that_o have_v get_v but_o a_o notion_n of_o the_o law_n a_o notion_n that_o be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o it_o in_o the_o head_n so_o as_o to_o discourse_v and_o talk_v of_o it_o if_o he_o have_v not_o feel_v the_o power_n of_o it_o and_o that_o effectual_o too_o he_o it_o be_v to_o be_v fear_v will_v at_o the_o best_a be_v but_o a_o notione_v in_o the_o gospel_n he_o will_v not_o have_v the_o experimental_a knowledge_n of_o the_o same_o in_o his_o heart_n nay_o he_o will_v not_o seek_v nor_o hearty_o desire_v after_o it_o and_o all_o because_o as_o i_o say_v before_o he_o have_v not_o experience_n of_o the_o wound_a cut_a kill_a nature_n of_o the_o other_o i_o say_v therefore_o if_o thou_o will_v know_v the_o authority_n and_o power_n of_o the_o gospel_n labour_n first_o to_o there_o be_v other_o that_o say_v because_o we_o do_v preach_v the_o free_a full_a and_o exceed_a grace_n discover_v in_o the_o gospel_n therefore_o we_o make_v void_a the_o law_n which_o indeed_o the_o law_n out_o of_o its_o place_n and_o that_o because_o they_o be_v ignorant_a not_o know_v what_o they_o say_v nor_o whereof_o they_o affirm_v and_o let_v i_o tell_v you_o if_o a_o man_n be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o bound_n and_o boundlesness_n of_o the_o gospel_n though_o he_o speak_v and_o make_v mention_n of_o the_o name_n of_o the_o father_n and_o of_o the_o son_n and_o also_o of_o the_o name_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n and_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n yet_o at_o this_o very_a time_n and_o in_o these_o very_a word_n he_o will_v preach_v nothing_o but_o the_o law_n and_o that_o as_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n reader_n i_o must_v confess_v it_o be_v a_o wonderful_a mysterious_a thing_n and_o he_o have_v need_n have_v a_o wise_a spirit_n than_o his_o own_o that_o can_v right_o set_v these_o two_o covenant_n in_o their_o right_a place_n that_o when_o he_o speak_v of_o the_o one_o he_o do_v not_o justle_v the_o other_o out_o of_o its_o place_n o_o to_o be_v so_o well_o enlighten_v as_o to_o speak_v of_o the_o one_o that_o be_v the_o law_n for_o to_o magnify_v the_o gospel_n and_o also_o to_o speak_v of_o the_o gospel_n so_o as_o to_o establish_v and_o yet_o not_o to_o idolise_v the_o law_n nor_o any_o particular_a thereof_o it_o be_v rare_a and_o to_o be_v hear_v and_o find_v but_o in_o very_a few_o man_n breast_n if_o thou_o shall_v say_v what_o be_v it_o to_o speak_v to_o each_o of_o these_o two_o covenant_n so_o as_o to_o set_v they_o in_o their_o right_a place_n and_o also_o to_o use_v the_o terror_n of_o the_o one_o will_v have_v thou_o to_o do_v at_o the_o read_n hereof_o make_v a_o pause_n and_o sit_v still_o one_o quarter_n of_o a_o hour_n and_o muse_v a_o little_a in_o thy_o mind_n thus_o with_o thyself_o methinks_v the_o prisoner_n at_o the_o bar_n have_v offend_v the_o law_n and_o the_o charge_n of_o a_o just_a judge_n towards_o they_o do_v much_o hold_v forth_o the_o law_n as_o it_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o how_o it_o deal_v with_o they_o that_o be_v under_o it_o the_o prisoner_n have_v offend_v cry_v out_o for_o mercy_n good_a my_o lord_n mercy_n say_v he_o pray_v my_o lord_n pity_v i_o the_o judge_n say_v what_o can_v thou_o say_v for_o thyself_o that_o sentence_n of_o death_n shall_v not_o be_v pass_v upon_o thou_o why_o nothing_o but_o this_o i_o pray_v my_o lord_n be_v merciful_a but_o he_o answer_v again_o friend_n the_o law_n must_v take_v place_n the_o law_n must_v not_o be_v break_v the_o prisoner_n say_v good_a my_o lord_n spare_v i_o and_o i_o manifest_v the_o love_n of_o the_o judge_n not_o the_o love_n of_o the_o law_n i_o beseech_v you_o to_o mark_v this_o distinction_n for_o if_o a_o man_n that_o have_v deserve_v death_n by_o the_o law_n be_v notwithstanding_o this_o forgive_v his_o offence_n it_o be_v not_o because_o the_o law_n say_v spare_v he_o but_o it_o be_v the_o love_n of_o the_o judge_n or_o chief_a magistrate_n that_o do_v set_v the_o man_n free_a from_o the_o condemnation_n of_o the_o law_n but_o mark_v here_o the_o law_n of_o man_n and_o the_o law_n of_o god_n do_v differ_v the_o law_n of_o man_n be_v not_o so_o irrevokable_a but_o if_o the_o supreme_a please_v he_o may_v sometime_o grant_v a_o pardon_n without_o satisfaction_n give_v for_o the_o offence_n but_o the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v of_o this_o nature_n that_o if_o the_o man_n be_v find_v under_o it_o and_o a_o transgrssor_n or_o one_o that_o have_v transgress_v against_o it_o before_o that_o prisoner_n can_v be_v release_v there_o must_v be_v a_o full_a and_o complete_a satisfaction_n give_v to_o it_o either_o by_o the_o man_n own_o life_n or_o by_o the_o blood_n of_o some_o other_o man_n for_o without_o shed_v of_o blood_n there_o be_v no_o remission_n heb._n 9_o 22._o that_o be_v there_o be_v no_o deliverance_n from_o under_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o however_o the_o law_n of_o man_n may_v be_v make_v of_o none_o effect_n sometime_o by_o show_v mercy_n without_o give_v of_o a_o full_a satisfaction_n yet_o the_o law_n of_o god_n can_v be_v so_o content_v nor_o at_o the_o least_o give_v way_n that_o the_o person_n offend_v that_o shall_v escape_v the_o curse_n and_o not_o be_v damn_v except_o some_o one_o do_v give_v a_o full_a and_o complete_a satisfaction_n to_o it_o for_o he_o and_o bring_v the_o prisoner_n into_o another_o covenant_n to_o wit_n the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n which_o be_v more_o easy_a and_o soul-refreshing_a and_o sin-pardoning_a i_o say_v therefore_o you_o must_v understand_v that_o if_o there_o be_v a_o law_n make_v that_o reach_v the_o life_n to_o take_v it_o away_o for_o the_o 〈◊〉_d give_v by_o the_o offender_n against_o it_o than_o it_o be_v clear_a that_o if_o the_o man_n be_v spare_v and_o save_v it_o be_v not_o the_o law_n that_o do_v give_v the_o man_n this_o advantage_n but_o it_o be_v the_o mere_a mercy_n of_o the_o king_n either_o man_n for_o it_o call_v for_o no_o loss_n for_o to_o ransom_v thou_o from_o the_o curse_n of_o it_o be_v due_a to_o thou_o for_o thy_o transgression_n and_o to_o satisfy_v the_o cry_n the_o doleful_a cry_n thereof_o and_o ever_o for_o to_o present_v thou_o pure_a and_o spotless_a before_o god_n notwithstanding_o this_o fiery_a law_n thou_o be_v go_v if_o thou_o have_v a_o thousand_o soul_n for_o god_n set_v the_o case_n thou_o can_v fulfil_v the_o whole_a law_n and_o live_v from_o this_o day_n to_o thy_o life_n end_v without_o sin_v in_o thought_n word_n or_o deed_n which_o be_v unpossible_a but_o i_o say_v set_v the_o case_n it_o shall_v be_v so_o why_o thy_o state_n be_v as_o bad_a if_o thou_o be_v under_o the_o first_o covenant_n as_o ever_o it_o be_v for_o first_o i_o know_v thou_o dare_v not_o say_v but_o thou_o have_v at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o sin_v and_o it_o so_o than_o the_o law_n have_v condemn_v thou_o and_o it_o so_o than_o i_o be_o sure_a that_o thou_o with_o all_o thy_o action_n and_o work_n of_o righteousness_n can_v not_o remove_v the_o dreadful_a and_o unresistible_a curse_n that_o be_v already_o lay_v upon_o thou_o by_o that_o law_n which_o thou_o be_v under_o and_o which_o thou_o have_v sin_v against_o though_o thou_o live_v the_o holy_a life_n that_o any_o man_n can_v live_v in_o this_o world_n be_v under_o the_o law_n of_o work_n and_o so_o not_o under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n thou_o must_v be_v cut_v off_o without_o remedy_n for_o thou_o have_v sin_v though_o afterward_o thou_o live_v never_o so_o well_o the_o reason_n for_o this_o that_o have_v be_v speak_v be_v these_o first_o though_o nature_n of_o god_n justice_n call_v for_o it_o that_o be_v it_o call_v for_o irrecoverable_a ruin_n on_o they_o that_o transgress_v against_o ruin_n to_o be_v pour_v out_o on_o those_o that_o shall_v live_v and_o die_v under_o this_o covenant_n if_o thou_o have_v sin_v but_o one_o sin_n against_o this_o covenant_n and_o shall_v afterward_o escape_v damn_v god_n must_v be_v unfaithful_a to_o himself_o and_o to_o his_o word_n which_o both_o agree_v as_o one_o first_o he_o will_v be_v unfaithful_a to_o himself_o to_o himself_o that_o be_v to_o his_o justice_n holiness_n righteousness_n wisdom_n and_o power_n if_o he_o shall_v offer_v to_o stop_v the_o run_n out_o of_o his_o justice_n for_o the_o damn_v of_o they_o that_o have_v offend_v it_o and_o second_o he_o will_v be_v unfaithful_a to_o his_o word_n his_o write_a word_n and_o deny_v disown_n and_o break_v that_o of_o which_o he_o have_v say_v luk._n 16._o 7._o it_o be_v easy_a for_o heaven_n and_o earth_n to_o pass_v away_o than_o for_o one_o tittle_n of_o the_o law_n to_o fail_v or_o be_v make_v of_o none_o effect_n now_o if_o he_o shall_v not_o according_a to_o party_n offend_v second_o because_o thou_o be_v not_o as_o infinite_a as_o god_n but_o a_o poor_a create_a weed_n that_o be_v here_o to_o day_n and_o go_v to_o morrow_n and_o not_o able_a to_o answer_v god_n in_o his_o essence_n be_v and_o attribute_n thou_o be_v find_v to_o fall_v under_o he_o for_o that_o thy_o soul_n or_o body_n can_v do_v nothing_o that_o be_v infinite_a in_o such_o a_o and_o do_v still_o to_o this_o day_n as_o they_o come_v from_o he_o both_o natural_a and_o eternal_a death_n rom._n the_o 5._o it_o may_v be_v drunkard_n swearer_n liar_n thief_n thou_o do_v not_o a_o similitude_n for_o the_o clear_n of_o it_o set_v the_o case_n that_o i_o give_v to_o my_o servant_n ten_o pound_n with_o this_o charge_n lay_v it_o out_o for_o my_o best_a advantage_n that_o i_o and_o the_o law_n o_o how_o will_v god_n advance_v his_o justice_n o_o how_o will_v god_n advance_v his_o holiness_n first_o by_o show_v man_n that_o he_o in_o justice_n can_v will_v not_o regard_v they_o because_o they_o have_v sin_v and_o second_o in_o that_o his_o holiness_n will_v not_o give_v way_n for_o such_o unclean_a wretch_n to_o abide_v in_o his_o sight_n his_o eye_n be_v so_o pure_a second_o because_o god_n will_v make_v it_o appear_v that_o he_o will_v be_v as_o good_a as_o his_o word_n to_o sinner_n sinner_n must_v not_o look_v to_o escape_v always_o though_o they_o may_v unrighteous_a or_o lawless_a and_o disobedient_a for_o the_o ungodly_a and_o for_o sinner_n for_o unholy_a and_o profane_a for_o murderer_n of_o father_n and_o murderer_n of_o mother_n for_o man-slayer_n for_o whore-monger_n for_o they_o that_o defile_v themselves_o with_o mankind_n for_o men-stealer_n liar_n look_v to_o it_o liar_n for_o perjure_a person_n and_o in_o a_o word_n if_o there_o be_v any_o other_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o according_a to_o sound_a doctrine_n these_o be_v one_o sort_n of_o people_n that_o be_v under_o the_o law_n and_o so_o under_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o same_o who_o due_a be_v to_o drink_v up_o the_o brimful_a cup_n of_o god_n eternal_a vengeance_n and_o therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o not_o to_o deceive_v yourselves_o for_o know_v you_o not_o that_o the_o unrighteous_a shall_v not_o inherit_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n neither_o fornicator_n nor_o idolator_n nor_o adulterer_n nor_o effeminate_v nor_o abuser_n of_o themselves_o with_o administration_n of_o death_n and_o destruction_n as_o you_o have_v it_o 2_o cor._n the_o 3._o chap._n the_o 7_o 9_o verse_n and_o all_o those_o every_o one_o of_o they_o that_o be_v open_a profane_a and_o scandalous_a wretch_n be_v under_o it_o and_o have_v be_v so_o ever_o since_o they_o come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o this_o day_n and_o they_o will_v for_o certain_a live_v and_o die_v under_o the_o same_o dispensation_n and_o then_o be_v damn_v to_o all_o eternity_n if_o they_o be_v not_o convert_v from_o under_o that_o covenant_n into_o and_o under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n of_o which_o i_o shall_v speak_v in_o its_o place_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o how_o brag_n and_o crank_a be_v our_o poor_a wanton_n and_o wicked_a one_o in_o this_o day_n of_o forbearance_n as_o if_o god_n will_v never_o have_v a_o reckon_n with_o they_o as_o if_o there_o be_v no_o law_n to_o condemn_v they_o as_o if_o there_o be_v no_o hell_n fire_n to_o put_v they_o into_o but_o oh_o how_o will_v they_o be_v deceive_v when_o they_o shall_v see_v christ_n sit_v upon_o the_o judgment-seat_n have_v lay_v aside_o his_o priestly_a and_o prophetical_a office_n and_o appear_v only_o as_o a_o judge_n to_o the_o wicked_a when_o they_o shall_v see_v all_o the_o record_n of_o heaven_n unfold_v and_o lay_v open_a when_o they_o shall_v see_v each_o man_n his_o name_n out_o of_o the_o book_n of_o life_n and_o in_o the_o book_n of_o the_o law_n when_o they_o shall_v see_v god_n in_o his_o majesty_n christ_n in_o his_o majesty_n the_o saint_n in_o their_o dignity_n but_o themselves_o in_o their_o impurity_n what_o will_v they_o say_v then_o whither_o will_v they_o fliethen_a where_o will_v they_o leave_v their_o glory_n isa_n 10._o 3._o o_o sad_a state_n second_o they_o be_v under_o the_o law_n also_o who_o do_v not_o only_o so_o break_v and_o disobey_v the_o law_n but_o follow_v after_o the_o law_n as_o hard_o as_o ever_o they_o can_v seek_v justification_n thereby_o that_o be_v though_o a_o man_n shall_v abstain_v from_o the_o sin_n against_o the_o law_n and_o labour_n to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n and_o give_v up_o himself_o to_o the_o law_n yet_o if_o he_o look_v no_o further_o than_o the_o law_n he_o be_v still_o under_o the_o law_n and_o for_o all_o his_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n the_o righteous_a law_n of_o god_n he_o shall_v be_v destroy_v by_o that_o law._n friend_n you_o must_v not_o understand_v that_o none_o but_o profane_a person_n be_v under_o the_o law_n no_o but_o you_o must_v understand_v that_o a_o man_n may_v be_v turn_v from_o a_o prove_v it_o to_o be_v true_a read_v with_o understand_v that_o scripture_n in_o roman_n 9_o at_o the_o 30_o 31._o verse_n where_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o the_o very_a same_o thing_n say_v but_o israel_n which_o follow_v after_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n mark_v that_o follow_v after_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n they_o notwithstanding_o their_o earnest_a pursuit_n or_o hunt_v after_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n fall_v short_a of_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n it_o signify_v thus_o much_o to_o we_o that_o let_v a_o man_n be_v never_o so_o earnest_a so_o servant_n so_o restless_a so_o serious_a so_o ready_a so_o apt_a and_o willing_a to_o follow_v the_o law_n and_o the_o righteousness_n thereof_o if_o he_o be_v under_o that_o covenant_n he_o be_v go_v he_o be_v lose_v he_o be_v deprive_v of_o eternal_a life_n because_o he_o be_v not_o under_o the_o ministration_n of_o life_n if_o he_o die_v there_o read_v also_o that_o
christ_n alone_o but_o with_o believer_n also_o i_o will_v make_v a_o new_a covenant_n with_o the_o house_n of_o israel_n and_o judah_n etc._n etc._n 1._o answ._n first_o it_o can_v be_v mean_v that_o the_o new_a covenant_n be_v make_v with_o christ_n and_o the_o house_n of_o israel_n and_o judah_n as_o the_o undertaker_n thereof_o for_o so_o it_o be_v make_v with_o christ_n alone_o which_o be_v clear_a in_o that_o it_o be_v make_v long_o before_o the_o house_n of_o israel_n and_o judah_n have_v a_o be_v as_o i_o show_v before_o 2._o answ._n but_o second_o these_o word_n here_o be_v speak_v first_o to_o show_v rather_o the_o end_n of_o the_o ceremony_n than_o the_o beginning_n or_o rise_v or_o the_o new_a covenant_n mind_v a_o little_a the_o apostle_n be_v labour_v to_o beat_v the_o jew_n to_o who_o he_o write_v this_o epistle_n off_o of_o the_o ceremony_n of_o the_o law_n of_o the_o priest_n altar_n offering_n temple_n etc._n etc._n and_o to_o bring_v they_o to_o the_o right_a understanding_n of_o the_o thing_n and_o thing_n that_o they_o hold_v forth_o which_o be_v to_o come_v and_o to_o put_v a_o end_n to_o those_o if_o you_o do_v but_o understand_v the_o epistle_n to_o the_o hebrew_n it_o be_v a_o discourse_n that_o show_v that_o the_o son_n of_o god_n be_v come_v there_o be_v a_o end_n put_v to_o the_o ceremony_n for_o they_o be_v to_o continue_v so_o long_o and_o no_o long_o it_o say_v the_o apostle_n stand_v in_o meat_n and_o drink_n and_o divers_a wash_n and_o carnal_a ordinance_n impose_v on_o they_o until_o the_o time_n of_o reformation_n that_o be_v god_n the_o father_n have_v give_v for_o a_o ransom_n by_o covenant_n for_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o also_o to_o manifest_v the_o truth_n of_o that_o covenant_n which_o be_v make_v between_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n before_o the_o world_n begin_v for_o though_o the_o new_a covenant_n be_v make_v before_o the_o world_n begin_v and_o also_o every_o one_o in_o all_o age_n be_v save_v by_o the_o virtue_n of_o that_o covenant_n yet_o that_o covenant_n be_v never_o so_o clear_o make_v manifest_a as_o at_o the_o come_n death_n and_o resurrection_n of_o christ_n and_o therefore_o say_v the_o scripture_n he_o have_v bring_v life_n and_o immortality_n to_o light_v through_o the_o gospel_n 2_o tim._n 1._o 9_o 10._o who_o have_v save_v we_o and_o call_v we_o with_o a_o holy_a call_n not_o according_a to_o the_o work_n of_o righteousness_n which_o we_o have_v do_v but_o according_a to_o his_o own_o purpose_n and_o grace_n which_o be_v give_v we_o in_o christ_n
