why_o he_o may_v not_o direct_v and_o intend_v his_o speech_n to_o believer_n also_o and_o yet_o they_o remain_v only_o under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n ant._n why_o sir_n you_o say_v that_o the_o lord_n do_v speak_v to_o they_o out_o of_o the_o tabernacle_n and_o from_o the_o mercy-seat_n and_o that_o doubtless_o be_v according_a to_o the_o tenor_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o not_o according_a to_o the_o tenor_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n evan._n i_o pray_v you_o take_v notice_n that_o after_o the_o lord_n have_v pronounce_v all_o those_o blessing_n and_o as_o in_o their_o infancy_n and_o underage_n and_o so_o lead_v they_o on_o and_o allure_v they_o and_o fear_v they_o by_o such_o respect_n as_o these_o because_o they_o have_v but_o a_o
and_o therefore_o whereas_o they_o shall_v first_o have_v consider_v what_o a_o straight_a rule_n the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v and_o then_o have_v bring_v man_n heart_n and_o have_v lay_v it_o to_o it_o they_o contrariwise_o first_o consider_v what_o a_o crooked_a rule_n man_n heart_n be_v and_o then_o seek_v to_o make_v the_o law_n like_v unto_o it_o and_o so_o indeed_o they_o expound_v the_o law_n literal_o teach_v and_o hold_v that_o the_o righteousness_n which_o the_o law_n require_v be_v but_o a_o external_a righteousness_n consist_v in_o the_o outward_a observation_n of_o the_o law_n law_n and_o thus_o they_o separate_v christ_n from_o their_o sacrifice_n think_v they_o have_v discharge_v their_o duty_n very_o well_o when_o they_o have_v sacrifice_v and_o offer_v their_o offering_n not_o consider_v that_o the_o imperfection_n of_o the_o typical_a law_n which_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v make_v nothing_o perfect_a 9_o shall_v have_v lead_v they_o to_o find_v unable_a to_o do_v the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o be_v as_o unsufficient_a to_o help_v they_o and_o thus_o israel_n which_o follow_v the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n do_v not_o attain_v to_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n because_o they_o seek_v it_o not_o by_o faith_n 9.31.32_o but_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n for_o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n and_o go_v about_o to_o establish_v their_o own_o righteousness_n 10.3_o do_v not_o submit_v themselves_o to_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n ant._n then_o sir_n it_o seem_v that_o their_o ignorance_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o their_o error_n evan._n yea_o indeed_o be_v it_o for_o this_o veil_n of_o ignorance_n that_o be_v over_o their_o heart_n 3.14_o or_o this_o veil_n of_o blindness_n which_o be_v over_o their_o mind_n make_v their_o sight_n so_o weak_a and_o dim_a that_o they_o be_v no_o more_o able_a to_o behold_v the_o glorious_a beauty_n of_o the_o lord_n holy_a and_o pure_a nature_n manifest_v in_o the_o law_n as_o it_o be_v the_o covenant_n of_o work_n than_o the_o weak_a eye_n of_o man_n be_v able_a to_o behold_v the_o bright_a sun_n when_o it_o shine_v in_o full_a strength_n and_o therefore_o we_o read_v that_o when_o moses_n come_v down_o from_o the_o mount_n with_o the_o two_o table_n 29._o wherein_o be_v wriâ—ten_v the_o word_n of_o the_o do_v otherwise_o but_o alas_o the_o number_n of_o they_o be_v very_o few_o especial_o in_o the_o future_a age_n after_o moses_n for_o their_o blind_a guide_n have_v so_o leven_v the_o people_n with_o their_o corrupt_a doctrine_n that_o at_o the_o time_n of_o our_o saviour_n come_v in_o the_o flesh_n we_o reâ—dâ—_n but_o of_o two_o to_o wit_n simeon_n and_o anna_n that_o desire_v he_o or_o look_v for_o he_o for_o although_o all_o of_o they_o have_v in_o their_o mouth_n the_o messiah_n 87._o and_o the_o bless_a estate_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o david_n yet_o they_o dream_v that_o this_o messiah_n shall_v be_v some_o great_a monarch_n that_o shall_v come_v in_o outward_a pomp_n and_o power_n and_o save_v and_o deliver_v they_o from_o the_o roman_n of_o who_o bondage_n they_o be_v very_o sensible_a and_o weary_a but_o as_o for_o their_o spiritual_a bondage_n under_o the_o law_n and_o sin_n they_o be_v not_o sensible_a of_o it_o and_o so_o indeed_o see_v no_o need_n of_o deliverance_n from_o it_o and_o all_o because_o their_o false_a teacher_n have_v turn_v the_o whole_a law_n into_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n to_o be_v do_v for_o justification_n and_o salvation_n yea_o such_o a_o covenant_n as_o they_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v and_o fulfil_v if_o noâ—_n by_o do_v yet_o by_o make_v satisfaction_n with_o their_o sacrifice_n and_o though_o jesus_n christ_n near_o to_o adam_n covenant_n and_o paradise_n be_v most_o prone_a to_o such_o conceit_n and_o second_o because_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o celestial_a paradise_n be_v but_o little_o mention_v in_o the_o old_a testament_n they_o for_o the_o most_o part_n have_v but_o a_o glimmer_a knowledge_n of_o they_o and_o so_o can_v not_o yield_v obedience_n free_o as_o son_n therefore_o to_o have_v the_o calamity_n of_o this_o life_n inflict_v upon_o they_o for_o their_o disobedience_n as_o the_o blessing_n of_o this_o life_n confer_v upon_o they_o for_o their_o obedience_n evan._n believer_n who_o according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o their_o faith_n do_v believe_v the_o resurrection_n of_o their_o body_n after_o death_n and_o eternal_a life_n in_o glory_n and_o that_o it_o be_v to_o be_v obtain_v not_o by_o thâ—â—orkes_n of_o the_o law_n but_o by_o faith_n in_o the_o mâ—ssiâ—h_a oâ—_n promise_v seed_n and_o answerable_o as_o they_o believe_v this_o answerable_o they_o yield_v obedience_n to_o the_o law_n free_o without_o fear_n of_o punishment_n or_o hope_v of_o reward_n but_o alas_o the_o spirit_n of_o faith_n be_v very_o weak_a in_o the_o most_o of_o they_o and_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n very_o strong_a and_o therefore_o they_o stand_v in_o need_n to_o be_v induce_v and_o constrain_v to_o obedience_n for_o fear_n of_o punishment_n and_o hope_v of_o reward_n the_o second_o sort_n of_o they_o be_v the_o sadducee_n and_o their_o sect_n and_o these_o do_v not_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v any_o resurrection_n nor_o any_o life_n but_o the_o life_n of_o this_o world_n 23._o and_o yet_o they_o endeavour_v to_o keep_v the_o law_n that_o god_n may_v bless_v they_o here_o 259._o and_o that_o it_o may_v go_v well_o with_o they_o in_o this_o present_a life_n the_o three_o sort_n and_o indeed_o the_o great_a number_n of_o they_o in_o the_o future_a age_n after_o moses_n be_v the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n and_o their_o sect_n and_o they_o hold_v obtain_v temporal_a happiness_n but_o eternal_a also_o for_o though_o it_o have_v please_v the_o lord_n to_o make_v know_v unto_o his_o people_n by_o the_o ministry_n of_o moses_n 114._o that_o the_o law_n be_v give_v not_o to_o retain_v man_n in_o the_o confidence_n of_o their_o own_o work_n but_o to_o drive_v they_o out_o of_o themselves_o and_o lead_v they_o to_o christ_n the_o promise_a seed_n yet_o after_o that_o time_n the_o priest_n and_o the_o levite_n who_o be_v the_o expounder_n of_o the_o law_n and_o who_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n do_v succeed_v mount_n do_v so_o conceive_v and_o teach_v of_o god_n intention_n in_o give_v the_o law_n as_o though_o it_o have_v be_v that_o they_o by_o their_o obedience_n to_o it_o shall_v obtain_v righteousness_n and_o eternal_a life_n covenant_n but_o the_o law_n 118._o and_o so_o in_o very_a deed_n they_o conceive_v that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n to_o eternal_a life_n then_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n ant._n sure_o then_o it_o seem_v they_o do_v not_o understand_v and_o consider_v that_o the_o law_n as_o it_o be_v the_o covenant_n of_o work_n do_v not_o only_o bind_v the_o outward_a man_n but_o also_o the_o inward_a man_n even_o the_o soul_n and_o spirit_n and_o require_v all_o holy_a thought_n motion_n and_o disposition_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o soul_n evan._n oh_o no_o they_o neither_o teach_v it_o nor_o understand_v it_o so_o spiritual_o neither_o can_v they_o be_v persuade_v that_o the_o law_n do_v require_v so_o much_o at_o man_n hand_n for_o they_o first_o lay_v this_o down_o for_o a_o christ_n which_o in_o respect_n of_o time_n be_v but_o finite_a make_v full_a satisfaction_n to_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n which_o be_v infinite_a eva._n though_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n in_o respect_n of_o time_n be_v but_o finite_a yet_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o person_n that_o suffer_v his_o suffering_n come_v to_o be_v of_o infinite_a value_n for_o christ_n be_v god_n and_o man_n in_o one_o person_n and_o therefore_o his_o suffering_n be_v a_o sufficient_a and_o full_a ransom_n for_o man_n soul_n be_v of_o more_o value_n than_o the_o death_n and_o destruction_n of_o all_o creature_n nom._n but_o sir_n you_o know_v that_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n require_v man_n own_o obedience_n or_o punishment_n when_o it_o say_v he_o that_o do_v these_o thing_n shall_v live_v in_o they_o and_o curse_a be_v every_o one_o that_o continue_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n which_o be_v write_v in_o the_o book_n of_o the_o law_n to_o do_v they_o how_o then_o can_v believer_n be_v obedience_n or_o punishment_n yet_o it_o no_o where_o disallow_v or_o exclude_v that_o which_o be_v do_v or_o suffer_v by_o another_o in_o his_o behalf_n cat_n neither_o be_v it_o repugnant_a to_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n for_o so_o there_o be_v a_o satisfaction_n perform_v by_o man_n through_o a_o sufficient_a punishment_n for_o the_o disobedience_n of_o man_n the_o law_n be_v satisfy_v
