we_o what_o man_v nature_n ought_v to_o be_v and_o to_o what_o end_v it_o be_v create_v and_o how_o much_o it_o be_v fall_v away_o from_o that_o perfection_n wherein_o it_o be_v first_o create_v and_o how_o far_o of_o it_o be_v from_o the_o will_n of_o god_n to_o the_o which_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v agreeable_a and_o to_o answer_v and_o serve_v to_o that_o end_n for_o the_o which_o it_o be_v create_v of_o god_n on_o the_o other_o side_n he_o do_v plain_o give_v we_o to_o understand_v by_o that_o same_o mean_a of_o the_o salvation_n which_o he_o have_v prepare_v for_o we_o in_o jesus_n only_o to_o condemn_v man_n as_o in_o deed_n it_o shall_v have_v come_v to_o pass_v if_o he_o have_v not_o ordain_v a_o other_o mean_a for_o their_o salvation_n how_o that_o the_o law_n of_o god_n contain_v much_o more_o in_o substance_n than_o the_o word_n seem_v to_o signify_v at_o the_o first_o sight_n and_o how_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v understand_v according_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o law_n maker_n t._n it_o must_v needs_o be_v then_o that_o the_o word_n contain_v therein_o do_v import_n and_o declare_v much_o more_o than_o they_o seem_v to_o show_v at_o the_o first_o d._n they_o do_v contain_v as_o much_o as_o i_o have_v say_v t._n there_o be_v then_o many_o which_o do_v not_o know_v nor_o understand_v they_o so_o well_o as_o they_o think_v that_o they_o do_v d._n but_o i_o think_v for_o my_o part_n that_o there_o be_v none_o other_o but_o such_o as_o thou_o speak_v of_o for_o they_o that_o may_v well_o understand_v and_o know_v they_o may_v also_o understand_v and_o know_v all_o the_o write_n of_o the_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n the_o matter_n that_o be_v speak_v of_o in_o the_o law_n may_v not_o be_v measure_v according_a to_o the_o shortness_n of_o the_o word_n by_o the_o which_o it_o be_v set_v forth_o and_o declare_v but_o according_a to_o the_o substance_n that_o be_v therein_o contain_v and_o the_o nature_n and_o majesty_n of_o he_o that_o speak_v and_o set_v forth_o the_o thing_n for_o see_v that_o it_o be_v god_n we_o may_v well_o know_v that_o his_o speech_n and_o phrase_n be_v frame_v in_o a_o marvelous_a high_a knowledge_n and_o wisdom_n and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o word_n nor_o syllable_n but_o that_o it_o be_v of_o great_a weight_n and_o effect_n and_o do_v import_v very_o much_o and_o further_o see_v that_o god_n be_v a_o spirit_n and_o a_o spiritual_a and_o eternal_a essence_n without_o beginning_n and_o end_v and_o will_v be_v serve_v in_o spirit_n and_o in_o verity_n with_o such_o service_n as_o be_v agreeable_a with_o his_o nature_n and_o majesty_n we_o may_v then_o well_o know_v that_o there_o be_v great_a difference_n between_o the_o nature_n of_o his_o law_n which_o be_v divine_a &_o that_o of_o man_n law_n and_o that_o he_o be_v not_o content_v to_o have_v it_o in_o such_o sort_n observe_v as_o man_n be_v content_v to_o have_v they_o observe_v of_o the_o difference_n that_o be_v between_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o the_o law_n of_o man_n and_o the_o thing_n require_v in_o these_o same_o and_o of_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n and_o the_o judgement_n of_o man_n concern_v the_o same_o t._n show_v i_o then_o what_o be_v the_o difference_n d._n man_n be_v content_v if_o that_o by_o outward_a work_n their_o commandment_n be_v observe_v and_o that_o there_o appear_v unto_o they_o nothing_o to_o be_v do_v against_o they_o but_o they_o can_v not_o deal_v with_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o affection_n and_o thought_n because_o they_o be_v unknown_a to_o they_o save_v in_o as_o much_o as_o they_o be_v declare_v outward_o on_o the_o other_o side_n albeit_o that_o they_o be_v declare_v outward_o yet_o notwithstanding_o they_o do_v not_o condemn_v they_o and_o punish_v they_o continual_o nor_o many_o outward_a work_n also_o although_o they_o be_v very_o wicked_a t._n how_o may_v that_o be_v d._n as_o well_o because_o that_o man_n for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v content_v to_o entertain_v the_o society_n of_o man_n in_o a_o certain_a worldly_a peace_n and_o tranquillity_n as_o also_o that_o they_o think_v not_o oftentimes_o that_o to_o be_v evil_n which_o be_v evil_a or_o if_o they_o esteem_v it_o to_o be_v evil_n they_o think_v it_o not_o to_o be_v so_o great_a as_o it_o be_v or_o if_o they_o think_v it_o to_o be_v great_a they_o do_v that_o which_o concern_v the_o honour_n of_o god_n as_o for_o that_o which_o concern_v his_o own_o body_n it_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o man_n do_v rather_o punish_v yea_o and_o that_o more_o gréevouse_o those_o fault_n which_o touch_v their_o honour_n or_o dishonour_n or_o their_o profit_n or_o hindrance_n than_o they_o do_v those_o which_o make_v war_n direct_o against_o the_o honour_n and_o majesty_n of_o god_n but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o god_n for_o he_o be_v not_o content_v with_o the_o only_a work_n that_o appear_v outward_o but_o he_o require_v the_o heart_n and_o behold_v the_o fountain_n from_o whence_o the_o work_v spring_v which_o can_v not_o please_v he_o how_o fair_a a_o show_n so_o ever_o it_o have_v but_o only_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o it_o proceed_v from_o the_o heart_n and_o that_o the_o heart_n do_v please_v he_o the_o which_o in_o deed_n can_v in_o no_o wise_a please_v he_o but_o so_o farforth_o as_o he_o do_v draw_v near_o to_o his_o nature_n and_o that_o he_o be_v reform_v and_o make_v new_a like_o to_o his_o image_n and_o regenerate_v by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n for_o there_o be_v no_o work_n good_a nor_o pleasant_a to_o god_n but_o for_o when_o god_n do_v require_v of_o we_o a_o thing_n that_o seem_v to_o belong_v to_o the_o outward_n work_n we_o ought_v to_o understand_v the_o whole_a by_o a_o part_n and_o the_o cause_n by_o the_o effect_n and_o the_o root_n and_o the_o whole_a herb_n by_o the_o fruit_n and_o the_o workman_n by_o the_o work_n and_o all_o the_o circumstance_n and_o dependence_n of_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o note_n and_o when_o he_o forbid_v a_o thing_n we_o must_v also_o know_v that_o he_o command_v his_o contrary_n and_o likewise_o when_o he_o command_v he_o forbid_v the_o contrary_a of_o that_o which_o he_o command_v for_o he_o behold_v man_n thorough_o both_o endlong_a and_o overthwart_o and_o do_v sound_v the_o heart_n and_o all_o the_o thought_n and_o affection_n of_o he_o and_o allow_v nothing_o in_o he_o but_o that_o which_o he_o find_v to_o be_v he_o and_o have_v himself_o command_v and_o disallow_v nothing_o but_o that_o which_o man_n have_v receive_v of_o other_o than_o of_o which_o he_o have_v of_o his_o own_o put_v into_o he_o and_o what_o man_n have_v of_o other_o to_o destroy_v his_o work_n we_o must_v therefore_o note_v here_o that_o there_o be_v in_o we_o four_o thing_n that_o can_v not_o please_v god_n and_o every_o of_o they_o do_v in_o his_o behalf_n deserve_v death_n and_o eternal_a damnation_n now_o if_o any_o one_o of_o they_o be_v take_v apart_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o separate_v they_o the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o be_v so_o abominable_a of_o his_o own_o nature_n and_o worthy_a of_o so_o grievous_a punyshement_fw-mi what_o may_v it_o then_o be_v when_o they_o be_v all_o join_v together_o t._n there_o must_v needs_o be_v much_o filthiness_n but_o which_o be_v these_o thing_n man._n d._n first_o there_o be_v concupiscence_n for_o the_o second_o the_o affection_n beget_v of_o he_o for_o the_o three_o the_o consent_n of_o the_o will_n to_o this_o affection_n for_o the_o four_o the_o execution_n of_o the_o same_o by_o deed_n better_a understanding_n of_o the_o other_o thing_n that_o do_v go_v before_o which_o be_v more_o hide_v and_o more_o secret_a in_o this_o point_n i_o will_v begin_v by_o the_o most_o apparent_a and_o open_a fruit_n whereby_o we_o easy_o judge_v of_o the_o nature_n of_o all_o tree_n for_o in_o set_v forth_o first_o the_o work_n the_o workman_n shall_v not_o only_o be_v know_v thereby_o but_o also_o the_o forge_n and_o shop_n wherein_o that_o work_n have_v be_v wrought_v as_o concern_v the_o work_n we_o ought_v to_o consider_v it_o first_o two_o way_n the_o one_o as_o command_v of_o god_n the_o gospel_n and_o the_o grace_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n promise_v in_o the_o same_o p._n that_o notwithstanding_o this_o faith_n in_o the_o gospel_n be_v the_o principal_a point_n that_o be_v require_v in_o true_a repentance_n for_o albeit_o that_o a_o man_n have_v faith_n in_o all_o that_o which_o the_o law_n declare_v so_o it_o be_v that_o this_o faith_n can_v not_o let_v he_o to_o despair_v as_o judas_n do_v if_o he_o pass_v not_o further_o to_o the_o gospel_n but_o such_o a_o faith_n shall_v cause_v he_o to_o despair_v the_o more_o m._n how_o may_v that_o be_v p._n forsomuch_o as_o such_o a_o faith_n be_v not_o full_a in_o as_o much_o as_o she_o leave_v the_o principal_a whereupon_o the_o true_a faith_n be_v found_v to_o wit_n the_o promise_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_o in_o jesus_n chryst_n of_o the_o true_a and_o false_a faith_n and_o repentance_n m._n what_o do_v thou_o then_o propre_o call_v true_a faith_n p._n a_o certain_a assurance_n found_v in_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n by_o the_o which_o man_n hold_v himself_o assure_v of_o god_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o by_o jesus_n chryst_n m._n why_o say_v thou_o that_o the_o faith_n which_o have_v not_o this_o assurance_n lead_v the_o man_n which_o regard_v but_o only_o the_o law_n rather_o to_o despair_v than_o to_o hope_n of_o salvation_n p._n for_o because_o that_o so_o much_o the_o more_o man_n be_v assure_v that_o god_n be_v author_n of_o his_o law_n and_o that_o that_o which_o it_o contain_v be_v true_a even_o so_o much_o the_o more_o be_v he_o afraid_a of_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n and_o can_v not_o find_v rest_n in_o his_o conscience_n because_o there_o be_v nothing_o without_o jesus_n christ_n wherein_o to_o be_v assure_v against_o the_o wrath_n of_o god._n m._n there_o be_v then_o by_o this_o reckon_v two_o sort_n of_o penitence_n to_o wit_n one_o true_a &_o a_o other_o false_a p._n even_o as_o also_o there_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o faith_n for_o even_o as_o they_o have_v not_o full_a faith_n which_o believe_v not_o all_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o chief_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n even_o so_o have_v they_o no_o true_a repentance_n which_o join_v not_o together_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_o with_o his_o mercy_n nor_o the_o mercy_n with_o the_o wrath_n m._n even_o as_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o apprehend_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n without_o his_o mercy_n to_o have_v true_a repentance_n be_v it_o also_o no_o more_o sufficient_a to_o apprehend_v his_o mercy_n without_o his_o wrath_n p._n thou_o may_v easy_o understand_v that_o none_o may_v well_o apprehend_v his_o mercy_n if_o first_o he_o do_v not_o apprehend_v his_o wrath_n for_o he_o that_o know_v not_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n against_o sin_n can_v tell_v nor_o understand_v how_o much_o he_o need_v his_o mercy_n and_o what_o mercy_n he_o show_v he_o when_o he_o receive_v he_o to_o mercy_n math._n thou_o say_v well_o peter_n moreover_o even_o as_o they_o fall_v to_o despair_v which_o conceive_v only_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n without_o his_o mercy_n even_o so_o those_o which_o consider_v only_o his_o mercy_n without_o have_v first_o conceive_v what_o his_o wrath_n be_v do_v not_o esteem_v sin_n to_o be_v such_o as_o they_o ought_v to_o esteem_v it_o and_o in_o like_a case_n can_v never_o understand_v what_o mercy_n be_v nor_o how_o great_a the_o goodness_n of_o god_n be_v toward_o they_o m._n i_o note_v well_o all_o these_o point_n that_o the_o very_a wicked_a and_o reprobate_a may_v well_o attain_v to_o such_o a_o faith_n and_o repentance_n as_o be_v in_o judas_n but_o they_o have_v not_o at_o all_o the_o true_a faith_n and_o repentance_n by_o the_o which_o the_o true_a child_n of_o god_n do_v obtain_v forgiveness_n of_o their_o sin_n p._n thou_o must_v also_o note_v that_o there_o be_v some_o which_o account_n the_o mercy_n of_o god_n but_o of_o small_a price_n because_o they_o do_v not_o apprehend_v at_o all_o the_o wrath_n and_o judgement_n of_o god_n as_o they_o ought_v and_o therefore_o the_o repentance_n of_o such_o person_n be_v none_o other_o than_o a_o very_a disguyse_n and_o feignedness_n of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o of_o the_o assurance_n of_o the_o conscience_n by_o the_o same_o m._n thou_o will_v then_o say_v that_o true_a repentance_n beat_v down_o the_o sinner_n in_o himself_o by_o the_o feel_v of_o his_o sin_n and_o of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n against_o they_o and_o then_o direct_v he_o to_o jesus_n christ_n to_o assure_v his_o conscience_n so_o beat_v down_o against_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o judgement_n of_o god._n pe._n it_o be_v even_o so_o but_o to_o assure_v it_o as_o thou_o say_v we_o must_v come_v to_o the_o other_o point_n the_o which_o jesus_n christ_n have_v command_v to_o preach_v in_o his_o name_n with_o true_a repentance_n which_o be_v the_o remission_n of_o sin_n the_o which_o propre_o belong_v to_o the_o gospel_n m._n i_o do_v well_o understand_v that_o the_o sinner_n which_o feel_v himself_o faulty_a before_o god_n by_o mean_a of_o his_o sin_n be_v as_o a_o traitor_n and_o wicked_a doer_n which_o can_v not_o be_v well_o assure_v of_o the_o punishment_n that_o he_o have_v merit_v by_o mean_a of_o his_o fault_n that_o he_o have_v commit_v if_o first_o of_o all_o he_o be_v not_o assure_v to_o have_v his_o grace_n &_o pardon_v of_o his_o prince_n and_o of_o his_o judge_n p._n that_o same_o be_v also_o the_o cause_n why_o that_o after_o we_o have_v make_v mention_n of_o the_o church_n which_o be_v likewise_o call_v the_o communion_n of_o saint_n we_o do_v also_o confess_v that_o we_o believe_v that_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n be_v in_o she_o by_o mean_a of_o the_o communion_n that_o it_o have_v with_o jesus_n christ_n of_o the_o which_o we_o have_v heretofore_o sufficient_o speak_v of_o the_o communion_n of_o saint_n &_o how_o the_o church_n enter_v into_o the_o same_o by_o mean_a of_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n m._n i_o do_v well_o remember_v that_o when_o we_o speak_v of_o that_o communion_n thou_o have_v set_v i_o and_o put_v i_o again_o upon_o this_o point_n to_o declare_v unto_o i_o the_o rest_n the_o which_o thou_o have_v not_o yet_o expound_v unto_o i_o p._n according_a to_o that_o which_o we_o have_v already_o say_v the_o church_n do_v not_o only_o obtain_v
saviour_n and_o redeemer_n jesus_n christ_n m._n this_o good_a god_n and_o father_n give_v we_o the_o grace_n the_o which_o i_o humble_o desire_v in_o the_o name_n of_o his_o son_n jesus_n chryst_n one_o church_n even_o so_o that_o all_o may_v be_v unite_v in_o he_o by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o serve_v and_o to_o honour_n he_o in_o truth_n and_o in_o spirit_n even_o as_o to_o he_o only_o
