good_a pledge_n or_o security_n etc._n etc._n the_o sense_n however_o be_v plain_a that_o the_o charity_n of_o alm_n be_v one_o of_o the_o best_a way_n of_o secure_v our_o future_a happiness_n and_o yet_o further_o to_o encourage_v we_o to_o abound_v in_o work_n of_o charity_n the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o that_o proportionable_o to_o the_o degree_n of_o our_o charity_n shall_v be_v the_o degree_n of_o our_o reward_n upon_o this_o consideration_n the_o apostle_n exhort_v the_o corinthian_n to_o be_v liberal_a in_o their_o charity_n 2_o cor._n 9_o 6._o he_o that_o sow_v spare_o shall_v reap_v spare_o but_o he_o that_o sow_v bountiful_o shall_v reap_v bountiful_o so_o that_o whatever_o we_o lie_v out_o in_o this_o kind_n be_v to_o the_o great_a advantage_n and_o upon_o the_o best_a security_n two_o consideration_n which_o use_v to_o be_v very_o prevalent_a with_o rich_a man_n to_o lay_v out_o their_o money_n we_o certainiy_a do_v it_o to_o the_o great_a advantage_n because_o god_n will_v consider_v the_o very_o small_a thing_n that_o any_o of_o we_o do_v in_o this_o kind_n he_o that_o shall_v give_v so_o much_o as_o a_o cup_n of_o cold_a water_n to_o a_o disciple_n in_o the_o name_n of_o a_o disciple_n shall_v not_o lose_v his_o reward_n these_o last_o word_n shall_v not_o lose_v his_o reward_n be_v a_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d and_o signify_v much_o more_o than_o they_o seem_v to_o speak_v viz._n that_o he_o shall_v have_v a_o very_a great_a reward_n infinite_o beyond_o the_o value_n of_o what_o he_o have_v do_v and_o we_o do_v it_o likewise_o upon_o the_o best_a security_n so_o solomon_n assure_v we_o prov._n 19.17_o he_o that_o have_v pity_n upon_o the_o poor_a dare_v to_o the_o lord_n and_o that_o which_o he_o have_v give_v will_v he_o pay_v he_o again_o and_o we_o may_v be_v confident_a of_o our_o security_n where_o god_n be_v surety_n nay_o he_o tell_v we_o that_o in_o this_o case_n he_o look_v upon_o himself_o as_o principal_a and_o that_o whatever_o we_o do_v in_o way_n of_o mercy_n and_o charity_n to_o the_o poor_a he_o take_v as_o do_v to_o himself_o so_o our_o lord_n have_v tell_v we_o matt._n 25.40_o and_o we_o shall_v hear_v the_o same_o from_o he_o again_o out_o of_o his_o own_o mouth_n when_o he_o shall_v appear_v in_o his_o majesty_n to_o judge_v the_o world_n then_o the_o king_n shall_v answer_v and_o say_v do_v you_o feed_v i_o or_o do_v you_o not_o i_o be_v naked_a do_v you_o clothe_v i_o or_o do_v you_o not_o i_o be_v sick_a and_o in_o prison_n do_v you_o visit_v i_o or_o do_v you_o not_o not_o but_o that_o all_o the_o good_a or_o evil_n of_o our_o life_n in_o what_o kind_n soever_o shall_v then_o be_v bring_v to_o account_v but_o that_o our_o saviour_n do_v choose_v to_o instance_n particular_o and_o only_o in_o thing_n of_o this_o nature_n shall_v methinks_v make_v a_o mighty_a impression_n upon_o we_o and_o be_v a_o powerful_a consideration_n to_o oblige_v we_o to_o have_v a_o very_a christ_n high_a and_o reverential_a thought_n of_o thou_o in_o our_o mind_n enlarge_a and_o inflame_v affection_n towards_o thou_o etc._n etc._n and_o whensoever_o we_o shall_v come_v to_o leave_v this_o world_n which_o will_v be_v when_o thou_o shall_v appoint_v for_o the_o issue_n of_o life_n and_o death_n be_v in_o thy_o hand_n afford_v we_o such_o a_o mighty_a power_n and_o presence_n of_o good_a reason_n be_v offer_v and_o which_o be_v seldom_o see_v more_o apt_a to_o be_v favourable_a to_o another_o man_n reason_n than_o his_o own_o studious_n and_o inquisitive_a man_n common_o at_o such_o a_o age_n at_o forty_o or_o fifty_o at_o the_o utmost_a have_v fix_v and_o settle_v their_o judgement_n in_o most_o point_n and_o as_o it_o be_v make_v their_o last_o understanding_n suppose_v they_o have_v think_v or_o read_v or_o hear_v what_o can_v be_v say_v on_o all_o side_n of_o thing_n and_o after_o that_o they_o grow_v positive_a and_o impatient_a of_o contradiction_n think_v it_o a_o disparagement_n to_o they_o to_o alter_v their_o judgement_n but_o our_o decease_a friend_n be_v so_o wise_a as_o to_o be_v willing_a to_o learn_v to_o the_o last_o know_v that_o no_o man_n can_v grow_v wise_a without_o some_o change_n of_o his_o mind_n without_o gain_v some_o knowledge_n which_o he_o have_v not_o or_o correct_v some_o error_n which_o he_o have_v before_o he_o have_v attain_v so_o perfect_a a_o mastery_n of_o his_o passion_n that_o for_o the_o latter_a and_o great_a part_n of_o his_o life_n he_o be_v hardly_o ever_o see_v to_o be_v transport_v with_o anger_n and_o as_o he_o be_v extreme_o careful_a not_o to_o provoke_v any_o man_n so_o not_o to_o be_v provoke_v by_o any_o use_v to_o say_v if_o i_o provoke_v a_o man_n he_o be_v the_o worse_a for_o my_o company_n and_o if_o i_o suffer_v myself_o to_o be_v provoke_v by_o he_o i_o shall_v be_v the_o worse_a for_o he_o he_o very_o seldom_o reprove_v any_o person_n in_o company_n otherwise_o than_o by_o silence_n or_o some_o sign_n of_o uneasiness_n or_o some_o very_a soft_a and_o gentle_a word_n which_o yet_o from_o the_o respect_n man_n general_o bear_v to_o he_o do_v often_o prove_v effectual_a for_o he_o
