fall_v yea_o fall_v from_o grace_n and_o also_o how_o far_o they_o may_v fall_v and_o then_o proceed_v to_o demonstrate_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o proposition_n and_o prove_v that_o they_o can_v fall_v final_o so_o as_o eternal_o to_o perish_v 1._o those_o that_o i_o call_v the_o saint_n of_o god_n or_o sheep_n of_o christ_n be_v those_o who_o be_v elect_v or_o choose_v in_o jesus_n christ_n such_o that_o it_o secure_v all_o that_o be_v in_o it_o from_o final_a fall_v or_o full_o serve_v to_o demonstrate_v they_o must_v and_o shall_v all_o eternal_o be_v save_v and_o to_o make_v this_o good_a 1_o sy_n it_o be_v because_o election_n be_v absolute_a not_o a_o conditional_a election_n fall_v depend_v on_o the_o obedience_n or_o good_a behaviour_n of_o the_o creature_n the_o decree_n of_o god_n on_o his_o part_n be_v irrevocable_a god_n will_v not_o go_v back_o from_o his_o purpose_n to_o save_v his_o people_n nor_o shall_v their_o unworthiness_n or_o miscarriage_n make_v it_o void_a it_o be_v the_o high_a unalterable_a and_o supreme_a law_n of_o heaven_n therefore_o it_o be_v say_v to_o be_v according_a to_o his_o eternal_a purpose_n and_o counsel_n his_o counsel_n and_o thought_n of_o his_o heart_n shall_v stand_v for_o ever_o it_o be_v that_o that_o all_o subordinate_a mean_n must_v terminate_v in_o and_o all_o inferiors_n administration_n must_v be_v accommodate_v thereunto_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o elect_a be_v the_o grand_a design_n of_o god_n whereby_o to_o exalt_v and_o magnify_v his_o high_a glory_n that_o shall_v his_o glorious_a contrivance_n and_o who_o may_v carry_v on_o a_o different_a interest_n or_o enemy_n may_v invade_v they_o conquer_v they_o and_o spoil_v all_o their_o design_n and_o purpose_n but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o here_o god_n foresee_v all_o future_a event_n his_o mind_n alter_v not_o he_o be_v of_o one_o mind_n and_o who_o can_v turn_v he_o and_o none_o 13._o can_v hinder_v he_o in_o the_o accomplish_n of_o his_o own_o eternal_a purpose_n for_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n have_v purpose_v and_o who_o shall_v disannul_v it_o etc._n etc._n declare_v from_o the_o beginning_n and_o from_o ancient_a time_n my_o counsel_n saint_n final_a perseverance_n several_a of_o which_o i_o have_v answer_v already_o as_o i_o meet_v with_o they_o occasional_o under_o divers_a of_o those_o argument_n i_o have_v speak_v to_o in_o clear_v up_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o proposition_n therefore_o shall_v labour_v to_o answer_v such_o that_o remain_v which_o take_v as_o they_o here_o follow_v object_n 1._o if_o christ_n do_v not_o die_v for_o all_o how_o can_v the_o birth_n of_o our_o answer_v saviour_n be_v say_v to_o be_v matter_n of_o joy_n unto_o all_o people_n and_o the_o angel_n say_v unto_o they_o fear_v not_o for_o 28._o as_o you_o have_v it_o in_o joel_n that_o be_v upon_o person_n of_o every_o age_n sex_n and_o degree_n upon_o young_a old_a master_n servant_n son_n and_o daughter_n so_o it_o may_v be_v take_v here_o and_o in_o several_a other_o place_n as_o that_o in_o 1_o tim._n 2._o 4._o who_o will_v have_v all_o man_n save_v etc._n etc._n that_o be_v kings_z as_o well_o as_o peasant_n noble_a as_o well_o as_o ignoble_a rich_a as_o well_o as_o poor_a gentile_n as_o well_o as_o jew_n or_o some_o of_o all_o sort_n the_o gospel_n be_v say_v to_o be_v preach_v in_o paul_n time_n to_o every_o creature_n under_o heaven_n 23._o whereas_o it_o reach_v then_o but_o to_o a_o small_a part_n of_o the_o world_n one_o great_a part_n not_o be_v at_o that_o time_n know_v or_o find_v out_o as_o one_o well_o observe_v 2._o be_v the_o birth_n of_o christ_n matter_n of_o joy_n in_o the_o effect_n of_o it_o to_o judas_n and_o to_o the_o unbelieve_a jew_n and_o to_o many_o more_o 3._o i_o argue_v thus_o if_o the_o birth_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n be_v cause_n of_o great_a joy_n to_o all_o person_n individual_o consider_v it_o must_v be_v thus_o either_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o design_n purpose_n and_o intention_n of_o god_n because_o of_o such_o joy_n unto_o they_o or_o else_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o certain_a effect_n of_o his_o birth_n and_o death_n but_o 1._o who_o will_v say_v that_o god_n according_a to_o his_o eternal_a purpose_n and_o design_n do_v intend_v it_o for_o the_o salvation_n of_o every_o individual_a person_n none_o can_v be_v so_o weak_a sure_o to_o assert_v that_o for_o who_o shall_v resist_v god_n will_n or_o withstand_v god_n absolute_a design_n purpose_n and_o intention_n christ_n must_v accomplish_v or_o effect_v the_o salvation_n of_o all_o if_o in_o that_o sense_n it_o be_v matter_n or_o cause_n of_o joy_n unto_o all_o or_o that_o he_o die_v for_o all_o or_o that_o god_n will_v have_v all_o that_o be_v every_o individual_a man_n and_o woman_n in_o the_o world_n save_v 2._o and_o as_o to_o the_o effect_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n it_o be_v evident_a quite_o otherwise_o for_o multitude_n have_v no_o save_a benefit_n thereby_o therefore_o it_o follow_v clear_o that_o that_o be_v not_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o text_n nor_o mind_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n though_o in_o some_o sense_n the_o birth_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n be_v cause_n of_o joy_n to_o all_o since_o every_o one_o receive_v all_o that_o good_a thereby_o whatsoever_o it_o be_v they_o be_v possess_v of_o 4._o do_v not_o simeon_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n say_v that_o this_o child_n speak_v of_o christ_n be_v set_v for_o the_o fall_n and_o rise_v again_o of_o many_o in_o israel_n 34._o unto_o some_o the_o word_n be_v a_o savour_n of_o death_n none_o shall_v be_v save_v but_o those_o that_o god_n have_v ordain_v to_o eternal_a life_n what_o need_v man_n seek_v after_o or_o regard_v the_o salvation_n of_o their_o soul_n answ_n this_o objection_n we_o have_v large_o answer_v under_o our_o first_o argument_n to_o prove_v the_o saint_n final_a perseverance_n take_v from_o the_o treatise_n election_n of_o grace_n to_o which_o i_o refer_v you_o object_n 3._o this_o doctrine_n of_o election_n and_o final_a perseverance_n tend_v to_o make_v man_n loose_a and_o remiss_a in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n answ_n 1._o what_o can_v be_v a_o great_a mistake_n do_v the_o certain_a sin_n ground_n of_o hope_n of_o obtain_v the_o victory_n tend_v to_o make_v a_o soldier_n remiss_a and_o careless_a when_o engage_v in_o the_o battle_n or_o do_v they_o not_o much_o more_o animate_v he_o to_o fight_v courageous_o 2._o shall_v a_o child_n be_v take_v off_o from_o his_o duty_n or_o be_v remiss_a in_o serve_v his_o father_n because_o his_o father_n tell_v he_o he_o shall_v never_o be_v disinherit_v 3._o do_v not_o christ_n know_v that_o the_o angel_n have_v charge_n over_o he_o yet_o be_v he_o less_o careful_a of_o his_o own_o think_v repentance_n a_o harsh_a doctrine_n no_o no_o it_o be_v sweet_a and_o bless_a tiding_n to_o hear_v that_o there_o be_v repentance_n vouchsafe_v to_o poor_a sinner_n yea_o for_o the_o worst_a of_o sinner_n beside_o be_v not_o repentance_n the_o very_a first_o doctrine_n jesus_n christ_n preach_v when_o he_o enter_v upon_o his_o ministry_n he_o call_v upon_o man_n to_o repent_v and_o believe_v the_o gospel_n he_o declare_v there_o be_v a_o way_n find_v out_o for_o pardon_n and_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o what_o can_v so_o kind_o and_o sweet_o excite_v or_o stir_v up_o sinner_n to_o repentance_n as_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o infinite_a mercy_n and_o pardon_v grace_n of_o god_n through_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o jesus_n christ_n his_o mercy_n only_o melt_v and_o break_v the_o hard_a heart_n of_o guilty_a criminal_n 3._o to_o preach_v the_o combination_n and_o threaten_n of_o god_n wrath_n and_o vengeance_n against_o all_o ungodly_a and_o impenitent_a sinner_n who_o slight_a and_o neglect_v the_o salvation_n of_o the_o gospel_n can_v be_v no_o legal_a doctrine_n 1._o because_o the_o gospel_n abound_v with_o they_o yea_o and_o more_o fearful_a threaten_n than_o those_o be_v under_o the_o law_n for_o the_o one_o be_v threat_n of_o temporal_a punishment_n but_o the_o other_o be_v eternal_a even_o the_o denunciation_n of_o god_n wrath_n in_o hell_n for_o ever_o 2._o because_o of_o the_o greatness_n of_o that_o mercy_n and_o divine_a grace_n and_o goodness_n which_o such_o who_o sin_n under_o the_o gospel_n do_v abuse_v and_o tread_v under_o their_o foot_n 3._o to_o show_v the_o justice_n headship_n and_o authority_n of_o jesus_n christ_n who_o be_v god_n as_o well_o as_o man_n that_o so_o all_o man_n may_v stand_v in_o awe_n of_o he_o and_o dread_a and_o fear_v he_o because_o of_o his_o great_a love_n and_o goodness_n extend_v through_o his_o suffering_n for_o sin_n and_o endure_v the_o heavy_a wrath_n of_o god_n for_o we_o and_o for_o many_o other_o reason_n which_o you_o have_v hear_v 4._o because_o the_o threaten_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v not_o only_o render_v god_n as_o a_o just_a revenger_n but_o also_o as_o a_o merciful_a redeemer_n not_o only_o as_o a_o judge_n to_o pass_v sentence_n but_o as_o a_o gracious_a sovereign_n ready_a to_o give_v forth_o pardon_v to_o all_o convict_a break_a and_o self-condemned_n rebel_n the_o law_n threaten_v death_n but_o afford_v no_o offer_n of_o life_n on_o any_o term_n that_o can_v be_v attain_v to_o therefore_o no_o encouragement_n give_v by_o it_o to_o sinner_n to_o humble_v themselves_o it_o command_v perfect_a obedience_n but_o afford_v no_o strength_n to_o perform_v it_o pronounce_v the_o sentence_n against_o we_o but_o produce_v no_o pardon_n for_o we_o it_o command_v we_o to_o trust_v in_o god_n but_o reveal_v not_o a_o mediator_n who_o be_v the_o immediate_a object_n of_o faith_n and_o trust_n 5._o the_o threaten_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v a_o manifestation_n of_o god_n goodness_n as_o a_o father_n threaten_v his_o child_n from_o that_o love_n and_o bowel_n he_o have_v to_o it_o that_o so_o it_o may_v not_o feel_v the_o lash_n of_o his_o rod_n and_o anger_n and_o o_o how_o be_v gospel-threatning_n mix_v with_o allure_a motive_n and_o endear_n argument_n and_o persuasion_n intimate_v how_o ready_a god_n be_v to_o pass_v by_o our_o offence_n if_o we_o submit_v ourselves_o to_o he_o and_o accept_v of_o the_o offer_v of_o his_o grace_n and_o favour_n if_o such_o preach_n of_o wrath_n therefore_o be_v legal_a i_o must_v acknowledge_v my_o great_a ignorance_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o jesus_n christ_n beside_o how_o long_o be_v the_o threaten_n of_o the_o gospel_n defer_v before_o execute_v the_o contemner_n of_o the_o law_n die_v present_o as_o well_o as_o it_o discover_v no_o remedy_n but_o so_o it_o be_v not_o here_o god_n seem_v to_o be_v ready_a to_o forgive_v and_o slow_a to_o wrath_n he_o wait_v long_o before_o he_o strike_v and_o bring_v wrath_n unless_o we_o become_v doer_n of_o that_o law_n which_o christ_n come_v not_o to_o destroy_v but_o as_o our_o example_n to_o fulfil_v we_o can_v never_o be_v justify_v before_o god_n nor_o let_v any_o fancy_n that_o christ_n have_v so_o fulfil_v it_o for_o they_o as_o to_o exclude_v their_o obedience_n from_o be_v requisite_a to_o their_o acceptance_n but_o only_o as_o their_o pattern_n now_o this_o be_v a_o legal_a doctrine_n with_o a_o witness_n these_o man_n will_v be_v look_v upon_o as_o true_a preacher_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o let_v all_o man_n be_v aware_a of_o they_o be_v any_o man_n able_a perfect_o to_o keep_v the_o law_n if_o so_o why_o do_v the_o apostle_n say_v 3._o what_o the_o law_n can_v not_o do_v in_o that_o it_o be_v weak_a through_o the_o flesh_n god_n send_v his_o son_n etc._n etc._n beside_o if_o there_o have_v be_v a_o law_n that_o can_v have_v give_v life_n very_o say_v paul_n righteousness_n shall_v have_v be_v by_o the_o law_n and_o again_o he_o say_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n no_o man_n be_v 21._o justify_v and_o if_o righteousness_n come_v by_o the_o law_n then_o be_v christ_n dead_a in_o vain_a christ_n it_o seem_v by_o what_o this_o man_n say_v come_v only_o to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n as_o our_o example_n that_o we_o may_v conform_v to_o he_o therein_o and_o so_o be_v justify_v by_o it_o but_o he_o forget_v that_o we_o and_o all_o mankind_n have_v break_v the_o law_n and_o stand_v charge_v and_o condemn_v thereby_o unto_o eternal_a condemnation_n and_o who_o shall_v make_v atonement_n for_o that_o breach_n and_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o curse_n thereby_o incur_v no_o doctrine_n can_v cast_v high_a contempt_n upon_o christ_n and_o invalidate_v his_o suffer_v and_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o in_o he_o than_o this_o doctrine_n do_v 2._o such_o preach_v a_o legal_a doctrine_n who_o preach_v up_o obedience_n by_o we_o to_o the_o law_n or_o gospel_n either_o as_o the_o procure_n or_o move_v cause_n and_o condition_n of_o our_o justification_n and_o eternal_a life_n 3._o such_o also_o preach_v a_o legal_a doctrine_n who_o preach_v up_o wrath_n and_o divine_a vengeance_n to_o scare_v or_o frighten_v man_n out_o of_o their_o sin_n and_o as_o if_o by_o the_o bare_a leave_v and_o forsake_v of_o sin_n man_n may_v escape_v death_n and_o wrath._n such_o a_o doctrine_n as_o reverend_a dr._n owen_n note_n may_v fill_v a_o unregenerate_a man_n with_o horror_n and_o servile_a fear_n whereby_o as_o bond-servant_n or_o slave_n by_o the_o whip_n of_o this_o doctrine_n they_o may_v be_v force_v to_o break_v off_o from_o some_o gross_a act_n of_o sin_n and_o perform_v some_o outward_a duty_n of_o religion_n which_o otherwise_o they_o be_v unwilling_a to_o do_v for_o as_o it_o be_v not_o from_o love_n to_o god_n nor_o from_o faith_n in_o christ_n so_o they_o find_v no_o delight_n nor_o sweetness_n in_o it_o but_o be_v often_o remiss_a and_o see_v cause_n to_o doubt_v of_o the_o sincerity_n of_o their_o obedience_n they_o fall_v under_o terror_n and_o slavish_a fear_n they_o only_o act_v from_o a_o enlighten_v conscience_n and_o not_o from_o faith_n or_o renew_v grace_n these_o man_n neither_o love_v the_o law_n nor_o gospel_n though_o they_o be_v force_v to_o keep_v up_o in_o some_o degree_n of_o obedience_n to_o it_o 4._o such_o preach_v a_o legal_a doctrine_n that_o affirm_v man_n be_v own_o faith_n and_o inherent_a righteousness_n for_o the_o sake_n of_o christ_n merit_n be_v part_n of_o our_o righteousness_n to_o justification_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n and_o that_o christ_n have_v procure_v or_o merit_v a_o mild_a law_n of_o grace_n of_o faith_n and_o sincere_a obedience_n in_o the_o room_n of_o the_o law_n of_o perfect_a obedience_n which_o law_n of_o sinless_a obedience_n christ_n have_v give_v to_o god_n a_o full_a recompense_n for_o our_o breach_n of_o he_o have_v take_v that_o law-away_a and_o that_o so_o far_o as_o we_o faithful_o live_v up_o to_o this_o new_a law_n of_o grace_n we_o be_v justify_v in_o
god_n sight_n and_o accept_v for_o the_o sake_n of_o christ_n merit_n not_o that_o christ_n righteousness_n alone_o be_v the_o matter_n of_o our_o justification_n exclusive_a of_o all_o our_o inherent_a righteousness_n and_o obedience_n no_o no_o but_o rather_o it_o be_v our_o righteousness_n which_o do_v justify_v we_o the_o gospel_n according_a to_o these_o man_n be_v propound_v as_o a_o law_n and_o god_n as_o a_o rector_n or_o just_a governor_n command_v obedience_n thereunto_o as_o the_o procure_a cause_n of_o our_o justification_n so_o that_o our_o faith_n and_o obedience_n be_v a_o cause_n and_o condition_n of_o life_n as_o unbelief_n and_o disobedience_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o eternal_a death_n but_o have_v former_o detect_v this_o dangerous_a error_n i_o shall_v not_o further_o insist_v upon_o the_o confutation_n of_o it_o here_o 5._o such_o preach_v a_o legal_a doctrine_n that_o render_v man_n a_o co-worker_n with_o christ_n in_o the_o salvation_n of_o their_o own_o soul_n by_o which_o mean_v there_o be_v room_n leave_v for_o he_o to_o boast_v and_o glory_n such_o a_o doctrine_n they_o preach_v who_o magnify_v the_o will_n of_o man_n or_o the_o power_n of_o the_o creature_n which_o i_o hope_v i_o have_v by_o the_o assistance_n of_o god_n sufficient_o detect_v and_o refute_v in_o this_o treatise_n all_o boast_a be_v exclude_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n man_n be_v abase_v and_o god_n alone_o exalt_v application_n i_o shall_v now_o come_v to_o make_v the_o general_a application_n of_o what_o i_o have_v say_v unto_o you_o from_o this_o great_a text_n and_o so_o conclude_v with_o all_o i_o shall_v say_v from_o it_o first_o inform._n first_o by_o way_n of_o information_n the_o doctrine_n which_o have_v in_o these_o sermon_n be_v insist_v on_o may_v inform_v we_o that_o gospel-sin_n be_v the_o great_a sin_n and_o that_o the_o blind_a heathen_n be_v not_o can_v be_v so_o guilty_a and_o culpable_a before_o god_n nor_o in_o such_o a_o dangerous_a condition_n as_o those_o be_v who_o live_v under_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o yet_o slight_a and_o neglect_v the_o salvation_n of_o it_o o_o what_o will_v they_o do_v in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n that_o live_v in_o england_n in_o london_n in_o a_o land_n and_o city_n of_o so_o great_a light_n and_o perish_v through_o their_o sin_n and_o contempt_n or_o neglect_v of_o gospel-grace_n second_o this_o may_v also_o inform_v we_o how_o strange_o mankind_n be_v blind_v and_o deceive_v by_o the_o god_n of_o this_o world_n in_o that_o small_a thing_n be_v account_v great_a and_o that_o which_o be_v of_o the_o great_a concernment_n be_v little_a or_o not_o at_o all_o regard_v but_o esteem_v as_o a_o trivial_a matter_n o_o say_v some_o we_o must_v mind_v the_o main_a chance_n they_o mean_v the_o main_a business_n in_o respect_n of_o their_o earthly_a subsistence_n which_o be_v to_o get_v bread_n and_o to_o provide_v for_o the_o body_n for_o their_o look_v after_o what_o be_v of_o such_o importance_n as_o the_o salvation_n of_o your_o precious_a and_o immortal_a soul_n and_o to_o be_v provide_v for_o a_o endless_a eternity_n three_o i_o may_v infer_v from_o hence_o that_o the_o great_a part_n of_o mankind_n be_v unbeliever_n for_o all_o that_o neglect_v this_o salvation_n and_o look_v not_o upon_o this_o matter_n as_o their_o chief_a
