suitable_a end_n and_o conformable_a to_o the_o will_n of_o the_o first_o cause_n that_o order_v he_o to_o that_o end_n as_o long_o as_o he_o move_v conformable_a to_o that_o rule_n he_o move_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o his_o maker_n to_o a_o most_o suitable_a end_n but_o when_o once_o he_o violate_v that_o rule_n he_o contract_v a_o deformity_n ataxy_n and_o uncomeliness_n by_o such_o violation_n 3._o a_o obligation_n to_o some_o positive_a punishment_n annex_v to_o the_o violation_n of_o that_o law_n for_o let_v we_o suppose_v any_o creature_n want_v will_n and_o understanding_n that_o do_v notwithstanding_o not_o move_v according_a to_o this_o rule_n by_o this_o he_o will_v most_o clear_o contract_v the_o two_o former_a viz._n loss_n and_o deformity_n but_o where_o a_o law_n be_v give_v to_o a_o creature_n endue_v with_o these_o faculty_n the_o violation_n of_o the_o law_n so_o give_v include_v in_o it_o not_o only_o a_o privative_a offence_n as_o i_o may_v call_v it_o to_o which_o a_o privative_a punishment_n may_v be_v answerable_a but_o a_o positive_a rebellion_n rejection_n and_o disobedience_n to_o that_o duty_n and_o subjection_n he_o owe_v and_o be_v enable_v to_o perform_v to_o his_o maker_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v most_o just_a and_o rational_a that_o there_o shall_v be_v add_v as_o a_o sanction_n to_o that_o law_n some_o positive_a penalty_n to_o revenge_v such_o a_o violation_n that_o as_o the_o obedience_n to_o that_o rule_n will_v carry_v a_o man_n to_o a_o positive_a good_a so_o the_o disobedience_n thereunto_o shall_v be_v follow_v with_o more_o than_o a_o bare_a privation_n of_o that_o good._n this_o then_o be_v the_o first_o proposition_n that_o be_v lay_v in_o the_o understanding_n or_o conscience_n clear_a or_o dubious_a so_o be_v the_o act_n and_o conclusion_n of_o the_o conscience_n true_a or_o erroneous_a quick_a or_o dull_a it_o concern_v we_o therefore_o to_o inquire_v how_o these_o principle_n come_v into_o the_o understanding_n we_o find_v in_o the_o creature_n several_a instinct_n incident_a almost_o to_o every_o creature_n which_o be_v connatural_a with_o it_o we_o may_v observe_v likewise_o in_o man_n disposition_n and_o inclination_n of_o several_a kind_n common_a to_o whole_a nation_n climate_n family_n which_o though_o they_o incline_v the_o man_n to_o action_n and_o carriage_n suitable_a to_o those_o several_a disposition_n yet_o be_v not_o law_n or_o principle_n of_o nature_n these_o principle_n therefore_o of_o the_o divine_a law_n call_v natural_a principle_n of_o conscience_n be_v in_o the_o understanding_n these_o way_n 1._o supernatural_o thus_o almighty_a god_n do_v at_o first_o give_v man_n a_o copy_n of_o his_o will_n show_v to_o his_o understanding_n and_o will_n command_v he_o to_o obey_v it_o and_o this_o perfect_a discovery_n he_o make_v at_o first_o and_o when_o it_o decay_v after_o the_o fall_n of_o man_n it_o be_v evident_a he_o do_v by_o divine_a inspiration_n and_o revelation_n reenforced_v and_o discover_v it_o as_o appear_v by_o the_o holy_a history_n 2._o artificial_o by_o tradition_n from_o the_o first_o man_n to_o his_o posterity_n and_o from_o one_o man_n to_o another_o for_o though_o the_o first_o man_n lose_v much_o of_o his_o light_n and_o knowledge_n by_o the_o fall_n yet_o he_o be_v not_o without_o divers_a of_o those_o principle_n which_o god_n at_o first_o show_v he_o 3._o naturally_n viz._n by_o the_o help_n of_o reason_n and_o discourse_n for_o although_o if_o a_o man_n be_v breed_v up_o from_o his_o infancy_n without_o any_o manner_n of_o instruction_n it_o will_v be_v very_o difficult_a for_o he_o to_o take_v up_o of_o himself_o any_o sound_a principle_n of_o nature_n yet_o i_o do_v believe_v that_o the_o divine_a law_n give_v to_o man_n have_v that_o justice_n and_o agreeableness_n to_o right_a reason_n that_o when_o once_o the_o motion_n of_o reason_n have_v any_o material_n of_o observation_n to_o work_v upon_o it_o will_v incline_v such_o a_o man_n though_o weak_o to_o some_o though_o not_o all_o of_o those_o divine_a law_n which_o be_v first_o perfect_o write_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o first_o man._n the_o precept_n of_o the_o divine_a law_n though_o they_o be_v not_o congenite_fw-la with_o we_o yet_o many_o of_o they_o be_v so_o rational_a and_o hold_v such_o a_o conformity_n with_o right_a reason_n that_o reason_n exercise_v will_v light_v upon_o some_o of_o they_o hence_o several_a nation_n that_o we_o know_v not_o ever_o to_o have_v have_v correspondence_n one_o with_o another_o yet_o agree_v in_o many_o natural_a
observation_n and_o custom_n as_o agree_v to_o the_o common_a reason_n of_o both_o and_o the_o wise_a god_n have_v so_o order_v the_o business_n of_o this_o world_n that_o those_o law_n which_o he_o give_v to_o man_n best_a and_o most_o rational_o conduce_v to_o his_o good_a here_o as_o well_o as_o hereafter_o as_o be_v most_o evident_a in_o the_o precept_n of_o the_o first_o and_o second_o have_v do_v and_o by_o this_o a_o man_n may_v see_v that_o the_o divine_a law_n do_v not_o look_v at_o all_o upon_o the_o outward_a act_n as_o the_o violation_n or_o performance_n of_o it_o but_o so_o far_o forth_o only_o as_o it_o be_v a_o effect_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o will._n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o conscience_n look_v upon_o the_o work_n within_o it_o be_v true_a when_o the_o act_n of_o the_o will_n be_v full_a and_o complete_a it_o be_v testify_v by_o the_o outward_a action_n but_o it_o be_v not_o the_o outward_a action_n that_o make_v the_o violation_n or_o performance_n this_o then_o be_v the_o second_o proposition_n or_o assumption_n this_o or_o that_o i_o have_v do_v or_o omit_v 3._o the_o three_o proposition_n be_v the_o conclusion_n either_o of_o acquittal_n or_o condemnation_n of_o obligation_n to_o that_o gild_n which_o arise_v upon_o the_o breach_n of_o that_o law_n loss_n of_o my_o end_n deformity_n and_o liableness_n to_o the_o curse_n thus_o far_o concern_v the_o understanding_n and_o the_o act_n of_o it_o the_o second_o great_a faculty_n be_v the_o will_n whereby_o the_o soul_n be_v move_v to_o the_o desire_n and_o prosecution_n of_o that_o which_o be_v good._n it_o be_v true_a that_o all_o power_n carry_v with_o they_o a_o natural_a appetite_n or_o motion_n to_o that_o which_o be_v the_o object_n of_o that_o power_n and_o consequent_o come_v under_o the_o name_n and_o notion_n of_o good_a the_o understanding_n natural_o move_v to_o know_v its_o object_n as_o to_o a_o good_a suitable_a to_o that_o power_n the_o sense_n move_v to_o their_o object_n the_o eye_n be_v not_o satisfy_v with_o see_v nor_o the_o ear_n with_o hear_v the_o natural_a appetite_n move_v to_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o such_o a_o good_a as_o may_v fill_v and_o answer_v the_o want_n or_o exigence_n of_o the_o thing_n that_o have_v that_o appetite_n but_o the_o difference_n between_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o will_n and_o other_o faculty_n be_v considerable_a in_o two_o thing_n 1._o in_o the_o object_n general_o the_o object_n of_o the_o will_n be_v good_a and_o this_o distinguish_v it_o from_o the_o understanding_n who_o object_n be_v truth_n so_o that_o though_o the_o same_o thing_n be_v the_o object_n of_o both_o yet_o those_o faculty_n fasten_v upon_o it_o under_o several_a notion_n as_o the_o same_o body_n may_v be_v the_o object_n of_o my_o eye_n as_o colour_v and_o of_o my_o touch_n as_o hard_o and_o though_o good_a and_o goodness_n be_v a_o object_n of_o my_o understanding_n as_o a_o scibile_n whereby_o my_o understanding_n examine_v the_o truth_n the_o nature_n the_o circumstance_n the_o degree_n the_o suitableness_n of_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v a_o object_n of_o my_o will_n as_o appetible_a or_o desirable_a which_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o union_n with_o that_o it_o conclude_v to_o be_v good_a and_o such_o a_o good_a have_v these_o quality_n 1._o it_o must_v be_v â—_o possible_a good_a and_o this_o have_v a_o double_a reason_n 1._o because_o this_o be_v a_o inclination_n put_v into_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o wise_a maker_n of_o the_o soul_n who_o true_a de_fw-fr facto_fw-la it_o may_v fall_v out_o that_o good_a to_o which_o the_o soul_n be_v move_v may_v not_o be_v attain_v by_o reason_n of_o some_o extrinsical_a intervenience_n and_o yet_o ex_fw-la natura_fw-la rei_fw-la the_o good_a may_v be_v attainable_a 2._o because_o the_o will_n be_v a_o rational_a faculty_n and_o though_o of_o itself_o it_o move_v indeterminate_o to_o all_o good_a yet_o when_o it_o move_v to_o any_o determinate_a object_n it_o move_v upon_o the_o predecision_n of_o the_o rational_a understanding_n now_o it_o be_v a_o mere_a irrational_a act_n to_o move_v and_o impossible_a thing_n that_o it_o shall_v move_v to_o that_o which_o the_o understanding_n do_v not_o in_o some_o sort_n conclude_v possible_a to_o attain_v for_o the_o end_n of_o desire_n be_v union_n to_o the_o thing_n desire_v and_o be_v there_o not_o a_o possibility_n of_o union_n conclude_v in_o the_o understanding_n there_o will_v be_v a_o impossibility_n to_o will_v it_o or_o move_v after_o it_o 2._o it_o must_v be_v a_o suitable_a good_a to_o the_o exigence_n nature_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o subject_a that_o desire_v it_o 1._o to_o the_o exigence_n of_o the_o subject_a and_o this_o be_v evident_a in_o all_o motion_n of_o all_o thing_n they_o move_v to_o that_o which_o be_v apt_a to_o fill_v up_o and_o supply_v that_o vacuity_n which_o be_v in_o the_o thing_n desire_v it_o even_o in_o natural_a as_o well_o as_o rational_a appetite_n the_o hungry_a man_n his_o appetite_n be_v not_o for_o clothes_n but_o food_n 2._o according_a to_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o subject_a a_o sensitive_a appetite_n move_v to_o a_o sensitive_a good_a and_o a_o rational_a to_o a_o rational_a good_a and_o a_o immortal_a to_o a_o immortal_a goâ—â—_n and_o although_o man_n consist_v of_o several_a piece_n and_o therefore_o have_v several_a exigence_n and_o condition_n and_o consequent_o move_v to_o several_a end_n answerable_a thereunto_o and_o the_o will_n be_v carry_v to_o those_o end_n yet_o when_o the_o will_n be_v rational_o and_o regular_o move_v it_o move_v to_o the_o inferior_a end_n or_o good_a with_o subordination_n to_o that_o which_o be_v the_o great_a good_a and_o therefore_o rest_v not_o in_o they_o nor_o be_v satisfy_v with_o they_o nay_o though_o by_o reason_n of_o ignorance_n or_o other_o accident_n it_o mistake_v or_o know_v not_o or_o forget_v its_o supreme_a end_n it_o take_v no_o full_a satisfaction_n in_o those_o inferior_a good_n though_o it_o know_v not_o what_o to_o desire_v yet_o in_o all_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o these_o inferior_a desire_n it_o find_v that_o it_o have_v not_o what_o it_o shall_v and_o that_o breed_v discontent_a weariness_n and_o changeable_a pursuit_n of_o empty_a and_o unsatisfy_a pleasure_n and_o profit_n and_o contentment_n now_o the_o will_n be_v carry_v to_o its_o object_n by_o a_o double_a principle_n of_o motion_n 1._o original_a that_o great_a and_o wise_a god_n that_o have_v put_v in_o all_o thing_n inclination_n to_o their_o several_a end_n have_v put_v this_o will_n in_o man_n to_o move_v to_o his_o end_n wherein_o he_o have_v at_o once_o fulfil_v his_o own_o will_n he_o do_v it_o because_o it_o please_v he_o and_o lead_v man_n to_o his_o happiness_n for_o this_o we_o may_v most_o clear_o see_v in_o the_o frame_n of_o all_o thing_n his_o wisdom_n and_o his_o goodness_n be_v such_o that_o the_o duty_n and_o the_o happiness_n of_o his_o creature_n be_v never_o sever_v when_o the_o creature_n move_v to_o the_o fulfil_n of_o his_o maker_n will_n he_o move_v in_o the_o same_o act_n to_o his_o own_o perfection_n and_o happiness_n 2._o immediate_n the_o understanding_n be_v the_o seat_n where_o god_n have_v set_v his_o light_n the_o light_n of_o reason_n the_o decision_n or_o determination_n of_o reason_n be_v or_o shall_v be_v the_o guide_n of_o our_o will_n now_o the_o determination_n of_o reason_n and_o understanding_n be_v twofold_a 1._o general_n that_o whatsoever_o tend_v to_o the_o good_a of_o the_o subject_a be_v to_o be_v desire_v and_o prosecute_v and_o that_o according_a to_o the_o several_a degree_n of_o that_o good_a according_o ought_v the_o desire_n and_o prosecution_n to_o be_v if_o there_o be_v two_o good_n propound_v the_o one_o more_o perfect_a universal_a etc._n etc._n than_o the_o other_o then_o though_o both_o may_v be_v pursue_v yet_o this_o with_o subordination_n to_o that_o 2._o special_a specificate_v and_o determine_v this_o or_o that_o to_o be_v good_a and_o give_v the_o degree_n thereof_o which_o be_v or_o shall_v be_v the_o measure_n of_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o will._n this_o be_v the_o last_o act_n of_o the_o practical_a understanding_n for_o
therefore_o must_v needs_o take_v up_o the_o high_a and_o choice_a desire_n to_o attain_v and_o keep_v he_o god_n be_v please_v to_o communicate_v himself_o to_o these_o desire_n his_o acceptation_n of_o they_o and_o intimate_v expression_n of_o love_n to_o his_o creature_n this_o as_o it_o be_v the_o high_a happiness_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o creature_n so_o it_o can_v choose_v but_o engage_v the_o soul_n to_o return_v love_n and_o obedience_n to_o the_o will_n of_o his_o god_n especial_o when_o all_o those_o engagement_n to_o obedience_n be_v likewise_o present_v to_o the_o soul_n that_o it_o owe_v its_o be_v to_o he_o that_o his_o will_n be_v most_o righteous_a and_o fit_a to_o be_v obey_v and_o this_o obedience_n arise_v from_o these_o principle_n of_o love_n to_o god_n as_o it_o be_v without_o all_o hypocrisy_n so_o it_o be_v without_o all_o pain_n and_o tediousness_n for_o it_o do_v arise_v from_o a_o inward_a and_o active_a principle_n and_o be_v act_v by_o most_o obedient_a and_o active_a faculty_n man_n take_v no_o less_o delight_n in_o his_o obedience_n which_o be_v the_o fruit_n of_o his_o love_n and_o duty_n to_o his_o maker_n than_o he_o do_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o beauty_n and_o goodness_n of_o his_o maker_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o that_o love_n and_o duty_n and_o as_o the_o act_n of_o the_o natural_a appetite_n upon_o a_o proper_a and_o seasonable_a object_n when_o they_o exceed_v not_o their_o proportion_n be_v delightful_a so_o the_o act_n of_o the_o rational_a appetite_n consist_v in_o love_n and_o obedience_n to_o god_n wherein_o they_o can_v not_o exceed_v their_o just_a proportion_n be_v the_o delight_n of_o the_o soul_n his_o holiness_n consist_v in_o the_o return_n to_o his_o maker_n of_o love_n and_o obedience_n and_o the_o goodness_n of_o his_o god_n in_o communicate_v himself_o and_o his_o favour_n exciting_a and_o accept_v those_o return_n do_v both_o conduce_v to_o the_o fulfil_n of_o his_o blessedness_n all_o this_o as_o it_o be_v derive_v from_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n 1_o gen._n 28._o so_o it_o end_v in_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o creature_n and_o god_n see_v all_o that_o he_o have_v make_v and_o behold_v it_o be_v very_o good._n ib._n ver._n 31._o 2._o the_o mean_n whereby_o he_o attain_v or_o rather_o preserve_v this_o state_n of_o happiness_n which_o be_v in_o effect_n congenite_fw-la with_o though_o not_o essential_a to_o his_o be_v this_o be_v only_o obedience_n to_o the_o will_n of_o his_o maker_n in_o all_o inferior_a creature_n we_o see_v a_o kind_n of_o inclination_n or_o instinct_n to_o follow_v the_o rule_n of_o their_o nature_n this_o conduct_n they_o to_o that_o degree_n of_o felicity_n and_o beauty_n which_o be_v commensurate_a to_o their_o nature_n herein_o though_o they_o follow_v the_o will_n of_o their_o creator_n in_o the_o law_n of_o their_o creation_n it_o be_v not_o proper_o obedience_n nor_o that_o instinct_n proper_o a_o law_n the_o latter_a be_v only_o give_v and_o the_o former_a only_o perform_v by_o such_o a_o creature_n as_o have_v liberty_n and_o choice_n and_o consequent_o knowledge_n and_o understanding_n without_o which_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o have_v the_o other_o man_n alone_a of_o all_o visible_a creature_n be_v endue_v with_o both_o and_o so_o fit_v to_o receive_v a_o law_n and_o to_o obey_v it_o be_v thus_o fit_v he_o have_v a_o double_a engagement_n of_o obedience_n viz._n of_o duty_n and_o of_o profit_n 1._o of_o duty_n he_o receive_v his_o be_v from_o his_o maker_n and_o that_o be_v furnish_v with_o happiness_n this_o be_v a_o infinite_a and_o boundless_a engagement_n of_o duty_n even_o to_o the_o utmost_a of_o his_o be_v 2._o of_o profit_n or_o advantage_n this_o stock_n of_o happiness_n that_o be_v but_o now_o free_o confer_v upon_o he_o be_v put_v into_o his_o hand_n under_o this_o condition_n if_o he_o break_v his_o condition_n he_o forfeit_v and_o that_o most_o just_o his_o happiness_n but_o yet_o if_o this_o law_n be_v beyond_o the_o capacity_n of_o his_o nature_n than_o there_o may_v be_v some_o excuse_n of_o his_o disobedience_n but_o as_o this_o happiness_n be_v full_o commensurate_a to_o his_o nature_n so_o be_v this_o law_n which_o be_v the_o subject_n of_o his_o obedience_n we_o shall_v therefore_o consider_v these_o three_o thing_n 1._o what_o be_v the_o law_n of_o man_n creation_n 2._o whence_o the_o obligation_n of_o it_o 3._o what_o the_o sanction_n or_o penalty_n 1._o what_o the_o law_n be_v obedience_n be_v the_o duty_n of_o man_n to_o the_o will_n of_o his_o creator_n the_o law_n be_v the_o specification_n of_o that_o will_n in_o this_o or_o that_o particular_a command_n or_o prohibition_n the_o law_n that_o god_n give_v to_o man_n therefore_o be_v of_o two_o kind_n 1._o such_o as_o do_v bear_v a_o kind_n of_o proportion_n or_o convenience_n to_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n such_o be_v all_o those_o moral_n dictate_v which_o we_o call_v law_n of_o nature_n as_o keep_v of_o faith_n worship_v god_n and_o most_o if_o not_o all_o those_o precept_n in_o the_o decalogue_n be_v but_o expression_n of_o these_o law_n these_o though_o
