our_o state_n be_v most_o certain_o dangerous_a for_o such_o be_v under_o the_o law_n and_o the_o law_n have_v conclude_v all_o under_o wrath._n if_o we_o be_v not_o under_o sin_n be_v dominion_n we_o be_v in_o a_o bless_a and_o happy_a estate_n be_v under_o grace_n for_o these_o two_o dominion_n divide_v the_o world_n and_o every_o son_n and_o daughter_n of_o adam_n be_v under_o one_o or_o the_o other_o and_o none_o can_v be_v under_o both_o at_o the_o same_o time_n now_o our_o be_v under_o grace_n can_v be_v no_o way_n better_o evidence_v than_o by_o our_o be_v in_o christ_n by_o faith_n for_o he_o that_o be_v so_o be_v a_o new_a creature_n be_v pass_v from_o death_n to_o life_n will_v still_o be_v mortify_v sin_n the_o strong_a man_n in_o sin_n be_v dominion_n be_v cast_v out_o and_o attain_v not_o unto_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n wherefore_o because_o they_o seek_v it_o not_o by_o faith_n but_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n for_o they_o stumble_v at_o have_v find_v it_o so_o at_o least_o in_o their_o own_o apprehension_n they_o have_v be_v ready_a to_o say_v at_o one_o time_n or_o another_o we_o shall_v one_o day_n fall_v by_o the_o hand_n of_o this_o enemy_n and_o have_v be_v force_v to_o cry_v out_o unto_o jesus_n christ_n for_o help_n and_o succour_v with_o no_o less_o vehemency_n than_o the_o disciple_n do_v at_o sea_n when_o the_o sovereign_a authority_n when_o he_o rebuke_v the_o wind_n and_o the_o sea_n and_o there_o be_v a_o great_a calm_a this_o dominion_n of_o sin_n be_v that_o which_o we_o have_v here_o security_n give_v we_o against_o though_o it_o will_v abide_v in_o we_o though_o it_o will_v contend_v for_o rule_n by_o deceit_n and_o force_n yet_o it_o shall_v not_o prevail_v it_o shall_v not_o have_v the_o dominion_n and_o this_o be_v a_o case_n of_o the_o high_a importance_n unto_o we_o our_o soul_n be_v and_o must_v be_v under_o the_o rule_n of_o some_o principle_n or_o law._n and_o from_o this_o rule_n our_o state_n be_v determine_v and_o denominate_v we_o be_v either_o servant_n of_o sin_n unto_o death_n or_o of_o obedience_n unto_o righteousness_n rom._n vi_fw-la 16._o this_o be_v the_o substance_n of_o the_o discourse_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o that_o whole_a chapter_n namely_o that_o the_o state_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o unto_o life_n and_o death_n eternal_a follow_v the_o acceptation_n with_o god._n chap._n ii_o the_o inquiry_n for_o understand_v the_o text_n propose_v the_o first_o speak_v to_o viz._n what_o be_v the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n which_o we_o be_v free_v from_o and_o discharge_v of_o by_o grace_n we_o shall_v inquire_v into_o three_o thing_n from_o the_o word_n of_o this_o text._n i._o what_o be_v that_o dominion_n of_o sin_n which_o we_o be_v free_v from_o and_o discharge_v of_o by_o grace_n ii_o how_o we_o may_v know_v whether_o sin_n have_v the_o dominion_n in_o we_o or_o no._n iii_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n and_o evidence_n of_o the_o assurance_n here_o give_v we_o that_o sin_n shall_v not_o have_v dominion_n over_o we_o namely_o because_o we_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o grace_n 1._o as_o unto_o the_o first_o of_o these_o i_o shall_v only_o recount_v some_o such_o property_n of_o it_o as_o will_v discover_v its_o nature_n in_o general_a the_o particular_n wherein_o it_o do_v consist_v will_v be_v consider_v afterward_o 1._o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n be_v perverse_a and_o evil_a and_o that_o on_o both_o the_o account_n which_o render_v any_o rule_n or_o dominion_n so_o to_o be_v for_o 1._o it_o be_v usurp_v sin_n have_v no_o right_a to_o rule_v in_o the_o soul_n of_o men._n man_n have_v no_o power_n to_o give_v sin_n a_o right_a to_o rule_v over_o they_o they_o may_v voluntary_o enslave_v themselves_o unto_o it_o but_o this_o give_v sin_n no_o right_a or_o title_n all_o man_n have_v original_o another_o lord_n unto_o who_o they_o owe_v all_o obedience_n nor_o can_v any_o thing_n discharge_v they_o from_o their_o allegiance_n thereunto_o and_o this_o be_v the_o law_n of_o god._n the_o apostle_n say_v indeed_o that_o unto_o who_o man_n yield_v themselves_o servant_n to_o obey_v his_o servant_n they_o be_v to_o who_o they_o obey_v whether_o of_o sin_n unto_o death_n or_o of_o obedience_n unto_o righteousness_n v_o 19_o and_o so_o it_o be_v man_n be_v thereby_o the_o proper_a servant_n of_o sin_n they_o become_v so_o by_o their_o own_o voluntary_a subjection_n unto_o it_o but_o this_o give_v sin_n no_o title_n against_o the_o law_n of_o god_n who_o right_a alone_a it_o be_v to_o bear_v sway_n in_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n for_o all_o that_o give_v up_o themselves_o to_o the_o service_n of_o sin_n do_v live_v in_o actual_a rebellion_n against_o their_o natural_a liege_n lord._n hence_o sundry_a thing_n do_v follow_v first_o the_o great_a aggravation_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o a_o state_n of_o sin._n man_n who_o live_v therein_o do_v voluntary_o wrest_v themselves_o what_o lie_v in_o they_o from_o under_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o give_v up_o themselves_o to_o be_v slave_n unto_o this_o tyrant_n can_v it_o lay_v any_o claim_n to_o this_o dominion_n have_v it_o any_o title_n to_o plead_v it_o be_v some_o alleviation_n of_o gild_n in_o they_o that_o give_v up_o themselves_o unto_o it_o but_o man_n yield_v up_o themselves_o to_o the_o slavery_n of_o sin_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v they_o reject_v the_o rule_n of_o god_n law_n and_o choose_v this_o foreign_a yoke_n which_o can_v but_o be_v a_o aggravation_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o misery_n yet_o so_o it_o be_v that_o the_o great_a part_n of_o man_n do_v visible_o and_o open_o profess_v themselves_o the_o servant_n and_o slave_n of_o sin._n they_o wear_v its_o livery_n and_o do_v all_o its_o drudgery_n yea_o they_o boast_v themselves_o in_o their_o bondage_n and_o never_o think_v themselves_o so_o brave_a and_o gallant_a as_o when_o by_o profane_a swear_v drunkenness_n uncleanness_n covetousness_n and_o scoff_v at_o religion_n they_o open_o disavow_v the_o lord_n who_o they_o serve_v the_o master_n to_o who_o they_o do_v belong_v but_o their_o damnation_n sleep_v not_o whatever_o they_o may_v dream_v in_o the_o mean_a time_n 2._o hence_o it_o follow_v that_o ordinary_o all_o man_n have_v a_o right_n in_o themselves_o to_o cast_v off_o the_o rule_n of_o sin_n and_o to_o vindicate_v themselves_o into_o liberty_n they_o may_v when_o they_o will_v plead_v the_o right_n and_o title_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n unto_o the_o rule_n of_o their_o soul_n to_o the_o utter_a exclusion_n of_o all_o plea_n and_o pretence_n of_o sin_n for_o its_o power_n they_o have_v right_o to_o say_v unto_o it_o get_v thou_o hence_o what_o have_v i_o to_o do_v any_o more_o with_o idol_n all_o man_n i_o say_v have_v this_o right_n in_o themselves_o because_o of_o the_o natural_a allegiance_n they_o owe_v to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n but_o they_o have_v not_o power_n of_o themselves_o to_o execute_v this_o right_n and_o actual_o to_o cast_v off_o the_o yoke_n of_o sin_n but_o this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n sin_n be_v dominion_n be_v break_v only_o by_o grace_n but_o you_o will_v say_v then_o unto_o what_o end_n serve_v this_o right_a if_o they_o have_v not_o power_n in_o themselves_o to_o put_v it_o in_o execution_n and_o how_o can_v it_o be_v charge_v as_o a_o aggravation_n of_o their_o sin_n that_o they_o do_v not_o use_v the_o right_n which_o they_o have_v see_v they_o have_v no_o power_n so_o to_o do_v will_v you_o blame_v a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o right_a to_o a_o estate_n if_o he_o do_v not_o recover_v it_o when_o he_o have_v no_o mean_n so_o to_o do_v i_o answer_v brief_o three_o thing_n one_a no_o man_n live_v neglect_v the_o use_n of_o this_o right_n to_o cast_v off_o the_o yoke_n and_o dominion_n of_o sin_n because_o he_o can_v of_o himself_o make_v use_v of_o it_o but_o mere_o because_o he_o will_v not_o he_o do_v voluntary_o choose_v to_o continue_v under_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n and_o look_n on_o every_o thing_n as_o his_o enemy_n that_o will_v deliver_v he_o the_o carnal_a mind_n be_v enmity_n against_o god_n it_o be_v not_o subject_a unto_o his_o law_n nor_o can_v it_o be_v rom._n viij_o 7._o when_o the_o law_n come_v at_o any_o time_n to_o claim_v its_o right_n and_o rule_v over_o the_o soul_n a_o man_n under_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n look_v on_o it_o as_o his_o enemy_n that_o come_v to_o disturb_v his_o peace_n and_o fortify_v his_o mind_n against_o it_o and_o when_o the_o gospel_n come_v and_o tender_v the_o way_n and_o mean_n for_o the_o soul_n delivery_n offer_v its_o aid_n and_o assistance_n unto_o that_o end_n this_o also_o be_v look_v on_o as_o a_o enemy_n and_o be_v reject_v and_o all_o
by_o his_o actual_a adultery_n but_o of_o his_o heart_n by_o impure_a imagination_n so_o it_o may_v be_v in_o case_n of_o other_o temptation_n whilst_o man_n be_v entangle_v with_o any_o temptation_n of_o what_o sort_n soever_o it_o be_v it_o will_v multiply_v thought_n about_o it_o in_o the_o mind_n yea_o its_o whole_a power_n consist_v in_o a_o multiplication_n of_o evil_a imagination_n by_o they_o it_o blind_v the_o mind_n draw_v it_o off_o from_o the_o consideration_n of_o its_o duty_n and_o entice_v it_o unto_o a_o full_a conception_n of_o sin_n jam._n i._n 14._o wherefore_o in_o this_o case_n of_o a_o prevalent_a temptation_n which_o may_v befall_v a_o true_a believer_n the_o corrupt_a work_n of_o the_o imagination_n do_v not_o prove_v the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n if_o it_o be_v inquire_v how_o the_o mind_n may_v be_v free_v and_o clear_v of_o these_o perplex_v defile_v imagination_n which_o arise_v from_o the_o urgency_n of_o some_o present_a temptation_n suppose_v about_o earthly_a affair_n or_o the_o like_a i_o say_v it_o will_v never_o be_v do_v by_o the_o most_o strict_a watch_n and_o resolution_n against_o they_o nor_o by_o the_o most_o resolute_a rejection_n of_o they_o they_o will_v return_v with_o new_a violence_n and_o new_a pretence_n though_o the_o soul_n have_v promise_v itself_o a_o thousand_o time_n that_o so_o they_o shall_v not_o do_v there_o be_v but_o one_o way_n for_o the_o cure_n of_o this_o distemper_n and_o this_o be_v a_o thorough_a mortification_n of_o the_o lust_n that_o feed_v they_o and_o be_v feed_v by_o they_o it_o be_v to_o no_o purpose_n to_o shake_v of_o the_o fruit_n in_o this_o case_n unless_o we_o dig_v up_o the_o root_n every_o temptation_n design_n the_o satisfaction_n of_o some_o lust_n of_o the_o opposition_n unto_o the_o thing_n above_o that_o be_v that_o we_o will_v not_o fill_v our_o imagination_n and_o thereby_o our_o affection_n with_o they_o but_o what_o be_v the_o way_n whereby_o we_o may_v be_v enable_v so_o to_o do_v that_o be_v say_v he_o the_o universal_a mortification_n of_o sin_n v_o 5._o for_o want_n of_o the_o wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n hereof_o or_o for_o want_v of_o its_o practice_n through_o a_o secret_a unwillingness_n to_o come_v up_o unto_o a_o full_a mortification_n of_o sin_n some_o be_v gall_v and_o perplex_v yea_o and_o defile_v with_o foolish_a and_o vain_a imagination_n all_o their_o day_n and_o although_o they_o prove_v not_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n yet_o they_o will_v deprive_v the_o soul_n of_o that_o peace_n and_o comfort_n which_o otherwise_o it_o may_v enjoy_v but_o yet_o there_o be_v much_o spiritual_a skill_n and_o diligence_n require_v to_o discover_v what_o be_v the_o true_a root_n and_o spring_n of_o the_o foolish_a imagination_n pretence_n and_o feign_v other_o ends._n but_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v watchful_a and_o diligent_a may_v trace_v they_o to_o their_o original_a and_o if_o such_o thought_n be_v strict_o examine_v at_o any_o time_n what_o be_v their_o design_n who_o work_n they_o do_v what_o make_v they_o so_o busy_a in_o the_o mind_n they_o will_v confess_v the_o truth_n both_o whence_o they_o come_v and_o what_o it_o be_v they_o aim_v at_o then_o be_v the_o mind_n guide_v unto_o its_o duty_n which_o be_v the_o extermination_n of_o the_o lust_n which_o they_o will_v make_v provision_n for_o 2._o such_o imagination_n be_v no_o evidence_n of_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n in_o what_o degree_n soever_o they_o be_v where_o they_o be_v afflictive_a where_o they_o be_v a_o burden_n unto_o the_o soul_n which_o it_o groan_v under_o and_o will_v be_v deliver_v from_o there_o be_v a_o full_a account_n give_v by_o the_o apostle_n of_o the_o conflict_n between_o indwelling_a sin_n and_o grace_n rom._n of_o the_o soul_n of_o believer_n that_o which_o make_v they_o think_v their_o condition_n wretched_a and_o miserable_a in_o some_o sort_n and_o which_o they_o earnest_o cry_v out_o for_o deliverance_n from_o v_o 24._o this_o be_v the_o present_a case_n these_o figment_n of_o the_o heart_n these_o imagination_n will_v arise_v in_o the_o mind_n of_o men._n they_o will_v do_v so_o sometime_o to_o a_o high_a degree_n they_o will_v impose_v they_o on_o we_o with_o deceit_n and_o violence_n lead_v captive_a unto_o the_o law_n of_o they_o where_o they_o be_v reject_v condemn_a defy_v they_o will_v return_v again_o while_o there_o be_v any_o vanity_n remain_v in_o the_o mind_n or_o corruption_n in_o the_o affection_n but_o if_o the_o soul_n be_v sensible_a of_o they_o if_o it_o labour_v under_o they_o if_o it_o look_v on_o they_o as_o those_o that_o fight_v against_o its_o purity_n holiness_n and_o peace_n if_o it_o pray_v for_o deliverance_n from_o they_o they_o be_v no_o argument_n of_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin._n yea_o a_o great_a evidence_n unto_o the_o contrary_n may_v be_v take_v from_o that_o firm_a opposition_n unto_o they_o which_o the_o mind_n be_v constant_o engage_v in_o 3._o they_o be_v not_o a_o proof_n of_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n when_o there_o be_v a_o prevalent_a detestation_n of_o the_o lust_n from_o whence_o they_o proceed_v and_o who_o promotion_n they_o design_v maintain_v in_o the_o heart_n and_o mind_n i_o confess_v sometime_o this_o can_v be_v discover_v and_o all_o such_o various_a imagination_n be_v but_o mere_a effect_n of_o the_o incurable_a vanity_n and_o instability_n of_o our_o mind_n for_o these_o administer_v continual_a occasion_n unto_o random_n thought_n but_o for_o the_o most_o part_n as_o we_o observe_v before_o they_o be_v employ_v in_o the_o service_n of_o some_o lust_n and_o tend_v unto_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o it_o they_o be_v that_o which_o be_v prohibit_v by_o the_o apostle_n rom._n xiij_o 14._o make_v no_o provision_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o may_v be_v discover_v on_o strict_a examination_n now_o when_o the_o mind_n be_v fix_v in_o a_o constant_a detestation_n of_o that_o sin_n whereunto_o they_o lead_v as_o it_o be_v sin_n against_o god_n with_o a_o firm_a resolution_n against_o it_o in_o all_o circumstance_n that_o may_v occur_v no_o proof_n can_v be_v thence_o take_v for_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin._n 4._o sometime_o evil_a thought_n be_v the_o immediate_a injection_n of_o satan_n they_o be_v on_o many_o account_n most_o terrible_a unto_o the_o soul._n usual_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o they_o they_o be_v dreadful_a and_o ofttimes_o blasphemous_a and_o as_o unto_o the_o manner_n of_o their_o entrance_n into_o the_o mind_n it_o be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n surprise_v furious_a and_o invisible_a from_o such_o thought_n many_o have_v conclude_v themselves_o to_o be_v absolute_o under_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n and_o satan_n but_o they_o be_v by_o certain_a rule_n and_o infallible_a sign_n discoverable_a from_o whence_o they_o do_v proceed_v and_o on_o that_o discovery_n all_o pretence_n unto_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n in_o they_o must_v disappear_v and_o this_o be_v the_o first_o case_n which_o render_v the_o question_n dubious_a whether_o sin_n have_v the_o dominion_n in_o we_o or_o no_o 2_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o
to_o they_o that_o be_v sincere_a but_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n there_o be_v uncontrollable_a evidence_n of_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n in_o man_n some_o whereof_o i_o shall_v mention_v and_o only_o mention_v because_o they_o need_v neither_o proof_n nor_o illustration_n 1._o it_o be_v so_o where_o sin_n have_v possess_v the_o will._n and_o it_o have_v possess_v the_o will_n when_o there_o be_v no_o restraint_n from_o sin_v take_v from_o its_o nature_n but_o its_o consequent_n only_o 2._o when_o man_n proclaim_v their_o sin_n and_o hide_v they_o not_o when_o they_o boast_v in_o in_o 5._o have_v a_o enmity_n to_o true_a holiness_n and_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n or_o 6._o be_v visible_a apostate_n from_o profession_n especial_o if_o they_o add_v as_o be_v usual_a persecution_n to_o their_o apostasy_n or_o 7._o be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o sanctify_a principle_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o christian_a religion_n or_o 8._o be_v despiser_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o conversion_n or_o 9_o live_v in_o security_n under_o open_a providential_a warning_n and_o call_n to_o repentance_n or_o 10._o be_v enemy_n in_o their_o mind_n unto_o the_o true_a interest_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o world._n where_o these_o thing_n and_o the_o like_a be_v find_v there_o be_v no_o question_n what_o it_o be_v that_o have_v dominion_n and_o bear_v rule_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o men._n this_o all_o man_n may_v easy_o know_v as_o the_o apostle_n declare_v rom._n vi_fw-la 16._o chap._n iii_o the_o three_o enquiry_n handle_v viz._n what_o be_v the_o assurance_n give_v we_o and_o what_o be_v the_o ground_n thereof_o that_o sin_n shall_v not_o have_v dominion_n over_o we_o the_o ground_n of_o this_o assurance_n be_v that_o we_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o grace_n the_o force_n of_o this_o reason_n show_v viz._n how_o the_o law_n do_v not_o destroy_v the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n and_o how_o grace_n dethrow_v sin_n and_o give_v dominion_n over_o it_o and_o thus_o much_o have_v be_v speak_v unto_o the_o second_o thing_n propose_v at_o the_o entrance_n of_o this_o discourse_n namely_o a_o enquiry_n whether_o sin_n have_v the_o dominion_n in_o any_o of_o we_o or_o no_o i_o proceed_v unto_o that_o which_o offer_v itself_o from_o the_o word_n in_o the_o three_o place_n what_o be_v the_o assurance_n give_v we_o and_o what_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o it_o ready_a to_o despond_v and_o say_v they_o shall_v one_o day_n perish_v under_o their_o power_n it_o be_v a_o gospel_n word_n a_o word_n of_o good_a tiding_n that_o give_v they_o assurance_n that_o it_o shall_v never_o have_v dominion_n over_o they_o the_o ground_n of_o this_o assurance_n be_v that_o believer_n be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o grace_n and_o the_o force_n of_o this_o reason_n we_o may_v manifest_v in_o some_o few_o instance_n 1._o the_o law_n give_v no_o strength_n against_o sin_n unto_o they_o that_o be_v under_o it_o but_o grace_n do_v sin_n will_v neither_o be_v cast_v nor_o keep_v out_o of_o its_o throne_n but_o by_o a_o spiritual_a power_n and_o strength_n in_o the_o soul_n to_o oppose_v conquer_v and_o dethrow_v it_o where_o it_o be_v not_o conquer_v it_o will_v reign_v and_o conquer_v it_o will_v not_o be_v without_o a_o mighty_a prevail_a power_n this_o the_o law_n will_v not_o can_v give_v the_o law_n be_v take_v two_o way_n 1._o for_o the_o whole_a revelation_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o will_n of_o god_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n in_o this_o sense_n it_o have_v grace_n in_o it_o and_o so_o do_v give_v both_o life_n and_o 〈◊〉_d and_o strength_n against_o sin_n as_o the_o psalmist_n declare_v psal._n nineteeen_o 7_o 8_o 9_o in_o that_o sense_n it_o contain_v not_o only_o the_o law_n of_o precept_n but_o the_o promise_n also_o and_o the_o covenant_n which_o be_v the_o mean_n of_o convey_v spiritual_a life_n and_o strength_n unto_o the_o church_n in_o this_o sense_n it_o be_v not_o here_o speak_v of_o nor_o be_v any_o where_o oppose_v unto_o grace_n 2._o for_o the_o covenant_n rule_n of_o perfect_a obedience_n do_v this_o and_o live_v in_o this_o sense_n man_n be_v say_v to_o be_v under_o it_o in_o opposition_n unto_o be_v under_o grace_n they_o be_v under_o its_o power_n rule_n condition_n and_o authority_n as_o a_o covenant_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n all_o man_n be_v under_o it_o who_o be_v not_o enstate_v in_o the_o new_a covenant_n through_o faith_n in_o christ_n jesus_n who_o set_v up_o in_o they_o and_o over_o they_o the_o rule_n of_o grace_n for_o all_o man_n must_v be_v one_o way_n or_o other_o under_o the_o rule_n of_o god_n and_o he_o rule_v only_o by_o the_o law_n or_o by_o grace_n and_o none_o can_v be_v under_o both_o at_o the_o same_o time_n in_o this_o sense_n the_o law_n be_v never_o ordain_v of_o god_n to_o convey_v grace_n or_o spiritual_a strength_n unto_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n have_v it_o be_v so_o the_o promise_n and_o the_o gospel_n have_v be_v needless_a if_o there_o have_v be_v a_o law_n give_v which_o can_v have_v give_v life_n very_o righteousness_n shall_v have_v be_v by_o the_o law_n gal._n iij._o 21._o if_o it_o can_v have_v give_v life_n or_o strength_n it_o will_v have_v produce_v righteousness_n we_o shall_v have_v be_v justify_v by_o it_o it_o discover_v sin_n and_o condemn_v it_o but_o give_v no_o strength_n to_o oppose_v it_o it_o be_v not_o god_n ordinance_n for_o the_o dethrow_n of_o sin_n nor_o for_o the_o destruction_n of_o its_o dominion_n this_o law_n fall_v under_o a_o double_a consideration_n but_o in_o neither_o of_o they_o be_v design_v to_o give_v power_n or_o strength_n against_o sin._n 1._o as_o it_o be_v give_v unto_o mankind_n in_o the_o state_n of_o innocency_n and_o it_o do_v then_o absolute_o and_o exact_o declare_v the_o whole_a duty_n of_o man_n whatever_o god_n in_o his_o wisdom_n and_o holiness_n do_v require_v of_o we_o it_o be_v god_n rule_v of_o man_n according_a to_o the_o principle_n of_o the_o righteousness_n trust_v unto_o in_o the_o room_n of_o the_o law_n with_o its_o command_n and_o duty_n but_o the_o law_n make_v nothing_o perfect_a nor_o be_v the_o motive_n it_o give_v for_o the_o ruin_n of_o the_o interest_n of_o sin_n in_o we_o able_a to_o bear_v we_o out_o and_o carry_v we_o through_o that_o undertake_n but_o the_o motive_n and_o encouragement_n give_v by_o grace_n to_o endeavour_v the_o utter_a ruin_n of_o sin_n in_o a_o way_n of_o duty_n be_v such_o as_o give_v life_n cheerfulness_n courage_n and_o perseverance_n they_o continual_o animate_v relieve_v and_o revive_v the_o soul_n in_o all_o its_o work_n and_o duty_n keep_v it_o from_o faint_a and_o despondency_n for_o they_o be_v all_o take_v from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o of_o christ_n from_o the_o whole_a work_n and_o to_o the_o promise_n isa._n xl_o 31._o four_o christ_n be_v not_o in_o the_o law_n he_o be_v not_o propose_v in_o it_o not_o communicate_v by_o it_o we_o be_v not_o make_v partaker_n of_o he_o thereby_o this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o it_o be_v christ_n reveal_v by_o it_o he_o be_v propose_v and_o exhibit_v unto_o we_o thereby_o be_v we_o make_v partaker_n of_o he_o and_o all_o the_o benefit_n of_o his_o mediation_n and_o he_o it_o be_v alone_o who_o come_v to_o and_o can_v destroy_v this_o work_n of_o the_o devil_n the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n be_v the_o compliment_n of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o devil_n where_o all_o his_o design_n centre_n this_o the_o son_n of_o god_n be_v manifest_a to_o destroy_v he_o alone_o ruin_v the_o kingdom_n of_o satan_n who_o power_n be_v act_v in_o the_o rule_n of_o sin._n wherefore_o hereunto_o our_o assurance_n of_o this_o comfortable_a truth_n be_v principal_o resolve_v and_o what_o christ_n have_v do_v and_o do_v for_o this_o end_n be_v a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o subject_n of_o gospel_n revelation_n the_o like_a may_v be_v speak_v of_o the_o communication_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n which_o be_v the_o only_a principal_a efficient_a cause_n of_o the_o ruin_n of_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin._n for_o where_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n be_v there_o be_v liberty_n and_o no_o where_o else_o but_o we_o receive_v this_o spirit_n not_o by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n but_o by_o the_o hear_n of_o faith_n gal._n iij._o 2._o chap._n vi_o the_o practical_a observation_n draw_v from_o and_o application_n make_v of_o the_o whole_a text._n have_v open_v the_o word_n and_o make_v some_o improvement_n of_o they_o i_o shall_v now_o take_v one_o or_o two_o observation_n from_o the_o design_n of_o they_o and_o issue_v the_o whole_a in_o a_o word_n of_o application_n i._o it_o be_v a_o unspeakable_a mercy_n and_o privilege_n to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin._n as_o such_o it_o be_v here_o propose_v by_o the_o apostle_n as_o such_o it_o be_v esteem_v by_o they_o that_o believe_v nothing_o be_v more_o sweet_a precious_a and_o valuable_a unto_o a_o soul_n conflict_v with_o sin_n and_o temptation_n than_o to_o hear_v that_o sin_n shall_v not_o have_v the_o dominion_n over_o they_o ah_o what_o will_v some_o give_v that_o it_o may_v be_v speak_v unto_o they_o with_o power_n so_o as_o that_o they_o may_v steadfast_o believe_v it_o and_o have_v the_o comfort_n of_o it_o fool_n make_v a_o mock_n of_o sin_n and_o some_o glory_n in_o the_o service_n of_o it_o which_o be_v their_o shame_n but_o those_o who_o understand_v any_o thing_n aright_o either_o of_o what_o be_v present_a or_o what_o be_v to_o come_v do_v know_v that_o this_o freedom_n from_o its_o dominion_n be_v a_o unvaluable_a mercy_n and_o we_o may_v consider_v the_o ground_n which_o evidence_n it_o so_o to_o be_v 1._o it_o appear_v so_o to_o be_v from_o the_o cause_n of_o it_o it_o be_v that_o which_o no_o man_n can_v by_o his_o own_o power_n and_o the_o utmost_a of_o his_o endeavour_n attain_v unto_o man_n by_o they_o may_v grow_v rich_a or_o wise_a or_o learned_a but_o no_o man_n by_o they_o can_v shake_v off_o the_o yoke_n of_o sin._n if_o a_o man_n have_v all_o the_o wealth_n of_o the_o world_n he_o can_v not_o by_o it_o purchase_v this_o liberty_n it_o will_v be_v despise_v and_o when_o sinner_n go_v hence_o to_o the_o place_n where_o the_o rich_a man_n be_v torment_v and_o have_v nothing_o more_o to_o do_v with_o this_o world_n they_o will_v give_v it_o all_o if_o they_o have_v it_o for_o a_o interest_n in_o this_o liberty_n it_o be_v that_o which_o the_o law_n and_o all_o the_o duty_n of_o it_o can_v procure_v the_o law_n and_o its_o duty_n as_o we_o have_v declare_v can_v never_o destroy_v the_o dominion_n of_o sin._n all_o man_n will_v find_v the_o truth_n hereof_o that_o ever_o come_v to_o fall_v under_o the_o power_n of_o real_a conviction_n when_o sin_n press_v on_o they_o and_o they_o be_v afraid_a of_o its_o consequent_n they_o will_v find_v that_o the_o law_n be_v weak_a and_o the_o flesh_n be_v weak_a and_o their_o duty_n be_v weak_a their_o resolution_n and_o vow_n be_v weak_a all_o insufficient_a to_o relieve_v they_o and_o if_o they_o think_v themselves_o free_v one_o day_n they_o shall_v find_v the_o next_o that_o they_o be_v under_o bondage_n sin_n for_o all_o this_o will_v rule_v over_o they_o with_o force_n and_o rigour_n and_o in_o this_o condition_n do_v some_o spend_v all_o their_o day_n in_o this_o world._n they_o kindle_v spark_n of_o their_o own_o and_o walk_v in_o the_o light_n of_o they_o until_o they_o lie_v down_o in_o darkness_n and_o sorrow_n they_o sin_n and_o promise_n amendment_n and_o endeavour_v recompense_n by_o some_o duty_n yet_o can_v never_o extricate_v themselves_o from_o the_o yoke_n of_o sin._n we_o may_v therefore_o learn_v the_o excellency_n of_o this_o privilege_n first_o from_o
