to_o be_v justify_v or_o save_v by_o their_o good_a work_n that_o by_o this_o mean_v he_o may_v bring_v he_o to_o a_o true_a sight_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o humble_v he_o before_o god_n if_o it_o may_v be_v this_o be_v the_o end_n our_o saviour_n aim_v at_o in_o refer_v he_o to_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n and_o require_v he_o to_o keep_v they_o perfect_o if_o he_o will_v enter_v into_o life_n that_o he_o may_v by_o this_o mean_n discover_v to_o he_o his_o sin_n and_o the_o imperfection_n of_o his_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n although_o the_o young_a man_n do_v not_o make_v so_o good_a use_n as_o he_o shall_v have_v do_v of_o our_o saviour_n admonition_n but_o stand_v still_o to_o justify_v himself_o as_o if_o he_o have_v already_o keep_v the_o law_n perfect_o etc._n etc._n howsoever_o by_o the_o scope_n and_o drift_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o urge_v he_o to_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o law_n thereby_o to_o humble_v he_o if_o it_o may_v be_v in_o sight_n of_o his_o drive_v they_o out_o of_o themselves_o to_o seek_v salvation_n by_o faith_n in_o christ_n alone_o etc._n etc._n then_o be_v thus_o by_o the_o law_n true_o humble_v etc._n etc._n they_o be_v fit_a to_o hear_v the_o glad_a tiding_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o never_o till_o then_o which_o show_v the_o folly_n and_o ignorance_n of_o such_o as_o will_v not_o have_v the_o law_n preach_v but_o the_o gospel_n only_o these_o be_v their_o own_o enemy_n and_o this_o be_v all_o one_o as_o if_o a_o chirurgeon_n shall_v first_o lay_v on_o a_o heaâ—ing_a plaster_n to_o skin_n over_o a_o wound_n or_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o matter_n and_o true_a meaning_n of_o they_o and_o herein_o we_o shall_v outstrip_v this_o young_a ruler_n who_o although_o he_o have_v some_o literal_a knowledge_n in_o the_o law_n and_o do_v also_o in_o some_o measure_n no_o doubt_n understand_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o commandment_n yet_o not_o so_o true_o or_o thorough_o as_o he_o shall_v have_v do_v as_o the_o word_n touch_v the_o instruction_n to_o be_v gather_v from_o they_o they_o have_v be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n speak_v of_o before_o ver_fw-la 14._o &_o 21._o therefore_o i_o will_v not_o here_o insist_v upon_o they_o only_o let_v we_o note_v this_o that_o from_o the_o example_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v so_o diligent_a in_o preach_v in_o so_o many_o town_n throughout_o all_o galilee_n minister_n of_o the_o word_n may_v learn_v the_o like_a pain_n and_o diligence_n in_o discharge_n of_o their_o ministry_n especial_o in_o preach_v the_o word_n this_o diligence_n be_v much_o urge_v unto_o we_o in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n our_o saviour_n give_v peter_n a_o special_a charge_n to_o feed_v his_o lamb_n and_o sheep_n joh._n 21._o repeat_v it_o thrice_o to_o stir_v he_o up_o to_o the_o evangelist_n here_o brief_o touch_v the_o miracle_n which_o our_o saviour_n wrought_v in_o this_o his_o progress_n or_o travel_v throughout_o galilee_n st._n matthew_n do_v mention_v they_o that_o be_v mention_v by_o mark_n and_o luke_n but_o another_o cure_v at_o another_o time_n a_o good_a while_n after_o but_o the_o reason_n which_o they_o allege_v to_o this_o purpose_n be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o prove_v they_o to_o be_v two_o several_a history_n therefore_o i_o here_o yield_v to_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o most_o and_o sound_a interpreter_n who_o take_v it_o to_o be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o leper_n that_o be_v mention_v by_o all_o the_o three_o evangelist_n to_o have_v be_v heal_v by_o our_o saviour_n touch_v the_o place_n where_o this_o miracle_n be_v wrought_v st._n luke_n say_v it_o be_v some_o city_n of_o galilee_n not_o far_o off_o from_o capernaum_n because_o present_o upon_o the_o mention_n of_o this_o miracle_n st._n matthew_n set_v down_o the_o history_n of_o christ_n go_v into_o capernaum_n and_o cure_v of_o the_o centurion_n servant_n there_o as_o we_o see_v matth._n 8._o 5._o touch_v the_o time_n when_o this_o miracle_n be_v wrought_v it_o be_v as_o it_o seem_v present_o after_o our_o saviour_n have_v finish_v that_o his_o large_a and_o excellent_a sermon_n preach_v on_o the_o mount_n as_o may_v appear_v matth._n 8._o 1_o 2._o to_o they_o be_v to_o urge_v and_o press_v such_o with_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o second_o table_n in_o duty_n of_o charity_n mercy_n and_o just_a deal_n towards_o man_n this_o be_v a_o ready_a way_n and_o mean_n to_o convince_v and_o humble_v they_o for_o their_o hypocrisy_n and_o unsoundness_n in_o duty_n of_o piety_n and_o religion_n require_v in_o the_o first_o table_n and_o this_o also_o may_v teach_v every_o professor_n of_o religion_n that_o be_v forward_o in_o duty_n of_o the_o first_o table_n how_o to_o try_v his_o own_o sincerity_n in_o those_o duty_n let_v he_o examine_v his_o heart_n and_o life_n what_o conscience_n he_o make_v of_o duty_n of_o the_o second_o table_n if_o none_o at_o all_o but_o do_v live_v in_o know_a sin_n against_o the_o second_o table_n of_o the_o commandment_n as_o in_o malice_n envy_n unjustice_n fraud_n oppression_n etc._n etc._n it_o be_v a_o evident_a argument_n that_o his_o heart_n be_v not_o upright_o in_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o first_o table_n whatsoever_o profession_n or_o show_n he_o make_v though_o never_o so_o glorious_a for_o certain_a it_o be_v which_o the_o apostle_n affirm_v 1_o joh._n 4._o 20._o if_o a_o man_n say_v i_o love_v god_n and_o hate_v his_o brother_n he_o be_v a_o liar_n for_o he_o that_o love_v not_o his_o brother_n who_o he_o have_v see_v etc._n etc._n observe_v 2_o observe_v 2._o in_o that_o our_o saviour_n here_o in_o allege_v these_o commandment_n of_o the_o second_o table_n to_o this_o young_a ruler_n do_v especial_o urge_v that_o commandment_n in_o which_o the_o young_a man_n most_o fail_v viz._n the_o 8_o commandment_n of_o steal_v which_o condemn_v the_o sin_n of_o covetousness_n with_o which_o this_o young_a man_n be_v so_o much_o taint_v therefore_o our_o saviour_n do_v not_o only_o name_v that_o commandment_n but_o further_a press_v it_o by_o add_v a_o clause_n or_o sentence_n in_o way_n of_o explication_n of_o it_o in_o the_o word_n defraud_v not_o this_o may_v teach_v we_o enough_o if_o they_o refrain_v from_o outward_a gross_a sin_n before_o man_n and_o if_o they_o perform_v some_o outward_a duty_n of_o religion_n towards_o god_n and_o of_o charity_n to_o man_n if_o they_o come_v to_o church_n due_o hear_v the_o word_n receive_v the_o sacrament_n and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o use_v prayer_n in_o their_o family_n though_o this_o be_v whole_o neglect_v by_o a_o great_a many_o if_o they_o have_v some_o care_n of_o the_o outward_a sanctify_v of_o the_o sabbath_n and_o if_o withal_o they_o do_v perform_v such_o outward_a duty_n of_o charity_n and_o justice_n towards_o man_n as_o be_v require_v in_o the_o second_o table_n of_o the_o commandment_n then_o they_o think_v all_o be_v well_o and_o they_o rest_v in_o this_o outward_a conformity_n to_o the_o law_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n make_v no_o conscience_n of_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a obedience_n to_o the_o same_o but_o harbour_v gross_a sin_n and_o corruption_n in_o their_o heart_n both_o against_o god_n and_o man._n thus_o be_v it_o with_o many_o if_o not_o with_o the_o great_a part_n of_o such_o as_o bear_v the_o name_n of_o christian_n now_o adays_o which_o show_v how_o great_a the_o number_n be_v of_o formal_a and_o close_a hypocrite_n and_o how_o small_a the_o number_n be_v of_o sound_a christian_n and_o how_o true_a it_o be_v which_o the_o scripture_n have_v foretell_v touch_v these_o last_o and_o dangerous_a time_n in_o which_o we_o now_o live_v that_o man_n shall_v have_v a_o outward_a form_n of_o godliness_n deny_v the_o inward_a power_n and_o life_n of_o it_o 2_o tim._n 3._o formal_a hypocrisy_n be_v one_o of_o the_o reign_a sin_n of_o these_o time_n the_o epidemical_a disease_n of_o christian_n yet_o fearful_a and_o dangerous_a to_o be_v lament_v with_o a_o fountain_n of_o tear_n use_v 2_o use_v 2._o for_o admonition_n to_o every_o one_o of_o we_o to_o take_v heed_n of_o this_o property_n of_o formal_a and_o close_a hypocrite_n that_o we_o do_v not_o rest_v in_o outward_a conformity_n and_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n with_o the_o outward_a man_n and_o in_o outward_a carriage_n as_o if_o this_o be_v sufficient_a and_o as_o much_o as_o god_n require_v but_o above_o all_o to_o make_v conscience_n of_o yield_v the_o true_a inward_a obedience_n of_o the_o heart_n unto_o every_o commandment_n of_o god_n remember_v that_o the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v spiritual_a bind_v the_o heart_n and_o conscience_n and_o that_o god_n himself_o be_v a_o spirit_n and_o will_v be_v obey_v in_o spirit_n and_o truth_n the_o rather_o let_v we_o take_v heed_n of_o this_o formal_a hypocrisy_n and_o rest_v in_o outward_a obedience_n to_o
the_o law_n of_o god_n because_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n so_o natural_a to_o we_o and_o such_o a_o sin_n as_o not_o only_o gross_a hypocrite_n be_v guilty_a of_o but_o even_o good_a christian_n be_v too_o much_o taint_v with_o it_o therefore_o every_o one_o to_o strive_v against_o it_o and_o on_o the_o contrary_a to_o labour_v first_o and_o principal_o for_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n and_o to_o
