v do_v not_o seek_v to_o have_v the_o righteousness_n of_o sanctification_n infuse_v into_o you_o before_o you_o seek_v to_o have_v the_o righteousness_n of_o justification_n impute_v unto_o you_o and_o so_o as_o much_o as_o in_o you_o lie_v to_o go_v about_o to_o pervert_v the_o lord_n own_o order_n and_o method_n do_v you_o not_o remember_v how_o i_o tell_v my_o neighbour_n simon_n that_o the_o lord_n order_n and_o method_n in_o justify_v and_o sanctify_v a_o sinner_n be_v first_o to_o justify_v he_o by_o impute_v the_o righteousness_n that_o be_v inherent_a in_o christ_n unto_o he_o and_o enable_v he_o to_o apprehend_v it_o by_o faith_n and_o then_o to_o sanctify_v he_o by_o infuse_v of_o righteousness_n into_o he_o by_o his_o spirit_n and_o this_o be_v the_o method_n which_o the_o prophet_n micah_n proclaim_v by_o way_n of_o admiration_n say_v who_o be_v a_o god_n like_o unto_o thou_o that_o pardon_v iniquity_n and_o pass_v by_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o remnant_n of_o his_o heritage_n he_o retain_v not_o his_o anger_n for_o ever_o because_o he_o delight_v in_o mercy_n here_o be_v the_o righteousness_n 18._o micah_n 7._o 18._o of_o justification_n and_o then_o in_o the_o next_o verse_n he_o proclaim_v the_o righteousness_n of_o sanctification_n say_v he_o will_v turn_v again_o he_o will_v have_v compassion_n upon_o we_o he_o will_v subdue_v our_o iniquity_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o method_n the_o prophet_n david_n be_v well_o acquaint_v with_o and_o therefore_o in_o the_o first_o verse_n of_o the_o 51._o psalm_n he_o beseech_v the_o lord_n according_a to_o the_o multitude_n of_o his_o mercy_n to_o blot_v out_o his_o transgression_n and_o then_o in_o the_o ten_o ver_fw-la he_o say_v create_v in_o i_o a_o clean_a heart_n o_o god_n and_o renew_v a_o right_a spirit_n within_o i_o wherefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o corruption_n which_o be_v still_o in_o i_o that_o i_o very_o think_v i_o shall_v never_o be_v quiet_a in_o my_o mind_n whilst_o they_o and_o i_o live_v together_o min._n weep_v not_o i_o pray_v you_o except_o it_o be_v for_o joy_n for_o sure_o this_o fear_n be_v a_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n for_o ordinary_o after_o conviction_n he_o let_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o elect_n such_o fear_n as_o these_o for_o although_o it_o be_v true_a there_o may_v be_v in_o a_o mere_a natural_a man_n certain_a natural_a fear_n arise_v from_o the_o accusation_n of_o his_o natural_a conscience_n yet_o they_o never_o affect_v his_o heart_n so_o as_o to_o work_v a_o separation_n betwixt_o his_o heart_n and_o his_o sin_n but_o your_o fear_n do_v so_o affect_v
be_v soundness_n of_o mind_n in_o thou_o if_o thy_o knowledge_n be_v sound_a though_o weak_a let_v it_o not_o discourage_v thou_o and_o there_o may_v be_v soundness_n of_o mind_n as_o well_o in_o a_o little_a knowledge_n as_o in_o much_o mat._n i_o sir_n it_o be_v like_a that_o there_o may_v be_v so_o in_o other_o but_o how_o shall_v i_o be_v sure_a there_o be_v so_o in_o i_o min._n it_o be_v very_o clear_a and_o evident_a to_o i_o that_o your_o knowledge_n be_v sound_a though_o weak_a and_o that_o you_o have_v a_o sound_a mind_n in_o that_o you_o know_v yourself_o your_o nature_n and_o your_o sin_n and_o be_v thereupon_o humble_v for_o unsound_a knowledge_n puff_v up_o 1_o cor._n 8._o 1._o but_o your_o knowledge_n have_v discover_v to_o you_o your_o ignorance_n and_o so_o have_v abase_v you_o in_o your_o own_o eye_n and_o cast_v you_o down_o and_o therefore_o doubtless_o your_o mind_n be_v sound_a mat._n i_o but_o sir_n i_o tell_v you_o that_o i_o also_o fear_v that_o i_o renounce_v your_o own_o righteousness_n mat._n yea_o indeed_o sir_n that_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o it_o min._n why_o i_o pray_v you_o tell_v i_o true_o have_v you_o any_o hope_n to_o be_v justify_v or_o accept_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n for_o your_o own_o performance_n mat._n yea_o indeed_o sir_n i_o tell_v you_o that_o i_o have_v have_v hope_n that_o if_o i_o sin_v no_o more_o than_o the_o lord_n will_v forgive_v my_o former_a sin_n and_o accept_v of_o i_o min._n but_o i_o do_v not_o ask_v you_o what_o you_o have_v do_v former_o but_o what_o you_o do_v now_o mat._n why_o true_o sir_n you_o have_v this_o day_n make_v it_o so_o evident_a and_o clear_a to_o i_o that_o it_o be_v only_o the_o righteousness_n of_o jesus_n christ_n receive_v by_o faith_n that_o procure_v acceptance_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n that_o i_o see_v it_o be_v my_o only_a way_n to_o believe_v on_o his_o name_n and_o as_o i_o tell_v you_o i_o do_v desire_n so_o to_o do_v mat._n then_o believe_v it_o you_o be_v true_o humble_v which_o be_v a_o very_a good_a and_o sure_a foundation_n and_o therefore_o you_o be_v like_a to_o erect_v a_o good_a and_o sure_a building_n though_o it_o may_v be_v it_o may_v not_o go_v on_o so_o fast_o nor_o make_v so_o glorious_a a_o show_n as_o some_o other_o do_v mat._n but_o alas_o sir_n i_o be_o so_o ashamed_a and_o trouble_v in_o my_o mind_n when_o i_o consider_v how_o far_o other_o man_n do_v outstrip_v i_o both_o in_o knowledge_n and_o other_o grace_n that_o i_o know_v not_o what_o to_o do_v min._n but_o sure_o you_o have_v no_o cause_n at_o all_o to_o be_v trouble_v at_o that_o for_o it_o be_v to_o be_v fear_v there_o be_v some_o professor_n that_o grow_v up_o quick_o and_o flourish_v abundant_o in_o a_o legal_a way_n they_o be_v not_o trouble_v with_o inward_a heart_n corruption_n as_o other_o poor_a soul_n be_v they_o be_v full_a of_o part_n gift_n ability_n and_o duty_n which_o other_o want_v and_o be_v very_o glorious_a christian_n in_o outward_a appearance_n and_o yet_o for_o lack_v of_o a_o humble_a foundation_n they_o be_v but_o flitter_a fleet_a motion_n &_o windy_a conception_n whereas_o you_o or_o rather_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n in_o you_o have_v lay_v such_o a_o humble_a foundation_n that_o questionless_a there_o shall_v be_v build_v upon_o it_o a_o gracious_a building_n compose_v of_o many_o evangelicall_n grace_n and_o therefore_o i_o pray_v you_o be_v not_o dismay_v though_o you_o come_v far_o short_a of_o many_o vain_a glorious_a hie-spirited_a professor_n it_o be_v like_o the_o lord_n see_v though_o it_o may_v be_v you_o do_v not_o that_o if_o you_o have_v such_o part_n gift_n and_o ability_n which_o some_o other_o have_v and_o have_v not_o some_o sinful_a corruption_n in_o you_o which_o it_o may_v be_v other_o have_v not_o that_o then_o you_o will_v he_o lift_v up_o above_o that_o which_o be_v meet_v and_o be_v keep_v in_o yourself_o from_o christ_n therefore_o it_o be_v the_o lord_n glorious_a wisdom_n and_o gracious_a goodness_n to_o you_o to_o let_v some_o of_o your_o sinful_a corruption_n remain_v in_o you_o especial_o to_o open_v your_o eye_n to_o see_v they_o and_o to_o affect_v your_o heart_n with_o they_o and_o to_o let_v you_o come_v behind_o other_o in_o gift_n and_o part_n that_o so_o your_o soul_n may_v sink_v in_o holy_a despair_n of_o any_o help_n in_o yourself_o and_o rest_n in_o nothing_o till_o it_o come_v to_o christ_n crucify_a and_o the_o eternal_a sweet_a promise_n in_o he_o howbeit_o this_o you_o may_v be_v assure_v of_o that_o if_o you_o be_v careful_a to_o use_v the_o good_a mean_n to_o this_o end_n appoint_v you_o shall_v have_v such_o a_o measure_n of_o faith_n and_o all_o other_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n as_o shall_v be_v most_o fit_a for_o you_o mat._n o_o bless_a be_v the_o lord_n if_o this_o be_v true_a but_o i_o pray_v you_o sir_n what_o be_v the_o mean_n which_o you_o will_v have_v i_o to_o use_v min._n why_o i_o mean_v hear_n and_o read_v the_o word_n of_o god_n meditation_n prayer_n and_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n mat._n why_o sir_n i_o pray_v you_o do_v you_o think_v i_o sit_v to_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n min._n yea_o indeed_o do_v i_o mat._n sure_o sir_n i_o be_o altogether_o unworthy_a min._n and_o why_o do_v you_o think_v yourself_o unworthy_a mat._n why_o because_o of_o my_o ignorance_n and_o sinfulness_n min._n then_o belike_o you_o think_v that_o knowledge_n and_o righteousness_n make_v a_o man_n worthy_a to_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n mat._n yes_o indeed_o sir_n i_o have_v have_v such_o thought_n and_o therefore_o when_o i_o hear_v you_o question_v whether_o my_o neighbour_n simon_n be_v worthy_a to_o be_v admit_v to_o the_o sacrament_n i_o do_v much_o admire_v at_o it_o for_o that_o i_o know_v he_o be_v a_o man_n of_o great_a knowledge_n and_o godly_a life_n but_o i_o do_v much_o more_o admire_v that_o you_o shall_v think_v i_o to_o be_v worthy_a min._n indeed_o if_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v these_o word_n worthy_a and_o unworthy_a by_o way_n of_o merit_v and_o deserve_v than_o he_o in_o regard_n he_o have_v more_o knowledge_n than_o you_o and_o it_o may_v be_v be_v more_o free_a from_o some_o inward_a corruption_n than_o you_o and_o do_v more_o frequent_o perform_v religious_a action_n than_o you_o be_v more_o worthy_a than_o you_o but_o as_o i_o tell_v he_o not_o long_o since_o we_o be_v not_o to_o understand_v word_n worthy_a and_o unworthy_a by_o way_n of_o merit_v and_o deserve_v but_o by_o way_n of_o fitness_n and_o suitableness_n of_o disposition_n to_o receive_v christ_n and_o take_v they_o in_o this_o sense_n i_o say_v that_o your_o ignorance_n and_o sinfulness_n have_v occasional_o through_o the_o work_n of_o god_n spirit_n wrought_v in_o you_o such_o a_o fit_a and_o suitable_a disposition_n for_o the_o receive_n of_o christ_n that_o i_o do_v pronounce_v you_o worthy_a to_o be_v admit_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n mat._n o_o bless_a be_v god_n if_o this_o be_v true_a but_o sir_n i_o pray_v you_o what_o be_v this_o fit_a and_o suitable_a disposition_n which_o you_o say_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v by_o occasion_n of_o my_o ignorance_n and_o sinfulness_n wrought_v in_o i_o or_o wherein_o do_v it_o consist_v min._n this_o fit_a and_o suitable_a disposition_n which_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v wrought_v in_o you_o consist_v in_o that_o sight_n and_o sense_n of_o your_o own_o ignorant_a sinful_a miserable_a and_o helpless_a condition_n as_o have_v make_v you_o see_v your_o need_n of_o jesus_n christ_n to_o be_v make_v unto_o you_o of_o god_n wisdom_n 30_o 1_o cor._n 1._o 30_o righteousness_n sanctification_n and_o redemption_n mat._n but_o sir_n i_o pray_v you_o how_o can_v such_o a_o disposition_n be_v say_v to_o make_v i_o worthy_a to_o be_v admit_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n min._n why_o even_o as_o we_o when_o we_o see_v a_o miserable_a poor_a hungry_a man_n that_o be_v senceable_a of_o his_o own_o miserable_a and_o helpless_a condition_n crave_v a_o alm_n with_o earnest_a desire_n and_o entreat_v we_o do_v conceive_v he_o be_v in_o a_o fit_a and_o suitable_a disposition_n to_o receive_v it_o and_o account_v he_o worthy_a to_o have_v a_o alm_n bestow_v upon_o he_o even_o so_o when_o the_o lord_n see_v a_o man_n so_o sensible_a of_o his_o own_o miserable_a and_o helpless_a condition_n that_o he_o see_v and_o feel_v his_o need_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o therefore_o do_v earnest_o desire_v he_o
he_o conceive_v he_o to_o be_v in_o a_o fit_a and_o suitable_a disposition_n to_o receive_v he_o and_o so_o account_v he_o worthy_a of_o he_o and_o therefore_o we_o read_v in_o the_o ten_o chapter_n of_o st._n matthewes_n gospel_n that_o when_o our_o saviour_n send_v forth_o his_o disciple_n to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o glad_a tiding_n of_o justification_n own_o need_n of_o jesus_n christ_n to_o be_v make_v unto_o he_o of_o god_n wisdom_n 30_o 1_o cor._n 1._o 30_o righteousness_n sanctification_n and_o redemption_n mat._n but_o sir_n how_o can_v such_o a_o disposition_n be_v say_v to_o make_v he_o unworthy_a to_o be_v admit_v to_o the_o lord_n table_n min._n why_o even_o as_o we_o when_o we_o see_v a_o stout_a and_o lusty_a beggar_n come_v to_o crave_v a_o alm_n and_o hear_v he_o flourish_v in_o his_o rhetoric_n and_o not_o speak_v 23_o pro._n 18._o 23_o with_o supplication_n as_o the_o wise_a man_n say_v the_o poor_a man_n do_v than_o we_o do_v conceive_v he_o be_v not_o in_o a_o meet_a and_o suitable_a disposition_n to_o have_v a_o alm_n bestow_v upon_o he_o and_o therefore_o we_o use_v to_o say_v concern_v such_o a_o one_o he_o be_v not_o worthy_a to_o have_v a_o alm_n bestow_v upon_o he_o even_o so_o when_o the_o lord_n see_v a_o man_n proud_a of_o his_o knowledge_n and_o confident_a of_o his_o own_o righteousness_n and_o disposition_n to_o receive_v he_o and_o therefore_o account_v he_o unworthy_a of_o he_o and_o therefore_o we_o read_v in_o the_o 13._o chapter_n of_o the_o act_n of_o the_o apostle_n that_o when_o paul_n and_o barnabas_n be_v in_o the_o city_n of_o antioch_n and_o preach_v the_o glad_a tiding_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o the_o apostle_n call_v they_o verse_n 32._o it_o be_v say_v vers_fw-la 45._o that_o the_o jew_n speak_v against_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v speak_v by_o paul_n contradict_v and_o blaspheme_v whereupon_o paul_n and_o barnabas_n wax_v bold_a say_v the_o text_n verse_n 46._o son_n and_o it_o be_v say_v verse_n 5._o that_o they_o make_v light_a of_o it_o as_o if_o they_o have_v say_v take_v it_o in_o the_o spiritual_a sense_n as_o the_o meaning_n be_v what_o tell_v you_o we_o of_o christ_n or_o of_o justification_n or_o sanctification_n or_o eternal_a salvation_n to_o be_v have_v by_o believe_v on_o christ_n name_n we_o be_v abraham_n child_n we_o be_v the_o people_n of_o god_n we_o be_v a_o righteous_a nation_n and_o therefore_o sure_a of_o eternal_a life_n already_o and_o have_v no_o need_n of_o any_o such_o offer_n whereupon_o the_o king_n say_v verse_n 8._o the_o wedding_n be_v ready_a but_o they_o that_o be_v bid_v be_v not_o worthy_a whereby_o you_o may_v also_o perceive_v that_o this_o unmeet_a and_o unsuitable_a disposition_n in_o not_o see_v a_o the_o sacrament_n aright_o min._n ay_o but_o you_o must_v know_v that_o this_o rule_n hold_v not_o touch_v the_o measure_n of_o knowledge_n only_o except_o it_o be_v also_o true_a and_o sound_a so_o that_o although_o our_o neighbour_n simon_n have_v never_o so_o great_a a_o measure_n of_o knowledge_n yet_o if_o it_o be_v not_o true_a and_o sound_a as_o i_o fear_v it_o be_v not_o then_o have_v he_o no_o true_a faith_n and_o therefore_o be_v he_o not_o fit_a to_o be_v admit_v to_o the_o sacrament_n and_o although_o you_o have_v but_o a_o very_a small_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n yet_o it_o be_v true_a &_o sound_a as_o you_o know_v i_o have_v prove_v then_o have_v you_o a_o true_a faith_n and_o therefore_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v admit_v to_o the_o sacrament_n mat._n
