this_o if_o you_o will_v sanctify_v god_n name_n you_o must_v be_v willing_a to_o renew_v your_o covenant_n that_o be_v the_o end_n of_o it_o there_o must_v be_v a_o actual_a renew_n of_o your_o on_o his_o part_n promise_n and_o make_v a_o cavenant_n that_o he_o will_v bestow_v his_o son_n life_n and_o salvation_n through_o he_o and_o thou_o must_v likewise_o come_v in_o on_o thy_o part_n and_o believe_v on_o his_o son_n and_o repent_v which_o be_v the_o tenor_n of_o the_o gospel_n now_o every_o time_n thou_o come_v to_o receive_v this_o sacrament_n thou_o come_v to_o renew_v this_o beyond_o the_o nature_n of_o these_o creature_n to_o convey_v that_o that_o be_v by_o a_o institution_n of_o god_n set_v apart_o for_o supernatural_a use_n and_o end_n not_o to_o convey_v in_o any_o natural_a way_n such_o and_o such_o thing_n but_o in_o a_o supernatural_a way_n through_o the_o institution_n of_o god_n and_o so_o it_o come_v to_o be_v worship_n have_v we_o not_o i_o say_v a_o command_n for_o this_o it_o be_v superstition_n and_o idolatry_n for_o we_o to_o make_v use_n of_o such_o creature_n for_o such_o end_n if_o any_o man_n in_o the_o world_n shall_v have_v appoint_v a_o piece_n of_o bread_n or_o a_o draught_n of_o wine_n to_o have_v signify_v and_o seal_v the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n it_o have_v be_v superstition_n in_o any_o and_o will-worship_n and_o sinful_a and_o abominable_a to_o you_o but_o we_o be_v to_o look_v upon_o god_n set_v apart_o these_o creature_n for_o such_o holy_a and_o solemn_a end_n and_o therefore_o when_o we_o come_v to_o be_v exercise_v in_o they_o we_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n and_o we_o come_v likewise_o to_o tender_v up_o our_o homage_n to_o god_n when_o we_o come_v to_o attend_v upon_o he_o in_o such_o ordinance_n as_o these_o be_v to_o tender_v up_o that_o homage_n that_o be_v due_a from_o we_o poor_a creature_n unto_o such_o a_o infinite_a and_o glorious_a god_n and_o therefore_o we_o draw_v nigh_o to_o he_o great_a mystery_n of_o salvation_n and_o deep_a counsel_n of_o god_n concern_v eternal_a life_n be_v present_v before_o we_o in_o these_o outward_a element_n of_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n and_o action_n thereof_o now_o when_o we_o come_v to_o eat_v and_o to_o drink_v those_o thing_n that_o be_v appoint_v to_o set_v forth_o the_o great_a mystery_n of_o salvation_n and_o the_o deep_a of_o the_o counsel_n of_o god_n concern_v man_n eternal_a good_a wherein_o especal_o god_n will_v glorify_v himself_o we_o have_v need_v there_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n for_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v very_o great_a and_o glorious_a that_o be_v present_v unto_o we_o 2._o this_o ordinance_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n or_o the_o communion_n it_o be_v a_o ordinance_n that_o christ_n have_v leave_v to_o his_o church_n out_o of_o the_o abundance_n of_o his_o love_n and_o therefore_o you_o shall_v find_v if_o you_o read_v in_o the_o institution_n of_o it_o in_o the_o 25_o of_o matthew_n that_o the_o same_o night_n wherein_o christ_n be_v betray_v he_o take_v bread_n and_o break_v it_o though_o christ_n be_v to_o die_v the_o next_o day_n and_o to_o encounter_v with_o the_o warth_fw-mi of_o god_n yea_o that_o very_a night_n he_o be_v to_o be_v in_o a_o agony_n and_o to_o sweat_v drop_n of_o water_n and_o blood_n and_o the_o next_o day_n to_o die_v and_o to_o have_v these_o trial_n of_o wrath_n power_v upon_o he_o so_o as_o to_o put_v he_o to_o cry_v out_o my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o yet_o he_o busy_v his_o thought_n that_o every_o night_n to_o institute_v this_o supper_n sure_o this_o must_v be_v a_o great_a ordinance_n &_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o love_n of_o christ_n in_o it_o christ_n see_v that_o his_o church_n have_v need_n of_o it_o that_o he_o shall_v that_o night_n when_o he_o be_v betray_v have_v his_o thought_n busy_v about_o such_o a_o thing_n as_o this_o be_v one_o will_v think_v at_o that_o time_n that_o he_o have_v enough_o to_o take_v up_o his_o thought_n concern_v himself_o be_v to_o encounter_v with_o the_o law_n and_o with_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n for_o man_n sin_n but_o for_o all_o that_o great_a work_n christ_n have_v to_o encounter_v with_o yet_o his_o thought_n be_v busy_v about_o this_o great_a ordinance_n of_o the_o institution_n of_o the_o supper_n and_o therefore_o there_o be_v great_a love_n in_o it_o christ_n see_v that_o it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o great_a moment_n now_o if_o it_o be_v so_o then_o there_o be_v great_a cause_n why_o we_o shall_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o such_o a_o ordinance_n as_o this_o be_v and_o not_o to_o account_v it_o as_o a_o common_a and_o ordinary_a thing_n 3._o we_o must_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o this_o because_o it_o be_v the_o sacrament_n of_o of_o our_o communion_n with_o christ_n wherein_o we_o come_v to_o have_v such_o a_o near_a union_n and_o communion_n with_o he_o as_o to_o eat_v his_o flesh_n and_o to_o drink_v his_o blood_n and_o to_o sit_v at_o his_o table_n we_o come_v to_o have_v communion_n with_o christ_n even_o in_o all_o our_o sense_n now_o christ_n come_v so_o full_o to_o we_o that_o call_v upon_o we_o to_o sanctify_v his_o name_n when_o we_o come_v before_o he_o 4._o in_o this_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n be_v seal_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n come_v to_o be_v seal_v in_o both_o the_o part_n of_o it_o now_o when_o we_o come_v to_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n both_o to_o have_v the_o seal_n on_o his_o part_n and_o the_o seal_n on_o we_o sure_o this_o must_v needs_o call_v for_o a_o sanctify_a use_n of_o such_o a_o thing_n as_o be_v so_o holy_a as_o this_o be_v and_o that_o be_v the_o first_o reason_n why_o we_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o this_o because_o if_o we_o be_v in_o ordinary_a eat_n and_o drink_v we_o must_v do_v it_o then_o in_o this_o wherein_o there_o be_v so_o much_o of_o god_n wherein_o the_o mystery_n of_o godliness_n be_v set_v before_o we_o wherein_o there_o be_v so_o much_o of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n wherein_o we_o be_v to_o have_v close_a communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n and_o wherein_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n come_v to_o be_v seal_v on_o both_o side_n there_o have_v need_v therefore_o be_v sanctify_v of_o god_n name_n in_o the_o use_n of_o it_o second_o consider_v this_o that_o there_o be_v no_o duty_n in_o all_o the_o book_n of_o god_n that_o i_o know_v of_o that_o be_v urge_v with_o more_o strength_n and_o severity_n than_o this_o be_v as_o in_o that_o place_n 1_o cor._n 11._o show_v where_o you_o have_v require_v of_o every_o one_o that_o come_v to_o receive_v the_o bread_n and_o wine_n in_o the_o lord_n supper_n that_o they_o shall_v examine_v themselves_o and_o so_o eat_v and_o you_o have_v the_o most_o dreadful_a expression_n against_o those_o that_o do_v not_o do_v it_o that_o i_o know_v be_v mention_v against_o the_o neglect_n of_o any_o duty_n in_o to_o any_o wicked_a man_n come_v to_o partake_v of_o this_o holy_a mystery_n of_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n there_o be_v divers_a thing_n further_o about_o this_o and_o the_o special_a thing_n i_o think_v of_o be_v to_o show_v you_o the_o holy_a qualification_n that_o there_o ought_v to_o be_v but_o this_o i_o conceive_v to_o be_v the_o necessary_a and_o i_o shall_v not_o have_v have_v peace_n in_o my_o own_o conscience_n as_o be_v faithful_a to_o you_o in_o what_o i_o be_o speak_v of_o sanctife_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o this_o ordinance_n if_o i_o shall_v not_o have_v mention_v this_o that_o i_o have_v speak_v unto_o you_o and_o there_o be_v a_o error_n on_o both_o side_n that_o i_o desire_v to_o meet_v withal_o either_o those_o that_o come_v hand_n over_o head_n and_o think_v it_o concern_v they_o not_o at_o all_o with_o who_o they_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n but_o to_o look_v to_o their_o own_o heart_n and_o there_o be_v a_o error_n on_o the_o other_o side_n that_o if_o they_o do_v what_o they_o can_v to_o keep_v they_o away_o and_o yet_o if_o they_o shall_v be_v suffer_v to_o come_v they_o may_v not_o come_v to_o partake_v of_o those_o thing_n now_o it_o be_v very_o useful_a for_o we_o to_o know_v what_o we_o shall_v do_v in_o this_o case_n sermon_n xii_o leviticus_n 10._o 3._o i_o will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o they_o that_o come_v nigh_o i_o i_o shall_v add_v something_o to_o one_o particular_a that_o i_o have_v the_o last_o day_n concern_v peoples_n withdraw_v from_o such_o a_o congregation_n where_o they_o can_v not_o receive_v all_o the_o ordinance_n of_o jesus_n christ_n as_o now_o if_o i_o be_v in_o a_o church_n where_o i_o can_v have_v but_o a_o piece_n of_o the_o sacrament_n suppose_v they_o deal_v with_o i_o as_o the_o papist_n do_v with_o the_o people_n that_o be_v they_o will_v give_v they_o the_o bread_n and_o not_o the_o wine_n certain_o i_o be_v not_o bind_v to_o stay_v with_o they_o then_o but_o i_o be_v bind_v to_o go_v where_o i_o may_v have_v the_o whole_a sacrament_n so_o if_o a_o church_n will_v give_v i_o some_o one_o ordinance_n and_o not_o another_o i_o confess_v so_o long_o as_o there_o be_v hope_n that_o i_o may_v enjoy_v it_o and_o that_o they_o be_v in_o a_o way_n for_o enjoyment_n i_o think_v there_o shall_v be_v a_o great_a forbearance_n to_o a_o church_n as_o well_o as_o to_o a_o particular_a person_n as_o i_o must_v not_o withdraw_v from_o a_o particular_a man_n where_o there_o be_v hope_n still_o of_o his_o reformation_n that_o there_o may_v come_v good_a of_o my_o forbearance_n so_o towards_o a_o church_n much_o more_o but_o i_o say_v if_o i_o can_v enjoy_v neither_o do_v there_o appear_v any_o hope_n of_o enjoyment_n of_o all_o ordinance_n certain_o it_o be_v but_o a_o cruelty_n to_o force_v man_n to_o stay_v there_o when_o as_o otherwhere_o they_o may_v enjoy_v all_o ordinance_n for_o the_o good_a of_o their_o soul_n and_o this_o can_v be_v schism_n thus_o to_o do_v as_o now_o if_o this_o schism_n suppose_v a_o man_n be_v in_o a_o place_n and_o join_v in_o such_o a_o communion_n for_o his_o outward_a benefit_n he_o may_v remove_v his_o dwell_n from_o one_o place_n to_o another_o if_o he_o can_v have_v better_a trade_n in_o another_o place_n than_o certain_o if_o he_o may_v have_v more_o ordinance_n for_o the_o edification_n of_o his_o soul_n he_o may_v as_o well_o remove_v from_o one_o to_o another_o as_o he_o may_v remove_v if_o his_o trade_n be_v better_a in_o one_o place_n than_o another_o christ_n will_v have_v all_o his_o people_n look_v to_o the_o edification_n of_o their_o soul_n and_o shall_v i_o account_v that_o schism_n when_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n mere_o out_o of_o tenderness_n and_o a_o desire_n to_o enjoy_v jesus_n christ_n in_o all_o his_o ordinance_n for_o the_o benefit_n of_o there_o soul_n they_o find_v such_o want_n to_o there_o soul_n of_o all_o ordinance_n that_o though_o they_o may_v have_v brand_v no_o that_n schism_n when_o there_o be_v a_o violent_a rend_n out_o of_o malice_n for_o the_o want_n of_o love_n for_o as_o a_o postasie_n be_v a_o rend_n from_o the_o head_n so_o schism_n from_o the_o body_n that_o be_v when_o it_o be_v out_o of_o a_o evil_a spirit_n from_o envy_n or_o from_o malice_n from_o want_n of_o love_n or_o from_o any_o base_a sinister_a end_n and_o upon_o no_o just_a ground_n but_o now_o when_o it_o be_v mere_o out_o of_o love_n to_o jesus_n christ_n that_o i_o may_v have_v more_o edification_n to_o my_o soul_n and_o still_o i_o retain_v love_n to_o the_o saint_n that_o be_v there_o as_o they_o be_v in_o communion_n and_o so_o far_o as_o they_o have_v any_o thing_n good_a among_o they_o i_o hold_v communion_n with_o they_o in_o that_o only_o i_o desire_v in_o humility_n and_o in_o meekness_n that_o i_o may_v be_v in_o such_o a_o place_n where_o my_o soul_n may_v be_v most_o edify_v where_o i_o may_v enjoy_v all_o those_o ordinance_n that_o last_o that_o that_o must_v make_v all_o up_o and_o without_o which_o all_o the_o other_o be_v nothing_o it_o be_v that_o you_o must_v tender_v up_o all_o your_o worship_n in_o the_o name_n of_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n we_o read_v in_o levit._n 16._o 13._o that_o when_o aaron_n be_v to_o tender_v up_o the_o incense_n he_o be_v to_o put_v the_o incense_n on_o the_o fire_n before_o the_o lord_n that_o the_o cloud_n of_o the_o incense_n may_v cover_v the_o mercy-seat_n that_o be_v upon_o the_o testimony_n that_o he_o die_v not_o mark_v it_o be_v as_o much_o now_o the_o incense_n shall_v cover_v the_o mercy-seat_n so_o our_o prayer_n must_v go_v up_o to_o jesus_n christ_n must_v be_v upon_o he_o and_o so_o must_v be_v accept_v by_o the_o father_n and_o as_o we_o read_v in_o judg._n 13._o 20._o when_o monah_n offer_v a_o sacrifice_n the_o text_n say_v that_o the_o angel_n of_o the_o lord_n ascend_v in_o the_o flame_n this_o angel_n of_o god_n here_o who_o we_o be_v to_o offer_v all_o our_o sacrifice_n and_o this_o altar_n must_v sanctify_v the_o gift_n we_o can_v never_o have_v our_o gift_n sanctify_v no_o nor_o god_n name_v sanctify_v in_o this_o gift_n except_o it_o be_v offer_v upon_o this_o altar_n and_o our_o faith_n act_v upon_o jesus_n christ_n people_n little_a think_v of_o this_o but_o of_o other_o thing_n viz._n that_o when_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n that_o be_v to_o come_v and_o tender_v up_o all_o to_o the_o father_n in_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n christ_n how_o many_o man_n and_o woman_n that_o have_v be_v professor_n of_o religion_n twenty_o or_o thirty_o year_n and_o yet_o not_o acquaint_v with_o this_o great_a mystery_n of_o godliness_n to_o tender_v up_o all_o to_o god_n in_o the_o name_n of_o his_o son_n this_o be_v that_o that_o upon_o divers_a occasion_n i_o have_v speak_v unto_o and_o be_o willing_a upon_o every_o occasion_n as_o i_o meet_v with_o it_o to_o speak_v of_o consider_v what_o the_o scripture_n say_v of_o god_n and_o then_o let_v we_o see_v what_o suitable_a disposition_n we_o shall_v have_v in_o we_o unto_o those_o thing_n that_o the_o scripture_n say_v of_o god_n 1._o first_o you_o know_v the_o scripture_n say_v that_o god_n be_v a_o spirit_n in_o joh._n 4._o 24._o then_o present_o christ_n say_v that_o he_o that_o worship_v he_o must_v worship_v he_o in_o spirit_n that_o be_v there_o must_v be_v a_o sutableness_n in_o our_o worship_n to_o what_o god_n be_v be_v god_n a_o spirit_n then_o all_o that_o worship_v he_o must_v worship_v he_o in_o spirit_n and_o truth_n that_o be_v thus_o when_o i_o be_o to_o go_v to_o worship_n god_n i_o must_v consider_v of_o he_o as_o he_o be_v a_o infinite_a and_o glorious_a spirit_n well_o then_o sure_o bodily_a worship_n be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o i_o though_o i_o do_v kneel_v down_o in_o prayer_n or_o
sometime_o the_o disease_n may_v be_v a_o hindrance_n yet_o it_o be_v ordinary_a that_o those_o that_o in_o their_o constant_a way_n do_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n they_o do_v lie_v comfortable_o upon_o their_o sick_a bed_n and_o a_o glorious_a entrance_n be_v make_v for_o they_o into_o the_o everlasting_a kingdom_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n and_o then_o again_o all_o thing_n be_v sanctify_v unto_o they_o as_o on_o the_o other_o side_n those_o that_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n all_o thing_n be_v curse_v to_o they_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o make_v conscience_n of_o sanctify_a god_n name_v in_o duty_n god_n care_v not_o to_o sanctify_v any_o thing_n for_o thy_o good_a but_o now_o those_o that_o make_v conscience_n of_o sanctify_a god_n name_v in_o holy_a duty_n the_o lord_n take_v care_n that_o all_o thing_n shall_v be_v sanctify_v for_o their_o good_a for_o the_o surtherance_n of_o their_o eternal_a good_a and_o however_o it_o be_v into_o thy_o heart_n about_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n you_o have_v have_v only_o the_o point_n in_o general_n open_v to_o you_o oh_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n will_v bring_v thing_n and_o prayer_n other_o thing_n come_v under_o worship_n but_o yet_o these_o be_v the_o three_o chief_a duty_n of_o worship_n and_o i_o intend_v to_o speak_v to_o all_o these_o three_o and_o to_o show_v how_o we_o shall_v sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o draw_v nigh_o unto_o he_o in_o the_o word_n sacrament_n and_o prayer_n we_o may_v choose_v several_a text_n for_o all_o these_o but_o they_o fall_v full_a within_o the_o general_n and_o therefore_o it_o shall_v be_v sufficient_a for_o to_o ground_v the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o these_o duty_n of_o worship_n upon_o this_o text._n 1._o of_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n that_o which_o we_o be_v to_o speak_v to_o this_o morning_n it_o be_v the_o sanctify_a of_o the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o his_o word_n if_o you_o will_v have_v the_o ground_n of_o what_o we_o be_v to_o say_v concern_v this_o in_o a_o particular_a scripture_n you_o may_v have_v it_o in_o luke_n 8._o 18._o take_v heed_n therefore_o how_o you_o hear_v it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n that_o be_v good_a and_o no_o question_n but_o god_n be_v please_v with_o the_o willingness_n of_o people_n to_o come_v to_o hear_v his_o word_n but_o you_o must_v not_o rest_v bare_o in_o hear_v but_o take_v heed_n how_o you_o hear_v now_o this_o be_v a_o point_n of_o great_a consequence_n and_o i_o hope_v it_o may_v do_v good_a to_o help_v to_o make_v many_o sermon_n to_o be_v profitable_a to_o you_o and_o the_o point_n i_o hope_v be_v seasonable_a and_o will_v be_v very_o suitable_a unto_o you_o for_o those_o that_o come_v to_o hear_v so_o soon_o in_o a_o morning_n and_o be_v willing_a even_o in_o hard_a weather_n to_o come_v out_o of_o their_o bed_n they_o give_v some_o good_a testimony_n that_o they_o do_v desire_n to_o honour_n god_n in_o their_o hear_n and_o to_o get_v good_a by_o their_o hear_n and_o it_o be_v pity_n that_o labour_n and_o pain_n shall_v be_v bestow_v and_o no_o profit_n but_o hurt_v rather_o get_v by_o it_o which_o god_n forbid_v therefore_o now_o i_o be_o to_o speak_v to_o a_o point_n that_o may_v help_v you_o so_o to_o hear_v as_o may_v recompense_v all_o your_o labour_n and_o pain_n in_o hear_v in_o preach_v to_o those_o that_o come_v to_o hear_v so_o that_o they_o may_v get_v good_a and_o benefit_n by_o it_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o encouragement_n than_o to_o such_o as_o come_v in_o a_o formal_a way_n because_o they_o use_v to_o come_v therefore_o this_o point_n be_v a_o great_a point_n i_o shall_v open_v it_o somewhat_o large_o and_o cast_v into_o this_o method_n first_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o that_o the_o hear_n of_o god_n word_n be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n for_o otherwise_o i_o can_v not_o ground_v it_o upon_o my_o text_n second_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o how_o we_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o his_o word_n either_o in_o regard_n of_o preparation_n unto_o it_o or_o our_o behaviour_n in_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n three_o why_o it_o be_v that_o god_n will_v be_v sanctify_v in_o this_o ordinance_n of_o he_o four_o how_o god_n will_v sanctify_v himself_o in_o such_o as_o do_v not_o sanctify_v his_o name_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o his_o word_n five_o how_o god_n will_v sanctify_v his_o name_n in_o way_n of_o mercy_n to_o those_o that_o be_v careful_a to_o sanctify_v his_o name_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n these_o be_v the_o five_o principal_a thing_n that_o concern_v this_o argument_n for_o the_o first_o that_o the_o hear_n of_o god_n word_n it_o be_v a_o part_n of_o god_n worship_n you_o hear_v in_o the_o open_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n in_o the_o general_n what_o it_o be_v i_o tell_v you_o it_o be_v a_o tender_v up_o of_o the_o creature_n homage_n to_o god_n as_o testimony_n of_o the_o respect_n that_o the_o creature_n do_v owe_v to_o god_n now_o if_o that_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o worship_n certain_o the_o hear_n of_o god_n word_n it_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n for_o in_o the_o hear_n of_o god_n word_n we_o first_o do_v profess_v our_o dependence_n upon_o god_n for_o the_o know_v of_o his_o mind_n and_o the_o way_n to_o eternal_a life_n every_o time_n we_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n if_o we_o know_v what_o we_o do_v we_o do_v thus_o much_o we_o do_v profess_v that_o we_o do_v depend_v upon_o the_o lord_n god_n for_o the_o know_v of_o his_o mind_n and_o the_o way_n and_o rule_n to_o eternal_a life_n we_o do_v as_o much_o as_o if_o we_o shall_v say_v lord_n of_o ourselves_o we_o neither_o know_v thou_o nor_o the_o way_n and_o mean_n how_o we_o shall_v come_v to_o be_v save_v and_o therefore_o that_o we_o may_v testify_v our_o dependence_n upon_o thou_o for_o this_o thing_n we_o here_o present_v ourselves_o before_o thou_o now_o this_o be_v a_o testimony_n of_o the_o high_a respect_n we_o owe_v to_o god_n second_o the_o hear_n of_o god_n word_n be_v a_o part_n of_o his_o worship_n because_o in_o it_o we_o come_v to_o wait_v upon_o god_n in_o the_o way_n of_o a_o ordinance_n to_o have_v that_o good_a convey_v to_o we_o by_o way_n of_o a_o ordinance_n beyond_o what_o the_o thing_n in_o itself_o
2._o 1._o you_o have_v a_o scripture_n to_o the_o same_o purpose_n about_o hide_v the_o commandment_n within_o we_o and_o then_o in_o 1_o john_n 2._o 14._o i_o write_v unto_o you_o young_a man_n because_o you_o be_v strong_a and_o the_o word_n of_o god_n abide_v in_o you_o and_o you_o have_v overcome_v the_o wich_v one_o i_o have_v write_v unto_o you_o young_a man_n you_o be_v young_a you_o have_v strong_a nature_n and_o so_o strength_n of_o nature_n for_o god_n but_o how_o come_v this_o to_o pass_v you_o be_v strong_a and_o the_o word_n of_o god_n abide_v in_o you_o here_o be_v a_o excellent_a scripture_n for_o all_o young_a man_n you_o have_v your_o memory_n fresh_a and_o if_o you_o will_v exercise_v your_o memory_n about_o any_o thing_n it_o shall_v be_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n it_o be_v a_o comely_a and_o a_o excellent_a thing_n to_o see_v young_a one_o to_o have_v the_o word_n of_o god_n abide_v in_o they_o that_o if_o you_o come_v to_o they_o not_o only_o a_o week_n but_o a_o month_n after_o they_o have_v hear_v the_o word_n they_o be_v able_a to_o give_v you_o a_o account_n of_o it_o i_o be_o very_o persuade_v that_o there_o be_v many_o young_a one_o in_o this_o place_n that_o be_v able_a to_o give_v you_o old_a one_o if_o you_o ask_v they_o a_o account_n of_o what_o it_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o worship_n and_o why_o because_o the_o word_n of_o god_n abide_v in_o they_o it_o be_v the_o honour_n of_o young_a man_n to_o have_v the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o abide_v in_o they_o and_o hereby_o they_o overcome_v the_o wicked_a one_o and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n many_o young_a people_n that_o do_v come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n it_o may_v be_v they_o be_v draw_v to_o it_o by_o other_o or_o it_o may_v be_v they_o love_v to_o have_v a_o walk_n in_o the_o morning_n but_o the_o word_n of_o god_n abide_v not_o in_o they_o and_o therefore_o when_o the_o wicked_a one_o come_v with_o temptation_n the_o week_n after_o they_o be_v overcome_v by_o he_o but_o those_o that_o have_v the_o word_n of_o god_n abide_v in_o they_o they_o overcome_v the_o wicked_a one_o and_o so_o in_o job_n 8._o 31._o you_o have_v a_o very_a remarkable_a scripture_n for_o this_o purpose_n of_o keep_v the_o word_n after_o we_o have_v hear_v it_o then_o say_v jesus_n to_o those_o which_o believe_v on_o he_o if_o you_o continue_v in_o my_o word_n then_o be_v you_o my_o disciple_n indeed_o i_o beseech_v you_o observe_v it_o it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o jew_n do_v believe_v in_o christ_n and_o yet_o say_v christ_n if_o you_o continue_v gospel_n be_v the_o law_n can_v work_v saving_o upon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n to_o bring_v salvation_n those_o that_o be_v mere_o legal_a they_o can_v hear_v the_o duty_n that_o be_v require_v but_o the_o word_n have_v no_o power_n to_o write_v in_o their_o heart_n what_o they_o do_v hear_v but_o now_o when_o you_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o be_v nigh_o you_o even_o in_o your_o very_a heart_n as_o well_o as_o in_o your_o ear_n god_n speak_v in_o it_o and_o it_o come_v into_o your_o heart_n and_o there_o it_o work_v efficacious_o which_o the_o law_n can_v the_o law_n be_v but_o a_o dead_a letter_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n if_o you_o come_v mere_o to_o hear_v the_o law_n preach_v add_v not_o in_o a_o evangelical_n way_n you_o may_v hear_v it_o a_o hundred_o time_n and_o it_o will_v never_o be_v write_v in_o your_o heart_n but_o when_o you_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o gospel_n in_o a_o evangelical_n way_n that_o will_v come_v to_o be_v write_v in_o your_o heart_n so_o that_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v nigh_o you_o but_o what_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o other_o say_v not_o who_o shall_v ascend_v up_o into_o heaven_n &_o c_o the_o meaning_n be_v this_o as_o if_o the_o apostle_n shall_v say_v the_o truth_n be_v while_o you_o have_v no_o other_o but_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n you_o be_v at_o a_o infinite_a uncertainty_n about_o your_o eternal_a estate_n the_o law_n say_v do_v and_o live_v but_o you_o can_v never_o know_v when_o you_o have_v do_v enough_o so_o as_o to_o be_v certain_a that_o you_o be_v well_o for_o eternity_n that_o say_v who_o shall_v ascend_v into_o heaven_n to_o know_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n concern_v i_o whether_o he_o will_v accept_v of_o i_o and_o of_o heaven_n and_o there_o see_v and_o read_v god_n book_n and_o so_o discover_v god_n mind_n concern_v he_o or_o go_v down_o to_o hell_n and_o so_o know_v whether_o that_o place_n be_v appoint_v for_o he_o or_o not_o except_o i_o can_v do_v one_o of_o these_o i_o can_v certain_o tell_v mere_o by_o the_o law_n whether_o i_o shall_v go_v to_o heaven_n or_o hell_n as_o you_o that_o be_v merchant_n and_o dealer_n abroad_o you_o be_v at_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o uncertainty_n what_o shall_v become_v of_o your_o estate_n indeed_o if_o i_o can_v send_v one_o over_o to_o the_o indies_n to_o tell_v i_o now_o my_o ship_n prosper_v than_o i_o can_v be_v at_o a_o certainty_n than_o i_o shall_v hear_v whether_o i_o be_v a_o rich_a man_n yea_o or_o no_o but_o except_o i_o can_v do_v such_o a_o thing_n i_o be_o at_o a_o uncertainty_n such_o be_v the_o expression_n here_o as_o if_o a_o poor_a soul_n shall_v say_v i_o will_v fain_o be_v save_v and_o loath_a to_o perish_v eternal_o but_o all_o the_o while_n the_o soul_n remain_v under_o the_o law_n it_o remain_v in_o a_o uncertain_a condition_n but_o now_o say_v he_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v nigh_o thou_o even_o in_o thy_o heart_n and_o that_o be_v the_o word_n that_o we_o preach_v that_o say_v rom._n 10._o 9_o if_o thou_o shall_v confess_v with_o thy_o mouth_n the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o shall_v believe_v in_o thy_o heart_n that_o god_n have_v raise_v he_o from_o the_o dead_a thou_o shall_v be_v save_v as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v this_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o be_v come_v into_o thy_o heart_n do_v assure_v thy_o soul_n of_o thy_o eternal_a estate_n so_o that_o though_o thou_o can_v not_o go_v up_o to_o heaven_n nor_o go_v down_o to_o hell_n yet_o thou_o have_v that_o in_o thy_o heart_n that_o do_v as_o it_o be_v assure_v thou_o that_o thou_o shall_v be_v eternal_o save_v as_o if_o thou_o be_v able_a to_o go_v up_o to_o the_o high_a heaven_n and_o fetch_v news_n from_o thence_o oh_o now_o the_o good_a word_n of_o the_o gospel_n how_o shall_v we_o prize_v it_o and_o keep_v it_o in_o our_o heart_n for_o that_o be_v in_o our_o heart_n that_o will_v assure_v we_o of_o our_o salvation_n assurance_n and_o know_v this_o excellency_n there_o be_v in_o sanctify_a god_n name_v in_o hear_v the_o word_n i_o beseech_v you_o mark_v it_o that_o it_o be_v a_o more_o bless_a thing_n than_o if_o all_o communion_n of_o saint_n there_o be_v a_o duty_n and_o there_o be_v not_o any_o one_o but_o may_v do_v something_o towards_o it_o thus_o far_o every_o communicant_a in_o every_o communion_n of_o saint_n must_v go_v if_o there_o be_v a_o wicked_a man_n there_o if_o you_o come_v to_o know_v it_o and_o do_v not_o go_v thus_o far_o as_o i_o have_v speak_v you_o be_v defile_v by_o he_o you_o be_v without_o christ_n but_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o christ_n there_o be_v a_o fullness_n for_o the_o satisfy_n of_o my_o soul_n that_o i_o have_v have_v of_o christ_n sometime_o in_o the_o word_n and_o sometime_o in_o prayer_n that_o have_v be_v sweet_a unto_o i_o but_o i_o expect_v a_o further_a communion_n with_o christ_n here_o for_o this_o be_v the_o grand_a ordinance_n for_o communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n indeed_o the_o word_n in_o this_o respect_n it_o be_v beyond_o this_o ordinance_n that_o be_v it_o be_v not_o only_o for_o the_o increase_n of_o grace_n but_o for_o the_o beget_n this_o be_v only_o for_o the_o increase_n of_o grace_n and_o not_o appoint_v for_o the_o beget_n now_o in_o that_o respect_n the_o word_n be_v above_o the_o sacrament_n but_o now_o this_o sacrament_n be_v a_o more_o full_a ordinance_n for_o communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n this_o be_v the_o communion_n of_o the_o body_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o of_o his_o blood_n and_o much_o wholesome_a diet_n they_o have_v no_o mind_n at_o all_o to_o it_o so_o it_o be_v with_o man_n of_o the_o world_n they_o fill_v their_o heart_n with_o the_o trash_n of_o this_o world_n and_o with_o sensual_a delight_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o when_o they_o come_v to_o such_o a_o great_a ordinance_n to_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n that_o then_o they_o feel_v no_o want_n at_o all_o of_o christ_n only_o they_o come_v and_o take_v a_o little_a piece_n of_o bread_n and_o a_o draught_n of_o wine_n but_o for_o any_o strong_a pause_v desire_n to_o meet_v with_o jesus_n christ_n there_o in_o the_o ordinance_n to_o come_v so_o as_o they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o live_v without_o christ_n even_o as_o a_o man_n that_o be_v a_o hunger_v can_v live_v without_o his_o meat_n and_o drink_n and_o so_o for_o the_o soul_n to_o have_v such_o a_o disposition_n after_o christ_n this_o be_v a_o rare_a thing_n but_o know_v that_o god_n name_n be_v not_o sanctify_v unless_o thou_o do_v come_v in_o such_o a_o way_n unto_o his_o holy_a sacrament_n that_o be_v the_o four_o thing_n hungry_a and_o thirsty_a desire_n after_o christ_n from_o a_o deep_a sense_n of_o the_o need_n of_o he_o and_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o excellency_n in_o he_o 5._o in_o the_o five_o place_n there_o must_v be_v a_o exercise_n of_o faith_n for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n not_o able_a to_o discern_v the_o body_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o by_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n if_o thou_o come_v only_o with_o bodily_a eye_n to_o look_v upon_o what_o be_v here_o thou_o see_v nothing_o but_o a_o little_a bread_n and_o wine_n but_o now_o where_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n be_v there_o be_v a_o real_a appearance_n of_o jesus_n christ_n to_o the_o soul_n as_o if_o christ_n be_v bodily_a present_n and_o we_o need_v not_o have_v the_o bread_n trune_v in_o to_o his_o body_n for_o faith_n can_v see_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n through_o the_o bread_n and_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n gush_v in_o the_o wine_n and_o it_o be_v a_o mighty_a thing_n to_o have_v christ_n and_o such_o spiritual_a thing_n make_v real_a and_o not_o to_o be_v a_o fancy_n if_o one_o look_v upon_o the_o fire_n that_o be_v paint_v one_o can_v heat_v one_o self_n in_o cold_a wether_n with_o that_o but_o fire_n that_o be_v real_o burn_v upon_o the_o hearth_n so_o those_o that_o come_v to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n and_o not_o come_v with_o faith_n that_o have_v only_o the_o eye_n of_o their_o body_n they_o only_o see_v as_o it_o be_v a_o paint_a christ_n they_o do_v not_o see_v christ_n real_o his_o body_n and_o blood_n and_o those_o great_a mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v not_o present_v as_o real_a thing_n to_o their_o soul_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o they_o go_v do_v thou_o then_o oh_o soul_n how_o do_v thy_o soul_n work_v in_o close_v with_o christ_n as_o thy_o soul_n do_v then_o in_o close_v with_o christ_n so_o it_o must_v now_o renew_v the_o work_n there_o must_v be_v a_o renewal_a of_o the_o work_n at_o that_o time_n so_o that_o when_o you_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n you_o must_v not_o think_v that_o it_o be_v then_o a_o time_n to_o listen_v to_o doubt_n fear_n and_o scruple_n no_o but_o it_o be_v a_o time_n that_o god_n call_v for_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n the_o cast_n of_o the_o soul_n upon_o christ_n and_o his_o merit_n
