most_o ease_n convenience_n and_o safety_n to_o ourselves_o this_o prudence_n look_v at_o in_o all_o our_o way_n whether_o the_o discharge_v of_o duty_n or_o any_o other_o that_o be_v free_a and_o leave_v to_o ourselves_o and_o this_o prudence_n christianity_n must_v moderate_v that_o our_o care_n for_o our_o safety_n neveâ—_n carry_v we_o against_o or_o make_v we_o careless_a of_o our_o duty_n convenience_n as_o the_o omission_n of_o circumcision_n be_v connive_v at_o for_o the_o extreme_a burdensomness_n thereof_o whilst_o they_o be_v in_o a_o travel_a state_n in_o the_o wilderness_n but_o natural_a or_o moral_a obligation_n be_v not_o to_o give_v way_n to_o any_o outward_a convenience_n in_o case_n of_o these_o spiritual_a prudence_n be_v not_o for_o do_v a_o spiritual_a ill_n for_o any_o worldly_a good_a it_o will_v rather_o suffer_v any_o ill_a than_o do_v it_o it_o get_v by_o the_o ill_a it_o suffer_v if_o it_o can_v suffer_v with_o patience_n and_o innocence_n but_o it_o always_o lose_v by_o the_o ill_a it_o do_v though_o it_o get_v a_o worldly_a convenience_n it_o part_n with_o what_o be_v incomparable_o better_a its_o integrity_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n it_o will_v never_o yield_v to_o commit_v a_o sin_n no_o not_o for_o the_o worldly_a convenience_n of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n and_o religion_n not_o own_v that_o corrupt_a and_o ungodly_a maxim_n of_o break_v religion_n to_o preserve_v religion_n be_v wise_a as_o serpent_n but_o simple_a and_o innocent_a as_o dove_n say_v our_o saviour_n mat._n 10.16_o that_o be_v say_v a_o chrysâ—st_n old_a and_o the_o general_n effect_v of_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o in_o their_o necessity_n offer_v itself_o and_o too_o oft_o god_n know_v with_o overmuch_o success_n to_o all_o that_o have_v fleshly_a nature_n and_o be_v not_o confine_v to_o any_o sect_n or_o party_n they_o that_o will_v blame_v it_o when_o they_o do_v not_o need_v it_o and_o cry_v out_o of_o it_o in_o other_o be_v ready_a alas_o most_o shameful_o many_o time_n to_o justify_v it_o in_o their_o need_n and_o practice_v by_o it_o themselves_o but_o when_o they_o do_v thus_o it_o be_v only_o at_o the_o incitation_n proprietor_n and_o how_o will_v it_o dispossess_v the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o the_o earth_n yea_o particular_o of_o those_o who_o be_v most_o uneasy_a and_o cast_v the_o most_o envious_a and_o malignant_a eye_n at_o the_o power_n and_o property_n of_o other_o so_o that_o it_o will_v quite_o throw_v out_o this_o pretence_n of_o discharge_v ourselves_o of_o relative_n duty_n or_o disseise_v relative_n of_o their_o legal_a right_n and_o claim_n because_o of_o heresy_n non-performance_n etc._n etc._n i._n e._n of_o ungraciousness_n if_o man_n will_v but_o allow_v their_o relative_n and_o ruler_n common_a justice_n who_o if_o any_o â—ure_n shall_v have_v preference_n and_o do_v by_o they_o as_o they_o will_v be_v willing_a to_o be_v deal_v by_o themselves_o honour_n thy_o father_n and_o mother_n and_o thou_o shall_v not_o steal_v be_v precept_n universal_a secure_v the_o power_n and_o property_n of_o the_o graceless_a as_o much_o as_o of_o the_o gracious_a just_o therefore_o we_o must_v be_v to_o power_n and_o property_n wheresoever_o we_o meet_v it_o lodge_v by_o law_n whether_o in_o the_o good_a or_o bad_a and_o thus_o just_a we_o shall_v be_v to_o the_o arbitrary_a and_o lawless_a as_o if_o there_o can_v be_v no_o duty_n to_o his_o power_n and_o person_n without_o inclination_n to_o his_o way_n and_o religion_n what_o will_v these_o person_n have_v say_v to_o st._n paul_n and_o the_o holy_a apostle_n have_v they_o live_v in_o those_o day_n will_v they_o have_v accuse_v they_o as_o secret_a friend_n to_o heathenism_n and_o as_o have_v heathen_a god_n as_o now_o they_o be_v wont_n to_o say_v of_o other_o that_o they_o have_v a_o pope_n in_o their_o belly_n because_o they_o preach_v up_o a_o strict_a and_o inviolate_a subjection_n to_o the_o emperor_n and_o other_o power_n for_o all_o they_o be_v heathen_n or_o that_o they_o be_v enemy_n and_o betrayer_n of_o the_o roman_a liberty_n and_o for_o make_v the_o empire_n more_o absolute_a than_o it_o be_v because_o those_o emperor_n be_v for_o grasp_a at_o the_o small_a remain_v of_o liberty_n and_o for_o be_v more_o and_o more_o lawless_a their_o duty_n as_o i_o have_v show_v they_o must_v perform_v to_o they_o and_o do_v all_o that_o be_v just_a to_o such_o a_o one_o both_o as_o a_o man_n and_o a_o king_n in_o duty_n to_o his_o person_n and_o relation_n though_o at_o the_o same_o time_n they_o bear_v the_o most_o unmoveable_a averseness_n and_o opposition_n stand_v out_o to_o the_o last_o in_o such_o way_n as_o their_o duty_n to_o god_n and_o he_o allow_v they_o to_o make_v use_n of_o against_o his_o way_n and_o religious_a persuasion_n it_o be_v only_o in_o conscience_n of_o what_o he_o be_v not_o in_o good_a like_n or_o approbation_n of_o what_o he_o do_v that_o they_o pay_v these_o thing_n to_o such_o a_o person_n i_o note_v also_o that_o in_o speak_v of_o these_o duty_n even_o in_o the_o case_n of_o such_o person_n we_o must_v not_o talk_v as_o if_o we_o perform_v they_o not_o from_o principle_n of_o conscience_n but_o only_o from_o humane_a inducement_n it_o be_v the_o way_n of_o too_o many_o god_n know_v to_o discourse_v in_o these_o thing_n as_o if_o the_o thank_v these_o duty_n have_v on_o we_o towards_o such_o unpleasing_a relative_n be_v not_o on_o our_o conscience_n but_o on_o our_o convenience_n their_o care_n and_o good_a carriage_n they_o will_v allow_v as_o a_o reason_n of_o our_o duty_n and_o observance_n but_o their_o fault_n and_o failure_n as_o a_o reason_n also_o to_o justify_v we_o they_o insist_v upon_o reason_n of_o ingenuity_n in_o this_o case_n and_o ask_v how_o one_o can_v expect_v more_o that_o perform_v no_o more_o or_o deal_v no_o better_o and_o look_v on_o the_o rip_v up_o their_o ruler_n non-performance_n as_o a_o reason_n to_o vindicate_v their_o own_o all_o which_o be_v as_o if_o god_n have_v require_v nothing_o in_o the_o relation_n but_o all_o we_o owe_v be_v to_o the_o carriage_n of_o the_o person_n it_o be_v to_o act_v only_o by_o principle_n of_o interest_n or_o at_o best_o of_o ingenuity_n but_o not_o out_o of_o principle_n of_o conscience_n which_o be_v the_o same_o when_o they_o go_v wrong_a and_o when_o they_o go_v right_a or_o not_o from_o any_o regard_n to_o god_n or_o sense_n of_o duty_n at_o all_o chap._n viii_o of_o the_o imprudence_n of_o pursue_v our_o end_n by_o unlawful_a mean_n have_v say_v thus_o much_o of_o this_o first_o rule_n of_o spiritual_a wisdom_n viz._n not_o do_v evil_a that_o good_a may_v come_v or_o not_o make_v use_n of_o any_o unlawful_a way_n for_o the_o compass_v our_o end_n or_o desire_v beside_o what_o i_o have_v hitherto_o say_v of_o the_o religion_n i_o will_v now_o add_v a_o little_a in_o the_o last_o place_n of_o the_o wisdom_n of_o this_o course_n and_o show_v how_o prudent_a it_o be_v never_o to_o take_v up_o with_o any_o sin_n in_o pursuit_n the_o most_o desire_a design_n prudent_a i_o mean_v not_o only_o for_o the_o next_o world_n but_o for_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o our_o design_n here_o in_o this_o if_o worldly_a man_n will_v real_o be_v wise_a for_o worldly_a thing_n and_o take_v the_o way_n that_o be_v best_a here_o at_o present_a they_o must_v not_o sin_v against_o god_n to_o bring_v their_o end_n about_o which_o however_o promise_v it_o may_v seem_v to_o they_o be_v not_o real_o the_o way_n to_o make_v but_o to_o mar_v they_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o be_v because_o the_o compass_n of_o any_o effect_n depend_v more_o upon_o god_n and_o his_o providence_n than_o on_o any_o humane_a mean_n the_o best_a and_o likely_a preparation_n can_v never_o bring_v they_o about_o when_o he_o go_v not_o along_o with_o they_o and_o the_o low_a and_o most_o unlikely_a be_v sure_a to_o do_v it_o when_o he_o do_v now_o the_o way_n to_o have_v god_n with_o we_o be_v by_o trust_v he_o and_o keep_v in_o his_o way_n if_o we_o dare_v rely_v on_o providence_n and_o trust_v god_n he_o will_v not_o fail_v those_o that_o trust_v he_o but_o take_v the_o tender_a care_n of_o they_o and_o show_v himself_o remarkable_o in_o preserve_v and_o speed_v their_o matter_n on_o i_o mean_v those_o matter_n which_o in_o consistence_n with_o the_o design_n of_o his_o providence_n he_o see_v fit_a to_o take_v effect_n and_o no_o mean_n or_o method_n can_v bring_v about_o any_o thing_n else_o as_o
end_n and_o way_n be_v likewise_o necessary_a requisite_n of_o prudence_n which_o be_v not_o only_o for_o do_v a_o good_a thing_n but_o for_o do_v it_o well_o and_o wise_o and_o christianity_n be_v about_o any_o business_n and_o as_o the_o prudence_n of_o worldly_a man_n be_v show_v in_o take_v their_o best_a opportunity_n for_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n so_o must_v the_o prudence_n of_o christian_n be_v show_v in_o a_o commodious_a time_v and_o watch_v the_o most_o advantageous_a season_n for_o what_o they_o do_v in_o care_n of_o their_o soul_n and_o in_o service_n or_o honour_n of_o christ_n jesus_n but_o here_o care_n must_v be_v take_v in_o determine_v what_o be_v good_a season_n for_o religious_a action_n either_o profession_n of_o some_o point_n of_o faith_n or_o practice_n of_o some_o duty_n of_o this_o there_o be_v the_o more_o danger_n because_o religion_n say_v one_o thing_n and_o flesh_n and_o blood_n another_o in_o this_o matter_n so_o that_o when_o spiritual_a prudence_n that_o mind_n religion_n say_v one_o time_n be_v a_o good_a season_n for_o such_o a_o profession_n or_o practice_n worldly_a prudence_n that_o mind_v outward_a ease_n will_v often_o â—ry_v they_o be_v most_o unseasonable_a but_o christian_a prudence_n must_v not_o take_v its_o season_n from_o the_o serviceableness_n of_o any_o duty_n to_o worldly_a purpose_n but_o to_o its_o own_o ends._n to_o prevent_v our_o set_n aside_o any_o duty_n as_o out_o of_o season_n at_o the_o suggestion_n of_o carnal_a wisdom_n when_o indeed_o we_o have_v a_o oblige_a call_v and_o season_n to_o discharge_v they_o i_o shall_v note_v these_o thing_n follow_v 1._o first_o in_o determine_v the_o seasonableness_n or_o unseasonableness_n of_o profess_v any_o necessary_a truth_n of_o christ_n or_o look_v upon_o as_o a_o most_o unreasonable_a and_o unskilful_a miss-timing_a of_o thing_n as_o bad_a as_o to_o come_v to_o the_o tree_n to_o gather_v fruit_n in_o the_o spring_n ere_o it_o be_v put_v forth_o or_o in_o the_o depth_n of_o winter_n when_o both_o fruit_n and_o leave_n be_v fall_v off_o long_o before_o the_o only_a season_n it_o own_v of_o do_v they_o be_v when_o it_o be_v like_a to_o do_v itself_o no_o worldly_a hurt_n thereby_o but_o when_o they_o bring_v suffer_v it_o cry_v out_o this_o be_v no_o time_n to_o talk_v of_o they_o but_o this_o be_v to_o rate_v the_o season_n for_o spiritual_a duty_n not_o by_o end_n of_o virtue_n and_o religion_n or_o the_o advancement_n and_o honour_n thereof_o which_o be_v spiritual_a consideration_n but_o only_o by_o present_a interest_n and_o security_n which_o be_v worldly_a motive_n and_o lie_v ever_o close_a to_o a_o worldly_a mind_n it_o be_v to_o make_v the_o duty_n of_o our_o religion_n not_o to_o be_v duty_n at_o all_o time_n as_o if_o the_o truth_n thereof_o be_v not_o to_o be_v profess_v or_o the_o law_n practise_v when_o we_o be_v call_v to_o suffer_v but_o only_o when_o in_o worldly_a account_n we_o be_v like_a to_o get_v or_o at_o least_o to_o save_v by_o they_o but_o these_o man_n never_o consider_v that_o christianity_n as_o i_o observe_v before_o be_v a_o doctrine_n of_o the_o cross_n or_o a_o suffer_a religion_n all_o the_o truth_n whereof_o be_v publish_v and_o its_o duty_n prescribe_v not_o for_o a_o thrive_a but_o for_o a_o suffer_a time_n instead_o of_o except_v they_o it_o be_v calculate_v for_o day_n of_o persecution_n since_o in_o such_o it_o enter_v and_o begin_v in_o such_o it_o get_v foot_v and_o daily_o maintain_v and_o enlarge_v what_o it_o have_v get_v among_o man_n all_o its_o get_v heaven_n thereby_o though_o it_o be_v no_o season_n to_o serve_v flesh_n and_o blood_n it_o be_v the_o proper_a season_n to_o serve_v truth_n and_o virtue_n which_o be_v then_o most_o especial_o to_o be_v defend_v by_o we_o when_o other_o attack_v they_o and_o to_o be_v own_a by_o their_o steadfast_a friend_n when_o their_o enemy_n explode_v and_o their_o own_o dependent_n be_v ready_a to_o desert_n they_o and_o these_o be_v the_o end_v of_o spiritual_a prudence_n instead_o of_o esteem_v persecution_n which_o conduce_v so_o much_o thereto_o as_o unseasonable_a for_o christian_a duty_n it_o account_v they_o as_o i_o have_v before_o show_v the_o most_o oblige_a and_o advantageous_a season_n 2._o second_o we_o must_v not_o say_v there_o be_v no_o season_n for_o christian_a duty_n when_o there_o be_v no_o worldly_a appearance_n of_o do_v good_a by_o discharge_v they_o this_o be_v usual_o take_v up_o by_o worldly_a wisdom_n when_o any_o necessary_a truth_n or_o virtue_n be_v away_o all_o before_o it_o this_o they_o think_v be_v only_o to_o destroy_v themselves_o without_o do_v their_o duty_n any_o good_a which_o however_o it_o may_v be_v pitiable_a as_o well_o intend_v yet_o say_v they_o be_v not_o commendable_a as_o be_v a_o service_n altogether_o miss-timed_n and_o most_o imprudent_a but_o here_o man_n shall_v consider_v that_o their_o obligation_n to_o profess_v
