their_o fear_n their_o diligence_n more_o great_a in_o the_o begin_n of_o their_o conversion_n that_o as_o you_o hear_v before_o they_o may_v be_v well_o enter_v in_o the_o course_n of_o christianity_n and_o well_o buckle_v with_o all_o christian_a duty_n but_o many_o time_n afterward_o there_o will_v be_v a_o fall_v away_o from_o their_o first_o care_n and_o diligence_n even_o the_o wise_a virgin_n will_v slumber_v christ_n own_o spouse_n sleep_v when_o her_o heart_n wake_v but_o herein_o stand_v the_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o instability_n and_o inconstancy_n of_o the_o wicked_n desire_n and_o of_o the_o godlies'_n that_o the_o godly_a although_o they_o remit_v sometime_o somewhat_o of_o the_o degree_n of_o their_o desire_n and_o care_v this_o way_n yet_o do_v they_o never_o altogether_o return_v to_o their_o former_a security_n which_o they_o have_v before_o their_o waken_n and_o conversion_n they_o may_v fall_v from_o their_o first_o care_n and_o diligence_n but_o not_o from_o all_o care_n and_o diligence_n the_o wise_a virgin_n do_v slumber_n but_o be_v not_o dead_a the_o spouse_n sleep_v but_o her_o heart_n wake_v there_o will_v be_v ever_o something_a waken_n and_o stir_v the_o heart_n of_o god_n child_n whereas_o the_o wicked_a grow_v altogether_o as_o secure_v and_o sluggish_a yea_o more_o like_a water_n heat_v which_o grow_v cold_a than_o before_o this_o no_o doubt_n if_o you_o apply_v it_o to_o yourself_o will_v give_v you_o some_o resolution_n and_o comfort_n and_o thus_o far_o for_o this_o point_n 2._o now_o for_o the_o second_o point_n it_o be_v also_o true_a that_o the_o wicked_a and_o unregenerate_a may_v have_v a_o sight_n of_o their_o own_o corruption_n wickedness_n and_o sinfulness_n but_o it_o be_v also_o far_o from_o the_o degree_n and_o kind_n of_o that_o sight_n of_o sin_n and_o corruption_n which_o the_o regenerate_a and_o god_n own_o child_n have_v who_o have_v get_v the_o eyesalve_n the_o special_a illumination_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o be_v enlighten_v by_o that_o true_a light_n who_o lighten_v every_o man_n that_o come_v into_o the_o world_n they_o see_v more_o than_o flesh_n and_o blood_n can_v reveal_v unto_o they_o the_o difference_n may_v be_v especial_o see_v in_o these_o four_o particular_n 1._o the_o wicked_a and_o unregenerate_a although_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n or_o a_o general_a illumination_n they_o see_v some_o outward_a gross_a corruption_n corruption_n of_o their_o flesh_n as_o fornication_n murder_n etc._n etc._n yet_o see_v they_o not_o their_o inward_a secret_a corruption_n no_o less_o reign_v and_o rage_v in_o they_o and_o no_o less_o odious_a unto_o god_n their_o pride_n their_o hypocrisy_n their_o infidelity_n their_o impatience_n their_o spiritual_a idolatry_n and_o whore_v after_o the_o creature_n they_o see_v not_o the_o filthiness_n of_o the_o spirit_n 2_o cor._n 7._o 2._o although_o they_o see_v sin_n in_o the_o branch_n and_o fruit_n yet_o see_v they_o it_o not_o in_o the_o root_n and_o fountain_n they_o see_v not_o into_o that_o original_a corruption_n of_o their_o nature_n the_o blindness_n error_n and_o vanity_n of_o their_o mind_n the_o great_a averseness_n and_o rebellion_n of_o their_o will_n the_o inordinatenesse_n and_o earthliness_n of_o their_o affection_n the_o deadness_n of_o their_o conscience_n the_o hardness_n whore_v hypocrisy_n and_o desperate_a wickedness_n of_o their_o heart_n they_o see_v not_o that_o body_n of_o death_n rom._n 7.24_o 3._o they_o see_v not_o all_o their_o spiritual_a want_n but_o think_v themselves_o as_o be_v to_o be_v see_v in_o the_o church_n of_o laodicea_n to_o be_v rich_a and_o to_o have_v need_n of_o nothing_o to_o believe_v in_o christ_n as_o well_o as_o any_o to_o love_n god_n as_o well_o as_o any_o etc._n etc._n 4._o and_o last_o they_o see_v not_o the_o manifold_a imperfection_n of_o their_o best_a service_n but_o with_o the_o pharisee_fw-mi rest_n upon_o the_o bare_a outward_a performance_n not_o ponder_v their_o own_o heart_n nor_o consider_v that_o the_o lord_n ponder_v they_o the_o way_n of_o a_o man_n seem_v good_a in_o his_o own_o eye_n but_o the_o lord_n ponder_v the_o heart_n whereas_o the_o child_n of_o god_n on_o the_o contrary_n acknowledge_v all_o their_o righteousness_n to_o be_v but_o a_o menstruous_a cloth_n in_o a_o word_n the_o natural_a and_o unregenerate_a man_n light_n and_o sight_n of_o sin_n be_v but_o like_o a_o ordinary_a light_n whether_o candlelight_n or_o daylight_n while_o enter_v into_o a_o room_n will_v discover_v any_o great_a or_o gross_a filthiness_n whereas_o the_o light_n of_o the_o regenerate_a be_v like_o the_o light_n of_o the_o sunbeam_n which_o enter_v into_o a_o place_n discover_v the_o very_a small_a moat_n in_o it_o this_o be_v clear_o to_o be_v see_v in_o paul_n rom._n 7._o before_o his_o regeneration_n and_o the_o come_n in_o of_o the_o light_n of_o god_n spirit_n by_o the_o 7.13_o all_o which_o show_v that_o the_o contempt_n yea_o neglect_v of_o god_n word_n be_v not_o so_o small_a a_o sin_n as_o we_o apprehend_v it_o to_o be_v how_o then_o shall_v thou_o be_v humble_v make_v thy_o sin_n to_o be_v exceed_o sinful_a it_o be_v fearful_a to_o sin_n against_o the_o very_a light_n of_o nature_n as_o be_v clear_a by_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o lord_n wrath_n upon_o belshazzar_n dan._n 5._o and_o upon_o these_o rom._n 1._o they_o have_v but_o the_o very_a light_n of_o nature_n and_o yet_o because_o they_o abuse_v even_o but_o that_o light_n because_o when_o they_o know_v god_n they_o glorify_v he_o not_o as_o god_n neither_o be_v thankful_a therefore_o he_o give_v they_o over_o to_o a_o reprobate_a mind_n and_o far_o more_o fearful_a be_v it_o to_o sin_n against_o the_o light_n of_o the_o write_a law_n for_o that_o be_v a_o clear_a light_n and_o so_o we_o see_v the_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n be_v precise_o and_o peremptory_o punish_v every_o transgression_n receive_v a_o just_a recompense_n of_o reward_n but_o most_o fearful_a and_o sinful_a of_o all_o be_v it_o to_o sin_n against_o the_o most_o clear_a light_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o offer_n of_o salvation_n in_o it_o as_o be_v clear_a out_o of_o these_o two_o place_n heb._n 2.1_o heb._n 10.28_o 29._o and_o our_o saviour_n say_v plain_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v easy_a in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n even_o for_o sodom_n and_o gomorrah_n than_o it_o shall_v be_v for_o the_o neglecter_n of_o the_o gospel_n consider_v then_o how_o thou_o have_v sin_v in_o this_o last_o kind_n and_o so_o how_o great_a thy_o sin_n must_v be_v be_v the_o breaker_n of_o the_o law_n severe_o punish_v yea_o even_o those_o who_o have_v nothing_o but_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n o_o what_o deserve_v thou_o what_o need_n have_v thou_o to_o be_v humble_v that_o have_v sin_v against_o the_o high_a light_n if_o by_o humiliation_n thou_o do_v not_o prevent_v it_o it_o shall_v be_v more_o tolerable_a for_o sodom_n then_o for_o thou_o now_o the_o thing_n that_o make_v sin_n against_o the_o gospel_n to_o be_v so_o sinful_a be_v this_o because_o they_o be_v against_o not_o only_o the_o lord_n commandment_n but_o his_o most_o love_a entreaty_n and_o that_o by_o his_o tender_a mercy_n and_o the_o precious_a merit_n of_o his_o son_n and_o therefore_o notwithstanding_o these_o to_o disobey_v and_o so_o to_o despise_v the_o offer_n of_o grace_n be_v and_o must_v be_v exceed_o sinful_a for_o it_o be_v no_o less_o then_o as_o the_o apostle_n call_v it_o to_o neglect_v so_o great_a a_o salvation_n to_o tread_v under_o foot_n the_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o count_v the_o blood_n of_o the_o covenant_n a_o unholy_a thing_n for_o by_o the_o law_n the_o lord_n command_v we_o to_o exercise_v thou_o in_o prayer_n and_o in_o thy_o christian_a warfare_n be_v it_o not_o for_o this_o we_o will_v not_o so_o often_o and_o so_o full_o feel_v the_o necessity_n and_o sweetness_n of_o christ_n suffering_n intercession_n and_o righteousness_n we_o will_v not_o make_v so_o much_o of_o the_o sanctify_a subdue_a power_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n nor_o have_v so_o oft_o recourse_n unto_o it_o where_o will_v be_v the_o exercise_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o patience_n about_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o sanctification_n what_o will_v stir_v we_o up_o to_o another_o and_o yet_o neglect_v much_o want_n of_o compassion_n to_o the_o poor_a soul_n so_o their_o faith_n be_v ever_o work_v which_o clear_o cut_v off_o those_o who_o please_v themselves_o that_o they_o abstain_v from_o ill_a yea_o from_o some_o few_o gross_a ill_n that_o they_o be_v no_o thief_n murderer_n adulterer_n etc._n etc._n although_o they_o never_o do_v a_o good_a deed_n not_o salvation_n of_o thy_o soul_n thus_o far_o for_o these_o mark_n which_o be_v take_v from_o the_o antecedent_n of_o faith_n or_o those_o thing_n which_o go_v before_o faith_n at_o least_o in_o order_n of_o nature_n concern_v these_o three_o mark_n of_o a_o right_n and_o true_a work_n of_o humiliation_n or_o of_o that_o preparatorie_n work_v of_o the_o spirit_n which_o go_v before_o faith_n the_o way_n i_o say_v to_o make_v these_o mark_v clear_a comfortable_a and_o convince_a be_v 1._o to_o compare_v they_o with_o our_o own_o former_a case_n and_o condition_n and_o so_o to_o try_v they_o by_o experience_n which_o we_o have_v already_o do_v 2._o to_o try_v they_o by_o compare_v they_o with_o the_o case_n of_o the_o ungodly_a and_o wicked_a and_o so_o to_o try_v they_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o now_o we_o be_v to_o do_v wherein_o although_o some_o thing_n be_v coincident_a with_o thing_n speak_v before_o the_o labour_n will_v not_o be_v unprofitable_a i._o the_o first_o mark_n of_o right_a humiliation_n and_o of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o that_o respect_n be_v this_o to_o wit_n namely_o the_o right_a sight_n of_o sin_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n when_o he_o come_v first_o into_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a work_v by_o the_o law_n or_o commandment_n give_v unto_o a_o man_n another_o sight_n of_o sin_n than_o any_o natural_a man_n how_o qualify_v soever_o he_o be_v with_o humane_a literature_n and_o natural_a wisdom_n can_v have_v this_o be_v clear_o understand_v by_o the_o doctrine_n and_o in_o the_o person_n of_o st._n paul_n rom._n 7._o i_o be_v alive_a without_o the_o law_n once_o that_o be_v in_o a_o good_a conceit_n of_o myself_o and_o of_o my_o own_o righteousness_n but_o when_o the_o commandment_n come_v that_o be_v the_o spirit_n sight_n in_o he_o 1._o a_o sight_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o particular_a corruption_n 2._o of_o his_o gracelessness_n and_o want_n 3._o of_o his_o unrighteousness_n and_o imperfection_n of_o his_o best_a action_n now_o all_o these_o be_v hide_v from_o the_o natural_a man_n as_o be_v clear_a by_o example_n 1._o of_o the_o nation_n of_o the_o jew_n who_o go_v about_o to_o establish_v their_o own_o righteousness_n 2._o of_o the_o papist_n who_o take_v upon_o they_o for_o want_v of_o this_o sight_n to_o fulfil_v the_o law_n to_o merit_v to_o supererrogate_v 3._o of_o our_o own_o ignorance_n who_o till_o the_o point_n of_o death_n can_v be_v bring_v to_o this_o sight_n of_o their_o own_o sinfulness_n but_o ever_o be_v justify_v themselves_o thank_v god_n they_o never_o wrong_v any_o instead_o of_o confess_v and_o humble_v so_o that_o this_o be_v clear_o the_o case_n of_o the_o natural_a man_n but_o to_o the_o particular_n 1._o the_o spirit_n give_v to_o a_o man_n a_o sight_n of_o his_o sinfulness_n and_o corruption_n when_o the_o commandment_n come_v sin_n revive_v that_o be_v there_o be_v a_o further_a sight_n of_o sin_n hence_o be_v it_o that_o 1._o they_o be_v out_o of_o conceit_n of_o themselves_o think_v themselves_o to_o be_v the_o chief_a of_o sinner_n 2._o that_o they_o complain_v so_o heavy_o of_o their_o own_o corruption_n who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o the_o body_n of_o death_n 3._o they_o feel_v the_o flesh_n lust_a against_o the_o spirit_n gal._n 5._o now_o the_o ungodly_a or_o natural_a man_n be_v not_o so_o for_o 1._o he_o have_v not_o so_o evil_a a_o conceit_n of_o himself_o as_o to_o think_v himself_o to_o be_v the_o chief_a of_o sinner_n or_o a_o great_a sinner_n but_o quite_o contrary_a i_o thank_v god_n i_o be_o not_o like_o that_o publican_n 2._o he_o be_v not_o sensible_a of_o his_o sinfulness_n whether_o of_o the_o body_n of_o death_n or_o of_o his_o actual_a sin_n flow_v therefrom_o but_o on_o the_o contrary_a he_o flatter_v for_o thyself_o suppose_v that_o thou_o be_v sure_a of_o mercy_n and_o that_o thou_o have_v already_o obtain_v mercy_n yet_o thou_o have_v need_v nevertheless_o to_o humble_v thyself_o under_o the_o can_v the_o lord_n but_o have_v the_o like_a quarrel_n with_o thou_o as_o with_o they_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v think_v thou_o o_o man_n that_o do_v the_o same_o thing_n that_o thou_o shall_v escape_v the_o judgement_n of_o god_n how_o can_v thou_o think_v it_o unless_o thou_o think_v that_o thou_o have_v not_o to_o do_v with_o the_o same_o god_n or_o that_o he_o be_v change_v from_o say_v be_v very_o blasphemous_a be_v the_o lord_n so_o offend_v of_o old_a with_o the_o infidelity_n and_o with_o the_o impatiency_n and_o murmur_a and_o repine_v of_o his_o people_n and_o do_v he_o punish_v it_o so_o severe_o and_o shall_v thou_o for_o thy_o manifold_a delinquency_n notwithstanding_o thy_o bypass_a experience_n and_o thy_o frequent_a repine_v against_o the_o lord_n will_v escape_n unless_o thou_o repent_v it_o and_o humble_v thyself_o and_o amendi_fw-la do_v the_o lord_n punish_v so_o sharp_o nadah_n and_o abihu_n for_o profane_v his_o worship_n and_o offer_v up_o strange_a fire_n to_o he_o and_o not_o sanctify_v the_o lord_n when_o they_o come_v before_o he_o and_o near_o he_o and_o do_v not_o that_o same_o guiltiness_n lie_v upon_o thou_o and_o have_v not_o the_o lord_n the_o same_o quarrel_n with_o thou_o who_o so_o often_o have_v profane_v his_o worship_n with_o hypocrisy_n and_o sloth_n draw_v near_o to_o he_o with_o the_o lip_n but_o thy_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o he_o but_o set_v upon_o thy_o vanity_n and_o do_v his_o work_n negligent_o rush_v in_o before_o he_o without_o sanctify_v thyself_o when_o thou_o draw_v near_o he_o yea_o come_v with_o thy_o sin_n upon_o thou_o and_o so_o offer_v strange_a fire_n to_o he_o many_o way_n shall_v not_o the_o lord_n punish_v thou_o also_o unless_o thou_o humble_v thyself_o and_o amend_v 3._o do_v the_o lord_n so_o peremptory_o punish_v the_o man_n who_o blaspheme_v his_o name_n make_v he_o to_o be_v stone_v to_o death_n and_o shall_v thou_o who_o have_v so_o often_o blaspheme_v the_o holy_a and_o dreadful_a name_n of_o the_o lord_n thy_o god_n think_v that_o the_o lord_n
covenant_n of_o reconciliation_n even_o he_o shall_v intercede_v for_o he_o that_o he_o be_v not_o cast_v out_o of_o it_o again_o jesus_n christ_n our_o saviour_n be_v the_o mediator_n of_o the_o everlasting_a a_o covenant_n this_o point_n be_v also_o notable_o and_o clear_o set_v down_o and_o make_v good_a by_o that_o style_n that_o daniel_n nehemiah_n ezra_n give_v unto_o god_n o_o lord_n who_o keep_v covenant_n and_o mercy_n a_o sweet_a say_n and_o style_n for_o both_o on_o his_o own_o part_n he_o keep_v covenant_n and_o then_o for_o we_o when_o we_o break_v and_o sin_n he_o have_v mercy_n for_o we_o so_o in_o the_o scripture_n we_o have_v it_o more_o than_o once_o that_o sweet_a combination_n of_o mercy_n and_o truth_n psal_n 57_o he_o will_v send_v out_o his_o mercy_n and_o his_o truth_n psal_n 25._o all_o his_o way_n be_v mercy_n and_o truth_n etc._n etc._n his_o truth_n be_v to_o perform_v his_o promise_n his_o mercy_n be_v to_o cover_v our_o sin_n and_o to_o pardon_v they_o that_o they_o be_v no_o impediment_n for_o he_o to_o perform_v his_o mercy_n towards_o we_o have_v he_o only_a truth_n our_o comfort_n will_v be_v but_o small_a for_o we_o make_v the_o first_o breach_n and_o fail_v in_o the_o condition_n so_o that_o the_o lord_n may_v without_o any_o breach_n of_o his_o truth_n and_o justice_n break_v his_o promise_n with_o we_o but_o when_o he_o join_v mercy_n with_o truth_n and_o be_v a_o god_n that_o keep_v covenant_n and_o mercy_n in_o this_o stand_v our_o comfort_n and_o happiness_n and_o this_o be_v it_o that_o make_v it_o a_o everlasting_a covenant_n as_o also_o in_o that_o notable_a psal_n 89._o my_o faithfulness_n and_o my_o mercy_n shall_v be_v with_o he_o and_o again_o notable_o v._o 28._o my_o mercy_n will_v i_o keep_v for_o he_o for_o evermore_o and_o my_o covenant_n shall_v stand_v fast_o with_o he_o his_o mercy_n endure_v for_o ever_o how_o often_o repeat_v in_o scripture_n a_o notable_a comfort_n against_o our_o renew_a sin_n but_o of_o all_o most_o notable_o clear_o and_o express_o be_v this_o sureness_n and_o everlastingness_n of_o the_o covenant_n set_v down_o in_o that_o same_o psalm_n where_o the_o lord_n steadfastnesse_n of_o the_o covenant_n be_v ready_a to_o fast_a security_n and_o to_o prove_v a_o obstruction_n to_o christian_a obedience_n a._n it_o may_v well_o make_v one_o relent_v of_o that_o slavish_a or_o at_o the_o best_a selfish_n obedience_n flow_v from_o fear_n and_o arise_v from_o self-love_n and_o self-respect_n but_o as_o for_o that_o acceptable_a obedience_n which_o flow_v from_o faith_n and_o from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n the_o love_n of_o god_n constrain_v i_o sure_o it_o do_v great_o advance_v and_o fortify_v it_o for_o why_o as_o you_o see_v it_o fortify_v indeed_o exceed_o this_o point_n of_o the_o sureness_n of_o the_o covenant_n and_o everlastingness_n on_o god_n part_n now_o faith_n produce_v this_o acceptable_a obedience_n faith_n which_o work_v by_o love_n the_o more_o faith_n the_o more_o work_v and_o that_o by_o love_n the_o more_o hearty_a and_o cheerful_a obedience_n so_o whatsoever_o doctrine_n serve_v to_o increase_v faith_n in_o we_o to_o breed_v in_o we_o the_o full_a assurance_n of_o faith_n be_v so_o far_o from_o render_v we_o carnal_o secure_a and_o so_o sluggish_a as_o on_o the_o contrary_a it_o render_v we_o spiritual_o secure_a it_o make_v we_o the_o more_o work_v and_o diligent_a it_o add_v spirit_n and_o life_n heart_n and_o courage_n to_o work_v faith_n which_o work_v by_o love_n it_o both_o increase_v and_o rectify_v our_o obedience_n whereas_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o tree_n be_v weak_a good_a work_n which_o be_v the_o fruit_n must_v be_v few_o as_o the_o assurance_n of_o faith_n rouse_v up_o the_o soul_n to_o go_v on_o in_o a_o cheerful_a and_o right_a course_n of_o obedience_n with_o a_o eye_n to_o god_n whereas_o otherwise_o all_o our_o obedience_n be_v at_o the_o best_a felfish_n if_o not_o slavish_a do_v you_o fast_o unto_o i_o say_v the_o lord_n and_o even_o for_o this_o restraint_n of_o fear_n to_o stand_v in_o awe_n and_o not_o to_o sin_v this_o covenant_n for_o all_o the_o sweetness_n of_o it_o have_v sufficient_a ground_n for_o as_o you_o hear_v although_o the_o lord_n for_o the_o main_n take_v not_o his_o love_a kindness_n away_o yet_o nevertheless_o he_o visit_v with_o the_o rod_n and_o with_o stripe_n even_o with_o sad_a and_o sore_a chastisement_n even_o where_o he_o be_v favourable_a he_o take_v for_o all_o that_o vengeance_n for_o transgression_n even_o where_o he_o correct_v in_o measure_n he_o suffer_v not_o altogether_o to_o pass_v unpunished_a hence_o be_v that_o complaint_n thou_o have_v wound_v i_o with_o the_o wound_n of_o a_o enemy_n and_o chastise_v i_o with_o the_o chastisement_n of_o a_o cruel_a one_o and_o again_o the_o lord_n have_v chastise_v i_o sore_o but_o have_v not_o deliver_v i_o over_o to_o death_n there_o be_v never_o so_o much_o pleasure_n in_o thy_o sin_v as_o thou_o who_o ever_o thou_o be_v shall_v find_v bitterness_n in_o thy_o chastisement_n for_o sin_n even_o although_o the_o main_a thing_n and_o the_o punishment_n be_v remit_v so_o that_o thou_o have_v need_v to_o stand_v in_o awe_n and_o not_o sin_n so_o that_o this_o covenant_n though_o full_a of_o confidence_n yet_o have_v some_o place_n also_o for_o fear_n and_o awe_n obj._n when_o i_o consider_v this_o sureness_n and_o everlastingness_n of_o the_o covenant_n sure_o i_o must_v think_v they_o happy_a that_o have_v propriety_n and_o interest_n in_o it_o but_o i_o fear_v that_o i_o have_v none_o that_o it_o belong_v not_o
