resurrection of the dead 22 For as in Adam all die even so in Christ shall all be made alive 23 But * 1 Thess 4.15 every man in his own order Christ the first-fruits afterward they that are Christs at his coming 24 Then cometh the end when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God even the Father when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power 25 For he must reign * Psal 110.1 till he hath put all enemies under his feet 26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death 27 For he * Psal 8.6 hath put all things under his feet But when he saith all things are put under him it is manifest that he is excepted which did put all things under him 28 And when all things shall be subdued unto him then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him that God may be all in all 29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead if the dead rise not at all why are they then baptized for the dead 30 And why stand we in jeopardy every hour 31 I protest by ‖ Some read our your rejoycing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord I die daily 32 If ‖ Or to speak after the manner of men after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus what advantageth it me if the dead rise not * Isa 22.23 let us eat and drink for tomorrow we die 33 Be not deceived evil communications corrupt good manners 34 Awake to righteousness and sin not for some have not the knowledge of God I speak this to your shame 35 But some man will say How are the dead raised up and with what body do they come 36 Thou fool that which thou sowest is not quickned exceptit die 37 And that which thou sowest thou sowest not that body that shall be but bare grain it may chance of wheat or of some other grain 38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him and to every seed his own body 39 All flesh is not the same flesh but there is one kinde of flesh of men another flesh of beasts another of fishes and another of birds 40 There are also celestial bodies and bodies terrestrial but the glory of the celestial is one and the glory of the terrestrial is another 41 There is one glory of the sun and another glory of the moon and another glory of the stars for one star differeth from another star in glory 42 So also is the resurrection of the dead It is sown in corruption it is raised in incorruption 43 It is sown in dishonour it is raised in glory it is sown in weakness it is raised in power 44 It is sown a natural body it is raised a spiritual body There is a natural body and there is a spiritual body 45 And so it is written The first man Adam * Gen. 1.7 was made a living soul the last Adam was made a quickning spirit 46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual but that which is natural and afterward that which is spiritual 47 The first man is of the earth earthy the second man is the Lord from heaven 48 As is the earthy such are they also that are earthy and as is the heavenly such are they also that are heavenly 49 And as we have born the image of the earthy we shall also bear the image of the heavenly 50 Now this I say brethren that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God neither doth corruption inherit incorruption 51 Behold I shew you a mystery We shall not all sleep but we shall all be changed 52 In a moment in the twinkling of an eye at the last * Matth. 24.31 1 Thess 4.16 trump for the trumpet shall sound and the dead shall be raised incorruptible and we shall be changed 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption and this mortal must put on immortality 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption and this mortal shall have put on immortality then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written * Isa 25.8 Hos 13.14 Death is swallowed up in victory 55 O death where is thy sting O ‖ Or hell grave where is thy victory 56 The sting of death is sin and the strength of sin is the law 57 But thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ 58 Therefore my beloved brethren be ye stedfast unmoveable always abounding in the work of the Lord forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. CHAP. XVI 1 He exhorteth them to relieve the want of the brethren at Jerusalem 10 commendeth Timothy 13 and after friendly admonitions 16 shutteth up his epistle with divers salutations NOw concerning the collection for the saints as I have given order to the churches of Galatia even so do ye 2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store as God hath prospered him that there be no gatherings when I come 3 And when I come whomsoever you shall approve by your letters them will I send to bring your †Gr. â—ife liberality unto Jerusalem 4 And if it be meet that I go also they shall go with me 5 Now I will come unto you when I shall pass through Macedonia for I do pass through Macedonia 6 And it may be that I will abide yea and winter with you that ye may bring me on my journey whithersoever I go 7 For I will not see you now by the way but I trust to tarry a while with you if the Lord permit 8 But I will tarry at Ephesus until Pentecost 9 For a great door and effectual is opened unto me and there are many adversaries 10 Now if Timotheus come see that he may be with you without fear for he worketh the work of the Lord as I also do 11 Let no man therefore despise him but conduct him forth in peace that he may come unto me for I look for him with the brethren 12 As touching our brother Apollos I greatly desired him to come unto you with the brethren but his will was not at all to come at this time but he will come when he shall have convenient time 13 Watch ye stand fast in the faith quit you like men be strong 14 Let all your things be done with charity 15 I beseech you brethren ye know the house of Stephanas that it is the first-fruits of Achaia and that they have addicted themselves to the ministery of the saints 16 That ye submit your selves unto such and to every one that helpeth with us and laboureth 17 I am glad of the coming of Stephanas and Fortunatus and Achaicus for that which was lacking on your part they have supplied 18 For they have refreshed my spirit and yours therefore acknowledge ye
fathers graves 40 Now under the coats of every one that was slain they found things consecrated to the idols of the Jamnites which is forbidden the Jews by * Deut. â—7 7 the law Then every man saw that this was the cause wherefore they were slain 41 All men therefore praising the Lord the righteous Judge who had opened the things that were hid 42 Betook themselves unto prayer and besought him that the sin committed might wholly be put out of remembrance Besides that noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin forsomuch as they saw before their eyes the things that came to pass for the sins of those that were slain 43 And when he had made a gathering throughout the company to the sum of two thousand drachnies of silver he sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering doing therein very well and honestly in that he was mindful of the resurrection 44 For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should have risen again it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead 45 And also in that he perceived that there was great favour said up for those that died godly It was an holy and good thought Whereupon he made a reconciliation for the dead that they might be delivered from sin CHAP. XIII 1 Eupator invadeth Judea 15 Judas by night slayeth many 18 Eupators purpose is defeated 23 He maketh peace with Judas IN the hundred fourty and ninth year it was told Judas that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a great power into Judea 2 And with him Lysias his protectour and ruler of his affairs having either of them a Grecian power of footmen an hundred ten thousand and hors-men five thousand and three hundred and elephants two and twenty and three hundred chariots armed with hooks 3 Menelaus also joyned himself with them and with great dissimulation encouraged Antiochus not for the safeguard of the countrey but because he thought to have been made governour 4 But the King of kings moved Antiochus minde against this wicked wretch and Lysias informed the king that this man was the cause of all mischief so that the king commanded to bring him unto Berea and to put him to death as the manner is in that place 5 Now there was in that place a towre of fifty cubits high full of ashes and it had a round instrument which on every side hanged down into the ashes 6 And whosoever was condemned of sacriledge or had committed any other grievous crime there did all men thrust him unto death 7 Such a death it hapned that wicked man to die not having so much as burial in the earth and that most justly 8 For insomuch as he had committed many sins about the altar whose fire and ashes were holy he received his death in ashes 9 Now the king came with a barbarous and haughty minde to do far worse to the Jews then had been done in his fathers time 10 Which things when Judas perceived he commanded the multitude to call upon the Lord night and day that if ever at any other time he would now also help them being at the point to be put from their law from their countrey and from the holy temple 11 And that he would not suffer the people that ‖ Or bad bad a little respite had even now been but a little refreshed to be in subjection to the blasphemous nations 12 So when they had all done this together and besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting and lying flat upon the groud three days long Judas having exhorted them commanded they should be in a readiness 13 And Judas being apart with the elders determined before the kings host should enter into Judea and get the city to go forth and try the matter in fight by the help of the Lord. 14 So when he had committed all to the ‖ Or Lord. Creatour of the world and exhorted his souldiers to fight manfully even unto death for the laws the temple the city the countrey the common-wealth he camped by Modin 15 And having given the watch-word to them that were about him Victory is of God with the most valiant choice young men he went in into the kings tent by night slew in the camp about four thousand men and the chiefest of the elephants with all that were upon him 16 And at last they filled the camp with sear and tumult and departed with good success 17 This was done in the break of the day because the protection of the Lord did help him 18 Now when the king had taken a taste of the manliness of the Jews he went about to take the holds by policy 19 And marched towards Bethsura which was a strong hold of the Jews but he was put to flight failed and lost of his men 20 For Judas had conveyed unto them that were in it such things as were necessary 21 But Rhodochus who was in the Jews host disclosed the secrets to the enemies therefore he was sought out and when they had gotten him they put him in prison 22 The king treated with them in Bethsura the second time gave his hand took theirs departed sought with Judas was over come 23 Heard that Philip who was leâ—t over the affairs in Antioch ‖ Or rebelled was desperately bent confounded intreated the Jews submitted himself and sware to all equal conditions agreed with them and offered sacrifice honoured the temple and dealt kindly with the place 24 And accepted well of Maccabeus made him principal governour from Ptolemais unto the Gerrhenians 25 Came to Ptolemais the people there were grieved for the covenants for they stormed because they would make their covenants void 26 Lysias went up to the judgment-seat said as much as could be in defence of the cause perswaded pacified made them well affected returned to Antioch Thus it went touching the kings coming departing CHAP. XIV 6 Aleimus accuseth Judas 18 Nicanor maketh peace with Judas 39 He seeketh to take Bazis 46 who to escape his bands killeth himself AFter three years was Judas informed that Demetrius the son of Seleucus having entred by the haven of Tripolis with a great power and navy 2 Had taken the countrey and killed Antiochus and Lysias his protectour 3 Now one Alcimus who had been high priest and had defiled himself wilfully in the times of their mingling with the Gentiles seeing that by no means he could save himself nor have any more access to the holy altar 4 Came to king Demetrius in the hundred and one and fiftieth year presenting unto him a crown of gold and a palm and also of the boughs which were ‖ Or thought to be of the temple used solemnly in the temple so that day he held his peace 5 Howbeit having gotten opportunity to further his foolish enterprise and being called into counsel by Demetrius and asked how the Jews stood affected and what they intended he answered thereunto

XI 1 Rehoboam raising an army to subdue Israel is forbidden by Shemaiah 5 He strengthneth his kingdom with forts and provision 13 The priests and Levites and such as feared God forsaken by Jeroboam strengthen the kingdom of Judah 18 The wives and children of Rehoboam ANd * 1 King 12.21 c. when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem he gathered of the house of Judah and Benjamin an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men which were warriours to fight against Israel that he might bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam 2 But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God saying 3 Speak unto Rehoboam the son of Solomon king of Judah and to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin saying 4 Thus saith the LORD Ye shall not go up nor fight against your brethren return every man to his house for this thing is done of me And they obeyed the words of the LORD and returned from going against Jeroboam 5 ¶ And Rehoboam dwelt in Jerusalem and built cities for defence in Judah 6 He built even Beth-lehem and Etam and Tekoa 7 And Beth-zur and Shoco and Adullam 8 And Gath and Mareshah and Ziph 9 And Adoraim and Lachish and Azekah 10 And Zorah and Aijalon and Hebron which are in Judah and in Benjamin fenced cities 11 And he fortified the strong holds and put captains in them and store of victual and of oyl and wine 12 And in every several city be put shields and spears and made them exceeding strong having Judah and Benjamin on his side 13 ¶ And the priests and the Levites that were in all Israel †Heb. presented themselves to him resorted to him out of all their coasts 14 For the Levites left their suburbs and their possession came to Judah and Jerusalem for * Chap. 13.9 Jeroboam and his sons had cast them off from executing the priests office unto the LORD 15 And he ordained him priests for the high places and for the devils and for the calves which he had made 16 And after them out of all the tribes of Israel such as set their hearts to seek the LORD God of Israel came to Jerusalem to sacrifice unto the LORD God of their fathers 17 So they strengthned the kingdom of Judah and made Rehoboam the son of Solomon strong three years for three years they walked in the way of David and Solomon 18 ¶ And Rehoboam took him Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David to wife and Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse 19 Which bare him children Jeush and Shamariah and Zaham 20 And after her he took * 1 King 15.2 Maachah the daughter of Absalom which bare him Abijah and Attai and Ziza and Shelomith 21 And Rehoboam loved Maachah the daughter of Absalom above all his wives and his concubines for he took eighteen wives and threescore concubines and begat twenty and eight sons and threescore daughters 22 And Rehoboam made Abijah the son of Maachah the chief to be ruler among his brethren for he thought to make him king 23 And he dealt wisely and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countreys of Judah and Benjamin unto every fenced city and he gave them victual in abundance and he desired †Heb. a multitude of wives many wives CHAP. XII 1 Rehoboam forsaking the Lord is punished by Shishak 5 He and the princes repenting at the preaching of Shemaiah are delivered from destruction but not from spoil 13 The reign and death of Rehoboam ANd it came to pass when Rehoboam had established the kingdom and had strengthned himself he forsook the law of the LORD and all Israel with him 2 And it came to pass that in the fifth year of king Rehoboam Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem * 1 Kin. 14.14 21. because they had transgressed against the LORD 3 With twelve hundred chariots and threescore thousand hors-men and the people were without number that came with him out of Egypt the Lubims the Sukkiims and the Ethiopians 4 And he took the fenced cities which pertained to Judah and came to Jerusalem 5 ¶ Then came Shemaiah the prophet to Rehoboam and to the princes of Judah that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak and said unto them Thus saith the LORD Ye have forsaken me and therefore have I also left you in the hand of Shishak 6

thereof and all the house of Jacob was covered with confusion 29 And after two years fully expired the king sent his chief collectour of tribute unto the cities of Juda who came unto Jerusalem with a great multitude 30 And spake peaceable words unto them but all was deceit for when they had given him credence he fell suddenly upon the city and smote it very sore and destroyed much people of Israel 31 And when he had taken the spoils of the city he set it on fire and pulled down the houses and walls thereof on every side 32 But the women and children took they captive and possessed the cattel 33 Then builded they the city of David with a great and strong wall and with mighty towres and made it a strong hold for them 34 And they put therein a sinful nation wicked men and fortified themselves therein 35 They stored it also with armour and victuals and when they had gathered together the spoils of Jerusalem they laid them up there and so they became a sore snare 36 For it was a place to lie in wait against the sanctuary and an evil adversary to Israel 37 Thus they shed innocent bloud on every side of the sanctuary and defiled it 38 Insomuch that the inhabitants of Jerusalem fled because of them whereupon the city was made an habitation of strangers and became strange to those that were born in her and her own children left her 39 Her sanctuary was laid waste like a wilderness her feasts were turned into mourning her sabbaths into reproach her honour into contempt 40 As had been her glory so was her dishonour increased and her excellency was turned into mourning 41 Moreover king Antiochus wrote to his whole kingdom that all should be one people 42 And every one should leave his laws so all the heathen agreed according to the commandment of the king 43 Yea many also of the Israelites consented to his religion and sacrificed unto idols and profaned the sabbath 44 For the king had sent letters by messengers unto Jerusalem and the cities of Juda that they should follow ‖ Or the laws and rites of the strangers of the land the strange laws of the land 45 And forbid burnt-offerings and sacrifice and drink-offerings in the temple and that they should profane the sabbaths and festival days 46 And pollute the sanctuary and holy people 47 Set up altars and groves and chappels of idols and sacrifice swines flesh and unclean beasts 48 That they should also leave their children uncircumcised and make their souls abominable with all manner of uncleanness and profanation 49 To the end they might forget the law and change all the ordinances 50 And whosoever would not do according to the commandment of the king he said he should die 51 In the self-same manner wrote he to his whole kingdom and appointed overseers over all the people commanding the cities of Juda to sacrifice city by city 52 Then many of the people were gathered unto them to wit every one that forsook the law and so they committed evils in the land 53 ‖ Or And they made Israel hide themselves in holes in every place of succour And drove the Israelites into secret places even wheresoever they could flee for succour 54 Now the fifteenth day of the moneth Casleu in the hundred fourty and fifth year they set up the abomination of desolation upon the altar and builded idol-altars throughout the cities of Juda on every side 55 And burnt incense at the doors of their houses and in the streets 56 And when they had rent in pieces the books of the law which they found they burnt them with fire 57 And wheresoever was found with any the book of the testament or if any consented to the law †Gr. the kings commandment put him to death the kings commandment was that they should put him to death 58 Thus did they by their authority unto the Israelites every moneth to as many as were found in the cities 59 Now the five and twentieth day of the moneth they did sacrifice upon the idol-altar which was upon the altar of God 60 At which time according to the commandment they put to death certain women †Gr. that had circumcised their children that had caused their children to be circumcised 61 And they hanged the infants about their necks and rifled their houses and slew them that had circumcised them 62 Howbeit many in Israel were fully resolved and confirmed in themselves not to eat any unclean thing 63 Wherefore they chose rather to die that they might not be defiled with meats and that they might not profane the holy covenant so then they died 64 And there was very great wrath upon Israel CHAP. II. 6 Mattathias lamenteth the case of Jerusalem 24 He slayeth a Jew that did sacrifice to idols in his presence and the kings messenger also 34 He and his are assailed on the sabbath and make no resistance 50 He dieth and instrutieth his sons 66 and maketh their brother Judas Maccabeus general IN those days ‖ Or Mattathias the son of John c. arose from Jerusalem or out of Jerusalem arose Mattathias the son of John the son of Simeon a priest of the sons of Joarib from Jerusalem and dwelt in Modin 2 And he had five sons Joannan ‖ Or who was called and so aflterward in the rest called ‖ Gaddis Caddis 3 Simon called Thassi 4 Judas who was called Maccabeus 5 Eleazar called ‖ Or Avaron or Abaron Avaran and Jonathan whose surname was Apphus 6 And when he saw the blasphemies that were committed in Juda and Jerusalem 7 He said Wo is me wherefore was I born to see this misery of my people and of the holy city and to dwell there when it was delivered into the hand of the enemy and the sanctuary into the hand of strangers 8 Her temple is become as a man without glory 9 Her glorious vessels are carried away into captivity her infants are slain in the streets her young men with the sword of the enemy 10 What nation
and with profane hands pulling down the things that were dedicated by other kings to the augmentation and glory and honour of the place he gave them away 17 And so haughty was Antiochus in minde that he considered not that the Lord was angry for a while for the sins of them that dwelt in the city and therefore his eye was not upon the place 18 For had they not been formerly wrapped in many sins this man assoon as he had come had forthwith been scourged and put back from his presumption as Heliodorus was whom Seleucus the king sent to view the treasury 19 Nevertheless God did not choose the people for the places sake but the place for the peoples sake 20 And therefore the place it self that was partaker with them of the adversity that hapned to the nation did afterward communicate in the benefits sent from the Lord and as it was forsaken in the wrath of the Almighty so again the great Lord being reconciled it was set up with all glory 21 So when Antiochus had carried out of the temple a thousand and eight hundred talents he departed in all haste unto Antiochia weening in his pride to make the land navigable and the sea passable by foot such was the haughtiness of his minde 22 And he left governours to vâ—x the nation at Jerusalem Philip for his countrey a Phrygian and for manners more barbarous then he that set him there 23 And at Garizim Andronicus and besides Menelaus who worse then all the rest bare an heavy hand over the citizens having a malicious minde against his countreymen the Jews 24 He sent also that detestable ring-leader Apollonius with an army of two twenty thousand commanding him to slay all those that were in their best age and to sell the women and the younger sort 25 Who coming to Jerusalem and pretending pâ—â—â—â— dâ—â—â—orbear till the holy-day of the sabbath when taking the Jews keeping holy-day he commanded his men to arm themselves 26 And so he slew all them that were gone to the celebrating of the sabbath and running through the city with weapons â—lâ—w great multitudes 27 But Judas Maccabeus †Gr who was the tenth with nine others or thereabout withdrew himself into the wilderness and lived in the mountains after the manner of beasts with his company who fed on herbs continually lest they should be partakers of the pollution CHAP. VI. 1 The Jews are compelled to leave the law of God 4 The temple is defiled 8 Cruelty upon the people and the nomâ— 12 〈◊〉 exhorâ—â— ion 〈◊〉 bear affliction by the example of the valiaâ—â—â—ouâ—aâ—e of E. 〈◊〉 cruelly tâ—rtured NOt long after this the king sent an old man of ‖ Antioâ—b the Laune interpreters Athens to compel the Jews to depart from the laws of their fathers and not to live after the laws of God 2 And to pollute also the temple in Jerusalem and to call it the temple of Jupiter Olympius and that in Garizun of Jupiter the defender of strangers ‖ Out of Joseph 1.12 cap. 7. or as they werâ— as they did desire that dwelt in the place 3 The coming in of this mischief was sore and grievous to the people 4 For the temple was filled with not and revelling by the Gentiles who dallied with harlots and had to do with women within the circuit of the holy places and besides that brought in things that were not lawful 5 The altar also was filled with profane things which the law forbiddeth 6 Neither was it lawful for a man to keep sabbath-days or ancient feasts or to profess himself at all to be a Jew 7 And in the day of the kings birth every moneth they were brought by bitter constraint to eat of the sacrifices and when the feast of Bacchus was kept the Jews were compelled to go in procession to Bacchus carrying ivie 8 Moreover there went out a decree to the neighbour cities of the †Gr Grecians heathen by the suggestion of Ptolemee against the Jews that they should observe the same fashions be partakers of their sacrifices 9 And whoso would not conform themselves to the manners of the Gentiles should be put to death Then might a man have seen the present misery 10 For there were two women brought who had circumcised their children whom when they had openly led round about the city the babes hanging at their breasts they cast them down headlong from the wall 11 And others that had run together into caves near by to keep the sabbath-day secretly being discovered to Philip were all burnt together because they made a conscience to help themselves for the honour of the most sacred day 12 Now I beseech those that read this book that they be not discouraged for these calamities but that they judge those punishments not to be for destruction but for a chastning of our nation 13 For it is a token of his great goodness when wicked doers are not suffered any long time but forthwith punished 14 For not as with other nations whom the Lord patiently forbeareth to punish till they be come to the fulness of their sins so dealeth he with us 15 Lest that being come to the height of sin afterwards he should take vengeance of us 16 And therefore he never withdraweth his mercy from us And though he punish with adversity yet doth he never forsake his people 17 But let this that we have spoken be for a warning unto us And now will we come to the declaring of the matter in few words 18 Eleazar one of the principal scribes an aged man and of a well-savoured countenance was constrained to open his mouth and to eat swines flesh 19 But he choosing rather to die gloriously then to live stained with such an abomination spirit it forth and came of his own accord to the torment 20 As it behoved them to come that are resolute to stand out against such things as are not lawful for love of life to be tasted 21 But they that had the charge of that wicked feast for the old acquaintance they had with the man taking him aside besought him to bring flesh of his own provision such as was lawful for him to use and make as if he did eat of the flesh taken from the sacrifice commanded by the king 22 That in so doing he might he delivered from death and for the old friendship with them finde favour 23 But he began to consider discreetly and as became his age and the excellency of his ancient years and the honour of his gray head whereunto he was come and his most honest education from a childe or rather the holy law made and given by God therefore he answered accordingly and willed them straightways to send him to the grave 24 For it becometh not our age said he in any wise to dissemble whereby many young persons might think that Eleazar being fourscore years old and ten were now gone to a strange religion 25
And so they through mine hypocrisie and desire to live a little time and a moment longer should be deceived by me and I get a slain to mine old age and make it abominable 26 For though for the present time I should be delivered from the punishment of men yet should I not escape the hand of the Almighty neither alive nor dead 27 Wherefore now manfully changing this life I will shew my self such an one as mine age requireth 28 And leave a notable example to such as be young to die willingly and couragiously for the honourable and holy laws and when he had said these words immediately he went to the torment 29 They that led him changing the good will they bare him a little before into hatred because the foresaid speeches proceeded as they thought from ‖ Or madness or â—ridâ— a desparate minde 30 But when he was ready to die with stripes he groaned and said It is manifest unto the Lord that hath the holy knowledge that whereas I might have been delivered from death I now endure sore pains in body by being beaten but in soul am well content to suffer these things because I fear him 31 And thus this man died leaving his death for an example of a noble courage and a memorial of vertue not onely unto young men but unto all his nation CHAP. VII The constancy and cruel death of seven brethren and their mother in one day because they would not eat swines flesh at the kings commandment IT came to pass also that seven brethren with their mother were taken and compelled by the king against the law to taste swines flesh and were tormented with scourges and whips 2 But one of them that spake first said thus What wouldest thou ask or learn of us we are ready to die rather then to transgress the laws of our fathers 3 Then the king being in a rage commanded pans and caldrons to be made but. 4 Which forthwith being heared he commanded to cut out the tongue of him that spake first and to cut off the utmost parts of his body the rest of his brethren and his mother looking on 5 Now when he was thus maimed in all his members he commanded him being yet alive to be brought to the fire and to be fried in the pan and as the vapour of the pan was for a good space dispersed they exhorted one another with the mother to die manfully saying thus 6 The Lord God looketh upon us and in truth hath comfort in us as * Deu. 32.36 Moses in his song which witnessed to their faces declared saying And he shall be comforted in his servants 7 So when the first was dead after this manner they brought the second to make him a mocking-stock and when they had Pulled off the skin of his head with the hair they asked him Wilt thou eat before thou be punished throughout every member of thy body 8 But he answered in his own language and said No. Wherefore he also received the next torment in order as the former did 9 And when he was at the last gasp he said Thou like a fury takest us out of this present life but the King of the world shall raise us up who have died for his laws unto everlasting life 10 After him was the third made a mocking-stock and when he was required he put out his tongue and that right soon holding forth his hands manfully 11 And said couragiously These I had from heaven and for his laws I despise them and from him I hope to receive them again 12 Insomuch that the king and they that were with him marvelled at the young mans courage for that he nothing regarded the pains 13 Now when this man was dead also they tormented and mangled the fourth in like manner 14 So when he was ready to die he said thus It is good being put to death by men to look for hope from God to be raised up again by him as for thee thou shalt have no resurrection to life 15 Afterward they brought the fifth also and mangled him 16 Then looked he unto the king and said Thou hast power over men thou art corruptible thou doest what thou wilt yet think not that our nation is forsaken of God 17 But abide a while and behold his great power how he will torment thee and thy seed 18 After him also they brought the sixth who being ready to die said Be not deceived without cause for we suffer these things for our selves having sinned against our God therefore marvellous things are done unto us 19 But think not thou that takest in hand to strive against God that thou shalt escape unpunished 20 But the mother was marvellous above all and worthy of honourable memory for when she saw her seven sons slain within the space of one day she bare it with a good courage because of the hope that she had in the Lord. 21 Yea she exhorted every one of them in her own language filled with couragious spirits and stirring up her womanish thoughts with a manly stomach she said unto them 22 I cannot tell how you came into my womb for I neither gave you breath nor life neither was it I that formed the members of every one of you 23 But doubtless the Creatour of the world who formed the generation of man and found out the beginning of all things will also of his own mercy give you breath and life again as you now regard not your own selves for his laws sake 24 Now Antiochus thinking himself despised and suspecting it to be a reproachful speech whilest the youngest was yet alive did not onely exhort him by words but also assured him with oaths that he would make him both a rich and a happy man if he would turn from the laws of his fathers and that also he would take him for his friend and trust him with affairs 25 But when the young man would in no case hearken unto him the king called his mother and exhorted her that she would counsel the young man to save his life 26 And when he had exhorted her with many words she promised him that she would counsel her son 27 But she bowing her self towards him laughing the cruel tyrant to scorn spake in her countrey language on this manner O my son have pity upon me that bare thee nine moneths in my womb and gave thee such three years and nourished thee and brought thee up unto this age and endured the troubles of education 28 I beseech thee my son look upon the heaven and the earth and all that is therein and consider that God made them of things that were not and so was mankinde made likewise 29 Fear not this tormentour but being worthy of thy brethren take thy death that I may receive thee again in mercy with thy brethren 30 Whiles she was yet speaking these words the young man said Whom wait ye for I will not obey the kings

from Cesar Augustus that all the world should be ‖ Or â—â—elled taxed 2 And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governour of Syria 3 And all went to be taxed every one into his own city 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth into Judea unto * Joh. 7.42 the city of David which is called Bethlehem because he was of the house and linage of David 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife being great with childe 6 And so it was that while they were there the days were accomplished that she should be delivered 7 And she brought forth her first-born son and wrapped before the face of all people 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles and the glory of thy people Israel 33 And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him 34 And Simeon had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity 37 And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years which departed not from the temple but served God with fastings and prayers night and day 38 And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in ‖ Or Israâ—â— Jerusalem 39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord they returned into Galilee to their own city Nazareth 40 And the childe grew and waxed strong in spirit filled with wisdom and the grace of God was upon him 41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem * Deâ— 16.1 every year at the feast of the pass-over 42 And when he was twelve year old they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast 43 And when they had fulfilled the days as they returned the childe Jesus tarried behinde in Jerusalem and Joseph and his mother knew not of it 44 But they supposing him to have been in the company went a days journey and they sought him among their kinsfolk and among their acquaintance 45 And when they found him not they turned back again to Jerusalem seeking him 46 And it came to pass that after three days they found him in the temple sitting in the midst of the doctours both hearing them and asking them questions 47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers 48 And when they saw him they were amazed and his mother said vnto him Son why hast thou thus dealt with us behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing 49 And he said unto them How is it that ye sought me wist ye not that I must be about my Fathers business 50 And they
priest that same year said unto them Ye know nothing at all 50 * Chap. 18.14 Nor consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people and that the whole nation perish not 51 And this spake he not of himself but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation 52 And not for that nation onely but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad 53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death 54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews but went thence unto a countrey near to the wilderness into a city called Ephraim and there continued with his disciples 55 ¶ And the Jews pass-over was nigh at hand and many went out of the countrey up to Jerusalem before the pass-over to purifie themselves 56 Then sought they for Jesus and spake among themselves as they stood in the temple What think ye that he will not come to the feast 57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment that if any man knew where he were he should shew it that they might take him CHAP. XII 1 Jesus excuseth Mary anointing his feet 9 The people flock to see Lazarus 10 The hiâ—h priests consult to kill him 12 Christ rideth into Jerusalem 20 Greeks desire to see Jesus 23 He foretelleth his death 37 The Jews are generally blinded 42 yet many chief rulers beleeve but do not consess him 44 therefore Jesus calleth earnestly for confession of faith THen Jesus six days before the pass-over came to Bethany where Lazarus was which had been dead whom he raised from the dead 2 There they made him a supper and Martha served but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him 3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard very costly and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feâ—t with her hair and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment 4 Then saith one of his disciples Judas Iscariot Simons son which should betray him 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence and given to the poor 6 This he said not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief and * Chap. 13.29 had the bag and bare what was put therein 7 Then said Jesus Let her alone against the day of my burying hath she kept this 8 For the poor always ye have with you but me ye have not always 9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there and they came not for Jesus sake onely but that they might see Lazarus also whom he had raised from the dead 10 ¶ But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death 11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away and beleeved on Jesus 12 ¶ * Mat. 21.8 On the next day much people that were come to the feast when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem 13 Took branches of palm-trees and went forth to meet him and cried Hosanna blessed is the king of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. 14 And Jesus when he had found a young ass sat thereon as it is written 15 * Zech. 9.9 Fear not daughter of Sion behold thy King cometh sitting on an asses colt 16 These things understood not his disciples at the first but when Jesus was glorified then remembred they that these things were written of him and that they had done these things unto him 17 The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave and raised him from the dead bare record 18 For this cause the people also met him for that they heard that he had done this miracle 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing behold the world is gone after him 20 ¶ And there were certain Greeks among them that came up to worship at the feast 21 The same came therefore to Philip which was of Bethsaida of Galilee and desired him saying Sir we would see Jesus 22 Philip cometh and telleth Andrew and again Andrew and Philip told Jesus 23 ¶ And Jesus answered them saying The hour is come that the Son of man should be glorified 24 Verily verily I say unto you Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die it abideth alone but if it die it bringeth forth much fruit 25 * Mat. 10 39. He that loveth his life shall lose it and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal 26 It any man serve me let him follow me and where I am there shall also my servant be if any man serve me him will my Father honour 27 Now is my soul troubled and what shall I say Father save me from this hour but for this cause came I unto this hour 28 Father glorifie thy name Then came there a voice from heaven saying I have both glorified it and will glorifie it again 29 The people therefore that stood by and heard it said that it thundred others said An angel spake to him 30 Jesus answered and said This voice came not because of me but for your sakes 31 Now is the judgement of this world now shall the prince of this world be cast out 32 And I if I be lifted up from the earth will draw all men unto me 33 This he said signifying what death he should die 34 The people answered him * Pla. 110.4 We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever and how sayest thou The Son of man must be lift up who is this Son of man 35 Then Jesus said unto them Yet a little while is the light with you walk while ye have the light lest darkness come upon you for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth 36 While ye have light beleeve in the light that ye may be the children of light These things spake Jesus and departed and did hide himself from them 37 ¶ But though he had done so many miracles before them yet they beleeved not on him 38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled which he spake * Is 53.1 Rom. 10.19 Lord who hath beleeved our report and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed 39 Therefore they could not beleeve because that Esaias said again 40 * Mat. 13.14 He hath blinded their eyes and hardned their heart that they should not see with their eyes nor understand with their heart and be converted and I should heal them 41 These things said Esaias when he saw his glory spake of him 42 ¶ Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many beleeved on him but because of the Pharisees they did not consess him lest they should be put out of the synagogue 43 * Chap. 5.44 For they loved
end the promise might be sure to all the seed not to that onely which is of the law but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham who is the father of us all 17 As it is written * Gen. 27.5 I have made thee a father of many nations ‖ Or like unto him before him whom he beleeved even God who quickneth the dead and calleth those things which be not as though they were 18 Who against hope beleeved in hope that he might become the father of many nations according to that which was spoken * Gen. 15.5 So shall thy seed be 19 And being not weak in faith he considered not his own body now dead when he was about an hundred year old neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb 20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief but was strong in faith giving glory to God 21 And being fully perswaded that what he had promised he was able also to perform 22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness 23 Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him 24 But for us also to whom it shall be imputed it we beleeve on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead 25 Who was delivered for our offences and was raised again for our justification CHAP. V. 1 Being justified by faith we have peace with God 2 and joy in our hope 8 that sith we were reconciled by his bloud when we were enemies 10 we shall much more be saved being reconciled 12 As sin and death came by Adam 17 so much more righteousness and life by Jesus Christ 20 Where sin abounded grace did superabound THerefore being justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ 2 * Eph. 2.18 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand and rejoyce in hope of the glory of God 3 And not onely so but we glory in tribulations also * James 1.3 knowing that tribulation worketh patience 4 And patience experience and experience hope 5 And hope maketh not ashamed because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the holy Ghost which is given unto us 6 For when we were yet without strength ‖ Or according to the time in due time Christ died for the ungodly 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die 8 But God commendeth his love towards us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us 9 Muâ—h more then being now justified by his bloud we shall be saved from wrath through him 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son much more being reconciled we shall be saved by his life 11 And not onely so but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ by whom we have now received the atonement 12 Wherefore as by one man sin entred into the world and death by sin and so death passed upon all men ‖ Or in whom for that all have sinned 13 For until the saw sin was in the world but sin is not imputed when there is no law 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adams transgression who is the figure of him that was to come 15 But not as the offence so also is the free gift For if through the offence of one many be dead much more the grace of God and the gift by grace which is by one man Jesus Christ hath abounded unto many 16 And not as it was by one that sinned so is the gift for the judgement was by one to condemnation but the free gift is of many offences unto justification 17 For if ‖ Or by one offence by one mans offence death reigned by one much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one Jesus Christ 18 Therefore as ‖ Or by one offence by the offence of one judgement came upon all men to condemnation even so ‖ Or by one righteousness by the rigiteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life 19 For as by one mans disobedience many were made sinners so by the obedience of one shall many he made righteous 20 Moreover the law entred that the offence might abound But where sin abounded grace did much more abound 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. CHAP. VI. 1 We may not live in sin 2 for we are dead unto it 3 as appeareth by our baptism 12 Let not sin reign any more 18 because we have yeelded our selves to the service of righteousness 23 and for that death is the wages of sin WHat shall we say then Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound 2 God forbid how shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein 3 Know ye not that * Gal. 3.27 so many of us as ‖ Or art were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death 4 Therefore we are * Col. 2.12 buried with him by baptism into death that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father even so we also should walk in newness of life 5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection 6 Knowing this that our old man is crucified with him that the body of sin might be destroyed that henceforth we should not serve sin 7 For he that is dead is †Gr. justified freed from sin 8 Now if we be dead with Christ we beleeve that we shall also live with him 9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more death hath no more dominion over him 10 For in that he died he died unto sin once but in that he liveth he liveth unto God 11 Likewise reckon ye also your selves to be dead indeed unto sin but a live unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof 13 Neither yeeld ye your members as †Gr. arms or weapons instruments of unrighteousness unto sin but yeeld your selves unto God as those that are a live from the dead and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you for ye are not under the law but under grace 15 What then shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace God forbid 16 Know ye not that * Joh. 8.34 2 Pet. 2.19 to whom ye yeeld your selves servants to obey his servants ye are to whom ye obey whether of sin
unto death or of obedience unto righteousness 17 But God be thanked that ye were the servants of sin but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine †Gr. whereto ye were delivered which was delivered you 18 Being then made free from sin ye became the servants of righteousness 19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh for as ye have yeelded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity even so now yeeld your members servants to righteousness unto holiness 20 For when ye were the servants of sin ye were free †Gr. to righteousness from righteousness 21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed for the end of those things is death 22 But now being made free from sin and become servants to God ye have your fruit unto holiness and the end everlasting life 23 For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. CHAP. VII 1 No law hath power over a man longer then he liveth 4 But we are dead to the law 7 Yet is not the law sin 12 but holy just good 16 as I acknowledge who am grieved because I cannot keep it KNow ye not brethren for I speak to them that know the law how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth 2 For * 1 Cor. 7.39 the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth but if the husband be dead she is loosed from the law of her husband 3 So then if while her husband liveth she be married to another man she shall be called an adulteress but if her husband be dead she is free from that law so that she is no adulteress though she be married to another man 4 Wherefore my brethren ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ that ye should be married to another even to him who is raised from the dead that we should bring forth fruit unto God 5 For when we were in the flesh the †Gr. passions motions of sins which were by the law did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death 6 But now we are delivered from the law ‖ Or being dead to that that being dead wherein we were held that we should serve in newness of spirit and not in the oldness of the letter 7 What shall we say then Is the law sin God forbid Nay I had not known sin but by the law for I had not known ‖ Or concupiscence lust except the law had said * Ex. 20.17 Deut. 5.21 Thou shalt not cover 8 But sin taking occasion by the commandment wrought in me all manner of concupiscence For without the law sin was dead 9 For I was alive without the law once but when the commandment came sin revived and I died 10 And the commandment which was ordained to life I found to be unto death 11 For sin taking occasion by the commandment deceived me and by it slew me 12 Wherefore the law is holy and the commandment holy and just and good 13 Was then that which is good made death unto me God forbid But sin that it might appear sin working death in me by that which is good that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful 14 For we know that the law is spiritual but I am carnal sold under sin 15 For that which I do I †Gr. know allow not for what I would that do I not but what I hate that do I. 16 If then I do that which I would not I consent unto the law that it is good 17 Now then it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me 18 For I know that in me that is in my flesh dwelleth no good thing for to will is present with me but how to perform that which is good I finde not 19 For the good that I would I do not but the evil which I would not that I do 20 Now if I do that I would not it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me 21 I finde then a law that when I would do good evil is present with me 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man 23 But I see another law in my members warring against the law of my minde and bringing me into â—aptivity to the law of sin which is in my members 24 O wretched man that I am who shall deliver me from ‖ Or this body of death the body of this death 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the minde I my self serve the law of God but with the flesh the law of sin CHAP. VIII 1 They that are in Christ and live according to the Spirit are free from condemnation 5 13 What harm cometh of the flesh 6 14 and what good of the Spirit 17 and what of being Gods children 19 whose glorious deliverance all things long for 29 It was beforehand dâ—creed from God 38 What can sever us from his love THere is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and ‖ Or by a sacrifice for sin for sin condemned sin in the flesh 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit 5 For they that are after the flesh do minde the things of the flesh but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit 6 For †Gr. the minding of the flesh to be carnally minded is death but †Gr. the minding of the Spirit to be spiritually minded is life and peace 7 Because †Gr. the minding of the flesh the carnal minde is enmity against God for it is not subject to the law of God neither indeed can be 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God 9 But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of his 10 And if Christ be in you the body is dead because of sin but the Spirit is life because of righteousness 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies ‖ Or because of his Spirit by his Spirit that dwelleth in you 12 Therefore brethren we are debters not to
equal with God 7 But made himself of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant and was made in the ‖ Or habit likeness of men 8 And being found in fashion as a man he humbled himself and became obedient unto death even the death of the cross 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow of things in heaven and things in earth and things under the earth 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Chist is Lord to the glory of God the Father 12 Wherefore my beloved as ye have always obeyed not as in my presence onely but now much more in my absence work out your own salvation with fear and trembling 13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure 14 Do all things without murmurings and disputings 15 That ye may be blameless and ‖ Or sincere harmless the sons of God without rebuke in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation among whom ‖ Or â—â—ine ye ye shine as lights in the world 16 Holding forth the word of life that I may rejoyce in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain neither laboured in vain 17 Yea and if I be †Gr. poured forth offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith I joy and rejoyce with you all 18 For the same cause also do ye joy and rejoyce with me 19 ‖ Or Moreover But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you that I also may be of good comfort when I know your state 20 For I have no man ‖ Or so dear unto me like-minded who will naturally care for your state 21 For all * 1 Cor. 10.24 seek their own not the things which are Jesus Christs 22 But ye know the proof of him that as a son with the Father he hath served with me in the gospel 23 Him therefore I hope to send presently so soon as I shall see how it will go with me 24 But I trust in the Lord that I also my self shall come shortly 25 Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus my brother and companion in labour and fellow-souldier but your messenger and he that ministred to my wants 26 For he longed after you all and was full of heaviness because that ye had heard that he had been sick 27 For indeed he was sick nigh unto death but God had mercy on him and not on him onely but on me also lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow 28 I sent him therefore the more carefully that when ye see him again ye may rejoyce and that I may be the less sorrowful 29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness and ‖ Or honour â—â—th hold such in reputation 30 Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death not regarding his life to supply your lack of service toward me CHAP. III. 1 He warneth them to beware of the false teachers of the circumcision 4 shewing that himself hath greater cause then they to trust in the righteousness of the law 7 which notwithstanding he counteth as dung loss to gain Christ and his righteousness 12 therein acknowledging his own imperfection 15 He exhorteth them to be thus minded 17 and to imitate him 18 and to decline the ways of carnal Christians FInally my brethren rejoyce in the Lord. To write the same things to you to me indeed is not grievous but for you it is safe 2 Beware of dogs beware of evil workers beware of the concision 3 For we are the circumcision which worship God in the spirit and rejoyce in Christ Jesus and have no confidence in the flesh 4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh I more 5 Circumcised the eighth day * 2 Cor. 11.22 of the stock of Israel of the tribe of Bâ—njamin an Hebrew of the Hebrews as touching the law * Act. 2â— 6 a Pharisee 6 Concerning zeal persecuting the church touching the righteousness which is in the law blameless 7 But what things were gain to me those I counted loss for Christ 8 Yea doubtless and I count all things bâ—t loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord for whom I have suffered the loss of all things do count them but dung that I may win Christ 9 And be found in him not having mine own righteousness which is of the law but that which is through the faith of Christ the righteousness which is of God by faith 10 That I may know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings being made conformable unto his death 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead 12 Not as though I had already attained either were already perfect but I follow alter if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus 13 Brethren I count not my self to have apprehended but this one thing I do forgetting those things which are behinde and reaching forth unto those things which are before 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus 15 Let us therefore as many as be perfect be thus minded and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded God shall reveal even this unto you 16 Nevertheless whereto we have already attained let us walk by the same rule let us minde the same thing 17 Brethren be followers together of me and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample 18 For many walk of whom I have told you often and now tell you even weeping that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ 19 Whos 's end is destruction whose God is their belly and whose glory is in their shame who minde earthly things 20 For our conversation is in heaven from whence also we * 1 Cor. 1.7 Tit. 2.13 look for the Saviour the Lord Jesus Christ 21 Who shall change our vile body that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body according to the working whereby he is able even to sâ—bdue all things unto himself CHAP. IV. 1 From particular admonitions 4 he proceedeth to general exhortations 10 shewing how be rejoyced at their liberality towards him lying in prison not so much for the supply of his own wants as for the grace of God in them 19 and so he concludeth with prayer and salutations THerefore my brethren dearly beloved and longed for my joy and crown so stand fast in the Lord my dearly beloved 2 I beseech Euodias and beseech Syntyche that they be of the same minde in the Lord. 3 And I intreat thee also true yoke-fellow help those women which laboured
commaâ—dment but I will obey the commandment of the law that was given unto our fathers by Moses 31 And thou that hast been the authour of all mischief against the Hebrews shalt not escape the hands of God 32 For we suffer because of our sins 33 And though the living Lord be angry with us a little while for our chastning and correction yet shall he beat one again with his servants 34 But thou O godless man and of all other most wicked be not lifted up without a cause nor puffed up with uncertain hopes lifting up thy hand against the servants of God 35 For thou hast not yet escaped the judgement of almighty God who seeth all things 36 For our brethren who now have suffered a short pain are dead under Gods covenant of everlasting life but thou through the judgement of God shalt receive just punishment for thy pride 37 But I as my brethren offer up my body and life for the laws of our fathers beseeching God that he would speedily be merciful unto our nation and that thou by torments and plagues mayest confess that he alone is God 38 And that in me and my brethren the wrath of the Almighty which is justly brought upon all our nation may cease 39 Then the king being in a rage handled him worse then all the rest and took it grievously that he was mocked 40 So this man died undefiled and put his whole trust in the Lord. 41 Last of all after the sons the mother died 42 Let this be enough now to have spoken concerning the idolatrous feasts and the extreme tortures CHAP. VIII 1 Judas gathereth an host 9 Nicanor is sent against him who Presumeth to make much money of his prisoners 16 Judas encourageth his men and putteth Nicanor to flight 18 and divideth the spoils 30 Other enemies are also defeated 35 and Nicanor fleeth with grief to Antioch THen Judas Maccabeus and they that were with him went privily into the towns and called their kins folks together and took unto them all such as continued in the Jews religion and assembled about six thousand men 2 And they called upon the Lord that he would look upon the people that was troden down of all and also pity the temple profaned of ungodly men 3 And that he would have compassion upon the city sore defaced and ready to be made even with the ground and hear the bloud that cried unto him 4 And remember the wicked slaughter of harmless infants and the blasphemies committed against his name and that he would shew his hatred against the wicked 5 Now when Maccabeus had his company about him he could not be withstood by the heathen for the wrath of the Lord was turned into mercy 6 Therefore he came at unawares and burnt up towns and cities and got into his hands the most commodious places and overcame and put to flight no small number of his enemies 7 But specially took he advantage of the night for such privy attempts insomuch that the bruit of his manliness was spread every where 8 So when Philip saw that this man increased by little and little and that things prospered with him still more and more he wrote unto Ptolemeus the governour of Celosyria and Phenice to yeeld more aid to the kings affairs 9 Then forthwith choosing Nicanor the son of Patroclus one of his special friends he sent him with no fewer then twenty thousand of all nations under him to root out the whole generation of the Jews and with him he joyned also Gorgias a captain who in matters of war had great experience 10 So Nicanor undertook to make so much money of the captive Jews as should defray the tribute of two thousand talents which the king was to pay to the Romanes 11 Wherefore immediately he sent to the cities upon the sea-coast proclaiming a sale of the captive Jews and promising that they should have fourscore and ten bodies for one talent not expecting the vengeance that was to follow upon him from the almighty God 12 Now when word was brought unto Judas of Nicanors coming and he had imparted unto those that were with him that the army was at hand 13 They that were fearful and distrusted the justice of God fled and conveyed themselves away 14 Others sold all that they had left and withal besought the Lord to deliver them being sold by the wicked Nicanor before they met together 15 And if not for their own sakes yet for the covenants he had made with their fathers and for his holy and glorious name sake by which they were called 16 So Maccabeus called his men together unto the number of six thousand and exhorted them not to be stricken with terrour of the enemy nor to fear the great multitude of the heathen who came wrongfully against them but to fight manfully 17 And to set before their eyes the injury that they had unjustly done to the holy place and the cruel handling of the city whereof they made a mockery and also the taking away of the government of their forefathers 18 For they said he trust in their weapons and holdness but our confidence is in the almighty God who at a beck can cast down both them that come against us and also all the world 19 Moreover he recounted unto them what helps their forefathers had found and how they were delivered when under Sennacherib an hundred fourscore and five thousand perished 20 And he told them of the battel that they had in Babylon with the Galatians how they came but eight thousand in all to the business with four thousand Macedonians and that the Macedonians being perplexed the eight thousand destroyed an hundred and twenty thousand because of the help that they had from heaven and so received a great booty 21 Thus when he had made them bold with these words and ready to die for the laws and the countrey he divided his army into four parts 22 And joyned with himself his own brethren leaders of each band to wit Simon and Josepâ— and Jonathan giving each one fifteen hundred men 23 Also be appointed Eleazar to read the holy book and when he had given them this watch-word The help of God himself leading the first band he joyned battel with Nicanor 24 And by the help of the Almighty they slew above nine thousand of their enemies and wounded and maimed the most part of Nicanors host and so put all to flight 25 And took their money that came to buy them and pursued them far but lacking time they returned 26 For it was the day before the sabbath and therefore they would no longer pursue them 27 So when they had gathered ‖ That is the enemies armour their armour together and spoiled their enemies they occupied themselves about the sabbath yeelding exceeding praise and thanks to the Lord who had preserved them unto that day which was the beginning of mercy distilling upon them 28 And after the sabbath when they had
