a_o contrite_a spirit_n &_o that_o tremble_v at_o my_o word_n now_o a_o man_n may_v be_v much_o break_v with_o affliction_n and_o yet_o be_v far_o from_o that_o poverty_n of_o spirit_n to_o which_o christ_n pronounce_v the_o blessing_n bless_a be_v the_o poor_a in_o spirit_n a_o man_n heart_n may_v be_v as_o much_o lift_v up_o within_o he_o when_o he_o be_v poor_a naked_a in_o outward_a respect_n as_o if_o he_o be_v rich_a and_o full_a and_o want_v nothing_o it_o be_v only_o a_o true_a sight_n of_o sin_n which_o can_v work_v true_a poverty_n of_o spirit_n so_o whereas_o a_o contrite_a heart_n be_v say_v to_o tremble_v at_o the_o word_n of_o god_n you_o know_v that_o be_v usual_o a_o fruit_n of_o man_n be_v sensible_a of_o their_o sin_n and_o not_o of_o outward_a trouble_n to_o make_v they_o tremble_v at_o the_o word_n of_o god_n thus_o have_v we_o prove_v to_o you_o that_o by_o brokennesse_n of_o heart_n be_v mean_v a_o true_a and_o godly_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n come_v we_o now_o to_o show_v you_o more_o particular_o wherein_o this_o brokennesse_n of_o heart_n do_v consist_v which_o be_v as_o follow_v it_o do_v consist_v first_o in_o a_o through_o conviction_n of_o the_o ugly_a nature_n of_o sin_n i_o call_v that_o a_o thorough_a conviction_n of_o the_o ugliness_n of_o sin_n whereby_o man_n be_v not_o only_o incline_v to_o think_v of_o sin_n as_o a_o ugly_a deform_a thing_n but_o be_v altogether_o persuade_v that_o it_o be_v so_o and_o do_v no_o more_o question_v it_o then_o they_o question_v the_o ugliness_n of_o any_o thing_n which_o be_v abominable_a to_o the_o eye_n or_o against_o which_o they_o have_v a_o natural_a antipathy_n as_o those_o that_o have_v a_o natural_a antipathy_n against_o any_o kind_n of_o creature_n etc._n etc._n or_o rather_o we_o may_v describe_v a_o thorough_a conviction_n thus_o namely_o it_o be_v such_o a_o conviction_n of_o the_o loathsomenesse_n of_o sin_n as_o be_v effectual_a to_o persuade_v with_o man_n to_o endeavour_v the_o forsake_v of_o it_o observe_v that_o we_o do_v define_v brokennesse_n of_o heart_n to_o consist_v in_o a_o through_o conviction_n not_o mere_o of_o the_o dangerousnesse_n of_o sin_n or_o evil_a consequence_n thereof_o but_o in_o conviction_n of_o the_o ugly_a nature_n of_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o holy_a nature_n and_o righteous_a law_n of_o god_n see_v a_o text_n for_o this_o purpose_n namely_o job._n 42.51.6_o i_o have_v hear_v of_o thou_o with_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o ear_n but_o now_o my_o eye_n see_v thou_o therefore_o do_v i_o abhor_v myself_o and_o repent_v in_o dust_n and_o ash_n that_o which_o make_v job_n abhor_v himself_o be_v the_o sight_n of_o god_n and_o how_o do_v that_o do_v it_o why_o thus_o the_o more_o he_o behold_v god_n the_o more_o he_o do_v observe_v his_o own_o contrariety_n to_o god_n by_o reason_n of_o sin_n whence_o spring_v that_o self_n abhorrence_n of_o he_o and_o this_o be_v the_o but_o think_v of_o the_o mean_a office_n which_o he_o have_v do_v in_o his_o time_n it_o will_v much_o abash_v he_o especial_o if_o he_o be_v a_o man_n of_o a_o proud_a spirit_n so_o break_v heart_a sinner_n when_o they_o call_v to_o mind_v what_o base_a drudge_n they_o have_v be_v to_o sin_n and_o satan_n &_o what_o sordid_a work_n they_o have_v be_v employ_v in_o by_o they_o former_o it_o fill_v they_o with_o shame_n and_o confusion_n of_o face_n not_o because_o their_o spirit_n be_v proud_a for_o this_o be_v not_o pride_n in_o they_o but_o because_o they_o be_v raise_v up_o to_o a_o holy_a disdain_n and_o contempt_n of_o sin_n as_o of_o that_o which_o be_v the_o great_a badge_n of_o dishonour_n that_o can_v cleave_v to_o they_o noble_a personage_n be_v not_o more_o ashamed_a of_o have_v their_o blood_n stain_v by_o treason_n than_o break_a heart_a sinner_n be_v of_o those_o stain_n of_o sin_n which_o have_v cleaved_a to_o they_o nor_o be_v they_o only_o ashamed_a of_o the_o day_n of_o their_o vanity_n but_o also_o of_o the_o vanity_n of_o their_o present_a day_n etc._n etc._n four_o break_v heartedness_n consist_v in_o self-denial_n and_o resolution_n to_o forsake_v sin_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v a_o break_a heart_n be_v always_o a_o selfe-denying_a heart_n and_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v so_o because_o break_a heart_a person_n be_v very_o sensible_a of_o or_o defectivenesse_n which_o be_v flat_a blasphemy_n to_o ascribe_v to_o god_n who_o be_v all_o light_n and_o in_o he_o no_o darkness_n at_o all_o but_o mere_o suffer_v to_o be_v and_o for_o holy_a end_n and_o purpose_n some_o of_o which_o we_o may_v partly_o guess_v at_o do_v refuse_v to_o let_v and_o hinder_v though_o it_o be_v in_o the_o power_n of_o his_o hand_n to_o do_v it_o god_n be_v no_o way_n bind_v to_o stay_v the_o hand_n of_o man_n when_o they_o stretch_v they_o forth_o to_o their_o own_o ruin_n nor_o can_v he_o be_v say_v to_o tempt_v any_o man_n when_o he_o be_v tempt_v and_o draw_v away_o of_o his_o own_o heart_n lust_n the_o lord_n mean_a time_n refuse_v to_o prevent_v or_o return_v that_o his_o captivity_n we_o deny_v not_o that_o god_n do_v concur_v to_o those_o that_o it_o jar_n proceed_v mere_o from_o the_o untunednesse_n of_o the_o instrument_n and_o not_o from_o the_o unskilfulnesse_n of_o such_o a_o musician_n there_o be_v something_o in_o every_o evil_a action_n which_o be_v good_a namely_o its_o natural_a be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o physical_a motion_n and_o so_o far_o forth_o it_o be_v from_o god_n but_o the_o moral_a pravity_n and_o irregularity_n of_o it_o be_v from_o man_n alone_o we_o also_o grant_v that_o god_n do_v sometime_o lay_v stumble_v block_n in_o the_o way_n of_o sinner_n as_o it_o be_v ezek._n 3.20_o but_o yet_o he_o only_o suffer_v and_o no_o way_n compel_v they_o to_o fall_v or_o thrust_v they_o down_o a_o man_n may_v walk_v if_o he_o be_v very_o careful_a without_o fall_v though_o many_o stumble_a block_n shall_v lie_v in_o his_o way_n that_o god_n be_v only_o the_o author_n of_o the_o occasion_n and_o have_v no_o hand_n in_o the_o sin_n itself_o be_v intimate_v to_o we_o in_o that_o passage_n of_o the_o we_o from_o temptation_n imply_v that_o though_o we_o be_v lead_v into_o temptation_n by_o god_n yet_o not_o into_o evil_n not_o into_o sin_n though_o he_o offer_v the_o temptation_n yet_o he_o only_o suffer_v the_o sin_n i_o speak_v nothing_o to_o the_o prejudice_n of_o god_n providence_n in_o dispose_v of_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o other_o occurrence_n for_o god_n may_v only_o permit_v the_o commission_n of_o sin_n and_o yet_o dispose_v of_o sin_n commit_v in_o subserviency_n to_o his_o own_o glory_n but_o to_o proceed_v from_o god_n permissive_a decree_n to_o his_o positive_a providence_n i_o believe_v it_o to_o have_v such_o a_o universal_a influence_n upon_o all_o the_o affair_n of_o the_o world_n that_o the_o most_o inconsiderable_a passage_n and_o occurrence_n be_v order_v and_o dispose_v thereby_o insomuch_o that_o not_o a_o hair_n can_v fall_v from_o our_o head_n or_o two_o sparrow_n light_a upon_o the_o ground_n without_o it_o concern_v the_o deal_n of_o god_n with_o angel_n and_o man_n angel_n angel_n which_o be_v of_o all_o other_o most_o remarkable_a i_o thus_o believe_v first_o as_o touch_v angel_n that_o they_o be_v all_o of_o they_o create_v by_o god_n pure_a and_o spotless_a spirit_n a_o order_n of_o be_v above_o man_n of_o a_o more_o noble_a and_o active_a constitution_n in_o which_o estate_n many_o of_o they_o yet_o continue_v and_o be_v probable_o confirm_v by_o christ_n therein_o be_v pure_a flame_n minister_a to_o he_o that_o be_v the_o consume_a fire_n as_o also_o pitch_v their_o tent_n about_o the_o godly_a and_o attend_v upon_o their_o good_a and_o safety_n but_o other_o of_o they_o through_o affectation_n as_o be_v conceive_v to_o have_v be_v equal_a with_o god_n fall_v down_o from_o heaven_n like_o lightning_n that_o be_v be_v force_v down_o from_o thence_o as_o fire_n which_o natural_o tend_v upward_o be_v when_o it_o lighten_v drive_v downward_o by_o the_o violence_n of_o the_o break_a cloud_n and_o that_o those_o who_o keep_v not_o their_o stand_n be_v reserve_v in_o chain_n of_o darkness_n to_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o great_a day_n god_n have_v make_v no_o provision_n for_o their_o recovery_n as_o he_o do_v for_o raise_v up_o the_o tabernacle_n of_o adam_n which_o be_v fall_v concern_v man_n the_o next_o creature_n to_o angel_n in_o point_n of_o dignity_n and_o excellency_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n speak_v in_o the_o word_n have_v thus_o persuade_v i_o man._n man._n namely_o that_o god_n at_o first_o do_v make_v he_o righteous_a stamp_v his_o own_o image_n upon_o he_o of_o our_o affection_n which_o be_v fix_v most_o when_o they_o shall_v be_v least_o or_o not_o at_o all_o and_o lest_o when_o they_o shall_v be_v most_o of_o all_o which_o also_o change_v their_o
