inquire_v of_o by_o the_o house_n of_o israel_n prayer_n be_v a_o general_a mean_n institute_v by_o god_n for_o the_o obtain_n of_o any_o mercy_n but_o i_o say_v suppose_v these_o three_o thing_n that_o a_o child_n of_o god_n keep_v in_o the_o lord_n way_n and_o have_v use_v all_o proper_a mean_n for_o a_o event_n which_o he_o have_v desire_v and_o seek_v the_o lord_n for_o by_o prayer_n this_o doctrine_n of_o divine_a providence_n show_v he_o the_o high_a reason_n imaginable_a for_o his_o commit_v both_o his_o person_n and_o his_o way_n unto_o the_o lord_n without_o any_o anxious_a encouragement_n to_o the_o service_n of_o god_n especial_o to_o eminent_a act_n and_o suffering_n for_o god_n there_o be_v a_o reward_n for_o righteous_a man_n if_o they_o go_v without_o it_o to_o their_o die_a day_n yet_o they_o shall_v be_v recompense_v in_o the_o generation_n of_o the_o just_a heaven_n will_v pay_v for_o all_o but_o god_n do_v not_o always_o take_v so_o long_a a_o day_n to_o recompense_v they_o many_o have_v a_o reward_n in_o this_o life_n and_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v the_o scripture_n be_v full_a of_o promise_n even_o of_o the_o good_a thing_n of_o this_o life_n to_o godliness_n in_o the_o general_a and_o to_o the_o several_a part_n and_o act_n of_o godliness_n these_o promise_n indeed_o be_v not_o make_v good_a to_o every_o child_n of_o god_n in_o specie_fw-la but_o only_o in_o equivalent_a yea_o transcendent_a mercy_n but_o even_o these_o promise_n be_v make_v good_a to_o many_o and_o they_o may_v be_v thy_o portion_n however_o thou_o shall_v not_o miss_v of_o the_o great_a thing_n particular_o this_o lay_v a_o engagement_n upon_o all_o that_o fear_n god_n as_o god_n call_v they_o to_o it_o and_o give_v they_o advantage_n for_o it_o to_o signalise_v themselves_o by_o eminent_a act_n or_o by_o some_o eminent_a suffering_n such_o you_o have_v hear_v god_n ordinary_o pay_v present_o and_o beside_o that_o eternal_a recompense_n which_o they_o have_v in_o glory_n they_o be_v in_o more_o outward_a and_o sensible_a thing_n or_o in_o more_o inward_a influence_n of_o grace_n recompense_v in_o this_o life_n those_o that_o eminent_o honour_n god_n he_o will_v honour_v and_o many_o of_o they_o have_v a_o double_a mess_n send_v they_o from_o the_o lord_n sermon_n xxxi_o psalm_n cvii_o 43._o whoso_o be_v wise_a and_o will_v observe_v these_o thing_n even_o they_o shall_v understand_v the_o lovingkindness_n of_o the_o lord_n i_o be_o proceed_v yet_o in_o my_o observation_n upon_o the_o motion_n of_o divine_a providence_n that_o which_o we_o call_v actual_a providence_n in_o its_o administration_n of_o distributive_a justice_n both_o in_o the_o punishment_n of_o sinner_n and_o the_o reward_v of_o the_o righteous_a shall_v smart_v in_o the_o flesh_n though_o our_o soul_n be_v save_v in_o the_o day_n of_o christ_n but_o if_o there_o be_v any_o hope_n for_o such_o a_o mercy_n it_o be_v certain_o to_o be_v obtain_v man_n be_v not_o hunt_v and_o persecute_v for_o their_o conscience_n towards_o god_n mark_n if_o god_n do_v not_o command_v the_o blessing_n of_o riches_n trade_n etc._n etc._n more_o upon_o the_o latter_a than_o the_o former_a it_o be_v true_a some_o of_o those_o country_n where_o these_o iniquity_n be_v find_v be_v natural_o rich_a than_o other_o in_o mineral_n and_o the_o native_a commodity_n of_o the_o country_n but_o for_o adventitious_a riches_n which_o come_v from_o trade_n and_o commerce_n and_o for_o other_o sensible_a blessing_n observe_v if_o they_o be_v not_o pour_v out_o in_o a_o great_a plenty_n upon_o nation_n that_o in_o matter_n of_o religion_n civil_a justice_n and_o unity_n have_v be_v regulate_v by_o law_n conformable_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n than_o upon_o other_o nation_n where_o none_o of_o these_o thing_n have_v be_v regard_v 2._o if_o you_o will_v straiten_v your_o prospect_n look_v upon_o any_o city_n or_o town_n or_o any_o kind_n of_o political_a society_n you_o will_v see_v some_o of_o these_o place_n such_o as_o egypt_n be_v of_o which_o abraham_n say_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n be_v not_o in_o that_o place_n where_o all_o their_o religion_n be_v to_o persecute_v those_o that_o have_v any_o thing_n of_o religion_n in_o they_o no_o rule_n of_o justice_n and_o brotherly_a love_n be_v observe_v but_o they_o be_v full_a of_o particular_a person_n but_o it_o be_v no_o more_o than_o every_o one_o may_v observe_v consider_v what_o a_o hell_n upon_o earth_n some_o city_n some_o family_n be_v in_o comparison_n of_o other_o and_o see_v what_o make_v the_o difference_n both_o in_o the_o beauty_n and_o in_o the_o prosperity_n of_o they_o and_o it_o needs_o must_v be_v so_o if_o you_o please_v to_o consider_v 1._o the_o some_o for_o the_o declaration_n of_o his_o justice_n thus_o you_o see_v this_o motion_n of_o providence_n be_v easy_o reconcileable_a to_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n upon_o this_o hypothesis_n that_o child_n be_v sinner_n and_o under_o a_o original_a guilt_n and_o if_o we_o can_v be_v so_o confident_a as_o some_o be_v that_o none_o shall_v be_v damn_v for_o that_o sin_n only_o or_o that_o it_o be_v expiate_v on_o the_o behalf_n of_o all_o or_o wash_v away_o in_o baptism_n as_o to_o all_o bear_v within_o the_o pale_a of_o the_o church_n yet_o nothing_o hinder_v but_o by_o the_o same_o justice_n by_o which_o god_n punish_v past_a and_o pardon_v sin_n which_o i_o have_v former_o at_o large_a open_v to_o you_o god_n may_v yet_o just_o trouble_v and_o afflict_v little_a one_o they_o hour_n of_o life_n how_o much_o we_o depend_v upon_o he_o for_o our_o daily_a breath_n as_o well_o as_o for_o daily_a bread_n now_o it_o be_v but_o reasonable_a that_o the_o world_n shall_v understand_v god_n to_o be_v the_o fountain_n of_o life_n that_o sickness_n and_o death_n do_v not_o mere_o depend_v upon_o second_o cause_n but_o there_o be_v a_o first_o cause_n that_o be_v the_o efficient_a the_o principal_a efficient_a cause_n of_o these_o change_n though_o he_o use_v a_o variety_n of_o second_o cause_n he_o will_v therefore_o suffer_v irregular_a motion_n of_o humour_n in_o house_n of_o jeroboam_n as_o he_o threaten_v vers_fw-la 10_o 11_o 12._o he_o intend_v to_o take_v away_o the_o remnant_n of_o the_o house_n of_o jeroboam_n as_o a_o man_n take_v away_o dung_n from_o the_o earth_n abijah_n fall_v sick_a and_o die_v and_o this_o out_o of_o mercy_n to_o he_o that_o his_o eye_n may_v not_o see_v nor_o he_o have_v any_o share_n in_o the_o evil_n which_o god_n be_v about_o to_o bring_v upon_o his_o father_n house_n god_n gather_v up_o the_o lamb_n before_o the_o storm_n come_v it_o be_v say_v of_o babylon_n psal_n 137._o that_o he_o shall_v be_v happy_a that_o shall_v take_v their_o little_a one_o and_o dash_v they_o against_o the_o stone_n and_o we_o read_v in_o scripture_n of_o such_o famine_n as_o enforce_a woman_n to_o eat_v their_o own_o child_n now_o god_n often_o cut_v off_o little_a one_o in_o his_o mercy_n to_o they_o i_o may_v here_o further_o add_v that_o god_n by_o this_o dispensation_n prevent_v much_o sin_n in_o those_o that_o be_v thus_o sin_n that_o his_o child_n by_o bathsheba_n die_v and_o the_o death_n of_o it_o be_v threaten_v by_o nathan_n as_o a_o part_n of_o david_n punishment_n 2_o sam._n 12.14_o possible_o god_n may_v bite_n of_o beast_n to_o the_o plant_n which_o discourage_n the_o growth_n of_o they_o though_o they_o be_v not_o internal_a cause_n yet_o they_o be_v external_a cause_n of_o the_o plant_n unthriftiness_n so_o it_o be_v with_o long_a and_o violent_a temptation_n they_o indeed_o do_v not_o work_v as_o internal_a cause_n i_o mean_v such_o temptation_n as_o be_v ab_fw-la host_n from_o our_o grand_a adversary_n to_o hinder_v a_o christian_n growth_n but_o they_o be_v great_a external_a cause_n discourage_v the_o soul_n in_o almost_o all_o its_o exercise_n of_o communion_n with_o god_n and_o application_n of_o itself_o unto_o he_o 5._o last_o any_o desertion_n or_o with-drawing_n of_o divine_a influence_n be_v great_a cause_n there_o be_v few_o plant_n which_o grow_v much_o in_o the_o shade_n ordinary_o the_o influence_n of_o heaven_n both_o of_o the_o sun_n and_o the_o rain_n be_v necessary_a to_o the_o growth_n of_o the_o plant_n i_o be_o sure_a the_o influence_n of_o the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n be_v necessary_a to_o the_o spiritual_a growth_n of_o a_o good_a christian_a and_o if_o they_o be_v with-drawn_a though_o the_o soul_n may_v live_v yet_o during_o the_o withholdings_a of_o they_o it_o will_v not_o much_o grow_v or_o thrive_v the_o soul_n will_v live_v during_o the_o withdraw_a of_o they_o for_o i_o have_v once_o and_o again_o tell_v you_o that_o the_o lord_n never_o withdraw_v what_o of_o his_o spiritual_a influence_n upon_o the_o soul_n be_v necessary_a to_o uphold_v and_o maintain_v the_o spiritual_a union_n and_o life_n but_o no_o soul_n flourish_v and_o increase_v much_o under_o such_o a_o dispensation_n it_o stand_v in_o the_o shadow_n and_o want_v those_o beam_n which_o be_v necessary_a to_o its_o bear_n and_o bring_v forth_o much_o fruit_n these_o now_o be_v the_o great_a cause_n of_o that_o variety_n which_o we_o discern_v in_o christian_n growth_n other_o cause_n may_v be_v assign_v but_o this_o be_v sufficient_a suppose_v god_n to_o have_v appoint_v the_o use_n of_o mean_n in_o order_n to_o a_o spiritual_a growth_n and_o ordinary_o to_o concur_v with_o the_o use_n of_o those_o mean_n to_o justify_v divine_a providence_n in_o not_o equal_o make_v every_o soul_n to_o grow_v there_o be_v yet_o one_o question_n more_o which_o indeed_o do_v not_o proper_o concern_v this_o place_n in_o which_o i_o be_o to_o discourse_v concern_v the_o reasonableness_n of_o divine_a providence_n in_o the_o inequal_a distribution_n of_o special_a distinguish_a grace_n yet_o i_o shall_v speak_v something_o too_o viz._n 6_o quest_n whence_o it_o be_v that_o good_a people_n have_v such_o different_a apprehension_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n 1._o that_o which_o make_v the_o difficulty_n in_o the_o apprehension_n of_o this_o be_v 1._o partly_o because_o there_o be_v but_o one_o truth_n one_o faith_n as_o well_o as_o one_o god_n one_o baptism_n etc._n etc._n two_o contradictory_n proposition_n can_v be_v true_a nor_o can_v both_o proceed_v from_o the_o god_n of_o truth_n for_o the_o same_o fountain_n do_v not_o send_v forth_o bitter_a water_n and_o sweet_a one_o and_o the_o same_o god_n can_v speak_v different_a thing_n god_n be_v truth_n and_o every_o truth_n be_v from_o god_n no_o lie_n no_o falsehood_n can_v possible_o be_v from_o god_n 2._o partly_o because_o all_o the_o people_n of_o god_n have_v the_o same_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o be_v call_v the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n dwell_v in_o they_o and_o be_v under_o the_o same_o promise_n of_o this_o holy_a spirit_n lead_v they_o into_o all_o truth_n and_o the_o annointing_n teach_v they_o all_o thing_n 3._o again_o they_o have_v all_o the_o same_o word_n of_o truth_n to_o guide_v they_o and_o to_o examine_v and_o measure_v proposition_n by_o they_o have_v the_o law_n and_o the_o testimony_n and_o that_o be_v the_o standard_n in_o the_o market_n of_o truth_n the_o touchstone_n by_o which_o every_o proposition_n be_v to_o be_v try_v the_o scale_n in_o which_o every_o proposition_n be_v to_o be_v weigh_v yet_o notwithstanding_o this_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o obvious_a than_o that_o even_o such_o who_o if_o we_o may_v judge_v any_o thing_n do_v true_o fear_v god_n have_v strange_o different_a apprehension_n concern_v divine_a truth_n concern_v the_o sacrament_n the_o use_n of_o the_o law_n the_o extent_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n the_o power_n of_o man_n will_n the_o true_a notion_n of_o faith_n etc._n etc._n now_o the_o question_n be_v whence_o this_o variety_n be_v why_o god_n permit_v it_o and_o how_o the_o motion_n of_o divine_a providence_n in_o these_o thing_n may_v appear_v just_a and_o reasonable_a i_o shut_v out_o of_o this_o discourse_n the_o different_a apprehension_n of_o carnal_a wicked_a and_o ungodly_a man_n who_o creed_n be_v common_o dictate_v by_o their_o lust_n and_o their_o whole_a art_n and_o study_n be_v because_o they_o can_v allow_v judgement_n thou_o do_v not_o know_v what_o his_o soul_n suffer_v how_o he_o already_o groan_v under_o this_o burden_n and_o be_v discourage_v under_o this_o distemper_n and_o therefore_o far_o be_v it_o from_o thou_o to_o add_v affliction_n to_o his_o affliction_n god_n have_v receive_v this_o man_n soul_n if_o he_o be_v sincere_a if_o he_o be_v press_v after_o god_n under_o this_o burden_n of_o affliction_n god_n be_v not_o only_o just_a in_o these_o dispensation_n of_o providence_n but_o he_o be_v wise_a also_o just_o he_o be_v as_o he_o by_o they_o punish_v his_o people_n sin_n and_o art_n
