hear_v of_o only_a in_o the_o first_o age_n of_o the_o church_n when_o the_o sacrament_n be_v always_o join_v with_o these_o lovefeast_n which_o be_v therefore_o in_o process_n of_o time_n whole_o high_a privilege_n as_o to_o be_v admit_v to_o this_o sacrament_n or_o of_o such_o excellent_a benefit_n as_o be_v confer_v upon_o we_o in_o it_o after_o all_o our_o care_n after_o all_o our_o preparation_n to_o make_v ourselves_o fit_a yet_o still_o we_o must_v acknowledge_v ourselves_o unworthy_a but_o to_o pick_v up_o the_o crumb_n that_o fall_v from_o our_o master_n table_n much_o more_o to_o sit_v and_o feast_v at_o it_o if_o we_o be_v not_o to_o receive_v this_o sacrament_n till_o we_o can_v account_v ourselves_o real_o worthy_a the_o best_a of_o man_n the_o more_o holy_a and_o humble_a they_o be_v the_o more_o averse_a will_v they_o be_v from_o this_o duty_n 2._o this_o unworthiness_n be_v no_o bar_n or_o hindrance_n to_o our_o receive_v this_o sacrament_n we_o be_v not_o worthy_a of_o the_o least_o mercy_n either_o spiritual_a or_o temporal_a which_o we_o enjoy_v must_v we_o therefore_o starve_v ourselves_o or_o go_v naked_a because_o we_o deserve_v not_o our_o food_n or_o raiment_n we_o be_v not_o worthy_a so_o much_o as_o to_o cast_v up_o our_o eye_n towards_o heaven_n the_o habitation_n of_o god_n holiness_n but_o what_o then_o shall_v we_o never_o make_v our_o humble_a address_n to_o the_o throne_n of_o god_n grace_n because_o we_o be_v not_o worthy_a to_o ask_v or_o to_o have_v our_o petition_n hear_v and_o grant_v by_o he_o shall_v we_o refuse_v any_o favour_n the_o kindness_n of_o heaven_n offer_v to_o we_o because_o they_o be_v beyond_o our_o merit_n or_o more_o than_o we_o can_v challenge_v or_o expect_v it_o be_v not_o say_v here_o in_o upon_o he_o so_o we_o be_v all_o unworthy_a to_o partake_v of_o this_o holy_a banquet_n but_o be_v invite_v and_o admit_v we_o may_v behave_v ourselves_o as_o become_v we_o in_o such_o a_o presence_n at_o such_o a_o solemnity_n and_o if_o by_o it_o we_o thankful_o commemorate_v the_o death_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o renounce_v all_o our_o sin_n and_o former_a evil_a way_n and_o there_o give_v up_o ourselves_o to_o be_v govern_v by_o he_o and_o vow_v better_a obedience_n and_o be_v affect_v with_o a_o true_a sense_n of_o his_o love_n then_o though_o unworthy_a of_o so_o great_a a_o favour_n yet_o we_o have_v worthy_o that_o be_v after_o a_o right_a manner_n as_o to_o god_n acceptance_n receive_v this_o bless_a sacrament_n but_o if_o now_o unworthy_a of_o so_o great_a honour_n and_o favour_n we_o also_o receive_v it_o unworthy_o after_o a_o profane_a disorderly_a manner_n not_o at_o a_o mind_v the_o end_n use_v or_o design_n of_o it_o without_o any_o repentance_n for_o sin_n christian_n that_o this_o sacrament_n be_v not_o food_n proper_a for_o babe_n and_o novice_n for_o those_o who_o often_o fail_v in_o their_o duty_n who_o be_v still_o only_o wrestle_v with_o their_o lust_n but_o have_v not_o yet_o get_v the_o mastery_n or_o victory_n over_o they_o that_o we_o ought_v first_o to_o be_v full_o assure_v of_o our_o salvation_n before_o we_o come_v to_o this_o holy_a table_n that_o this_o ordinance_n serve_v only_o to_o strengthen_v and_o confirm_v our_o faith_n and_o repentance_n and_o all_o other_o christian_a grace_n and_o virtue_n but_o not_o to_o beget_v any_o of_o they_o in_o we_o now_o here_o thus_o much_o must_v be_v grant_v that_o this_o sacrament_n do_v belong_v only_o to_o those_o that_o be_v within_o the_o pale_a of_o the_o visible_a church_n only_o to_o baptise_a christian_n that_o do_v public_o own_v their_o faith_n and_o christian_a profession_n that_o it_o be_v no_o mean_n of_o convert_v jew_n or_o infidel_n and_o that_o even_a christian_n by_o notorious_a evil_a life_n whereby_o they_o become_v scandalous_a to_o their_o brethren_n and_o incur_v the_o censure_n of_o the_o church_n may_v just_o forfeit_v all_o their_o right_n and_o title_n to_o this_o sacrament_n and_o far_o that_o it_o be_v a_o bold_a profanation_n of_o our_o saviour_n institution_n for_o any_o wicked_a person_n resolve_v to_o continue_v such_o to_o presume_v to_o bless_v god_n for_o that_o mercy_n and_o love_n of_o a_o redeemer_n which_o he_o do_v not_o in_o the_o least_o value_n thus_o far_o we_o be_v on_o all_o hand_n agree_v but_o not_o now_o to_o engage_v in_o any_o matter_n of_o controversy_n i_o shall_v only_o say_v that_o i_o can_v see_v no_o reason_n why_o to_o one_o that_o be_v real_o sensible_a of_o his_o sin_n and_o miscarriage_n contrary_a to_o his_o baptismal_a vow_n and_o profession_n and_o make_v some_o kind_n of_o resolution_n to_o forsake_v they_o why_o i_o say_v this_o sacrament_n as_o well_o as_o prayer_n or_o any_o other_o duty_n of_o religion_n may_v not_o be_v reckon_v as_o a_o mean_n of_o beget_v true_a repentance_n in_o he_o of_o turn_v he_o from_o sin_n to_o righteousness_n from_o the_o power_n of_o satan_n to_o god_n and_o for_o this_o i_o shall_v offer_v only_o this_o one_o plain_a argument_n which_o be_v obvious_a to_o every_o man_n that_o if_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n itself_o his_o bitter_a passion_n his_o whole_a gracious_a undertake_n for_o we_o be_v among_o other_o reason_n design_v by_o god_n also_o to_o convince_v we_o of_o the_o evil_a and_o danger_n of_o sin_n to_o bring_v we_o out_o of_o love_n with_o it_o and_o to_o engage_v we_o to_o a_o new_a and_o better_a life_n sure_o then_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o same_o thing_n represent_v to_o we_o in_o the_o sacrament_n the_o commemoration_n of_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n there_o make_v may_v also_o serve_v for_o the_o same_o great_a end_n and_o purpose_n if_o christ_n die_v that_o we_o shall_v die_v unto_o sin_n certain_o then_o the_o memory_n of_o his_o death_n may_v just_o be_v account_v a_o proper_a mean_n of_o kill_a sin_n in_o we_o nay_o what_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n can_v be_v imagine_v a_o more_o likely_a instrument_n to_o turn_v we_o from_o a_o life_n of_o sin_n to_o the_o practice_n of_o holiness_n than_o the_o frequent_a consideration_n of_o what_o our_o bless_a lord_n have_v do_v and_o suffer_v for_o we_o and_o if_o so_o it_o can_v be_v necessary_a that_o this_o change_n shall_v be_v complete_o wrought_v in_o we_o before_o we_o ever_o solemn_o commemorate_v his_o bloody_a passion_n for_o that_o be_v to_o suppose_v it_o necessary_a that_o the_o end_n shall_v be_v obtain_v before_o we_o use_v the_o mean_n it_o be_v not_o therefore_o absolute_o necessary_a that_o we_o shall_v be_v full_o assure_v that_o we_o be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n and_o in_o god_n favour_n and_o have_v repent_v enough_o and_o true_o forsake_v all_o our_o sin_n before_o we_o venture_v on_o this_o sacrament_n it_o be_v sufficient_a that_o we_o hearty_o and_o sincere_o resolve_v against_o they_o that_o we_o approach_v the_o lord_n table_n with_o honest_a and_o devout_a mind_n that_o we_o be_v real_o willing_a and_o desirous_a to_o use_v all_o mean_n to_o become_v better_a and_o if_o thus_o dispose_v we_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o a_o most_o effectual_a mean_n for_o the_o enable_v we_o to_o leave_v our_o sin_n and_o to_o lead_v a_o better_a life_n it_o be_v not_o our_o unworthiness_n but_o our_o resolve_v to_o continue_v in_o that_o state_n that_o make_v we_o unqualify_v for_o this_o sacrament_n 4._o if_o therefore_o by_o your_o unworthiness_n you_o mean_v that_o you_o live_v in_o sin_n and_o be_v resolve_v to_o do_v so_o and_o therefore_o dare_v not_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n for_o fear_v you_o shall_v far_o provoke_v god_n almighty_a i_o will_v suppose_v that_o in_o this_o you_o act_v prudent_o and_o wary_o but_o then_o i_o will_v advise_v you_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n and_o on_o the_o same_o account_n to_o leave_v off_o all_o other_o duty_n of_o religion_n as_o well_o as_o this_o if_o you_o will_v nor_o to_o join_v in_o any_o part_n of_o god_n solemn_a worship_n for_o god_n have_v often_o declare_v that_o he_o do_v far_o more_o abominate_a all_o such_o formal_a whine_a cringe_v hypocrite_n and_o will_v more_o severe_o punish_v they_o than_o the_o open_a and_o bold_a contemner_n of_o his_o authority_n and_o law_n the_o prayer_n of_o the_o wicked_a man_n be_v a_o abomination_n to_o the_o lord_n he_o hate_v the_o address_n of_o those_o who_o call_v he_o father_n and_o master_n and_o in_o word_n acknowledge_v he_o but_o yet_o continual_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v displease_v in_o his_o sight_n his_o soul_n loathe_v and_o nauseate_v all_o the_o service_n of_o impure_a worshipper_n you_o do_v but_o mock_v god_n base_o fawn_v upon_o and_o impudent_o flatter_v he_o when_o you_o present_v yourselves_o before_o he_o as_o his_o people_n and_o servant_n and_o yet_o secret_o hate_v he_o and_o wish_v he_o out_o of_o the_o world_n nay_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n for_o which_o you_o forbear_v the_o sacrament_n even_o lie_v aside_o your_o whole_a christian_a profession_n open_o renounce_v your_o baptism_n deny_v your_o saviour_n disow_v his_o religion_n for_o that_o be_v the_o safe_a course_n whilst_o you_o resolve_v to_o continue_v in_o sin_n and_o disobedience_n for_o god_n wrath_n shall_v be_v in_o the_o first_o place_n reveal_v against_o wicked_a christian_n and_o better_a will_v it_o be_v in_o the_o last_o day_n for_o tyre_n and_o sidon_n for_o sodom_n and_o gomorra_n than_o for_o those_o who_o be_v call_v by_o christ_n name_n and_o yet_o do_v not_o depart_v from_o iniquity_n if_o this_o pretence_n be_v true_a that_o you_o go_v out_o of_o the_o church_n when_o the_o sacrament_n be_v to_o be_v administer_v lest_o you_o shall_v far_o provoke_v god_n by_o unworthy_a receive_n it_o by_o the_o same_o reason_n keep_v from_o the_o church_n altogether_o lest_o you_o as_o high_o provoke_v god_n by_o be_v present_a at_o those_o prayer_n you_o do_v not_o yourselves_o unworthy_a and_o be_v resolve_v yet_o at_o least_o for_o some_o time_n to_o continue_v such_o alas_o what_o need_v such_o as_o you_o be_v afraid_a of_o this_o text_n in_o this_o case_n it_o ought_v to_o seem_v indifferent_a to_o you_o whether_o you_o receive_v or_o not_o damnation_n here_o threaten_v can_v be_v suppose_v reasonable_o to_o scare_v he_o from_o the_o sacrament_n who_o run_v the_o constant_a hazard_n of_o it_o by_o live_v in_o know_a sin_n this_o can_v be_v no_o such_o terrible_a word_n to_o a_o habitual_a and_o resolve_a sinner_n he_o that_o can_v swear_v and_o talk_v profane_o and_o live_v intemperate_o and_o loose_o and_o without_o any_o fear_n or_o regret_n commit_v mortal_a sin_n in_o vain_a pretend_v fear_n of_o damnation_n for_o not_o do_v that_o which_o be_v indeed_o his_o duty_n for_o it_o be_v a_o most_o odd_a and_o ridiculous_a thing_n to_o be_v afraid_a of_o do_v what_o our_o saviour_n have_v command_v we_o whilst_o we_o be_v not_o in_o the_o least_o afraid_a every_o day_n of_o do_v what_o he_o
i_o dare_v not_o do_v i_o say_v he_o shall_v be_v save_v i_o can_v what_o say_v i_o then_o will_v you_o free_v yourself_o from_o all_o uncertainty_n in_o this_o matter_n repent_v now_o whilst_o you_o be_v in_o health_n forsake_v your_o sin_n whilst_o you_o be_v able_a to_o commit_v they_o and_o then_o you_o be_v sure_a of_o pardon_n there_o be_v indeed_o another_o church_n in_o the_o world_n that_o can_v teach_v man_n how_o to_o be_v save_v on_o a_o deathbed_n even_o without_o repentance_n which_o have_v find_v out_o way_n to_o make_v it_o not_o only_o possible_a but_o very_o easy_a for_o any_o ungodly_a wretch_n to_o secure_v himself_o from_o hell_n at_o length_n when_o he_o come_v to_o die_v by_o less_o than_o half_a a_o hour_n work_v but_o we_o have_v not_o so_o learned_a christ_n nor_o dare_v we_o be_v so_o false_a to_o our_o trust_n or_o to_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n as_o to_o give_v they_o certain_a assurance_n of_o everlasting_a life_n on_o any_o other_o term_n than_o a_o constant_a habitual_a obedience_n to_o the_o law_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o only_a certain_a way_n to_o die_v well_o be_v to_o live_v well_o nor_o shall_v i_o go_v about_o to_o determine_v how_o much_o of_o our_o life_n must_v be_v spend_v in_o the_o practice_n of_o righteousness_n and_o goodness_n before_o we_o can_v be_v say_v to_o have_v live_v well_o since_o this_o vary_v according_a to_o the_o circumstance_n of_o man_n which_o be_v infinite_a this_o be_v as_o if_o a_o man_n shall_v ask_v how_o long_o it_o will_v be_v before_o a_o fool_n can_v become_v wise_a or_o a_o unlearned_a man_n a_o scholar_n which_o differ_v according_a to_o the_o capacity_n of_o the_o man_n his_o industry_n and_o opportunity_n and_o god_n blessing_n but_o only_o thus_o much_o i_o think_v may_v safe_o be_v say_v that_o so_o much_o time_n of_o our_o life_n be_v necessary_a to_o be_v spend_v in_o the_o practice_n of_o goodness_n as_o that_o we_o may_v from_o the_o temper_n of_o our_o mind_n and_o the_o course_n of_o our_o action_n be_v true_o denominate_v holy_a humble_a pure_a meek_a patient_a just_a temperate_a lover_n of_o god_n and_o man_n for_o the_o gospel_n promise_v not_o eternal_a life_n and_o glory_n to_o any_o but_o to_o person_n so_o and_o so_o qualify_v and_o it_o be_v undoubted_a that_o a_o few_o pious_a wish_n prayer_n and_o purpose_n or_o a_o good_a will_n make_v at_o our_o death_n will_v not_o suffice_v to_o denominate_v we_o such_o god_n do_v not_o just_a watch_n how_o man_n die_v but_o he_o will_v judge_v every_o man_n according_a to_o his_o work_n and_o the_o deed_n he_o have_v do_v in_o the_o flesh_n and_o those_o disposition_n we_o have_v nourish_v love_v and_o delight_v in_o all_o our_o life_n will_v follow_v and_o attend_v we_o to_o another_o world_n and_o only_o swear_v by_o the_o sacred_a name_n of_o god_n but_o also_o by_o any_o of_o his_o creature_n swear_v not_o at_o all_o no_o not_o so_o much_o as_o by_o the_o heaven_n by_o the_o earth_n or_o by_o jerusalem_n and_o the_o reason_n he_o give_v be_v because_o in_o all_o such_o form_n of_o swear_v by_o creature_n though_o god_n be_v not_o express_o name_v yet_o he_o himself_o be_v real_o refer_v to_o and_o tacit_o invoke_v who_o be_v the_o supreme_a lord_n and_o maker_n of_o all_o when_o you_o swear_v by_o the_o heaven_n you_o

such_o thing_n of_o those_o creature_n they_o swear_v by_o then_o must_v such_o oath_n if_o they_o have_v any_o sense_n at_o all_o refer_v to_o god_n and_o his_o name_n must_v be_v understand_v to_o be_v far_a here_o to_o be_v observe_v that_o though_o all_o manner_n of_o swear_v whether_o by_o the_o name_n of_o god_n or_o any_o of_o his_o creature_n be_v thus_o prohibit_v swear_v not_o at_o swear_v some_o of_o their_o say_n to_o this_o purpose_n be_v quote_v by_o grotius_n in_o his_o comment_n upon_o these_o word_n but_o than_o it_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v 1._o that_o there_o be_v but_o some_o few_o of_o they_o of_o this_o opinion_n and_o that_o against_o the_o current_a doctrine_n of_o the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o primitive_a christian_n and_o 2._o against_o the_o know_a allow_a practice_n among_o they_o for_o we_o all_o along_o find_v there_o be_v many_o christian_n in_o the_o army_n of_o the_o heathen_a emperor_n and_o they_o can_v not_o have_v serve_v under_o they_o without_o take_v the_o military_a oath_n which_o they_o do_v not_o use_v to_o scruple_n so_o they_o be_v not_o put_v to_o swear_v by_o any_o of_o their_o genii_n or_o heathen_a deity_n or_o fortune_n or_o the_o like_a 3._o their_o great_a argument_n against_o take_v of_o oath_n be_v draw_v from_o the_o invincible_a faith_n and_o truth_n of_o christian_n who_o upon_o no_o consideration_n whatever_o can_v either_o be_v force_v or_o win_v to_o affirm_v what_o they_o know_v to_o be_v false_a or_o promise_v what_o they_o never_o intend_v to_o perform_v and_o this_o they_o be_v so_o remarkable_a for_o that_o they_o think_v it_o a_o diminution_n or_o scandalous_a affront_n offer_v to_o they_o to_o be_v put_v to_o their_o oath_n they_o always_o have_v such_o a_o regard_n to_o their_o word_n and_o it_o be_v so_o sacred_a a_o thing_n at_o all_o time_n to_o speak_v truth_n that_o they_o will_v not_o be_v so_o much_o disinherit_v or_o disparage_v as_o to_o have_v the_o security_n of_o a_o oath_n require_v of_o they_o the_o constant_a tenor_n of_o their_o life_n they_o think_v do_v bear_v a_o great_a testimony_n to_o what_o the_o christian_n affirm_v and_o render_v it_o more_o credible_a than_o the_o oath_n of_o any_o other_o man_n can_v what_o they_o witness_v but_o now_o because_o in_o latter_a day_n some_o sectary_n both_o here_o and_o elsewhere_o have_v from_o these_o word_n swear_v not_o at_o all_o plead_v against_o the_o lawfulness_n of_o take_v of_o any_o oath_n though_o thereto_o require_v by_o the_o magistrate_n though_o it_o be_v a_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n to_o their_o prince_n or_o when_o they_o give_v testimony_n in_o a_o public_a cause_n i_o shall_v brief_o and_o plain_o make_v out_o to_o you_o that_o this_o prohibition_n of_o our_o judgement_n yet_o we_o all_o grant_v that_o this_o must_v be_v confine_v to_o private_a person_n that_o this_o forbid_v not_o the_o magistrate_n inflict_v capital_a punishment_n and_o than_o that_o sufficient_a cause_n but_o this_o do_v not_o infringe_v the_o right_n which_o magistrate_n have_v to_o impose_v oath_n on_o their_o subject_n and_o to_o require_v the_o utmost_a and_o great_a security_n for_o their_o fidelity_n and_o obedience_n this_o do_v not_o forbid_v swear_v when_o it_o be_v requisite_a for_o the_o determine_n of_o important_a controversy_n or_o distribution_n of_o justice_n when_o it_o be_v for_o the_o public_a good_a that_o our_o testimony_n shall_v be_v credit_v and_o make_v more_o valid_a by_o the_o solemnity_n of_o a_o oath_n and_o that_o such_o exception_n
