A89544 The reformed gentleman, or, The old English morals rescued from the immoralities of the present age shewing how inconsistent those pretended genteel accomplishments of [brace] swearing, drinking, [brace] whoring and Sabbath-breaking are with the true generosity of an English man : being vices not only contrary to the law of God and the constitutions of our government both ecclesiastical and civil, but such as cry loud for vengeance without a speedy reformation : to which is added a modest advice to ministers and civil magistrates, with an abridgement of the laws relating thereto, the King's proclamation and Queens letter to the justices of Middlesex, with their several orders thereupon / by A.M. of the Church of England. righteousness_n and_o sanctify_v his_o most_o holy_a day_n let_v we_o break_v off_o our_o sin_n by_o repentance_n and_o stop_v those_o judgement_n which_o threaten_v we_o who_o know_v but_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v mercy_n and_o will_v repent_v he_o of_o the_o evil_a that_o he_o have_v design_v against_o we_o that_o he_o will_v dispel_v the_o cloud_n and_o make_v the_o sun_n of_o peace_n and_o righteousness_n to_o break_v out_o upon_o we_o make_v we_o rejoice_v for_o the_o time_n wherein_o we_o have_v suffer_v adversity_n to_o this_o end_v it_o will_v not_o be_v amiss_o to_o cry_v out_o from_o hardness_n of_o heart_n from_o contempt_n of_o thy_o holy_a word_n and_o commandment_n from_o fornication_n and_o all_o other_o deadly_a sin_n from_o intemperance_n and_o profane_v of_o thy_o most_o holy_a day_n from_o all_o the_o judgement_n which_o we_o have_v most_o righteous_o deserve_v from_o lightning_n and_o tempest_n from_o plague_n pestilence_n and_o famine_n from_o battle_n confirm_v and_o strengthen_v we_o in_o all_o goodness_n and_o bring_v we_o at_o length_n to_o life_n eternal_a amen_n amen!_o a_o modest_a advice_n to_o the_o minister_n and_o civil_a magistrate_n to_o make_v the_o precede_a discourse_n the_o more_o effectual_a it_o may_v perhaps_o be_v expect_v that_o i_o shall_v add_v something_o to_o the_o minister_n and_o civil_a magistrate_n of_o this_o church_n and_o kingdom_n and_o that_o i_o shall_v show_v how_o far_o both_o of_o they_o be_v oblige_v in_o their_o several_a station_n the_o one_o by_o the_o sword_n of_o the_o spirit_n the_o other_o by_o that_o of_o justice_n to_o do_v what_o in_o they_o lie_v to_o suppress_v the_o reign_v immorality_n of_o the_o present_a age_n of_o which_o the_o vice_n speak_v against_o in_o the_o forego_n treatise_n be_v not_o the_o least_o in_o reality_n though_o they_o may_v be_v so_o in_o all_o outward_a appearance_n by_o reason_n of_o that_o little_a notice_n the_o unthinking_a world_n take_v of_o they_o to_o the_o minister_n of_o our_o church_n there_o be_v a_o very_a little_a need_n to_o say_v any_o thing_n for_o beside_o those_o worthy_a and_o reverend_a prelate_n who_o god_n providence_n and_o the_o care_n and_o piety_n of_o our_o prince_n have_v place_v at_o the_o helm_n there_o be_v a_o clergy_n under_o they_o that_o for_o learning_n virtue_n and_o sincere_a not_o mere_o formal_a devotion_n we_o may_v dare_v all_o the_o church_n in_o christendom_n to_o show_v its_o equal_a our_o whole_a nation_n and_o especial_o the_o metropolis_n thereof_o have_v many_o of_o those_o pious_a soul_n who_o life_n and_o doctrine_n go_v hand_n in_o hand_n to_o stem_v that_o torrent_n of_o atheism_n and_o profaneness_n which_o have_v of_o late_a year_n be_v so_o impetuous_o break_v in_o upon_o we_o their_o practical_a preach_v and_o moral_a but_o withal_o most_o excellent_a discourse●_n now_o in_o print_n concern_v the_o reasonableness_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n the_o loveliness_n of_o all_o that_o be_v good_a and_o virtuous_a and_o the_o deformity_n of_o all_o that_o be_v bad_a and_o vicious_a with_o the_o like_a be_v sufficient_a proof_n of_o their_o zeal_n for_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n and_o the_o good_a of_o his_o church_n so_o that_o we_o shall_v wrong_v they_o if_o we_o think_v they_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o instruction_n to_o direct_v they_o or_o of_o motive_n to_o incite_v they_o to_o do_v a_o duty_n which_o be_v so_o incumbent_a upon_o they_o as_o to_o press_v home_o for_o a_o reformation_n of_o this_o degenerate_a kingdom_n when_o the_o glory_n of_o their_o great_a master_n be_v so_o near_o concern_v therein_o but_o amid_o these_o excellent_a person_n there_o be_v it_o must_v be_v confess_v some_o other_o that_o give_v too_o open_a a_o scandal_n to_o our_o holy_a religion_n by_o their_o vile_a principle_n and_o their_o vile_a practice_n some_o of_o these_o be_v notorious_o bad_a and_o live_v in_o direct_a opposition_n to_o what_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o preach_v to_o other_o whilst_o other_o spend_v their_o time_n in_o dry_a notion_n and_o insipid_a controversy_n which_o profit_n their_o congregation_n but_o very_o little_a if_o any_o thing_n at_o all_o as_o for_o the_o first_o if_o the_o common_a obligation_n they_o lie_v under_o as_o man_n endue_v with_o reasonable_a soul_n if_o the_o ordinary_a tie_n of_o christianity_n they_o be_v bind_v with_o in_o their_o baptism_n or_o if_o the_o extraordinary_a one_o they_o be_v oblige_v with_o in_o their_o ordination_n be_v not_o of_o force_n to_o put_v they_o upon_o mend_v these_o their_o irregularity_n yet_o it_o be_v hope_v the_o example_n of_o the_o more_o strict_a and_o conscientious_a will_v shame_v they_o to_o some_o degree_n of_o fervour_n and_o cause_v they_o to_o put_v on_o the_o form_n at_o least_o if_o they_o will_v hot_a the_o power_n of_o godliness_n but_o if_o that_o will_v do_v no_o good_a upon_o they_o yet_o it_o be_v presume_v the_o worthy_a father_n of_o the_o church_n will_v by_o their_o care_n and_o inspection_n either_o remove_v those_o that_o be_v a_o public_a shame_n unto_o it_o or_o else_o prevent_v the_o like_a mischief_n for_o the_o future_a by_o admit_v none_o into_o holy_a order_n but_o such_o as_o they_o have_v sufficient_a testimony_n of_o that_o they_o will_v not_o by_o their_o unsanctified_a life_n give_v cause_n for_o the_o contempt_n of_o the_o clergy_n i_o say_v it_o be_v presume_v the_o bishop_n will_v in_o their_o several_a diocese_n take_v care_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o confidence_n i_o ground_n upon_o those_o many_o excellent_a charge_n which_o have_v of_o late_o be_v give_v in_o many_o visitation_n after_o all_o this_o i_o can_v but_o wonder_v how_o any_o one_o can_v so_o far_o offer_v violence_n to_o his_o reason_n and_o conscience_n as_o to_o live_v in_o the_o wilful_a breach_n of_o any_o know_a duty_n when_o he_o have_v so_o many_o upbraid_n from_o all_o hand_n to_o they_o sacred_a writ_n will_v sufficient_o inform_v they_o and_o what_o a_o weight_n lie_v upon_o their_o shoulder_n though_o at_o present_a so_o little_o regard_v by_o they_o bishop_n burnet_n
