barren_a in_o devotion_n that_o ravel_v out_o all_o their_o thought_n and_o meditation_n in_o find_v out_o the_o secret_n of_o god_n such_o thing_n as_o god_n have_v keep_v secret_a unto_o himself_o these_o man_n be_v very_o barren_a and_o dry_a in_o practical_a divinity_n i_o have_v read_v a_o story_n of_o a_o man_n that_o study_v the_o critical_a question_n of_o school-divinity_n so_o long_o that_o he_o forget_v to_o say_v his_o prayer_n he_o can_v not_o pray_v and_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o those_o that_o empty_a all_o their_o strength_n and_o ability_n in_o study_v speculation_n and_o notion_n be_v very_o barren_a in_o matter_n of_o practice_n and_o therefore_o my_o counsel_n be_v that_o you_o will_v especial_o pick_v out_o subject_n that_o will_v help_v you_o to_o be_v wean_v from_o the_o world_n to_o walk_v humble_o with_o god_n that_o will_v kindle_v a_o holy_a fire_n of_o love_n in_o your_o soul_n to_o christ_n and_o will_v make_v you_o more_o like_a unto_o christ_n and_o more_o conformable_a to_o his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n it_o be_v true_a a_o great_a understanding_n and_o a_o acute_a wit_n will_v make_v a_o learned_a man_n but_o it_o be_v the_o holy_a life_n that_o make_v a_o good_a man_n 4._o pick_n and_o choose_v out_o such_o subject_n especial_o to_o meditate_v upon_o that_o be_v most_o seasonable_a to_o thy_o condition_n most_o suitable_a to_o thy_o relation_n and_o to_o that_o estate_n in_o which_o god_n have_v set_v you_o for_o these_o will_n most_o affect_v the_o heart_n as_o for_o example_n to_o give_v you_o three_o or_o four_o instance_n 1._o suppose_v thou_o be_v a_o man_n trouble_v in_o mind_n exceed_o deject_v thou_o be_v ready_a to_o despair_v because_o thou_o be_v a_o great_a sinner_n and_o thou_o think_v god_n will_v not_o be_v merciful_a unto_o thou_o and_o thou_o be_v afraid_a leave_v christ_n have_v forsake_v thou_o now_o i_o will_v have_v thou_o pick_v out_o such_o a_o subject_a to_o meditate_v upon_o that_o will_v suit_v thy_o condition_n i_o will_v have_v thou_o go_v and_o meditate_v of_o the_o willingness_n of_o christ_n to_o receive_v poor_a sinner_n not_o only_o the_o ability_n but_o the_o willingness_n of_o christ_n to_o pardon_v all_o that_o come_v unto_o to_o he_o jesus_n christ_n be_v not_o only_o able_a but_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o pardon_v a_o penitent_a sinner_n one_o that_o physician_n but_o the_o physician_n come_v of_o his_o own_o accord_n from_o heaven_n the_o son_n of_o man_n be_v come_v to_o seek_v and_o save_v that_o which_o be_v lose_v mat._n 18._o 11._o therefore_o he_o must_v needs_o be-willing_a for_o a_o physician_n to_o take_v such_o a_o journey_n and_o to_o come_v of_o his_o own_o accord_n and_o when_o he_o come_v here_o and_o see_v he_o can_v you_o shall_v come_v to_o he_o and_o he_o refuse_v you_o and_o when_o he_o be_v here_o upon_o earth_n he_o complain_v of_o nothing_o but_o that_o man_n will_v not_o come_v unto_o he_o you_o will_v not_o come_v unto_o i_o that_o you_o may_v have_v life_n he_o never_o complain_v of_o the_o greatness_n or_o the_o naughtiness_n of_o their_o disease_n he_o cure_v the_o disease_n of_o all_o that_o come_v unto_o he_o but_o all_o his_o complain_n be_v that_o they_o will_v not_o come_v unto_o he_o now_o do_v you_o go_v into_o your_o closet_n and_o meditate_v upon_o these_o thing_n and_o pray_v unto_o god_n to_o bless_v the_o meditation_n of_o these_o thing_n will_v not_o this_o cure_v your_o trouble_a conscience_n 2._o and_o again_o you_o that_o be_v trouble_v in_o conscience_n meditate_v of_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n and_o not_o only_o those_o promise_n that_o be_v make_v to_o those_o that_o have_v grace_n but_o meditate_v of_o the_o promise_n that_o god_n have_v make_v to_o give_v grace_n study_v the_o promise_v god_n have_v make_v not_o only_o to_o give_v pardon_n to_o they_o that_o repent_v but_o the_o promise_v god_n have_v make_v to_o give_v repentance_n to_o those_o that_o ask_v it_o god_n have_v not_o only_o promise_v to_o give_v pardon_n to_o those_o that_o believe_v and_o repent_v but_o god_n have_v promise_v to_o give_v repentance_n act._n 5._o 31._o and_o god_n thou_o be_v now_o a_o poor_a man_n not_o worth_a a_o halfpenny_n thou_o be_v a_o rich_a man_n the_o lord_n have_v blow_v upon_o all_o thou_o have_v this_o be_v a_o sad_a condition_n now_o i_o will_v have_v such_o a_o one_o spend_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o time_n in_o meditate_v of_o the_o wonderful_a providence_n of_o god_n towards_o his_o poor_a child_n consider_v how_o god_n feed_v the_o fowl_n of_o the_o air_n and_o the_o raven_n how_o god_n provide_v for_o the_o lily_n i_o will_v have_v he_o read_v mat._n 6._o from_o the_o 24_o verse_n to_o the_o end_n of_o that_o chapter_n consider_v which_o be_v the_o knotty_a and_o difficult_a part_n 2._o now_o i_o come_v to_o that_o which_o be_v the_o easy_a part_n of_o meditation_n i_o mean_v easy_a to_o understand_v but_o not_o easy_a to_o practise_v i_o come_v to_o that_o which_o be_v the_o best_a part_n of_o meditation_n the_o very_a life_n and_o soul_n of_o meditation_n and_o that_o be_v to_o help_v you_o to_o get_v your_o affection_n warm_v and_o heat_v by_o the_o thing_n you_o meditate_v upon_o for_o the_o work_n of_o the_o understanding_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o be_v as_o a_o divine_a pair_n of_o bellows_o to_o kindle_v and_o inflame_v the_o heart_n and_o affection_n the_o work_n of_o the_o understanding_n be_v to_o chew_v and_o prepare_v matter_n to_o help_v the_o affection_n now_o than_o i_o be_o to_o give_v you_o some_o direction_n and_o help_n for_o the_o affectionative_n part_n to_o get_v your_o affection_n warm_v and_o heat_v so_o as_o to_o stir_v up_o piety_n and_o devotion_n in_o your_o soul_n now_o for_o the_o work_n upon_o your_o affection_n learned_a man_n that_o write_v upon_o this_o subject_n propound_v six_o common-place-head_n as_o so_o many_o way_n to_o raise_v the_o affection_n and_o to_o get_v they_o so_o excite_v as_o to_o increase_v grace_n and_o holiness_n in_o the_o soul._n 1._o you_o must_v labour_v to_o get_v a_o relish_n and_o a_o savour_n of_o the_o thing_n you_o meditate_v upon_o 2._o you_o must_v complain_v before_o god_n for_o the_o want_n of_o that_o relish_n 3._o you_o must_v wish_v you_o have_v a_o supply_n of_o what_o you_o want_v of_o this_o relish_n and_o taste_v of_o the_o thing_n you_o meditate_v on_o 4._o you_o must_v confess_v your_o inability_n as_o of_o yourselves_o to_o do_v this_o 5._o you_o must_v petition_v to_o god_n for_o help_v 6._o you_o must_v confident_o believe_v god_n will_v help_v you_o here_o be_v six_o help_n for_o the_o affectionative_n part_n of_o meditation_n now_o that_o you_o may_v know_v the_o use_n of_o these_o help_n i_o shall_v crave_v leave_n to_o go_v over_o they_o all_o by_o way_n of_o instance_n i_o have_v give_v you_o a_o instance_n concern_v the_o sinfulness_n of_o sin_n i_o go_v over_o nine_o common-place_n head_n and_o show_v you_o how_o you_o shall_v enlarge_v in_o every_o particular_a about_o the_o sinfulness_n of_o sin_n now_o i_o will_v proceed_v further_o in_o this_o instance_n and_o show_v you_o how_o you_o shall_v make_v use_n of_o these_o particular_n to_o get_v your_o affection_n raise_v and_o warm_v and_o stir_v up_o to_o more_o holiness_n after_o that_o i_o have_v traverse_v all_o the_o head_n of_o reason_n and_o have_v consider_v the_o description_n the_o distribution_n cause_n and_o effect_n of_o sin_n now_o i_o come_v to_o the_o work_n of_o the_o affection_n and_o here_o 1._o i_o will_v labour_v to_o get_v my_o heart_n affect_v with_o the_o bitterness_n of_o sin_n i_o will_v labour_v to_o taste_v the_o bitterness_n of_o it_o and_o to_o get_v my_o heart_n in_o a_o mourn_a frame_n and_o i_o will_v thus_o say_v to_o myself_o oh_o my_o soul_n be_v sin_n so_o odious_a to_o god_n that_o no_o sacrifice_n but_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o blood_n of_o god_n can_v appease_v god_n wrath_n and_o shall_v it_o not_o be_v odious_a to_o i_o be_v sin_n so_o displease_v unto_o god_n and_o so_o defile_v to_o the_o soul_n that_o no_o bath_n but_o a_o bath_n of_o christ_n blood_n can_v wash_v away_o the_o stain_n of_o it_o and_o shall_v i_o make_v a_o mock_n of_o that_o sin_n that_o cost_v the_o blood_n of_o christ_n be_v sin_n a_o burden_n to_o christ_n and_o shall_v it_o not_o be_v a_o burden_n to_o i_o thus_o i_o will_v reason_v with_o myself_o do_v sin_n make_v christ_n shed_v drop_n of_o blood_n and_o shall_v it_o not_o make_v i_o shed_v a_o few_o tear_n do_v christ_n cry_v out_o my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o for_o our_o sin_n i_o mean_v for_o our_o sin_n he_o take_v upon_o he_o and_o shall_v i_o
