and_o commendation_n of_o faith_n that_o it_o look_v only_o towards_o the_o healthful_a and_o comfortable_a mountain_n which_o be_v in_o jerusalem_n &_o refuse_v the_o succour_n of_o all_o other_o mountain_n thus_o the_o prophet_n cast_v his_o eye_n aside_o as_o it_o be_v upon_o the_o wicked_a who_o forsake_v the_o help_n of_o the_o lord_n mercy_n and_o goodness_n which_o be_v then_o in_o jerusalem_n seek_v relief_n and_o succour_n in_o other_o mountain_n in_o like_a manner_n in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o romish_a antichrist_n there_o be_v infinite_a feet_n and_o swarm_n of_o monk_n and_o other_o superstitious_a votary_n some_o hold_v of_o augustine_n some_o of_o benedict_n some_o of_o francisce_n etc_n etc_n which_o by_o their_o vow_n and_o monastical_a life_n think_v to_o obtain_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n hope_v also_o by_o these_o comfort_n to_o overcome_v the_o terror_n of_o god_n wrath_n &_o heal_v the_o wound_n of_o conscience_n and_o this_o be_v always_o the_o inclination_n of_o man_n nature_n to_o follow_v his_o own_o way_n and_o to_o forsake_v the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n therefore_o david_n say_v some_o forsake_v the_o temple_n &_o abhor_v the_o mount_n zion_n but_o i_o abide_v in_o the_o simple_a way_n of_o faith_n &_o true_a religion_n which_o be_v the_o healthful_a hill_n that_o the_o lord_n himself_o have_v appoint_v in_o that_o he_o call_v it_o the_o healthful_a hill_n or_o the_o hill_n from_o whence_o help_n and_o succour_n come_v he_o reject_v and_o condemn_v all_o other_o hill_n which_o have_v a_o show_n of_o help_n and_o succour_v such_o i_o mean_v as_o be_v visible_o wrought_v in_o the_o service_n and_o honour_n do_v to_o the_o idol_n but_o true_a help_n they_o give_v none_o so_o the_o jew_n say_v that_o baal_n show_v more_o present_a help_n in_o the_o temple_n then_o god_n so_o they_o cry_v in_o jeremy_n we_o will_v do_v sacrifice_n to_o the_o queen_n of_o heaven_n but_o thy_o commandment_n we_o will_v not_o do_v for_o since_o we_o leave_v to_o do_v sacrifice_n to_o the_o queen_n of_o heaven_n the_o sword_n and_o famine_n have_v consume_v we_o and_o thus_o forsake_v the_o temple_n and_o the_o true_a worship_n of_o god_n they_o run_v headlong_o to_o all_o impiety_n but_o you_o will_v say_v why_o will_v god_n that_o idolatry_n shall_v have_v such_o success_n even_o to_o try_v our_o faith_n and_o whether_o we_o do_v true_o believe_v and_o worship_v one_o god_n according_a to_o that_o commandment_n thou_o shall_v have_v none_o other_o god_n etc_n etc_n true_a it_o be_v in_o deed_n that_o idolatry_n have_v great_a success_n time_n yet_o be_v it_o but_o for_o a_o time_n so_o say_v king_n achas_n the_o god_n of_o the_o king_n of_o the_o syrian_n do_v help_v they_o therefore_o will_v i_o also_o seek_v their_o favour_n and_o they_o shall_v help_v i_o but_o what_o say_v the_o scripture_n the_o god_n of_o syria_n be_v the_o destruction_n both_o of_o they_o and_o of_o all_o israel_n and_o this_o be_v the_o end_n of_o all_o such_o false_a trust_n so_o do_v mammon_n likewise_o help_v his_o worshipper_n for_o he_o be_v a_o great_a god_n and_o bring_v to_o they_o liberty_n joy_n and_o comfort_n he_o lift_v they_o up_o to_o wealth_n and_o dignity_n he_o make_v they_o to_o swell_v with_o pride_n and_o glory_n comfort_n but_o how_o long_o for_o the_o time_n of_o this_o frail_a &_o brickle_a life_n but_o in_o death_n he_o do_v not_o only_o forsake_v they_o but_o drive_v they_o down_o to_o the_o deep_a pit_n of_o hell_n therefore_o whatsoever_o worldly_a and_o visible_a comfort_n and_o delight_n the_o heart_n of_o man_n can_v here_o desire_v or_o enjoy_v he_o find_v they_o uncertain_a and_o short_o must_v forsake_v they_o and_o yet_o withal_o they_o bring_v unspeakable_a torment_n and_o affliction_n of_o mind_n and_o lead_v man_n into_o such_o blindness_n that_o they_o have_v no_o regard_n of_o god_n at_o all_o who_o do_v not_o delight_v his_o true_a worshipper_n with_o vain_a pleasure_n of_o this_o world_n which_o endure_v but_o a_o moment_n but_o replenish_v they_o with_o everlasting_a joy_n for_o thus_o he_o say_v i_o will_v see_v you_o again_o and_o your_o heart_n shall_v rejoice_v and_o your_o joy_n no_o man_n shall_v take_v from_o you_o let_v we_o learn_v therefore_o to_o cleave_v fast_o to_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n and_o those_o invisible_a comfort_n and_o if_o trouble_v come_v as_o we_o can_v not_o look_v to_o be_v without_o a_o cross_n if_o we_o seem_v to_o be_v desolate_a and_o destitute_a of_o all_o comfort_n yet_o god_n have_v a_o time_n when_o he_o will_v show_v himself_o to_o have_v a_o care_n of_o we_o and_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o the_o affliction_n of_o this_o life_n be_v not_o to_o be_v compare_v to_o the_o glory_n which_o shall_v be_v reveil_v on_o we_o as_o s._n paul_n comfort_v us._n this_o be_v then_o the_o sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o this_o verse_n that_o faith_n be_v a_o knowledge_n of_o thing_n invisible_a and_o yet_o to_o be_v look_v for_o lest_o we_o shall_v think_v it_o to_o be_v but_o a_o mere_a speculation_n as_o some_o do_v make_v it_o there_o be_v thing_n to_o be_v look_v for_o of_o the_o which_o we_o have_v experience_n in_o this_o life_n that_o be_v to_o say_v a_o good_a conscience_n a_o joyful_a heart_n a_o invincible_a faith_n which_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v against_o all_o storm_n of_o tentation_n against_o poverty_n envy_n reproach_n and_o slander_v of_o the_o world_n against_o error_n and_o false_a doctrine_n and_o even_o against_o death_n itself_o thus_o we_o must_v learn_v to_o know_v the_o nature_n of_o faith_n namely_o that_o it_o be_v a_o will_n or_o knowledge_n or_o a_o expectation_n rest_v upon_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o word_n show_v and_o set_v forth_o unto_o we_o invisible_a help_n and_o yet_o to_o be_v look_v for_o as_o certain_a and_o unfallible_a and_o although_o we_o think_v it_o long_o before_o they_o come_v yet_o will_v they_o come_v when_o it_o shall_v be_v most_o to_o our_o joy_n &_o comfort_n and_o this_o be_v it_o that_o these_o word_n of_o the_o prophet_n do_v here_o express_v i_o lift_v up_o my_o eye_n to_o the_o hill_n from_o whence_o my_o help_n come_v here_o he_o show_v himself_o to_o be_v destitute_a of_o help_n and_o succour_n and_o yet_o in_o sure_a hope_n and_o expectation_n thereof_o he_o look_v up_o unto_o those_o hill_n and_o hope_v for_o invisible_a comfort_n in_o like_a manner_n must_v we_o do_v also_o i_o be_o in_o distress_n or_o affliction_n of_o body_n or_o mind_n i_o be_o in_o necessity_n and_o can_v see_v no_o mean_n how_o to_o live_v how_o to_o maintain_v my_o family_n how_o to_o escape_v this_o danger_n or_o that_o here_o be_v the_o heart_n oftentimes_o oppress_v with_o sorrow_n and_o miserable_o vex_v as_o though_o there_o be_v no_o succour_n no_o comfort_n nor_o remedy_n to_o be_v find_v but_o here_o must_v we_o be_v certain_o persuade_v that_o there_o be_v help_v and_o succour_v prepare_v for_o we_o and_o the_o time_n thereof_o also_o appoint_v of_o god_n although_o we_o know_v not_o when_o it_o shall_v be_v but_o by_o this_o we_o may_v learn_v what_o a_o hard_a matter_n it_o be_v to_o believe_v when_o the_o heart_n must_v yield_v and_o consent_n to_o any_o thing_n contrary_a to_o that_o which_o both_o we_o see_v hear_v &_o feel_v i_o myself_o have_v be_v oftentimes_o in_o wonderful_a great_a danger_n when_o the_o whole_a world_n as_o it_o be_v conspire_v against_o i_o for_o the_o pope_n my_o mortal_a enemy_n and_o the_o enemy_n of_o my_o christ_n do_v not_o cease_v to_o stir_v up_o against_o i_o what_o power_n and_o terror_n so_o ever_o he_o be_v able_a to_o devise_v here_o reason_n will_v rather_o persuade_v i_o to_o keep_v silence_n and_o say_v nothing_o then_o to_o teach_v and_o bring_v myself_o thereby_o into_o trouble_n and_o danger_n lord_n for_o reason_n can_v never_o see_v the_o lord_n marvellous_a help_n and_o deliverance_n which_o be_v invisible_a and_o hide_a from_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o world_n therefore_o it_o think_v only_o of_o that_o which_o it_o see_v that_o be_v to_o say_v destruction_n in_o all_o these_o storm_n how_o my_o mind_n be_v establish_v in_o god_n what_o my_o faith_n and_o hope_n be_v i_o will_v here_o say_v nothing_o albeit_o in_o these_o great_a danger_n i_o grant_v my_o mind_n be_v oftentimes_o trouble_v and_o yet_o at_o the_o length_n the_o invisible_a help_n of_o god_n be_v hide_v from_o my_o eye_n and_o from_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n appear_v so_o that_o not_o only_o my_o deadly_a and_o mighty_a
upon_o we_o thus_o david_n under_o these_o word_n the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n comprehend_v god_n himself_o his_o name_n and_o his_o word_n whereunto_o the_o sabbath_n be_v dedicate_v in_o the_o which_o we_o shall_v rest_v from_o other_o business_n and_o harken_v unto_o the_o lord_n speak_v unto_o us._n lord_n this_o be_v to_o go_v into_o the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o for_o this_o he_o seek_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o blind_a and_o deceive_v the_o heart_n with_o falsehood_n and_o lie_n for_o whereas_o hard_a and_o stony_a heart_n be_v those_o he_o do_v not_o kill_v or_o man_n and_o the_o whole_a world_n but_o beside_o these_o give_v remission_n of_o sin_n faith_n righteousness_n joy_n &_o peace_n of_o heart_n with_o everlasting_a life_n he_o be_v say_v the_o thy_o wife_n thy_o child_n thou_o fall_v into_o sickness_n and_o infirmity_n of_o body_n thou_o lose_v thy_o good_n thine_o estimation_n the_o peace_n and_o tranquillity_n of_o conscience_n yea_o and_o some_o time_n according_a to_o thine_o own_o sense_n and_o feeling_n christ_n himself_o also_o these_o be_v great_a matter_n in_o deed_n but_o beware_v that_o while_o thou_o judge_v these_o thing_n after_o thine_o own_o sense_n thou_o make_v not_o of_o a_o drop_n a_o infinite_a sea_n and_o of_o a_o sparkle_n a_o flame_a fire_n though_o it_o be_v never_o so_o great_a which_o thou_o feel_v and_o suffer_v yet_o god_n be_v great_a if_o god_n and_o christ_n then_o perish_v not_o if_o they_o still_o live_v and_o reign_v what_o if_o thou_o lose_v thy_o wife_n thy_o child_n thy_o good_n yea_o and_o thy_o life_n also_o for_o what_o be_v all_o these_o if_o thou_o compare_v they_o to_o the_o inestimable_a grace_n of_o god_n and_o the_o riches_n which_o he_o have_v promise_v in_o his_o word_n but_o mere_a nothing_o therefore_o let_v we_o lift_v up_o our_o mind_n to_o these_o heavenly_a riches_n and_o let_v we_o learn_v right_o to_o discern_v between_o the_o cross_n in_o respect_n of_o itself_o that_o be_v of_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o sense_n of_o our_o own_o heart_n and_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n and_o his_o rich_a promise_n which_o if_o we_o consider_v as_o it_o be_v in_o itself_o and_o without_o christ_n what_o trouble_n be_v so_o small_a that_o shall_v not_o utter_o overthrow_v we_o and_o so_o shall_v every_o trouble_v be_v unto_o we_o intolerable_a but_o if_o we_o behold_v the_o same_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n with_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n though_o our_o affliction_n and_o calamity_n seem_v never_o so_o great_a and_o grievous_a yet_o the_o supper_n abundant_a mercy_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n swallow_v they_o up_o all_o who_o albeit_o he_o suffer_v we_o to_o be_v afflict_v for_o a_o little_a season_n yet_o shall_v the_o entâ—e_fw-fr be_v full_a flesh_n say_v the_o contrary_a because_o it_o feel_v not_o only_o thy_o foot_n to_o slip_v but_o itself_o also_o to_o be_v tread_v under_o foot_n behold_v the_o son_n of_o god_n what_o he_o suffer_v behold_v john_n baptist_n the_o virgin_n mary_n the_o apostle_n the_o prophet_n what_o they_o suffer_v behold_v the_o church_n at_o this_o day_n what_o danger_n it_o be_v in_o what_o trouble_v and_o affliction_n it_o continual_o suffer_v and_o this_o be_v the_o state_n of_o the_o godly_a upon_o the_o experience_n whereof_o arise_v this_o proverb_n the_o more_o wicked_a the_o more_o happy_a and_o therefore_o the_o world_n fear_v and_o shun_v these_o danger_n can_v never_o abide_v the_o gospel_n and_o thus_o it_o appear_v to_o they_o not_o to_o be_v true_a that_o david_n say_v here_o the_o lord_n will_v not_o suffer_v thy_o foot_n to_o slip_v but_o rather_o the_o contrary_a that_o he_o cause_v thy_o foot_n to_o slip_v albeit_o it_o do_v but_o seem_v so_o for_o he_o do_v not_o so_o in_o deed_n and_o that_o to_o the_o flesh_n only_o but_o contrariwise_o to_o the_o spirit_n and_o faith_n it_o be_v exaltation_n and_o glory_n before_o god_n they_o judge_v that_o death_n which_o be_v suffer_v for_o the_o confession_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o be_v a_o beginning_n of_o a_o better_a and_o eternal_a life_n ignominy_n shame_n and_o contempt_n of_o the_o world_n they_o count_v inestimable_a glory_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god._n faith_n this_o be_v the_o judgement_n of_o faith_n albeit_o the_o flesh_n think_v otherwise_o but_o we_o may_v not_o judge_v after_o the_o flesh_n for_o if_o we_o do_v what_o need_v then_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o word_n what_o need_v exhortation_n what_o need_v the_o promise_n therefore_o we_o must_v turn_v the_o evil_a into_o good_a and_o where_o the_o flesh_n conclude_v that_o it_o be_v continual_o tread_v under_o foot_n there_o faith_n must_v confess_v and_o say_v that_o by_o the_o cross_n and_o by_o these_o affliction_n we_o be_v make_v like_o to_o the_o son_n of_o god_n &_o fashion_v like_o unto_o christ_n for_o these_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v believe_v as_o invisible_a and_o also_o insensible_a and_o not_o as_o thing_n to_o be_v see_v and_o feel_v but_o such_o as_o will_v not_o believe_v but_o follow_v their_o own_o sense_n and_o feel_v do_v rather_o choose_v the_o glory_n &_o pleasure_n of_o this_o world_n which_o so_o little_a while_n endure_v and_o so_o sudden_o vanish_v away_o but_o how_o miserable_a shall_v their_o condition_n be_v when_o after_o these_o transitory_a momentane_z and_o vain_a pleasure_n they_o shall_v find_v and_o feel_v nothing_o but_o anguish_n &_o torment_n with_o weep_v &_o wail_v for_o ever_o &_o without_o end_n how_o much_o better_o have_v it_o be_v for_o they_o to_o have_v suffer_v for_o a_o while_n with_o lazarus_n both_o sickness_n and_o poverty_n then_o for_o a_o little_a season_n to_o flourish_v with_o the_o rich_a glutton_n in_o wealth_n and_o prosperity_n &_o with_o he_o to_o be_v torment_v in_o everlasting_a fire_n this_o doctrine_n therefore_o pertain_v to_o those_o which_o desire_v to_o believe_v &_o not_o to_o feel_v that_o they_o may_v discern_v between_o god_n &_o their_o affliction_n not_o fix_v their_o eye_n upon_o the_o present_a calamity_n but_o look_v up_o to_o the_o invisible_a help_n promise_v in_o the_o word_n for_o those_o trouble_n &_o danger_n where_o unto_o the_o faithful_a be_v subject_a do_v in_o deed_n cause_v the_o foot_n to_o slip_v but_o yet_o so_o that_o faith_n will_v not_o suffer_v they_o to_o fall_v but_o make_v they_o able_a to_o pass_v over_o those_o rock_n be_v they_o never_o so_o dangerous_a &_o to_o compare_v their_o momentane_z affliction_n with_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v infinite_a and_o everlasting_a as_o to_o god_n himself_o his_o power_n his_o grace_n and_o final_o eternal_a life_n which_o god_n have_v promise_v in_o christ_n to_o they_o that_o believe_v in_o he_o to_o know_v these_o thing_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o comfort_n both_o ourselves_o
this_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o those_o that_o be_v infect_v with_o this_o poison_n the_o comtempt_n of_o the_o word_n i_o mean_v and_o the_o child_n of_o god_n that_o as_o they_o be_v whole_o bend_v to_o seek_v and_o advance_v the_o glory_n of_o the_o everliving_a god_n so_o be_v these_o either_o inflame_a with_o a_o devilish_a desire_n to_o maintain_v &_o set_v forth_o damnable_a doctrine_n wicked_a opinion_n and_o false_a worship_n be_v whole_o give_v over_o to_o serve_v the_o god_n of_o this_o world_n and_o their_o god_n mammon_n seek_v with_o greediness_n and_o pleasure_n their_o own_o perdition_n &_o damnation_n and_o so_o albeit_o they_o be_v already_o whole_o possess_v in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o devil_n yet_o be_v they_o merry_a and_o joyful_a but_o the_o end_n shall_v be_v such_o as_o for_o their_o horrible_a example_n be_v set_v forth_o in_o the_o story_n of_o the_o sodomite_n let_v we_o pray_v unto_o god_n therefore_o that_o he_o will_v preserve_v we_o be_v a_o false_a definition_n of_o the_o temple_n which_o the_o papist_n make_v that_o it_o be_v a_o house_n build_v with_o stone_n &_o timber_n to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n what_o this_o temple_n be_v they_o themselves_o know_v not_o for_o the_o temple_n of_o solomon_n be_v not_o therefore_o beautiful_a because_o it_o be_v adorn_v with_o gold_n and_o silver_n and_o other_o precious_a ornament_n but_o the_o true_a beauty_n of_o that_o temple_n be_v because_o in_o that_o place_n the_o people_n hear_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n call_v upon_o his_o name_n find_v he_o merciful_a hear_v we_o which_o will_v deliver_v we_o in_o the_o time_n of_o trouble_n which_o will_v forgive_v we_o our_o sin_n and_o at_o the_o last_o will_v give_v we_o everlasting_a life_n for_o these_o great_a benefit_n say_v david_n we_o give_v thank_n unto_o god_n and_o we_o rejoice_v that_o we_o may_v come_v together_o into_o that_o place_n wherein_o god_n work_v all_o these_o thing_n by_o the_o yea_o crucify_v again_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o tread_v thy_o saviour_n under_o thy_o foot_n when_o thou_o contemn_v the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o for_o thy_o salvation_n be_v reveil_v &_o unto_o man_n likewise_o in_o the_o first_o psalm_n he_o say_v the_o wicked_a shall_v not_o stand_v in_o judgement_n that_o be_v they_o do_v not_o persevere_v and_o abide_v in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o church_n of_o god_n do_v not_o prosper_v it_o can_v go_v well_o with_o any_o particular_a member_n thereof_o no_o marvel_n then_o why_o david_n so_o earnest_o exhort_v all_o the_o faithful_a to_o pray_v for_o the_o peace_n and_o prosperity_n of_o the_o church_n wherefore_o if_o we_o will_v pray_v as_o we_o ought_v to_o do_v we_o must_v first_o and_o principal_o commend_v unto_o god_n the_o common_a state_n of_o the_o church_n for_o he_o that_o seek_v his_o own_o welfare_n and_o neglect_v the_o state_n and_o prosperity_n of_o the_o church_n do_v not_o only_o show_v himself_o to_o be_v void_a of_o all_o sense_n and_o zeal_n of_o true_a piety_n but_o also_o the_o prayer_n which_o he_o make_v for_o himself_o be_v in_o vain_a &_o profit_v he_o nothing_o let_v they_o prosper_v that_o love_n thou_o he_o wish_v unto_o they_o which_o love_v the_o word_n and_o reverence_n this_o seat_n that_o god_n will_v bless_v they_o with_o all_o manner_n of_o blessing_n &_o felicity_n and_o this_o prayer_n be_v very_o necessary_a for_o we_o see_v daily_o how_o the_o true_a professor_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v in_o danger_n by_o the_o minister_n of_o satan_n the_o enemy_n of_o god_n &_o his_o truth_n on_o every_o side_n which_o can_v be_v content_a rather_o to_o have_v the_o turk_n to_o reign_v over_o they_o yea_o the_o devil_n himself_o and_o all_o the_o fury_n of_o hell_n then_o to_o see_v we_o prosper_v and_o the_o gospel_n to_o flourish_v lest_o their_o curse_a work_n of_o darkness_n and_o infidelity_n shall_v appear_v unto_o the_o world_n verse_n 7._o peace_n be_v within_o thy_o wall_n and_o prosperity_n within_o thy_o palace_n now_o that_o the_o prophet_n have_v exhort_v all_o man_n to_o pray_v for_o the_o peace_n and_o prosperity_n of_o jerusalem_n he_o turn_v unto_o the_o city_n and_o do_v not_o only_o wish_v well_o unto_o it_o but_o also_o he_o show_v unto_o other_o how_o they_o shall_v pray_v for_o it_o the_o sum_n whereof_o be_v that_o true_a religion_n may_v concord_n in_o the_o church_n and_o peace_n in_o the_o civil_a state_n there_o can_v no_o good_a thing_n be_v lack_v &_o therefore_o the_o devil_n so_o busy_o labour_v to_o trouble_v the_o peace_n of_o they_o both_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o there_o be_v such_o a_o multitude_n of_o false_a prophet_n rebel_n &_o seditious_a person_n amongst_o this_o people_n as_o the_o story_n do_v testify_v wherefore_o david_n be_v teach_v by_o his_o own_o experience_n pray_v for_o these_o 2._o thing_n without_o the_o which_o the_o world_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o wild_a desert_n example_n hereof_o may_v be_v unto_o we_o the_o late_a time_n wherein_o we_o live_v under_o the_o pope_n before_o this_o light_n of_o the_o gospel_n begin_v to_o shine_v for_o then_o when_o the_o sound_a doctrine_n of_o the_o word_n be_v lack_v what_o can_v the_o pope_n &_o all_o his_o shaveling_n do_v what_o one_o verse_n do_v they_o right_o understand_v throughout_o the_o whole_a psalter_n whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o resist_v most_o manifest_a impiety_n which_o by_o the_o strong_a &_o mighty_a delusion_n of_o the_o devil_n overflow_v the_o world_n as_o in_o pilgrimage_n where_o they_o maintain_v most_o damnable_a idolatry_n and_o cause_v the_o people_n to_o adore_v the_o work_n of_o their_o own_o hand_n and_o if_o any_o man_n speak_v against_o they_o he_o be_v up_o and_o by_o take_v and_o burn_v as_o a_o heretic_n so_o true_a be_v it_o that_o when_o the_o word_n be_v once_o lose_v the_o world_n remain_v in_o most_o horrible_a darkness_n and_o can_v do_v nothing_o else_o but_o abuse_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o so_o fall_v to_o most_o detestable_a impiety_n or_o else_o to_o desperation_n this_o david_n foresee_v and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v so_o earnest_o for_o the_o prosperity_n of_o jerusalem_n for_o faithful_a pastor_n in_o the_o church_n and_o godly_a prince_n in_o the_o politic_a state_n verse_n 8._o for_o my_o brethren_n and_o neighbour_n sake_n i_o will_v wish_v thou_o now_o prosperity_n here_o david_n show_v the_o cause_n as_o he_o do_v also_o in_o the_o verse_n follow_v why_o he_o pray_v thus_o for_o jerusalem_n as_o if_o he_o say_v in_o that_o i_o wish_v that_o peace_n may_v be_v in_o thou_o o_o jerusalem_n in_o that_o i_o desire_v thy_o prosperity_n and_o welfare_n i_o do_v it_o for_o my_o the_o godly_a pastor_n when_o he_o go_v about_o with_o great_a care_n &_o diligence_n to_o reform_v the_o corrupt_a life_n and_o wickedness_n of_o the_o people_n see_v notwithstanding_o that_o the_o more_o part_n still_o remain_v perverse_a &_o intractable_a the_o magistrate_n travel_v with_o like_a care_n and_o diligence_n in_o his_o call_n findeth_z the_o people_n disobedient_a &_o incorrigible_a likewise_o be_v it_o in_o household_n government_n what_o unfaithful_a service_n shall_v thou_o find_v even_o amongst_o those_o who_o thou_o think_v to_o have_v find_v most_o true_a and_o faithful_a hereof_o it_o come_v that_o many_o be_v discomfort_a and_o utter_o discourage_v see_v so_o little_a fruit_n and_o success_n to_o ensue_v of_o their_o godly_a travel_n be_v no_o sort_n of_o man_n so_o vile_a and_o abject_a which_o do_v not_o think_v that_o they_o may_v do_v what_o they_o listen_v against_o the_o true_a professor_n of_o the_o gospel_n hereof_o come_v such_o intolerable_a injury_n horrible_a blasphemy_n cruel_a torment_n and_o bloody_a slaughter_n of_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n for_o the_o flesh_n have_v no_o wall_n no_o munition_n to_o defend_v it_o but_o the_o spirit_n therefore_o the_o flesh_n be_v in_o danger_n to_o all_o storm_n and_o tempest_n break_a &_o tread_v down_o of_o the_o wicked_a as_o isaiah_n say_v chap._n 51._o which_o have_v say_v unto_o thy_o soul_n bow_v down_o that_o we_o may_v go_v over_o thou_o have_v lay_v thy_o body_n as_o the_o ground_n and_o as_o the_o street_n to_o they_o that_o go_v over_o these_o affliction_n we_o must_v needs_o suffer_v and_o by_o patience_n overcome_v they_o &_o withal_o we_o must_v beware_v that_o by_o these_o outward_a affliction_n the_o inward_a man_n be_v not_o weaken_v or_o overcome_v rest_v in_o this_o assure_a hope_n and_o trust_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v never_o forsake_v we_o but_o that_o we_o be_v in_o the_o bosom_n of_o the_o father_n and_o be_v close_v within_o most_o sure_a and_o strong_a hold_n so_o that_o now_o although_o our_o good_n our_o wife_n our_o child_n yea_o and_o our_o life_n also_o be_v take_v from_o we_o yet_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v spoil_v of_o our_o christ_n by_o who_o we_o be_v so_o sure_o defend_v that_o in_o the_o mid_n of_o all_o our_o tentation_n he_o will_v make_v away_o for_o we_o to_o escape_v or_o else_o geve_v we_o strength_n to_o bear_v they_o thus_o we_o see_v what_o consolation_n the_o holy_a ghost_n set_v forth_o unto_o they_o which_o believe_v the_o word_n for_o unto_o such_o as_o look_v for_o a_o better_a life_n than_o this_o all_o thing_n be_v here_o full_a of_o calamity_n and_o misery_n death_n follow_v death_n as_o paul_n say_v and_o we_o continual_o die_v one_o tentation_n follow_v a_o other_o until_o at_o the_o length_n by_o the_o death_n of_o the_o flesh_n all_o misery_n shall_v cease_v and_o have_v a_o end_n this_o verse_n therefore_o make_v much_o for_o our_o comfort_n admonish_v we_o that_o we_o must_v suffer_v many_o trouble_n yet_o so_o that_o at_o the_o length_n we_o shall_v be_v safe_a and_o set_v at_o liberty_n from_o they_o all_o though_o not_o in_o this_o prince_n and_o other_o which_o hate_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o doctrine_n which_o we_o profess_v but_o these_o be_v very_a trifle_n if_o you_o compare_v they_o with_o those_o vexation_n apostle_n time_n and_o with_o a_o show_n of_o holiness_n have_v deceive_v the_o simple_a which_o because_o god_n punish_v they_o not_o but_o spare_v they_o and_o suffer_v they_o to_o prosper_v in_o this_o world_n become_v so_o proud_a that_o they_o will_v be_v count_v amongst_o the_o holy_a and_o of_o the_o world_n be_v so_o common_o take_v we_o see_v that_o not_o only_o the_o godly_a be_v mix_v with_o the_o wicked_a in_o this_o world_n but_o in_o the_o lord_n floor_n also_o the_o wheat_n lie_v hide_v under_o the_o chaff_n we_o must_v pray_v therefore_o that_o god_n will_v bring_v these_o hypocrite_n to_o light_n &_o give_v unto_o they_o their_o just_a punishment_n with_o the_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n then_o shall_v peace_n ensue_v to_o the_o church_n of_o god_n for_o while_o the_o particular_a captivity_n for_o what_o great_a matter_n be_v it_o for_o this_o people_n of_o the_o jew_n be_v as_o it_o be_v but_o a_o little_a handful_n to_o be_v deliver_v out_o of_o temporal_a captivity_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o exceed_a and_o incomparable_a deliverance_n whereby_o mankind_n be_v sâ—e_v at_o liberty_n from_o the_o power_n of_o their_o enemy_n not_o temporal_a but_o zion_n be_v destroy_v and_o go_v the_o treasure_n be_v open_v that_o be_v to_o say_v christ_n who_o then_o be_v hide_v in_o the_o promise_n as_o under_o a_o veil_n wherefore_o let_v we_o remember_v that_o all_o such_o place_n must_v be_v apply_v unto_o christ_n like_a as_o also_o we_o be_v teach_v by_o experience_n that_o in_o tentation_n there_o be_v no_o consolation_n whereby_o afflict_a again_o behold_v moreover_o his_o singular_a patience_n in_o affliction_n his_o careful_a and_o continual_a travel_n for_o the_o amplify_a and_o adnaunce_v of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n of_o the_o true_a service_n and_o worship_n of_o god_n what_o shall_v i_o say_v more_o david_n have_v not_o many_o fellow_n whether_o you_o consider_v his_o life_n and_o his_o faith_n or_o the_o witness_n pronounce_v of_o he_o by_o the_o lord_n himself_o and_o yet_o he_o notwithstanding_o so_o excellent_a and_o so_o holy_a a_o man_n be_v compel_v plain_o to_o confess_v his_o imperfection_n say_v if_o far_o inferior_a to_o david_n and_o yet_o david_n say_v that_o righteousness_n come_v not_o by_o work_n for_o say_v he_o if_o thou_o will_v mark_v what_o be_v do_v amiss_o no_o man_n shall_v be_v able_a to_o abide_v it_o or_o to_o stand_v in_o thy_o sight_n oh_o lord_n wherefore_o let_v no_o man_n trust_v that_o by_o his_o own_o merit_n or_o righteousness_n he_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o stand_v against_o the_o terror_n of_o death_n and_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n neither_o do_v i_o suppose_v that_o amongst_o our_o adversary_n there_o be_v any_o such_o as_o dare_v presume_v to_o enter_v into_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n trust_v upon_o his_o own_o righteousness_n and_o yet_o they_o teach_v not_o command_v and_o exhort_v other_o so_o to_o do_v but_o we_o teach_v a_o contrary_a doctrine_n lead_v the_o church_n from_o this_o false_a trust_n to_o a_o trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o the_o merit_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n and_o for_o this_o cause_n they_o condemn_v we_o as_o heretic_n be_v not_o this_o extreme_a malice_n they_o will_v not_o do_v themselves_o that_o they_o teach_v other_o to_o do_v for_o when_o death_n come_v they_o dare_v not_o trust_v to_o their_o own_o merit_n and_o yet_o will_v they_o force_v other_o so_o to_o do_v or_o most_o cruel_o condemn_v they_o for_o heretic_n thus_o we_o be_v teach_v by_o the_o experience_n of_o all_o such_o as_o be_v not_o utter_o void_a of_o understanding_n that_o no_o man_n live_v overcome_v by_o his_o own_o work_n or_o righteousness_n in_o god_n sight_n and_o yet_o the_o whole_a nature_n of_o man_n when_o it_o be_v not_o under_o tentation_n still_o look_v unto_o work_n and_o seek_v mean_n how_o it_o may_v by_o they_o please_v god_n but_o here_o be_v set_v forth_o unto_o we_o a_o simple_a and_o a_o plain_a doctrine_n if_o thou_o lord_n will_v mark_v what_o be_v do_v amiss_o none_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o abide_v it_o who_o will_v then_o desire_v to_o enter_v into_o judgement_n that_o he_o forsooth_o to_o set_v forth_o unto_o we_o what_o they_o be_v against_o who_o he_o fight_v and_o to_o give_v a_o further_a light_n to_o the_o former_a sentence_n by_o set_v forth_o the_o contrary_a as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v i_o have_v learn_v by_o experience_n oh_o lord_n why_o there_o be_v mercy_n with_o thou_o &_o why_o of_o right_n thou_o may_v challenge_v this_o title_n unto_o thyself_o be_v call_v a_o jew_n and_o rest_v in_o the_o law_n and_o glory_v in_o god_n etc_n etc_n they_o that_o be_v such_o be_v not_o move_v with_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o apostle_n nor_o with_o the_o miracle_n of_o christ_n raise_v up_o the_o dead_a to_o life_n but_o be_v as_o unsensible_a as_o stone_n for_o in_o this_o security_n they_o be_v not_o only_o ignorant_a what_o this_o propitiation_n and_o this_o mercy_n be_v but_o also_o they_o persecute_v the_o same_o such_o therefore_o do_v commit_v a_o double_a sin_n more_o grievous_a than_o the_o publican_n and_o our_o saviour_n christ_n say_v well_o of_o they_o harlot_n and_o publican_n shall_v enter_v before_o you_o into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n for_o they_o be_v easy_o persuade_v that_o they_o be_v sinner_n and_o that_o they_o have_v need_n of_o the_o free_a mercy_n of_o god_n &_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n but_o contrariwise_o annas_n caiphas_n &_o the_o other_o pharisee_n when_o they_o hear_v these_o thing_n do_v great_a fear_n than_o shall_v be_v in_o presumption_n there_o be_v no_o fear_n at_o all_o therefore_o the_o mean_a between_o they_o both_o be_v this_o that_o god_n shut_v up_o all_o under_o mercy_n righteousness_n notwithstanding_o he_o take_v not_o away_o the_o law_n for_o without_o the_o law_n this_o life_n can_v not_o continue_v in_o what_o a_o miserable_a state_n shall_v the_o common_a wealth_n be_v if_o murder_n adultery_n and_o robbery_n shall_v be_v commit_v &_o permit_v without_o punishment_n or_o execution_n of_o law_n moreover_o the_o work_n and_o exercise_n of_o the_o godly_a must_v be_v guide_v &_o order_v by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n for_o this_o purpose_n god_n will_v have_v the_o law_n to_o continue_v and_o account_v it_o for_o a_o holy_a obedience_n in_o those_o that_o do_v believe_v but_o as_o touch_v sin_n he_o command_v that_o we_o shall_v cast_v away_o all_o trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o the_o law_n and_o put_v our_o trust_n only_o in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n set_v forth_o unto_o we_o in_o christ_n jesus_n crucify_v for_o our_o sin_n by_o this_o mean_n presumption_n be_v take_v away_o and_o fear_n remain_v not_o such_o a_o fear_n as_o be_v in_o the_o desperate_a but_o such_o as_o we_o see_v in_o good_a and_o well_o nurter_v child_n towards_o their_o parent_n no_o monk_n therefore_o shall_v be_v save_v because_o of_o his_o order_n or_o strait_a life_n i_o likewise_o shall_v not_o be_v save_v because_o i_o preach_v christ_n with_o careful_a diligence_n &_o faithful_a endeavour_n the_o prince_n be_v not_o save_v because_o he_o faithful_o govern_v and_o defend_v his_o subject_n but_o as_o touch_v the_o monk_n you_o may_v easy_o prove_v this_o to_o be_v true_a for_o that_o kind_a of_o life_n be_v altogether_o contrary_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o to_o teach_v and_o instruct_v the_o church_n to_o govern_v the_o common_a wealth_n be_v in_o deed_n most_o holy_a and_o excellent_a work_n and_o yet_o be_v they_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n which_o of_o themselves_o bring_v either_o desperation_n or_o presumption_n wherefore_o though_o these_o work_n be_v never_o so_o perfect_a and_o holy_a yet_o be_v there_o no_o salvation_n but_o in_o this_o alone_a that_o there_o be_v mercy_n with_o the_o lord_n that_o he_o may_v be_v fear_v fear_v wherefore_o god_n have_v just_o shut_v up_o all_o under_o sin_n that_o he_o may_v have_v mercy_n upon_o all_o for_o if_o you_o leave_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n whereby_o he_o may_v deserve_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n no_o man_n will_v fear_v or_o worship_n god_n but_o all_o man_n will_v come_v unto_o god_n as_o the_o monk_n do_v with_o their_o abstinence_n prayer_n obedience_n and_o such_o like_a but_o by_o this_o mean_v god_n be_v lose_v and_o the_o idol_n of_o man_n heart_n be_v worship_v in_o steed_n of_o god._n god._n for_o while_o the_o monk_n think_v to_o please_v god_n with_o his_o hempen_a girdle_n wherewith_o he_o ought_v rather_o to_o be_v hang_v up_o upon_o a_o tree_n then_o gird_v while_o he_o think_v by_o the_o observation_n of_o other_o tradition_n to_o please_v god_n do_v he_o not_o depart_v from_o the_o true_a god_n &_o set_v his_o own_o imagination_n in_o the_o stead_n of_o god_n while_o he_o be_v persuade_v that_o god_n think_v the_o same_o that_o he_o imagine_v of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o follow_v plain_a idolatry_n which_o imagine_v a_o strange_a god_n and_o lose_v the_o true_a god_n for_o the_o true_a god_n be_v propitiation_n and_o mercy_n through_o christ_n but_o such_o as_o glory_v in_o their_o work_n will_v make_v their_o work_n propitiatory_a and_o available_a to_o deserve_v grace_n believe_v wherefore_o god_n reject_v all_o work_n and_o set_v forth_o his_o naked_a and_o bare_a mercy_n that_o he_o may_v be_v fear_v and_o not_o contemn_v of_o the_o presumptuous_a hereby_o take_v away_o all_o cause_n of_o presumption_n let_v we_o learn_v then_o out_o of_o this_o verse_n or_o this_o general_a proposition_n that_o when_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n of_o grace_n or_o propitiation_n be_v lose_v it_o follow_v that_o in_o steed_n thereof_o be_v a_o monk_n and_o walk_v in_o the_o confidence_n of_o my_o own_o righteousness_n for_o by_o experience_n i_o be_o able_a to_o prove_v that_o of_o the_o most_o perfect_a righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n there_o can_v nothing_o else_o follow_v but_o either_o desperation_n which_o be_v more_o seldom_o or_o presumption_n which_o be_v more_o common_a for_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n and_o the_o devil_n can_v not_o beware_v but_o they_o must_v needs_o presume_v thou_o will_v say_v then_o shall_v we_o not_o keep_v the_o law_n justify_v shall_v we_o not_o do_v good_a work_n yes_o very_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o do_v they_o for_o god_n therefore_o have_v a_o church_n
in_o the_o world_n therefore_o have_v he_o ordain_v common_a wealth_n society_n &_o family_n that_o in_o no_o place_n there_o shall_v be_v want_v occasion_n of_o well_o do_v but_o who_o be_v he_o that_o when_o he_o have_v do_v these_o thing_n to_o the_o uttermost_a of_o his_o power_n see_v not_o how_o much_o impurity_n &_o uncleamne_v remain_v especial_o if_o he_o shall_v bring_v his_o work_n the_o mercyseat_n there_o can_v be_v no_o fear_n of_o god_n but_o mere_a presumption_n christian_n doctrine_n therefore_o do_v not_o deny_v good_a work_n as_o our_o adversary_n false_o and_o malicious_o report_v of_o we_o but_o it_o teach_v that_o god_n will_v not_o strait_o mark_v our_o iniquity_n but_o this_o he_o require_v that_o we_o believe_v and_o trust_v in_o his_o mercy_n the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n be_v well_o know_v but_o by_o experience_n and_o practice_v it_o be_v not_o so_o well_o know_v for_o our_o infirmity_n be_v such_o that_o we_o be_v rather_o touch_v with_o the_o sense_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n then_o with_o the_o laughter_n and_o joy_n that_o be_v the_o sweet_a comfort_n and_o joyful_a promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o to_o speak_v of_o myself_o and_o of_o my_o own_o feel_n the_o redemption_n and_o life_n give_v by_o christ_n do_v not_o so_o much_o pierce_v my_o heart_n as_o it_o be_v terrify_v with_o one_o word_n or_o one_o
