expedient_a for_o he_o to_o go_v away_o in_o that_o sense_n and_o therefore_o you_o find_v sometime_o how_o david_n complain_v psal_n 13.1_o 2._o how_o long_o o_o lord_n how_o long_o will_v thou_o demonstration_n of_o this_o point_n the_o last_o time_n i_o instance_a in_o 7_o or_o 8_o thing_n wherein_o it_o be_v sometime_o expedient_a for_o the_o saint_n and_o servant_n of_o christ_n to_o be_v deprive_v of_o their_o near_a and_o dear_a comfort_n in_o this_o life_n which_o i_o shall_v not_o now_o mention_v because_o i_o will_v finish_v this_o point_n at_o this_o time_n two_o i_o shall_v now_o proceed_v to_o the_o second_o thing_n propound_v which_o be_v to_o give_v the_o ground_n and_o reason_n of_o it_o why_o it_o be_v expedient_a for_o the_o saint_n and_o servant_n of_o christ_n thus_o to_o be_v deprive_v sometime_o of_o their_o near_a and_o dear_a comfort_n in_o this_o world_n this_o be_v a_o hard_a say_n the_o disciple_n be_v hard_a to_o believe_v it_o that_o it_o can_v be_v expedient_a for_o they_o that_o christ_n shall_v go_v away_o from_o they_o and_o so_o for_o a_o soul_n to_o be_v deprive_v of_o the_o light_n of_o god_n countenance_n that_o they_o can_v meet_v with_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n and_o ordinance_n these_o be_v hard_a thing_n to_o believe_v that_o they_o can_v be_v expedient_a for_o they_o now_o to_o give_v you_o some_o reason_n why_o it_o be_v your_o child_n than_o they_o do_v themselves_o alas_o if_o child_n be_v leave_v to_o their_o own_o judgement_n they_o will_v judge_v those_o thing_n expedient_a for_o they_o that_o be_v not_o expedient_a they_o will_v judge_v it_o be_v better_o for_o they_o to_o take_v their_o own_o liberty_n and_o to_o do_v their_o own_o will_n and_o that_o it_o be_v more_o expedient_a for_o they_o to_o be_v play_v than_o to_o go_v to_o school_n so_o they_o will_v judge_v it_o expedient_a for_o they_o never_o to_o be_v put_v out_o to_o apprenticeship_n to_o be_v servant_n to_o go_v from_o their_o father_n house_n they_o think_v it_o be_v better_o for_o they_o to_o be_v always_o at_o home_n under_o their_o parent_n wing_n but_o you_o that_o be_v parent_n know_v what_o be_v more_o expedient_a for_o your_o child_n than_o they_o do_v themselves_o and_o when_o they_o come_v to_o grow_v up_o then_o they_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o say_v that_o their_o father_n do_v judge_v better_o for_o they_o than_o they_o can_v have_v judge_v for_o themselves_o then_o they_o will_v say_v if_o i_o have_v be_v leave_v to_o my_o own_o judgement_n what_o be_v expedient_a for_o i_o then_o i_o have_v not_o you_o shall_v have_v the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o holy_a spirit_n i_o will_v send_v the_o comforter_n to_o you_o and_o that_o be_v better_a for_o you_o he_o will_v give_v they_o the_o presence_n of_o his_o spirit_n in_o stead_n of_o his_o own_o bodily_a presence_n and_o that_o be_v better_a for_o they_o sometime_o the_o lord_n take_v away_o one_o comfort_n and_o give_v another_o instead_o of_o it_o that_o be_v most_o expedient_a for_o we_o as_o it_o be_v say_v he_o remove_v the_o former_a covenant_n and_o that_o be_v do_v away_o that_o so_o he_o may_v bring_v in_o a_o new_a covenant_n in_o way_n of_o correction_n thus_o the_o lord_n be_v please_v to_o deal_v with_o his_o own_o child_n if_o he_o see_v they_o be_v perverse_a and_o disobedient_a and_o careless_a and_o rebellious_a it_o be_v just_a with_o the_o lord_n then_o in_o a_o way_n of_o correction_n and_o chastisemnet_n to_o take_v those_o mercy_n from_o they_o that_o he_o see_v to_o be_v most_o near_o and_o dear_a to_o inordinate_o set_v upon_o they_o and_o therefore_o hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o it_o be_v so_o grievous_a to_o we_o to_o part_v with_o they_o and_o that_o we_o be_v so_o inordinate_a in_o or_o outward-enjoyment_n here_o be_v our_o folly_n because_o possible_o we_o mourn_v and_o grieve_v for_o that_o which_o be_v most_o expedient_a for_o we_o and_o be_v not_o that_o folly_n though_o we_o do_v not_o know_v so_o much_o yet_o the_o part_n with_o this_o or_o that_o relation_n with_o this_o or_o that_o child_n or_o with_o all_o our_o child_n with_o this_o husband_n or_o that_o wife_n it_o may_v be_v most_o expedient_a for_o we_o i_o say_v therefore_o take_v heed_n of_o grieve_v immoderate_o or_o inordinate_o for_o it_o because_o it_o may_v be_v our_o great_a folly_n it_o may_v be_v more_o expedient_a for_o we_o that_o they_o go_v away_o than_o that_o they_o stay_v with_o we_o and_o true_o now_o it_o may_v be_v we_o grieve_v inordinate_o for_o the_o loss_n of_o our_o child_n or_o such_o a_o child_n we_o do_v not_o know_v what_o they_o may_v have_v prove_v if_o the_o lord_n have_v lengthen_v out_o their_o life_n to_o we_o they_o may_v have_v prove_v the_o great_a vexation_n that_o ever_o we_o meet_v with_o in_o the_o world_n though_o now_o it_o may_v be_v we_o can_v think_v so_o we_o do_v not_o know_v how_o expedient_a it_o be_v it_o may_v be_v more_o expedient_a for_o we_o that_o they_o go_v away_o therefore_o mourn_v not_o inordinate_o but_o submit_v to_o the_o holy_a will_n of_o god_n that_o know_v what_o be_v more_o expedient_a for_o we_o than_o we_o do_v ourselves_o and_o so_o for_o our_o estate_n the_o lord_n take_v away_o our_o estate_n from_o we_o our_o livelihood_n in_o the_o world_n and_o bring_v we_o into_o a_o poor_a and_o low_a estate_n and_o condition_n well_o do_v not_o mourn_v inordinate_o
if_o the_o lord_n call_v we_o to_o part_v with_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v near_o and_o dear_a to_o we_o near_o and_o dear_a yoke-fellow_n husband_n or_o wife_n or_o a_o only_a son_n well_o here_o be_v the_o cordial_a and_o antidote_n that_o christ_n give_v know_v say_v he_o that_o it_o be_v expedient_a for_o you_o that_o this_o near_a comfort_n go_v away_o from_o you_o it_o be_v for_o your_o advantage_n profit_n and_o benefit_n brethren_n i_o pray_v let_v i_o ask_v you_o this_o question_n do_v you_o think_v that_o any_o creature_n comfort_n that_o you_o enjoy_v in_o this_o world_n can_v prescribe_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o blood_n to_o be_v take_v from_o you_o these_o thing_n be_v somewhat_o hard_o but_o he_o tell_v you_o it_o be_v expedient_a for_o you_o and_o you_o will_v yield_v to_o it_o you_o will_v take_v the_o vomit_n or_o purge_v though_o never_o so_o grievous_a to_o you_o you_o will_v take_v the_o pill_n though_o never_o so_o bitter_a to_o you_o and_o if_o he_o will_v draw_v so_o much_o blood_n from_o you_o let_v he_o take_v it_o so_o the_o lord_n be_v please_v to_o deal_v as_o a_o wise_a physician_n he_o prescribe_v sometime_o a_o bitter_a pill_n for_o we_o to_o swallow_v down_o o_o to_o lose_v such_o a_o yoke-fellow_n or_o such_o a_o child_n this_o be_v a_o strong_a vomit_n a_o bitter_a purge_n this_o be_v like_o the_o draw_n of_o a_o man_n blood_n from_o his_o heart_n but_o our_o heavenly_a father_n know_v what_o be_v most_o expedient_a for_o we_o i_o tell_v you_o the_o truth_n say_v christ_n it_o be_v expedient_a for_o you_o that_o i_o go_v away_o it_o be_v expedient_a for_o you_o that_o i_o take_v so_o much_o blood_n from_o you_o that_o i_o put_v you_o upon_o the_o swallow_a of_o this_o bitter_a pill_n and_o remember_v and_o lay_v up_o this_o antidote_n against_o a_o time_n of_o need_n we_o know_v not_o how_o sudden_o any_o of_o we_o here_o before_o the_o lord_n may_v be_v call_v to_o part_v with_o our_o near_a and_o dear_a comfort_n we_o know_v not_o how_o the_o lord_n may_v deal_v with_o we_o well_o remember_v this_o antidote_n and_o lay_v it_o up_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v remember_v and_o say_v well_o it_o be_v expedient_a for_o i_o that_o this_o and_o that_o comfort_n be_v take_v away_o from_o i_o and_o you_o have_v hear_v the_o reason_n o_o remember_v these_o word_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n which_o he_o speak_v to_o his_o disciple_n to_o comfort_v they_o against_o their_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n for_o be_v deprive_v of_o the_o great_a comfort_n they_o have_v in_o this_o world_n nevertheless_o i_o tell_v you_o the_o truth_n it_o be_v expedient_a for_o you_o that_o i_o go_v away_o conversion_n of_o soul_n great_a joy_n to_o the_o minister_n of_o christ._n sermon_n iii_o john_n 16.8_o and_o when_o he_o be_v he_o that_o send_v i_o and_o because_o i_o have_v say_v these_o thing_n unto_o you_o sorrow_n have_v fill_v your_o heart_n christ_n endeavour_v to_o comfort_v their_o heart_n against_o their_o great_a sorrow_n and_o this_o in_o the_o general_n he_o propose_v for_o their_o comfort_n namely_o say_v he_o it_o be_v expedient_a for_o you_o that_o i_o go_v away_o it_o be_v not_o only_o expedient_a for_o i_o but_o it_o be_v expedient_a for_o you_o that_o i_o go_v away_o but_o they_o can_v hardly_o think_v so_o and_o then_o he_o give_v they_o this_o reason_n say_v he_o if_o i_o go_v not_o away_o the_o comforter_n will_v not_o come_v but_o if_o i_o depart_v i_o will_v send_v he_o unto_o you_o but_o then_o they_o may_v be_v ready_a to_o say_v lord_n suppose_v the_o comforter_n do_v come_v will_v that_o make_v recompense_n for_o our_o loss_n of_o thy_o presence_n what_o if_o the_o comforter_n do_v come_v what_o if_o we_o have_v the_o presence_n of_o thy_o spirit_n yet_o thy_o presence_n may_v seem_v to_o be_v more_o comfortable_a to_o we_o now_o christ_n lay_v in_o further_a for_o that_o say_v he_o if_o the_o comforter_n come_v that_o will_v be_v still_o better_o for_o you_o than_o my_o bodily_a presence_n be_v for_o if_o he_o come_v he_o will_v be_v with_o you_o to_o assist_v you_o in_o your_o ministry_n he_o will_v accompany_v the_o ministration_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o your_o mouth_n he_o will_v make_v your_o ministration_n to_o be_v successful_a and_o effectual_a for_o convince_a and_o convert_v thus_o now_o christ_n do_v lay_v in_o against_o their_o sorrow_n that_o they_o may_v have_v upon_o his_o departure_n from_o they_o that_o though_o he_o go_v from_o they_o yet_o they_o shall_v have_v that_o from_o the_o promise_n that_o shall_v countervail_v all_o that_o comfort_n and_o joy_n that_o they_o have_v by_o his_o bodily_a presence_n and_o this_o seem_v to_o be_v the_o very_a scope_n and_o intendment_n of_o these_o word_n when_o he_o be_v come_v say_v he_o he_o will_v so_o work_v with_o your_o ministry_n that_o it_o shall_v reprove_v or_o convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n of_o righteousness_n and_o of_o judgement_n before_o i_o come_v to_o the_o point_n because_o the_o word_n seem_v to_o have_v some_o difficulty_n in_o they_o and_o because_o there_o seem_v to_o be_v some_o variety_n in_o the_o interpretation_n of_o they_o i_o shall_v brief_o give_v you_o a_o hint_n of_o what_o i_o apprehend_v to_o be_v the_o most_o proper_a meaning_n of_o these_o word_n as_o now_o 1._o what_o do_v he_o mean_v by_o reprove_v he_o shall_v reprove_v the_o world_n 2._o what_o do_v he_o mean_v by_o the_o world_n and_o then_o 3._o how_o he_o shall_v reprove_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n of_o righteousness_n and_o of_o judgement_n i._o the_o word_n here_o translate_v reprove_v have_v a_o threefold_a acceptation_n in_o scripture_n 1._o sometime_o it_o signify_v to_o reprove_v as_o here_o it_o be_v translate_v and_o so_o i_o remember_v titus_n 1.13_o this_o witness_n be_v true_a wherefore_o rebuke_v they_o sharp_o or_o reprove_v they_o sharp_o it_o be_v the_o same_o word_n so_o here_o it_o be_v translate_v
in_o the_o text._n though_o i_o think_v that_o be_v not_o the_o proper_a signification_n or_o intendment_n of_o it_o in_o this_o place_n for_o observe_v it_o it_o be_v not_o so_o proper_a to_o say_v that_o the_o spirit_n when_o he_o come_v shall_v reprove_v the_o world_n of_o righteousness_n he_o may_v reprove_v they_o of_o sin_n and_o rebuke_v they_o for_o sin_n but_o not_o of_o righteousness_n nor_o for_o righteousness_n nor_o of_o judgement_n that_o be_v one_o signification_n of_o the_o word_n to_o reprove_v or_o rebuke_v 2._o sometime_o the_o word_n signify_v to_o make_v manifest_a or_o to_o make_v evident_a to_o make_v apparent_a so_o you_o shall_v find_v it_o john_n 3.20_o 21._o every_o one_o that_o do_v evil_a hate_v the_o light_n neither_o come_v to_o the_o light_n lest_o his_o deed_n shall_v be_v reprove_v or_o make_v manifest_a and_o it_o be_v expound_v in_o the_o next_o verse_n make_v manifest_a but_o he_o that_o do_v truth_n come_v to_o the_o light_n that_o his_o deed_n may_v be_v made_n manifest_a that_o they_o be_v wrought_v in_o god_n it_o be_v the_o same_o word_n here_o in_o the_o text._n but_o this_o can_v be_v the_o meaning_n of_o this_o word_n in_o the_o text_n that_o he_o shall_v make_v manifest_a sin_n and_o make_v manifest_a righteousness_n and_o make_v manifest_a judgement_n though_o there_o be_v a_o truth_n in_o that_o yet_o this_o can_v be_v the_o full_a intendment_n of_o this_o word_n in_o this_o place_n 3._o there_o be_v another_o signification_n of_o it_o and_o that_o be_v to_o convince_v and_o so_o it_o be_v in_o the_o margin_n he_o shall_v convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n of_o righteousness_n and_o of_o judgement_n and_o so_o i_o remember_v it_o be_v john_n 8.46_o say_v christ_n there_o which_o of_o you_o do_v convince_v i_o of_o sin_n it_o be_v the_o same_o word_n he_o do_v not_o say_v which_o of_o you_o charge_v i_o with_o sin_n for_o they_o do_v charge_v he_o with_o sin_n enough_o and_o they_o do_v reprove_v and_o rebuke_v he_o for_o sin_n they_o say_v he_o be_v a_o blasphemer_n therefore_o that_o can_v be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n to_o charge_n or_o reprove_v he_o of_o sin_n but_o which_o of_o you_o can_v convince_v i_o of_o sin_n to_o make_v it_o apparent_a without_o gainsaying_n that_o i_o be_o guilty_a of_o any_o sin_n and_o so_o i_o think_v that_o place_n tit._n 1.9_o hold_v fast_o the_o faithful_a word_n as_o he_o have_v be_v teach_v that_o he_o may_v be_v able_a by_o sound_a doctrine_n both_o to_o exhort_v and_o to_o convince_v the_o gainsayers_a and_o so_o i_o shall_v take_v it_o in_o this_o sense_n all_o along_o when_o the_o comforter_n be_v come_v he_o shall_v assist_v you_o in_o your_o ministry_n so_o as_o he_o shall_v thereby_o convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n of_o righteousness_n and_o of_o judgement_n ii_o what_o do_v he_o mean_v by_o the_o world_n not_o the_o whole_a universe_n the_o fabric_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n no_o that_o can_v be_v the_o meaning_n of_o it_o but_o it_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o man_n the_o world_n of_o man_n of_o sinful_a man_n man_n that_o be_v guilty_a of_o sin_n and_o more_o particular_o by_o the_o world_n we_o may_v understand_v the_o unbelieving_a world_n a_o company_n of_o unbeliever_n now_o unbeliever_n they_o may_v some_o of_o they_o be_v elect_v and_o be_v elect_v and_o shall_v be_v bring_v to_o believe_v in_o christ_n in_o time_n through_o the_o gospel_n and_o some_o of_o they_o be_v not_o elect_v and_o shall_v never_o be_v bring_v to_o believe_v in_o christ_n now_o which_o of_o these_o do_v christ_n here_o mean_a when_o he_o speak_v of_o the_o world_n whether_o he_o mean_v only_o those_o unbeliever_n that_o be_v elect_v and_o shall_v be_v bring_v on_o to_o believe_v so_o some_o think_v or_o whether_o he_o mean_v the_o unbeliever_n of_o the_o world_n that_o be_v never_o elect_v and_o shall_v never_o be_v bring_v to_o believe_v in_o christ_n so_o other_o true_o i_o see_v nothing_o to_o the_o contrary_n but_o we_o may_v include_v both_o namely_o unbeliever_n that_o be_v not_o elect_v the_o holy_a ghost_n shall_v come_v and_o convince_v they_o of_o sin_n though_o they_o shall_v go_v no_o further_o there_o may_v be_v conviction_n where_o no_o conversion_n follow_v and_o this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o convince_v of_o sin_n and_o he_o shall_v also_o convince_v unbeliever_n that_o be_v elect_v convince_v they_o effectual_o so_o as_o they_o shall_v be_v bring_v on_o to_o conversion_n and_o i_o think_v especial_o and_o chief_o our_o saviour_n here_o mean_v those_o unbeliever_n in_o the_o world_n that_o be_v elect_v though_o i_o will_v not_o exclude_v the_o other_o but_o those_o especial_o that_o be_v elect_v and_o shall_v be_v bring_v on_o through_o conviction_n and_o conversion_n to_o salvation_n for_o christ_n do_v speak_v these_o word_n by_o way_n of_o comfort_n to_o the_o disciple_n that_o the_o spirit_n shall_v come_v and_o assist_v they_o in_o their_o ministry_n it_o be_v some_o comfort_n indeed_o if_o any_o be_v convince_v but_o that_o be_v not_o so_o much_o comfort_n as_o to_o be_v convince_v and_o effectual_o wrought_v upon_o to_o salvation_n and_o this_o comfort_n christ_n do_v hold_v forth_o as_o a_o antidote_n against_o their_o sadness_n and_o sorrow_n upon_o his_o go_v away_o and_o then_o he_o shall_v convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n of_o righteousness_n and_o of_o judgement_n i_o shall_v not_o now_o come_v to_o speak_v particular_o to_o open_v these_o in_o particular_a to_o you_o but_o only_o thus_o much_o in_o short_a to_o show_v you_o how_o the_o world_n be_v convince_v by_o the_o apostle_n ministry_n immediate_o after_o christ_n ascension_n into_o heaven_n the_o world_n be_v then_o convince_v the_o world_n of_o the_o unbelieve_a jew_n be_v convince_v of_o sin_n of_o righteousness_n and_o of_o judgement_n look_v but_o into_o that_o sermon_n act_v 2._o which_o be_v preach_v upon_o the_o occasion_n of_o the_o fall_n down_o of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o come_n of_o the_o comforter_n which_o christ_n promise_v here_o you_o shall_v see_v there_o how_o the_o jew_n be_v convince_v both_o of_o sin_n god_n and_o they_o be_v so_o convince_v at_o this_o word_n that_o they_o do_v not_o gainsay_v it_o but_o be_v prick_v in_o their_o heart_n thus_o they_o be_v convince_v of_o sin_n that_o they_o do_v not_o believe_v in_o christ_n but_o instead_o of_o believe_v they_o murder_v he_o and_o then_o they_o be_v convince_v also_o of_o righteousness_n namely_o of_o christ_n righteousness_n that_o christ_n be_v a_o righteous_a person_n who_o they_o crucify_v and_o slay_v verse_n 22._o you_o man_n of_o israel_n hear_v these_o word_n jesus_n of_o nazareth_n a_o man_n approve_v of_o god_n by_o sign_n and_o wonder_n and_o miracle_n which_o god_n do_v by_o he_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o you_o as_o yourselves_o know_v the_o apostle_n here_o hold_v forth_o that_o he_o be_v a_o righteous_a person_n and_o they_o crucify_v a_o righteous_a person_n and_o what_o have_v they_o to_o say_v against_o this_o no_o they_o be_v silent_a they_o lay_v their_o hand_n upon_o their_o mouth_n and_o afterward_o their_o hand_n come_v upon_o their_o heart_n and_o they_o be_v prick_v at_o the_o heart_n and_o now_o they_o be_v convince_v of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o also_o of_o judgement_n that_o now_o god_n have_v give_v all_o power_n to_o execute_v judgement_n into_o the_o hand_n of_o christ_n unto_o this_o son_n of_o man_n who_o they_o crucify_v and_o slay_v so_o verse_n 24._o who_o god_n have_v raise_v up_o have_v loose_v the_o pain_n of_o death_n because_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o he_o shall_v be_v hold_v of_o it_o he_o overcome_v death_n and_o overcome_v the_o devil_n that_o rejoice_v whereas_o on_o the_o other_o side_n if_o so_o be_v the_o poor_a servant_n of_o christ_n do_v come_v and_o take_v pain_n they_o study_v and_o labour_n and_o hold_v forth_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o you_o and_o people_n come_v and_o receive_v it_o into_o their_o ear_n and_o not_o into_o their_o heart_n no_o good_a do_v upon_o they_o but_o they_o remain_v as_o carnal_a as_o worldly_a and_o unbelieving_a as_o before_o and_o they_o see_v no_o fruit_n of_o their_o ministry_n this_o be_v the_o grief_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o soul_n they_o labour_v and_o labour_n and_o question_n whether_o the_o lord_n do_v own_o their_o ministry_n or_o no_o they_o have_v cause_n to_o complain_v as_o the_o prophet_n isa_n 49.6_o i_o have_v labour_v in_o vain_a i_o have_v spend_v as_o a_o saviour_n be_v inconsistent_a with_o his_o state_n yet_o he_o have_v a_o principle_n and_o virtual_a power_n to_o have_v believe_v on_o christ_n as_o a_o saviour_n if_o god_n have_v require_v it_o of_o he_o or_o else_o it_o be_v not_o our_o sin_n now_o not_o to_o believe_v on_o christ_n if_o there_o be_v never_o a_o power_n give_v to_o adam_n in_o the_o state_n of_o innocency_n to_o have_v believe_v if_o god_n have_v require_v it_o of_o he_o for_o we_o be_v now_o condemn_v for_o not_o believe_v on_o christ_n the_o power_n be_v once_o give_v we_o though_o we_o have_v lose_v the_o power_n yet_o that_o do_v not_o excuse_v we_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n that_o be_v one_o answer_n but_o 2._o though_o it_o be_v true_a believe_v on_o christ_n be_v not_o express_o require_v in_o the_o first_o commandment_n yet_o notwithstanding_o it_o be_v and_o be_v implicit_o require_v namely_o thus_o it_o be_v and_o be_v require_v in_o the_o first_o commandment_n that_o we_o shall_v slight_v and_o despise_v his_o word_n by_o be_v formal_a and_o careless_a and_o wanton_a and_o profane_v sabbath_n and_o ordinance_n but_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n be_v little_o lay_v to_o heart_n there_o be_v little_a real_a humiliation_n for_o that_o and_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n because_o it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n only_o to_o convince_v of_o this_o sin_n and_o therefore_o as_o we_o do_v desire_v more_o and_o more_o to_o see_v the_o evil_n of_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n true_o we_o have_v need_v to_o look_v up_o for_o the_o spirit_n to_o discover_v it_o to_o we_o that_o all_o that_o we_o can_v do_v can_v never_o please_v god_n unless_o we_o do_v believe_v on_o christ_n whatever_o prayer_n we_o make_v whatever_o duty_n we_o perform_v yet_o all_o do_v not_o please_v god_n but_o we_o must_v be_v accept_v only_o by_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o show_v we_o how_o we_o have_v be_v out_o of_o the_o way_n of_o salvation_n all_o this_o time_n i_o have_v go_v on_o in_o a_o course_n of_o duty_n and_o performance_n in_o a_o way_n of_o moral_a righteousness_n but_o i_o have_v be_v out_o of_o the_o way_n of_o life_n and_o salvation_n all_o this_o time_n if_o the_o spirit_n do_v not_o convince_v we_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v convince_v of_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n it_o be_v not_o all_o that_o i_o have_v speak_v nor_o all_o that_o all_o the_o saint_n in_o the_o world_n can_v speak_v in_o lay_v open_a this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n that_o can_v convince_v we_o of_o it_o except_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n come_v and_o convince_v of_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n therefore_o look_v up_o for_o the_o spirit_n and_o wait_v for_o the_o spirit_n to_o be_v give_v out_o to_o convince_v we_o of_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n that_o be_v the_o first_o 2._o to_o end_v all_o hereby_o we_o may_v come_v in_o some_o measure_n to_o discern_v our_o spiritual_a estate_n and_o condition_n whether_o we_o be_v in_o a_o way_n of_o salvation_n or_o no_o brethren_n you_o may_v see_v it_o plain_o in_o the_o text_n say_v christ_n i_o will_v send_v the_o spirit_n and_o he_o shall_v convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n of_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n in_o order_n to_o salvation_n well_o then_o consider_v i_o pray_v serious_o between_o the_o lord_n and_o your_o own_o soul_n whether_o or_o no_o you_o have_v be_v convince_v of_o sin_n and_o especial_o of_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n have_v the_o holy_a ghost_n discover_v the_o evil_a of_o this_o sin_n to_o you_o i_o pray_v consider_v serious_o of_o it_o for_o this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o order_n to_o salvation_n to_o convince_v of_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n objection_n you_o will_v say_v suppose_v have_v convince_v i_o that_o i_o have_v be_v give_v to_o lie_v to_o purloin_v defraud_v and_o steal_v from_o parent_n and_o master_n and_o i_o have_v be_v convince_v of_o sabbath-breaking_a etc._n etc._n answer_v but_o i_o pray_v consider_v have_v you_o ever_o be_v convince_v of_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n i_o pray_v consider_v it_o serious_o what_o of_o the_o evil_a of_o unbelief_n have_v the_o spirit_n discover_v to_o you_o i_o tell_v you_o brethren_n if_o so_o be_v you_o have_v not_o be_v convince_v and_o see_v something_o of_o the_o evil_a of_o unbelief_n true_o you_o have_v cause_n to_o question_v whether_o ever_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v be_v at_o work_n upon_o you_o in_o order_n to_o salvation_n let_v i_o tell_v you_o plain_o and_o i_o pray_v bear_v with_o i_o you_o may_v have_v be_v convince_v of_o sin_n and_o yet_o the_o spirit_n have_v never_o be_v at_o work_n upon_o you_o in_o order_n to_o salvation_n no_o when_o the_o spirit_n do_v work_v in_o order_n to_o salvation_n it_o do_v soon_o or_o late_a convince_v of_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n therefore_o if_o you_o be_v persuade_v that_o the_o spirit_n have_v be_v at_o work_n upon_o your_o heart_n in_o convince_a you_o of_o sin_n in_o order_n to_o salvation_n then_o wait_v for_o it_o and_o look_v that_o the_o spirit_n shall_v discover_v this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n to_o you_o wait_v for_o it_o for_o the_o spirit_n will_v go_v on_o if_o he_o have_v begin_v a_o convince_a work_n in_o order_n to_o salvation_n and_o eternal_a life_n he_o will_v convince_v you_o of_o the_o evil_a of_o unbelief_n soon_o or_o late_a you_o will_v be_v bring_v in_o some_o measure_n to_o see_v the_o real_a evil_n and_o sinfulness_n of_o it_o therefore_o look_v and_o wait_v for_o it_o and_o then_o also_o wait_v for_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o convince_v you_o of_o righteousness_n for_o so_o it_o follow_v in_o the_o next_o word_n i_o will_v send_v the_o spirit_n and_o when_o he_o be_v come_v he_o shall_v convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n because_o they_o believe_v not_o on_o i_o and_o of_o righteousness_n because_o i_o go_v to_o the_o father_n and_o you_o see_v i_o no_o more_o but_o thus_o much_o shall_v suffice_v for_o this_o time_n the_o holy_a ghost_n reveal_v christ_n righteousness_n sermon_n vii_o john_n 16.10_o of_o righteousness_n because_o i_o go_v to_o my_o father_n and_o you_o of_o sin_n say_v christ_n ay_o but_o he_o do_v not_o stop_v there_o but_o go_v on_o also_o to_o convince_v of_o righteousness_n brethren_n it_o be_v the_o first_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o of_o god_n in_o his_o very_a conception_n he_o be_v conceive_v and_o bear_v without_o sin_n say_v the_o angel_n to_o the_o virgin_n mary_n that_o holy_a thing_n that_o shall_v be_v bear_v of_o thou_o own_o he_o have_v sin_n enough_o lay_v upon_o he_o impute_v to_o he_o but_o he_o have_v no_o sin_n of_o his_o own_o there_o be_v no_o guile_n find_v in_o his_o mouth_n he_o do_v always_o those_o thing_n that_o please_v the_o father_n john_n 28.29_o he_o never_o speak_v one_o idle_a word_n no_o but_o say_v he_o whatever_o i_o speak_v i_o have_v it_o by_o commmandment_n from_o my_o father_n that_o if_o ever_o we_o be_v accept_v of_o god_n it_o must_v be_v through_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n 1._o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v plain_o and_o express_o hold_v forth_o this_o to_o we_o in_o scripture_n see_v a_o few_o scripture_n for_o it_o isa_n 42.21_o the_o lord_n be_v well_o please_v for_o his_o righteousness_n sake_n a_o very_a gracious_a and_o bless_a word_n the_o lord_n be_v well_o please_v for_o his_o own_o righteousness_n sake_n not_o for_o that_o which_o be_v our_o own_o for_o you_o know_v god_n righteousness_n and_o our_o own_o righteousness_n be_v two_o distinct_a thing_n and_o contrary_a but_o the_o lord_n be_v well_o please_v for_o his_o own_o righteousness_n sake_n the_o righteousness_n of_o his_o own_o son_n and_o that_o be_v his_o own_o righteousness_n run_v on_o in_o that_o way_n to_o look_v for_o the_o life_n of_o our_o soul_n mere_o by_o our_o own_o righteousness_n this_o be_v the_o stumble_a stone_n that_o the_o jew_n stumble_v at_o this_o be_v the_o great_a rock_n of_o offence_n rom._n 9.31_o 32_o 33._o say_v he_o the_o gentile_n which_o follow_v not_o after_o righteousness_n have_v attain_v righteousness_n but_o the_o jew_n which_o follow_v after_o righteousness_n have_v not_o attain_v righteousness_n why_o so_o because_o the_o jew_n stumble_v at_o that_o stumble_a stone_n they_o seek_v after_o righteousness_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n they_o seek_v to_o be_v righteous_a with_o their_o own_o righteousness_n and_o therefore_o mark_v what_o he_o say_v chap._n 10.3_o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n righteousness_n
