every_o mystery_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o we_o must_v leave_v some_o thing_n to_o learn_v when_o we_o come_v to_o heaven_n second_o in_o respect_n of_o experience_n how_o many_o thing_n be_v there_o which_o we_o get_v in_o notion_n which_o we_o be_v content_a withal_o and_o seek_v not_o for_o the_o experience_n of_o it_o this_o require_v much_o time_n to_o seek_v after_o the_o experience_n and_o power_n and_o conformity_n to_o those_o truth_n of_o which_o we_o be_v convict_v in_o our_o judgement_n thou_o may_v learn_v many_o thing_n in_o a_o notional_a way_n in_o a_o short_a time_n but_o experience_n of_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v not_o so_o soon_o obtain_v the_o physician_n read_v many_o thing_n and_o they_o seem_v rational_a to_o he_o but_o this_o seem_v not_o enough_o to_o he_o until_o he_o get_v some_o experience_n of_o these_o thing_n till_o he_o have_v make_v trial_n of_o they_o it_o will_v require_v much_o time_n for_o thou_o to_o put_v every_o truth_n so_o to_o the_o touchstone_n as_o to_o be_v able_a to_o speak_v to_o it_o from_o thy_o own_o experimental_a knowledge_n and_o this_o will_v advise_v thou_o to_o begin_v betimes_o with_o the_o lord_n three_o in_o regard_n of_o employment_n o_o when_o thou_o come_v into_o christ_n thou_o will_v find_v abundance_n of_o work_n to_o do_v too_o much_o for_o the_o little_a time_n that_o be_v allot_v thou_o if_o see_v not_o the_o excellency_n that_o be_v in_o they_o thus_o the_o will_n blind_v the_o understanding_n and_o that_o lead_v the_o will_v aside_o and_o so_o the_o blind_a lead_v the_o blind_a till_o both_o fall_n into_o the_o dâ—tch_n thus_o we_o see_v daily_o by_o sad_a experience_n how_o man_n passion_n or_o interest_n do_v blind_a they_o that_o they_o do_v not_o see_v thing_n as_o they_o be_v man_n love_v or_o hate_v thing_n and_o then_o they_o judge_v they_o to_o be_v good_a or_o evil_n according_a to_o their_o affection_n the_o natural_a man_n hate_v the_o way_n of_o godliness_n and_o receive_v they_o again_o he_o love_v his_o lust_n and_o therefore_o he_o fancy_n that_o they_o be_v comely_a and_o pleasant_a he_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o see_v the_o deformity_n of_o sin_n like_o some_o fond_a mother_n who_o do_v ate_n so_o much_o upon_o her_o child_n that_o she_o will_v hear_v no_o evil_a of_o it_o she_o be_v so_o blind_v by_o affection_n that_o she_o can_v see_v fault_n the_o air_n they_o fulfil_v the_o will_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o their_o own_o at_o once_o and_o indeed_o natural_a man_n do_v incline_v to_o evil_a as_o he_o do_v only_o their_o will_n be_v changeable_a and_o may_v bow_v towards_o god_n but_o his_o be_v unchangable_o fix_v on_o evil_n so_o that_o by_o this_o it_o appear_v the_o natural_a man_n have_v no_o such_o freedom_n or_o liberty_n of_o will_n as_o as_o be_v mention_v god_n have_v leave_v it_o free_a but_o his_o own_o corruption_n have_v not_o leave_v it_o indifferent_a to_o good_a or_o evil_n but_o strong_o incline_v it_o to_o the_o latter_a and_o if_o the_o natural_a man_n stand_v in_o such_o a_o indifferency_n to_o good_a or_o evil_n it_o be_v very_o strange_a that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v speak_v so_o of_o the_o whole_a lump_n of_o mankind_n rom._n 3.10_o 11_o 12._o there_o be_v none_o that_o seek_v after_o god_n there_o be_v none_o that_o do_v good_a no_o not_o one_o it_o be_v strange_a that_o none_o shall_v choose_v the_o right_a way_n if_o they_o stand_v all_o indifferent_a three_o we_o see_v the_o renew_a man_n stand_v not_o in_o such_o a_o indifferency_n for_o grace_v which_o do_v not_o destroy_v in_o his_o fall_v and_o in_o his_o renew_a state_n have_v liberty_n in_o their_o will_n yet_o none_o of_o they_o have_v that_o liberty_n which_o consist_v in_o a_o indifferency_n to_o good_a or_o evil_n first_o for_o adam_n in_o innocency_n have_v liberty_n to_o choose_v good_a or_o evil_n but_o he_o be_v dispose_v and_o incline_v to_o good_a eccles_n 7.29_o god_n make_v man_n upright_o second_o man_n fall_v choose_v evil_a rather_o then_o good_a gen._n 6.5_o the_o thought_n of_o his_o heart_n be_v evil_a only_o evil_a and_o that_o continual_o three_o man_n in_o his_o renew_a state_n do_v god_n go_v so_o far_o as_o have_v be_v hint_v to_o make_v a_o day_n of_o grace_n for_o they_o that_o perish_v and_o have_v they_o all_o outward_a help_n in_o common_a with_o they_o who_o be_v save_v and_o have_v they_o so_o many_o inward_a help_n as_o have_v be_v mention_v qu._n wherein_o do_v the_o work_n of_o god_n upon_o his_o elect_n differ_v from_o his_o working_n upon_o these_o whilst_o their_o day_n continue_v ans_fw-fr the_o difference_n lie_v principal_o in_o this_o that_o all_o the_o moving_n and_o working_n of_o god_n upon_o wicked_a man_n be_v not_o upon_o their_o will_n to_o bring_v they_o over_o to_o himself_o but_o they_o be_v upon_o their_o understanding_n their_o conscience_n and_o sometime_o upon_o some_o of_o their_o affection_n but_o the_o principal_a work_n of_o god_n upon_o his_o elect_n be_v upon_o their_o will_n they_o come_v over_o first_o and_o fast_o unto_o god_n the_o lord_n go_v thus_o far_o with_o those_o who_o he_o convert_v not_o wâ—l_o say_v he_o i_o will_v prove_v you_o by_o illumination_n i_o will_v show_v you_o many_o of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o you_o shall_v see_v what_o belong_v to_o your_o peace_n so_o far_o that_o thy_o judgement_n shall_v be_v for_o heaven_n nay_o i_o will_v shake_v conscience_n also_o and_o that_o shall_v rise_v against_o thou_o by_o way_n of_o conviction_n thou_o shall_v see_v the_o danger_n of_o thy_o estate_n in_o this_o condition_n and_o i_o will_v break_v in_o upon_o thy_o affection_n thou_o shall_v find_v not_o only_o fear_n of_o hell_n and_o wrath_n to_o solicit_v thy_o return_n but_o also_o some_o joy_n in_o comply_v with_o my_o word_n and_o way_n but_o as_o for_o thy_o will_n i_o will_v leave_v that_o to_o its_o freedom_n let_v it_o choose_v what_o please_v it_o best_o now_o let_v it_o take_v life_n or_o death_n they_o be_v both_o before_o it_o and_o now_o if_o the_o will_n be_v indifferent_a when_o judgement_n and_o conscience_n and_o some_o of_o its_o affection_n be_v for_o believe_v and_o repent_v it_o will_v sure_o strike_v in_o and_o all_o these_o will_v engage_v and_o bring_v it_o over_o to_o christ_n but_o notwithstanding_o all_o this_o the_o will_n fall_v back_o and_o choose_v vanity_n and_o sin_n which_o please_v it_o best_o because_o of_o the_o corruption_n which_o be_v in_o it_o so_o that_o while_o corruption_n remain_v in_o the_o will_n it_o spew_v out_o this_o knowledge_n and_o these_o conviction_n and_o run_v on_o to_o folly_n which_o it_o have_v choose_v rom._n 1.28_o they_o do_v not_o like_a to_o retain_v the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n in_o their_o heart_n whatever_o come_v in_o to_o check_v the_o soul_n in_o the_o way_n of_o sin_n be_v a_o unwelcome_a guest_n so_o long_o as_o the_o will_n remain_v corrupt_v and_o taint_v and_o the_o will_n cast_v but_o the_o light_n of_o the_o understanding_n and_o the_o conviction_n of_o conscience_n as_o the_o mariner_n do_v pump_v out_o the_o water_n which_o break_v in_o upon_o they_o balaam_n have_v a_o clear_a knowledge_n of_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o saint_n but_o his_o will_n be_v for_o covetousness_n felix_n have_v a_o clear_a conviction_n of_o judgement_n to_o come_v but_o his_o will_n be_v for_o his_o corruption_n and_o therefore_o he_o resolve_v to_o stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o conscience_n by_o send_v paul_n away_o the_o will_n deal_v with_o the_o light_n of_o truth_n as_o the_o sore_a eye_n deal_v with_o the_o sun_n shut_v the_o window_n to_o keep_v it_o out_o because_o it_o offend_v john_n 3.17_o man_n love_v darkness_n rather_o than_o light_n
for_o god_n with_o another_o day_n wherein_o thou_o have_v be_v cold_a and_o dead_a and_o formal_a and_o careless_a of_o thy_o heart_n and_o forgetful_a of_o god_n and_o weigh_v the_o fruit_n of_o these_o two_o day_n walk_v together_o and_o see_v whether_o there_o be_v not_o a_o vast_a difference_n betwixt_o these_o what_o joy_n and_o rejoice_v be_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o thy_o thought_n all_o thy_o affection_n will_v be_v weaken_v especial_o those_o which_o shall_v most_v of_o all_o render_v thou_o serviceable_a to_o god_n 2_o thy_o affection_n of_o love_n and_o joy_n and_o zeal_n be_v the_o very_a hand_n that_o lay_v hold_v on_o christ_n and_o the_o foot_n that_o run_v after_o he_o and_o the_o instrument_n with_o which_o we_o work_v for_o he_o lose_v not_o this_o time_n if_o ever_o thou_o will_v take_v a_o time_n wherein_o god_n may_v be_v glorify_v by_o thou_o second_o now_o all_o thy_o sense_n be_v fresh_a and_o quick_a and_o thy_o soul_n most_o active_a and_o thou_o be_v best_a able_a to_o taste_v of_o that_o sweetness_n which_o be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o although_o the_o sweetness_n of_o the_o way_n of_o god_n do_v not_o consist_v in_o satisfy_v the_o sense_n external_a neither_o be_v godliness_n as_o the_o familist_n make_v it_o a_o sensual_a life_n yet_o when_o the_o body_n be_v decay_v and_o the_o soul_n weaken_v as_o to_o all_o its_o exercise_n the_o soul_n be_v not_o deprive_v only_o of_o the_o relish_n which_o it_o have_v of_o carnal_a thing_n but_o even_o of_o spiritual_a one_o also_o the_o reason_n why_o we_o shall_v enjoy_v so_o much_o more_o of_o god_n in_o heaven_n than_o we_o do_v or_o can_v do_v here_o be_v because_o our_o body_n shall_v be_v fit_v to_o our_o soul_n we_o shall_v have_v none_o of_o the_o encumbrance_n of_o flesh_n and_o weakness_n and_o indisposition_n through_o sickness_n and_o old_a age_n which_o now_o do_v hinder_v we_o and_o therefore_o it_o must_v needs_o follow_v that_o the_o better_a the_o soul_n be_v organise_v and_o fit_v for_o action_n through_o the_o strength_n and_o vigour_n of_o all_o the_o faculty_n the_o more_o capable_a it_o be_v of_o communion_n with_o god_n and_o of_o taste_v the_o sweetness_n that_o be_v in_o his_o way_n bring_v a_o man_n that_o be_v sick_a and_o weak_a never_o such_o precious_a and_o please_a meat_n and_o drink_n he_o affect_v they_o not_o because_o his_o palate_n be_v weak_a and_o he_o can_v taste_v the_o sweetness_n that_o be_v in_o they_o old_a age_n be_v the_o sickness_n of_o nature_n then_o she_o begin_v to_o be_v feeble_a and_o it_o can_v be_v expect_v that_o the_o soul_n can_v act_v at_o the_o same_o rate_n either_o in_o natural_n or_o spiritual_n which_o it_o do_v when_o it_o be_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o its_o strength_n a_o man_n can_v do_v so_o much_o work_v when_o his_o assistant_n and_o servant_n be_v all_o go_v from_o he_o as_o he_o can_v when_o he_o have_v they_o all_o at_o command_n the_o soul_n want_v many_o of_o her_o attendant_n they_o be_v dead_a or_o drowsy_a and_o very_o useless_a every_o member_n of_o the_o body_n and_o every_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v very_o weak_a and_o lame_a and_o there_o be_v little_o expect_v from_o they_o if_o ever_o thou_o will_v high_o put_v a_o difference_n between_o the_o way_n of_o god_n and_o the_o way_n of_o sin_n and_o thou_o will_v relish_v the_o sweetness_n that_o be_v in_o follow_v the_o lord_n jesus_n make_v trial_n in_o thy_o youth_n whilst_o thou_o be_v in_o the_o prime_n of_o thy_o strength_n for_o the_o breast_n of_o his_o consolation_n be_v full_a and_o require_v much_o strength_n to_o draw_v they_o they_o be_v of_o so_o pure_a and_o spiritual_a a_o nature_n if_o thy_o sense_n be_v so_o quick_a and_o comprehensive_a as_o adam_n be_v in_o innocency_n yet_o there_o be_v more_o then_o enough_o in_o the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o in_o his_o way_n to_o exercise_v they_o and_o to_o satisfy_v they_o david_n speak_v large_o of_o his_o experience_n in_o this_o thing_n ps_n 19_o they_o be_v sweet_a than_o the_o honey_n and_o the_o honeycomb_n and_o in_o psalm_n one_o hundred_o and_o nineteen_o he_o commend_v they_o beyond_o all_o other_o good_a thing_n and_o speak_v elsewhere_o of_o this_o he_o set_v out_o the_o fullness_n and_o variety_n of_o sweetness_n which_o the_o way_n of_o god_n afford_v by_o this_o expression_n river_n of_o pleasure_n psalm_n 36.8_o they_o shall_v be_v abundant_o satisfy_v with_o the_o fatness_n of_o thy_o house_n and_o thou_o shall_v make_v they_o drink_v of_o the_o river_n of_o thy_o pleasure_n we_o may_v have_v another_o much_o like_a to_o this_o psalm_n 16.11_o in_o thy_o presence_n be_v fullness_n of_o joy_n at_o thy_o right_a hand_n there_o be_v pleasure_n for_o evermore_o o_o what_o a_o great_a mistake_n be_v there_o among_o many_o who_o refuse_v to_o give_v their_o youth_n to_o the_o lord_n because_o they_o can_v spare_v that_o from_o their_o pleasure_n they_o think_v that_o the_o devote_v that_o unto_o the_o lord_n will_v be_v the_o spoil_n of_o it_o let_v not_o saten_v delude_v any_o of_o your_o poor_a soul_n thus_o any_o more_o there_o be_v pleasure_n at_o god_n right_a hand_n and_o river_n of_o pleasure_n for_o soul_n to_o drink_v of_o who_o follow_v jesus_n christ_n when_o the_o summer_n brook_v which_o satan_n lead_v you_o to_o will_v all_o be_v dry_v up_o le_fw-fr he_o not_o draw_v you_o off_o from_o god_n with_o a_o pretence_n that_o there_o be_v no_o pleasure_n to_o be_v have_v in_o he_o but_o whenever_o he_o draw_v you_o after_o pleasure_n tell_v he_o how_o that_o you_o have_v hear_v that_o the_o wâ—y_n of_o god_n be_v sweet_a and_o that_o you_o will_v make_v trial_n of_o they_o whether_o they_o be_v so_o or_o not_o whilst_o you_o be_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o your_o strength_n and_o best_a able_a to_o distinguish_v betwixt_o sweet_a and_o bitter_a good_a and_o evil_a and_o when_o thou_o have_v get_v but_o a_o taste_n of_o the_o sweetness_n of_o the_o way_n of_o god_n thou_o will_v have_v a_o answer_n at_o hand_n for_o he_o when_o he_o come_v and_o tell_v thou_o thy_o youth_n be_v fit_a for_o pleasure_n tell_v he_o then_o it_o be_v fit_a for_o god_n at_o who_o right_a hand_n be_v pleasure_n everlasting_a which_o thou_o will_v never_o more_o exchange_v for_o his_o deceivable_a lust_n three_o now_o thou_o have_v a_o opportunity_n to_o deny_v thyself_o for_o jesus_n christ_n and_o to_o commend_v the_o way_n of_o god_n unto_o the_o world_n and_o to_o set_v a_o high_a price_n upon_o they_o for_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o christ_n in_o they_o when_o thou_o do_v deny_v the_o vain_a pleasure_n of_o sin_n when_o thou_o may_v enjoy_v they_o what_o a_o low_a value_n do_v thou_o set_v upon_o jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n when_o thou_o will_v follow_v he_o at_o no_o other_o time_n but_o in_o that_o which_o in_o thy_o own_o judgement_n be_v fit_a for_o nothing_o else_o although_o in_o truth_n it_o be_v most_o unfit_a for_o that_o this_o can_v bean_n act_v of_o selfdenial_n when_o we_o will_v never_o come_v to_o god_n till_o we_o have_v nothing_o to_o deny_v or_o part_v withal_o for_o he_o thou_o can_v not_o then_o say_v that_o thou_o forsake_v any_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n to_o come_v unto_o christ_n when_o it_o have_v already_o forsake_v thou_o what_o pleasure_n will_v thou_o deny_v to_o follow_v god_n in_o thy_o old_a age_n in_o that_o day_n when_o thou_o shall_v say_v i_o have_v no_o pleasure_n in_o it_o here_o will_v be_v no_o room_n leave_v for_o self_n denial_n in_o many_o thing_n but_o now_o it_o lie_v in_o the_o way_n evident_o to_o make_v out_o thy_o self-denial_n for_o now_o whilst_o thou_o be_v in_o the_o strength_n of_o thy_o day_n and_o many_o temptation_n to_o enjoy_v the_o world_n and_o many_o way_n to_o enjoy_v it_o also_o now_o to_o renounce_v all_o and_o come_v into_o christ_n will_v be_v a_o eminent_a act_n of_o self-deniall_n all_o man_n will_v say_v lo_o here_o be_v one_o who_o have_v leave_v all_o to_o follow_v the_o lord_n and_o will_v not_o this_o beget_v a_o high_a esteem_n in_o man_n of_o the_o way_n of_o god_n when_o they_o shall_v fee_v thou_o prize_v it_o above_o all_o profit_n and_o pleasure_n and_o preferment_n and_o friend_n and_o companion_n when_o they_o see_v thou_o
