goodness_n and_o righteousness_n which_o he_o suppose_v to_o be_v much_o more_o perfect_a than_o it_o be_v 2._o upon_o ignorance_n of_o the_o true_a scope_n and_o meaning_n of_o the_o law_n which_o he_o suppose_v to_o require_v no_o more_o but_o outward_a obedience_n which_o he_o have_v in_o some_o sort_n perform_v from_o his_o youth_n he_o think_v he_o have_v keep_v the_o commandment_n from_o his_o youth_n now_o although_o this_o ignorance_n and_o erroneous_a conceit_n be_v evil_a and_o discommendable_a in_o this_o young_a ruler_n yet_o here_o be_v something_o also_o good_a and_o commendable_a in_o he_o which_o be_v employ_v by_o these_o word_n viz._n his_o care_n not_o only_o to_o know_v the_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n but_o also_o to_o observe_v and_o keep_v they_o in_o some_o sort_n by_o outward_a obedience_n and_o conformity_n to_o they_o and_o that_o from_o his_o youth_n the_o word_n be_v clear_v there_o be_v two_o thing_n which_o may_v be_v consider_v in_o they_o 1._o his_o reverend_a manner_n of_o speak_v to_o our_o saviour_n call_v he_o master_n 2._o the_o matter_n of_o his_o speech_n or_o reply_n make_v to_o our_o saviour_n former_a answer_n of_o the_o first_o i_o have_v before_o speak_v of_o the_o second_o first_o i_o will_v speak_v of_o such_o instruction_n as_o may_v be_v gather_v from_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o commendable_a in_o this_o young_a man_n observe_v 1_o observe_v 1._o that_o outward_a obedience_n and_o conformity_n to_o the_o law_n and_o commandment_n of_o god_n be_v a_o good_a and_o commendable_a thing_n in_o itself_o yea_o it_o be_v necessary_a and_o require_v of_o god_n at_o our_o hand_n this_o care_n of_o outward_a conformity_n to_o the_o law_n and_o of_o refrain_v the_o outward_a breach_n of_o it_o be_v good_a and_o commendable_a in_o this_o young_a man_n our_o saviour_n do_v not_o blame_v he_o for_o it_o or_o show_v any_o dislike_n thereof_o but_o on_o the_o contrary_a immediate_o upon_o this_o profession_n make_v of_o his_o outward_a observance_n of_o the_o law_n it_o be_v say_v jesus_n look_v on_o he_o love_v he_o which_o imply_v that_o this_o conscionable_a care_n which_o be_v in_o the_o young_a man_n to_o keep_v the_o commandment_n though_o but_o outward_o be_v one_o main_a cause_n of_o our_o saviour_n love_n he_o so_o that_o outward_a obedience_n and_o conformity_n to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n in_o life_n and_o practice_n be_v not_o evil_a but_o good_a commendable_a and_o necessary_a in_o itself_o for_o all_o christian_n though_o we_o be_v not_o to_o rest_v in_o this_o outward_a obedience_n but_o above_o all_o to_o strive_v unto_o the_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a yet_o even_o the_o outward_a be_v necessary_a and_o command_v of_o god_n 1_o cor._n 6._o 20._o glorify_v god_n do_v but_o to_o reserve_v this_o for_o my_o ordinary_a exercise_n of_o catechise_n in_o the_o afternoon_n and_o the_o rather_o because_o i_o be_o very_o short_o to_o come_v unto_o this_o part_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o catechism_n in_o my_o ordinary_a course_n here_o therefore_o i_o will_v only_o observe_v some_o thing_n general_o and_o brief_o for_o our_o instruction_n from_o our_o saviour_n allege_v of_o these_o particular_a commandment_n in_o this_o place_n observe_v 1_o observe_v 1._o that_o one_o good_a way_n and_o mean_n to_o convince_v and_o discover_v formal_a hypocrite_n or_o unsound_a professor_n of_o religion_n which_o make_v a_o counterfeit_a show_n of_o religion_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o first_o table_n of_o the_o commandment_n i_o say_v one_o good_a way_n to_o convince_v such_o be_v to_o urge_v and_o press_v unto_o their_o conscience_n the_o obedience_n of_o the_o second_o table_n in_o duty_n of_o charity_n and_o justice_n towards_o man_n therefore_o our_o saviour_n thus_o deal_v here_o with_o this_o young_a ruler_n the_o better_a to_o discover_v his_o close_a hypocrisy_n he_o be_v one_o that_o make_v show_v of_o religion_n in_o outward_a duty_n of_o holiness_n and_o piety_n towards_o god_n in_o the_o first_o table_n and_o yet_o want_v the_o truth_n and_o power_n of_o religion_n in_o his_o heart_n our_o saviour_n the_o better_a to_o convince_v he_o of_o his_o close_a hypocrisy_n and_o to_o discover_v it_o to_o he_o do_v thus_o urge_v unto_o he_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o second_o table_n touch_v duty_n of_o charity_n and_o justice_n towards_o man_n to_o teach_v we_o that_o this_o be_v the_o only_a way_n to_o convince_v and_o discover_v such_o unsound_a professor_n etc._n etc._n which_o therefore_o teach_v minister_n of_o the_o cause_n to_o suspect_v of_o hypocrisy_n or_o unsoundness_n in_o the_o profession_n of_o religion_n and_o in_o performance_n of_o outward_a duty_n of_o religion_n command_v in_o the_o first_o table_n they_o be_v to_o urge_v and_o press_v such_o with_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o second_o table_n in_o duty_n of_o charity_n mercy_n and_o just_a deal_n towards_o man_n this_o be_v a_o ready_a way_n and_o mean_n to_o convince_v and_o humble_v they_o for_o their_o hypocrisy_n and_o unsoundness_n in_o duty_n of_o piety_n and_o religion_n require_v in_o the_o first_o table_n and_o this_o also_o may_v teach_v every_o professor_n of_o religion_n that_o be_v forward_o in_o duty_n of_o the_o first_o table_n how_o to_o try_v his_o own_o sincerity_n in_o those_o duty_n let_v he_o examine_v his_o heart_n and_o life_n what_o conscience_n he_o make_v of_o duty_n of_o the_o second_o table_n if_o none_o at_o all_o but_o do_v live_v in_o know_a sin_n against_o the_o second_o table_n of_o the_o commandment_n as_o in_o malice_n envy_n unjustice_n fraud_n oppression_n etc._n etc._n it_o be_v a_o evident_a argument_n that_o his_o heart_n be_v not_o upright_o in_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o first_o life_n to_o come_v and_o so_o upon_o this_o place_n they_o will_v ground_v their_o erroneous_a doctrine_n touch_v the_o distinction_n of_o legal_a precept_n from_o evangelical_n counsel_n of_o perfection_n as_o they_o call_v they_o hold_v this_o that_o beside_o the_o general_a precept_n or_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n which_o bound_v all_o man_n there_o be_v also_o certain_a special_a counsel_n of_o perfection_n give_v in_o the_o gospel_n which_o be_v above_o and_o beyond_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o law_n and_o do_v not_o bind_v all_o man_n but_o such_o only_a as_o can_v and_o will_v put_v they_o in_o practice_n etc._n etc._n such_o a_o counsel_n of_o perfection_n they_o say_v this_o be_v see_v the_o rhemist_n but_o this_o erroneous_a conceit_n of_o they_o be_v easy_o consume_v for_o 1._o the_o very_a word_n of_o the_o text_n show_v it_o to_o be_v a_o flat_a and_o absolute_a precept_n in_o that_o it_o run_v in_o manner_n of_o a_o precept_n of_o commandment_n and_o not_o of_o advice_n or_o counsel_n go_v thy_o way_n sell_v whatsoever_o thou_o have_v and_o give_v to_o the_o poor_a 2._o if_o these_o word_n do_v contain_v a_o counsel_n of_o perfection_n and_o not_o a_o commandment_n than_o our_o saviour_n shall_v here_o contradict_v that_o which_o before_o he_o have_v say_v to_o this_o young_a man_n for_o be_v demand_v by_o he_o what_o he_o must_v do_v for_o the_o obtain_n of_o eternal_a life_n he_o require_v of_o he_o nothing_o else_o but_o flat_a obedience_n to_o the_o law_n if_o therefore_o he_o shall_v now_o give_v he_o a_o counsel_n of_o perfection_n poor_a though_o they_o have_v great_a estate_n in_o the_o world_n give_v they_o to_o this_o very_a end_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v the_o more_o liberal_a and_o helpful_a to_o their_o poor_a brethren_n and_o neighbour_n yet_o be_v not_o forward_o this_o way_n at_o least_o nothing_o so_o forward_o as_o they_o shall_v be_v but_o backward_o and_o unwilling_a to_o give_v unto_o this_o use_n and_o what_o they_o give_v it_o be_v with_o grudge_a and_o repine_v how_o unthankful_a be_v these_o unto_o god_n who_o have_v receive_v all_o they_o have_v from_o god_n yet_o be_v loath_a to_o give_v a_o little_a part_n of_o their_o wealth_n to_o he_o again_o by_o distribute_v it_o to_o the_o relief_n of_o their_o poor_a brethren_n use_v 2_o use_v 2._o see_v the_o great_a sin_n of_o those_o who_o instead_o of_o employ_v their_o wealth_n to_o this_o religious_a end_n that_o be_v to_o the_o relief_n of_o their_o poor_a brethren_n do_v employ_v it_o rather_o to_o evil_a and_o sinful_a use_n some_o consume_v their_o wealth_n upon_o their_o lust_n spend_v it_o in_o riotous_a course_n as_o game_n drink_v company-keeping_a etc._n etc._n whereby_o they_o disable_v themselves_o from_o give_v to_o the_o poor_a some_o spend_v their_o substance_n in_o follow_v suit_n in_o law_n against_o their_o neighbour_n and_o some_o bestow_v so_o much_o upon_o costly_a apparel_n above_o their_o degree_n and_o upon_o rich_a fare_n that_o they_o can_v give_v so_o much_o to_o the_o relief_n of_o the_o poor_a as_o they_o may_v and_o shall_v like_o the_o rich_a glutton_n luke_n 16._o who_o be_v clothe_v in_o purple_a etc._n etc._n and_o fare_v delicate_o every_o day_n but_o be_v not_o careful_a to_o relieve_v poor_a lazarus_n great_a be_v the_o sin_n of_o such_o instead_o of_o honour_v god_n with_o their_o wealth_n they_o dishonour_v he_o use_v 3_o use_v 3_o to_o stir_v up_o such_o as_o have_v this_o world_n good_n to_o employ_v they_o to_o this_o special_a and_o excellent_a use_n among_o other_o even_o to_o the_o relief_n of_o their_o poor_a brethren_n who_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o their_o help_n remeâ—bring_v that_o this_o be_v one_o special_a end_n for_o which_o their_o wealth_n be_v give_v they_o not_o that_o they_o shall_v spend_v it_o upon_o themselves_o only_o or_o hoard_v it_o up_o unprofitable_o but_o to_o relieve_v and_o succour_v such_o as_o be_v in_o want_n where_o the_o common_a people_n may_v come_v which_o be_v call_v the_o temple_n because_o it_o do_v belong_v to_o the_o temple_n and_o it_o be_v also_o sometime_o call_v solomon_n porch_n act._n 3._o 11._o all_o the_o people_n run_v together_o in_o the_o porch_n that_o be_v call_v solomon_n in_o this_o also_o our_o saviour_n use_v to_o walk_v and_o to_o teach_v the_o people_n there_o joh._n 10._o to_o exchange_v money_n great_a for_o small_a gold_n for_o silver_n jewish_a coin_n for_o money_n of_o other_o country_n for_o there_o come_v not_o only_a jew_n but_o proselyte_n also_o from_o other_o
