man_n therefore_o it_o be_v a_o substance_n for_o it_o be_v absurd_a to_o say_v that_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n or_o man_n himself_o be_v make_v according_a unto_o or_o after_o the_o pattern_n of_o a_o accident_n 5._o this_o seed_n and_o that_o by_o which_o it_o be_v nourish_v god_n give_v from_o heaven_n as_o the_o scripture_n do_v plain_o declare_v therefore_o it_o be_v a_o substance_n for_o if_o it_o be_v a_o accident_n it_o can_v not_o come_v from_o heaven_n because_o the_o maxim_n be_v a_o accident_n can_v pass_v from_o one_o subject_n into_o another_o 6._o it_o be_v call_v oft_o in_o scripture_n the_o body_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o flesh_n blood_n which_o the_o soul_n feed_v upon_o it_o become_v clothe_v therewith_o as_o with_o a_o body_n and_o thereby_o dwell_v in_o christ_n call_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n a_o accident_n 7._o the_o saint_n feel_v it_o in_o they_o as_o real_o to_o be_v a_o part_n or_o particle_n of_o the_o very_a substance_n of_o heaven_n viz._n of_o that_o spiritual_a and_o invisile_a heaven_n where_o the_o saint_n live_v as_o they_o do_v feel_v the_o body_n of_o their_o outward_a man_n to_o be_v a_o part_n or_o particle_n of_o the_o sustance_n of_o this_o outward_a world_n 8._o it_o receive_v the_o name_n of_o all_o these_o thing_n which_o be_v substance_n but_o never_o the_o name_n of_o a_o accident_n in_o scripture_n therefore_o etc._n etc._n but_o some_o may_v say_v that_o by_o this_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o we_o judge_v the_o sâ—ed_z and_o divine_a birth_n as_o we_o call_v it_o not_o only_o a_o substance_n but_o that_o it_o be_v a_o compose_a substance_n of_o body_n and_o spirit_n to_o which_o i_o answer_v yea_o it_o be_v so_o for_o its_o body_n be_v the_o vehicle_n or_o vessel_n of_o its_o spirit_n for_o as_o every_o natural_a seed_n and_o birth_n have_v its_o body_n and_o pirit_n so_o have_v this_o spiritual_a seed_n and_o it_o be_v the_o body_n that_o be_v the_o vessel_n which_o contain_v or_o convey_v the_o spirit_n and_o so_o the_o seed_n of_o corn_n have_v its_o spirit_n or_o virtue_n in_o its_o body_n and_o so_o every_o other_o seed_n and_o herb_n and_o tree_n of_o the_o field_n as_o the_o appletree_n the_o vine-tree_n who_o fruit_n have_v both_o body_n and_o spirit_n as_o wine_n have_v its_o spirit_n and_o so_o any_o other_o liquor_n which_o evaporate_v or_o extract_v leave_v its_o body_n dead_a so_o this_o spiritual_a seed_n and_o vine_n have_v its_o body_n and_o spirit_n contain_v in_o it_o manifold_a most_o noble_a and_o excellent_a power_n and_o virtue_n which_o spirit_n be_v a_o measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o soul_n of_o christ_n the_o heavenly_a man._n and_o thus_o have_v get_v through_o this_o particular_a i_o pass_v unto_o another_o which_o be_v to_o show_v that_o regeneration_n be_v not_o simple_o the_o infusion_n of_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n into_o the_o soul_n for_o indeed_o as_o it_o be_v in_o natural_a seed_n and_o birth_n so_o be_v it_o here_o in_o the_o spiritual_a now_o in_o natural_n the_o seed_n be_v not_o the_o birth_n nor_o be_v a_o thing_n say_v to_o be_v generate_v when_o its_o seed_n be_v sow_v the_o seed_n of_o a_o appletree_n be_v not_o â—he_v tree_n itself_o but_o a_o principle_n out_o of_o which_o the_o tree_n with_o its_o spirit_n life_n and_o power_n do_v spring_v and_o the_o seed_n of_o a_o man_n be_v not_o a_o man_n yea_o the_o seed_n may_v be_v cast_v into_o the_o womb_n and_o by_o some_o impediment_n no_o conception_n follow_v and_o in_o the_o very_a conceive_n may_v be_v mar_v and_o indeed_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n be_v plain_a how_o that_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o kingdom_n after_o it_o be_v sow_v spring_v up_o like_o the_o corn_n which_o may_v be_v choke_v by_o impediment_n but_o where_o it_o be_v not_o choke_v it_o spring_v up_o first_o to_o the_o blade_n than_o the_o ear_n then_o to_o the_o full_a corn_n and_o that_o be_v its_o generation_n now_o â—hen_o a_o thing_n be_v but_o in_o the_o seeâ—_n the_o life_n spirit_n and_o power_n or_o virtue_n of_o its_o nature_n be_v hide_v and_o as_o it_o be_v bury_v within_o the_o body_n of_o the_o seed_n which_o because_o the_o seed_n have_v not_o a_o body_n so_o large_a nor_o so_o organise_v as_o they_o require_v therefore_o they_o do_v not_o appear_v till_o it_o have_v receive_v in_o some_o measure_n a_o large_a and_o organise_v body_n and_o the_o more_o the_o body_n grow_v up_o and_o become_v organise_v its_o spirit_n life_n and_o power_n do_v manifest_v themselves_o more_o and_o more_o which_o in_o the_o seed_n lie_v as_o it_o be_v dead_a and_o bury_v and_o altogether_o unable_a to_o perform_v their_o operation_n as_o be_v confine_v as_o in_o fetter_n in_o so_o narrow_a a_o room_n yea_o further_o their_o be_v be_v so_o
but_o the_o more_o abundant_a fruit_n it_o bring_v forth_o this_o month_n or_o year_n the_o yet_o more_o abundant_o it_o bring_v forth_o the_o next_o yea_o its_o life_n be_v so_o much_o in_o work_v and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n that_o if_o it_o be_v hinder_v in_o its_o moving_n and_o work_n it_o die_v even_o as_o the_o fire_n go_v out_o if_o it_o be_v stop_v from_o burn_a and_o the_o water_n die_v if_o it_o be_v keep_v from_o run_v beside_o the_o lord_n be_v so_o well_o please_v in_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v diligent_a in_o good_a work_n through_o his_o own_o holy_a life_n and_o spirit_n that_o he_o do_v reward_v it_o with_o a_o further_a measure_n and_o take_v delight_n to_o water_v the_o soul_n that_o be_v fruitful_a therein_o the_o more_o abundant_o with_o his_o heavenly_a virtue_n and_o spirit_n even_o as_o the_o husbandman_n do_v his_o garden_n which_o yield_v he_o good_a fruit_n but_o the_o vine-yard_n which_o bring_v not_o forth_o good_a grape_n but_o the_o sour_a and_o bitter_a grape_n of_o evil_a work_n see_v what_o he_o do_v to_o it_o isa._n 5._o i_o will_v lay_v it_o waste_v say_v the_o lord_n it_o shall_v not_o be_v prune_v nor_o dig_v etc._n etc._n i_o will_v also_o command_v the_o cloud_n that_o they_o rain_v no_o rain_n upon_o it_o but_o it_o may_v be_v say_v be_v not_o faith_n a_o work_n and_o be_v not_o believe_v work_v and_o yet_o thou_o grant_v that_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o attain_v unto_o the_o first_o beginning_n or_o beginning_n of_o a_o holy_a and_o spiritual_a life_n through_o faith_n and_o believe_v unto_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a property_n of_o faith_n 1._o receptive_a or_o receive_v 2._o operative_a or_o work_v now_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o attain_v unto_o the_o begin_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n through_o the_o property_n of_o faith_n which_o be_v opperative_a but_o through_o that_o which_o be_v receptive_a and_o lest_o any_o shall_v think_v this_o distinction_n too_o nice_a or_o subtle_a i_o shall_v prove_v it_o from_o the_o express_a word_n of_o scripture_n 1._o that_o faith_n be_v operative_a be_v clear_a from_o that_o scripture_n where_o it_o be_v say_v faith_n work_v by_o love_n and_o where_o it_o be_v say_v to_o purify_v the_o heart_n and_o do_v a_o great_a many_o good_a thing_n in_o many_o other_o place_n 2._o that_o it_o be_v receptive_a i_o shall_v go_v no_o further_o then_o joh._n 1.12_o for_o proof_n to_o as_o many_o as_o receive_v he_o to_o they_o give_v he_o power_n to_o become_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o that_o this_o receive_v christ_n be_v a_o believe_v in_o he_o be_v plain_a from_o the_o word_n immediate_o follow_v even_o say_v he_o to_o they_o that_o believe_v in_o his_o name_n so_o here_o be_v the_o receptive_a faith_n for_o receptive_a be_v as_o much_o as_o to_o say_v in_o english_a receive_v nor_o be_v there_o many_o example_n want_v in_o natural_a thing_n to_o show_v that_o a_o thing_n may_v have_v the_o receptive_a power_n when_o as_o yet_o it_o have_v not_o the_o operative_a yea_o that_o the_o receptive_a make_v way_n for_o the_o operative_a as_o to_o instance_n in_o some_o 1._o the_o needle_n of_o the_o compass_n must_v first_o receive_v its_o virtue_n from_o the_o load_n stone_n be_v touch_v with_o it_o before_o it_o can_v direct_v itself_o towards_o the_o pole_n 2._o the_o branch_n that_o be_v cutoff_a from_o its_o own_o natural_a stock_n and_o graft_v into_o another_o it_o first_o receive_v life_n and_o virtue_n from_o the_o stock_n into_o which_o it_o be_v graft_v and_o drink_v it_o in_o before_o it_o proceed_v to_o send_v forth_o either_o leaf_n or_o flourish_n or_o fruit_n 3._o the_o womb_n first_o receive_v seed_n before_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n in_o it_o proceed_v in_o their_o operation_n for_o its_o conception_n and_o formation_n 4._o the_o stomach_n first_o receive_v the_o meat_n into_o it_o before_o by_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n therein_o it_o digest_v and_o turn_v it_o into_o the_o nourishment_n of_o the_o body_n and_o indeed_o this_o last_o example_n do_v with_o great_a clearness_n hold_v forth_o the_o thing_n in_o hand_n for_o suppose_v now_o a_o man_n through_o hunger_n be_v even_o faint_a and_o as_o it_o be_v dead_a so_o that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v nothing_o yet_o receive_v a_o little_a food_n the_o virtue_n of_o it_o do_v sudden_o revive_v he_o and_o give_v he_o natural_a strength_n whereby_o he_o may_v do_v and_o work_v as_o former_o and_o thus_o the_o soul_n receive_v and_o drink_v in_o that_o divine_a virtue_n of_o life_n that_o be_v in_o the_o divine_a seed_n be_v thereby_o quicken_v and_o strengthen_v to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o pertain_v unto_o a_o holy_a life_n in_o some_o measure_n all_o which_o example_n and_o many_o more_o which_o can_v be_v adduce_v prove_v that_o a_o thing_n may_v have_v a_o receptive_a power_n and_o not_o the_o operative_a yea_o that_o the_o receptive_a make_v way_n for_o the_o operative_a and_o to_o this_o purpose_n these_o word_n of_o christ_n be_v observable_a he_o that_o believe_v in_o i_o say_v he_o though_o he_o be_v dead_a yet_o shall_v he_o live_v which_o import_v that_o a_o soul_n though_o it_o be_v dead_a may_v believe_v that_o be_v to_o say_v receive_v the_o seed_n and_o principle_n of_o life_n into_o it_o for_o this_o divine_a principle_n be_v of_o a_o insinuate_a and_o penetrate_a nature_n it_o do_v make_v way_n for_o its_o own_o reception_n in_o the_o heart_n insinuate_a and_o as_o it_o be_v wind_v itself_o thereinto_o as_o the_o fire_n do_v into_o wood_n or_o any_o combustible_a matter_n but_o now_o when_o this_o principle_n do_v labour_n to_o work_v itself_o into_o the_o soul_n and_o its_o power_n the_o soul_n may_v resist_v and_o do_v so_o many_o time_n whereby_o it_o remain_v dead_a though_o otherwise_o it_o may_v have_v live_v by_o give_v way_n unto_o or_o receive_v this_o divine_a principle_n and_o seed_n and_o thus_o that_o subtle_a objection_n may_v be_v answer_v which_o be_v thus_o believe_v or_o faith_n be_v a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a life_n indwell_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o can_v only_o proceed_v from_o the_o soul_n that_o live_v a_o spiritual_a life_n for_o as_o a_o dead_a body_n can_v walk_v or_o move_v so_o nor_o can_v a_o dead_a soul_n believe_v from_o this_o it_o be_v infer_v that_o the_o soul_n must_v first_o live_v before_o it_o can_v believe_v or_o have_v faith_n and_o consequent_o that_o none_o other_o can_v have_v faith_n but_o they_o who_o be_v already_o partaker_n of_o a_o spiritual_a life_n which_o be_v contrary_a to_o what_o you_o say_v that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o believe_v while_o yet_o you_o grant_v all_o man_n be_v not_o spiritual_o alive_a but_o this_o be_v answer_v by_o the_o former_a distinction_n of_o the_o twofold_a property_n of_o faith_n therefore_o unto_o that_o proposition_n on_o which_o the_o whole_a strength_n of_o the_o objection_n lie_v viz._n that_o faith_n be_v a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a life_n indwell_v in_o the_o soul_n i_o thus_o answer_v that_o the_o operative_a faith_n or_o believe_v be_v a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a life_n indwell_v i_o grant_v but_o as_o for_o the_o receptive_a property_n of_o faith_n through_o it_o the_o soul_n be_v make_v a_o partaker_n of_o the_o spiritual_a life_n by_o which_o it_o come_v to_o indwell_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o therefore_o the_o soul_n can_v be_v conceive_v to_o live_v spiritual_o before_o the_o receptive_a faith_n this_o receptive_a faith_n be_v the_o same_o with_o the_o soul_n be_v convert_v or_o turn_v or_o be_v convert_v or_o turn_v inward_o by_o the_o lord_n unto_o the_o divine_a seed_n and_o principle_n in_o it_o and_o to_o the_o divine_a presence_n of_o god_n and_o christ_n jesus_n therein_o whereof_o i_o have_v say_v somewhat_o chap._n 4._o and_o whether_o the_o soul_n be_v suppose_v only_o to_o be_v passive_a in_o this_o receptive_a faith_n or_o partly_o passive_a and_o partly_o active_a the_o matter_n be_v not_o much_o provide_v it_o be_v acknowledge_v that_o it_o can_v so_o much_o as_o believe_v even_o according_a to_o the_o receptive_a faith_n but_o as_o it_o be_v enable_v and_o assist_v after_o a_o supernatural_a manner_n by_o the_o lord_n also_o some_o may_v object_v this_o doctrine_n seem_v contrary_a to_o what_o you_o seem_v to_o hold_v when_o you_o say_v that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o god_n require_v of_o they_o and_o that_o no_o man_n perish_v for_o want_v of_o power_n to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n answ._n there_o be_v no_o contrariety_n herein_o for_o when_o we_o say_v it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o god_n require_v of_o they_o we_o understand_v not_o this_o simple_o and_o absolute_o
perfect_o cure_v and_o restore_v the_o sick_a and_o disease_a body_n of_o nature_n either_o in_o man_n or_o other_o thing_n but_o his_o incorruptible_a body_n through_o the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o dwell_v in_o it_o who_o say_v behold_v i_o make_v all_o thing_n new_a and_o for_o who_o come_v to_o renew_v they_o all_o the_o creation_n be_v invite_v to_o rejoice_v because_o of_o their_o be_v to_o be_v deliver_v through_o the_o same_o from_o their_o bondage_n and_o vanity_n yet_o i_o shall_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o it_o may_v be_v possible_a for_o man_n through_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n to_o find_v out_o such_o a_o substance_n as_o may_v do_v great_a cure_n on_o the_o body_n of_o nature_n but_o i_o say_v it_o can_v never_o perfect_o cure_v it_o otherwise_o the_o body_n shall_v become_v immortal_a which_o never_o shall_v be_v through_o the_o virtue_n of_o any_o other_o body_n but_o that_o of_o jesus_n christ_n as_o be_v say_v and_o though_o such_o a_o substance_n have_v be_v find_v or_o may_v be_v as_o suppose_v it_o which_o can_v turn_v the_o other_o metal_n into_o gold_n yet_o this_o be_v not_o the_o universal_a balâ—om_n or_o stone_n for_o even_o the_o pure_a gold_n on_o earth_n have_v its_o corruption_n and_o distemper_n from_o which_o when_o it_o be_v refine_v it_o will_v more_o excel_v what_o it_o be_v now_o than_o it_o at_o present_a do_v excel_v the_o base_a metal_n stone_n or_o sand_n or_o turf_n and_o to_o the_o end_n that_o this_o excellent_a body_n or_o birth_n of_o jesus_n christ_n may_v be_v the_o more_o prepare_v forsuch_o a_o effect_n viz._n to_o cure_v and_o restore_v all_o thing_n therefore_o it_o please_v the_o father_n to_o give_v he_o up_o both_o in_o soul_n and_o body_n to_o suffer_v such_o deep_a inward_a affliction_n suffering_n and_o trial_n for_o by_o these_o that_o hide_a divine_a virtue_n and_o perfection_n which_o be_v in_o the_o centre_n both_o of_o his_o soul_n and_o body_n be_v raise_v up_o and_o bring_v forth_o as_o into_o the_o circumference_n even_o unto_o its_o fullness_n and_o perfection_n according_a to_o which_o it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o scripture_n that_o he_o the_o captain_n of_o our_o salvation_n be_v make_v perfect_a through_o suffering_n for_o so_o it_o be_v indeed_o as_o to_o all_o other_o thing_n which_o have_v any_o perfection_n or_o virtue_n further_o in_o they_o than_o be_v manifest_a as_o it_o be_v hide_v in_o the_o centre_n which_o perfection_n be_v raise_v up_o and_o bring_v into_o view_n or_o manifestation_n through_o its_o suffering_n as_o by_o mortification_n calcination_n melt_v it_o in_o the_o fire_n heat_n it_o pound_v and_o press_v it_o bruise_v and_o squeeze_v boil_a and_o many_o such_o kind_n of_o thing_n well_o know_v to_o chemist_n and_o physician_n and_o thus_o be_v our_o bless_a lord_n use_v both_o in_o his_o soul_n and_o body_n his_o deep_a sufring_n in_o both_o be_v like_o a_o wine-press_n which_o serve_v to_o squeeze_v and_o press_v out_o the_o hide_a wine_n that_o be_v in_o his_o grape_n even_o that_o pure_a and_o precious_a water_n and_o blood_n which_o come_v out_o at_o his_o side_n on_o the_o cross_n and_o when_o in_o the_o garden_n he_o sweat_v that_o drop_n of_o blood_n fall_v to_o the_o ground_n these_o very_a drop_n of_o water_n and_o blood_n have_v a_o most_o excellent_a virtue_n in_o they_o beyond_o what_o man_n heart_n be_v able_a to_o conceive_v of_o whereby_o they_o enter_v into_o the_o very_a kernel_n and_o quintessence_n of_o the_o whole_a creation_n to_o its_o very_a heart_n for_o its_o deliverance_n and_o restauration_n and_o this_o be_v as_o a_o seed_n that_o be_v then_o sow_v in_o the_o very_a heart_n of_o the_o outward_a nature_n by_o which_o it_o be_v bless_v of_o god_n in_o some_o measure_n and_o through_o which_o it_o shall_v in_o due_a time_n be_v perfect_o deliver_v and_o cure_v of_o its_o vanity_n corruption_n and_o bondage_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o at_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n the_o whole_a outward_a creation_n fall_v into_o a_o wonderful_a passion_n and_o suffering_n in_o so_o much_o that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a darkness_n over_o all_o and_o the_o very_a earth_n be_v as_o it_o be_v rent_n for_o that_o secret_a and_o excellent_a virtue_n which_o go_v forth_o from_o he_o at_o his_o suffering_n even_o in_o the_o water_n and_o the_o blood_n pierce_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o body_n of_o the_o world_n and_o wrought_v in_o it_o like_o physic_n that_o work_v strong_o against_o the_o corrupt_a humour_n in_o man_n body_n that_o do_v great_o affect_v the_o body_n with_o suffering_n and_o thus_o it_o be_v even_o fit_a that_o the_o creation_n shall_v after_o its_o manner_n suffer_v with_o he_o which_o be_v to_o partake_v of_o such_o glorious_a effect_n through_o his_o suffering_n and_o though_o the_o outward_a creation_n be_v not_o yet_o cure_v through_o the_o secret_a virtue_n of_o that_o water_n and_o blood_n no_o nor_o yet_o the_o body_n of_o the_o saint_n yet_o in_o due_a time_n they_o shall_v even_o through_o and_o by_o the_o virtue_n of_o these_o suffering_n but_o as_o i_o have_v say_v above_o so_o do_v i_o again_o repeat_v it_o that_o it_o may_v have_v the_o more_o weight_n viz._n that_o we_o be_v not_o too_o nice_o to_o make_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o influence_n and_o effect_n of_o his_o outward_a and_o inward_a suffering_n but_o to_o understand_v they_o in_o a_o perfect_a conjunction_n and_o that_o the_o end_n of_o his_o suffer_v in_o both_o be_v this_o viz._n 1._o both_o to_o quench_v and_o allay_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n which_o be_v kindle_v both_o in_o man_n soul_n and_o body_n and_o also_o in_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o the_o creation_n and_o 2._o to_o purify_v and_o cure_v both_o man_n and_o also_o the_o outward_a creation_n from_o corruption_n vanity_n and_o bondage_n and_o so_o in_o relation_n to_o man_n this_o i_o say_v that_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o obedience_n life_n and_o righteousness_n both_o inward_o and_o outward_o have_v a_o very_a bless_a influence_n upon_o man_n both_o to_o remove_v the_o wrath_n and_o also_o to_o remove_v sin_n the_o cause_n of_o it_o and_o to_o bring_v in_o everlasting_a righteousness_n to_o cover_v the_o soul_n with_o by_o a_o real_a participation_n of_o it_o over_z and_o beyond_o all_o imaginary_a reckon_n and_o imputation_n of_o man_n though_o the_o imputation_n of_o god_n unto_o man_n â—we_v own_o and_o this_o i_o say_v further_o that_o the_o wrath_n be_v no_o further_o remove_v from_o man_n and_o ass_n can_v move_v upon_o four_o and_o run_v with_o a_o good_a pace_n yet_o they_o can_v fly_v as_o the_o fowl_n of_o the_o air_n neither_o can_v the_o fish_n move_v upon_o dry_a land_n and_o we_o will_v judge_v it_o a_o most_o unnatural_a and_o ridiculous_a thing_n to_o observe_v a_o horse_n essay_v to_o mount_v up_o into_o the_o air_n and_o fly_v like_o a_o fowl_n or_o a_o fish_n to_o move_v on_o dry_a land_n the_o reason_n of_o all_o which_o be_v because_o these_o motion_n be_v of_o different_a kind_n and_o proceed_v from_o different_a power_n of_o the_o sensual_a life_n and_o require_v different_a organ_n for_o their_o perform_n as_o the_o fowl_n its_o wing_n the_o fish_n its_o fin_n or_o scale_n etc._n etc._n beast_n their_o four_o foot_n or_o leg_n furthermore_o a_o beast_n can_v perform_v the_o natural_a operation_n of_o man_n even_o as_o a_o natural_a man_n such_o as_o to_o build_v plant_v write_v speak_v discourse_n for_o these_o be_v the_o operation_n proceed_v from_o the_o reasonable_a power_n which_o beast_n want_v now_o as_o to_o the_o other_o part_n to_o clear_v it_o also_o by_o example_n suppose_v i_o have_v the_o locomotive_a power_n and_o organ_n yet_o if_o there_o be_v such_o strong_a impediment_n as_o do_v universal_o hinder_v either_o the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o i_o can_v move_v as_o if_o the_o body_n be_v in_o some_o lethargy_n or_o swarf_n or_o universal_a gout_n which_o stop_v the_o power_n of_o motion_n or_o if_o the_o power_n be_v free_a yet_o if_o some_o external_a impediment_n be_v on_o the_o organ_n as_o the_o hand_n the_o life_n of_o holiness_n be_v but_o a_o natural_a man_n and_o not_o a_o saint_n therefore_o it_o be_v as_o impossible_a for_o he_o to_o do_v the_o work_n of_o a_o saint_n as_o it_o be_v for_o a_o flight_n of_o a_o live_a dove_n which_o come_v from_o a_o principle_n of_o life_n in_o she_o and_o the_o flight_n of_o that_o mechanical_a dove_n of_o architas_n which_o he_o be_v report_v to_o have_v make_v fly_v from_o some_o inward_a mechanic_n spring_v and_o device_n very_o artificial_o compose_v the_o motion_n of_o the_o one_o be_v living_n and_o natural_a and_o that_o of_o the_o other_o dead_a and_o artificial_a so_o it_o be_v as_o to_o the_o motion_n and_o work_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o those_o who_o be_v not_o saint_n the_o saint_n work_n and_o motion_n be_v live_v and_o do_v savour_n of_o that_o holy_a and_o precious_a life_n which_o produce_v they_o but_o the_o motion_n and_o work_n of_o the_o unholy_a and_o unrenewed_a be_v dead_a have_v no_o savour_n nor_o virtue_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n in_o they_o every_o man_n act_v according_a to_o that_o principle_n and_o power_n of_o life_n with_o which_o he_o be_v endue_v â—o_o the_o holy_a man_n act_v from_o the_o power_n and_o life_n of_o holiness_n which_o endue_v and_o clothe_v he_o and_o put_v a_o seal_n or_o impression_n of_o itself_o upon_o every_o work_n more_o or_o less_o which_o proceed_v therefrom_o convert_v to_o this_o evil_a principle_n through_o its_o work_n thereby_o and_o therefrom_o can_v so_o convert_v itself_o or_o persist_v in_o its_o conversion_n till_o it_o come_v to_o passiveness_n or_o forbearance_n so_o from_o all_o this_o iâ—_n be_v manifest_a that_o the_o soul_n ought_v to_o be_v passive_a and_o forbear_v its_o work_n and_o operative_a exercise_n until_o at_o least_o through_o its_o conversion_n unto_o the_o divine_a presence_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n and_o iâ—s_a continuance_n therein_o for_o some_o time_n it_o come_v to_o be_v endue_v and_o clothe_v with_o the_o power_n and_o life_n of_o holiness_n in_o some_o measure_n which_o it_o drink_v in_o from_o these_o divine_a touch_n of_o god_n and_o christ_n present_v in_o it_o in_o the_o divine_a sâ—â—d_n as_o it_o abide_v in_o its_o conversion_n thereunto_o even_o as_o the_o needle_n by_o its_o be_v touch_v by_o the_o loadstone_n and_o be_v for_o some_o time_n apply_v thereunto_o drink_v in_o a_o magnetic_a power_n and_o virtue_n whereby_o it_o move_v towards_o the_o north_n and_o though_o by_o some_o violence_n it_o shall_v be_v move_v out_o of_o its_o line_n it_o return_v to_o it_o again_o it_o to_o move_v true_o in_o any_o holy_a action_n though_o we_o can_v suppose_v it_o otherwise_o to_o have_v both_o the_o power_n and_o organ_n requisite_a thereunto_o there_o be_v a_o body_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n with_o many_o member_n which_o hang_v upon_o it_o and_o cover_v it_o all_o over_o and_o lie_v so_o heavy_a upon_o it_o even_o as_o so_o many_o talent_n of_o lead_n that_o it_o move_v swift_o and_o vigorous_o in_o unholy_a action_n
spirit_n now_o raise_v and_o form_v in_o thou_o for_o this_o be_v he_o who_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v thou_o for_o a_o leader_n and_o a_o commander_n and_o he_o be_v worthy_a to_o have_v this_o place_n for_o that_o he_o be_v a_o infallible_a guide_n instructor_n counsellor_n and_o teacher_n which_o never_o sin_v nor_o can_v sin_v and_o he_o have_v the_o father_n give_v unto_o thou_o for_o a_o head_n that_o in_o all_o thing_n thou_o shall_v obey_v he_o and_o do_v nothing_o but_o in_o his_o will_n even_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o natural_a body_n and_o life_n and_o power_n thereof_o for_o the_o power_n of_o life_n which_o be_v in_o the_o head_n and_o heart_n be_v supreme_a over_o the_o power_n which_o be_v in_o the_o other_o member_n do_v rule_n and_o command_v they_o and_o the_o there_o be_v confusion_n and_o disorder_n in_o nature_n as_o indeed_o it_o have_v fall_v out_o through_o man_n disobedience_n to_o this_o holy_a life_n because_o man_n supreamist_n power_n of_o life_n videlicet_fw-la his_o will_n have_v not_o stand_v in_o subjection_n to_o the_o power_n of_o this_o holy_a life_n which_o be_v its_o supreme_a therefore_o have_v its_o power_n be_v take_v from_o it_o in_o great_a part_n that_o it_o can_v rule_v its_o inferior_a power_n as_o of_o the_o natural_a passion_n and_o affection_n but_o they_o often_o rebel_v against_o it_o so_o that_o many_o time_n a_o the_o warrant_v aforesaid_a of_o the_o holy_a life_n mandatory_a or_o permissory_a â—o_o thou_o be_v to_o be_v as_o careful_a that_o thou_o be_v not_o backward_o negligent_a or_o unwilling_a to_o answer_v the_o will_n of_o this_o holy_a life_n in_o do_v those_o thing_n which_o it_o move_v and_o incline_v thou_o unto_o and_o require_v of_o thou_o for_o the_o hurt_n be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o in_o both_o viz._n in_o go_v about_o to_o do_v a_o thing_n or_o thing_n contrary_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o forbear_v to_o do_v that_o or_o those_o thing_n which_o he_o require_v of_o thou_o the_o one_o be_v the_o sin_n of_o commission_n the_o other_o be_v the_o sin_n of_o emission_n both_o of_o they_o the_o sin_n of_o disobedience_n against_o god_n and_o so_o both_o of_o they_o provoke_v the_o lord_n burden_n and_o grieve_v his_o holy_a life_n and_o spirit_n and_o both_o of_o they_o bring_v weakness_n conâ—usion_n deadness_n and_o darkness_n upon_o the_o soul_n iv._o do_v nothing_o soul_n as_o we_o have_v often_o find_v by_o great_a and_o good_a experience_n 1._o it_o be_v of_o great_a comfort_n for_o it_o signify_v the_o great_a lenity_n and_o moderation_n of_o the_o lord_n towards_o we_o that_o if_o we_o be_v single_o give_v up_o in_o our_o mind_n have_v a_o willingness_n of_o heart_n in_o simplicity_n and_o uprightness_n to_o know_v the_o will_n of_o god_n perfect_o in_o all_o thing_n if_o some_o thing_n even_o of_o great_a importance_n be_v unclear_a unto_o we_o he_o spare_v to_o charge_v the_o guiltiness_n of_o disobedience_n upon_o we_o till_o we_o be_v clear_a though_o we_o be_v â—ound_v in_o the_o forbearance_n of_o they_o which_o be_v great_a gentleness_n upon_o the_o lord_n part_n 2._o again_o it_o be_v of_o great_a advantage_n to_o we_o for_o first_o it_o rid_v we_o of_o many_o superstitious_a fear_n which_o other_o have_v whilst_o one_o while_o they_o suppose_v they_o shall_v do_v this_o other_o while_o the_o contrary_a and_o still_o imagine_v god_n to_o be_v angry_a with_o they_o one_o way_n or_o other_o which_o beget_v most_o woeful_a superstitious_a fear_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o indeed_o i_o may_v say_v the_o ground_n of_o all_o superstition_n be_v the_o unclearness_n and_o confusion_n of_o mind_n as_o to_o the_o understanding_n the_o will_n of_o god_n one_o while_o over-rating_a thing_n and_o judge_v itself_o bind_v in_o thing_n wherein_o the_o lord_n have_v leave_v it_o free_a and_o then_o again_o imagine_v but_o both_o doubtful_o to_o please_v the_o lord_n in_o thing_n he_o do_v not_o regard_n second_o it_o reduce_v our_o whole_a work_n as_o it_o be_v within_o a_o narrow_a or_o small_a compass_n and_o yet_o not_o narrow_a than_o the_o lord_n allow_v for_o according_a to_o this_o advertisement_n concern_v the_o many_o thing_n that_o come_v before_o we_o as_o duty_n by_o way_n of_o consideration_n if_o we_o stand_v in_o a_o true_a and_o single_a resignation_n unto_o the_o will_n of_o god_n in_o all_o thing_n or_o true_o aim_v thereat_o we_o may_v thus_o reason_n with_o our_o own_o heart_n either_o such_o a_o thing_n be_v make_v clear_a unto_o i_o from_o the_o lord_n by_o the_o manifestation_n of_o thing_n yea_o divers_a work_n both_o inward_a and_o outward_a pertain_v to_o a_o holy_a life_n as_o be_v come_v in_o measure_n to_o be_v a_o partaker_n thereof_o yet_o thou_o be_v in_o this_o time_n of_o thy_o weakness_n and_o childhood_n in_o the_o spiritual_a life_n more_o to_o be_v passive_a than_o active_a except_o as_o to_o the_o simple_a act_n of_o conversion_n wherein_o thou_o be_v constant_o so_o much_o as_o possible_a to_o be_v find_v for_o thereby_o thou_o will_v be_v still_o drink_v in_o from_o the_o live_a fountain_n the_o water_n of_o life_n by_o which_o thou_o will_v live_v and_o increase_v more_o and_o more_o in_o the_o holy_a life_n so_o as_o to_o grow_v up_o from_o childhood_n unto_o youth-head_n and_o from_o that_o unto_o a_o perfect_a man_n in_o christ_n jesus_n therefore_o it_o will_v be_v altogether_o fit_a and_o needful_a for_o thou_o to_o be_v often_o repeat_v these_o former_a step_n of_o conversion_n and_o persist_v therein_o in_o great_a passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n not_o only_o from_o all_o evil_a thing_n but_o even_o from_o these_o which_o be_v not_o clear_a unto_o thou_o to_o be_v good_a or_o at_o least_o harmless_a and_o innocent_a and_o as_o thou_o know_v that_o the_o several_a age_n and_o state_n of_o a_o man_n of_o infancy_n childhood_n youth-head_n and_o perfect_a manhood_n have_v their_o several_a work_n and_o exercise_n proper_a unto_o they_o beside_o what_o be_v proper_a unto_o all_o these_o four_o so_o it_o be_v much_o what_o here_o for_o indeed_o the_o spiritual_a man_n also_o have_v his_o four_o state_n as_o his_o infancy_n his_o childhood_n youth-head_n and_o perfect_a manhood_n now_o if_o thou_o be_v yet_o but_o in_o the_o infancy_n of_o a_o spiritual_a life_n thou_o can_v do_v but_o little_a unless_o to_o turn_v thou_o to_o thy_o mother_n breast_n which_o have_v conceive_v thou_o that_o be_v to_o say_v to_o the_o divine_a and_o holy_a life_n and_o abide_v in_o thy_o conversion_n thereunto_o drink_v in_o the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n that_o thou_o may_v grow_v thereby_o and_o if_o thou_o be_v come_v up_o to_o a_o state_n of_o childhood_n as_o out_o of_o infancy_n yet_o thou_o can_v as_o yet_o not_o do_v many_o nor_o great_a thing_n but_o this_o be_v a_o good_a time_n for_o thou_o to_o go_v unto_o the_o school_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o learn_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n in_o his_o immediate_a teach_n so_o as_o to_o drink_v in_o a_o solid_a sound_n and_o digest_v knowledge_n of_o they_o in_o some_o measure_n before_o thou_o much_o speak_v of_o they_o to_o other_o be_v swift_a to_o hear_v but_o slow_a to_o speak_v but_o if_o thou_o be_v come_v up_o to_o the_o state_n of_o a_o young_a man_n yet_o thou_o can_v not_o do_v all_o those_o thing_n which_o a_o man_n of_o perfect_a age_n can_v neither_o be_v it_o give_v nor_o require_v of_o thou_o vii_o be_v very_o mindful_a to_o regard_v thy_o own_o measure_n of_o life_n so_o that_o thou_o be_v not_o draw_v forth_o or_o lift_v up_o to_o do_v great_a thing_n or_o any_o thing_n in_o a_o great_a or_o high_a strain_n than_o thy_o present_a ability_n of_o life_n permit_v for_o if_o thou_o bend_v or_o screw_v or_o wind_v up_o the_o power_n of_o thy_o soul_n too_o high_a above_o thy_o measure_n yea_o if_o in_o any_o thing_n above_o it_o it_o will_v much_o mar_v and_o spoil_v the_o work_n that_o thou_o be_v about_o and_o displease_v the_o lord_n and_o grieve_v his_o holy_a spirit_n and_o life_n even_o as_o the_o wind_a of_o some_o string_n or_o string_n on_o a_o musical_a instrument_n above_o what_o may_v keep_v in_o true_a concord_n with_o other_o string_n do_v quite_o spoil_v the_o harmony_n and_o render_v it_o ungrateful_a unto_o discern_a ear_n yea_o many_o hereby_o have_v suffer_v great_a loss_n and_o bring_v many_o grievous_a burden_n upon_o that_o holy_a life_n and_o also_o upon_o their_o own_o soul_n in_o so_o do_v and_o let_v not_o the_o great_a measure_n of_o another_o be_v a_o occasion_n to_o draw_v thou_o forth_o from_o thy_o own_o as_o seek_v to_o do_v thing_n equal_o with_o he_o or_o to_o go_v beyond_o he_o also_o to_o mind_n and_o reflect_v by_o a_o inward_a observation_n when_o the_o life_n or_o power_n thereof_o begin_v to_o cease_v or_o shut_v up_o that_o so_o thou_o may_v therein_o also_o follow_v they_o so_o as_o to_o cease_v at_o their_o cease_n to_o be_v shut_v up_o with_o they_o and_o open_v with_o they_o and_o keep_v time_n and_o measure_n and_o touch_n with_o they_o that_o thou_o may_v not_o be_v leave_v do_v alone_o for_o if_o so_o thou_o be_v not_o do_v the_o lords_n work_n but_o thy_o own_o viii_o thou_o be_v to_o learn_v to_o distinguish_v betwixt_o the_o power_n give_v thou_o from_o the_o holy_a life_n to_o do_v such_o and_o such_o thing_n and_o the_o exercise_n of_o that_o power_n for_o though_o the_o power_n may_v be_v say_v after_o a_o sort_n always_o to_o remain_v with_o thou_o while_o the_o life_n itself_o remain_v yet_o thou_o have_v not_o the_o exercise_n of_o this_o power_n at_o thy_o will_n and_o dispose_v and_o so_o thou_o may_v observe_v a_o great_a difference_n betwixt_o thy_o exercise_v thy_o natural_a power_n and_o these_o spiritual_a for_o the_o natural_a thou_o can_v use_v when_o thou_o wilt_v as_o to_o speak_v write_v sing_v natural_o etc._n etc._n but_o thou_o can_v not_o use_v the_o spiritual_a power_n though_o they_o be_v in_o thou_o in_o thy_o own_o will_n therefore_o thou_o be_v to_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n that_o he_o may_v give_v thou_o the_o use_n of_o they_o by_o the_o new_a and_o actual_a influence_n of_o his_o spirit_n upon_o they_o which_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o key_n which_o open_v they_o otherwise_o they_o be_v shut_v up_o and_o lock_v ix_o and_o last_o watch_v against_o the_o enemy_n who_o lie_v near_o thou_o in_o all_o thy_o work_n one_o way_n or_o other_o to_o mar_v they_o for_o indeed_o so_o long_o as_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n live_v in_o thou_o in_o any_o measure_n so_o far_o have_v satan_n a_o place_n in_o thou_o for_o this_o body_n with_o its_o member_n and_o power_n of_o its_o unholy_a life_n be_v the_o very_a kingdom_n and_o throne_n of_o satan_n in_o which_o he_o live_v and_o rule_n after_o a_o sort_n as_o the_o lord_n do_v in_o his_o kingdom_n which_o be_v the_o heavenly_a body_n and_o birth_n with_o the_o member_n and_o power_n thereof_o and_o as_o the_o lord_n do_v work_v mighty_o in_o his_o own_o kingdom_n and_o place_n which_o he_o have_v gain_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o strong_o move_v the_o soul_n with_o its_o power_n to_o concur_v and_o cooperate_v with_o he_o so_o the_o enemy_n work_v strong_o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o lord_n and_o also_o move_v the_o soul_n with_o its_o power_n to_o concur_v and_o cooperat_a with_o he_o and_o thus_o the_o poor_a soul_n be_v set_v as_o betwixt_o two_o contrary_a stream_n the_o one_o seek_v to_o carry_v it_o one_o way_n and_o the_o other_o to_o carry_v it_o to_o the_o contrary_a and_o on_o this_o account_v it_o be_v that_o the_o soul_n sometime_o obey_v the_o one_o and_o sometime_o the_o other_o sometime_o it_o be_v carry_v forward_o and_o sometime_o backward_o yea_o and_o sometime_o it_o do_v the_o lord_n work_n and_o sometime_o the_o work_n of_o the_o enemy_n and_o at_o other_o time_n the_o work_n which_o it_o do_v be_v so_o to_o speak_v mix_v or_o stand_v in_o a_o mixture_n so_o that_o one_o part_n of_o its_o work_n may_v be_v of_o and_o in_o the_o lord_n and_o do_v in_o his_o power_n and_o spirit_n and_o
the_o other_o part_n may_v be_v of_o the_o enemy_n yea_o the_o soul_n may_v begin_v to_o do_v something_o well_o and_o in_o the_o spirit_n and_o yet_o end_v it_o in_o the_o flesh_n through_o its_o weakness_n and_o inadvertency_n nevertheless_o we_o must_v not_o conceive_v any_o such_o mixture_n possible_a as_o if_o what_o the_o lord_n do_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o what_o the_o soul_n do_v with_o he_o and_o by_o his_o power_n and_o spirit_n can_v be_v corrupt_v and_o defile_v by_o the_o enemy_n nay_o for_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v still_o pure_a so_o far_o as_o it_o go_v but_o now_o the_o soul_n give_v way_n to_o the_o enemy_n he_o enter_v and_o so_o put_v a_o stop_n to_o the_o lord_n work_n at_o that_o time_n but_o he_o can_v never_o defile_v or_o corrupt_v it_o and_o thus_o the_o lord_n part_n of_o the_o work_n be_v still_o his_o and_o the_o enemy_n have_v no_o share_n in_o it_o nor_o any_o influence_n upon_o it_o so_o as_o to_o defile_v it_o but_o he_o may_v stop_v it_o as_o the_o lord_n permit_v he_o and_o as_o the_o soul_n give_v he_o way_n so_o to_o do_v now_o one_o may_v ready_o object_n according_a to_o this_o it_o will_v seem_v that_o so_o long_o as_o sin_n have_v any_o life_n or_o power_n in_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v as_o be_v say_v the_o devil_n kingdom_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o it_o to_o do_v any_o work_n unto_o the_o lord_n and_o in_o he_o from_o fiâ—st_n to_o last_o but_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v mar_v and_o stand_v in_o the_o mixture_n as_o aforesaid_a for_o the_o very_a state_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o the_o mixture_n as_o partly_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n have_v place_n therein_o and_o partly_o the_o unholy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n how_o can_v it_o be_v but_o that_o the_o work_n itself_o shall_v stand_v in_o the_o mixture_n also_o and_o that_o proportional_o according_a to_o the_o mixture_n of_o the_o soul_n own_o state_n and_o condition_n for_o while_o the_o soul_n be_v work_v that_o which_o be_v good_a by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n in_o and_o with_o the_o lord_n will_v the_o power_n of_o the_o unholy_a life_n be_v idle_a and_o asleep_a or_o rather_o will_v they_o not_o work_v in_o opposition_n yea_o will_v not_o the_o devil_n move_v strong_o in_o they_o to_o resist_v and_o mar_v the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n answ._n this_o objection_n indeed_o do_v evince_n that_o the_o thing_n be_v somewhat_o difficult_a but_o not_o impossible_a it_o be_v true_a the_o power_n of_o the_o unholy_a life_n do_v of_o their_o own_o nature_n incline_v to_o work_v in_o opposition_n to_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o satan_n will_v never_o be_v want_v as_o much_o as_o he_o can_v to_o move_v and_o stir_v they_o up_o but_o this_o answer_n it_o plain_o that_o as_o the_o soul_n turn_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o breath_n unto_o he_o through_o the_o power_n of_o his_o own_o life_n and_o spirit_n for_o preservation_n and_o continue_v thus_o inward_o turn_v and_o convert_v unto_o he_o in_o fear_n watchfulness_n and_o singleness_n the_o power_n of_o the_o lord_n god_n come_v over_o the_o unholy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n yea_o and_o over_o the_o whole_a power_n of_o the_o enemy_n therein_o and_o do_v bind_v and_o captivate_v they_o that_o they_o can_v no_o more_o prevail_v to_o hinder_v the_o soul_n from_o do_v the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o purity_n and_o perfection_n in_o a_o measure_n then_o if_o they_o have_v no_o such_o place_n in_o it_o even_o as_o in_o the_o outward_a if_o i_o be_v do_v a_o piece_n of_o work_n and_o some_o strong_a body_a man_n have_v a_o resolution_n to_o stop_v or_o mar_v i_o yet_o if_o a_o strong_a than_o he_o come_v and_o bind_v he_o up_o i_o may_v do_v the_o work_v complete_o maugre_o he_o he_o may_v fret_v and_o make_v a_o noise_n like_o a_o mad_a dog_n or_o lion_n upon_o a_o chain_n but_o he_o can_v do_v no_o more_o and_o true_o we_o have_v find_v the_o truth_n of_o this_o many_o time_n in_o our_o own_o experience_n that_o as_o we_o have_v keep_v diligent_a nigh_o unto_o the_o lord_n with_o our_o mind_n towards_o he_o in_o tender_a breathe_n and_o desire_n that_o we_o may_v be_v preserve_v we_o have_v find_v he_o chain_v as_o aforesaid_a but_o when_o we_o have_v but_o a_o little_a become_v remiss_a and_o suffer_v our_o mind_n to_o slide_v back_o from_o that_o diligence_n and_o watchfulness_n as_o be_v requisite_a than_o the_o lord_n suffer_v the_o enemy_n somewhat_o as_o it_o be_v to_o break_v loose_a upon_o we_o and_o use_v his_o strength_n in_o some_o measure_n against_o we_o to_o the_o end_n that_o thereby_o we_o may_v be_v stir_v up_o unto_o the_o more_o watchfulness_n and_o indeed_o many_o time_n we_o find_v it_o so_o with_o we_o in_o this_o matter_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o jew_n at_o the_o rebuild_n of_o the_o city_n who_o be_v so_o put_v to_o it_o that_o while_o they_o build_v with_o the_o one_o hand_n they_o behoove_v to_o fight_v against_o the_o adversary_n with_o the_o other_o thus_o you_o may_v see_v that_o there_o be_v a_o time_n wherein_o sin_n and_o its_o power_n may_v be_v captivate_v before_o it_o be_v utter_o slay_v and_o the_o strong_a man_n may_v be_v bind_v before_o he_o be_v utter_o cast_v out_o chap._n ix_o show_v how_o that_o though_o work_n can_v have_v no_o great_a influence_n upon_o the_o very_a first_o beginning_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n that_o be_v only_o receive_v through_o a_o receptive_a faith_n yet_o they_o do_v great_o conduce_v unto_o the_o growth_n and_o continuance_n thereof_o also_o unto_o the_o kill_n and_o mortification_n of_o the_o sinful_a and_o unholy_a life_n with_o its_o power_n more_o and_o more_o till_o it_o be_v utter_o slay_v where_o also_o the_o distinction_n of_o a_o twofold_a property_n of_o faith_n viz._n receptive_a and_o operative_a be_v somewhat_o open_v work_v out_o your_o salvation_n say_v the_o apostle_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a it_o be_v observable_a he_o do_v not_o bid_v they_o begin_v their_o salvation_n with_o work_n but_o that_o they_o shall_v work_v it_o out_o or_o proceed_v in_o it_o through_o work_n which_o be_v a_o manifest_a proof_n that_o work_n have_v a_o great_a use_n and_o service_n promote_a and_o carry_v on_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o soul_n though_o they_o can_v begin_v it_o and_o concern_v the_o great_a use_n they_o have_v unto_o this_o effect_n paul_n the_o same_o apostle_n say_v again_o rom._n 8._o if_o you_o live_v after_o the_o flâ—sh_n you_o shall_v die_v but_o if_o you_o through_o the_o spirit_n do_v mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o body_n you_o shall_v live_v wherein_o these_o two_o thing_n be_v plain_o imply_v 1._o that_o carnal_a and_o evil_a work_n that_o be_v a_o live_n after_o the_o flesh_n occasion_n death_n upon_o they_o who_o be_v come_v to_o some_o measure_n of_o spiritual_a life_n evil_a and_o unholy_a work_n be_v deadn_v and_o kill_v they_o be_v like_o a_o canker_n which_o eat_v out_o the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n 2._o that_o good_a and_o holy_a work_n serve_v not_o only_o to_o preserve_v the_o measure_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n already_o attain_v but_o to_o increase_v and_o improve_v it_o and_o this_o same_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o talent_n do_v plain_o hold_v forth_o for_o he_o who_o receive_v but_o two_o talent_n yet_o improve_n the_o same_o and_o put_v they_o to_o use_v they_o become_v multiply_v into_o four_o so_o he_o who_o receive_v the_o five_o by_o use_v they_o gain_v other_o five_o many_o other_o scripture_n exaâ—mples_n can_v be_v bring_v to_o prove_v the_o trâ—â—â—_n of_o it_o but_o these_o shall_v at_o present_a suffice_v moreover_o the_o very_a nature_n of_o the_o thing_n do_v also_o demonstrate_v it_o for_o it_o be_v here_o the_o same_o as_o to_o the_o spiritual_a life_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o natural_a for_o the_o natural_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o become_v strong_a and_o strong_a the_o more_o it_o be_v upon_o motion_n and_o exercise_n as_o we_o see_v by_o daily_a experience_n but_o there_o be_v this_o difference_n that_o the_o natural_a life_n after_o it_o have_v come_v to_o its_o height_n do_v decay_n and_o even_o spend_v or_o consume_v itself_o in_o its_o motion_n or_o work_n for_o it_o be_v but_o a_o temporary_a thing_n whereas_o the_o spiritual_a life_n be_v eternal_a and_o do_v never_o at_o any_o time_n decay_n or_o diminish_v through_o its_o work_n but_o be_v thereby_o perpetuate_v it_o be_v such_o a_o good_a plant_n that_o it_o ever_o grow_v and_o flourish_v and_o bring_v forth_o twelve_o manner_n of_o fruit_n every_o month_n where_o it_o be_v well_o occupy_v or_o improve_v and_o never_o of_o its_o own_o nature_n decay_v or_o wax_v barren_a
suffering_n as_o in_o a_o wine-press_n to_o the_o end_n that_o sweet_a wine_n may_v come_v forth_o that_o have_v the_o virtue_n in_o it_o to_o cure_v man_n of_o their_o wound_n both_o in_o relation_n to_o wrath_n and_o sin_n and_o so_o when_o he_o cry_v forth_o with_o a_o loud_a voice_n upon_o the_o cross_n my_o god_n etc._n etc._n even_o therein_o and_o there_o through_o virtue_n go_v from_o he_o in_o that_o holy_a breath_n or_o spirit_n which_o have_v and_o have_v a_o most_o effectual_a influence_n upon_o both_o man_n and_o the_o creation_n for_o their_o deliverance_n as_o aforesaid_a for_o nothing_o that_o he_o ever_o do_v or_o suffer_v be_v in_o vain_a or_o without_o virtue_n and_o influence_n unto_o man_n salvation_n and_o thus_o have_v declare_v the_o great_a influence_n which_o the_o very_a outward_a come_n birth_n life_n suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n of_o christ_n have_v upon_o man_n both_o for_o their_o justification_n and_o sanctification_n let_v we_o now_o see_v how_o and_o in_o what_o manner_n we_o shall_v improve_v the_o same_o effectual_o in_o order_n thereunto_o for_o indeed_o we_o shall_v find_v how_o the_o apostle_n do_v great_o improve_v and_o make_v use_n of_o it_o in_o order_n unto_o mortification_n or_o die_v unto_o sin_n and_o live_v unto_o holiness_n and_o make_v progress_n therein_o unto_o perfection_n as_o to_o instance_n in_o some_o few_o example_n rom._n 6.2_o how_o shall_v we_o that_o be_v dead_a to_o sin_n live_v any_o long_a therein_o know_v you_o not_o that_o as_o many_o of_o we_o as_o be_v baptize_v into_o jesus_n christ_n be_v as_o if_o it_o have_v be_v unto_o himself_o yea_o herein_o he_o give_v a_o most_o convince_a testimony_n how_o he_o have_v bear_v and_o suffer_v with_o wonderful_a long-suffering_a the_o iniquity_n of_o man_n which_o strike_v against_o his_o inward_a life_n and_o spirit_n of_o his_o son_n in_o all_o age_n and_o generation_n before_o the_o wound_a and_o crucify_a it_o in_o they_o as_o now_o they_o do_v against_o he_o in_o the_o outward_a by_o which_o man_n may_v be_v great_o convince_v that_o the_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v their_o salvation_n in_o so_o bear_v and_o suffer_v they_o for_o have_v he_o not_o intend_v love_n to_o they_o herein_o he_o may_v have_v ease_v himself_o of_o his_o adversary_n in_o a_o moment_n and_o altogether_o deliver_v that_o tender_a life_n and_o spirit_n of_o his_o son_n from_o its_o suffering_n in_o they_o and_o bring_v intolerable_a suffering_n upon_o the_o transgressor_n themselves_o also_o herein_o the_o lord_n give_v a_o great_a testimony_n of_o his_o power_n to_o save_v in_o as_o much_o as_o though_o he_o deliver_v up_o his_o son_n to_o suffer_v most_o deep_a affliction_n in_o and_o under_o sinner_n yet_o in_o due_a time_n he_o raise_v he_o up_o again_o even_o from_o death_n and_o do_v manifest_o set_v he_o over_o all_o his_o adversary_n according_a to_o the_o work_n of_o which_o mighty_a power_n he_o be_v able_a to_o save_v unto_o the_o uttermost_a all_o that_o come_v unto_o god_n by_o he_o and_o so_o these_o thing_n be_v inward_o present_v and_o set_v before_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o spirit_n and_o light_n of_o jesus_n christ_n be_v indeed_o very_o forcible_a and_o prevail_a to_o work_v faith_n in_o it_o both_o upon_o the_o mercy_n and_o power_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o to_o rest_v and_o stay_v its_o faith_n upon_o he_o for_o its_o full_a and_o perfect_a salvation_n as_o also_o to_o work_v and_o beget_v love_n unto_o he_o in_o the_o inward_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o wonderful_a love_n of_o god_n as_o manifest_v itself_o even_o so_o in_o the_o outward_a ii_o and_o yet_o more_o particular_o the_o come_n suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n as_o present_v by_o his_o spirit_n in_o the_o soul_n as_o aforesaid_a have_v a_o very_a special_a influence_n to_o kindle_v most_o ardent_a love_n in_o it_o towards_o he_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o that_o love_n of_o his_o so_o wonderful_o manifest_v in_o the_o outward_a whereby_o for_o the_o soul_n save_v from_o sin_n and_o wrath_n he_o so_o humble_v himself_o by_o so_o many_o step_n and_o degree_n and_o bear_v such_o indignity_n and_o suffering_n as_o never_o any_o one_o do_v and_o all_o in_o love_n to_o the_o soul_n and_o for_o it_o and_o for_o its_o deliverance_n as_o aforesaid_a and_o that_o he_o shall_v be_v manifest_a in_o the_o outward_a body_n and_o suffer_v so_o deep_o therein_o even_o for_o the_o deliver_v our_o outward_a body_n also_o from_o sin_n and_o wrath_n these_o thing_n i_o say_v as_o present_v and_o set_v before_o the_o soul_n in_o his_o own_o spirit_n as_o it_o be_v himself_o tell_v it_o in_o a_o particular_a way_n how_o he_o have_v humble_v himself_o and_o what_o he_o have_v do_v and_o suffer_v for_o it_o be_v strong_a and_o prevail_a occasion_n to_o work_v most_o ardent_a and_o dear_a love_n in_o the_o soul_n towards_o he_o and_o his_o spirit_n and_o towards_o the_o father_n also_o who_o free_a gift_n of_o love_n he_o be_v iii_o and_o they_o have_v indeed_o a_o great_a influence_n when_o present_v in_o his_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a to_o work_v in_o our_o heart_n true_a and_o real_a repentance_n from_o all_o our_o sin_n yea_o and_o a_o perfect_a and_o universal_a hatred_n against_o they_o as_o have_v a_o sense_n that_o our_o sin_n be_v the_o occasion_n of_o his_o suffering_n yea_o his_o deep_a and_o heavy_a suffering_n even_o in_o his_o soul_n in_o the_o outward_a be_v through_o the_o burden_n of_o our_o iniquity_n which_o he_o then_o do_v bear_v so_o that_o the_o wound_n he_o get_v in_o his_o bless_a body_n with_o the_o nail_n and_o the_o spear_n and_o the_o thorn_n and_o the_o violent_a hand_n of_o man_n be_v nothing_o comparable_a to_o these_o wound_n he_o have_v in_o his_o righteous_a soul_n and_o
life_n through_o the_o burden_n and_o weight_n of_o man_n iniquity_n but_o how_o christ_n do_v suffer_v under_o the_o iniquity_n of_o man_n and_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n thereof_o can_v never_o be_v understand_v in_o any_o true_a measure_n but_o by_o these_o alone_o who_o be_v come_v to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o a_o measure_n of_o his_o righteous_a life_n in_o their_o own_o particular_n and_o to_o know_v a_o measure_n of_o redemption_n from_o sin_n thereby_o such_o will_v feel_v how_o that_o righteous_a life_n of_o christ_n jesus_n suffer_v by_o sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n thereof_o so_o that_o many_o time_n we_o have_v feel_v the_o life_n of_o he_o in_o we_o to_o be_v deep_o smite_v and_o wound_v and_o deep_o to_o suffer_v through_o and_o by_o iniquity_n and_o the_o spirit_n of_o it_o even_o in_o other_o and_o in_o a_o whole_a country_n and_o nation_n yea_o in_o some_o measure_n through_o the_o whole_a world_n the_o reason_n of_o which_o be_v because_o of_o that_o deep_a and_o near_a sympathy_n that_o his_o life_n in_o the_o saint_n have_v with_o the_o seed_n of_o that_o life_n that_o be_v oppress_v in_o other_o till_o it_o be_v raise_v so_o that_o many_o in_o who_o this_o righteous_a life_n be_v raise_v to_o reign_v in_o perfect_a dominion_n over_o all_o its_o contrary_a in_o their_o own_o particular_n yet_o witness_v many_o time_n its_o deep_a suffering_n through_o its_o sympathy_n with_o that_o seed_n of_o its_o own_o nature_n oppress_v and_o murder_v in_o other_o so_o that_o indeed_o upon_o the_o matter_n this_o righteous_a life_n in_o none_o of_o the_o saint_n will_v be_v whole_o deliver_v from_o its_o suffering_n till_o that_o of_o its_o own_o nature_n over_o all_o the_o world_n be_v raise_v up_o in_o all_o heart_n to_o reign_v with_o it_o in_o dominion_n either_o in_o full_a love_n or_o wrath_n and_o true_o these_o deep_a suffering_n of_o christ_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o man_n iniquity_n real_o feel_v and_o witness_v by_o he_o as_o in_o the_o garden_n and_o on_o the_o cross_n etc._n etc._n i_o find_v the_o professor_n know_v little_a or_o nothing_o of_o for_o they_o conceive_v not_o that_o christ_n suffer_v any_o other_o way_n by_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n lay_v on_o he_o then_o in_o that_o he_o suffer_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n that_o be_v due_a to_o man_n for_o sin_n and_o so_o they_o understand_v his_o bear_v our_o sin_n to_o be_v only_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n he_o do_v bear_v which_o be_v not_o so_o for_o he_o suffer_v much_o more_o deep_o by_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o because_o of_o that_o great_a and_o implacable_a contrariety_n and_o enmity_n which_o sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o have_v against_o his_o tender_a life_n which_o at_o that_o time_n have_v muster_v up_o all_o its_o force_n against_o he_o the_o lord_n permit_v it_o so_o to_o be_v that_o by_o his_o patient_a and_o meek_a suffering_n he_o may_v overcome_v it_o as_o indeed_o he_o do_v and_o even_o upon_o the_o cross_n triumph_v over_o it_o and_o give_v the_o spirit_n of_o transgression_n the_o great_a blow_n and_o wound_n that_o ever_o it_o get_v which_o shall_v in_o due_a time_n by_o the_o virtue_n and_o power_n of_o his_o suffering_n be_v utter_o slay_v and_o extinguish_v in_o the_o earth_n and_o it_o fill_v with_o his_o holy_a and_o righteous_a spirit_n and_o this_o spirit_n of_o iniquity_n wrought_v what_o it_o can_v so_o to_o eclipse_n and_o vail_v the_o presence_n of_o god_n from_o his_o righteous_a soul_n as_o to_o take_v away_o that_o comfort_n and_o joy_n from_o he_o which_o at_o other_o time_n he_o have_v yet_o his_o faith_n pierce_v through_o this_o cloud_n that_o it_o do_v not_o overcome_v he_o but_o he_o overcome_v it_o and_o signify_v his_o faith_n in_o god_n say_v my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o which_o respect_v that_o sensible_a joy_n and_o comfort_n yet_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o this_o deep_a trial_n the_o father_n be_v with_o he_o in_o love_n and_o in_o the_o power_n and_o virtue_n of_o that_o love_n the_o wrath_n become_v mitigate_v and_o qualify_v towards_o man_n and_o to_o speak_v proper_o the_o wrath_n be_v indeed_o against_o man_n but_o never_o on_o any_o account_n direct_o against_o christ_n who_o do_v indeed_o intervene_v and_o intermediate_v betwixt_o it_o and_o we_o to_o bear_v it_o off_o and_o qualify_v it_o as_o be_v abovesaid_a yet_o he_o can_v never_o suffer_v it_o as_o the_o damn_a do_v for_o he_o qualify_v it_o both_o in_o the_o father_n love_n and_o in_o his_o own_o but_o the_o wrath_n which_o the_o damn_a suffer_v have_v no_o such_o qualification_n and_o true_o we_o can_v judge_v that_o the_o father_n be_v to_o speak_v proper_o offend_v or_o displease_v with_o he_o nay_o not_o on_o our_o account_n nor_o do_v the_o scripture_n speak_v any_o thing_n so_o only_o it_o please_v the_o father_n thus_o to_o try_v he_o and_o make_v he_o perfect_a thus_o by_o suffering_n to_o the_o end_n he_o may_v overcome_v sin_n and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o in_o the_o more_o glory_n and_o may_v be_v the_o more_o fit_v to_o help_v they_o that_o be_v under_o trial_n as_o be_v touch_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o our_o infirmity_n four_o be_v present_v in_o his_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a they_o have_v also_o great_a influence_n to_o raise_v in_o our_o soul_n most_o fervent_a breathe_n and_o supplication_n unto_o the_o lord_n not_o only_o for_o his_o pardon_v and_o forgive_a grace_n for_o and_o because_o of_o his_o son_n bloodshed_n his_o suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n by_o which_o he_o procure_v or_o purchase_v it_o but_o also_o for_o his_o sanctify_a and_o mortify_v grace_n even_o for_o a_o abundant_a measure_n of_o the_o life_n and_o spirit_n of_o grace_n whereby_o we_o may_v be_v enable_v to_o die_v perfect_o unto_o sin_n and_o live_v unto_o god_n in_o perfection_n of_o holiness_n so_o thâ—t_v the_o soul_n may_v strong_o plead_v with_o the_o lord_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o christ_n that_o he_o may_v pour_v forth_o abundant_o of_o his_o grace_n life_n light_n and_o spirit_n because_o that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n have_v purchase_v it_o abundant_o and_o have_v open_v the_o fountain_n of_o the_o father_n love_n abundant_o by_o his_o obedience_n and_o righteousness_n to_o the_o end_n that_o all_o soul_n may_v come_v and_o draw_v out_o of_o that_o fullness_n of_o he_o which_o he_o have_v purchase_v and_o be_v in_o he_o even_o grace_n for_o grace_n joh._n 1.16_o both_o to_o justify_v and_o sanctify_v and_o as_o much_o the_o one_o as_o the_o other_o v._o also_o these_o thing_n present_v in_o the_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a and_o in_o and_o thereby_o apply_v to_o the_o soul_n become_v very_o strong_a and_o forcible_a motive_n unto_o it_o to_o war_n against_o sin_n universal_o and_o the_o spirit_n thereof_o to_o the_o utter_a kill_n and_o destroy_v of_o it_o see_v it_o be_v the_o great_a enemy_n of_o that_o tender_a life_n of_o christ_n which_o suffer_v so_o much_o on_o this_o account_n even_o to_o the_o mortify_n of_o the_o soul_n unto_o sin_n and_o save_v it_o therefrom_o so_o that_o if_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o diligent_o apply_v itself_o unto_o a_o total_a mortification_n of_o sin_n it_o do_v nothing_o answer_v unto_o that_o love_n and_o goodwill_n of_o christ_n in_o his_o suffering_n nor_o to_o the_o end_n thereof_o they_o be_v also_o of_o the_o same_o force_n to_o move_v the_o soul_n to_o follow_v after_o holiness_n till_o it_o attain_v unto_o it_o so_o as_o to_o be_v pure_a and_o holy_a as_o christ_n its_o belove_a and_o spouse_n who_o give_v himself_o for_o she_o that_o she_o may_v be_v holy_a and_o to_o present_v she_o unto_o god_n without_o spot_n or_o wrinkle_n or_o any_o such_o thing_n eph._n 5.27_o also_o how_o can_v the_o soul_n but_o be_v move_v to_o press_v after_o holiness_n see_v it_o inward_o feel_v that_o the_o righteous_a life_n of_o christ_n be_v as_o much_o ease_v and_o refresh_v and_o delight_v in_o its_o become_a holy_a as_o ever_o it_o be_v former_o grieve_v and_o burden_v with_o its_o iniquity_n vi_o our_o bless_a lord_n in_o his_o outward_a come_n life_n and_o way_n of_o conversation_n doctrine_n suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n be_v a_o most_o noble_a and_o perfect_a example_n unto_o we_o even_o the_o best_a that_o ever_o outward_o be_v be_v or_o shall_v be_v that_o we_o may_v imitate_v his_o virtue_n and_o follow_v his_o step_n in_o all_o godliness_n temperance_n and_o righteousness_n who_o teach_v we_o most_o excellent_a document_n and_o instruction_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n both_o in_o doctrine_n and_o example_n and_o seal_v the_o same_o with_o his_o most_o holy_a and_o bless_a suffering_n who_o know_v no_o sin_n yet_o so_o willing_o
