Amen The Epistle 1 S. John 1.1 THat which was from the beginning which we have heard which we have seen with our eyes which we have looked upon and our hands have handled of the word of life for the life was manifested and we have seen it and bear witness and shew unto you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested unto us That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you that ye also may have fellowship with us and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ And these things write we unto you that your joy may be full This then is the message which we have heard of him and declare unto you That God is light and in him is no darkness at all If we say that we have fellowship with him and walk in darkness we lie and do not the truth But if we walk in the light as he is in the light we have fellowship one with another and the bloud of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin If we say that we have no sin we deceive our selves and the truth is not in us If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness If we say that we have not sinned we make him a liar and his Word is not in us The Gospel S. Amen For the Epistle Rev. 14.1 I Looked and lo a Lamb stood on the mount Sion and with him an hundred fourty and four thousand having his Fathers name written in their foreheads And I heard a voice from heaven as the voice of many waters and as the voice of a great thunder and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps and they sung as it were a new song before the throne and before the four beasts and the elders and no man could learn that song but the hundred and fourty and four thousand which were redeemed from the earth These are they which were not defiled with women for they are virgins these are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth these were redeemed from among men being the first-fruits unto God and to the Lamb. Amen For the Epistle Acts 12.1 ABout that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the Church And he killed James the brother of John with the sword And because he saw it pleased the Jews he proceeded further to take Peter also Then were the days of unleavened bread And when he had apprehended him he put him in prison and delivered him to four quaternions of souldiers to keep him intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people Peter therefore was kept in prison but prayer was made without ceasing of the Church unto God for him And when Herod would have brought him forth the same night Peter was sleeping
Amen ¶ Then shall the Priest joyn their right Hands together and say Those whom God hath joyned together let no man put asunder ¶ Then shall the Minister speak unto the people FOrasmuch as N. and N. have consented together in holy Wedlock and have witnessed the same before God and this company and thereto have given and pledged their Troth either to other and have declared the same by giving and receiving of a Ring and by joyning of Hands I pronounce that they be Man and Wife together In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost Amen ¶ And the Minister shall add this blessing GOd the Father God the Son God Holy Ghost bless preserve and keep you the Lord mercifully with his favour look upon you and so fill you with all spiritual benediction and grace that ye may so live together in this life that in the world to come ye may have life everlasting Amen ¶ Then the Minister or Clerks going to the Lords Table shall say or sing this Psalm following Beati omnes Psal 128. Amen ¶ This Prayer next following shall be omitted where the Woman is past Child-bearing O Merciful Lord and heavenly Father By whose gracious gift mankind is increased We beseech thee assist with thy blessing these two persons that they may both be fruitful in procreation of Children and also live together so long in godly love and honesty that they may see their children Christianly and virtuously brought up to thy praise and honour through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen O God who by thy mighty power hast made all things of nothing who also after other things set in order didst appoint that out of Man created after thine own image and similitude Woman should take her beginning and knitting them together didst teach that it should never be lawful to put asunder those whom thou by Matrimony hadst made one O God who hast consecrated the state of Matrimony to such an excellent Mystery that in it is signified and represented the spiritual marriage and unity betwixt Christ and his Church Look mercifully upon these thy servants that both this Man may love his wife according to thy Word as Christ did love his spouse the Church who gave himself for it loving and cherishing it even as his own flesh and also that this Woman may be loving and amiable faithful and obedient to her Husband and in all quietness sobriety and peace be a follower of holy and godly Matrons O Lord bless them both and grant them to inherit thy everlasting Kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen ¶ Then shall the Priest say ALmighty God who at the beginning did create our first parents Adam and Eve and did sanctifie and joyn them together in Marriage Pour upon you the riches of his grace sanctifie and bless you that ye may please him both in body and soul and live together in holy love unto your lives end Amen ¶ After which if there be no Sermon declaring the Duties of Man and Wife the Minister shall read as followeth ALl ye that are married or that intend to take the holy Estate of Matrimony upon you hear what the holy Scripture doth say as touching the Duty of Husbands towards their Wives and Wives towards their Husbands Saint Paul in his Epistle to the Ephesians the Fifth Chapter doth give this commandment to all married Men Husbands love your Wives even as Christ also loved the Church and gave himself for it that he might sanctifie and cleanse it with the washing of water by the Word that he might present it to himself a glorious Church not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing but that it should be holy and without blemish So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies He that loved his wife loveth himself For no man ever yet hateth his own flesh but nourisheth and cherisheth it even
he vouchsafe to bring us all for his infinite mercy Amen ¶ Then shall they all kneel upon their knees and the Priest and Clerks kneeling in the place where they are accustomed to say the Litany shall say this Psalm Miserere mei Deus Miserere mei Deus Psal li. I Will love thee O Lord my strength the Lord is my stony rock and my defence my Saviour my God and my might in whom I will trust my buckler the horn also of my salvation and my refuge 2 I will call upon the Lord which is worthy to be praised so shall I be safe from mine enemies 3 The sorrows of death compassed me and the over-flowings of ungodliness made me afraid 4 The pains of hell came about me the snares of death overtook me 5 In my trouble I will call upon the Lord and complain unto my God 6 So shall he hear my voice out of his holy temple and my complaint shall come before him it shall enter even into his ears 7 The earth trembled and quaked the very foundations also of the hills shook and were removed because he was

XXVII ¶ Instead of the first Collect at Morning Prayer shall these two which next followeth be used O Most mighty God terrible in thy judgments and wonderful in thy doings toward the children of men who in thy heavy displeasure didst suffer the life of our late gracious Sovereign King Charles the First to be as this day taken away by the hands of cruel and bloudy men We thy sinful creatures here assembled before thee do in the behalf of all the people of this land humbly confess that they were the crying fins if this Nation which brought down this heavy judgment upon us But O gracious God when thou makest inquisition for bloud lay not the guilt of this innocent bloud the shedding whereof nothing but the bloud of thy Son can expiate lay it not to the charge of the people of this land nor let it ever be required of us or our posterity Be merciful O Lord be merciful unto thy people whom thou hast redeemed and be not angry with us for ever But pardon us for thy mercies sake through the merits of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. humility and meekness mortification and self-denial charity and constant perseverance unto the end And all this for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ his sake To whom with thee and the holy Ghost be all honour and glory world without end Amen A Form of Prayer with Thanksgiving to Almighty God For having put an end to the Great Rebellion by the Restitution of the King and Royal Family and the Restauration of the Government after many Years Interruption Which unspeakable Mercies were wonderfully compleated upon the Twenty ninth of May in the year 1660. And in Memory thereof that Day in every Year is by Act of Parliament appointed to be for ever kept holy ¶ THE Act of Parliament made in the in the Twelfth and confirmed in the Thirteenth Year of king Charles the Second for the observation of the Twenty ninth day of May yearly as a Day of publick Thanksgiving is to be read publickly in all Churches at Morning Prayer immediately after the Nicene Creed on the Lords Day next before every such Twenty ninth of May and notice to be given for the due observation of the said Day ¶ The Service shall be the same with the usual Office for Holy-days except where it is in this Office otherwise appointed ¶ If this day shall happen to be Ascension-day or Whitsunday the Collects of this Office are to be added to the Office of those Festivals in their proper places And if Munday or Tuesday in Whitsun-Week or Trinity Sunday the proper Psalms here appointed for this Day instead of those of ordinary course shall be also used and the Collects added as before and in all these cases the rest of this Office shall be omitted But if it shall happen to be any other Sunday this whole Office shall be used as it followeth entirely And what Festival soever shall happen to fall upon this solemn Day of Thanksgiving the following Hymn appointed instead of Venite exultemus shall be constantly used ¶ Morning Prayer shall begin with these Sentences TO the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses though we have rebelled against him neither have we obeyed the voice of the Lord our God to walk in his laws which he set before us Dan. 9.9 10.
