for_o all_o their_o action_n which_o may_v be_v inquire_v into_o upon_o occasion_n and_o that_o the_o chief_a of_o the_o ruler_n be_v subject_a under_o the_o law_n and_o punishable_a by_o it_o if_o they_o be_v transgressor_n as_o well_o as_o the_o poor_a of_o the_o people_n we_o know_v that_o his_o majesty_n the_o king_n be_v the_o chief_a of_o the_o ruler_n or_o chief_a ruler_n in_o the_o by_o they_o how_o near_o this_o border_n upon_o treason_n i_o leave_v the_o civil_a magistrate_n to_o judge_v and_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o make_v a_o more_o favourable_a interpretation_n of_o their_o word_n yet_o when_o they_o express_v their_o loyalty_n in_o such_o doubtful_a term_n and_o their_o obedience_n ground_v upon_o such_o a_o ticklish_a hold_n it_o be_v easy_a to_o imagine_v what_o sense_n they_o themselves_o own_o and_o consider_v withal_o how_o obstinate_a and_o deaf_a they_o be_v to_o all_o good_a principle_n and_o instruction_n and_o how_o numerous_a in_o many_o not_o be_v seduce_v and_o corrupt_v by_o such_o dangerous_a doctrine_n oath_n 4._o they_o affirm_v that_o the_o take_n of_o a_o oath_n in_o any_o case_n whatever_o though_o before_o a_o lawful_a magistrate_n be_v unlawful_a and_o contrary_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o whether_o it_o be_v at_o first_o instill_v into_o they_o by_o the_o jesuit_n to_o avoid_v the_o oath_n of_o supremacy_n or_o take_v up_o to_o give_v themselves_o a_o great_a latitude_n and_o liberty_n to_o the_o commission_n of_o all_o that_o villainy_n and_o wickedness_n which_o in_o many_o case_n the_o imposition_n of_o a_o oath_n may_v and_o do_v frequent_o obstruct_v and_o hinder_v i_o know_v not_o but_o this_o i_o know_v that_o to_o deny_v the_o lawfulness_n of_o take_v a_o oath_n be_v to_o throw_v away_o the_o great_a tie_n and_o security_n that_o any_o king_n have_v upon_o his_o public_a officer_n minister_n and_o subject_n and_o by_o which_o all_o man_n title_n be_v clear_v in_o civil_a cause_n and_o justice_n execute_v in_o cause_n criminal_a and_o indeed_o that_o by_o which_o all_o human_a society_n be_v preserve_v and_o in_o all_o these_o case_n the_o take_n of_o a_o oath_n have_v be_v and_o be_v still_o use_v by_o all_o nation_n under_o the_o heaven_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n it_o be_v command_v as_o a_o thing_n that_o be_v lawful_a and_o necessary_a in_o the_o forementioned_a instance_n deut._n 6._o 13._o thou_o shall_v fear_v the_o lord_n thy_o god_n and_o serve_v he_o and_o swear_v by_o his_o name_n so_o deut._n 10._o 20._o jer._n 4._o 2._o thou_o shall_v swear_v the_o lord_n live_v in_o truth_n in_o judgement_n and_o in_o righteousness_n and_o to_o such_o as_o swear_v in_o such_o a_o holy_a and_o religious_a manner_n god_n promise_v a_o blessing_n jer._n 12._o 16._o if_o they_o will_v diligent_o learn_v the_o way_n of_o my_o people_n to_o swear_v by_o my_o name_n then_o shall_v they_o be_v build_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o my_o people_n and_o if_o the_o quake_a generation_n shall_v object_v and_o say_v that_o this_o be_v under_o the_o law_n therefore_o now_o not_o to_o be_v use_v they_o may_v remember_v that_o the_o exact_v and_o take_v of_o a_o oath_n be_v use_v long_o before_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n thus_o abraham_n swear_v to_o abimelech_n gen._n 21._o and_o he_o require_v a_o oath_n of_o his_o servant_n gen._n 24._o and_o jacob_n require_v a_o oath_n of_o his_o son_n joseph_n gen._n 47._o 31._o but_o what_o if_o a_o duty_n
have_v god_n command_v every_o day_n of_o our_o life_n to_o be_v whole_o devote_v to_o he_o it_o have_v be_v but_o reason_n and_o equity_n and_o since_o that_o out_o of_o regard_n to_o our_o weakness_n and_o that_o condition_n of_o mortality_n wherein_o he_o have_v place_v we_o he_o require_v but_o one_o day_n in_o a_o week_n to_o be_v more_o especial_o set_v apart_o for_o his_o service_n it_o be_v most_o irrational_a not_o to_o give_v he_o that_o beside_o our_o merciful_a lord_n have_v a_o regard_n in_o this_o commandment_n even_o to_o the_o beast_n themselves_o as_o a_o part_n of_o his_o creation_n which_o sure_o be_v not_o to_o be_v worse_o use_v now_o under_o the_o gospel_n than_o under_o the_o law_n but_o have_v as_o much_o reason_n to_o be_v rest_v on_o the_o sabbath_n day_n now_o as_o they_o have_v then_o 3._o since_o that_o this_o be_v reasonable_a what_o fit_a day_n can_v we_o pitch_v upon_o than_o the_o first_o day_n of_o the_o week_n on_o which_o our_o bless_a saviour_n jesus_n arise_v from_o the_o dead_a for_o if_o the_o jew_n together_o with_o the_o commemoration_n of_o the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n wherein_o god_n have_v perfect_v all_o his_o work_n rest_v on_o the_o seven_o day_n do_v likewise_o keep_v holy_a that_o day_n with_o respect_n to_o their_o deliverance_n from_o the_o tyranny_n of_o pharaoh_n how_o much_o great_a reason_n have_v we_o to_o solemnize_v the_o christian_a sabbath_n with_o they_o indeed_o to_o celebrate_v the_o goodness_n wisdom_n and_o power_n of_o god_n in_o make_v of_o all_o thing_n in_o remember_v the_o glorious_a resurrection_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n wherein_o he_o rise_v as_o a_o triumphant_a conqueror_n from_o his_o bed_n of_o darkness_n after_o he_o have_v dis-mantled_n the_o prison_n of_o hell_n and_o the_o grave_a and_o wrought_v a_o mighty_a salvation_n for_o mankind_n 4._o that_o as_o god_n do_v then_o so_o christ_n have_v transmit_v his_o power_n to_o they_o the_o apostle_n and_o succeed_a church_n of_o god_n now_o may_v very_o reasonable_o dispose_v of_o we_o in_o matter_n of_o this_o nature_n and_o direct_v all_o its_o member_n into_o some_o uniform_a way_n at_o such_o set_a time_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n and_o that_o they_o have_v do_v so_o appear_v both_o by_o some_o mention_n of_o the_o lord_n day_n in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o by_o the_o constant_a suffrage_n of_o the_o father_n of_o the_o church_n since_o that_o time_n which_o be_v a_o sufficient_a obligation_n on_o all_o christian_n to_o a_o due_a constant_a and_o diligent_a observation_n of_o the_o christian_a sabbath_n remember_v to_o keep_v holy_a the_o sabbath_n day_n and_o lest_o any_o man_n shall_v say_v that_o this_o command_n be_v give_v by_o moses_n and_o so_o at_o a_o end_n and_o therefore_o that_o christian_n be_v not_o bind_v by_o it_o let_v he_o take_v this_o for_o a_o answer_n and_o consider_v it_o well_o and_o then_o he_o will_v see_v there_o be_v no_o weight_n in_o the_o objection_n and_o so_o will_v not_o be_v move_v when_o by_o impertinent_a cavil_v fellow_n it_o be_v urge_v upon_o he_o i_o say_v therefore_o first_o that_o every_o one_o of_o the_o ten_o commandment_n be_v moral_a and_o for_o that_o very_a reason_n bind_v all_o christian_n still_o and_o therefore_o the_o church_n of_o england_n though_o these_o rebellious_a quaker_n disow_v their_o mother_n have_v make_v they_o a_o part_n of_o her_o liturgy_n and_o all_o good_a people_n teach_v they_o to_o their_o child_n in_o their_o catechism_n as_o know_v that_o all_o christian_n be_v to_o give_v obedience_n to_o they_o under_o the_o gospel_n second_o our_o bless_a saviour_n say_v matth._n 5._o 17._o that_o he_o come_v not_o to_o dissolve_v the_o law_n and_o the_o prophet_n but_o to_o fulfil_v think_v not_o say_v he_o that_o i_o be_o come_v to_o dissolve_v the_o law_n and_o the_o prophet_n that_o be_v to_o take_v away_o the_o obligation_n of_o that_o rule_n of_o the_o duty_n of_o man_n to_o god_n and_o his_o neighbour_n give_v first_o by_o moses_n and_o afterward_o repeat_v and_o inculcate_v by_o the_o prophet_n but_o to_o fulfil_v they_o that_o be_v to_o supply_v accomplish_v and_o perfect_a those_o rule_n and_o doctrine_n of_o just_a and_o unjust_a contain_v in_o they_o by_o a_o more_o ample_a interpretation_n and_o other_o improvement_n befit_v the_o state_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o if_o as_o these_o familist_n persuade_v their_o unwary_a proselyte_n to_o fulfil_v be_v to_o put_v a_o end_n to_o a_o thing_n the_o sense_n must_v be_v thus_o that_o christ_n come_v not_o to_o destroy_v that_o be_v to_o put_v a_o end_n to_o the_o law_n but_o to_o put_v a_o end_n to_o it_o but_o who_o can_v imagine_v without_o blasphemy_n our_o bless_a saviour_n will_v be_v guilty_a of_o such_o a_o absurd_a speech_n now_o if_o it_o shall_v be_v ask_v why_o then_o christ_n do_v not_o improve_v the_o four_o commandment_n touch_v the_o keep_n holy_a of_o the_o sabbath_n it_o be_v answer_v that_o this_o be_v already_o strict_o observe_v among_o the_o jew_n even_o unto_o superstition_n and_o therefore_o there_o need_v rather_o a_o relaxation_n than_o a_o addition_n to_o this_o commandment_n for_o whereas_o the_o jew_n on_o that_o day_n will_v not_o so_o much_o as_o kindle_v a_o fire_n or_o dress_v the_o meat_n they_o shall_v eat_v or_o carry_v any_o burden_n or_o take_v a_o journey_n and_o hence_o accuse_v our_o saviour_n for_o heal_v on_o the_o sabbath_n and_o his_o disciple_n for_o pluck_v the_o ear_n of_o corn_n jesus_n tell_v they_o that_o the_o sabbath_n be_v make_v for_o man_n and_o not_o man_n for_o the_o sabbath_n intimate_v that_o work_v of_o necessity_n and_o mercy_n may_v lawful_o be_v do_v on_o the_o sabbath_n though_o not_o the_o work_v of_o a_o man_n ordinary_a trade_n and_o employment_n sect_n ii_o worship_n almighty_a god_n have_v give_v the_o whole_a earth_n to_o man_n for_o his_o habitation_n common_a reason_n and_o justice_n require_v that_o man_n shall_v sanctisie_n and_o separate_v some_o peculiar_a place_n for_o the_o service_n and_o worship_n of_o his_o great_a creator_n and_o according_o we_o find_v in_o all_o age_n of_o the_o world_n and_o by_o all_o person_n profess_v any_o religion_n at_o all_o some_o particular_a and_o set_v place_n appoint_v to_o invocate_v and_o worship_v the_o supreme_a deity_n among_o the_o jew_n god_n have_v his_o temple_n whither_o all_o the_o tribe_n go_v up_o to_o worship_n and_o in_o profane_a history_n we_o read_v of_o temple_n dedicate_v to_o the_o use_n and_o service_n of_o some_o supreme_a deity_n from_o whence_o it_o appear_v that_o the_o very_a law_n of_o nature_n command_v to_o fix_v and_o set_v apart_o a_o place_n for_o the_o service_n of_o god_n and_o god_n will_v have_v this_o of_o we_o too_o that_o as_o he_o have_v reserve_v a_o portion_n of_o the_o time_n of_o our_o life_n for_o the_o celebration_n of_o his_o honour_n so_o have_v he_o also_o reserve_v a_o portion_n out_o of_o the_o place_n of_o our_o residence_n therefore_o in_o ezek._n 45._o god_n command_v the_o child_n of_o israel_n and_o in_o they_o all_o the_o nation_n of_o the_o world_n that_o when_o they_o come_v to_o inhabit_v the_o land_n he_o give_v they_o they_o must_v divide_v it_o into_o three_o part_n one_o for_o the_o people_n another_o for_o the_o king_n but_o the_o first_o for_o god_n himself_o but_o and_o if_o it_o shall_v be_v say_v that_o this_o be_v a_o command_n under_o the_o levitical_a law_n and_o so_o not_o obligatory_a to_o we_o christian_n who_o live_v not_o under_o that_o law_n it_o must_v be_v remember_v that_o though_o god_n command_v a_o house_n and_o place_n for_o his_o service_n to_o be_v build_v and_o set_v apart_o yet_o all_o mankind_n be_v tie_v to_o the_o same_o duty_n by_o a_o law_n more_o ancient_a than_o that_o of_o moses_n even_o by_o the_o very_a law_n of_o nature_n which_o lay_v a_o perpetual_a and_o indispensable_a injunction_n upon_o all_o man_n that_o god_n have_v his_o place_n of_o worship_n and_o as_o it_o be_v residence_n among_o they_o that_o they_o may_v live_v in_o a_o continual_a dependence_n upon_o he_o and_o remember_v that_o that_o they_o receive_v the_o very_a place_n of_o their_o abide_v and_o habitation_n from_o his_o gift_n and_o benevolence_n and_o it_o be_v some_o hundred_o of_o year_n before_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n be_v give_v that_o jacob_n when_o he_o be_v poor_a and_o have_v not_o wherewithal_o to_o build_v god_n a_o house_n yet_o consecrate_v a_o then_o a_o undoubted_a truth_n that_o if_o the_o priesthood_n of_o jesus_n be_v more_o excellent_a than_o that_o of_o aaron_n and_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n a_o more_o honourable_a and_o excellent_a function_n than_o that_o of_o the_o levite_n under_o the_o law_n then_o ought_v the_o maintenance_n of_o the_o euangelical_n minister_n to_o be_v more_o large_a and_o honourable_a than_o they_o under_o the_o law_n second_o the_o apostle_n 1_o tim._n 3._o 2._o command_n that_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d good_a housekeeper_n and_o how_o shall_v they_o be_v so_o if_o they_o have_v not_o provision_n and_o mean_n to_o maintain_v it_o and_o that_o in_o a_o certain_a manner_n for_o if_o themselves_o be_v feed_v at_o the_o trencher_n of_o benevolence_n what_o assurance_n have_v they_o of_o a_o dish_n of_o meat_n for_o their_o poor_a brethren_n the_o heaven_n themselves_o be_v unstable_a now_o it_o rain_v and_o we_o have_v abundance_n then_o come_v drought_n and_o all_o be_v in_o scarcity_n the_o humour_n of_o man_n be_v as_o variable_a the_o people_n of_o lystra_n that_o make_v a_o god_n of_o st._n paul_n on_o the_o one_o day_n stone_v he_o on_o the_o other_o act_v 14._o and_o in_o the_o fiery_a time_n itself_o when_o zeal_n be_v most_o inflame_v our_o saviour_n as_o it_o seem_v find_v even_o then_o a_o cool_a blast_n when_o for_o want_v of_o ordinary_a supply_n he_o be_v fain_o to_o fetch_v twenty_o penny_n by_o a_o miracle_n out_o of_o a_o fish_n mouth_n to_o serve_v his_o need_n withal_o matth._n 17._o 27._o unless_o therefore_o the_o zeal_n and_o piety_n of_o man_n towards_o god_n do_v now_o burn_v as_o bright_a as_o in_o the_o apostle_n time_n when_o they_o think_v nothing_o too_o much_o or_o too_o good_a for_o their_o spiritual_a father_n it_o be_v the_o most_o wicked_a and_o unseemly_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o put_v the_o minister_n of_o jesus_n either_o to_o labour_n like_o mechanic_n with_o their_o hand_n for_o their_o bread_n or_o to_o live_v upon_o the_o uncertain_a benevolence_n of_o the_o people_n wherefore_o when_o the_o great_a love_n of_o the_o first_o age_n to_o christ_n and_o his_o minister_n by_o degree_n cool_v and_o be_v abate_v and_o man_n grow_v to_o be_v lover_n of_o themselves_o more_o than_o lover_n of_o god_n it_o please_v that_o alwise_a providence_n which_o always_o watch_v over_o the_o church_n so_o to_o inspire_v the_o heart_n of_o christian_a king_n and_o prince_n to_o secure_v his_o provision_n that_o though_o man_n shall_v so_o far_o forget_v and_o deny_v god_n from_o who_o they_o receive_v all_o that_o they_o have_v as_o to_o detain_v sacrilegious_o his_o right_n yet_o they_o may_v be_v compel_v by_o law_n and_o external_a discipline_n to_o pay_v he_o this_o his_o rent_n or_o tribute_n which_o they_o will_v not_o do_v of_o their_o own_o accord_n for_o all_o the_o tithe_n be_v the_o lord_n and_o the_o minister_n claim_v they_o not_o as_o a_o duty_n of_o the_o people_n unto_o they_o but_o as_o the_o lord_n portion_n which_o he_o give_v to_o his_o minister_n and_o so_o the_o scripture_n speak_v mal._n 3._o 8._o will_v a_o man_n rob_v god_n yet_o you_o have_v rob_v i_o say_v the_o lord_n mark_v well_o god_n do_v not_o say_v they_o have_v rob_v his_o minister_n though_o he_o give_v the_o tithe_n to_o they_o but_o they_o have_v rob_v he_o and_o whoever_o sacrilegious_o detain_v and_o keep_v back_o his_o tithe_n rob_v god_n and_o must_v expect_v to_o be_v curse_v with_o a_o curse_n almighty_a god_n therefore_o reserve_v a_o portion_n out_o of_o every_o man_n estate_n as_o his_o rent_n or_o tribute_n to_o the_o end_n that_o every_o one_o may_v acknowledge_v his_o sovereignty_n and_o dominion_n over_o all_o that_o he_o possess_v questionless_a the_o civil_a magistrate_n may_v and_o aught_o to_o make_v law_n whereby_o man_n may_v be_v force_v to_o give_v god_n his_o due_a when_o they_o shall_v grow_v so_o wicked_a and_o atheistical_a as_o to_o rob_v he_o of_o it_o and_o if_o it_o be_v lawful_a for_o a_o man_n to_o appeal_v to_o the_o secular_a power_n to_o secure_v his_o own_o estate_n it_o be_v much_o more_o lawful_a to_o use_v they_o to_o preserve_v god_n revenue_n and_o if_o it_o be_v not_o some_o more_o mischievous_a design_n these_o abominable_a wretch_n drive_v at_o they_o may_v as_o well_o quarrel_n at_o the_o law_n that_o be_v make_v for_o the_o maintenance_n of_o the_o poor_a as_o at_o those_o that_o be_v make_v to_o constrain_v they_o to_o pay_v their_o tithe_n since_o the_o poor_a be_v likewise_o christ_n charge_n as_o well_o as_o the_o minister_n and_o yet_o none_o but_o some_o covetous_a worlding_n will_v say_v that_o it_o be_v better_a they_o shall_v be_v leave_v to_o the_o free_a benevolence_n of_o every_o one_o if_o they_o be_v it_o be_v doubtful_a whether_o a_o great_a many_o will_v not_o starve_v but_o will_v you_o know_v what_o design_n it_o be_v the_o devil_n drive_v at_o by_o set_v these_o people_n to_o cry_v out_o against_o the_o maintenance_n of_o the_o minister_n it_o be_v brief_o this_o to_o bring_v man_n back_o from_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o liberty_n of_o the_o gospel_n into_o their_o ancient_a bondage_n of_o pagan_a superstition_n and_o idolatry_n and_o to_o compass_v this_o he_o make_v these_o wild_a people_n his_o instrument_n for_o he_o well_o know_v that_o it_o be_v the_o minister_n that_o lay_v open_a his_o plot_n and_o warn_v man_n to_o take_v heed_n of_o fall_v into_o his_o snare_n and_o trap_n and_o they_o daily_o encourage_v man_n in_o virtue_n and_o instruct_v they_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n now_o if_o he_o can_v take_v these_o enemy_n of_o his_o kingdom_n away_o he_o be_v then_o sure_a the_o people_n will_v perish_v through_o ignorance_n and_o become_v his_o own_o easy_a prey_n and_o there_o be_v no_o better_a way_n to_o make_v sure_a work_n with_o the_o shepherd_n than_o to_o encourage_v the_o flock_n to_o withdraw_v and_o detain_v though_o it_o be_v with_o the_o great_a injury_n to_o god_n and_o their_o own_o soul_n that_o portion_n and_o maintenance_n god_n have_v command_v to_o give_v he_o and_o assign_v over_o to_o his_o minister_n for_o faith_n come_v by_o hear_v and_o how_o shall_v people_n believe_v except_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v preach_v to_o they_o i_o shall_v now_o take_v away_o as_o brief_o as_o i_o can_v those_o objection_n which_o these_o bold_a enthusiast_n make_v against_o the_o present_a maintenance_n of_o the_o minister_n i._o and_o first_o they_o endeavour_v to_o persuade_v man_n that_o tithe_n be_v levitical_a and_o consequent_o when_o christ_n come_v they_o be_v abolish_v with_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n but_o to_o this_o impious_a cavil_n i_o answer_v 1._o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o of_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n abolish_v or_o take_v away_o by_o christ_n but_o what_o do_v adumbrate_v prefigure_v and_o shadow_v out_o his_o come_n in_o the_o flesh_n for_o whatever_o be_v natural_a and_o moral_a oblige_v we_o still_o and_o will_v do_v so_o to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n therefore_o christ_n say_v mat._n 5._o 17._o that_o be_v come_v not_o to_o destroy_v the_o law_n and_o the_o prophet_n but_o to_o fulfil_v it_o i._n e._n to_o make_v it_o more_o perfect_a than_o it_o be_v before_o but_o it_o be_v apparent_a that_o tithe_n be_v no_o type_n of_o any_o thing_n nor_o do_v they_o shadow_v out_o any_o thing_n to_o come_v that_o when_o that_o substance_n be_v come_v they_o shall_v be_v take_v away_o and_o we_o may_v as_o well_o say_v that_o prayer_n to_o god_n be_v take_v away_o by_o the_o come_n of_o christ_n as_o that_o the_o revenue_n due_a to_o god_n be_v take_v away_o for_o we_o be_v as_o much_o bind_v to_o honour_n god_n with_o our_o substance_n as_o with_o our_o lip_n 2._o tithe_n be_v due_a to_o god_n and_o pay_v before_o ever_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n begin_v and_o therefore_o can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v proper_a and_o natural_a to_o that_o in_o gen._n 14._o it_o be_v say_v that_o whilst_o abraham_n dwell_v at_o hebron_n in_o the_o plain_a of_o mamre_n his_o brother_n lot_n be_v carry_v away_o prisoner_n by_o the_o four_o assyrian_n or_o babylonian_a king_n with_o all_o that_o he_o have_v and_o that_o abraham_n confederate_a with_o mamre_a the_o amorite_n and_o his_o brethren_n escol_n and_o aner_n arm_v his_o household_n three_o hundred_o and_o eighteen_o in_o all_o and_o pursue_v they_o unto_o dan_o where_o he_o smite_v they_o in_o the_o night_n and_o recover_v lot_n and_o the_o prey_n and_o that_o as_o he_o return_v melchisedek_n king_n of_o salem_n priest_n of_o the_o most_o high_a god_n meet_v he_o and_o give_v he_o bread_n and_o wine_n and_o bless_v he_o and_o pray_v and_o praise_v
