comfort_n which_o here_o he_o take_v any_o contentment_n in_o so_o his_o depart_a soul_n will_v find_v nothing_o to_o supply_v the_o want_n of_o they_o it_o be_v true_a it_o have_v to_o do_v with_o god_n but_o not_o in_o a_o way_n of_o mercy_n and_o favour_n and_o therefore_o his_o presence_n will_v not_o comfort_v it_o in_o the_o absence_n of_o earthly_a comfort_n the_o spirit_n say_v solomon_n return_v to_o god_n that_o give_v it_o that_o be_v speak_v of_o the_o spirit_n or_o soul_n of_o man_n in_o general_a whether_o good_a or_o bad_a the_o spirit_n of_o a_o good_a man_n return_v to_o god_n as_o to_o a_o gracious_a father_n the_o spirit_n of_o a_o bad_a man_n as_o to_o a_o righteous_a judge_n and_o disposer_n of_o it_o and_o we_o can_v imagine_v that_o the_o soul_n of_o one_o that_o will_v never_o return_v in_o a_o holy_a sense_n in_o his_o life_n time_n shall_v return_v to_o god_n in_o a_o happy_a sense_n when_o his_o life_n be_v end_v for_o he_o will_v recompense_v he_o according_a to_o his_o way_n say_v the_o prophet_n and_o have_v reveal_v his_o wrath_n against_o all_o the_o ungodliness_n and_o unrighteousness_n of_o man_n rom._n 1.18_o it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o unbeliever_n so_o continue_v that_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n abide_v on_o he_o john_n 3.36_o and_o every_o ungodly_a man_n we_o doubt_v not_o be_v a_o unbeliever_n in_o a_o scripture_n sense_n though_o he_o care_v not_o to_o think_v so_o ill_o of_o himself_o and_o what_o wonder_n be_v it_o if_o the_o holy_a one_o show_v his_o high_a displeasure_n against_o the_o depart_a soul_n of_o that_o sinner_n that_o will_v not_o religious_o depart_v from_o evil_a nor_o be_v ever_o reconcile_v through_o jesus_n christ_n now_o what_o a_o dreadful_a case_n will_v this_o be_v what_o a_o terrible_a take_n will_v a_o guilty_a impenitent_a soul_n be_v in_o when_o it_o see_v itself_o in_o the_o region_n of_o eternal_a darkness_n when_o it_o have_v lose_v all_o comfort_n and_o comfortable_a expectation_n and_o shall_v never_o see_v any_o more_o good_a when_o money_n and_o land_n when_o acquaintance_n and_o friend_n when_o time_n and_o hope_n and_o all_o be_v go_v o_o what_o deep_a distress_n what_o substantial_a sorrow_n will_v it_o be_v fill_v with_o when_o it_o be_v compass_v about_o with_o misery_n unchangeable_a and_o utter_o swallow_v up_o without_o help_n or_o hope_n in_o the_o depth_n of_o god_n revenge_a wrath_n consider_v of_o it_o reader_n in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o never_o let_v thy_o soul_n be_v satisfy_v without_o that_o mercy_n and_o grace_n which_o may_v fit_v thou_o to_o escape_v such_o a_o fearful_a condition_n 2._o it_o may_v also_o keep_v we_o from_o wonder_v at_o or_o at_o least_o from_o stumble_v at_o the_o trouble_n of_o true_a obedient_a christian_n in_o this_o world._n they_o come_v on_o they_o many_o time_n thick_a and_o threefold_a as_o we_o call_v it_o and_o be_v so_o far_o from_o move_v the_o careless_a world_n to_o pity_v they_o that_o they_o expose_v they_o rather_o but_o too_o common_o to_o the_o utmost_a scorn_n and_o contempt_n sometime_o also_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o blaspheme_n on_o that_o occasion_n and_o say_v behold_v what_o good_a do_v all_o their_o godliness_n do_v they_o for_o how_o miserable_o do_v they_o live_v and_o who_o be_v there_o round_o about_o that_o have_v more_o sorrow_n and_o grievance_n than_o many_o of_o those_o that_o make_v so_o much_o ado_n about_o religion_n but_o assure_o all_o this_o will_v not_o warrant_v they_o to_o despise_v religion_n or_o those_o that_o love_n and_o follow_v it_o for_o beside_o other_o consideration_n that_o may_v be_v urge_v namely_o their_o remain_a sinfulness_n which_o make_v the_o chastisement_n of_o their_o heavenly_a father_n needful_a for_o they_o with_o that_o most_o wise_a providence_n and_o fatherly_a love_n that_o order_v and_o limit_v they_o together_o with_o the_o nature_n of_o sin_n itself_o that_o make_v they_o worthy_a of_o more_o and_o great_a suffering_n than_o in_o this_o mortal_a life_n they_o can_v ever_o bear_v death_n eternal_a be_v the_o wage_n of_o sin_n rom_n 6.23_o i_o say_v beside_o these_o and_o the_o like_a consideration_n that_o may_v be_v urge_v the_o shortness_n of_o their_o trouble_n and_o the_o certainty_n of_o their_o soul_n happiness_n after_o death_n may_v abundant_o satisfy_v they_o and_o be_v more_o than_o sufficient_a to_o countervail_v the_o sad_a suffering_n of_o this_o mortal_a state_n as_o will_n far_o be_v evince_v by_o the_o nature_n and_o property_n of_o that_o felicity_n which_o in_o its_o place_n with_o god_n assistance_n i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o explicate_v sect_n x._o be_v a_o persuasive_a to_o several_a great_a duty_n the_o truth_n of_o the_o present_a point_n may_v be_v look_v on_o as_o a_o true_a and_o just_a ground_n for_o christian_a practice_n and_o it_o be_v great_a pity_n but_o people_n shall_v be_v somewhat_o the_o better_a for_o a_o point_n of_o so_o much_o comfort_n and_o encouragement_n to_o goodness_n here_o therefore_o i_o may_v fit_o endeavour_v to_o engage_v myself_o and_o other_o to_o the_o duty_n follow_v 1._o patience_n under_o god_n afflict_a hand_n whether_o by_o outward_a or_o inward_a trouble_n man_n of_o ordinary_a prudence_n can_v follow_v very_o unpleasant_a method_n of_o physic_n from_o the_o mere_a prospect_n of_o that_o ease_n and_o health_n which_o they_o hope_v in_o time_n to_o find_v by_o so_o do_v though_o none_o do_v promise_v they_o health_n much_o less_o assure_v they_o of_o the_o continuance_n of_o it_o how_o shall_v a_o christian_a then_o endeavour_v more_o and_o more_o that_o patience_n may_v have_v its_o perfect_a work_n when_o he_o foresee_v by_o faith_n that_o bless_a rest_n which_o his_o soul_n shall_v have_v after_o death_n have_v seize_v upon_o his_o body_n and_o have_v the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o assure_v he_o that_o this_o happiness_n shall_v never_o end_v but_o be_v complete_v at_o the_o resurrection_n of_o the_o just_a when_o their_o waste_a body_n shall_v forsake_v their_o dark_a prison_n and_o shine_v as_o the_o sun_n in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o their_o father_n mat._n 13.43_o doubt_v not_o but_o christ_n favourable_a presence_n can_v make_v any_o place_n a_o paradise_n for_o delight_n and_o more_o delightful_a than_o the_o earthly_a paradise_n ever_o be_v this_o text_n be_v so_o strong_a on_o our_o side_n that_o our_o great_a opposer_n can_v hardly_o tell_v what_o to_o say_v to_o it_o any_o otherwise_o than_o by_o espouse_v that_o wretched_a evasion_n of_o the_o so_o speedy_o and_o tend_v much_o to_o satisfy_v he_o in_o it_o so_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n colos_n 1.20_o to_o reconcile_v all_o thing_n to_o himself_o whether_o thing_n on_o earth_n or_o thing_n reconcile_v that_o never_o offend_v their_o god_n and_o so_o need_v not_o any_o reconciliation_n and_n there_o be_v in_o that_o chapter_n no_o discourse_n of_o enoch_n and_o elias_n or_o any_o thing_n to_o enforce_v it_o to_o be_v mean_v of_o they_o and_o whether_o the_o express_v it_o by_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d all_o thing_n not_o all_o person_n he_o may_v not_o have_v a_o with_o he_o than_o any_o they_o can_v have_v in_o this_o mortal_a life_n and_o that_o their_o be_v thus_o present_a with_o they_o when_o absent_a from_o the_o body_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v in_o respect_n of_o their_o soul_n be_v that_o which_o need_v not_o to_o be_v prove_v to_o any_o that_o make_v use_v of_o sober_a reason_n and_o be_v willing_a to_o understand_v the_o plain_a word_n and_o

soul_n unite_v for_o these_o be_v call_v man_n and_o not_o spirit_n much_o less_o the_o spirit_n of_o just_a men._n obj._n but_o we_o find_v in_o scripture_n the_o angel_n that_o have_v a_o charge_n over_o the_o faithful_a be_v call_v their_o angel_n and_o why_o may_v they_o not_o be_v call_v their_o spirit_n be_v spirit_n indeed_o ans_fw-fr the_o question_n in_o this_o matter_n be_v not_o whether_o they_o may_v not_o be_v so_o call_v in_o some_o sense_n or_o respect_n but_o whether_o in_o that_o text_n they_o be_v so_o call_v and_o i_o say_v they_o be_v not_o for_o two_o reason_n 1._o in_o their_o separate_a state_n and_o if_o in_o that_o state_n they_o be_v they_o be_v more_o perfect_a than_o before_o they_o be_v they_o must_v certain_o be_v more_o happy_a also_o sect_n v._o the_o the_o time_n of_o their_o die_a and_o how_o can_v we_o think_v it_o will_v be_v say_v bless_a be_v those_o dead_a if_o they_o do_v not_o obtain_v some_o bless_a privilege_n by_o die_v if_o death_n love_n and_o peace_n of_o their_o gracious_a god_n for_o a_o mere_a negative_a or_o privative_a rest_n consist_v in_o a_o bare_a freedom_n from_o pain_n and_o trouble_v be_v no_o more_o than_o the_o beast_n partake_v of_o when_o the_o horse_n be_v dead_a there_o be_v a_o end_n of_o his_o weariness_n as_o well_o as_o his_o work_n and_o i_o hope_v we_o may_v safe_o believe_v that_o a_o dead_a christian_n that_o show_v himself_o such_o in_o his_o life_n be_v in_o a_o better_a state_n present_o after_o death_n than_o a_o dead_a beast_n can_v be_v and_o he_o who_o religion_n be_v any_o thing_n strong_a than_o his_o atheism_n will_v account_v this_o text_n a_o evidence_n of_o it_o and_o this_o shall_v suffice_v for_o confirmation_n of_o the_o point_n and_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o it_o may_v be_v some_o satisfaction_n to_o those_o that_o seek_v the_o truth_n in_o love_n and_o humble_o implore_v the_o guidance_n of_o god_n holy_a spirit_n in_o the_o next_o place_n i_o be_o to_o make_v good_a my_o method_n and_o so_o to_o vindicate_v this_o truth_n from_o exception_n and_o defend_v it_o from_o that_o violence_n which_o some_o have_v offer_v unto_o it_o sect_n vi_o the_o happiness_n of_o just_a man_n soul_n in_o the_o state_n of_o separation_n vindicate_v as_o to_o contend_v for_o the_o truth_n be_v no_o unlawful_a strife_n by_o clear_v and_o confirm_v it_o so_o to_o maintain_v it_o against_o objection_n be_v not_o unnecessary_a and_o i_o know_v not_o whether_o some_o may_v not_o expect_v it_o but_o before_o i_o answer_v man_n cavil_n against_o this_o comfortable_a doctrine_n it_o may_v not_o be_v amiss_o to_o say_v something_o to_o those_o that_o will_v dissuade_v we_o from_o meddle_v with_o matter_n of_o this_o nature_n for_o to_o what_o purpose_n say_v they_o shall_v we_o trouble_v ourselves_o about_o it_o for_o if_o we_o believe_v the_o servant_n of_o god_n shall_v have_v a_o eternity_n of_o happiness_n after_o the_o resurrection_n be_v not_o that_o sufficient_a for_o we_o whether_o our_o soul_n can_v be_v happy_a in_o their_o separation_n or_o not_o whether_o it_o be_v kindness_n or_o crossness_n religion_n or_o sin_n that_o move_v man_n to_o talk_v after_o this_o rate_n i_o shall_v not_o now_o inquire_v sure_o i_o be_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o search_v the_o scripture_n and_o bless_v be_v god_n for_o the_o liberty_n of_o do_v so_o and_o certain_o it_o be_v not_o below_o we_o to_o search_v they_o for_o this_o purpose_n if_o perhaps_o we_o may_v find_v satisfaction_n about_o it_o which_o that_o we_o may_v i_o trust_v will_v be_v acknowledge_v by_o the_o unprejudiced_a reader_n thing_n reveal_v do_v belong_v to_o we_o and_o that_o this_o be_v reveal_v may_v easy_o be_v perceive_v by_o what_o have_v be_v insist_v on_o about_o it_o and_o he_o that_o grant_v it_o a_o truth_n will_v never_o deny_v it_o to_o be_v a_o comfortable_a one_o whatsoever_o also_o christian_n may_v undervalue_v methinks_v they_o shall_v not_o despise_v the_o consolation_n of_o the_o scripture_n which_o will_v hold_v when_o other_o comfort_n fail_v and_o though_o it_o be_v not_o very_o delightful_a to_o deal_v with_o the_o oppose_v this_o truth_n by_o it_o be_v especial_o that_o of_o the_o psalmist_n ps_n 6.5_o in_o death_n there_o be_v no_o remembrance_n of_o thou_o and_o in_o the_o grave_a who_o shall_v give_v thou_o thanks_o but_o must_v not_o they_o be_v very_o quick-sighted_a that_o can_v find_v in_o the_o place_n of_o darkness_n a_o argument_n against_o this_o encourage_n doctrine_n but_o how_o little_a this_o be_v not_o a_o person_n but_o only_o a_o constitutive_a part_n of_o the_o person_n with_o no_o less_o vanity_n be_v psal_n 146.4_o object_v against_o this_o point_n his_o breath_n go_v forth_o he_o return_v to_o his_o earth_n and_o in_o that_o very_a day_n his_o thought_n perish_v for_o man_n be_v thought_n in_o that_o scripture_n need_v be_v extend_v no_o far_o than_o his_o earthly_a thought_n so_o much_o of_o life_n as_o a_o think_a faculty_n contain_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n also_o there_o be_v some_o text_n urge_v by_o these_o man_n but_o chief_o that_o of_o st._n paul_n 2_o tim._n confute_v it_o that_o in_o my_o opinion_n they_o do_v not_o so_o much_o as_o seem_v to_o concern_v it_o sect_n vii_o the_o point_n improve_v for_o confutation_n of_o error_n among_o the_o many_o good_a purpose_n for_o which_o the_o truth_n in_o hand_n may_v be_v serviceable_a it_o may_v fit_o be_v consider_v for_o the_o disprove_v some_o principle_n that_o some_o people_n have_v too_o glad_o entertain_v 1._o that_o of_o the_o libertine_n that_o the_o soul_n at_o death_n lose_v its_o very_a be_v and_o vanish_v into_o air_n or_o what_o they_o please_v or_o that_o it_o then_o have_v a_o drowsy_a state_n if_o any_o and_o sleep_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o grave_a or_o other_o place_n doctrine_n exact_o calculate_v for_o the_o meridian_n of_o profaneness_n and_o may_v indifferent_o serve_v for_o all_o bad_a practice_n they_o be_v indeed_o of_o such_o a_o dismal_a aspect_n and_o malign_v influence_n that_o i_o can_v hardly_o compare_v they_o to_o any_o more_o fit_o than_o those_o that_o come_v out_o of_o the_o mouth_n of_o the_o leviathan_n for_o they_o look_v as_o ugly_a though_o not_o just_a like_o they_o and_o as_o one_o day_n their_o folly_n shall_v be_v manifest_v to_o all_o man_n so_o the_o present_a truth_n do_v full_o discover_v it_o for_o if_o the_o soul_n in_o its_o separate_a state_n be_v capable_a of_o joy_n and_o happiness_n as_o be_v prove_v certain_o than_o it_o lose_v not_o its_o be_v nor_o its_o apprehension_n and_o well_o may_v he_o be_v deem_v a_o senseless_a man_n here_o that_o think_v his_o soul_n shall_v be_v so_o insensible_a hereafter_o and_o as_o plain_o do_v it_o oppose_v the_o doctrine_n of_o purgatory_n which_o though_o bellarmine_n and_o his_o brethren_n say_v have_v its_o difficulty_n as_o to_o those_o question_n about_o it_o viii_o for_o trial_n of_o ourselves_o whether_o we_o be_v of_o the_o number_n of_o those_o just_a one_o that_o may_v just_o expect_v this_o approach_a felicity_n since_o there_o be_v such_o a_o happy_a state_n for_o the_o just_a after_o death_n yea_o present_o after_o it_o so_o as_o that_o death_n itself_o become_v their_o advantage_n and_o lead_v their_o soul_n into_o the_o bless_a presence_n of_o their_o saviour_n since_o it_o be_v thus_o i_o say_v methinks_v it_o shall_v mighty_o move_v consider_v people_n to_o search_v and_o try_v their_o way_n and_o state_n and_o see_v whether_o they_o be_v in_o such_o a_o state_n as_o may_v warrant_v they_o to_o lay_v claim_n to_o this_o happiness_n at_o hand_n which_o the_o word_n of_o our_o god_n discover_v to_o we_o if_o it_o be_v report_v any_o thing_n credible_o that_o they_o who_o be_v so_o and_o so_o qualify_v shall_v have_v honour_n and_o preferment_n how_o easy_o will_v they_o be_v bring_v to_o consider_v whether_o they_o have_v the_o suppose_a qualification_n at_o least_o if_o they_o think_v themselves_o capable_a of_o they_o though_o at_o the_o same_o time_n they_o be_v not_o ignorant_a that_o death_n will_v short_o disgrace_v all_o worldly_a glory_n much_o more_o shall_v man_n try_v whether_o they_o can_v yet_o lay_v claim_n to_o that_o real_a happiness_n that_o shall_v come_v quick_o and_o last_v for_o ever_o now_o as_o to_o this_o they_o need_v no_o more_o to_o prove_v their_o interest_n in_o it_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o christ_n than_o to_o prove_v themselves_o to_o be_v true_o just_a or_o righteous_a person_n for_o it_o be_v the_o just_a that_o shall_v come_v out_o of_o trouble_n prov._n 12.13_o it_o be_v the_o upright_a one_o who_o end_n be_v peace_n ps_n 37.37_o it_o be_v the_o righteous_a that_o have_v hope_n in_o his_o death_n prov._n 14.32_o it_o be_v the_o same_o also_o that_o the_o prophet_n tell_v we_o shall_v enter_v into_o peace_n esa_n 57.2_o and_o we_o know_v by_o willing_a to_o resolve_v so_o far_o as_o the_o give_v my_o opinion_n of_o some_o query_n relate_v to_o the_o present_a point_n 1._o whether_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o just_a after_o death_n do_v go_v so_o immediate_o and_o direct_o to_o heaven_n or_o be_v so_o confine_v and_o limit_v as_o to_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v e_z at_o any_o time_n in_o this_o low_a world_n 2._o whether_o the_o rest_n and_o joy_n which_o they_o have_v after_o death_n be_v perfect_a or_o not_o concern_v these_o i_o desire_v the_o reader_n to_o be_v of_o my_o mind_n no_o far_o than_o he_o can_v see_v some_o reason_n for_o it_o as_o to_o the_o former_a the_o most_o common_a opinion_n i_o think_v be_v that_o such_o depart_a soul_n have_v no_o more_o to_o do_v with_o any_o on_o earth_n or_o have_v no_o presence_n with_o they_o nor_o appearance_n to_o they_o at_o any_o time_n or_o on_o any_o account_n but_o with_o i_o the_o say_n of_o it_o without_o the_o prove_v of_o it_o signify_v but_o little_a and_o i_o know_v no_o argument_n they_o be_v for_o it_o that_o my_o reason_n be_v satisfy_v in_o i_o therefore_o conceive_v the_o contrary_a to_o be_v true_a that_o holy_a soul_n after_o death_n may_v be_v at_o some_o time_n and_o on_o some_o occasion_n present_a with_o man_n in_o this_o world_n appear_v to_o they_o and_o converse_v with_o they_o though_o i_o believe_v it_o be_v not_o ordinary_a nor_o aught_o to_o be_v expect_v by_o any_o and_o since_o there_o be_v noâ—_n better_a way_n to_o prove_v a_o thing_n may_v be_v than_o to_o prove_v that_o it_o have_v be_v i_o shall_v therefore_o offer_v
