provide_v for_o thou_o that_o thou_o need_v not_o ask_v what_o thou_o may_v not_o lawful_o ask_v for_o he_o who_o charge_n it_o be_v to_o look_v to_o the_o whole_a house_n will_v provide_v necessary_n for_o all_o as_o it_o become_v the_o superior_a to_o the_o intent_n they_o may_v more_o free_o serve_v god_n and_o attend_v their_o spiritual_a meditation_n neither_o shall_v there_o be_v need_n that_o any_o ask_v or_o crave_v such_o thing_n as_o be_v necessary_a for_o they_o and_o it_o shall_v be_v no_o little_a fault_n in_o the_o superior_a to_o want_v that_o discretion_n as_o not_o to_o give_v thing_n necessary_a for_o those_o under_o his_o charge_n except_o they_o demand_v they_o therefore_o that_o which_o i_o say_v of_o ask_v or_o demand_v aught_o to_o be_v double_o understand_v that_o without_o offend_v one_o may_v ask_v if_o such_o thing_n as_o shall_v be_v necessary_a be_v not_o give_v without_o ask_v which_o thing_n may_v just_o be_v reprehend_v especial_o in_o religious_a person_n and_o if_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n of_o great_a necessity_n and_o not_o rather_o to_o satisfy_v our_o contentement_n for_o in_o ask_v otherwise_o it_o may_v proceed_v from_o or_o grief_n in_o forbear_v it_o provide_v still_o thou_o exceed_v not_o the_o bound_n of_o discretion_n in_o this_o case_n not_o to_o ask_v althopugh_o that_o which_o thou_o ask_v be_v some_o what_o needful_a it_o shall_v be_v a_o great_a merit_n to_o thou_o &_o a_o token_n of_o thy_o virtue_n although_o without_o offend_v thou_o may_v ask_v as_o i_o have_v say_v for_o happy_a in_o my_o opinion_n be_v the_o man_n that_o suffer_v any_o thing_n for_o the_o love_n of_o god_n but_o if_o that_o which_o thou_o will_v ask_v be_v but_o such_o a_o thing_n which_o without_o hurt_n of_o thy_o body_n or_o soul_n thou_o may_v easy_o miss_v thou_o may_v think_v then_o that_o to_o ask_v be_v but_o to_o satisfy_v thy_o mind_n and_o pleasure_n although_o it_o be_v cover_v with_o a_o pretext_n of_o some_o to_o collect_v himself_o and_o to_o turn_v to_o god_n now_o when_o this_o herb_n to_o think_v be_v water_v with_o the_o water_n call_v to_o see_n we_o must_v then_o add_v to_o these_o holy_a purpose_v a_o certain_a powder_n that_o be_v call_v strict_a guard_n of_o our_o eye_n for_o this_o be_v most_o necessary_a these_o three_o purpose_n do_v not_o only_o purge_v and_o make_v clean_a my_o soul_n from_o all_o worldly_a affares_fw-la from_o all_o self-will_n and_o from_o all_o spot_n and_o stain_v but_o beside_o that_o i_o may_v with_o great_a zeal_n serve_v my_o lord_n god_n procure_v i_o great_a purity_n of_o hart_n &_o rid_v i_o of_o all_o private_a affection_n and_o love_n and_o join_v and_o unite_v i_o whole_o to_o my_o lord_n god_n and_o saviour_n and_o to_o these_o three_o purpose_n i_o have_v reduce_v all_o my_o other_o spiritual_a exercise_n as_o well_o those_o which_o be_v appertain_v to_o humility_n as_o such_o as_o be_v agreeable_a to_o all_o other_o virtue_n because_o i_o know_v perfection_n to_o consist_v in_o they_o and_o suffer_v not_o thyself_o to_o be_v persuade_v that_o in_o vain_a i_o yield_v obedience_n to_o these_o three_o virgin_n for_o i_o find_v their_o favour_n and_o goodness_n great_a towards_o i_o who_o plentiful_o bestow_v on_o i_o all_o kind_n of_o goodness_n the_o one_o of_o they_o call_v poverty_n have_v late_o bestow_v on_o i_o a_o rich_a ornament_n de._n i_o desire_v to_o see_v it_o where_o do_v you_o keep_v it_o love_n etc._n etc._n i_o keep_v it_o in_o two_o place_n in_o my_o hart_n and_o in_o my_o chamber_n and_o it_o affection_n and_o desire_v neither_o can_v it_o possible_o be_v contain_v in_o my_o chamber_n until_o i_o have_v cast_v thence_o all_o superfluous_a thing_n reserve_v only_o the_o crucifix_n and_o some_o few_o other_o book_n de._n what_o be_v the_o name_n of_o this_o ornament_n it_o be_v call_v nothing_o at_o all_o and_o it_o be_v the_o especial_a and_o chief_a treasure_n of_o poverty_n who_o be_v the_o rich_a lady_n of_o all_o the_o world_n and_o who_o possess_v so_o much_o treasure_n as_o here selfe_o do_v desire_v chapter_n 6._o of_o the_o office_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o world_n be_v in_o his_o hand_n i_o far_o meditate_v with_o myself_o how_o he_o be_v whole_o and_o all_o good_a &_o the_o chief_a high_a &_o pure_a goodness_n itself_o which_o contemplate_v right_o i_o oft_o tremble_v in_o hart_n fear_n &_o almost_o faint_a especial_o behold_v myself_o so_o wicked_a so_o vile_a so_o abominable_a and_o so_o filthy_a a_o sinner_n to_o presume_v to_o speak_v to_o a_o a_o ready_a will_n and_o most_o joyful_o perform_v what_o i_o be_o bind_v to_o do_v then_o that_o i_o may_v crave_v something_o of_o he_o and_o may_v move_v he_o to_o grant_v it_o i_o i_o endeavour_n he_o shall_v command_v i_o de._n yet_o i_o think_v it_o very_o necessary_a sometime_o to_o be_v busy_v in_o read_v good_a book_n love_n etc._n etc._n true_a it_o be_v it_o be_v good_a to_o spend_v some_o time_n in_o read_v but_o not_o with_o a_o mind_n to_o become_v learned_a and_o skilful_a but_o that_o thereby_o thou_o may_v find_v out_o god_n and_o his_o way_n and_o once_o have_v find_v he_o book_n that_o the_o whole_a world_n do_v possess_v and_o i_o obtain_v great_a purity_n of_o soul_n fear_n devotion_n reverence_n compunction_n fortitude_n and_o strength_n and_o severity_n against_o the_o flesh_n by_o be_v in_o his_o presence_n then_o by_o read_v continual_o beside_o i_o know_v for_o certain_a he_o never_o will_v ask_v account_n how_o much_o i_o have_v read_v but_o how_o much_o i_o have_v love_v and_o esteem_v he_o neither_o will_v i_o altogether_o exclude_v or_o banish_v read_v especial_o for_o such_o as_o be_v yet_o simple_a and_o ignorant_a and_o know_v not_o how_o to_o judge_v of_o their_o thought_n word_n and_o work_n for_o to_o such_o it_o be_v requisite_a to_o spend_v much_o time_n in_o read_v &_o to_o learn_v the_o exercise_n of_o the_o spirit_n &_o mind_n for_o as_o it_o will_v be_v think_v great_a folly_n rashness_n and_o disgrace_n to_o a_o prince_n if_o a_o rude_a country_n fellow_n not_o accustom_v to_o speak_v to_o a_o king_n shall_v presume_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o all_o his_o nobility_n to_o come_v and_o bold_o speak_v his_o mind_n and_o if_o in_o speak_v he_o shall_v use_v his_o accustom_a rustical_a and_o undecent_a term_n it_o can_v not_o but_o be_v think_v so_o great_a a_o disgrace_n to_o the_o prince_n that_o he_o just_o may_v command_v he_o to_o be_v thrust_v out_o from_o his_o presence_n and_o far_o better_a have_v it_o be_v he_o have_v never_o presume_v thither_o even_o so_o stand_v the_o case_n in_o spiritual_a case_n but_o to_o those_o that_o by_o read_v and_o hear_v have_v already_o attain_a to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o divine_a exercise_n to_o such_o the_o exercise_n of_o pray_v be_v more_o necessary_a than_o read_v as_o be_v already_o expert_a how_o to_o behave_v themselves_o in_o the_o spiritual_a court_n farther_n when_o i_o present_v myself_o before_o my_o lord_n and_o master_n i_o be_o very_o careful_a that_o inconstant_o i_o turn_v not_o my_o head_n or_o eye_n hither_o or_o thither_o for_o it_o will_v be_v take_v a_o great_a dishonour_n to_o he_o to_o look_v a_o other_o way_n while_o on_o shall_v talk_v with_o he_o de._n tell_v i_o your_o meaning_n more_o plain_o for_o as_o yet_o i_o understand_v not_o love_n when_o i_o speak_v to_o my_o master_n if_o at_o such_o time_n i_o busy_a my_o thought_n and_o reason_n upon_o any_o thing_n but_o only_o upon_o he_o i_o speak_v to_o then_o turn_v i_o my_o back_n not_o my_o face_n to_o he_o for_o this_o cause_n when_o i_o persuade_v myself_o that_o i_o be_o present_a before_o he_o in_o sight_n and_o that_o he_o do_v behold_v i_o and_o never_o turn_v his_o eye_n from_o i_o but_o mark_v what_o i_o say_v i_o use_v all_o reverence_n devotion_n love_n and_o attention_n to_o he_o that_o i_o can_v then_o do_v i_o praise_v and_o thank_v often_o to_o my_o mind_n and_o rehearse_v they_o be_v most_o certain_a that_o he_o will_v not_o have_v i_o in-grate_n and_o unmindful_a of_o his_o gift_n chapter_n 8._o of_o the_o three_o degree_n over_o all_o the_o world_n clothe_v with_o this_o garment_n &_o a_o little_a travel_v scrip_n he_o enter_v also_o into_o this_o desert_n to_o seek_v out_o his_o sheep_n that_o be_v wander_v and_o stray_v and_o as_o he_o travail_v through_o this_o desert_n the_o father_n permit_v that_o he_o shall_v be_v kill_v of_o wolf_n and_o devour_v of_o dog_n and_o will_v give_v he_o no_o help_n although_o he_o can_v but_o will_v have_v he_o endure_v a_o most_o cruel_a death_n by_o these_o wolf_n more_o painful_a to_o he_o than_o ever_o any_o sffer_v be_v his_o flesh_n most_o tender_a in_o that_o he_o weas_z the_o son_n of_o a_o king_n all_o this_o do_v our_o lord_n of_o his_o exceed_a love_n towards_o we_o that_o all_o we_o that_o dwell_v and_o abide_v in_o his_o house_n may_v know_v and_o try_v his_o charity_n and_o thereby_o may_v love_v he_o again_o consider_v that_o first_o he_o love_v we_o so_o great_o that_o he_o spare_v not_o his_o one_o only_a son_n but_o deliver_v he_o for_o we_o all_o be_v overcome_v with_o to_o great_a a_o love_n towards_o us._n for_o i_o be_o of_o this_o opinion_n that_o except_o we_o be_v spare_v for_o his_o sake_n long_o since_o have_v we_o be_v drive_v clean_o out_o of_o this_o monastery_n so_o wicked_a and_o miserable_a we_o be_v and_o so_o negligent_o and_o sloathful_o we_o serve_v he_o whole_o forget_v he_o and_o contemn_v he_o and_o so_o little_a care_n and_o remembrance_n we_o have_v of_o he_o but_o the_o omnipotent_a father_n love_v this_o son_n so_o great_o that_o in_o my_o opinion_n nothing_o can_v be_v more_o acceptable_a to_o he_o in_o this_o world_n then_o that_o we_o shall_v love_v this_o his_o son_n with_o he_o for_o which_o cause_n i_o endeavour_n &_o labour_n to_o love_v he_o &_o to_o do_v those_o thing_n which_o i_o think_v please_v to_o he_o de._n what_o be_v it_o that_o you_o can_v do_v acceptable_a to_o he_o love_n &c_n &c_n in_o remember_v and_o speak_v of_o his_o most_o holy_a life_n his_o pain_n &_o labour_n his_o most_o bitter_a death_n and_o passion_n &_o his_o holy_a commandment_n and_o as_o near_o as_o i_o can_v conformity_n myself_o according_a to_o his_o manner_n for_o who_o soever_o my_o lord_n &_o master_n see_v most_o careful_o to_o imitate_v the_o life_n of_o his_o son_n he_o do_v he_o most_o love_n and_o hold_v dear_a to_o he_o and_o for_o this_o cause_n be_v it_o his_o holy_a will_n and_o pleasure_n that_o he_o shall_v come_v &_o live_v here_o among_o we_o that_o by_o that_o mean_v he_o may_v teach_v we_o how_o we_o shall_v live_v who_o before_o live_v no_o better_a than_o bruit_n beast_n therefore_o have_v our_o ord_n set_v he_o before_o our_o eye_n as_o a_o mirror_n or_o look_v glass_n that_o every_o one_o may_v know_v whether_o he_o do_v or_o omit_v what_o his_o pleasure_n be_v and_o may_v see_v and_o behold_v in_o the_o life_n of_o his_o son_n as_o in_o a_o glass_n whether_o his_o work_n be_v good_a or_o bad_a neither_o be_v there_o any_o thing_n in_o all_o the_o world_n by_o which_o we_o may_v more_o true_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n thereof_o and_o yet_o beside_o this_o there_o be_v one_o thing_n more_o which_o my_o lord_n and_o m._n love_v that_o be_v my_o boy_n call_v the_o love_n of_o our_o neighbour_n who_o he_o esteem_v so_o much_o and_o hold_v so_o dear_a that_o whatsoever_o we_o do_v to_o he_o be_v it_o good_a or_o bad_a he_o take_v as_o if_o it_o be_v do_v to_o himself_o de._n how_o do_v you_o love_v this_o boy_n love_n etc._n etc._n even_o as_o myself_o and_o first_o i_o persuade_v myself_o that_o he_o be_v better_a than_o i_o be_o master_n be_v better_o belove_v of_o he_o then_o of_o myself_o and_o that_o it_o will_v please_v god_n to_o make_v he_o as_o good_a or_o better_a than_o i_o myself_o be_o i_o envy_v he_o nothing_o either_o for_o corporal_a or_o spiritual_a gift_n bestow_v on_o he_o by_o god_n or_o for_o any_o thing_n which_o he_o enjoy_v in_o this_o world_n but_o rejoice_v in_o his_o prosperity_n and_o lament_v in_o his_o adversity_n far_o i_o think_v he_o to_o be_v the_o angel_n of_o god_n and_o myself_o to_o be_v unworthy_a to_o be_v his_o servant_n this_o do_v i_o for_o that_o i_o know_v he_o to_o be_v belove_v of_o my_o master_n also_o i_o love_v those_o thing_n which_o appertain_v to_o our_o society_n towards_o which_o i_o carry_v a_o very_a great_a zeal_n in_o regard_n that_o they_o appertain_v to_o the_o worship_n &_o honour_n of_o
my_o lord_n and_o master_n and_o to_o the_o preservation_n and_o maintenance_n of_o this_o his_o house_n wherefore_o i_o be_o very_o careful_a that_o nothing_o be_v lose_v or_o mislay_v especial_o of_o those_o thing_n which_o belong_v to_o the_o service_n of_o religion_n ceremony_n and_o the_o holy_a canon_n of_o the_o church_n which_o thing_n although_o many_o do_v not_o great_o esteem_v yet_o i_o be_o full_o persuade_v that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n will_v never_o have_v institute_v they_o except_o he_o have_v know_v they_o to_o be_v please_v to_o god_n therefore_o i_o hold_v the_o small_a ceremony_n to_o be_v observe_v imagine_v they_o tend_v to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n and_o most_o readely_a and_o willing_o with_o all_o humility_n &_o reverence_n do_v i_o keep_v they_o and_o this_o in_o his_o service_n who_o shall_v do_v it_o consider_v i_o be_o behold_v to_o he_o more_o than_o all_o other_o creature_n for_o if_o the_o servant_n and_o attendant_n of_o great_a prince_n and_o state_n serve_v and_o obey_v their_o master_n so_o careful_o diligent_o and_o with_o so_o great_a a_o desire_n why_o shall_v not_o i_o serve_v and_o honour_v my_o master_n and_o lord_n that_o admit_v i_o to_o the_o familiarity_n of_o his_o chamber_n therefore_o if_o the_o whole_a world_n shall_v fall_v and_o decline_v from_o his_o obedience_n and_o not_o one_o shall_v persevere_v to_o show_v he_o weight_n they_o any_o purpose_n i_o can_v undertake_v therefore_o have_v i_o beseech_v the_o superior_a of_o this_o monastery_n that_o he_o never_o send_v i_o abroad_o into_o twine_a or_o country_n for_o my_o recreation_n or_o disport_v which_o be_v a_o thing_n different_a from_o my_o disposition_n &_o which_o i_o hate_v yet_o when_o he_o command_v it_o i_o must_v needs_o obey_v he_o and_o although_o for_o some_o cause_v my_o m._n command_v i_o sometime_o to_o go_v abroad_o into_o the_o world_n yet_o will_v he_o that_o i_o return_v with_o all_o the_o speed_n that_o i_o can_v make_v for_o fear_v lest_o i_o be_v catch_v and_o deceive_v with_o the_o deceit_n thereof_o be_v assure_v that_o how_o wary_o soever_o man_n converse_v therein_o yet_o more_o hurt_n than_o good_a come_v ever_o thereby_o likewise_o do_v i_o detest_v &_o hate_v my_o own_o fault_n and_o uncleanes_n my_o ill_a motion_n &_o desire_n my_o sudden_a passion_n &_o promise_n to_o sin_n not_o ignorant_a how_o think_v they_o unworthy_a of_o my_o company_n &_o fellowship_n for_o as_o i_o say_v before_o i_o esteem_v they_o as_o saint_n and_o angel_n but_o rather_o because_o i_o think_v myself_o unworthy_a of_o their_o presence_n and_o conversation_n or_o meet_v to_o kiss_v the_o ground_n that_o they_o tread_v on_o de._n why_o do_v you_o so_o lo_o because_o in_o these_o time_n religion_n be_v much_o decay_v by_o reason_n of_o to_o much_o familiarity_n and_o converse_v of_o such_o as_o profess_v monastical_a life_n not_o only_o among_o themselves_o but_o also_o among_o secular_a person_n whereby_o it_o chance_v that_o so_o little_a prayer_n devotion_n and_o meditation_n be_v use_v for_o in_o these_o day_n some_o monastery_n be_v become_v like_o prince_n palace_n and_o only_o in_o name_n &_o habit_n they_o show_v themselves_o religious_a when_o they_o treat_v of_o and_o handle_v naught_o but_o worldy_a cause_n &_o holiness_n &_o religion_n be_v so_o rare_a among_o some_o of_o they_o that_o they_o never_o frequent_v their_o devotion_n but_o when_o they_o meet_v in_o their_o oratory_n out_o of_o which_o they_o talk_v of_o nothing_o but_o worldy_a business_n and_o news_n be_v always_o so_o distract_v that_o they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o collect_v their_o mind_n to_o serve_v god_n and_o when_o they_o be_v call_v against_o their_o will_n to_o their_o oratory_n to_o sing_v their_o service_n they_o fear_v they_o shall_v not_o soon_o enough_o depart_v from_o thence_o again_o &_o thus_o they_o sing_v their_o service_n be_v full_a of_o high_a mystery_n with_o little_a reverence_n or_o no_o devotion_n at_o all_o have_v their_o mind_n &_o desire_n on_o the_o end_n &_o in_o the_o kitchen_n and_o because_o they_o understand_v little_a of_o god_n or_o what_o appertain_v to_o he_o god_n likewise_o regard_v they_o not_o but_o hate_v they_o therefore_o have_v i_o determine_v to_o inure_v myself_o to_o a_o custom_n and_o to_o endeavour_n to_o be_v always_o solitary_a and_o attend_v my_o devotion_n that_o so_o my_o mind_n may_v take_v delight_n in_o god_n and_o those_o thing_n that_o appertain_v to_o he_o and_o that_o i_o may_v learn_v to_o love_v he_o as_o in_o truth_n it_o be_v most_o requisite_a consider_v that_o for_o that_o cause_n i_o have_v forsake_v the_o world_n &_o withdraw_v myself_o hither_o de._n some_o will_v say_v thou_o be_v singular_a &_o sometime_o to_o his_o master_n with_o how_o many_o wrong_n and_o injury_n he_o have_v offend_v he_o how_o ill_a and_o unreverent_o he_o have_v sometime_o speak_v of_o he_o with_o the_o remembrance_n four_o word_n our_o lo_o thou_o may_v refer_v all_o thy_o exercise_n to_o these_o four_o word_n for_o they_o be_v of_o great_a importace_n &_o whole_a volume_n may_v be_v write_v of_o they_o alone_o which_o of_o they_o self_n be_v sufficient_a to_o teach_v great_a perfection_n therefore_o when_o thou_o esolue_v to_o speak_v unto_o i_o if_o then_o thou_o find_v thyself_o can_v distract_v or_o discontent_v for_o any_o thing_n that_o thou_o be_v command_v think_v to_o thyself_o that_o with_o these_o word_n alone_o i_o speak_v to_o thou_o i_o &_o thou_o and_o then_o exclude_v from_o thy_o mind_n the_o whole_a world_n &_o what_o soever_o thou_o have_v hear_v or_o see_v in_o thy_o life_n imagine_v that_o none_o but_o i_o ay_o thou_o be_v leave_v in_o this_o world_n the_o other_o two_o
