therefore_o the_o presumptuous_a sinner_n be_v oppose_v to_o the_o ignorant_a sinner_n numb_a 15._o not_o that_o every_o sin_v against_o knowledge_n absolute_o whatsoever_o be_v a_o presumptuous_a sin_v be_v against_o knowledge_n and_o without_o gross_a ignorance_n the_o presumptuous_a sinner_n hold_v a_o candle_n in_o one_o hand_n and_o draw_v out_o the_o sword_n with_o the_o other_o my_o meaning_n be_v this_o that_o he_o break_v through_o the_o light_n of_o knowledge_n discern_v the_o way_n to_o be_v sinful_a yea_o and_o flame_v upon_o his_o breast_n work_v in_o and_o check_v his_o conscience_n notwithstanding_o all_o which_o yet_o he_o will_v presume_v to_o offend_v and_o proceed_v in_o transgressing_n it_o be_v true_a even_o a_o good_a man_n in_o many_o particular_n object_n may_z and_o do_v sin_n not_o only_o against_o habitual_a but_o against_o actual_a knowledge_n but_o this_o be_v through_o infirmity_n not_o through_o sol._n contumacy_n he_o approve_v that_o light_n against_o the_o sin_n and_o do_v not_o maintain_v the_o sin_n against_o his_o light_n yea_o he_o yield_v not_o only_o by_o approbation_n of_o judgement_n but_o also_o by_o resolution_n and_o desire_n of_o will_n to_o imitate_v the_o light_n yet_o through_o the_o weakness_n of_o his_o power_n and_o from_o the_o force_n of_o a_o hasty_a temptation_n he_o may_v fall_v down_o even_o at_o noonday_n but_o the_o presumptuous_a sinner_n see_v light_a as_o a_o enemy_n and_o therefore_o willing_o break_v through_o it_o to_o the_o way_n of_o his_o sin_n yea_o he_o make_v his_o heart_n to_o uphold_v the_o sin_n against_o the_o force_n of_o his_o knowledge_n and_o drive_v back_o the_o argument_n with_o a_o resolution_n that_o however_o he_o will_v have_v his_o sin_n 3._o the_o presumptuous_a sinner_n in_o that_o kind_n of_o sin_v adventure_n threaten_n he_o adventure_n against_o express_a threaten_n against_o express_a threatening_n thus_o it_o stand_v with_o a_o man_n his_o heart_n and_o satan_n incline_v and_o egg_n he_o to_o sin_n but_o god_n and_o conscience_n stand_v in_o the_o way_n against_o he_o as_o he_o say_v of_o note_n the_o sword_n to_o joab_n know_v thou_o not_o that_o it_o will_v be_v bitterness_n in_o the_o end_n so_o god_n say_v to_o he_o thou_o shall_v not_o have_v peace_n in_o this_o way_n it_o be_v the_o thing_n which_o i_o hate_v and_o abhor_v and_o i_o have_v reveal_v wrath_n from_o heaven_n against_o it_o but_o in_o presumption_n the_o sin_v soul_n step_v over_o the_o threaten_n to_o the_o commit_n of_o the_o sin_n that_o sword_n of_o god_n which_o may_v keep_v back_o another_o man_n yet_o though_o god_n set_v the_o point_n of_o it_o to_o the_o breast_n of_o a_o presumptuous_a sinner_n it_o will_v not_o stave_v he_o off_o from_o adventure_v therefore_o the_o presumptuous_a sinner_n be_v say_v to_o bless_v himself_o in_o his_o heart_n though_o god_n threaten_v a_o curse_n deut._n 29._o this_o be_v a_o truth_n that_o a_o presumptuous_a sinner_n be_v not_o change_v by_o mercy_n nor_o affright_v by_o threat_n but_o as_o the_o leviathan_n in_o job_n laugh_v at_o the_o shake_n of_o the_o spear_n so_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o presumptuous_a sinner_n puff_v at_o all_o divine_a warning_n and_o menace_n come_v say_v they_o let_v it_o come_v that_o we_o may_v see_v he_o as_o there_o be_v not_o a_o love_n to_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n so_o there_o be_v not_o a_o fear_n of_o the_o greatness_n of_o god_n in_o presumption_n 4._o presumptuous_a sin_n do_v arise_v from_o a_o false_a confidence_n there_o be_v two_o mercy_n they_o arise_v from_o a_o false_a confidence_n of_o the_o facility_n of_o mercy_n thing_n upon_o which_o the_o presume_a sinner_n do_v embolden_v himself_o 1._o one_o be_v the_o facility_n of_o mercy_n when_o a_o man_n set_v mercy_n against_o sin_n he_o do_v well_o because_o god_n mercy_n shall_v draw_v our_o heart_n off_o from_o sin_n but_o when_o a_o man_n set_v mercy_n against_o justice_n now_o he_o offend_v yet_o thus_o do_v the_o presumptuous_a sinner_n perhaps_o there_o be_v not_o in_o every_o presumptuous_a sinner_n such_o a_o spirit_n of_o atheistical_a madness_n that_o he_o be_v absolute_o careless_a of_o all_o that_o god_n threaten_v nor_o be_v he_o so_o miserable_o prodigal_a of_o his_o soul_n that_o he_o rejoice_v to_o have_v it_o damn_v no_o he_o may_v and_o sometime_o do_v apprehend_v threaten_n yea_o so_o that_o his_o heart_n be_v cause_v to_o demur_v it_o may_v be_v a_o stop_a apprehension_n i_o such_o as_o may_v make_v he_o study_v how_o to_o pursue_v his_o sin_n and_o yet_o to_o wave_v and_o decline_v the_o edge_n of_o the_o sharp_a threaten_n and_o this_o he_o do_v by_o oppose_a mercy_n to_o justice_n it_o be_v true_a this_o be_v a_o sin_n and_o divine_a justice_n will_v not_o take_v it_o well_o but_o i_o will_v adventure_v on_o it_o hope_v that_o divine_a mercy_n will_v pacify_v the_o rigour_n of_o the_o threaten_a i_o will_v sin_v and_o offend_v justice_n but_o then_o i_o will_v decline_v that_o court_n by_o fly_v to_o the_o mercy-seat_n god_n be_v of_o a_o gentle_a heart_n easy_a to_o be_v entreat_v and_o will_v be_v present_o satisfy_v and_o appease_v just_o like_o a_o man_n who_o will_v break_v his_o bone_n because_o he_o trust_v to_o have_v they_o quick_o set_v by_o a_o skilful_a chirurgeon_n or_o like_o a_o lewd_a child_n who_o adventure_n to_o outrage_n upon_o the_o scope_n and_o allowance_n of_o his_o father_n good_a nature_n this_o ground_n of_o presumption_n god_n full_o intimate_v in_o deut._n 29._o 19_o when_o he_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o the_o curse_n that_o he_o bless_v himself_o in_o his_o heart_n say_v i_o shall_v have_v peace_n though_o i_o walk_v in_o the_o imagination_n of_o my_o heart_n to_o add_v drunkenness_n to_o thirst_n etc._n etc._n belove_a this_o be_v certain_a that_o presumption_n dispose_v of_o mercy_n beyond_o all_o allowance_n and_o write_v a_o pardon_n which_o god_n will_v never_o allow_v nor_o seal_v it_o will_v dare_v to_o run_v in_o debt_n upon_o a_o conceit_n of_o a_o discharge_n and_o clear_v however_o as_o if_o divine_a mercy_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o to_o sin_n and_o cheerful_a after_o the_o commission_n of_o it_o but_o very_o mercy_n be_v more_o precious_a than_o so_o 2._o another_o be_v the_o self_n possibility_n and_o strength_n of_o future_a repentance_n repentance_n of_o the_o self_n possibility_n of_o future_a repentance_n he_o be_v one_o of_o the_o worst_a patient_n in_o a_o way_n of_o sin_v who_o be_v confident_a that_o he_o can_v be_v his_o own_o physician_n no_o soul_n wound_v itself_o more_o than_o that_o which_o vain_o think_v that_o it_o can_v present_o cure_v they_o presumption_n be_v not_o always_o carry_v upon_o a_o absolute_a hope_n of_o mercy_n but_o the_o sinner_n be_v more_o piercing_o understand_a know_v that_o mercy_n be_v a_o special_a charter_n and_o such_o a_o balm_n as_o be_v spread_v only_o upon_o a_o return_v and_o humble_v soul_n here_o it_o be_v that_o this_o presumptuous_a person_n will_v adventure_v to_o sin_n upon_o a_o confidence_n that_o he_o will_v notwithstanding_o all_o this_o fashion_n and_o polish_v his_o soul_n to_o a_o meet_a capacity_n of_o mercy_n by_o hereafter_o repenting_n and_o humbling_n he_o do_v foolish_o delude_v his_o soul_n with_o a_o fancy_n of_o such_o thing_n which_o exceed_v his_o power_n there_o be_v two_o thing_n which_o the_o sinner_n can_v assure_v himself_o of_o one_o be_v the_o lengthen_v of_o his_o life_n for_o this_o candle_n be_v light_v and_o put_v out_o not_o according_a to_o our_o desire_n but_o according_a to_o divine_a pleasure_n all_o life_n have_v its_o limit_n from_o the_o lord_n of_o life_n and_o death_n he_o who_o sin_n to_o day_n can_v be_v assure_v that_o he_o shall_v live_v till_o to_o morrow_n now_o
repentance_n be_v a_o work_n of_o this_o life_n death_n bind_v we_o over_o to_o sentence_n and_o then_o it_o be_v too_o late_a to_o return_v and_o therefore_o every_o presumptuous_a sinner_n adventure_n bold_o upon_o that_o which_o can_v be_v his_o beyond_o the_o time_n present_a another_o be_v the_o return_v of_o the_o heart_n from_o sin_n though_o our_o natural_a principle_n can_v give_v the_o wound_n yet_o they_o must_v be_v supernatural_a principle_n which_o give_v the_o cure_n our_o own_o heart_n can_v cause_v we_o to_o fall_v but_o god_n grace_n only_o be_v that_o which_o raise_v we_o now_o god_n grace_n be_v god_n gift_n and_o not_o man_n stock_n though_o we_o alone_o can_v fall_v off_o from_o god_n by_o sin_n yet_o none_o but_o god_n can_v bring_v we_o back_o from_o sin_n by_o true_a repentance_n unto_o himself_o yet_o presumption_n make_v the_o heart_n bold_a not_o only_o with_o time_n which_o be_v in_o god_n hand_n but_o also_o with_o grace_n which_o be_v only_o in_o god_n gift_n though_o i_o sin_n yet_o i_o will_v hereafter_o repent_v thus_o the_o presumptuous_a soul_n who_o life_n may_v be_v instant_o cut_v off_o and_o to_o who_o god_n may_v vain_a thing_n to_o disregard_n it_o in_o his_o authority_n and_o majesty_n over_o our_o conscience_n and_o heart_n and_o way_n as_o if_o a_o soul_n shall_v say_v what_o care_v i_o though_o god_n do_v speak_v thus_o and_o thus_o i_o will_v not_o be_v curb_v and_o limit_v nor_o restrain_v this_o be_v to_o contemn_v god_n and_o it_o be_v call_v a_o rebel_n against_o he_o deut._n 1._o 24._o i_o word_n and_o act_n because_o he_o know_v they_o will_v displease_v god_n this_o be_v the_o very_a top_n and_o height_n of_o presumptuous_a sin_v when_o a_o man_n in_o a_o sober_a and_o calm_a spirit_n up_o the_o fire_n from_o burn_v the_o three_o child_n and_o the_o lion_n from_o devour_a daniel_n and_o abimelech_n from_o touch_v sarah_n and_o laban_n from_o hurt_v jacob_n the_o natural_a inclination_n of_o the_o former_a and_o the_o moral_o evil_a disposition_n of_o the_o latter_a be_v chain_v in_o they_o be_v stop_v they_o be_v hinder_v in_o respect_n of_o their_o act_n and_o exercise_n all_o creature_n be_v capable_a of_o restraint_n because_o under_o a_o supreme_a power_n only_a god_n can_v be_v restrain_v but_o for_o all_o creature_n their_o nature_n and_o inclination_n and_o operation_n be_v under_o his_o command_n by_o the_o law_n of_o creation_n 2._o restraint_n of_o any_o agent_n arise_v from_o a_o great_a strength_n agent_n restraint_n of_o any_o agent_n be_v from_o a_o great_a strength_n of_o a_o superior_a agent_n of_o a_o superior_a agent_n whatsoever_o keep_v a_o man_n back_o from_o a_o sinful_a act_n it_o be_v at_o that_o time_n while_o a_o restraint_n of_o more_o actual_o strong_a force_n than_o the_o present_a inclination_n be_v as_o in_o the_o stop_n of_o a_o stone_n or_o water_n that_o which_o be_v unequal_a in_o strength_n a_o lesser_a force_n be_v not_o able_a to_o keep_v in_o the_o strong_a the_o cord_n wherewith_o samson_n be_v bind_v be_v no_o restraint_n to_o his_o motion_n and_o escape_n for_o his_o strength_n exceed_v they_o and_o he_o easy_o break_v they_o asunder_o but_o god_n decree_n and_o providence_n be_v a_o restraint_n to_o the_o rage_a sea_n and_o his_o power_n be_v a_o restraint_n to_o gird_v
