of_o the_o write_a word_n be_v great_a and_o excellent_a far_o above_o the_o subject_n of_o all_o humane_a science_n as_o reveal_v god_n the_o way_n of_o his_o worship_n and_o of_o man_n salvation_n and_o so_o make_v they_o great_a who_o embrace_v it_o for_o it_o be_v the_o great_a thing_n of_o my_o law_n not_o to_o be_v slight_v nor_o contemn_v 5._o it_o be_v the_o great_a though_o usual_a sin_n of_o the_o visible_a church_n to_o live_v stranger_n to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o little_a conversant_a with_o it_o to_o look_v upon_o its_o direction_n as_o of_o little_a moment_n and_o that_o there_o be_v little_a hazard_n in_o not_o walk_v according_o to_o they_o and_o to_o look_v upon_o they_o as_o very_o strange_a and_o contrary_a to_o our_o disposition_n and_o have_v little_a reason_n for_o what_o be_v enjoin_v all_o these_o concur_v in_o their_o way_n in_o that_o they_o be_v count_v as_o a_o strange_a thing_n they_o of_o israel_n make_v little_a use_n of_o the_o word_n they_o think_v it_o a_o small_a matter_n to_o stand_v so_o much_o upon_o the_o place_n of_o worship_n and_o they_o think_v it_o a_o unreasonable_a thing_n to_o urge_v that_o way_n of_o worship_n which_o will_v be_v so_o destructive_a to_o the_o state_n of_o israel_n if_o they_o go_v up_o to_o jerusalem_n and_o therefore_o they_o look_v on_o all_o these_o thing_n as_o little_o concern_v they_o ver._n 13._o they_o sacrifice_v flesh_n for_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o my_o offering_n and_o eat_v it_o but_o the_o lord_n accept_v they_o not_o now_o will_v he_o remember_v their_o iniquity_n and_o visit_v their_o sin_n they_o shall_v return_v to_o egypt_n the_o three_o branch_n of_o the_o challenge_n be_v that_o in_o these_o sacrifice_n which_o they_o pretend_v to_o offer_v to_o god_n they_o be_v both_o lifeless_a and_o destitute_a of_o all_o spiritual_a service_n and_o selfish_a therefore_o the_o lord_n declare_v their_o service_n to_o be_v reject_v and_o threaten_v that_o he_o will_v call_v assyrian_n whence_o lear_a 1._o externall_n worship_n without_o life_n and_o spiritual_a disposition_n and_o particular_o ceremonial_a worship_n without_o a_o eye_n to_o the_o substance_n and_o thing_n signify_v be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o dead_a carcase_n in_o god_n account_n for_o they_o sacrifice_v flesh_n for_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o my_o offering_n that_o be_v their_o sacrifice_n which_o they_o pretend_v to_o offer_v to_o i_o if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o fault_n in_o they_o of_o offer_v they_o in_o a_o wrong_a place_n and_o by_o unlawful_a minister_n etc._n etc._n yet_o they_o be_v but_o flesh_n in_o respect_n they_o mind_n no_o more_o but_o the_o outward_a work_n see_v isa_n 66.3_o jer._n 7.21_o 22_o 23._o 2._o most_o part_n of_o worshipper_n follow_v the_o external_a duty_n of_o religion_n no_o further_o than_o their_o own_o end_n lead_v they_o and_o man_n own_o advantage_n be_v the_o upholder_n of_o all_o false_a religion_n for_o they_o sacrifice_v and_o eat_v it_o that_o be_v they_o observe_v no_o rule_n of_o burnt-offering_n wherein_o all_o the_o sacrifice_n be_v offer_v up_o to_o god_n but_o of_o all_o of_o they_o they_o must_v eat_v a_o part_n as_o be_v allow_v in_o peace_n or_o thanksgiving-offering_n and_o so_o they_o regard_v their_o own_o belly_n most_o 3._o however_o man_n cry_v up_o their_o own_o way_n yet_o they_o will_v find_v that_o want_n of_o a_o divine_a approbation_n will_v undo_v all_o for_o it_o be_v a_o judgement_n sufficient_a but_o the_o lord_n accept_v they_o not_o see_v 2_o cor._n 10.18_o 4._o god_n will_v not_o forget_v unrepented_a of_o iniquity_n though_o for_o a_o time_n he_o spare_v it_o but_o will_v call_v sinner_n to_o a_o account_n when_o it_o be_v least_o expect_v and_o particular_o incursion_n of_o assyria_n into_o israel_n make_v it_o all_o his_o care_n to_o secure_a judah_n by_o fortify_v many_o city_n as_o we_o find_v they_o challenge_v isa_n 22.8_o 9_o 10_o 11._o and_o the_o judgement_n be_v execute_v by_o senacherib_n after_o the_o captivity_n of_o israel_n isa_n 36.1_o doct._n 1._o when_o the_o lord_n be_v challenge_v gross_a provocation_n he_o will_v not_o for_o all_o delight_v in_o and_o rely_v upon_o god_n will_v not_o want_v somewhat_o beside_o to_o supply_v that_o want_n therefore_o be_v build_v temple_n and_o multiply_v fence_v city_n join_v together_o here_o as_o set_v up_o somewhat_o in_o god_n room_n 3._o idolatry_n in_o worship_n and_o carnal_a confidence_n do_v bewray_v man_n forgetfulness_n of_o god_n who_o authority_n prohibit_v these_o thing_n and_o who_o kindness_n to_o his_o people_n shall_v engage_v they_o not_o to_o abandon_v his_o worship_n nor_o trust_v in_o any_o thing_n beside_o he_o and_o particular_o how_o much_o soever_o man_n pretend_v to_o remember_v god_n by_o set_v up_o idol_n and_o temple_n to_o they_o yet_o in_o all_o this_o they_o do_v but_o bewray_v forgetfulness_n of_o god_n for_o israel_n have_v forget_v his_o maker_n who_o not_o only_o create_v he_o but_o advance_v he_o to_o that_o dignity_n he_o enjoy_v in_o his_o sin_v and_o the_o like_a be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o judah_n 4._o mens_fw-la place_v their_o confidence_n in_o outward_a mean_n of_o defence_n and_o safety_n when_o yet_o they_o little_a mind_n the_o wrath_n of_o god_n against_o sin_n be_v a_o iniquity_n to_o be_v join_v in_o some_o sort_n with_o idolatry_n in_o worship_n for_o this_o be_v judah_n sin_n in_o multiply_v fence_v city_n which_o be_v hold_v forth_o to_o be_v of_o the_o same_o nature_n with_o israel_n build_v temple_n because_o both_o draw_v the_o heart_n from_o god_n 5._o as_o judgement_n inflict_v in_o god_n anger_n will_v easy_o like_o fire_n consume_v most_o stately_a place_n so_o the_o lord_n be_v provoke_v to_o inflict_v these_o when_o man_n put_v confidence_n in_o these_o thing_n any_o thing_n a_o people_n and_o especial_o the_o church_n put_v confidence_n in_o will_v sure_o be_v plague_v for_o because_o judah_n have_v multiply_v fence_v city_n and_o make_v this_o his_o confidence_n otherwise_o it_o be_v no_o sin_n to_o use_v mean_n of_o defence_n i_o will_v send_v a_o fire_n upon_o his_o city_n and_o it_o shall_v devour_v the_o palace_n thereof_o chap._n ix_o the_o doctrine_n of_o this_o chap_n relate_v to_o a_o time_n wherein_o israel_n flourish_v much_o by_o reason_n of_o outward_a plenty_n victory_n confederacy_n with_o their_o neighbour_n and_o therefore_o do_v harden_v and_o please_v themselver_n in_o their_o sin_n whatever_o
whatever_o sinner_n dream_v yet_o there_o be_v no_o resist_v nor_o abide_v of_o a_o day_n of_o vengeance_n nor_o any_o refuge_n against_o it_o but_o by_o turn_v to_o god_n by_o faith_n and_o unfeigned_a repentance_n for_o so_o much_o be_v hold_v out_o in_o this_o further_a confirmation_n of_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o strength_n of_o this_o army_n for_o the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o not_o of_o the_o appear_v of_o these_o creature_n only_o be_v great_a and_o very_a terrible_a and_o who_o can_v abide_v it_o ver._n 12._o therefore_o also_o now_o say_v the_o lord_n turn_v you_o even_o to_o i_o withal_o your_o heart_n and_o with_o fast_v and_o with_o weep_v and_o with_o mourning_n 13._o and_o rend_v your_o heart_n and_o not_o your_o garment_n and_o turn_v unto_o the_o lord_z your_o god_n for_o he_o be_v gracious_a and_o merciful_a flow_v to_o anger_n and_o of_o great_a kindness_n and_o repent_v he_o of_o the_o evil_n follow_v the_o second_o part_n of_o the_o chap._n wherein_o the_o lord_n call_v upon_o they_o to_o make_v right_a use_n of_o this_o calamity_n and_o of_o the_o warning_n give_v they_o this_o he_o do_v in_o two_o exhortation_n whereof_o the_o first_o end_n of_o v._o 13._o be_v take_v from_o the_o property_n of_o god_n who_o be_v merciful_a and_o gracious_a not_o easy_o provoke_v rich_a in_o kindness_n and_o who_o upon_o sinner_n repentance_n be_v therefore_o after_o all_o the_o representation_n of_o plague_n and_o of_o terror_n upon_o man_n they_o be_v call_v to_o this_o as_o the_o only_a remedy_n and_o way_n to_o a_o issue_n and_o as_o the_o duty_n which_o they_o can_v but_o mind_v who_o be_v serious_o affect_v with_o such_o a_o condition_n therefore_o turn_v you_o see_v psal_n 106.44_o jer._n 31.18_o 19_o 20._o 2._o when_o god_n be_v threaten_v most_o sad_o and_o proceed_v most_o severe_o he_o will_v be_v still_o understand_v as_o invite_v by_o these_o to_o repentance_n and_o willing_a to_o accept_v of_o it_o for_o the_o lord_n who_o threaten_v do_v exhort_v and_o he_o bring_v it_o in_o with_o a_o therefore_o or_o upon_o the_o back_n of_o the_o former_a discourse_n to_o show_v that_o this_o be_v his_o scope_n in_o all_o of_o it_o therefore_o say_v the_o lord_n turn_v you_o 3._o such_o as_o have_v be_v so_o long_a abuser_n of_o god_n patience_n as_o matter_n seem_v irremediable_a and_o stroke_n be_v either_o imminent_a even_o now_o also_o to_o turn_v 4_o such_o as_o do_v mind_n repentance_n especial_o when_o god_n declare_v himself_o angry_a will_v not_o linger_v nor_o delay_n to_o set_v about_o it_o so_o much_o therefore_o do_v he_o begin_v with_o turn_v you_o to_o i_o where_o the_o exhortation_n do_v not_o import_v any_o power_n in_o man_n but_o only_o point_v out_o his_o duty_n and_o show_v that_o exhortation_n be_v a_o mean_a which_o god_n bless_v to_o his_o elect_n and_o not_o only_o deal_v thereby_o with_o they_o as_o with_o rational_a creature_n but_o therewith_o impart_v strength_n that_o they_o may_v obey_v 7._o in_o turn_v unto_o god_n man_n will_v beware_v of_o be_v faint_a or_o feign_a but_o will_v study_v to_o be_v sincere_a and_o single_a since_o they_o can_v attain_v to_o perfection_n for_o this_o in_o a_o gospel-sense_n be_v to_o turn_v even_o to_o i_o with_o all_o your_o heart_n 8._o as_o man_n will_v begin_v at_o conversion_n to_o god_n so_o they_o will_v therewith_o study_v to_o be_v deep_o affect_v for_o sin_n and_o by-gone_a evil_n and_o under_o the_o judgement_n procure_v thereby_o and_o will_v evidence_n their_o affliction_n of_o spirit_n by_o sorrow_n and_o humiliation_n suitable_a in_o some_o measure_n to_o their_o condition_n therefore_o be_v it_o add_v as_o a_o evidence_n and_o companion_n of_o the_o former_a turn_v you_o with_o fast_v and_o with_o weep_v and_o with_o mourning_n or_o with_o such_o sorrow_n as_o be_v usual_a in_o mourning_n for_o the_o dead_a and_o express_v not_o only_o by_o wail_v but_o by_o smite_v on_o the_o breast_n and_o the_o like_a gesture_n it_o be_v a_o change_n to_o be_v suspect_v where_o man_n please_v themselves_o with_o their_o present_a good_a condition_n and_o do_v light_o pass_v over_o their_o former_a miscarriage_n and_o albeit_o sign_n and_o expression_n of_o sorrow_n be_v not_o always_o at_o command_n when_o man_n be_v most_o afflict_a yet_o repentance_n for_o gross_a and_o long_o continue_v in_o iniquity_n and_o under_o extraordinary_a judgement_n will_v not_o be_v pass_v over_o in_o a_o ordinary_a and_o common_a way_n 9_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n in_o perform_v repentance_n and_o a_o good_a evidence_n of_o it_o when_o our_o stout_a heart_n be_v break_v and_o afflict_v with_o the_o sense_n of_o sin_n and_o of_o god_n displeasure_n for_o it_o therefore_o it_o be_v subjoin_v and_o rend_v your_o heart_n or_o every_o one_o his_o own_o heart_n which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v understand_v literal_o but_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v afflict_v in_o spirit_n as_o ps_n 51.17_o 10._o we_o be_v prone_a to_o hypocrisy_n and_o aught_o to_o beware_v of_o dally_v with_o god_n even_o when_o we_o be_v in_o great_a distress_n and_o make_v fair_o show_v of_o repentance_n therefore_o be_v it_o needful_a to_o qualify_v this_o exhortation_n rend_v your_o heart_n and_o not_o your_o garment_n 11._o god_n be_v not_o please_v nor_o will_v a_o true_a penitent_n be_v please_v with_o external_a performance_n and_o ceremony_n neglect_v substance_n for_o say_v he_o rend_v your_o heart_n and_o not_o your_o garment_n however_o they_o make_v frequent_a use_n of_o this_o sign_n in_o time_n of_o great_a sorrow_n as_o gen._n 37.34_o 2_o sam._n 13.19_o job_n 1.20_o and_o frequent_o yet_o god_n do_v not_o allow_v of_o it_o when_o it_o be_v alone_o or_o prefer_v to_o the_o other_o as_o be_v say_v in_o another_o case_n hos_n 6.6_o though_o we_o be_v willing_a to_o do_v many_o thing_n rather_o than_o bow_v and_o afflict_v our_o heart_n before_o god_n 12._o in_o all_o these_o exercise_n of_o repentance_n we_o will_v again_o and_o again_o take_v heed_n that_o we_o deceive_v not_o ourselves_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o our_o conversion_n and_o pretend_v only_a to_o it_o till_o our_o particular_a distress_n be_v remove_v and_o though_o we_o find_v ourselves_o real_a yet_o we_o be_v to_o look_v on_o it_o as_o a_o work_n wherein_o we_o shall_v still_o make_v progress_n therefore_o after_o the_o former_a exhortation_n v._o 12._o it_o be_v again_o subjoin_v and_o turn_v
give_v to_o they_o as_o a_o type_n of_o heaven_n and_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v scatter_v into_o egypt_n whither_o many_o of_o they_o flee_v and_o into_o assyria_n whither_o they_o be_v carry_v by_o the_o conqueror_n where_o by_o reason_n of_o want_n they_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o observe_v the_o distinction_n of_o meat_n prescribe_v in_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n which_o it_o seem_v they_o have_v still_o observe_v in_o that_o particular_a notwithstanding_o their_o defection_n in_o other_o thing_n or_o shall_v be_v constrain_v to_o eat_v unclean_a meat_n to_o the_o reproach_n of_o their_o religion_n or_o shall_v voluntary_o conform_v themselves_o to_o the_o custom_n of_o the_o heathen_a whence_o learn_v 1._o captivity_n and_o exile_n be_v a_o addition_n to_o the_o stroke_n of_o scarcity_n or_o any_o other_o want_n at_o home_n in_o a_o people_n own_o country_n therefore_o it_o be_v add_v to_o the_o former_a as_o a_o further_a degree_n of_o misery_n they_o shall_v not_o dwell_v in_o the_o land_n but_o return_v to_o egypt_n where_o they_o be_v in_o bondage_n before_o to_o meet_v with_o new_a misery_n and_o assyria_n 2._o albeit_o now_o there_o be_v no_o land_n that_o be_v typical_a and_o the_o earth_n be_v the_o lord_n to_o all_o exile_n who_o walk_v in_o his_o way_n yet_o this_o threaten_n of_o drive_v they_o from_o the_o lord_n land_n may_v teach_v that_o it_o be_v the_o sad_a of_o calamity_n to_o be_v deprive_v of_o mercy_n which_o be_v give_v in_o special_a favour_n and_o particular_o to_o be_v deprive_v of_o the_o mercy_n of_o be_v in_o god_n church_n and_o family_n for_o so_o much_o mercy_n be_v import_v in_o this_o type_n which_o be_v now_o to_o be_v take_v from_o they_o 3._o as_o for_o this_o effect_n of_o their_o exile_n that_o they_o shall_v eat_v unclean_a thing_n it_o may_v be_v understand_v diverse_o as_o 1._o that_o many_o of_o they_o be_v necessitate_v to_o eat_v forbid_v and_o unclean_a meat_n in_o their_o exile_n because_o they_o can_v get_v no_o other_o in_o which_o case_n albeit_o it_o be_v no_o sin_n to_o prefer_v the_o moral_a duty_n of_o preserve_v their_o own_o life_n to_o the_o ceremonial_a command_n about_o distinction_n of_o meat_n as_o be_v clear_a in_o david_n case_n and_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o sabbath_n matth._n 12.1_o 7._o yet_o this_o shall_v have_v be_v a_o very_a humble_v case_n unto_o they_o and_o it_o shall_v have_v be_v look_v on_o as_o the_o fruit_n of_o much_o voluntary_a sin_n and_o neglect_v of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n when_o they_o be_v put_v in_o that_o condition_n which_o lay_v such_o a_o humble_v though_o not_o sinful_a necessity_n upon_o they_o as_o they_o can_v not_o stick_v to_o these_o observasion_n which_o be_v a_o part_n of_o their_o glory_n above_o all_o nation_n and_o so_o ought_v man_n to_o reckon_v when_o they_o be_v put_v to_o flee_v or_o to_o be_v take_v up_o with_o confusion_n &_o distraction_n through_o tumult_n on_o the_o sabbath-day_n or_o in_o the_o like_a case_n for_o though_o to_o flee_v or_o be_v disturb_v when_o god_n call_v man_n to_o it_o be_v not_o their_o sin_n yet_o it_o may_v be_v the_o fruit_n of_o much_o former_a sin_n 2._o just_a fruit_n of_o their_o despise_v the_o rule_n of_o the_o word_n and_o of_o wound_v their_o own_o conscience_n and_o contemn_v the_o check_n thereof_o when_o they_o be_v put_v under_o the_o power_n of_o such_o cruel_a task_n master_n as_o have_v no_o respect_n to_o man_n conscience_n in_o thing_n concern_v which_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v most_o clear_a and_o it_o teach_v further_o that_o they_o who_o voluntary_o sleight_v the_o word_n of_o god_n in_o their_o ordinary_a walk_n and_o practice_n will_v never_o be_v honour_v to_o bear_v witness_n to_o it_o or_o the_o truth_n therein_o in_o a_o day_n of_o trial_n but_o will_v much_o more_o transgress_v when_o they_o be_v put_v to_o it_o by_o terror_n from_o man_n for_o albeit_o this_o be_v the_o height_n of_o tyranny_n and_o cruelty_n on_o their_o oppressor_n part_v yet_o that_o can_v no_o way_n assoil_v they_o either_o as_o to_o their_o sin_n procure_v this_o judgement_n to_o come_v upon_o they_o or_o as_o to_o the_o guilt_n itself_o of_o sin_v against_o the_o law_n and_o renounce_v of_o their_o profession_n and_o of_o fit_v themselves_o for_o defection_n by_o their_o voluntary_a transgression_n but_o 3._o this_o seem_v to_o be_v rather_o true_a of_o most_o of_o they_o that_o as_o they_o be_v not_o humble_v under_o any_o necessity_n they_o be_v drive_v to_o so_o they_o voluntary_o and_o without_o any_o necessity_n do_v conform_v themselves_o to_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o heathen_a among_o who_o they_o live_v and_o the_o lord_n by_o drive_v they_o into_o exile_n among_o the_o heathen_n give_v they_o up_o so_o to_o do_v that_o so_o they_o who_o in_o their_o own_o land_n do_v too_o much_o participate_v with_o idolater_n in_o most_o substantial_a part_n of_o worship_n and_o be_v in_o reality_n as_o bad_a as_o they_o may_v not_o deceive_v themselves_o or_o other_o with_o the_o observation_n of_o external_a rite_n but_o may_v lose_v the_o very_a external_a profession_n of_o their_o religion_n and_o become_v altogether_o like_o the_o heathen_a and_o so_o it_o teach_v that_o when_o man_n do_v inward_o pollute_v themselves_o and_o do_v make_v defection_n from_o the_o substance_n of_o religion_n the_o lord_n do_v not_o respect_v a_o outward_a show_n of_o purity_n but_o will_v give_v they_o up_o to_o such_o further_a defection_n or_o such_o calamity_n and_o snare_n as_o may_v make_v they_o appear_v outward_o as_o they_o be_v before_o he_o inward_o and_o in_o reality_n for_o his_o give_v they_o up_o to_o eat_v unclean_a thing_n be_v but_o the_o fruit_n and_o just_a reward_n of_o their_o inward_a pollution_n and_o of_o their_o former_a defection_n from_o his_o true_a worship_n it_o do_v also_o further_o teach_v that_o whatever_o noise_n man_n may_v make_v abour_n the_o profession_n or_o external_a show_n of_o religion_n yet_o such_o as_o have_v lose_v the_o reality_n thereof_o will_v soon_o cast_v off_o the_o very_a external_a show_n if_o they_o have_v a_o tentation_n for_o when_o they_o come_v to_o live_v among_o the_o heathen_a they_o give_v speedy_a proof_n by_o their_o conformity_n to_o their_o way_n of_o how_o little_a worth_n all_o their_o former_a pretence_n be_v of_o cleave_v to_o god_n way_n in_o many_o external_a rite_n when_o yet_o they_o have_v make_v so_o foul_a defection_n verse_n 4._o they_o shall_v not_o offer_v wine_n to_o escape_v to_o preserve_v a_o people_n to_o god_n upon_o earth_n and_o at_o last_o to_o inherit_v salvation_n doct._n 1._o be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o visible_a church_n or_o of_o the_o world_n never_o so_o deplorable_a and_o desperate_a yet_o it_o shall_v not_o drive_v man_n from_o god_n his_o truth_n and_o pure_a worship_n but_o rather_o make_v they_o cleave_v to_o it_o more_o and_o evidence_n this_o by_o frequent_a and_o earnest_a call_n on_o he_o for_o this_o be_v the_o duty_n require_v under_o these_o calamity_n to_o call_v on_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n under_o which_o be_v comprehend_v all_o outward_a and_o inward_a worship_n of_o god_n whereof_o this_o be_v a_o chief_a part_n and_o man_n cleave_v to_o it_o 2._o as_o god_n be_v able_a to_o save_v in_o great_a extremity_n so_o he_o will_v undoubted_o save_v and_o deliver_v they_o who_o cleave_v to_o he_o and_o seek_v he_o be_v of_o what_o nation_n or_o people_n they_o will_n he_o will_v either_o hide_v some_o of_o they_o from_o trouble_n in_o great_a tempest_n or_o preserve_v they_o under_o it_o till_o he_o give_v a_o issue_n from_o it_o here_o or_o hereafter_o and_o at_o last_o will_v complete_o save_v they_o for_o whosoever_o shall_v call_v on_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n shall_v be_v deliver_v or_o escape_v see_v rom._n 10.13_o 3._o the_o church_n be_v the_o place_n of_o great_a safety_n and_o where_o deliverance_n may_v most_o ready_o be_v expect_v of_o any_o and_o however_o it_o fare_v with_o particular_a person_n in_o time_n of_o commotion_n yet_o the_o lord_n will_v still_o preserve_v a_o church_n and_o remnant_n in_o the_o world_n yea_o even_o a_o remnant_n of_o jew_n till_o their_o full_a conversion_n the_o efore_o say_v he_o for_o in_o mount_n zion_n and_o in_o jerusalem_n shall_v he_o deliverance_n and_o in_o the_o remnant_n where_o he_o name_v zion_n and_o jerusalem_n not_o only_o as_o a_o type_n of_o the_o church_n wherein_o safety_n be_v to_o be_v find_v and_o the_o remnant_n be_v to_o be_v preserve_v but_o to_o point_v out_o that_o of_o the_o jew_n belong_v to_o these_o place_n he_o will_v keep_v still_o a_o remnant_n rom._n 11.5_o till_o that_o day_n come_v whereof_o he_o speak_v in_o the_o next_o chapter_n 4._o god_n have_v pass_v his_o word_n for_o the_o preservation_n of_o a_o remnant_n under_o trouble_n and_o this_o be_v to_o be_v cast_v out_o of_o it_o and_o if_o they_o who_o be_v so_o universal_o spread_v through_o the_o earth_n need_v general_a commotion_n to_o make_v they_o miserable_a 5._o when_o god_n be_v shake_v the_o earth_n to_o overturn_v enemy_n god_n people_n may_v be_v exercise_v with_o many_o fear_n and_o apprehension_n that_o the_o storm_n will_v break_v upon_o they_o therefore_o they_o need_v a_o promise_n to_o secure_v they_o against_o this_o 6._o nothing_o will_v be_v able_a to_o secure_v the_o heart_n of_o god_n people_n against_o the_o terror_n of_o a_o time_n of_o great_a commotion_n but_o god_n elsewhere_o in_o his_o name_n be_v his_o word_n 2._o however_o man_n contemn_v god_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o subjection_n to_o he_o yet_o he_o will_v be_v their_o party_n to_o punish_v they_o for_o their_o sin_n whether_o they_o will_v or_o no_o for_o amos_n get_v it_o in_o commission_n to_o publish_v that_o god_n will_v manifest_v himself_o dreadful_a against_o they_o and_o he_o say_v the_o v._o 2._o but_o here_o the_o body_n of_o the_o people_n be_v consume_v 4._o the_o lord_n in_o great_a severity_n do_v yet_o remember_v mercy_n towards_o his_o people_n even_o threaten_n against_o they_o have_v promise_n of_o mercy_n in_o their_o bosom_n and_o in_o particular_a no_o sad_a dispensation_n towards_o israel_n do_v utter_o make_v void_a god_n mercy_n towards_o they_o for_o so_o do_v appear_v here_o albeit_o it_o be_v a_o threaten_a that_o they_o be_v but_o ten_o yet_o that_o they_o be_v ten_o be_v a_o mercy_n and_o promise_n see_v isa_n 6.13_o verse_n 4._o for_o thus_o say_v the_o lord_n unto_o the_o house_n of_o israel_n seek_v you_o i_o and_o you_o shall_v live_v 5._o for_o seek_v not_o bethel_n nor_o enter_v into_o gilgal_n and_o pass_v not_o to_o beersheba_n for_o not_o follow_v their_o idolatrous_a course_n and_o to_o this_o a_o reason_n be_v sub-joined_n that_o the_o place_n where_o their_o idol_n be_v entertain_v and_o worship_v be_v to_o be_v consume_v by_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v their_o folly_n to_o follow_v they_o from_o v._o 4._o learn_v 1._o the_o lord_n scope_n when_o he_o threaten_v most_o severe_o be_v to_o drive_v his_o people_n to_o repentance_n that_o they_o may_v be_v fit_a for_o mercy_n therefore_o this_o exhortation_n come_v in_o with_o the_o particle_n for_o or_o since_o it_o be_v so_o this_o be_v the_o thing_n i_o drive_v at_o seek_v i_o unless_o we_o fasten_v upon_o this_o we_o will_v either_o but_o despise_v threaten_n so_o long_o as_o we_o can_v or_o become_v heartless_a when_o be_v sensible_a of_o they_o 2._o as_o to_o enjoy_v god_n will_v be_v the_o chief_a desire_n and_o aim_v of_o penitent_n and_o not_o to_o be_v free_v from_o trouble_n only_o so_o however_o secure_v sinner_n glory_n much_o of_o their_o enjoy_n of_o god_n yet_o when_o trouble_n be_v bless_v to_o set_v they_o on_o work_n they_o will_v find_v their_o mistake_n and_o see_v that_o he_o be_v depart_v in_o both_o these_o respect_n be_v they_o direct_v to_o seek_v god_n as_o their_o chief_a desire_n and_o he_o who_o they_o have_v lose_v in_o their_o security_n 3._o albeit_o sensible_a soul_n find_v the_o lord_n absent_a from_o they_o through_o their_o own_o default_n yet_o that_o shall_v not_o deter_v they_o from_o seek_v and_o pursue_v after_o he_o again_o for_o to_o such_o be_v the_o command_n seek_v you_o i_o to_o be_v make_v sensible_a of_o a_o distance_n and_o of_o absence_n be_v a_o great_a token_n for_o good_a then_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v crush_v by_o such_o discouragement_n 4._o albeit_o also_o such_o as_o find_v a_o distance_n and_o be_v seek_v to_o make_v it_o up_o may_v possible_o for_o their_o further_a exercise_n not_o seem_v to_o come_v speed_n at_o first_o yet_o that_o shall_v not_o weaken_v their_o hand_n nor_o will_v they_o be_v account_v less_o penitent_a or_o be_v further_o from_o acceptance_n that_o they_o be_v but_o pursuer_n and_o not_o enjoyer_n for_o approven_v repentance_n here_o be_v not_o to_o find_v god_n but_o to_o seek_v god_n and_o these_o get_v the_o promise_n seek_v you_o i_o and_o you_o shall_v live_v 5._o albeit_o satan_n lie_v many_o impediment_n in_o a_o penitent_n way_n sometime_o by_o assault_v he_o with_o fit_n of_o security_n sometime_o represent_v god_n so_o unto_o he_o as_o he_o dare_v not_o approach_v sometime_o suggest_v that_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n for_o he_o and_o sometime_o discourage_v he_o that_o his_o former_a endeavour_n seem_v to_o have_v be_v in_o vain_a yet_o this_o may_v resolve_v the_o doubt_n of_o most_o desperate_a sinner_n that_o even_o they_o be_v command_v to_o come_v to_o god_n and_o that_o by_o he_o who_o power_n may_v terrify_v and_o who_o sufficiency_n may_v encourage_v and_o at_o who_o command_n we_o may_v let_v down_o the_o net_n therefore_o be_v the_o exhortation_n thus_o press_v thus_o say_v the_o lord_n unto_o the_o house_n of_o israel_n as_o bad_a as_o they_o be_v seek_v you_o i_o see_v isa_n 45.19_o 6._o a_o penitent_a seeker_n of_o god_n will_v not_o only_o mind_v the_o command_n of_o god_n but_o will_v eye_v the_o encouragement_n also_o and_o join_v the_o gospel_n with_o far_o as_o be_v for_o their_o good_a and_o to_o have_v their_o lot_n whatever_o it_o be_v make_v comfortable_a for_o this_o promise_n you_o shall_v live_v albeit_o it_o hold_v not_o out_o such_o temporal_a favour_n to_o every_o penitent_a as_o it_o do_v to_o israel_n yet_o it_o hold_v out_o so_o much_o as_o be_v contain_v in_o the_o doctrine_n to_o every_o penitent_a from_o v._o 5._o learn_v 1._o the_o right_a and_o acceptable_a way_n of_o seek_v god_n be_v a_o old_a controversy_n in_o the_o church_n and_o a_o controversy_n which_o god_n only_o by_o his_o word_n must_v resolve_v and_o determine_v therefore_o do_v he_o add_v this_o direction_n how_o to_o seek_v he_o 2._o the_o follow_v of_o idol_n and_o their_o service_n and_o the_o worship_v of_o god_n in_o and_o by_o they_o will_v prove_v but_o a_o poor_a shift_n in_o trouble_n and_o be_v a_o service_n which_o he_o will_v not_o accept_v nor_o approve_v of_o as_o right_o seek_v of_o he_o therefore_o whereas_o they_o may_v be_v ready_a if_o they_o do_v any_o thing_n upon_o such_o a_o invitation_n to_o run_v to_o the_o worship_n of_o the_o calf_n the_o lord_n express_o prohibit_v they_o if_o they_o will_v approve_v themselves_o as_o seeker_n of_o he_o but_o seek_v not_o bethel_n nor_o enter_v into_o gilgal_n and_o pass_v not_o into_o beersheha_n these_o place_n have_v be_v often_o speak_v of_o in_o hosea_n only_a beersheba_n be_v here_o first_o name_v in_o these_o prophet_n which_o it_o seem_v they_o also_o frequent_v for_o idolatrous_a worship_n because_o abraham_n and_o isaac_n have_v dwell_v often_o
of_o their_o daily_a fault_n of_o ignorance_n and_o infirmity_n for_o so_o under_o the_o law_n they_o have_v trespass-offering_n and_o sin-offering_n beside_o their_o burnt-offering_n so_o man_n that_o make_v right_a use_n of_o christ_n to_o expiate_v particular_a guiltiness_n will_v be_v lead_v by_o their_o fall_v therein_o to_o study_v yet_o more_o the_o corruption_n of_o their_o nature_n and_o general_a pollution_n and_o to_o flee_v to_o christ_n that_o the_o evidence_n of_o their_o reconciliation_n may_v be_v make_v clear_a unto_o they_o after_o such_o a_o cloud_n upon_o they_o so_o much_o do_v the_o join_n of_o offering_n for_o particular_a sin_n with_o the_o burnt-offering_n teach_v three_o their_o meat-offering_n of_o which_o leu._n 2._o and_o the_o peace-offering_n of_o and_o ordinary_a and_o therefore_o little_o think_v of_o yet_o they_o be_v in_o themselves_o great_a and_o more_o needful_a than_o many_o mercy_n with_o the_o want_n or_o enjoyment_n whereof_o we_o world_n full_a of_o dreadful_a fight_n of_o blood_n fire_n and_o darkness_n and_o neither_o sun_n or_o moon_n afford_v wont_a light_n or_o comfort_n to_o dip_v further_o into_o what_o may_v be_v connceive_v to_o be_v figurative_o point_v at_o under_o every_o one_o of_o these_o i_o conceive_v be_v not_o very_o safe_a doct._n 1._o whatever_o breathe_v time_n god_n may_v allow_v upon_o his_o gospel-church_n yet_o it_o be_v her_o duty_n to_o look_v for_o commotion_n and_o trouble_n especial_o after_o time_n of_o pour_v out_o of_o the_o spirit_n and_o time_n of_o much_o light_n and_o reformation_n for_o upon_o the_o one_o hand_n satan_n will_v bend_v all_o his_o power_n to_o oppose_v the_o progress_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o will_v set_v the_o world_n in_o opposition_n to_o the_o church_n and_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n god_n will_v pour_v out_o all_o sort_n of_o calamity_n upon_o the_o visible_a church_n to_o punish_v they_o who_o contemn_v his_o rich_a offer_n and_o do_v not_o walk_v answerable_o to_o such_o dispensation_n and_o to_o try_v the_o grace_n of_o his_o own_o that_o they_o may_v aspire_v towards_o spiritual_a happiness_n in_o heaven_n and_o he_o will_v punish_v secret_a and_o open_a enemy_n for_o the_o injury_n they_o do_v to_o the_o church_n for_o these_o cause_n be_v this_o prediction_n subjoin_v to_o the_o former_a promise_n 2._o it_o be_v the_o church_n duty_n not_o only_o to_o look_v for_o trouble_n but_o to_o expect_v that_o they_o will_v be_v great_a and_o very_o dreadful_a such_o as_o may_v testify_v the_o greatness_n of_o god_n displeasure_n against_o sin_n and_o of_o man_n fury_n against_o the_o church_n such_o as_o may_v thorough_o try_v the_o godly_a and_o bring_v about_o god_n deep_a counsel_n for_o there_o will_v be_v wonder_n in_o the_o heaven_n or_o the_o firmament_n and_o several_a region_n of_o the_o air_n and_o in_o the_o earth_n blood_n and_o fire_n etc._n etc._n 3._o whoever_o be_v employ_v in_o raise_v these_o great_a commotion_n and_o whatever_o be_v the_o design_n and_o malice_n of_o man_n in_o they_o yet_o it_o be_v the_o church_n good_a and_o safety_n to_o see_v a_o supreme_a hand_n of_o god_n in_o all_o of_o they_o for_o say_v he_o i_o will_v show_v wonder_n etc._n etc._n 4._o though_o the_o church_n in_o several_a age_n may_v get_v time_n of_o breathe_v and_o tranquillity_n yet_o these_o will_v not_o be_v permanent_a but_o interrupt_v with_o sad_a blast_n till_o the_o second_o come_v of_o christ_n which_o as_o it_o be_v certain_o approach_v so_o it_o will_v put_v a_o period_n to_o all_o storm_n wherewith_o the_o godly_a be_v toss_v for_o these_o thing_n will_v be_v before_o the_o great_a and_o terrible_a day_n of_o the_o lord_n come_v that_o be_v in_o all_o age_n till_o that_o time_n and_o belike_o very_o violent_o immediate_o before_o math._n 24.29_o 30._o 5._o the_o day_n of_o christ_n second_o come_v will_v be_v great_a and_o terrible_a and_o as_o it_o be_v act_v 2.20_o a_o notable_a or_o illustrious_a day_n a_o despise_a christ_n will_v be_v see_v great_a there_o great_a thing_n will_v be_v do_v in_o that_o day_n he_o will_v then_o reach_v his_o full_a and_o final_a end_n of_o all_o his_o work_n all_o thing_n will_v then_o be_v reveal_v and_o make_v patent_n the_o glory_n of_o god_n will_v be_v see_v face_n to_o face_n the_o secret_n of_o heart_n the_o glory_n of_o saint_n and_o the_o truth_n of_o promise_n and_o threaten_n will_v then_o be_v make_v manifest_a and_o though_o the_o godly_a will_n then_o be_v free_a of_o all_o terror_n yet_o it_o will_v be_v in_o itself_o a_o day_n of_o much_o state_n and_o majesty_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o of_o great_a
