go_v about_o to_o circumvent_v they_o and_o so_o to_o compass_v and_o effect_v their_o destruction_n yet_o will_v not_o this_o our_o mortal_a enemy_n give_v over_o but_o with_o this_o new_a and_o fresh_a encounter_n begin_v again_o to_o make_v his_o assault_n have_v not_o god_n say_v he_o promise_v unto_o his_o servant_n prosperity_n satan_n a_o assault_n of_o satan_n peace_n &_o good_a and_o happy_a success_n and_o have_v he_o not_o make_v his_o covenant_n with_o they_o to_o deliver_v and_o save_v they_o out_o of_o these_o extremity_n answ_n answ_n no_o doubt_n he_o have_v thus_o promise_v and_o he_o have_v thus_o covenant_v indeed_o but_o yet_o his_o promise_n and_o covenant_n be_v not_o so_o make_v as_o that_o affliction_n shall_v not_o touch_v the_o servant_n of_o god_n at_o all_o but_o rather_o in_o this_o sense_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o hurt_v or_o overcome_v they_o for_o he_o will_v acquit_v and_o free_v his_o faithful_a servant_n from_o that_o tyrannous_a power_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n what_o be_v this_o which_o you_o say_v do_v you_o think_v then_o that_o death_n and_o sin_n shall_v never_o befall_v unto_o they_o this_o be_v absurd_a indeed_o be_v of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n but_o forsomuch_o as_o the_o same_o have_v be_v touch_v before_o i_o will_v not_o stay_v hereupon_o the_o second_o have_v a_o necessity_n join_v thereunto_o that_o of_o necessity_n it_o must_v be_v so_o do_v require_v a_o more_o large_a discourse_n &_o further_a proof_n which_o by_o god_n assistance_n shall_v be_v do_v and_o that_o i_o hope_v in_o such_o manner_n as_o that_o the_o truth_n shall_v easy_o appear_v to_o stand_v full_o and_o altogether_o against_o satan_n and_o his_o wicked_a policy_n in_o this_o pain_n take_v i_o may_v urge_v that_o excellent_a say_n of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n 3.12_o 2._o tim._n 3.12_o that_o whosoever_o will_v live_v godly_a in_o christ_n jesus_n must_v suffer_v persecution_n but_o i_o know_v that_o the_o adversary_n will_v be_v very_o carne_a to_o cavil_n against_o i_o and_o take_v exception_n against_o this_o doctrine_n and_o place_n of_o paul_n say_v that_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v understand_v of_o any_o punishment_n for_o sin_n as_o those_o affliction_n which_o be_v lay_v upon_o he_o but_o for_o well-doing_n but_o i_o insist_v with_o this_o interrogation_n be_v it_o not_o more_o unlikely_a that_o the_o servant_n of_o christ_n shall_v suffer_v for_o well-doing_n then_o for_o evil_a and_o if_o god_n suffer_v they_o to_o be_v evil_o entreat_v and_o persecute_v of_o the_o world_n and_o that_o even_o then_o when_o they_o do_v well_o how_o much_o more_o shall_v he_o do_v it_o when_o they_o shall_v sin_v and_o offend_v against_o he_o hereunto_o thou_o will_v haply_o answer_v that_o this_o be_v likely_a indeed_o but_o yet_o thou_o find_v most_o common_o the_o example_n of_o the_o great_a misery_n in_o god_n servant_n to_o have_v come_v not_o so_o much_o of_o sin_n as_o in_o the_o be_v their_o grief_n weigh_v and_o their_o misery_n lay_v together_o in_o the_o balance_n it_o will_v be_v heavy_a than_o the_o sand_n of_o the_o sea_n be_v i_o able_a to_o conceive_v they_o as_o other_o sometime_o feel_v they_o and_o to_o think_v they_o as_o other_o often_o find_v they_o in_o themselves_o yet_o can_v i_o never_o sufficient_o describe_v they_o well_o i_o may_v in_o some_o sort_n touch_v they_o but_o they_o only_o can_v sound_v the_o depth_n and_o reach_v the_o bottom_n of_o these_o extremity_n which_o have_v sometime_o taste_v and_o in_o some_o measure_n feel_v the_o bitterness_n of_o this_o gall_n and_o wormwood_n notwithstanding_o as_o by_o the_o outward_a appearance_n of_o the_o wound_n the_o inward_a pain_n may_v be_v conjecture_v and_o by_o the_o external_a struggle_n we_o may_v guess_v the_o internal_a conflict_n effect_n the_o greatness_n of_o these_o extremity_n discern_v in_o part_n by_o the_o effect_n so_o likewise_o by_o the_o effect_n that_o alike_o in_o all_o because_o they_o feel_v not_o the_o present_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n within_o they_o and_o the_o pulse_n of_o faith_n to_o move_v and_o beat_v in_o their_o heart_n they_o stick_v not_o peremptory_o and_o without_o exception_n to_o conclude_v upon_o themselves_o say_v i_o have_v no_o faith_n i_o can_v believe_v and_o therefore_o i_o can_v be_v save_v my_o sin_n can_v be_v pardon_v i_o be_o but_o a_o reprobate_n and_o a_o damn_a castaway_n so_o that_o this_o motion_n be_v not_o only_o find_v in_o such_o as_o have_v a_o utter_a defect_n and_o want_n of_o faith_n but_o also_o oftentimes_o in_o those_o which_o have_v a_o faith_n who_o although_o as_o i_o have_v say_v they_o have_v a_o faith_n in_o deed_n yet_o it_o be_v but_o a_o weak_a and_o a_o faint_a faith_n and_o such_o a_o one_o as_o for_o infirmity_n be_v not_o able_a to_o move_v and_o stir_v itself_o for_o as_o the_o man_n that_o be_v in_o a_o swoon_n swoon_n such_o who_o faith_n be_v weak_a compare_v to_o a_o man_n in_o a_o swoon_n or_o he_o who_o part_n be_v benumb_v with_o some_o extreme_a cold_a or_o sudden_a stroke_n though_o there_o be_v a_o life_n still_o remain_v in_o they_o yet_o such_o be_v their_o infirmity_n that_o they_o seem_v as_o dead_a and_o be_v unable_a to_o perform_v the_o function_n that_o belong_v unto_o a_o live_a body_n even_o so_o this_o faith_n though_o in_o truth_n it_o be_v a_o faith_n and_o have_v a_o life_n in_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v so_o benumb_a with_o the_o chill_a cold_a of_o sin_n and_o astonish_v with_o the_o stroke_n of_o our_o natural_a imperfection_n that_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v dead_a and_o utter_o void_a of_o vital_a motion_n so_o that_o sin_n unto_o this_o weak_a and_o waver_a soul_n be_v even_o as_o meat_n be_v oftentimes_o to_o he_o that_o surfete_v he_o eat_v it_o with_o delight_n and_o take_v pleasure_n in_o it_o yet_o when_o his_o stomach_n come_v to_o digest_v and_o work_v upon_o it_o the_o strength_n of_o nature_n be_v not_o able_a to_o overcome_v the_o abundance_n of_o unconcoct_v humour_n the_o whole_a body_n be_v sick_a and_o weaken_a in_o every_o part_n and_o faculty_n so_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v glut_v and_o
be_v incident_a indeed_o to_o the_o elect_a and_o choose_v of_o god_n so_o on_o the_o contrary_a the_o three_o former_a despair_n disquiet_v of_o conscience_n and_o fear_n do_v appertain_v to_o the_o reprobate_n and_o these_o i_o do_v find_v within_o myself_o and_o how_o can_v it_o then_o any_o otherwise_o be_v but_o that_o i_o be_o a_o castaway_n answ_n i_o omit_v to_o repeat_v what_o before_o agony_n yet_o all_o to_o this_o end_n that_o he_o may_v hereby_o full_o heal_v we_o and_o whole_o recover_v we_o to_o a_o perfect_a health_n in_o christ_n and_o here_o let_v not_o any_o man_n demand_v the_o question_n see_v this_o be_v so_o apparent_a why_o god_n deal_v as_o you_o term_v it_o so_o rongh_o and_o extreme_o with_o some_o and_o more_o mild_o with_o other_o for_o it_o be_v not_o because_o he_o less_o love_v some_o than_o he_o love_v other_o or_o less_o pity_v some_o than_o he_o pity_v other_o as_o though_o in_o this_o deal_n he_o be_v more_o favourable_a to_o some_o than_o he_o be_v to_o other_o for_o the_o physician_n may_v be_v equal_o and_o like_v affect_v unto_o the_o good_a estate_n and_o health_n of_o all_o though_o in_o cure_v all_o he_o use_v not_o the_o same_o medicine_n and_o measure_n of_o medicine_n in_o their_o recovery_n and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o god_n deal_v towards_o us._n therefore_o though_o we_o find_v that_o god_n do_v deal_v with_o we_o more_o rough_o and_o sharp_o than_o he_o have_v do_v or_o do_v with_o other_o in_o their_o conversion_n yet_o let_v no_o man_n take_v this_o unto_o his_o heart_n as_o a_o cause_n of_o distrust_n of_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n which_o work_v all_o according_a to_o his_o own_o will_n and_o pleasure_n and_o in_o such_o manner_n as_o to_o his_o wisdom_n appear_v best_a and_o most_o behooveful_a for_o his_o servant_n and_o for_o the_o advancement_n of_o his_o own_o glory_n experience_n teach_v we_o that_o although_o the_o chirurgeon_n heal_v some_o wound_n with_o a_o gentle_a plaster_n yet_o furtherance_n of_o his_o glory_n and_o benefit_n of_o his_o child_n and_o that_o after_o one_o sort_n with_o one_o and_o otherwise_o with_o another_o and_o not_o alike_o with_o all_o in_o their_o conversion_n and_o yet_o so_o with_o every_o one_o as_o in_o his_o wisdom_n he_o see_v to_o be_v best_a and_o most_o effectual_a for_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o their_o salvation_n but_o this_o in_o general_n chap._n vii_o of_o special_a thing_n in_o man_n conversion_n 2_o in_o more_o special_a in_o the_o course_n and_o case_n of_o man_n conversion_n be_v matter_n so_o hard_a and_o difficult_a to_o be_v discern_v and_o judge_v and_o faith_n in_o such_o sort_n grow_v and_o creep_v on_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n that_o though_o the_o truth_n thereof_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n yet_o because_o it_o do_v not_o lively_o manifest_v itself_o by_o plain_a effect_n we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o discern_v and_o know_v it_o for_o as_o the_o corn_n chit_v and_o continual_o grow_v in_o the_o earth_n and_o we_o see_v not_o how_o neither_o be_v we_o able_a at_o the_o first_o show_n to_o make_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o good_a corn_n and_o grass_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o corn_n be_v in_o itself_o come_v indeed_o so_o faith_n when_o it_o be_v first_o hatch_v and_o begin_v in_o our_o heart_n come_v forth_o in_o such_o sort_n that_o it_o can_v easy_o be_v descry_v
thereof_o for_o if_o he_o see_v it_o but_o chit_v in_o the_o ground_n he_o rest_v patient_o for_o the_o time_n content_v expect_v and_o look_v for_o a_o happy_a and_o a_o plentiful_a harvest_n in_o due_a time_n to_o follow_v upon_o his_o labour_n so_o thou_o although_o at_o the_o first_o thou_o find_v such_o a_o small_a growth_n of_o these_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o thou_o yet_o despair_n not_o for_o if_o they_o be_v as_o yet_o but_o chit_v and_o do_v appear_v in_o thy_o eye_n very_o small_a stay_v the_o time_n with_o patience_n and_o assure_v thyself_o that_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o time_n will_v give_v a_o further_a blessing_n and_o what_o if_o thy_o peace_n thy_o joy_n and_o comfort_n be_v not_o grow_v to_o such_o perfection_n yet_o if_o thou_o find_v in_o thyself_o in_o these_o which_o with_o many_o of_o they_o be_v full_a oft_o and_o every_o day_n answ_n whereunto_o may_v be_v answer_v 29.13_o esay_n 29.13_o that_o this_o be_v not_o to_o come_v and_o approach_v to_o god_n for_o though_o with_o their_o mouth_n they_o draw_v near_o and_o honour_n god_n with_o their_o lip_n yet_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o away_o neither_o do_v their_o prayer_n howsoever_o they_o make_v a_o outward_a show_n proceed_v from_o any_o good_a affection_n of_o the_o heart_n as_o have_v a_o desire_n and_o longing_n to_o obtain_v the_o thing_n which_o they_o pray_v for_o but_o only_o be_v hypocritical_o use_v for_o a_o show_n and_o fashion_n sake_n and_o therefore_o do_v not_o in_o truth_n deserve_v the_o name_n of_o prayer_n since_o it_o be_v only_o outwardlabour_v of_o the_o lip_n for_o he_o that_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n as_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v must_v do_v it_o with_o a_o true_a heart_n 10.22_o heb._n 10.22_o as_o witness_v the_o apostle_n heb._n 10.22_o in_o which_o sort_n all_o they_o do_v which_o be_v thorough_o break_v under_o sin_n in_o their_o heart_n do_v loath_a it_o be_v weary_a of_o it_o desire_v to_o be_v release_v and_o free_v from_o it_o and_o to_o place_n and_o set_v down_o my_o four_o position_n as_o a_o resolute_a and_o a_o undoubted_a truth_n which_o be_v this_o that_o the_o greatness_n &_o continuance_n of_o misery_n and_o affliction_n position_n the_o four_o position_n nor_o the_o delay_n which_o it_o please_v god_n to_o use_v in_o show_v forth_o his_o help_n be_v good_a difference_n betwixt_o the_o judgment_n of_o the_o elect_a and_o reprobate_n in_o this_o life_n &_o therefore_o as_o may_v be_v well_o add_v not_o sufficient_a reason_n to_o prove_v that_o a_o man_n be_v exclude_v and_o bar_v from_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n if_o it_o be_v so_o that_o god_n be_v at_o the_o appointment_n of_o any_o other_o and_o that_o any_o shall_v or_o may_v prescribe_v unto_o he_o any_o order_n to_o be_v observe_v in_o his_o do_n than_o this_o reason_n of_o satan_n do_v carry_v some_o force_n with_o it_o but_o since_o his_o power_n and_o authority_n be_v so_o absolute_a that_o he_o be_v to_o order_v all_o thing_n after_o his_o own_o pleasure_n and_o to_o be_v order_v by_o none_o satan_n reason_n must_v needs_o fall_v to_o the_o ground_n as_o in_o all_o other_o the_o do_n of_o god_n so_o in_o this_o also_o the_o will_n of_o god_n must_v stand_v for_o a_o sufficient_a reason_n to_o satisfy_v we_o withal_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v observe_v that_o god_n do_v not_o measure_v our_o misery_n or_o his_o own_o deliverance_n by_o the_o tale_n of_o day_n month_n year_n or_o any_o time_n but_o the_o special_a thing_n that_o he_o therein_o respect_v as_o in_o all_o other_o his_o action_n be_v first_o his_o own_o glory_n and_o second_o the_o good_a of_o his_o child_n and_o therefore_o for_o the_o advancement_n and_o furtherance_n hereof_o he_o take_v such_o time_n as_o in_o his_o own_o wisdom_n he_o see_v and_o know_v to_o be_v most_o meet_a and_o convenient_a so_o that_o be_v it_o soon_o or_o be_v it_o late_a this_o day_n or_o a_o month_n or_o a_o year_n hence_o all_o be_v one_o to_o he_o howsoever_o it_o appear_v contrary_a to_o us._n now_o whereas_o satan_n seem_v to_o take_v hold_n of_o the_o long_a continuance_n of_o affliction_n it_o be_v to_o no_o purpose_n it_o be_v easy_o prove_v that_o god_n use_v this_o manner_n of_o do_v for_o most_o just_a cause_n know_v unto_o himself_o if_o it_o be_v otherwise_o to_o what_o end_n then_o serve_v the_o exhortation_n so_o leisure_n until_o he_o vouchsafe_v to_o send_v deliverance_n against_o the_o doctrine_n of_o this_o position_n objection_n satan_n objection_n satan_n now_o take_v exception_n and_o in_o this_o manner_n object_v and_o reason_v to_o the_o contrary_a god_n have_v promise_v to_o hear_v when_o man_n cry_v unto_o he_o and_o to_o deliver_v they_o whensoever_o they_o shall_v call_v upon_o he_o be_v some_o thing_n more_o in_o this_o point_n to_o be_v consider_v of_o which_o satan_n here_o crafty_o conceal_v first_o that_o man_n as_o i_o have_v say_v be_v in_o no_o band_n presumptuous_o to_o prescribe_v any_o time_n unto_o god_n wherein_o he_o shall_v perform_v his_o promise_n second_o the_o lord_n do_v know_v what_o be_v most_o meet_a and_o expedient_a for_o we_o and_o therefore_o will_v have_v man_n to_o be_v exercised-und_a the_o cross_n some_o long_a and_o some_o a_o short_a time_n not_o as_o man_n do_v think_v but_o as_o he_o in_o his_o wisdom_n see_v to_o be_v for_o every_o one_o beside_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o scripture_n we_o have_v many_o of_o the_o which_o multitude_n one_o or_o two_o in_o so_o plain_a a_o case_n shall_v suffice_v great_a no_o doubt_n be_v the_o servitude_n and_o bondage_n of_o israel_n in_o egypt_n and_o so_o far_o off_o from_o ease_n thereof_o that_o when_o moses_n and_o aaron_n be_v send_v from_o the_o lord_n for_o their_o deliverance_n estate_n with_o the_o estate_n of_o david_n what_o can_v thou_o find_v in_o thyself_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o continuance_n of_o misery_n and_o affliction_n that_o be_v not_o easy_o find_v in_o david_n and_o what_o in_o respect_n of_o earnest_n cry_v and_o call_v upon_o god_n for_o help_v can_v there_o be_v find_v in_o thou_o that_o be_v not_o in_o he_o nay_o if_o not_o in_o both_o these_o point_n yet_o in_o the_o late_a i_o persuade_v myself_o thou_o be_v far_o inferior_a and_o come_v nothing_o near_o unto_o he_o yet_o this_o prophet_n and_o servant_n of_o the_o lord_n continue_v so_o long_a time_n under_o so_o heavy_a a_o burden_n of_o affliction_n almost_o waste_v and_o consume_v with_o grief_n and_o woe_n and_o cry_v still_o upon_o the_o lord_n although_o he_o find_v no_o comfort_n at_o the_o first_o yet_o be_v he_o not_o utter_o cast_v off_o or_o forsake_v of_o god_n but_o at_o the_o last_o taste_v and_o feel_v the_o help_a hand_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o his_o great_a and_o singular_a comfort_n and_o so_o thou_o also_o although_o thou_o do_v cry_v and_o call_v upon_o the_o lord_n in_o thy_o trouble_n and_o can_v not_o obtain_v thy_o request_n at_o the_o first_o yet_o do_v not_o think_v that_o god_n therefore_o do_v neglect_v thou_o or_o that_o he_o have_v cast_v thou_o off_o for_o ever_o but_o as_o thou_o have_v be_v teach_v before_o submit_v
the_o enemy_n do_v not_o come_v upon_o we_o at_o unaware_o the_o city_n or_o country_n have_v enemy_n encamp_v against_o it_o and_o look_v every_o day_n for_o nothing_o else_o but_o that_o battle_n piece_n may_v stand_v we_o in_o the_o better_a stead_n and_o serve_v our_o turn_n the_o better_a in_o this_o conflict_n first_o therefore_o constancy_n 1._o coat_n of_o constancy_n according_a to_o
