lord_n put_v people_n upon_o the_o trial_n try_v time_n even_o time_n like_o the_o time_n of_o the_o fuller_n purge_v his_o cloth_n and_o the_o goldsmith_n refine_n his_o mettle_n and_o there_o be_v more_o try_v time_n like_a to_o come_v have_v we_o not_o woeful_a experience_n of_o divers_a fall_v away_o some_o fall_v scandalous_o perhaps_o be_v the_o saint_n of_o god_n david_n and_o lot_n and_o noah_n and_o peter_n for_o so_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o some_o that_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n may_v yet_o notwithstanding_o fall_v into_o scandalous_a and_o offensive_a sin_n through_o their_o want_n of_o watchfulness_n and_o fear_v and_o carefulness_n but_o a_o great_a many_o do_v fall_v and_o fall_v scandalous_o yea_o many_o give_v all_o cause_n of_o fear_n that_o there_o never_o be_v the_o soundness_n and_o truth_n of_o grace_n in_o they_o they_o go_v out_o from_o we_o because_o they_o be_v not_o of_o we_o now_o i_o say_v consider_v that_o there_o be_v those_o that_o do_v fall_v such_o as_o take_v upon_o they_o the_o profession_n of_o religion_n and_o be_v eminent_a in_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n and_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o yet_o fall_v and_o fall_v desperate_o and_o damnable_o do_v it_o not_o concern_v we_o all_o to_o fear_v and_o upon_o fear_v to_o try_v ourselves_o when_o the_o apostle_n discourse_v of_o the_o fall_n of_o the_o jew_n how_o they_o be_v break_v and_o cast_v off_o what_o use_n do_v he_o teach_v the_o gentile_n to_o make_v of_o this_o let_v he_o that_o think_v he_o stand_v take_v heed_n lest_o he_o fall_v so_o say_v i_o be_v these_o such_o time_n that_o many_o fall_v away_o then_o such_o of_o we_o as_o do_v stand_v let_v we_o also_o take_v heed_n that_o we_o do_v not_o fall_v how_o shall_v we_o take_v heed_n of_o fall_v oh_o let_v we_o look_v to_o ourselves_o that_o we_o be_v sound_a the_o ordinary_a cause_n of_o fall_v away_o be_v rottenness_n and_o unsoundness_n when_o people_n in_o hypocrisy_n take_v up_o the_o profession_n of_o religion_n therefore_o let_v we_o not_o make_v that_o use_n of_o the_o fall_v of_o holy_a man_n as_o the_o people_n of_o the_o world_n do_v if_o there_o be_v any_o that_o fall_v into_o any_o scandalous_a sin_n and_o manifest_v himself_o to_o be_v naught_o at_o the_o heart_n what_o use_n do_v the_o world_n make_v of_o it_o to_o fly_v upon_o god_n and_o upon_o religion_n and_o upon_o all_o professor_n of_o piety_n and_o upon_o the_o minister_n and_o preacher_n of_o the_o word_n oh_o say_v they_o this_o be_v their_o religion_n they_o be_v all_o but_o hypocrite_n this_o will_v be_v the_o end_n of_o they_o all_o these_o kind_n of_o uses_n do_v the_o world_n make_v of_o the_o fall_v of_o upright_a man_n whereas_o alas_o there_o be_v nothing_o less_o use_v to_o be_v make_v of_o they_o than_o this_o if_o so_o be_v that_o people_n be_v not_o desperate_o malicious_a against_o god_n and_o all_o goodness_n and_o that_o they_o be_v not_o shameful_o ignorant_a they_o will_v never_o make_v this_o use_n of_o the_o fall_v and_o scandal_n of_o these_o man_n for_o first_o of_o all_o how_o can_v it_o blemish_n god_n or_o religion_n or_o good_a man_n because_o some_o that_o seem_v to_o be_v good_a and_o be_v not_o good_a do_v discover_v their_o rottenness_n and_o unsoundness_n by_o their_o fall_n what_o kind_n of_o blemish_n be_v it_o to_o the_o holy_a apostle_n and_o to_o the_o believer_n in_o the_o primitive_a church_n that_o some_o that_o be_v among_o they_o do_v go_v out_o from_o they_o what_o kind_n of_o blemish_n be_v it_o to_o the_o twelve_o apostle_n that_o one_o who_o christ_n keep_v familiar_a company_n with_o and_o be_v conversant_a with_o the_o apostle_n as_o brethren_n do_v prove_v a_o hypocrite_n be_v judas_n his_o desperate_a fall_n a_o sign_n that_o the_o religion_n and_o preach_v of_o christ_n be_v naught_o and_o the_o other_o disciple_n hypocrite_n none_o dare_v say_v so_o and_o if_o it_o be_v not_o then_o why_o shall_v it_o now_o be_v a_o sign_n they_o that_o do_v fall_v away_o they_o do_v therefore_o fall_v away_o because_o they_o be_v not_o religious_a and_o not_o because_o they_o be_v religious_a they_o therefore_o fall_v away_o because_o they_o do_v not_o observe_v the_o rule_n of_o that_o religion_n they_o profess_v and_o not_o because_o they_o profess_v it_o and_o as_o it_o argue_v thus_o a_o ignorance_n in_o people_n so_o further_o if_o so_o be_v that_o the_o world_n be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o gospel_n and_o work_n of_o god_n they_o will_v know_v that_o the_o lord_n have_v decree_v from_o all_o eternity_n that_o in_o all_o age_n of_o the_o church_n some_o that_o have_v be_v eminent_a in_o profession_n shall_v fall_v away_o there_o must_v be_v offence_n and_o scandal_n give_v the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n himself_o lay_v down_o the_o rule_n matth._n 18.7_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o offence_n come_v the_o lord_n have_v foretell_v it_o and_o have_v ever_o make_v it_o good_a in_o god_n and_o according_o apply_v the_o touchstone_n of_o the_o scripture_n i_o be_o confident_a by_o the_o sign_n and_o evidence_n of_o grace_n that_o be_v in_o the_o scripture_n people_n may_v come_v to_o discern_v their_o own_o heart_n not_o by_o any_o virtue_n or_o skill_n of_o their_o own_o but_o by_o the_o virtue_n and_o skill_n of_o god_n who_o power_n go_v along_o with_o his_o word_n it_o be_v true_a a_o hypocrite_n may_v deceive_v the_o quickest-eyed_n minister_n in_o the_o world_n if_o he_o will_v not_o open_o lay_v his_o heart_n before_o he_o and_o therefore_o good_a minister_n oftentimes_o speak_v peace_n to_o they_o to_o who_o no_o peace_n belong_v yet_o they_o speak_v the_o truth_n according_a to_o those_o evidence_n that_o be_v express_v to_o they_o be_v not_o the_o wise_a virgin_n deceive_v in_o the_o foolish_a be_v not_o david_n deceive_v in_o achitophel_n be_v not_o the_o disciple_n deceive_v in_o judas_n yet_o notwithstanding_o as_o i_o say_v if_o people_n will_v sincere_o deal_v with_o their_o fellow_n brethren_n and_o with_o their_o minister_n and_o when_o god_n call_v upon_o they_o to_o try_v themselves_o if_o they_o will_v turn_v their_o inside_n outward_a if_o they_o will_v naked_o lay_v open_a the_o state_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n so_o clear_o as_o they_o can_v discern_v i_o doubt_v not_o but_o the_o minister_n of_o god_n from_o the_o word_n of_o god_n may_v speak_v assure_v peace_n and_o give_v they_o certain_a evidence_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o grace_n be_v not_o these_o thing_n thus_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a we_o shall_v ever_o come_v to_o assurance_n it_o be_v in_o vain_a that_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v we_o so_o many_o sign_n and_o token_n if_o by_o observe_v and_o try_v we_o may_v not_o come_v to_o discern_v the_o estate_n of_o our_o heart_n therefore_o for_o such_o of_o you_o as_o in_o truth_n find_v from_o time_n to_o time_n by_o these_o and_o the_o like_a evidence_n the_o truth_n of_o grace_n in_o you_o know_v you_o that_o there_o be_v ground_n of_o comfort_n for_o your_o soul_n and_o as_o this_o be_v ground_n of_o comfort_n to_o you_o that_o have_v these_o thing_n so_o it_o be_v ground_n of_o terror_n to_o those_o that_o want_v they_o i_o know_v you_o be_v almost_o all_o frequenter_n of_o the_o word_n speaker_n well_o of_o the_o practice_n of_o religion_n happy_o you_o have_v some_o reformation_n in_o you_o happy_o you_o have_v some_o minister_n that_o speak_v peace_n to_o you_o happy_o there_o be_v no_o disturbance_n in_o your_o conscience_n happy_o there_o be_v some_o kind_n of_o joy_n and_o rejoice_v in_o you_o in_o hear_v the_o word_n etc._n etc._n but_o my_o brethren_n whatever_o there_o be_v that_o can_v be_v in_o you_o if_o this_o be_v not_o in_o you_o if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o death_n of_o sin_n and_o a_o life_n of_o righteousness_n be_v it_o know_v unto_o you_o that_o christ_n be_v not_o in_o you_o neither_o be_v you_o in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n you_o may_v go_v on_o and_o please_v yourselves_o with_o dream_n of_o a_o happy_a estate_n because_o of_o such_o and_o such_o appearance_n of_o grace_n yet_o this_o i_o assure_v you_o if_o the_o death_n judgement_n of_o god_n at_o the_o last_o day_n for_o so_o as_o the_o word_n judge_v god_n judge_v and_o as_o the_o minister_n judge_v while_o he_o keep_v to_o the_o scripture_n the_o lord_n christ_n will_v judge_v at_o the_o last_o day_n so_o that_o you_o see_v here_o be_v comfort_n for_o some_o and_o terror_n for_o other_o comfort_n for_o such_o as_o have_v a_o death_n of_o sin_n and_o a_o life_n of_o righteousness_n though_o there_o be_v much_o corruption_n though_o there_o be_v much_o weakness_n of_o grace_n in_o you_o yet_o here_o be_v comfort_n for_o you_o and_o terror_n for_o all_o other_o whatever_o their_o moral_a virtue_n and_o common_a grace_n or_o their_o restrain_v gift_n or_o outward_a profession_n be_v well_o then_o what_o now_o remain_v but_o that_o in_o the_o last_o place_n we_o be_v all_o exhort_v from_o the_o lord_n to_o labour_v to_o increase_v the_o death_n of_o sin_n and_o life_n of_o righteousness_n in_o we_o they_o be_v but_o imperfect_a in_o the_o best_a of_o we_o let_v we_o labour_n to_o make_v they_o both_o more_o perfect_a to_o perfect_v the_o death_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n why_o so_o because_o that_o the_o death_n of_o sin_n and_o life_n of_o righteousness_n they_o be_v the_o evidence_n of_o christ_n be_v in_o we_o the_o evidence_n of_o the_o goodness_n of_o our_o estate_n therefore_o the_o more_o these_o be_v the_o more_o be_v our_o evidence_n of_o our_o part_n in_o christ_n and_o the_o great_a will_v our_o comfort_n be_v and_o we_o shall_v make_v more_o sure_a our_o call_n and_o election_n this_o be_v that_o brethren_n whether_o be_v better_a for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v enrich_v or_o glorify_v to_o hear_v a_o earthly_a parent_n that_o happy_o may_v give_v he_o a_o earthly_a patrimony_n or_o a_o heavenly_a father_n that_o assure_o will_v receive_v he_o to_o mercy_n in_o the_o end_n of_o this_o life_n think_v of_o these_o thing_n and_o withal_o know_v that_o the_o mean_n and_o help_n and_o support_v that_o we_o desire_v be_v not_o proper_o in_o the_o power_n of_o friend_n and_o acquaintance_n but_o it_o be_v god_n that_o bow_v the_o heart_n and_o enlarge_v the_o spirit_n of_o man_n whether_o friend_n or_o no_o to_o do_v we_o good_a i_o have_v know_v many_o a_o carnal_a man_n that_o have_v wicked_a friend_n have_v be_v enforce_v to_o bestow_v most_o upon_o those_o who_o life_n and_o and_o yet_o be_v dead_a rev._n 3.1_o many_o have_v a_o fancy_n of_o faith_n yet_o upon_o the_o trial_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o there_o be_v but_o few_o even_o of_o those_o that_o be_v interest_v in_o the_o title_n of_o christian_n and_o live_v in_o the_o bosom_n of_o the_o church_n that_o have_v any_o right_a or_o
go_v further_o and_o you_o shall_v see_v more_o than_o these_o cut_v off_o from_o be_v the_o son_n of_o abraham_n and_o sure_o if_o abraham_n shall_v come_v down_o from_o heaven_n he_o may_v abraham_n and_o these_o man_n abraham_n forsake_v his_o good_n and_o all_o but_o your_o close-hearted_n hypocrite_n have_v always_o some_o god_n or_o other_o that_o they_o do_v homage_n to_o their_o ease_n or_o their_o wealth_n or_o some_o secret_a lust_n something_o or_o other_o they_o have_v set_v up_o as_o a_o i_o doll_n within_o they_o and_o so_o long_o as_o they_o may_v have_v and_o enjoy_v that_o they_o will_v part_v with_o any_o thing_n else_o but_o thou_o must_v know_v that_o if_o thou_o be_v one_o of_o abraham_n child_n thou_o must_v come_v away_o from_o thy_o god_n thy_o god_n of_o pride_n of_o self-love_n of_o vainglory_n and_o leave_v worship_v of_o these_o and_o be_v content_a to_o be_v govern_v alone_o by_o god_n and_o his_o truth_n this_o shall_v suffice_v for_o the_o
