fill_v as_o full_a with_o mercy_n and_o compassion_n as_o a_o infinite_a wisdom_n can_v devise_v it_o have_v that_o fullness_n of_o compassion_n more_o than_o possible_o all_o the_o wisdom_n of_o man_n in_o the_o world_n if_o all_o the_o mercy_n that_o be_v in_o all_o the_o man_n in_o the_o world_n be_v put_v into_o one_o the_o heart_n of_o one_o man_n and_o you_o be_v to_o be_v at_o his_o dispose_n in_o a_o matter_n of_o the_o great_a concernment_n you_o will_v think_v yourselves_o well_o whereas_o before_o you_o lay_v at_o the_o mercy_n of_o a_o man_n that_o be_v very_o rigorous_a and_o full_a of_o severity_n now_o you_o come_v to_o lie_v at_o the_o mercy_n of_o a_o man_n that_o have_v all_o the_o bowel_n and_o tender_a compassion_n of_o all_o the_o man_n in_o the_o world_n their_o duty_n only_a conscience_n hale_v they_o to_o it_o and_o tell_v they_o that_o they_o must_v do_v it_o and_o if_o they_o do_v neglect_v it_o conscience_n fly_v in_o their_o face_n and_o tell_v they_o they_o must_v perish_v eternal_o and_o they_o seek_v therefore_o to_o pacify_v their_o conscience_n only_o by_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n and_o by_o their_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n and_o so_o seek_v it_o by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n that_o be_v the_o only_a way_n that_o they_o do_v take_v to_o pacify_v their_o conscience_n and_o get_v rest_n and_o peace_n unto_o their_o soul_n alas_o all_o this_o while_n they_o be_v labour_v and_o toil_a but_o can_v do_v it_o for_o while_o man_n seek_v righteousness_n by_o the_o law_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o toil_a labour_n that_o will_v not_o give_v rest_n the_o first_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n first_o the_o law_n give_v no_o strength_n at_o all_o to_o enable_v i_o to_o perform_v duty_n and_o therefore_o the_o child_n of_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v under_o bondage_n as_o pharaoh_n taskmaster_n command_v so_o much_o brick_n to_o be_v make_v but_o will_v afford_v they_o no_o straw_n no_o mean_n to_o do_v it_o so_o some_o set_v forth_o the_o bondage_n and_o servitude_n of_o the_o law_n command_v such_o thing_n as_o it_o give_v no_o strength_n at_o all_o to_o perform_v quest_n but_o you_o will_v say_v be_v this_o the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v god_n so_o hard_o to_o his_o creature_n as_o to_o command_v that_o which_o he_o give_v no_o ability_n to_o perform_v answ_n we_o must_v know_v that_o god_n do_v once_o give_v strength_n to_o perform_v duty_n but_o certain_o now_o the_o law_n of_o god_n command_v duty_n but_o give_v no_o strength_n to_o perform_v they_o there_o be_v no_o strength_n enable_v we_o to_o perform_v duty_n until_o the_o spirit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n do_v come_v into_o the_o soul_n we_o may_v perform_v the_o outward_a part_n of_o they_o but_o not_o perform_v duty_n in_o such_o a_o spiritual_a manner_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v suitable_a to_o our_o heart_n so_o as_o to_o bring_v ease_n and_o quiet_a unto_o our_o soul_n and_o though_o the_o soul_n do_v seek_v to_o get_v rest_n and_o ease_v to_o itself_o yet_o it_o will_v not_o come_v that_o way_n the_o second_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n second_o the_o law_n require_v perfect_a obedience_n in_o every_o thing_n and_o denounce_v a_o curse_n against_o he_o that_o do_v not_o continue_v in_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v write_v in_o the_o law_n to_o do_v it_o now_o when_o man_n and_o woman_n be_v seek_v to_o get_v rest_n to_o their_o soul_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n they_o can_v perform_v duty_n as_o they_o ought_v and_o therefore_o they_o have_v no_o rest_n but_o they_o see_v the_o law_n to_o condemn_v they_o because_o they_o do_v not_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o perfect_a manner_n and_o yet_o they_o think_v they_o must_v go_v on_o and_o do_v as_o well_o as_o they_o can_v i_o but_o still_o conscience_n have_v matter_n to_o accuse_v they_o of_o you_o have_v not_o do_v enough_o you_o still_o come_v short_a and_o though_o you_o do_v some_o duty_n you_o neglect_v other_o duty_n so_o that_o conscience_n have_v they_o at_o advantage_n every_o day_n and_o they_o be_v continual_o under_o the_o bondage_n of_o a_o accuse_v and_o condemn_v conscience_n that_o they_o can_v have_v no_o rest_n to_o their_o soul_n they_o perform_v duty_n but_o question_n with_o themselves_o how_o can_v i_o know_v that_o the_o infinite_a holy_a god_n will_v accept_v of_o what_o i_o do_v and_o although_o they_o may_v get_v quiet_a for_o a_o little_a while_n yet_o conscience_n come_v upon_o they_o again_o and_o disquiet_v they_o and_o cast_v fear_n and_o doubt_n â—to_z their_o soul_n insomuch_o that_o many_o poor_a creature_n have_v go_v seven_o or_o perhaps_o twice_o seven_o year_n under_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n and_o never_o have_v any_o rest_n or_o peace_n and_o yet_o still_o have_v go_v on_o make_v conscience_n of_o their_o way_n but_o withal_o full_a of_o fear_n and_o doubt_n lest_o all_o shall_v not_o be_v well_o with_o they_o at_o last_o the_o three_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n and_o beside_o while_o the_o soul_n go_v on_o to_o seek_v quiet_a and_o rest_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n there_o be_v a_o unsuitableness_n between_o the_o duty_n that_o be_v perform_v and_o the_o heart_n of_o such_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n so_o that_o the_o very_a work_n that_o they_o do_v and_o duty_n they_o perform_v be_v grievous_a and_o tedious_a unto_o they_o ay_o but_o now_o say_v christ_n o_o come_v to_o i_o such_o as_o these_o be_v be_v there_o any_o of_o you_o that_o have_v have_v your_o conscience_n trouble_v and_o have_v desire_v o_o that_o there_o may_v be_v peace_n between_o god_n and_o my_o soul_n that_o i_o may_v have_v assurance_n of_o god_n love_n what_o course_n have_v you_o take_v to_o get_v it_o have_v you_o not_o seek_v to_o bring_v it_o about_o by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o have_v think_v to_o get_v rest_n and_o peace_n to_o your_o soul_n that_o way_n indeed_o it_o be_v better_a to_o go_v on_o that_o way_n than_o in_o the_o way_n of_o sin_n but_o to_o think_v to_o have_v rest_n and_o peace_n that_o way_n have_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o evil_a in_o it_o than_o you_o be_v aware_a of_o if_o man_n shall_v think_v to_o quiet_v themselves_o that_o way_n and_o thereby_o put_v off_o the_o righteousness_n that_o come_v by_o faith_n they_o may_v come_v to_o be_v harden_v before_o they_o be_v aware_a but_o be_v there_o any_o of_o you_o that_o be_v seek_v rest_n and_o peace_n unto_o your_o soul_n in_o such_o a_o way_n by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n say_v christ_n know_v that_o this_o be_v not_o the_o way_n for_o you_o to_o have_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n it_o be_v true_a you_o must_v abstain_v from_o sin_n and_o perform_v duty_n o_o but_o if_o you_o will_v have_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n you_o must_v come_v to_o i_o it_o be_v by_o the_o soul_n roll_a of_o itself_o upon_o the_o perfect_a righteousness_n that_o there_o be_v in_o jesus_n christ_n that_o only_o can_v bring_v true_a rest_n unto_o the_o soul_n many_o a_o poor_a sinner_n that_o have_v be_v seek_v rest_n many_o year_n have_v not_o get_v it_o but_o when_o the_o lord_n have_v be_v please_v to_o come_v in_o with_o one_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n set_v it_o home_o upon_o their_o soul_n they_o have_v get_v more_o rest_n and_o quiet_a to_o their_o soul_n in_o one_o day_n yea_o in_o one_o hour_n than_o they_o do_v before_o in_o many_o year_n there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o art_n and_o skill_n to_o get_v rest_n and_o quiet_a to_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v trouble_v the_o gospel_n be_v a_o mystery_n in_o this_o thing_n and_o when_o god_n acquaint_v the_o soul_n with_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o this_o thing_n than_o rest_n come_v on_o in_o a_o sweet_a and_o gracious_a manner_n it_o be_v true_a it_o be_v the_o hard_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n for_o to_o close_v with_o christ_n and_o to_o get_v true_a ease_n and_o rest_n to_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v hard_o in_o itself_o till_o god_n make_v know_v the_o mystery_n of_o faith_n to_o the_o soul_n but_o when_o that_o be_v do_v than_o the_o soul_n find_v abundance_n of_o ease_n and_o rest_n and_o that_o in_o a_o little_a while_n as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o man_n that_o think_v by_o main_a strength_n to_o do_v some_o work_n that_o indeed_o can_v only_o be_v do_v by_o skill_n and_o art_n he_o may_v be_v toil_a labour_a and_o tire_v himself_o but_o yet_o can_v do_v it_o whereas_o another_o man_n that_o understand_v the_o mystery_n of_o it_o he_o come_v in_o and_o in_o a_o little_a time_n by_o his_o skill_n and_o art_n can_v do_v that_o with_o ease_n that_o the_o other_o man_n be_v toil_a and_o labour_v about_o a_o long_a while_n and_o yet_o can_v not_o do_v it_o as_o you_o know_v in_o all_o trade_n that_o have_v a_o mystery_n in_o they_o you_o that_o be_v navigator_n that_o understand_v the_o mystery_n of_o that_o art_n if_o any_o unskilful_a man_n shall_v come_v and_o think_v to_o do_v some_o of_o your_o work_n by_o his_o main_a strength_n he_o may_v labour_v and_o toil_n even_o his_o heart_n out_o and_o not_o do_v that_o work_n that_o you_o can_v do_v easy_o in_o a_o little_a time_n so_o many_o poor_a soul_n be_v labour_v and_o toil_a that_o these_o trouble_a soul_n of_o they_o may_v be_v but_o quiet_a they_o be_v labour_v and_o they_o will_v perform_v duty_n and_o fast_o and_o pray_v so_o many_o time_n in_o a_o day_n and_o so_o go_v on_o in_o a_o tiresome_a way_n whereas_o after_o the_o
christ_n there_o be_v no_o return_n of_o any_o guilt_n if_o christ_n do_v undertake_v for_o they_o that_o come_v to_o he_o though_o christ_n do_v undertake_v for_o what_o be_v past_a and_o what_o be_v to_o come_v yet_o as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o malefactor_n though_o perhaps_o he_o have_v his_o pardon_n and_o be_v receive_v into_o favor_n yet_o he_o may_v think_v there_o be_v some_o alteration_n again_o but_o now_o the_o guilt_n that_o be_v upon_o thou_o shall_v never_o return_v upon_o thou_o again_o though_o a_o man_n have_v a_o pardon_n if_o he_o do_v not_o carry_v himself_o well_o the_o former_a gild_n return_v again_o but_o when_o once_o the_o soul_n be_v pardon_v the_o former_a gild_n never_o return_v again_o the_o lord_n will_v blot_v out_o all_o their_o sin_n and_o remember_v they_o no_o more_o as_o when_o you_o cast_v a_o thing_n out_o of_o your_o ship_n into_o the_o bottom_n of_o the_o sea_n you_o never_o look_v for_o it_o again_o so_o it_o be_v with_o god_n all_o your_o endeavour_v to_o obey_v to_o the_o uttermost_a that_o we_o can_v there_o be_v many_o man_n will_v require_v thing_n that_o be_v hard_a and_o beyond_o strength_n i_o but_o when_o there_o be_v endeavour_n to_o do_v that_o that_o be_v require_v that_o will_v be_v accept_v wherefore_o we_o be_v to_o know_v this_o that_o the_o law_n accept_v of_o no_o endeavour_n though_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n shall_v strive_v their_o heart_n out_o to_o obey_v to_o come_v to_o the_o height_n of_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o law_n the_o law_n do_v not_o accept_v of_o those_o endeavour_n it_o be_v true_a when_o the_o soul_n come_v unto_o christ_n in_o the_o gospel_n when_o the_o soul_n come_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n endeavour_n be_v accept_v therefore_o do_v not_o say_v that_o evil_a we_o shall_v quite_o loose_v the_o habit_n that_o be_v quite_o loose_a the_o habit_n by_o one_o act_n and_o not_o only_o loose_v the_o habit_n that_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o particular_a evil_n that_o we_o do_v but_o lose_v all_o habit_n of_o all_o good_a whatsoever_o and_o that_o by_o one_o act_n now_o this_o be_v a_o thing_n above_o nature_n this_o be_v only_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n god_n make_v such_o a_o covenant_n it_o run_v upon_o such_o term_n as_o if_o adam_n do_v but_o sin_n in_o one_o thing_n he_o must_v die_v that_o be_v his_o soul_n as_o well_o as_o his_o body_n must_v die_v a_o spiritual_a death_n and_o so_o loose_a all_o habit_n of_o all_o grace_n and_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o we_o be_v by_o nature_n dead_a in_o sin_n further_o such_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o law_n that_o suppose_v god_n shall_v restore_v we_o all_o to_o be_v as_o perfect_a as_o ever_o adam_n be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o innocency_n void_a of_o all_o sin_n and_o have_v the_o image_n of_o god_n perfect_a and_o then_o god_n shall_v come_v and_o put_v we_o upon_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n again_o i_o say_v if_o we_o than_o shall_v but_o fail_v in_o any_o one_o thing_n it_o will_v break_v we_o so_o as_o we_o shall_v loose_v all_o our_o ability_n to_o perform_v any_o duty_n ever_o after_o this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o law_n but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o the_o gospel_n though_o we_o sin_n against_o the_o gospel_n we_o do_v not_o present_o loose_v all_o our_o habit_n of_o grace_n but_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o difference_n that_o though_o adam_n when_o he_o sin_v against_o the_o law_n he_o lose_v all_o his_o habit_n to_o do_v any_o good_a after_o and_o that_o though_o we_o sin_n against_o the_o gospel_n yet_o we_o do_v not_o loose_v those_o habit_n that_o i_o shall_v show_v afterward_o when_o i_o shall_v come_v to_o show_v that_o the_o yoke_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v easy_a than_o that_o of_o the_o law_n and_o that_o be_v the_o four_o thing_n in_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n five_o the_o first_o thing_n be_v this_o that_o the_o law_n upon_o every_o breach_n it_o do_v take_v advantage_n against_o the_o soul_n present_o i_o say_v take_v advantage_n against_o the_o soul_n present_o and_o bind_v it_o over_o to_o death_n to_o eternal_a death_n present_o bind_v it_o over_o yea_o and_o bind_v over_o by_o god_n justice_n by_o such_o abond_n as_o have_v more_o strength_n in_o it_o then_o all_o the_o power_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n be_v able_a to_o break_v as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v do_v that_o that_o be_v evil_a it_o may_v be_v the_o law_n have_v not_o present_a execution_n upon_o he_o i_o but_o he_o be_v bind_v over_o present_o and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o in_o the_o second_o place_n the_o law_n pass_v sentence_n the_o bind_n over_o that_o be_v the_o guilt_n but_o the_o law_n pass_v sentence_n upon_o the_o sinner_n and_o condemn_v it_o the_o soul_n be_v present_o under_o the_o sentence_n of_o condemnation_n three_o the_o law_n put_v the_o sinner_n under_o a_o curse_n for_o so_o it_o be_v in_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o the_o 27._o of_o deu._n curse_a be_v every_o one_o that_o abide_v not_o in_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v write_v in_o the_o book_n of_o the_o law_n to_o do_v it_o mark_v every_o one_o that_o abide_v not_o in_o every_o thing_n he_o be_v if_o at_o last_o you_o shall_v offend_v in_o any_o one_o particular_a you_o be_v cast_v for_o all_o and_o all_o that_o you_o have_v do_v before_o be_v utter_o reject_v it_o will_v take_v advantage_n understand_v it_o and_o whether_o it_o understand_v it_o or_o not_o yet_o certain_o it_o be_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n seven_o a_o seven_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n be_v this_o that_o when_o once_o the_o sinner_n have_v break_v it_o the_o law_n can_v be_v satisfy_v with_o any_o obedience_n which_o may_v make_v amends_o afterward_o by_o any_o thing_n that_o the_o sinner_n can_v do_v suppose_v a_o man_n shall_v be_v never_o so_o angry_a and_o offend_v he_o that_o have_v offend_v he_o may_v make_v amends_o again_o a_o servant_n think_v though_o i_o have_v offend_v my_o master_n and_o do_v so_o many_o fault_n yet_o i_o will_v make_v amends_o for_o al._n so_o many_o people_n think_v though_o we_o have_v break_v the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o live_v a_o great_a while_n in_o sin_n and_o do_v that_o which_o be_v evil_a yet_o we_o will_v make_v amends_o again_o and_o we_o will_v give_v alm_n and_o come_v to_o church_n and_o the_o like_a these_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o many_o poor_a ignorant_a heart_n that_o do_v not_o understand_v upon_o what_o term_n they_o stand_v with_o god_n all_o the_o child_n of_o man_n stand_v before_o god_n either_o under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n or_o under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n one_o of_o the_o two_o now_o those_o kind_n of_o man_n that_o reason_n after_o this_o manner_n sure_o they_o be_v not_o acquaint_v with_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n they_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o now_o let_v they_o know_v that_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n admit_v of_o no_o such_o amends_o as_o they_o speak_v of_o but_o when_o once_o you_o have_v break_v the_o law_n all_o that_o ever_o you_o can_v do_v if_o you_o can_v live_v a_o thousand_o year_n never_o so_o strict_o or_o be_v willing_a to_o suffer_v never_o so_o much_o for_o god_n
man_n of_o any_o way_n of_o redemption_n of_o any_o way_n of_o deliverance_n but_o mere_o show_v unto_o we_o our_o misery_n and_o so_o leave_v we_o i_o do_v not_o mean_v the_o law_n that_o be_v in_o bondage_n under_o the_o law_n appear_v be_v this_o that_o it_o be_v such_o a_o law_n as_o there_o can_v be_v no_o appeal_n from_o it_o no_o nor_o no_o repeal_n of_o it_o though_o it_o be_v thus_o strict_a and_o thus_o severe_a yet_o i_o say_v there_o be_v no_o appeal_n from_o it_o nor_o no_o repeal_n of_o it_o there_o be_v many_o law_n that_o we_o may_v appeal_v from_o one_o to_o another_o or_o if_o that_o law_n be_v hard_a it_o may_v be_v call_v in_o again_o we_o can_v appeal_v from_o the_o authority_n of_o this_o law_n nor_o can_v it_o be_v repeal_v you_o will_v say_v this_o exclud_v we_o from_o all_o help_n though_o there_o be_v many_o hard_a law_n make_v by_o man_n and_o as_o long_o as_o they_o stand_v in_o force_n people_n be_v in_o a_o very_a sad_a condition_n yet_o there_o may_v be_v mean_n to_o repeal_v they_o but_o as_o for_o this_o law_n there_o can_v it_o seem_v be_v no_o appeal_n from_o it_o nor_o repeal_n of_o it_o may_v we_o not_o appeal_v from_o god_n justice_n to_o god_n mercy_n seat_n i_o have_v indeed_o speak_v of_o such_o a_o expression_n but_o that_o expession_n must_v be_v wary_o understand_v for_o the_o truth_n be_v there_o be_v no_o proper_a appeal_n from_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n to_o his_o mercy_n when_o the_o sinner_n come_v to_o christ_n it_o have_v the_o pardon_n seal_v in_o the_o court_n of_o justice_n as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o court_n of_o mercy_n there_o be_v no_o soul_n that_o be_v save_v but_o god_n justice_n be_v as_o well_o satisfy_v as_o his_o mercy_n be_v glorify_v nor_o no_o repeal_n of_o this_o law_n what_o must_v the_o law_n stand_v in_o force_n then_o yes_o the_o law_n shall_v stand_v in_o force_n and_o yet_o there_o shall_v be_v thousand_o of_o soul_n save_v how_o be_v that_o you_o will_v say_v this_o be_v the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o the_o law_n shall_v stand_v in_o force_n and_o yet_o man_n shall_v be_v save_v there_o shall_v be_v a_o way_n to_o save_v man_n for_o all_o this_o certain_o if_o the_o law_n go_v on_o in_o its_o course_n one_o will_v think_v that_o it_o will_v carry_v on_o all_o mankind_n to_o eternal_a destruction_n yea_o and_o so_o it_o will_v have_v do_v but_o only_o for_o this_o great_a saviour_n and_o redeemer_n jesus_n christ_n that_o call_v sinner_n to_o he_o that_o they_o may_v have_v rest_n he_o come_v and_o put_v himself_o under_o the_o law_n and_o what_o the_o law_n require_v he_o do_v and_o he_o suffer_v so_o that_o here_o be_v all_o the_o alteration_n the_o law_n go_v on_o and_o have_v its_o course_n only_o whereas_o it_o may_v have_v require_v to_o have_v have_v the_o course_n of_o it_o upon_o ourselves_o in_o person_n now_o god_n be_v content_a that_o it_o shall_v have_v its_o course_n upon_o our_o security_n when_o a_o man_n owe_v a_o debt_n the_o law_n require_v performance_n it_o be_v one_o thing_n to_o have_v the_o law_n repeal_v and_o a_o other_o to_o have_v the_o debtor_n deliver_v if_o a_o sureâ—â—_n will_v come_v and_o undertake_v the_o debt_n he_o be_v deliver_v though_o he_o have_v not_o pay_v it_o &_o yet_o the_o law_n have_v its_o course_n for_o the_o surety_n discharge_v what_o the_o debtor_n shall_v have_v do_v so_o the_o way_n of_o salvation_n for_o any_o soul_n it_o be_v not_o either_o by_o appeal_n from_o the_o law_n or_o by_o the_o repeal_n of_o the_o law_n but_o we_o must_v look_v upon_o the_o law_n to_o have_v its_o course_n only_o to_o have_v its_o course_n upon_o christ_n our_o surety_n who_o have_v full_o satisfy_v the_o law_n and_o christ_n look_v thus_o upon_o be_v the_o true_a object_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o except_o we_o apprehend_v christ_n thus_o as_o one_o make_v under_o the_o law_n as_o the_o scripture_n say_v and_o one_o that_o do_v endure_v the_o law_n to_o have_v its_o course_n upon_o he_o and_o so_o to_o satisfy_v the_o law_n except_o we_o look_v upon_o christ_n thus_o we_o look_v not_o upon_o he_o as_o the_o right_a object_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o christ_n he_o thus_o call_v upon_o you_o that_o be_v weary_a and_o heavy_a lade_v to_o come_v to_o he_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v poor_a sinner_n that_o be_v under_o such_o a_o covenant_n as_o this_o be_v you_o know_v that_o though_o it_o be_v not_o repeal_v i_o have_v come_v and_o put_v myself_o under_o this_o law_n it_o have_v have_v its_o course_n upon_o i_o come_v to_o i_o and_o the_o law_n shall_v be_v sattisfy_v it_o shall_v have_v nothing_o to_o say_v against_o you_o but_o you_o shall_v have_v through_o rest_n in_o i_o come_v therefore_o to_o i_o eleven_o the_o eleven_o thing_n in_o the_o law_n it_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v stir_v up_o so_o much_o the_o more_o you_o have_v a_o notable_a expression_n for_o this_o in_o the_o example_n of_o paul_n who_o feel_v it_o thus_o in_o himself_o in_o rom._n 7.5_o for_o when_o we_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n the_o motion_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v by_o the_o law_n do_v work_v in_o our_o member_n to_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n unto_o death_n and_o again_o in_o ver_fw-la 8._o for_o sin_n take_v occasion_n by_o the_o commandment_n wrought_v in_o i_o all_o manner_n of_o concupiscence_n it_o take_v occasion_n by_o the_o commandment_n there_o be_v many_o people_n that_o be_v the_o worse_a by_o hear_v the_o law_n reveal_v unto_o they_o until_o god_n please_v to_o overcome_v their_o heart_n by_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n now_o put_v all_o these_o together_o and_o the_o soul_n that_o come_v to_o be_v enlighten_v to_o understand_v these_o do_v you_o not_o think_v that_o such_o a_o soul_n will_v be_v burden_v be_v it_o not_o a_o burden_n to_o be_v in_o this_o condition_n be_v it_o possible_a that_o the_o soul_n can_v have_v any_o rest_n in_o this_o condition_n you_o will_v say_v these_o thing_n be_v hard_a in_o themselves_o but_o first_o if_o you_o do_v but_o understand_v the_o infinite_a holiness_n there_o be_v in_o god_n and_o the_o infinite_a justice_n of_o god_n with_o who_o you_o have_v to_o deal_v and_o if_o you_o do_v but_o understand_v the_o perfect_a condition_n that_o god_n do_v make_v man_n in_o at_o the_o first_o present_v before_o your_o soul_n the_o infinite_a holiness_n and_o justice_n of_o the_o great_a god_n with_o who_o you_o have_v to_o do_v and_o then_o present_a before_o your_o soul_n that_o perfect_a state_n that_o god_n do_v make_v man_n in_o innocency_n and_o then_o these_o thing_n will_v be_v clear_a unto_o you_o and_o if_o these_o thing_n be_v only_o preach_v to_o you_o and_o nothing_o else_o they_o will_v seem_v to_o be_v hard_o but_o it_o be_v all_o in_o order_n to_o this_o invitation_n of_o christ_n chap._n viii_o three_o conclusion_n arise_v from_o the_o former_a doctrine_n concern_v the_o burden_n under_o the_o law_n namely_o 1._o that_o man_n by_o nature_n be_v in_o a_o evil_a case_n 2._o that_o it_o be_v a_o mighty_a work_n to_o save_v a_o soul_n 3._o that_o those_o vain_a thought_n whereby_o man_n think_v to_o pacify_v their_o conscience_n will_v stand_v they_o in_o no_o stead_n now_o upon_o the_o hear_n of_o these_o thing_n we_o may_v true_o draw_v such_o conclusion_n as_o these_o first_o that_o certain_o man_n be_v in_o a_o ill_a case_n by_o nature_n it_o be_v observe_v of_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n when_o
pharaoh_n do_v increase_v their_o bondage_n the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o that_o the_o people_n see_v that_o they_o be_v in_o a_o ill_a case_n so_o when_o we_o understand_v what_o a_o condition_n we_o be_v in_o under_o this_o bondage_n we_o may_v conclude_v that_o very_o man_n be_v in_o a_o ill_a case_n by_o nature_n second_o and_o a_o second_o conclusion_n may_v be_v draw_v hence_o that_o it_o be_v a_o mighty_a work_n to_o save_v a_o soul_n it_o be_v not_o a_o slight_a thing_n for_o a_o soul_n to_o come_v to_o be_v save_v there_o must_v be_v great_a thing_n do_v by_o god_n to_o save_v a_o soul_n many_o people_n they_o confess_v it_o be_v true_a they_o be_v sinner_n but_o they_o cry_v to_o god_n to_o have_v mercy_n on_o they_o and_o so_o they_o think_v it_o be_v present_o do_v but_o do_v you_o consider_v of_o the_o condition_n that_o you_o be_v in_o natural_o and_o of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n you_o will_v then_o conclude_v it_o be_v a_o mighty_a work_n of_o god_n to_o save_v any_o soul_n and_o that_o you_o have_v need_n fall_v upon_o the_o seek_n of_o your_o salvation_n betimes_o and_o then_o three_o hence_o will_v follow_v this_o conclusion_n also_o that_o those_o vain_a thought_n of_o man_n that_o they_o have_v have_v for_o pacify_v their_o conscience_n and_o the_o quiet_v of_o their_o heart_n will_v stand_v they_o in_o no_o stead_n as_o thus_o many_o they_o reason_n thus_o i_o be_o not_o so_o bad_a as_o other_o what_o if_o you_o be_v not_o if_o you_o be_v under_o the_o law_n you_o be_v cast_v a_o thousand_o thousand_o time_n over_o you_o will_v say_v that_o you_o do_v some_o good_a thing_n and_o sometime_o come_v to_o church_n and_o pray_v to_o god_n but_o what_o be_v this_o to_o the_o keep_n of_o the_o law_n if_o thou_o be_v in_o thy_o natural_a estate_n thy_o reason_n after_o this_o manner_n do_v argue_v that_o thou_o do_v look_v after_o salvation_n by_o what_o thou_o have_v do_v and_o for_o man_n to_o say_v i_o do_v what_o i_o can_v and_o i_o be_o sorry_a with_o all_o my_o heart_n that_o i_o can_v do_v no_o better_o these_o be_v not_o reason_v that_o will_v enable_v thou_o to_o stand_v with_o comfort_n before_o the_o infinite_a righteous_a god_n thou_o must_v know_v in_o what_o state_n thou_o be_v in_o under_o the_o law_n and_o how_o thou_o be_v cast_v by_o the_o law_n these_o be_v not_o arguing_n that_o can_v bring_v rest_n to_o thy_o soul_n if_o it_o can_v christ_n will_v never_o have_v call_v in_o this_o manner_n but_o you_o must_v know_v that_o such_o be_v your_o condition_n that_o all_o the_o angel_n in_o heaven_n and_o man_n in_o the_o world_n can_v give_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n and_o if_o you_o do_v understand_v this_o you_o will_v thereby_o go_v away_o convince_v of_o this_o truth_n well_o i_o see_v that_o there_o be_v a_o burden_n upon_o i_o howsoever_o i_o have_v not_o be_v sensible_a of_o it_o and_o it_o be_v such_o a_o burden_n as_o will_v press_v i_o down_o to_o eternal_a misery_n and_o i_o see_v now_o by_o this_o that_o i_o have_v need_n of_o a_o christ_n certain_o if_o congregation_n be_v sensible_a of_o this_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n oh_o how_o will_v their_o soul_n rejoice_v in_o this_o and_o praise_v the_o lord_n that_o their_o ear_n be_v bless_v to_o hear_v such_o a_o sound_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o this_o come_v to_o i_o and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v i_o appeal_v to_o you_o whether_o the_o open_n of_o the_o law_n be_v not_o of_o use_n to_o make_v you_o come_v to_o christ_n there_o be_v a_o great_a many_o wanton_a spirit_n that_o call_v those_o minister_n of_o god_n that_o seek_v out_o of_o conscience_n to_o do_v good_a to_o soul_n and_o to_o draw_v they_o out_o of_o their_o natural_a estate_n legal_a man_n legal_a preacher_n and_o the_o like_a i_o appeal_v to_o your_o conscience_n upon_o the_o knowledge_n of_o these_o thing_n whether_o you_o will_v not_o come_v to_o know_v the_o way_n of_o come_v to_o christ_n better_a than_o you_o do_v before_o if_o i_o shall_v have_v name_v the_o name_n of_o christ_n five_o hundred_o time_n over_o and_o over_o again_o will_v you_o have_v come_v to_o understand_v the_o mystery_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n so_o much_o as_o by_o hear_v what_o the_o difference_n be_v between_o the_o first_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o be_v under_o the_o law_n and_o to_o tell_v you_o that_o christ_n come_v into_o the_o world_n heavy_a yoke_n and_o bondage_n and_o in_o this_o bless_a scripture_n he_o call_v all_o soul_n that_o do_v feel_v this_o yoke_n and_o burden_n to_o come_v to_o he_o that_o so_o they_o may_v have_v a_o legal_a way_n and_o his_o performance_n may_v be_v rather_o a_o burden_n than_o that_o which_o shall_v do_v he_o good_a in_o the_o conclusion_n and_o bring_v he_o to_o life_n and_o except_o he_o do_v come_v to_o know_v furhe_a than_o yet_o he_o do_v to_o know_v the_o evangelical_a performance_n of_o duty_n he_o can_v have_v true_a rest_n in_o his_o soul_n now_o this_o as_o the_o other_o be_v a_o point_n of_o great_a consequence_n to_o many_o it_o may_v be_v divers_a that_o read_v this_o book_n may_v not_o so_o clear_o understand_v what_o this_o be_v they_o may_v not_o feel_v any_o such_o the_o law_n require_v yet_o i_o may_v do_v some_o outward_a performance_n now_o for_o i_o to_o go_v about_o such_o a_o work_n to_o endeavour_v and_o strive_v to_o do_v all_o the_o work_n that_o the_o law_n require_v not_o only_o the_o outward_a part_n but_o the_o will_v work_v and_o to_o be_v put_v upon_o to_o struggle_v and_o strive_v to_o do_v that_o which_o i_o have_v no_o inward_a principle_n to_o do_v that_o must_v needs_o be_v burdensome_a all_o motion_n of_o nature_n that_o be_v from_o a_o external_a principle_n be_v violent_a and_o so_o tedious_a heavy_a and_o troublesome_a so_o this_o motion_n to_o duty_n that_o come_v not_o from_o a_o inward_a principle_n of_o heart_n but_o be_v mere_o legal_a conscience_n stand_v to_o put_v the_o soul_n upon_o duty_n but_o do_v not_o put_v any_o principle_n into_o the_o soul_n to_o do_v it_o this_o be_v a_o violent_a motion_n and_o those_o that_o have_v the_o experience_n of_o this_o find_v it_o tedious_a heavy_a and_o troublesome_a now_o here_o lie_v the_o burden_n for_o it_o be_v not_o according_a to_o those_o vain_a conceit_n of_o man_n that_o the_o duty_n ought_v not_o to_o be_v do_v because_o they_o have_v no_o inward_a principle_n to_o do_v it_o but_o here_o be_v the_o burden_n that_o conscience_n bind_v you_o to_o do_v it_o you_o must_v do_v it_o though_o you_o have_v no_o principle_n in_o you_o to_o do_v it_o the_o second_o burden_n of_o legal_a performance_n 2._o legal_a performance_n have_v a_o great_a burden_n in_o they_o because_o there_o be_v in_o all_o man_n that_o be_v but_o under_o the_o law_n law_n be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o burden_n certain_o in_o those_o respect_v christ_n can_v be_v say_v to_o give_v we_o rest_n in_o what_o respect_n the_o law_n be_v good_a and_o not_o burdensome_a to_o the_o saint_n the_o law_n certain_o be_v good_a as_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o rom._n 7._o even_o at_o that_o time_n when_o his_o soul_n be_v mighty_o trouble_v with_o his_o corruption_n and_o he_o even_o cry_v out_o oh_o wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o the_o chapter_n but_o yet_o in_o the_o 12._o verse_n he_o profess_v that_o the_o law_n be_v holy_a and_o the_o commandment_n holy_a and_o just_o and_o good_a now_o than_o that_o that_o be_v holy_a and_o just_o and_o good_a certain_o creation_n when_o he_o be_v in_o his_o innocency_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v deliver_v from_o that_o as_o it_o be_v a_o copy_n and_o extract_v of_o god_n image_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n it_o be_v rather_o renew_v by_o christ_n than_o abolish_v by_o christ_n three_o the_o law_n it_o be_v a_o glass_n wherein_o we_o be_v to_o see_v our_o own_o face_n wherein_o we_o be_v to_o see_v how_o far_o we_o be_v decline_v from_o the_o image_n in_o which_o we_o first_o be_v make_v and_o so_o far_o christ_n have_v not_o deliver_v we_o from_o it_o neither_o for_o he_o will_v have_v we_o still_o to_o look_v into_o the_o law_n as_o into_o a_o glass_n to_o see_v how_o far_o we_o be_v come_v short_a of_o that_o that_o god_n do_v require_v of_o we_o and_o that_o god_n do_v enable_v we_o to_o do_v that_o be_v a_o three_o consideration_n of_o the_o law_n four_o the_o law_n be_v a_o revelation_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n it_o reveal_v what_o be_v the_o holy_a and_o righteous_a will_n of_o god_n towards_o his_o creature_n and_o in_o that_o consideration_n we_o be_v not_o deliver_v from_o it_o neither_o we_o be_v to_o look_v into_o that_o to_o see_v what_o the_o wantonness_n that_o have_v possess_v the_o spirit_n of_o some_o it_o be_v never_o needful_a to_o spend_v one_o quarter_n or_o minute_n of_o a_o hour_n upon_o it_o that_o place_n in_o james_n 2.8_o burden_n in_o these_o respect_n but_o bless_v god_n for_o the_o law_n and_o they_o account_v it_o their_o inheritance_n and_o the_o joy_n of_o their_o soul_n they_o bless_v god_n that_o ever_o they_o know_v it_o and_o their_o heart_n lie_v under_o the_o power_n of_o it_o and_o they_o be_v willing_a to_o order_v their_o life_n by_o it_o quest_n but_o then_o what_o be_v we_o deliver_v from_o in_o the_o law_n by_o christ_n first_o from_o the_o rigour_n of_o it_o christ_n deliver_v we_o from_o the_o load_n of_o the_o rigour_n of_o it_o from_o this_o rigour_n that_o it_o require_v perfect_a obedience_n so_o far_o we_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o rigour_n of_o the_o law_n and_o yet_o this_o may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v rigorous_a in_o regard_n of_o our_o weakness_n for_o we_o have_v once_o power_n but_o now_o the_o lord_n do_v take_v off_o the_o rigour_n in_o regard_n of_o our_o weakness_n and_o so_o rigorous_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o violent_a and_o rigorous_a way_n that_o it_o do_v ease_n and_o rest_n of_o a_o gracious_a heart_n to_o the_o mind_n of_o a_o saint_n a_o believer_n that_o now_o he_o come_v to_o receive_v the_o law_n from_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o mediator_n there_o be_v many_o that_o speak_v of_o deliverance_n from_o the_o law_n as_o it_o come_v by_o moses_n but_o if_o we_o understand_v thing_n aright_o we_o have_v no_o such_o cause_n to_o think_v that_o necessary_a to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o law_n as_o it_o come_v by_o moses_n in_o one_o sense_n that_o be_v thus_o moses_n be_v a_o type_n of_o christ_n as_o a_o mediator_n for_o so_o he_o be_v call_v a_o mediator_n in_o gal._n 3.19_o it_o be_v ordain_v by_o angel_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o mediator_n god_n make_v use_n of_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o angel_n in_o deliver_v the_o law_n and_o he_o give_v it_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o mediator_n not_o to_o the_o people_n immediate_o for_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o bear_v it_o but_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o moses_n because_o he_o be_v to_o bring_v the_o law_n from_o god_n unto_o they_o and_o it_o be_v not_o immediate_o give_v unto_o they_o but_o in_o his_o hand_n as_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o mediator_n now_o moses_n be_v call_v a_o mediator_n here_o as_o a_o type_n of_o christ_n as_o he_o be_v a_o type_n of_o christ_n as_o he_o be_v a_o type_n of_o christ_n in_o diverse_a respect_n so_o in_o this_o and_o he_o tipify_v christ_n in_o this_o particular_a that_o the_o law_n to_o believer_n come_v not_o unto_o they_o mere_o from_o god_n as_o a_o righteous_a and_o just_a god_n as_o their_o judge_n but_o come_v unto_o they_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o christ_n as_o their_o mediator_n and_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o comfort_n in_o the_o law_n to_o receive_v it_o thus_o to_o receive_v it_o from_o the_o hand_n of_o christ_n who_o be_v their_o mediator_n and_o as_o i_o show_v before_o who_o be_v their_o advocate_n for_o so_o he_o be_v call_v in_o scripture_n that_o now_o they_o shall_v receive_v the_o law_n by_o his_o hand_n that_o be_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o the_o father_n to_o be_v their_o advocate_n to_o plead_v for_o they_o when_o they_o shall_v through_o infirmity_n break_v the_o law_n this_o be_v a_o mighty_a rest_n to_o the_o soul_n therefore_o believer_n be_v to_o look_v upon_o the_o law_n come_v from_o god_n but_o come_v from_o god_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o mediator_n to_o look_v upon_o their_o mediator_n as_o indeed_o their_o lawgiver_n not_o only_o hand_v the_o law_n to_o they_o as_o moses_n do_v but_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o lawgiver_n himself_o christ_n the_o mediator_n hand_n the_o law_n to_o they_o yea_o be_v their_o lawgiver_n and_o receive_v the_o law_n for_o they_o now_o this_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o great_a ease_n a_o great_a rest_n to_o the_o soul_n if_o it_o understand_v this_o aright_o three_o in_o christ_n now_o thy_o condition_n be_v such_o that_o though_o there_o be_v never_o so_o many_o imperfection_n never_o so_o many_o weakness_n yea_o strong_a corruption_n yet_o if_o there_o be_v but_o the_o least_o spiritual_a good_a the_o least_o work_n of_o god_n grace_n in_o thou_o the_o lord_n have_v a_o special_a eye_n to_o that_o little_a good_a that_o there_o be_v in_o thou_o and_o all_o thy_o corruption_n all_o thy_o imperfection_n shall_v not_o hinder_v the_o acceptation_n of_o the_o little_a spark_n of_o good_a that_o be_v in_o thy_o soul_n this_o be_v our_o freedom_n by_o christ_n for_o in_o the_o open_n of_o the_o law_n there_o i_o show_v that_o whatever_o good_a man_n do_v do_v be_v under_o the_o law_n let_v it_o be_v what_o it_o will_v yet_o except_o it_o be_v perfect_a it_o be_v all_o reject_v all_o that_o be_v in_o their_o natural_a condition_n and_o under_o the_o first_o covenant_n whatever_o they_o do_v flax_n as_o the_o bruise_a reed_n yet_o they_o be_v accept_v of_o god_n have_v but_o the_o least_o spark_n of_o any_o good_a at_o all_o in_o they_o this_o be_v a_o mighty_a ease_n to_o the_o soul_n of_o those_o that_o labour_n under_o the_o bondage_n of_o the_o law_n that_o before_o see_v so_o much_o corruption_n in_o their_o heart_n they_o have_v little_a hope_n of_o acceptation_n of_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v in_o they_o now_o the_o lord_n have_v regard_n to_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a be_v it_o never_o so_o small_a yea_o and_o he_o will_v find_v it_o out_o too_o perhaps_o thy_o grace_n may_v be_v so_o small_a that_o it_o may_v be_v bury_v in_o the_o heâ—â—_n of_o corruption_n that_o thou_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o find_v it_o out_o the_o condition_n of_o some_o christian_n be_v as_o a_o maid_n that_o shall_v go_v in_o the_o morning_n to_o the_o hearth_n and_o there_o rake_v up_o and_o down_o in_o the_o ash_n to_o see_v if_o she_o can_v find_v some_o spark_n of_o fire_n and_o she_o find_v none_o and_o be_v ready_a to_o think_v there_o be_v none_o there_o but_o perhaps_o there_o may_v some_o spark_n lie_v in_o a_o corner_n though_o she_o find_v it_o not_o so_o it_o be_v here_o corruption_n in_o the_o heart_n be_v like_o the_o ash_n and_o grace_n be_v like_o some_o spark_n that_o lie_v in_o a_o corner_n and_o when_o poor_a soul_n go_v to_o examine_v their_o heart_n they_o see_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o ash_n a_o great_a deal_n of_o corruption_n and_o be_v ready_a to_o conclude_v the_o fire_n be_v out_o no_o spark_n there_o i_o but_o though_o rhou_fw-mi can_v not_o find_v a_o spark_n there_o yet_o be_v in_o christ_n god_n will_v find_v it_o when_o thou_o can_v not_o thyself_o if_o there_o be_v any_o that_o lie_v in_o any_o corner_n as_o we_o hope_v there_o be_v some_o spark_n in_o many_o though_o there_o be_v so_o much_o corruption_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o many_o godly_a people_n that_o we_o wonder_v where_o their_o grace_n lie_v so_o much_o passion_n frowardness_n and_o the_o like_a well_o be_v it_o indeed_o that_o these_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n under_o the_o law_n that_o corruption_n that_o do_v appear_v in_o they_o will_v cause_v all_o to_o be_v cast_v off_o whatever_o may_v lie_v secret_o in_o their_o heart_n god_n will_v cast_v it_o off_o but_o now_o if_o they_o be_v such_o as_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o lord_n have_v bring_v they_o to_o christ_n this_o be_v the_o rest_n and_o ease_n for_o their_o soul_n that_o all_o the_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o they_o shall_v not_o hinder_v the_o acceptation_n of_o the_o least_o spark_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o the_o lord_n have_v wrought_v in_o they_o four_o as_o the_o lord_n will_v find_v out_o every_o spark_n of_o good_a that_o be_v in_o they_o so_o even_o their_o desire_n and_o endeavour_n after_o the_o will_n of_o god_n though_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o attain_v to_o what_o they_o will_v it_o shall_v be_v accept_v as_o the_o deed_n the_o other_o be_v suppose_v you_o do_v not_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n yet_o if_o there_o be_v any_o habit_n any_o disposition_n any_o principle_n of_o grace_n though_o nothing_o be_v do_v though_o they_o can_v perceive_v any_o begin_n of_o it_o yet_o that_o shall_v be_v accept_v but_o this_o be_v further_a let_v they_o but_o strive_v to_o do_v god_n will_v let_v they_o labour_n after_o perfection_n and_o the_o lord_n accept_v the_o will_n for_o the_o deed_n hence_o in_o scripture_n those_o that_o be_v godly_a be_v call_v perfect_a as_o many_o as_o be_v perfect_a and_o be_v you_o perfect_a as_o your_o heavenly_a father_n be_v perfect_a quest_n you_o will_v say_v can_v we_o be_v perfect_a in_o this_o world_n answ_n no_o but_o this_o be_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n that_o those_o that_o come_v to_o christ_n the_o lord_n accept_v the_o will_n for_o the_o deed_n here_o be_v bless_a ease_n and_o rest_v for_o the_o soul_n in_o christ_n be_v thou_o under_o the_o law_n this_o can_v not_o be_v and_o though_o man_n say_v they_o do_v and_o they_o hope_v god_n will_v accept_v of_o their_o desire_n and_o endeavour_n it_o be_v true_a if_o thou_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n christ_n will_v accept_v
now_o this_o be_v a_o special_a thing_n to_o be_v speak_v of_o in_o this_o point_n how_o believer_n shall_v improve_v this_o and_o what_o it_o be_v that_o they_o shall_v learn_v by_o this_o and_o how_o helpful_a this_o will_v be_v to_o they_o and_o something_o for_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o those_o that_o doubt_v that_o they_o be_v not_o believer_n but_o we_o can_v do_v all_o thing_n at_o once_o this_o shall_v suffice_v for_o the_o present_a the_o mere_a present_v to_o your_o soul_n what_o rest_v there_o be_v in_o christ_n from_o the_o load_n of_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n from_o the_o load_n that_o many_o feel_v to_o be_v upon_o their_o soul_n through_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n chap._n xxxi_o contain_v divers_a consequence_n from_o the_o rest_n believer_n have_v from_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n and_o lesson_n they_o be_v teach_v from_o thence_o to_o proceed_v now_o there_o be_v divers_a thing_n that_o follow_v from_o hence_o from_o the_o rest_n that_o we_o have_v in_o christ_n from_o the_o burden_n and_o load_n of_o the_o law_n i_o shall_v speak_v very_o brief_o of_o they_o and_o so_o pass_v to_o what_o remain_v in_o the_o next_o burden_n and_o rest_n to_o that_o from_o hence_o follow_v exceed_v help_n unto_o believer_n against_o divers_a temptation_n that_o do_v exceed_o trouble_v the_o peace_n and_o rest_n of_o their_o soul_n if_o they_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o law_n in_o those_o several_a respect_n as_o at_o large_a have_v be_v open_v to_o you_o 1._o then_o first_o from_o the_o meditation_n of_o this_o their_o delivery_n they_o may_v have_v rest_n and_o ease_n from_o this_o temptation_n that_o because_o of_o some_o imperfection_n weakness_n and_o distemper_n of_o heart_n and_o sin_n that_o they_o be_v guilty_a of_o therefore_o they_o have_v no_o interest_n at_o all_o in_o christ_n they_o have_v no_o interest_n to_o believe_v in_o christ_n because_o of_o that_o the_o strength_n of_o this_o temptation_n can_v stand_v with_o the_o right_a knowledge_n of_o christ_n as_o deliver_v from_o the_o law_n if_o christ_n deliver_v from_o the_o law_n than_o a_o interest_n in_o christ_n may_v stand_v though_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o keep_v the_o law_n yea_o and_o further_o we_o know_v this_o that_o it_o be_v usual_a with_o believer_n upon_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n in_o any_o thing_n to_o call_v their_o estate_n into_o question_n all_o into_o question_n certain_o if_o we_o know_v that_o we_o be_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n not_o by_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n not_o to_o be_v cast_v by_o the_o law_n we_o will_v never_o be_v so_o ready_a to_o call_v all_o into_o question_n upon_o any_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n that_o our_o conscience_n tell_v we_o we_o have_v be_v guilty_a of_o 2._o further_o this_o will_v marvellous_o help_v against_o this_o temptation_n likewise_o that_o god_n accept_v not_o of_o what_o we_o do_v because_o it_o be_v not_o perfect_a because_o it_o be_v not_o complete_a when_o believer_n look_v upon_o their_o duty_n that_o they_o do_v perform_v and_o see_v so_o many_o imperfection_n in_o they_o they_o dare_v not_o tender_v they_o up_o to_o god_n god_n be_v a_o infinite_a holy_a just_a god_n and_o they_o be_v ashamed_a of_o what_o they_o have_v do_v so_o as_o they_o dare_v not_o tender_v they_o up_o to_o god_n now_o the_o right_a knowledge_n of_o our_o deliverance_n from_o the_o law_n will_v help_v we_o against_o this_o temptation_n likewise_o remember_v o_o thou_o believer_n that_o thou_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n in_o a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n thou_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o he_o in_o christ_n through_o a_o better_a covenant_n than_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o law_n 3._o further_o this_o will_v help_v against_o this_o temptation_n also_o that_o many_o time_n be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o saint_n that_o because_o they_o hear_v of_o divers_a that_o have_v seem_v to_o have_v more_o than_o they_o have_v that_o have_v have_v more_o ability_n than_o they_o have_v have_v have_v be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o for_o god_n than_o they_o have_v do_v yet_o for_o all_o this_o have_v fall_v away_o and_o so_o it_o may_v be_v have_v perish_v for_o ever_o now_o say_v many_o a_o poor_a christian_a if_o such_o eminent_a man_n of_o such_o excellent_a ability_n that_o be_v able_a to_o do_v such_o great_a thing_n if_o they_o that_o go_v thus_o far_o fall_v away_o what_o shall_v become_v of_o such_o a_o poor_a creature_n as_o i_o be_o now_o by_o the_o understanding_n of_o our_o deliverance_n that_o we_o have_v from_o the_o law_n by_o christ_n we_o come_v to_o have_v help_n against_o this_o temptation_n for_o let_v a_o man_n have_v never_o such_o ability_n and_o be_v able_a to_o do_v never_o so_o much_o work_v yet_o this_o man_n may_v fall_v away_o when_o one_o that_o be_v a_o thousand_o time_n weak_a in_o regard_n of_o ability_n that_o have_v the_o least_o dram_n of_o true_a faith_n which_o bring_v he_o into_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n will_v stand_v such_o a_o one_o shall_v stand_v when_o the_o other_o fall_v if_o indeed_o thy_o stand_n do_v depend_v upon_o what_o strength_n thou_o have_v in_o thyself_o than_o thou_o have_v cause_n to_o lear_a that_o see_v such_o as_o do_v stand_v fall_v away_o what_o shall_v become_v of_o thou_o but_o we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o we_o be_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n in_o a_o way_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n our_o stand_n or_o fall_v do_v not_o depend_v upon_o any_o thing_n in_o ourselves_o but_o upon_o christ_n that_o have_v undertake_v for_o all_o those_o that_o be_v his_o member_n thou_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o be_v once_o bring_v into_o the_o covenant_n that_o will_v uphold_v thou_o though_o thou_o be_v weak_a when_o thousand_o of_o other_o that_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o natural_a ability_n and_o common_a gift_n of_o god_n spirit_n yet_o be_v not_o bring_v under_o this_o covenant_n may_v vanish_v yea_o have_v they_o the_o strength_n of_o a_o angel_n yet_o if_o not_o bring_v under_o this_o covenant_n of_o grace_n make_v with_o believer_n in_o christ_n they_o will_v fall_v and_o come_v to_o nothing_o whenas_o the_o weak_a believer_n that_o have_v to_o do_v with_o god_n through_o christ_n and_o not_o through_o the_o law_n such_o a_o one_o shall_v stand_v and_o not_o fall_v now_o the_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o law_n in_o christ_n will_v mighty_o help_v believer_n against_o these_o temptation_n and_o divers_a other_o i_o know_v nothing_o that_o do_v help_v believer_n more_o than_o this_o in_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o law_n in_o that_o sense_n as_o have_v be_v show_v before_o likewise_o from_o hence_o there_o be_v a_o great_a many_o lesson_n to_o be_v learn_v as_o the_o first_o lesson_n first_o from_o this_o deliverance_n we_o be_v teach_v to_o entertain_v the_o hear_n of_o the_o threat_n of_o the_o law_n i_o speak_v to_o believer_n though_o other_o may_v make_v a_o ill_a use_n in_o hear_v the_o deliverance_n from_o the_o law_n yet_o they_o must_v not_o miss_v their_o portion_n i_o say_v believer_n be_v hereby_o teach_v how_o to_o receive_v the_o threat_n of_o the_o law_n you_o hear_v dreadful_a threat_n of_o the_o law_n out_o of_o god_n word_n against_o sin_n now_o how_o shall_v thou_o entertain_v these_o threat_n the_o way_n be_v this_o when_o thou_o hear_v such_o threat_n know_v that_o god_n by_o this_o will_v have_v thou_o to_o consider_v what_o his_o mercy_n be_v in_o deliver_v of_o thou_o from_o what_o thou_o have_v deserve_v god_n will_v have_v thou_o to_o consider_v what_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n be_v in_o itself_o and_o to_o consider_v what_o christ_n have_v do_v god_n will_v have_v thou_o to_o be_v drive_v to_o christ_n by_o this_o mean_n to_o see_v thy_o need_n of_o christ_n to_o bless_v his_o name_n for_o christ_n and_o to_o prize_n christ_n who_o have_v deliver_v thou_o from_o these_o threaten_n a_o believer_n when_o he_o hear_v the_o threat_n of_o the_o law_n be_v like_o a_o man_n that_o stand_v upon_o the_o shore_n when_o there_o be_v a_o grievous_a tempest_n and_o storm_n he_o see_v the_o wave_n rise_v high_a hear_v the_o wind_n blow_v and_o the_o wave_n roar_v but_o he_o stand_v safe_a upon_o the_o haven_n indeed_o he_o be_v in_o the_o storm_n and_o tempest_n but_o god_n have_v bring_v he_o to_o the_o haven_n and_o there_o he_o stand_v and_o bless_v god_n it_o may_v be_v he_o see_v other_o ship_n a_o great_a way_n off_o ready_a to_o be_v split_v upon_o the_o rock_n or_o swallow_v up_o but_o he_o be_v safe_a on_o the_o shore_n so_o it_o shall_v be_v with_o all_o believer_n when_o they_o hear_v the_o threaten_n of_o the_o law_n they_o shall_v entertain_v they_o with_o blessing_n
shall_v say_v then_o what_o need_v we_o regard_v what_o we_o do_v if_o any_o shall_v say_v so_o we_o need_v go_v no_o further_o with_o this_o man_n but_o say_v unto_o he_o thou_o have_v no_o part_n nor_o portion_n in_o this_o thing_n thou_o have_v no_o part_n in_o the_o deliverance_n from_o the_o law_n by_o christ_n shall_v we_o sin_v because_o grace_n abound_v god_n forbid_v the_o lord_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v a_o high_a way_n a_o supernatural_a way_n it_o be_v a_o way_n beyond_o that_o that_o most_o people_n imagine_v most_o people_n upon_o earth_n look_v no_o high_o for_o a_o way_n of_o salvation_n but_o mere_o through_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o they_o will_v certain_o miscarry_v by_o what_o you_o have_v hear_v you_o see_v that_o the_o way_n of_o salvation_n be_v a_o high_a thing_n than_o nature_n the_o four_o lesson_n four_o we_o may_v learn_v from_o hence_o that_o if_o christ_n have_v give_v rest_n to_o believer_n by_o deliver_v they_o from_o the_o rigour_n and_o severity_n of_o the_o law_n that_o now_o they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v cast_v by_o it_o for_o their_o everlasting_a estate_n than_o they_o need_v to_o be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o faithful_a with_o god_n to_o do_v what_o possible_o they_o can_v to_o serve_v the_o lord_n in_o a_o evangelical_a way_n thou_o be_v in_o such_o a_o condition_n that_o thou_o be_v under_o such_o a_o law_n as_o if_o thou_o do_v fail_v in_o any_o one_o point_n thou_o be_v cast_v for_o ever_o but_o now_o thou_o be_v under_o such_o a_o law_n as_o god_n accept_v of_o thou_o in_o christ_n have_v thou_o not_o need_n be_v more_o faithful_a and_o industrious_a in_o thy_o endeavour_n in_o that_o thou_o have_v receive_v so_o much_o mercy_n to_o be_v under_o such_o a_o covenant_n the_o truth_n be_v the_o other_o may_v discourage_v thou_o to_o think_v that_o let_v i_o do_v what_o i_o can_v my_o soul_n be_v cast_v for_o my_o everlasting_a estate_n but_o now_o if_o thou_o be_v bring_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o lord_n christ_n have_v make_v thou_o to_o know_v that_o thy_o rest_n be_v in_o he_o how_o careful_a shall_v thou_o be_v to_o walk_v with_o he_o in_o all_o be_v accept_v poor_a soul_n if_o the_o lord_n shall_v say_v to_o thou_o what_o if_o thou_o shall_v be_v deliver_v from_o this_o law_n and_o be_v bring_v under_o the_o law_n of_o christ_n first_o you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v that_o to_o make_v the_o law_n a_o rule_n of_o our_o faith_n that_o be_v thus_o believer_n think_v that_o because_o their_o faith_n be_v weak_a and_o full_a of_o doubt_n full_a of_o imperfection_n and_o doubt_n therefore_o they_o have_v none_o at_o al._n now_o what_o be_v this_o but_o to_o make_v faith_n itself_o a_o legal_a thing_n for_o indeed_o if_o faith_n be_v legal_a than_o it_o can_v not_o be_v accept_v where_o there_o be_v any_o mixture_n of_o imperfection_n a_o legal_a faith_n can_v never_o be_v accept_v with_o any_o mixture_n of_o doubt_v and_o with_o any_o imperfection_n but_o a_o evangelical_a faith_n can_v be_v accept_v this_o i_o may_v meet_v with_o perhaps_o afterward_o but_o for_o the_o present_a it_o follow_v more_o full_o and_o immediate_o from_o what_o have_v be_v deliver_v from_o our_o rest_n from_o the_o law_n and_o i_o desire_v to_o suggest_v it_o now_o to_o believer_n as_o a_o marvellous_a help_n to_o they_o that_o they_o do_v not_o make_v their_o faith_n legal_a as_o thus_o come_v to_o many_o believer_n that_o be_v full_a of_o doubt_n and_o fear_n and_o why_o do_v they_o not_o believe_v it_o be_v true_a say_v they_o there_o be_v rest_n to_o be_v have_v in_o christ_n and_o much_o to_o be_v have_v in_o this_o i_o but_o this_o be_v to_o believer_n and_o i_o be_o afraid_a i_o be_o not_o a_o believer_n and_o why_o be_v thou_o afraid_a thou_o be_v not_o a_o believer_n because_o of_o such_o and_o such_o sin_n and_o because_o i_o can_v do_v as_o i_o will_v now_o what_o be_v this_o but_o to_o make_v faith_n legal_a now_o faith_n that_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o law_n of_o all_o grace_n that_o must_v be_v evangelical_a our_o mourning_n for_o sin_n be_v to_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o evangelical_a and_o yet_o some_o believer_n look_v upon_o their_o mourning_n for_o sin_n as_o legal_a they_o think_v god_n will_v not_o accept_v of_o their_o mourning_n why_o because_o they_o can_v mourn_v as_o much_o as_o they_o will_v that_o be_v true_a if_o thou_o be_v under_o the_o law_n than_o no_o mourning_n at_o all_o will_v be_v accept_v as_o under_o the_o law_n but_o now_o thou_o must_v look_v upon_o it_o as_o evangelical_a and_o thy_o obedience_n as_o evangelical_a it_o be_v a_o ill_a thing_n that_o believer_n look_v upon_o their_o mourning_n for_o sin_n and_o obedience_n and_o the_o like_a as_o under_o the_o law_n and_o not_o as_o evangelical_a this_o be_v a_o great_a hindrance_n to_o they_o but_o now_o much_o more_o be_v it_o to_o
look_v upon_o their_o faith_n as_o legal_a as_o thus_o because_o their_o faith_n do_v not_o come_v up_o so_o full_o to_o the_o perfection_n that_o they_o do_v desire_n yea_o to_o that_o perfection_n that_o the_o law_n require_v in_o any_o thing_n that_o we_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n for_o though_o the_o law_n do_v not_o mention_v any_o thing_n of_o our_o believe_a in_o christ_n yet_o thus_o much_o the_o law_n require_v that_o what_o we_o do_v shall_v be_v tender_v up_o to_o god_n and_o what_o we_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n with_o perfection_n now_o believer_n look_v upon_o what_o they_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n as_o imperfect_a this_o make_v they_o to_o make_v their_o faith_n legal_a the_o six_o lesson_n six_o another_o lesson_n that_o believer_n be_v to_o learn_v from_o the_o rest_n that_o they_o have_v in_o christ_n from_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n be_v this_o that_o if_o they_o find_v any_o way_n or_o mean_n to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o terror_n that_o come_v by_o the_o law_n certain_o than_o they_o need_v not_o be_v trouble_v with_o all_o the_o terror_n that_o possible_o can_v come_v from_o any_o creature_n from_o any_o man_n if_o thy_o faith_n can_v deliver_v thou_o from_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n and_o give_v rest_n to_o thy_o soul_n notwithstanding_o all_o the_o terrible_a thing_n in_o the_o law_n threaten_v against_o thy_o sin_n than_o thy_o faith_n may_v deliver_v thou_o much_o more_o from_o the_o terror_n of_o man_n for_o take_v all_o the_o rage_n and_o power_n of_o all_o the_o man_n in_o the_o world_n and_o devil_n in_o hell_n they_o be_v not_o so_o terrible_a as_o the_o threat_n of_o the_o law_n now_o if_o god_n have_v give_v thou_o such_o a_o grace_n into_o thy_o heart_n as_o thou_o by_o that_o come_v to_o know_v a_o way_n to_o deliver_v thou_o from_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o threaten_n of_o the_o law_n and_o to_o give_v rest_n unto_o thy_o soul_n from_o that_o than_o thou_o need_v not_o be_v afraid_a of_o all_o terror_n from_o wicked_a man_n do_v but_o set_v that_o grace_n of_o thy_o a_o work_n set_v it_o in_o exercise_n upon_o such_o promise_n as_o have_v give_v thou_o rest_n from_o the_o law_n and_o this_o will_v free_v thou_o from_o the_o terror_n of_o wicked_a man_n in_o the_o world_n true_o if_o believer_n do_v understand_v the_o reality_n of_o this_o point_n there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o world_n can_v thy_o faith_n when_o thou_o hear_v the_o terror_n of_o wicked_a man_n to_o deliver_v thy_o soul_n from_o they_o let_v there_o be_v never_o so_o much_o rumour_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o thou_o may_v text_n learn_v of_o i_o for_o i_o be_o meek_a and_o lowly_a in_o heart_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n unto_o your_o soul_n i_o will_v give_v rest_n to_o your_o soul_n that_o so_o you_o may_v be_v of_o a_o meek_a and_o quiet_a disposition_n towards_o your_o brethren_n but_o of_o that_o when_o we_o come_v to_o those_o word_n that_o follow_v we_o shall_v then_o speak_v of_o the_o weakness_n and_o quietness_n of_o spirit_n that_o shall_v be_v in_o christian_n now_o these_o thing_n be_v necessary_o the_o consequence_n that_o do_v follow_v upon_o the_o rest_n that_o we_o have_v in_o christ_n regard_n of_o legal_a performance_n that_o you_o know_v i_o open_v at_o large_a the_o great_a burden_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o spirit_n of_o many_o people_n who_o have_v convince_v conscience_n and_o there_o conscience_n pull_v and_o hale_v they_o to_o duty_n and_o they_o dare_v not_o but_o perform_v duty_n but_o when_o they_o do_v their_o duty_n their_o very_a duty_n be_v a_o burden_n to_o they_o for_o they_o do_v they_o in_o a_o legal_a way_n there_o be_v many_o i_o know_v that_o be_v acquaint_v with_o this_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o speak_v of_o such_o a_o subject_n but_o that_o there_o be_v divers_a that_o know_v what_o i_o mean_v though_o other_o know_v not_o to_o be_v under_o so_o much_o power_n of_o conscience_n as_o not_o to_o dare_v to_o omit_v a_o duty_n though_o the_o duty_n be_v burdensome_a to_o they_o there_o be_v many_o that_o be_v not_o under_o so_o much_o command_v of_o conscience_n but_o though_o conscience_n require_v they_o to_o do_v such_o a_o duty_n they_o dare_v omit_v the_o duty_n and_o they_o be_v not_o trouble_v at_o it_o but_o but_o there_o be_v other_o who_o have_v not_o feel_v the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o set_v their_o soul_n at_o liberty_n they_o be_v under_o so_o much_o command_v of_o conscience_n that_o they_o dare_v not_o but_o do_v what_o conscience_n require_v and_o yet_o the_o lord_n know_v the_o duty_n that_o nothing_o trouble_v the_o heart_n of_o a_o strong_a believer_n but_o only_o the_o want_n of_o his_o sanctification_n nothing_o in_o the_o world_n i_o say_v trouble_v the_o heart_n of_o a_o strong_a that_o many_o time_n they_o be_v troublesome_a to_o he_o but_o a_o strong_a believer_n get_v over_o that_o burden_n but_o now_o the_o remain_a corruption_n that_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n none_o in_o this_o world_n get_v over_o this_o indeed_o in_o great_a part_n the_o strong_a believer_n have_v get_v power_n there_o also_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o than_o the_o weak_a one_o have_v do_v but_o the_o chief_a burden_n that_o lie_v upon_o a_o strong_a believer_n in_o this_o world_n be_v the_o remainder_n of_o corruption_n that_o be_v yet_o in_o he_o and_o so_o for_o the_o next_o burden_n of_o affliction_n the_o strong_a believer_n get_v well_o over_o that_o too_o but_o this_o be_v one_o chief_a burden_n of_o the_o strong_a believer_n that_o the_o world_n have_v that_o yet_o there_o be_v much_o remain_a corruption_n in_o they_o as_o it_o be_v in_o paul_n though_o a_o strong_a believer_n say_v he_o oh_o wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n tell_v man_n of_o the_o dangerousness_n of_o their_o way_n that_o it_o will_v never_o be_v peace_n in_o the_o end_n that_o they_o will_v rue_v it_o at_o the_o last_o and_o their_o conscience_n give_v they_o many_o a_o secret_a nip_n yet_o they_o go_v on_o still_o notwithstanding_o the_o terror_n in_o the_o law_n many_o time_n nay_o notwithstanding_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n have_v be_v strong_a upon_o they_o and_o they_o have_v cry_v out_o against_o their_o sin_n and_o promise_v against_o they_o and_o notwithstanding_o that_o they_o find_v that_o their_o sin_n do_v destroy_v the_o very_a
