stand_v before_o they_o we_o can_v come_v to_o christ_n because_o of_o his_o glory_n therefore_o know_v in_o the_o second_o place_n that_o as_o he_o be_v so_o glorious_a in_o himself_o the_o lustre_n of_o heaven_n so_o he_o have_v take_v our_o nature_n upon_o himself_o he_o have_v clothe_v himself_o with_o our_o nature_n and_o he_o be_v so_o unite_a into_o a_o hypostatical_a union_n with_o we_o to_o be_v make_v the_o same_o person_n yea_o so_o to_o be_v the_o same_o person_n that_o the_o second_o person_n in_o trinity_n be_v to_o be_v of_o the_o person_n that_o he_o be_v that_o the_o son_n of_o man_n shall_v be_v the_o same_o person_n that_o the_o son_n of_o god_n be_v this_o be_v the_o great_a mystery_n in_o the_o world_n and_o it_o be_v the_o great_a work_n that_o ever_o god_n do_v as_o poor_a wretched_a flesh_n may_v be_v able_a now_o to_o converse_v with_o god_n be_v veil_v with_o our_o own_o nature_n god_n be_v veil_v with_o flesh_n it_o be_v true_a if_o god_n in_o his_o own_o glory_n as_o he_o be_v in_o himself_o in_o the_o high_a heaven_n shall_v call_v we_o to_o come_v to_o he_o we_o may_v be_v afraid_a lest_o we_o shall_v be_v overwhelm_v with_o his_o glory_n we_o can_v stand_v before_o he_o we_o can_v look_v so_o much_o as_o upon_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o sin_n how_o shall_v we_o be_v able_a to_o go_v to_o the_o body_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n be_v we_o able_a to_o go_v to_o the_o body_n of_o the_o sun_n no_o it_o will_v burn_v we_o up_o how_o can_v we_o be_v able_a to_o go_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n then_o now_o because_o the_o lord_n know_v that_o his_o glory_n be_v so_o great_a he_o have_v be_v please_v to_o provide_v such_o a_o way_n to_o take_v off_o the_o terror_n of_o his_o greatness_n though_o we_o be_v frail_a flesh_n yet_o the_o lord_n have_v do_v that_o which_o may_v encourage_v we_o to_o come_v to_o he_o for_o he_o have_v veil_v his_o glory_n with_o human_a nature_n and_o therefore_o we_o may_v now_o through_o christ_n be_v able_a to_o stand_v before_o and_o converse_v with_o the_o infinite_a glorious_a god_n this_o be_v a_o great_a mystery_n the_o great_a that_o god_n have_v take_v our_o flesh_n upon_o he_o and_o veil_v his_o glory_n with_o our_o flesh_n that_o he_o may_v have_v his_o terror_n take_v from_o we_o and_o we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o come_v to_o he_o here_o be_v one_o special_a end_n that_o christ_n be_v gather_v this_o for_o thy_o encouragement_n that_o certain_o god_n be_v infinite_o incline_v to_o do_v good_a unto_o the_o child_n of_o man_n god_n will_v never_o have_v wrought_v so_o strange_a a_o work_n as_o to_o unite_v our_o nature_n into_o one_o person_n with_o his_o son_n if_o he_o have_v not_o mean_v to_o do_v some_o infinite_a good_a unto_o mankind_n the_o lord_n have_v give_v a_o most_o evident_a demonstration_n of_o it_o in_o unite_n man_v nature_n to_o his_o own_o son_n as_o if_o the_o king_n shall_v be_v please_v to_o marry_v his_o son_n to_o one_o that_o be_v the_o near_a kinswoman_n you_o have_v you_o will_v by_o that_o gather_v such_o a_o argument_n as_o this_o and_o all_o your_o friend_n will_v conclude_v sure_o the_o king_n do_v intend_v much_o good_a to_o this_o family_n that_o he_o be_v strong_o incline_v to_o prefer_v this_o family_n so_o when_o god_n be_v please_v to_o marry_v his_o son_n to_o our_o flesh_n yea_o to_o take_v our_o nature_n into_o a_o near_a union_n with_o he_o than_o the_o wife_n be_v take_v into_o the_o husband_n we_o may_v gather_v this_o argument_n and_o conclude_v sure_o god_n do_v intend_v much_o good_a unto_o the_o child_n of_o man_n and_o therefore_o come_v three_o from_o this_o consideration_n who_o christ_n be_v god_n manifest_v in_o the_o flesh_n we_o may_v gather_v this_o encouragement_n to_o come_v to_o he_o that_o the_o lord_n in_o unite_n the_o divine_a nature_n with_o the_o human_a in_o christ_n have_v do_v already_o a_o great_a work_n for_o the_o child_n of_o man_n than_o the_o save_n of_o their_o soul_n come_v to_o the_o save_n of_o thy_o soul_n be_v a_o difficult_a work_n thou_o think_v thus_o alas_o for_o i_o to_o come_v and_o think_v to_o be_v save_v by_o christ_n this_o be_v too_o great_a now_o this_o i_o may_v show_v you_o in_o abundance_n of_o scripture_n in_o the_o very_a first_o commission_n that_o jesus_n christ_n give_v unto_o his_o apostle_n after_o his_o resurrection_n to_o go_v and_o preach_v throughout_o the_o world_n he_o say_v unto_o they_o in_o mark_n 16.15_o verse_n go_v you_o into_o all_o the_o world_n and_o preach_v the_o gospel_n to_o every_o creature_n he_o that_o believe_v and_o be_v baptise_a shall_v be_v save_v this_o be_v clear_a that_o christ_n will_v have_v we_o in_o our_o first_o believe_v to_o have_v a_o aim_n at_o our_o own_o good_a and_o so_o we_o find_v such_o a_o kind_n of_o promise_n as_o this_o be_v in_o the_o text_n in_o jer._n 6.16_o verse_n thus_o say_v the_o lord_n stand_v in_o the_o way_n and_o see_v and_o ask_v for_o the_o old_a path_n where_o the_o good_a way_n be_v and_o walk_v therein_o and_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n for_o your_o soul_n inquire_v after_o the_o good_a way_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n for_o your_o soul_n so_o that_o you_o see_v god_n propound_v duty_n together_o with_o promise_n the_o lord_n know_v what_o be_v best_a for_o we_o and_o what_o will_v work_v most_o upon_o we_o and_o therefore_o for_o we_o to_o think_v that_o we_o must_v have_v no_o aim_n at_o all_o of_o any_o good_a to_o ourselves_o in_o come_v to_o christ_n and_o that_o it_o be_v no_o grace_n but_o self-love_n to_o come_v to_o christ_n for_o our_o own_o good_a this_o be_v a_o temptation_n i_o speak_v the_o rather_o this_o point_n because_o i_o know_v how_o useful_a it_o be_v unto_o many_o poor_a soul_n who_o the_o lord_n be_v draw_v unto_o jesus_n christ_n the_o lord_n have_v take_v off_o their_o heart_n from_o sinful_a self_n they_o will_v not_o enjoy_v themselves_o in_o the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n as_o former_o the_o lord_n have_v make_v they_o willing_a to_o deny_v their_o own_o opinion_n their_o own_o will_n their_o own_o affection_n their_o former_a way_n to_o deny_v themselves_o in_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n so_o as_o to_o prize_v he_o and_o christ_n and_o his_o way_n the_o way_n of_o christ_n more_o than_o they_o prize_v their_o very_a life_n here_o in_o this_o world_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o there_o come_v a_o temptation_n upon_o they_o i_o but_o you_o seek_v christ_n only_o to_o free_v you_o from_o hell_n and_o to_o save_v you_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v but_o self-love_n it_o be_v no_o true_a grace_n because_o that_o you_o aim_v at_o yourselves_o rather_o than_o christ_n the_o devil_n can_v prevail_v with_o a_o heart_n that_o be_v draw_v to_o christ_n thus_o tell_v of_o it_o oh_o but_o you_o prize_v your_o lust_n more_o than_o christ_n or_o you_o prize_v your_o ease_n more_o than_o christ_n or_o you_o prize_v your_o some_o measure_n be_v able_a to_o answer_v and_o to_o appeal_v unto_o god_n and_o say_v lord_n thou_o that_o know_v all_o thing_n know_v it_o be_v otherwise_o that_o howsoever_o my_o heart_n heretofore_o go_v after_o my_o lust_n after_o the_o world_n after_o my_o ease_n and_o liberty_n and_o i_o follow_v the_o common_a course_n of_o the_o world_n and_o make_v those_o thing_n to_o be_v be_v tender_v god_n himself_o say_v thus_o god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n that_o he_o send_v forth_o his_o only_a beget_v son_n that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o and_o so_o they_o go_v under_o this_o burden_n of_o fear_n along_o time_n together_o even_o those_o that_o be_v true_o godly_a the_o four_o burden_n of_o corruption_n four_o the_o remain_a part_n of_o corruption_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o saint_n be_v a_o burden_n of_o care_n for_o man_n and_o woman_n to_o be_v always_o careful_a to_o be_v full_a of_o care_n you_o know_v that_o be_v a_o great_a burden_n that_o many_o of_o you_o be_v acquaint_v with_o that_o when_o you_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o business_n upon_o you_o and_o much_o lie_v upon_o you_o when_o your_o thought_n be_v full_a of_o care_n be_v it_o not_o a_o great_a burden_n to_o you_o many_o man_n that_o have_v be_v full_a of_o business_n and_o afterward_o have_v get_v over_o their_o business_n what_o a_o freedom_n do_v they_o account_v it_o the_o saint_n they_o have_v a_o burden_n of_o care_n upon_o they_o because_o they_o find_v so_o much_o to_o do_v with_o their_o own_o heart_n that_o they_o have_v need_n be_v watchful_a night_n and_o day_n over_o they_o they_o have_v have_v experience_n what_o their_o heart_n have_v do_v when_o there_o have_v not_o be_v a_o strict_a watch_n over_o â—hem_n and_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o child_n of_o god_n but_o if_o he_o be_v in_o a_o right_a temper_n he_o be_v a_o careful_a man_n so_o long_o as_o we_o live_v in_o this_o flesh_n our_o condition_n be_v full_a of_o fear_n and_o so_o we_o must_v need_v be_v full_a of_o care_n in_o this_o world_n though_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n between_o the_o distract_n care_n that_o wicked_a man_n have_v about_o their_o outward_a estate_n and_o the_o care_n of_o the_o godly_a about_o keep_v their_o
burden_n to_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o heretofore_o have_v assurance_n of_o god_n love_n and_o be_v able_a to_o look_v in_o god_n face_n with_o joy_n to_o have_v this_o assurance_n shake_v yea_o many_o time_n it_o make_v god_n withdraw_v his_o countenance_n which_o make_v david_n cry_v out_o restore_v to_o i_o the_o joy_n of_o thy_o salvation_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v lord_n i_o be_v wont_a to_o have_v joy_n in_o thy_o company_n in_o communion_n with_o thou_o but_o thou_o have_v estrange_v thyself_o from_o my_o soul_n o_o lord_n restore_v unto_o i_o the_o joy_n of_o thy_o salvation_n now_o be_v not_o this_o a_o burden_n for_o thou_o to_o loose_v the_o sweetness_n of_o thy_o soul_n in_o communion_n with_o god_n that_o now_o though_o it_o may_v be_v it_o be_v through_o thy_o weakness_n or_o what_o it_o will_v be_v yet_o thou_o can_v not_o look_v upon_o god_n with_o that_o comfort_n as_o thou_o will_v but_o the_o thought_n of_o god_n come_v to_o be_v a_o terror_n upon_o thy_o spirit_n be_v not_o this_o a_o burden_n now_o then_o be_v there_o any_o poor_a soul_n that_o understand_v what_o these_o thing_n mean_v what_o a_o burden_n the_o remain_a corruption_n of_o the_o heart_n be_v either_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o sinfulness_n of_o nature_n or_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o stir_n of_o corruption_n or_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o prevail_a of_o corruption_n that_o now_o they_o have_v no_o rest_n in_o their_o soul_n but_o be_v lade_v with_o such_o a_o burden_n and_o cry_v out_o with_o the_o apostle_n oh_o wretched_a man_n and_o woman_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o let_v such_o a_o soul_n know_v that_o this_o text_n belong_v to_o they_o come_v unto_o i_o say_v christ_n and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v from_o this_o burden_n as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o burden_n and_o our_o rest_n be_v only_o in_o christ_n from_o this_o as_o well_o as_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o other_o burden_n that_o have_v be_v speak_v unto_o chap._n xvi_o why_o the_o saint_n feel_v these_o thing_n so_o burdensome_a namely_o 1._o because_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n be_v a_o tender_a and_o delicate_a thing_n 2._o because_o grace_n keep_v the_o soul_n in_o continual_a act_n and_o why_o god_n suffer_v corruption_n notwithstanding_o the_o burdensomness_n thereof_o to_o remain_v in_o the_o saint_n namely_o 1._o that_o hereby_o he_o may_v show_v forth_o his_o own_o power_n 2._o hereby_o their_o faith_n be_v exercise_v 3._o hereby_o they_o be_v drive_v unto_o prayer_n 4._o hereby_o stir_v up_o unto_o repentance_n 5._o hereby_o make_v know_v his_o wisdom_n 6._o hereby_o manifest_v his_o justice_n in_o lay_v a_o stumble_a block_n before_o the_o wicked_a 7._o hereby_o the_o saint_n may_v be_v induce_v to_o long_o more_o after_o heaven_n with_o two_o consequence_n issue_v from_o hence_o 1._o the_o difference_n between_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o godly_a and_o the_o wicked_a 2._o why_o the_o saint_n go_v on_o so_o sad_o in_o their_o way_n now_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o a_o gracious_a heart_n must_v feel_v these_o thing_n to_o be_v very_o burdensome_a first_o because_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n wheresoever_o it_o be_v be_v a_o very_a tender_a and_o delicate_a thing_n nothing_o be_v so_o delicate_a and_o tender_a as_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n and_o therefore_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v sensible_a of_o this_o burden_n of_o corruption_n according_a to_o what_o degree_n it_o do_v remain_v in_o the_o soul_n as_o thus_o you_o know_v a_o man_n or_o woman_n the_o more_o delicate_a and_o tender_a they_o be_v in_o their_o flesh_n have_v have_v very_o curious_a bring_v up_o or_o it_o may_v be_v their_o natural_a spirit_n be_v very_o delicate_a more_o than_o other_o man_n some_o man_n their_o natural_a spirit_n be_v more_o gross_a and_o can_v bear_v burden_n with_o less_o sense_n but_o now_o those_o that_o be_v more_o fine_a and_o delicate_a if_o you_o lay_v a_o burden_n upon_o they_o oh_o how_o burdensome_a be_v it_o unto_o they_o now_o grace_n make_v the_o constitution_n to_o be_v delicate_a fine_a and_o pure_a a_o pure_a constitution_n it_o put_v the_o heart_n into_o a_o most_o pure_a constitution_n and_o therefore_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n according_a to_o the_o remainer_n of_o it_o second_o where_o grace_n be_v corruption_n must_v needs_o be_v very_o burdensome_a in_o this_o regard_n also_o because_o that_o grace_n keep_v the_o soul_n in_o continual_a action_n and_o stir_v now_o look_v as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o leg_n that_o be_v break_v if_o he_o can_v lie_v still_o and_o never_o stir_v it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o grievous_a and_o burdensome_a to_o he_o the_o pain_n and_o break_n of_o his_o leg_n will_v not_o be_v so_o burdensome_a if_o he_o can_v lie_v still_o but_o if_o this_o man_n who_o leg_n be_v break_v must_v be_v stir_v walk_a and_o go_v up_o and_o down_o oh_o how_o burdensome_a be_v it_o that_o his_o leg_n be_v break_v so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v true_a if_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v still_o a_o sleep_n and_o do_v nothing_o then_o though_o there_o be_v corruption_n in_o they_o it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o grievous_a i_o but_o grace_n wherever_o it_o be_v put_v the_o soul_n unto_o action_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v call_v the_o divine_a nature_n because_o it_o be_v active_a it_o put_v the_o soul_n on_o to_o be_v act_v for_o god_n and_o in_o the_o way_n of_o life_n now_o grace_n put_v the_o soul_n to_o be_v act_v and_o corruption_n that_o be_v as_o the_o break_n of_o the_o bone_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v very_o burdensome_a that_o which_o most_o hinder_v their_o activity_n of_o grace_n must_v needs_o be_v very_o burdensome_a you_o have_v need_v therefore_o take_v heed_n what_o you_o do_v when_o temptation_n to_o sin_n come_v take_v heed_n you_o do_v not_o break_v your_o bone_n and_o your_o leg_n why_o because_o when_o you_o have_v break_v they_o you_o must_v be_v still_o stir_v and_o act_v for_o god_n a_o poor_a man_n it_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n worse_o for_o he_o if_o he_o break_v his_o leg_n than_o a_o rich_a man_n a_o rich_a man_n may_v sit_v by_o the_o fire_n or_o lie_v in_o his_o bed_n a_o month_n together_o but_o a_o poor_a man_n if_o he_o break_v his_o leg_n he_o do_v not_o know_v what_o to_o do_v he_o must_v to_o work_n perhaps_o he_o can_v have_v that_o harbour_n that_o a_o rich_a man_n may_v have_v so_o i_o say_v those_o that_o be_v of_o sluggish_a spirit_n though_o corruption_n prevail_v it_o be_v not_o so_o grievous_a unto_o they_o but_o those_o that_o be_v of_o active_a spirit_n and_o have_v grace_n and_o the_o more_o grace_n that_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n have_v the_o more_o burdensome_a their_o corruption_n be_v because_o the_o more_o grace_n there_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n the_o more_o active_a it_o will_v be_v for_o god_n quest_n but_o you_o will_v say_v see_v the_o remain_v of_o corruption_n in_o the_o heurt_n of_o the_o saint_n be_v so_o burdensome_a why_o do_v god_n so_o order_v thing_n in_o his_o providence_n as_o his_o own_o dear_a saint_n shall_v be_v so_o trouble_v with_o their_o corruption_n while_o they_o live_v in_o this_o world_n god_n can_v deliver_v they_o from_o their_o corruption_n why_o will_v god_n make_v they_o cry_v out_o o_o wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o death_n god_n can_v as_o well_o perfect_a our_o sanctification_n as_o our_o justification_n why_o do_v god_n thus_o order_v thing_n in_o his_o providence_n that_o his_o own_o dear_a saint_n shall_v groan_v under_o such_o a_o burden_n of_o corruption_n all_o their_o day_n answ_n for_o that_o brief_o thus_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o god_n can_v present_o take_v all_o our_o corruption_n as_o soon_o as_o ever_o we_o come_v to_o jesus_n christ_n god_n can_v deliver_v we_o from_o our_o corruption_n but_o the_o lord_n will_v not_o he_o have_v many_o holy_a end_n why_o he_o do_v suffer_v his_o own_o people_n to_o be_v under_o this_o burden_n while_o they_o live_v here_o in_o the_o flesh_n as._n first_o that_o hereby_o he_o may_v show_v forth_o his_o own_o power_n the_o power_n of_o jesus_n christ_n be_v exceed_v magnify_v in_o this_o that_o it_o can_v uphold_v little_a spark_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o ocean_n of_o corruption_n that_o it_o can_v uphold_v poor_a weak_a creature_n under_o such_o burden_n and_o carry_v they_o on_o notwithstanding_o and_o bring_v they_o to_o eternal_a life_n the_o power_n and_o grace_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o power_n of_o god_n be_v as_o much_o manifest_v in_o this_o thing_n as_o it_o be_v in_o keep_v heaven_n
acknowledge_v that_o it_o be_v through_o grace_n that_o he_o have_v but_o somewhat_o which_o god_n work_v through_o he_o that_o be_v the_o most_o natural_a to_o a_o rational_a creature_n to_o rest_v upon_o somewhat_o that_o he_o do_v to_o make_v up_o his_o peace_n with_o god_n and_o to_o be_v his_o righteousness_n before_o god_n and_o it_o be_v a_o mighty_a work_n of_o god_n to_o beat_v off_o the_o heart_n from_o this_o especial_o the_o heart_n come_v thus_o far_o to_o say_v it_o be_v true_a i_o can_v do_v nothing_o of_o myself_o but_o it_o be_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o i_o do_v all_o now_o for_o the_o heart_n not_o to_o rest_v upon_o this_o as_o its_o own_o righteousness_n this_o be_v the_o hard_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n and_o although_o man_n may_v be_v convince_v in_o their_o judgement_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o rest_v in_o any_o such_o thing_n but_o go_v out_o of_o themselves_o to_o another_o principle_n yet_o it_o be_v the_o hard_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v off_o from_o it_o and_o it_o be_v that_o make_v the_o work_n of_o faith_n the_o most_o difficult_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n because_o it_o carry_v the_o soul_n out_o of_o itself_o from_o its_o own_o bottom_n from_o its_o own_o principle_n and_o the_o mistake_n of_o this_o thing_n be_v that_o that_o be_v the_o undo_n of_o thousand_o of_o those_o that_o live_v under_o the_o sound_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o when_o they_o have_v somewhat_o reform_v their_o life_n and_o think_v they_o be_v able_a to_o do_v thus_o and_o thus_o yet_o here_o they_o rest_n and_o go_v not_o out_o of_o themselves_o to_o look_v for_o rest_n out_o of_o themselves_o and_o do_v not_o come_v to_o christ_n quest_n you_o will_v say_v what_o not_o rest_n upon_o what_o we_o do_v and_o be_v enable_v to_o do_v upon_o god_n grace_n faith_n itself_o be_v a_o rest_v upon_o christ_n ans_fw-fr no_o but_o this_o you_o must_v observe_v in_o your_o come_n you_o must_v not_o rest_v upon_o your_o come_n but_o upon_o christ_n that_o you_o come_v unto_o for_o their_o may_v be_v a_o deceit_n in_o that_o too_o there_o be_v some_o that_o rest_n upon_o work_n of_o humiliation_n mourn_v for_o sin_n reform_v their_o life_n and_o they_o think_v that_o be_v their_o rest_n and_o peace_n other_o go_v further_o and_o think_v they_o must_v believe_v in_o christ_n but_o they_o will_v rest_v upon_o their_o believe_a so_o they_o rest_v upon_o their_o come_n and_o not_o upon_o the_o object_n that_o they_o come_v unto_o but_o we_o must_v be_v take_v off_o from_o rest_v upon_o our_o come_n upon_o our_o very_a believe_a and_o christ_n must_v be_v all_o in_o all_o to_o have_v true_a rest_n in_o therefore_o faith_n be_v a_o supernatural_a grace_n because_o by_o that_o we_o be_v take_v off_o from_o what_o we_o be_v in_o ourselves_o and_o carry_v on_o to_o somewhat_o else_o 6._o upon_o this_o follow_v likewise_o that_o faith_n be_v a_o humble_v grace_n it_o be_v that_o that_o must_v needs_o humble_a the_o soul_n where_o it_o be_v for_o indeed_o it_o be_v the_o great_a self_n denial_n in_o the_o world_n for_o a_o creature_n to_o come_v to_o be_v willing_a to_o rely_v upon_o free_a grace_n for_o the_o soul_n to_o be_v so_o empty_v of_o itself_o as_o to_o acknowledge_v there_o be_v no_o worthiness_n no_o good_a at_o all_o in_o itself_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v content_a to_o live_v eternal_o upon_o mere_a alm_n and_o to_o give_v god_n the_o glory_n of_o al._n be_v there_o any_o thing_n more_o hard_a to_o any_o of_o you_o then_o to_o live_v to_o be_v beggar_n all_o your_o day_n to_o be_v behold_v to_o other_o so_o as_o to_o live_v upon_o mere_a alm_n and_o nothing_o else_o all_o the_o day_n of_o your_o life_n now_o for_o the_o creature_n to_o be_v so_o empty_v of_o itself_o as_o to_o live_v upon_o mere_a alm_n to_o all_o eternity_n upon_o nothing_o but_o mere_a free_a grace_n and_o upon_o a_o principle_n of_o life_n without_o ourselves_o this_o be_v a_o mighty_a work_n of_o empty_v of_o ourselves_o and_o of_o self_n denial_n and_o therefore_o in_o rom._n 10.3_o it_o be_v speak_v of_o the_o jew_n for_o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n righteousness_n and_o go_v about_o to_o establish_v their_o own_o righteousness_n have_v not_o submit_v themselves_o to_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n this_o plain_o show_v that_o the_o bring_v the_o heart_n to_o rest_v upon_o the_o righteousness_n that_o be_v of_o god_n by_o faith_n for_o that_o be_v mean_v here_o require_v a_o submission_n of_o the_o heart_n a_o lay_v down_o the_o heart_n and_o a_o humble_v of_o the_o heart_n and_o indeed_o this_o be_v the_o very_a ground_n why_o the_o lord_n do_v so_o humble_a the_o spirit_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n when_o he_o bring_v they_o to_o christ_n because_o that_o the_o lord_n know_v that_o the_o very_a act_n the_o come_n to_o christ_n be_v a_o act_n of_o the_o great_a self_n denial_n in_o the_o world_n because_o the_o heart_n must_v be_v empty_v of_o itself_o in_o that_o that_o be_v so_o much_o against_o the_o pride_n of_o man_n heart_n to_o live_v eternal_o upon_o mere_a free_a grace_n and_o nothing_o else_o for_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o man_n do_v more_o desire_n then_o to_o have_v somewhat_o some_o stock_n of_o himself_o to_o live_v upon_o and_o indeed_o herein_o man_n come_v to_o be_v more_o humble_a than_o adam_n in_o innocency_n can_v be_v for_o adam_n have_v a_o stock_n to_o live_v upon_o in_o his_o own_o hand_n to_o live_v upon_o in_o himself_o not_o but_o god_n be_v the_o principle_n of_o it_o but_o then_o god_n give_v it_o he_o to_o live_v upon_o the_o stock_n of_o grace_n he_o have_v in_o his_o own_o hand_n but_o now_o in_o the_o second_o adam_n the_o way_n of_o god_n towards_o we_o be_v otherwise_o the_o second_o adam_n keep_v the_o stock_n of_o life_n and_o grace_n upon_o which_o our_o soul_n must_v live_v eternal_o in_o his_o own_o hand_n i_o say_v they_o be_v in_o christ_n hand_n not_o in_o ourselves_o and_o therefore_o our_o life_n be_v a_o better_a and_o safe_a life_n then_o that_o be_v and_o thereby_o we_o can_v fall_v from_o god_n because_o we_o live_v by_o the_o principle_n of_o life_n that_o be_v in_o he_o it_o be_v a_o great_a mystery_n and_o almost_o impossible_a to_o unfold_v only_o some_o glimmer_n we_o have_v in_o the_o word_n that_o this_o be_v so_o 7._o if_o there_o be_v nothing_o require_v but_o to_o come_v than_o another_o consequence_n will_v follow_v from_o hence_o and_o that_o be_v this_o hence_o then_o believer_n that_o come_v to_o christ_n may_v learn_v this_o lesson_n to_o be_v willing_a to_o do_v and_o to_o suffer_v very_o much_o for_o christ_n after_o they_o come_v because_o there_o be_v nothing_o require_v of_o they_o to_o the_o pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n but_o only_o to_o come_v i_o strengthen_v the_o inference_n thus_o if_o god_n have_v say_v thus_o indeed_o i_o have_v send_v a_o mediator_n to_o pacify_v my_o wrath_n and_o to_o pardon_v your_o sin_n and_o before_o you_o come_v to_o rest_n i_o require_v that_o you_o shall_v suffer_v so_o many_o hundred_o year_n of_o torment_n in_o fire_n and_o that_o shall_v be_v a_o preparation_n to_o come_v and_o then_o after_o you_o have_v suffer_v so_o much_o than_o you_o shall_v come_v and_o have_v rest_n suppose_v this_o have_v be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n now_o have_v it_o be_v so_o we_o have_v all_o have_v cause_n to_o have_v fall_v upon_o our_o face_n and_o have_v blessed_v his_o great_a name_n that_o we_o can_v have_v peace_n on_o any_o term_n and_o we_o shall_v have_v be_v not_o only_o willing_a to_o accept_v of_o these_o term_n but_o to_o magnify_v god_n grace_n that_o we_o can_v be_v thus_o save_v at_o last_o but_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o require_v that_o first_o we_o shall_v suffer_v such_o and_o such_o hard_a thing_n and_o then_o come_v to_o christ_n but_o he_o call_v upon_o we_o first_o to_o come_v and_o require_v nothing_o before_o and_o therefore_o before_o we_o be_v able_a to_o do_v the_o lord_n any_o service_n the_o lord_n will_v first_o accept_v of_o we_o and_o pardon_v we_o and_o heal_v we_o and_o interest_n we_o in_o himself_o and_o be_v our_o god_n and_o take_v we_o to_o be_v his_o child_n and_o make_v we_o heir_n of_o heaven_n and_o eternal_a life_n &_o this_o at_o first_o before_o we_o shall_v ever_o be_v able_a to_o do_v he_o any_o service_n what_o a_o infinite_a grace_n of_o god_n be_v this_o how_o be_v he_o beforehand_o with_o we_o for_o he_o call_v to_o the_o great_a sinner_n that_o know_v what_o his_o sin_n be_v and_o be_v lade_v say_v god_n i_o require_v nothing_o before_o the_o receive_n you_o to_o mercy_n but_o mere_o to_o

require_v and_o say_v i_o but_o you_o shall_v live_v so_o many_o year_n to_o my_o honour_n live_v so_o many_o year_n to_o my_o service_n and_o then_o i_o will_v pardon_v and_o accept_v of_o you_o no_o but_o say_v god_n i_o will_v receive_v you_o and_o accept_v of_o you_o upon_o your_o come_n before_o ever_o you_o be_v able_a to_o do_v i_o any_o kind_n of_o service_n no_o say_v god_n come_v to_o i_o and_o you_o shall_v have_v first_o my_o favour_n and_o you_o shall_v be_v first_o accept_v and_o first_o pardon_v and_o then_o indeed_o i_o expect_v service_n from_o you_o than_o i_o expect_v that_o you_o shall_v live_v as_o the_o redeem_v one_o of_o the_o lord_n and_o all_o that_o you_o shall_v do_v afterward_o shall_v be_v but_o in_o way_n of_o thankfulness_n to_o i_o for_o my_o grace_n and_o indeed_o thus_o do_v believer_n live_v in_o the_o world_n though_o they_o look_v upon_o what_o they_o do_v in_o a_o way_n of_o duty_n but_o they_o do_v it_o in_o a_o way_n of_o thankfulness_n that_o be_v the_o special_a thing_n that_o carry_v they_o on_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o his_o son_n and_o that_o be_v a_o strong_a argument_n to_o all_o kind_n of_o duty_n that_o now_o god_n require_v of_o they_o than_o what_o they_o have_v before_o god_n do_v not_o call_v upon_o you_o to_o suffer_v first_o and_o then_o he_o will_v pardon_v your_o sin_n no_o but_o say_v god_n i_o will_v bestow_v so_o now_o when_o thou_o be_v a_o believer_n and_o have_v lose_v the_o assurance_n of_o christ_n love_n and_o the_o comfort_n of_o rest_n in_o christ_n now_o thou_o must_v go_v and_o take_v the_o christ_n do_v propound_v that_o which_o he_o know_v will_v take_v the_o heart_n of_o sinner_n as_o a_o great_a good_a unto_o they_o to_o draw_v they_o to_o himself_o hence_o i_o say_v the_o note_n it_o clear_v that_o in_o our_o come_n to_o jesus_n christ_n it_o be_v lawful_a for_o we_o to_o have_v some_o aim_n at_o our_o own_o good_a yea_o not_o only_o lawful_a for_o we_o but_o we_o ought_v so_o to_o do_v for_o we_o be_v to_o look_v upon_o christ_n so_o as_o christ_n propound_v himself_o unto_o we_o not_o only_o lawful_a i_o say_v to_o look_v upon_o christ_n so_o as_o he_o propound_v himself_o to_o we_o but_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n so_o to_o look_v upon_o he_o now_o when_o christ_n propound_v himself_o unto_o we_o as_o a_o object_n to_o draw_v our_o heart_n to_o he_o he_o do_v propound_v himself_o as_o one_o wherein_o our_o soul_n shall_v gain_v abundance_n of_o good_a one_o that_o we_o shall_v get_v much_o by_o now_o though_o it_o be_v true_a we_o shall_v labour_n to_o be_v above_o ourselves_o as_o much_o as_o may_v be_v we_o shall_v labour_n to_o deny_v ourselves_o in_o some_o sense_n yet_o not_o so_o but_o that_o we_o be_v to_o look_v at_o our_o own_o good_a even_o in_o our_o come_n unto_o jesus_n christ_n
of_o the_o covenant_n this_o may_v seem_v difficult_a to_o some_o and_o that_o be_v this_o that_o all_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o heaven_n can_v be_v sufficient_a for_o the_o rest_n of_o any_o soul_n but_o through_o a_o mediator_n in_o christ_n the_o soul_n must_v be_v bring_v to_o this_o mercy_n by_o the_o hand_n of_o christ_n the_o mediator_n thou_o must_v first_o come_v to_o christ_n the_o mediator_n before_o thou_o can_v have_v any_o rest_n even_o in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n itself_o you_o must_v know_v and_o if_o you_o know_v any_o thing_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n you_o must_v know_v this_o that_o though_o god_n be_v a_o infinite_a current_n of_o mercy_n yet_o all_o the_o current_n of_o god_n mercy_n be_v stop_v by_o man_n sin_n so_o as_o it_o can_v only_o be_v open_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o therefore_o thou_o must_v know_v god_n in_o christ_n and_o you_o must_v know_v how_o you_o come_v unto_o god_n in_o and_o through_o christ_n before_o you_o can_v rest_v upon_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n this_o be_v that_o which_o do_v undo_v many_o soul_n those_o that_o be_v of_o the_o better_a sort_n they_o think_v to_o rely_v upon_o god_n mercy_n think_v to_o rest_v in_o that_o and_o that_o be_v a_o sure_a rest_n to_o their_o soul_n but_o they_o little_o understand_v how_o all_o the_o current_n of_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n be_v stop_v and_o there_o be_v no_o come_n to_o it_o but_o by_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o mediator_n between_o god_n and_o man_n other_o they_o will_v say_v they_o do_v many_o good_a thing_n they_o do_v many_o good_a action_n they_o serve_v god_n and_o they_o rest_v in_o this_o they_o do_v not_o commit_v the_o gross_a sin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o they_o do_v perform_v duty_n they_o pray_v in_o their_o family_n and_o in_o their_o closert_n &_o this_o be_v that_o they_o rest_v in_o but_o the_o rest_n of_o a_o immortal_a soul_n must_v have_v a_o better_a foundation_n than_o this_o than_o all_o the_o duty_n than_o all_o the_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n than_o all_o that_o god_n himself_o work_v in_o they_o it_o must_v be_v somewhat_o without_o they_o that_o must_v be_v rest_n to_o their_o soul_n and_o nothing_o wrought_v in_o we_o no_o not_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o we_o can_v be_v rest_n to_o our_o soul_n it_o must_v be_v the_o perfect_a righteousness_n of_o a_o mediator_n though_o it_o be_v wrought_v in_o we_o by_o faith_n can_v be_v rest_n to_o our_o soul_n yet_o nothing_o in_o we_o so_o that_o you_o may_v mistake_v and_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o formal_a manner_n but_o suppose_v you_o perform_v they_o in_o a_o gracious_a manner_n yet_o you_o must_v not_o rest_v in_o they_o you_o must_v go_v high_a than_o all_o the_o best_a duty_n that_o ever_o you_o perform_v wo_n to_o abraham_n isaac_n and_o jacob_n if_o they_o have_v no_o other_o rest_n but_o what_o their_o duty_n bring_v they_o you_o must_v look_v high_a than_o whatever_o you_o be_v or_o can_v be_v enable_v to_o do_v for_o your_o rest_n you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v there_o that_o can_v be_v high_o than_o what_o we_o be_v enable_v to_o do_v by_o god_n there_o be_v a_o righteousness_n in_o jesus_n christ_n by_o which_o you_o must_v come_v there_o be_v a_o insufficiency_n in_o all_o the_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n to_o give_v rest_n and_o yet_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o world_n make_v all_o their_o rest_n in_o these_o thing_n much_o may_v be_v speak_v concern_v the_o danger_n of_o this_o and_o much_o of_o the_o sign_n when_o our_o soul_n have_v true_a rest_n in_o christ_n but_o we_o shall_v meet_v with_o that_o in_o the_o other_o point_n in_o handle_v the_o rest_n that_o we_o have_v in_o christ_n i_o will_v therefore_o pass_v over_o this_o about_o the_o insufficiency_n of_o the_o rest_n in_o all_o other_o thing_n only_o with_o this_o one_o thing_n know_v this_o that_o that_o heart_n that_o be_v touch_v with_o jesus_n christ_n as_o the_o iron_n be_v with_o the_o loadstone_n can_v never_o be_v quiet_a either_o in_o creature_n comfort_n or_o in_o hope_n of_o mercy_n or_o in_o any_o duty_n or_o performance_n it_o can_v never_o be_v quiet_a till_o it_o get_v union_n with_o jesus_n christ_n just_o as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o needle_n that_o be_v touch_v with_o a_o loadstone_n shake_v it_o which_o way_n you_o will_v it_o will_v never_o be_v at_o rest_n till_o it_o come_v to_o the_o north_n and_o when_o it_o get_v north_n than_o it_o stand_v there_o so_o it_o be_v with_o a_o heart_n that_o be_v touch_v with_o jesus_n christ_n there_o be_v the_o touch_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n upon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o believer_n and_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v but_o touch_v with_o jesus_n christ_n it_o shake_v be_v full_o of_o fear_n and_o doubt_n and_o offer_v it_o this_o creature_n comfort_n and_o the_o other_o creature_n comfort_n it_o will_v not_o do_v it_o the_o heart_n be_v not_o at_o rest_n but_o now_o when_o there_o but_o the_o gospel_n never_o command_v we_o to_o do_v any_o duty_n but_o there_o be_v a_o promise_n that_o engage_v the_o lord_n to_o help_v the_o soul_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o that_o duty_n and_o now_o be_v not_o here_o rest_n for_o the_o soul_n when_o the_o soul_n shall_v look_v upon_o the_o large_a extent_n of_o the_o duty_n that_o the_o law_n of_o god_n require_v of_o it_o the_o law_n require_v of_o i_o to_o love_v the_o lord_n with_o all_o my_o heart_n and_o with_o all_o my_o soul_n and_o with_o all_o my_o might_n and_o to_o keep_v his_o commandment_n and_o statute_n and_o to_o compare_v the_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n unto_o the_o vein_n they_o be_v these_o duty_n require_v of_o thou_o in_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o thy_o life_n but_o if_o thou_o have_v vein_n of_o blood_n and_o have_v no_o artery_n no_o spirit_n thou_o will_v be_v but_o dull_a though_o the_o blood_n be_v full_a in_o the_o vein_n yet_o there_o will_v be_v little_a strength_n but_o now_o there_o be_v the_o spirit_n that_o go_v along_o in_o the_o artery_n that_o give_v life_n to_o the_o vein_n so_o now_o they_o that_o be_v under_o the_o law_n they_o know_v many_o duty_n that_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v i_o but_o except_o they_o have_v the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o go_v along_o with_o they_o they_o have_v little_a life_n little_a activity_n to_o do_v the_o duty_n therefore_o christian_n when_o you_o hear_v any_o duty_n out_o of_o god_n word_n that_o you_o ought_v to_o perform_v consider_v here_o be_v the_o duty_n here_o be_v the_o vein_n i_o but_o where_o be_v the_o thing_n make_v the_o life_n of_o many_o people_n to_o be_v very_o disconsolate_a and_o make_v they_o go_v on_o deadly_a and_o dull_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n whereas_o if_o they_o will_v make_v use_n of_o this_o one_o thing_n when_o they_o be_v put_v upon_o any_o duty_n to_o search_v and_o find_v out_o in_o the_o word_n the_o promise_n wherein_o god_n enable_v we_o to_o do_v the_o duty_n and_o plead_v the_o promise_n and_o say_v lord_n thou_o require_v the_o performance_n of_o this_o duty_n but_o thou_o have_v promise_v to_o enable_v i_o to_o do_v it_o i_o say_v if_o thou_o will_v do_v thus_o thou_o will_v find_v that_o thy_o duty_n will_v not_o be_v burdensome_a to_o thou_o but_o thou_o will_v say_v well_o i_o see_v my_o soul_n have_v rest_n in_o christ_n in_o the_o conditional_a promise_n and_o here_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n the_o law_n require_v and_o do_v not_o give_v strength_n to_o enable_v to_o do_v what_o it_o
