7.13_o all_o which_o show_v that_o the_o contempt_n yea_o neglect_v of_o god_n word_n be_v not_o so_o small_a a_o sin_n as_o we_o apprehend_v it_o to_o be_v how_o then_o shall_v thou_o be_v humble_v who_o have_v be_v so_o often_o guilty_a of_o this_o sin_n see_v we_o not_o when_o malefactor_n be_v bring_v to_o the_o place_n of_o the_o execution_n even_o for_o cry_v sin_n that_o yet_o this_o sin_n make_v thy_o sin_n to_o be_v exceed_o sinful_a it_o be_v fearful_a to_o sin_n against_o the_o very_a light_n of_o nature_n as_o be_v clear_a by_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o lord_n wrath_n upon_o belshazzar_n dan._n 5._o and_o upon_o these_o rom._n 1._o they_o have_v but_o the_o very_a light_n of_o nature_n and_o yet_o because_o they_o abuse_v even_o but_o that_o light_n because_o when_o they_o know_v god_n they_o glorify_v he_o not_o as_o god_n neither_o be_v thankful_a therefore_o he_o give_v they_o over_o to_o a_o reprobate_a mind_n and_o far_o more_o fearful_a be_v it_o to_o sin_n against_o the_o light_n of_o the_o write_a law_n for_o that_o be_v a_o clear_a light_n and_o so_o we_o see_v the_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n be_v precise_o and_o peremptory_o punish_v every_o transgression_n receive_v a_o just_a recompense_n of_o reward_n but_o most_o fearful_a and_o sinful_a of_o all_o be_v it_o to_o sin_n against_o the_o most_o clear_a light_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o offer_n of_o salvation_n in_o it_o as_o be_v clear_a out_o of_o these_o two_o place_n heb._n 2.1_o heb._n 10.28_o 29._o and_o our_o saviour_n say_v plain_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v easy_a in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n even_o for_o sodom_n and_o gomorrah_n than_o it_o shall_v be_v for_o the_o neglecter_n of_o the_o gospel_n consider_v then_o how_o thou_o have_v sin_v in_o this_o last_o kind_n and_o so_o how_o great_a thy_o sin_n must_v be_v be_v the_o breaker_n of_o the_o law_n severe_o punish_v yea_o even_o those_o who_o have_v nothing_o but_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n o_o what_o say_v that_o they_o keep_v the_o rule_n seek_v first_o or_o chief_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n 2._o they_o be_v not_o diligent_a but_o slothful_a desire_n wish_v to_o die_v the_o death_n but_o they_o may_v perhaps_o leave_v many_o sin_n as_o be_v to_o be_v see_v in_o herod_n not_o do_v all_o that_o be_v command_v as_o be_v to_o be_v see_v in_o the_o young_a man_n in_o the_o gospel_n notwithstanding_o he_o do_v seem_v to_o have_v a_o very_a forward_a and_o fervent_a desire_n of_o salvation_n still_o they_o stick_v and_o stand_v at_o something_o and_o howsoever_o they_o seek_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n yet_o add_v they_o not_o this_o and_o the_o righteousness_n thereof_o 3._o they_o be_v not_o stable_a nor_o constant_a desire_n but_o fit_v and_o start_n unconstant_a motion_n like_o the_o morning_n dew_n so_o that_o if_o they_o work_v at_o all_o yet_o do_v they_o not_o work_v out_o their_o salvation_n so_o that_o you_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o be_v put_v by_o the_o comfort_n of_o this_o point_n because_o of_o any_o desire_n in_o the_o wicked_a and_o unregenerate_a this_o way_n your_o desire_n be_v 1._o deep_a and_o serious_a such_o as_o can_v not_o be_v put_v off_o but_o with_o satisfaction_n in_o some_o measure_n in_o the_o point_n itself_o 2._o you_o seek_v first_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n your_o heart_n run_v more_o upon_o this_o point_n of_o your_o own_o salvation_n and_o it_o go_v near_o unto_o your_o heart_n than_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o 〈◊〉_d 3_o you_o seek_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n and_o the_o righteousness_n thereof_o and_o that_o you_o have_v a_o respect_n to_o all_o god_n commandment_n decline_v no_o duty_n entertain_v no_o sin_n and_o in_o thus_o do_v you_o shall_v not_o be_v ashamed_a last_o thy_o desire_n be_v christianity_n and_o well_o buckle_v with_o all_o christian_a duty_n but_o many_o time_n afterward_o there_o will_v be_v a_o fall_v away_o from_o their_o first_o care_n and_o diligence_n even_o the_o wise_a virgin_n will_v slumber_v christ_n own_o spouse_n sleep_v when_o her_o heart_n wake_v but_o herein_o stand_v the_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o instability_n and_o inconstancy_n of_o the_o wicked_n desire_n and_o of_o the_o godlies'_n that_o the_o godly_a although_o they_o remit_v sometime_o somewhat_o of_o the_o degree_n of_o their_o desire_n and_o care_v this_o way_n yet_o do_v they_o never_o altogether_o return_v to_o their_o former_a security_n which_o they_o have_v before_o their_o waken_n and_o conversion_n they_o may_v fall_v from_o their_o first_o care_n and_o diligence_n but_o not_o from_o all_o care_n and_o diligence_n the_o wise_a virgin_n do_v slumber_n but_o be_v not_o dead_a the_o spouse_n sleep_v but_o her_o heart_n wake_v there_o will_v be_v ever_o something_a waken_n and_o stir_v the_o heart_n of_o god_n child_n whereas_o the_o wicked_a grow_v altogether_o as_o secure_v and_o sluggish_a yea_o more_o like_a water_n heat_v which_o grow_v cold_a than_o before_o this_o no_o doubt_n if_o you_o apply_v it_o to_o yourself_o will_v give_v you_o some_o resolution_n and_o comfort_n and_o thus_o far_o for_o this_o point_n 2._o now_o for_o the_o second_o point_n it_o be_v also_o true_a that_o the_o wicked_a and_o unregenerate_a may_v have_v a_o sight_n of_o their_o own_o corruption_n wickedness_n and_o sinfulness_n but_o it_o be_v also_o far_o from_o the_o degree_n and_o kind_n of_o that_o sight_n of_o sin_n and_o corruption_n which_o the_o regenerate_a and_o god_n own_o child_n have_v who_o have_v get_v the_o eyesalve_n the_o special_a illumination_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o be_v enlighten_v by_o that_o true_a light_n who_o lighten_v every_o man_n that_o come_v into_o the_o world_n they_o see_v more_o than_o flesh_n and_o blood_n can_v reveal_v unto_o they_o the_o difference_n may_v be_v especial_o see_v in_o these_o four_o particular_n 1._o the_o wicked_a and_o unregenerate_a although_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n or_o a_o general_a illumination_n they_o see_v some_o outward_a gross_a corruption_n corruption_n of_o their_o flesh_n as_o fornication_n murder_n etc._n etc._n yet_o see_v they_o not_o their_o inward_a secret_a corruption_n no_o less_o reign_v and_o rage_v in_o they_o and_o no_o less_o odious_a unto_o god_n their_o pride_n their_o hypocrisy_n their_o infidelity_n their_o impatience_n their_o spiritual_a idolatry_n and_o whore_v after_o the_o creature_n they_o see_v not_o the_o filthiness_n of_o the_o spirit_n 2_o cor._n 7._o 2._o although_o they_o see_v sin_n in_o the_o branch_n and_o fruit_n yet_o see_v they_o it_o not_o in_o the_o root_n and_o fountain_n they_o see_v not_o into_o that_o original_a corruption_n of_o their_o nature_n the_o blindness_n error_n and_o vanity_n of_o their_o mind_n the_o great_a averseness_n and_o rebellion_n of_o their_o will_n the_o inordinatenesse_n and_o earthliness_n of_o their_o affection_n the_o deadness_n of_o their_o conscience_n the_o hardness_n whore_v hypocrisy_n and_o desperate_a wickedness_n of_o their_o heart_n they_o see_v not_o that_o body_n of_o death_n rom._n 7.24_o 3._o they_o see_v not_o all_o their_o spiritual_a want_n but_o think_v themselves_o as_o be_v to_o be_v see_v in_o the_o church_n of_o laodicea_n to_o be_v rich_a and_o to_o have_v need_n of_o nothing_o to_o believe_v in_o christ_n as_o well_o as_o any_o to_o love_n god_n as_o well_o as_o any_o etc._n etc._n 4._o and_o last_o they_o see_v not_o the_o manifold_a imperfection_n of_o their_o best_a service_n but_o with_o the_o pharisee_fw-mi rest_n upon_o the_o bare_a outward_a performance_n not_o ponder_v their_o own_o heart_n nor_o consider_v that_o the_o lord_n ponder_v they_o the_o way_n of_o a_o man_n seem_v good_a in_o his_o own_o eye_n but_o the_o lord_n ponder_v the_o heart_n whereas_o the_o child_n of_o god_n on_o the_o contrary_n acknowledge_v all_o their_o righteousness_n to_o be_v but_o a_o menstruous_a cloth_n in_o a_o word_n the_o natural_a and_o unregenerate_a man_n light_n and_o sight_n of_o sin_n be_v but_o like_o a_o ordinary_a light_n whether_o candlelight_n or_o daylight_n while_o enter_v into_o a_o room_n will_v discover_v any_o great_a or_o gross_a filthiness_n whereas_o the_o light_n of_o the_o regenerate_a be_v like_o the_o light_n of_o the_o sunbeam_n which_o enter_v into_o a_o place_n discover_v the_o very_a small_a moat_n in_o it_o this_o be_v clear_o to_o be_v see_v in_o paul_n rom._n 7._o before_o his_o regeneration_n and_o the_o come_n in_o of_o the_o light_n of_o god_n spirit_n by_o the_o law_n he_o have_v a_o good_a conceit_n of_o himself_o he_o see_v not_o concupiscence_n to_o be_v sin_n but_o afterward_o he_o get_v afar_o other_o sight_n of_o sin_n and_o of_o himself_o for_o i_o be_v serious_a have_v not_o be_v deep_o enough_o to_o bruise_v out_o all_o corruption_n thou_o shall_v be_v ashamed_a and_o disappoint_v of_o the_o religion_n thou_o have_v because_o thou_o have_v consider_v the_o particular_a mean_n the_o fit_a and_o near_a mean_n to_o beget_v or_o strengthen_v such_o a_o grace_n and_o for_o want_v of_o this_o we_o may_v take_v very_o great_a pain_n in_o general_a and_o we_o shall_v hardly_o speed_v and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v see_v how_o far_o the_o work_n be_v proceed_v in_o etc._n etc._n and_o as_o what_o our_o want_n be_v and_o where_o the_o stop_n lie_v and_o then_o to_o pray_v and_o to_o use_n mean_v most_o diligent_o and_o to_o use_v the_o particular_a and_o near_a mean_n and_o therefore_o i_o think_v it_o most_o needful_a to_o lay_v out_o the_o near_a and_o most_o particular_a mean_n of_o this_o work_n of_o humiliation_n that_o so_o we_o use_v they_o the_o lord_n blessing_n and_o concur_v by_o his_o spirit_n those_o who_o have_v not_o find_v this_o humiliation_n at_o all_o as_o yet_o may_v have_v it_o wrought_v in_o they_o and_o such_o of_o we_o who_o have_v find_v it_o in_o some_o measure_n may_v get_v it_o increase_v and_o strengthen_v and_o so_o all_o of_o we_o may_v be_v teach_v how_o to_o give_v obedience_n unto_o this_o exhortation_n humble_v yourselves_o under_o the_o mighty_a hand_n of_o god_n i._o the_o first_o and_o indeed_o a_o main_a mean_a to_o work_v humiliation_n in_o we_o be_v serious_o to_o miditatâ—_n upon_o the_o law_n &_o the_o threaten_n thereof_o and_o to_o apply_v they_o to_o ourselves_o in_o to_o a_o right_a sight_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o to_o humiliation_n for_o they_o for_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v by_o the_o law_n be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o sin_n it_o be_v the_o glass_n and_o mirror_n that_o only_o can_v let_v we_o see_v the_o foul_a spot_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o again_o to_o consider_v the_o threaten_n will_v bring_v we_o to_o humiliation_n while_o i_o be_v without_o the_o law_n i_o live_v but_o when_o the_o commandment_n come_v sin_n revive_v and_o i_o die_v will_v you_o then_o take_v a_o course_n to_o get_v this_o work_n of_o humiliation_n wrought_v first_o of_o all_o get_v the_o clear_a knowledge_n of_o god_n law_n and_o examine_v thyself_o by_o it_o lay_v the_o rule_n of_o the_o law_n to_o thy_o own_o heart_n and_o so_o see_v how_o great_a a_o transgressor_n thou_o be_v for_o want_n of_o this_o the_o most_o part_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n live_v in_o sin_n without_o know_v that_o they_o sin_n and_o so_o without_o either_o repentance_n or_o amendment_n which_o be_v both_o pitiful_a and_o dangerous_a pitiful_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o lord_n holy_a will_n dangerous_a to_o your_o own_o soul_n all_o will_v say_v they_o be_v great_a sinner_n but_o i_o fear_v they_o see_v not_o wherein_o and_o so_o can_v neither_o repent_v nor_o amend_v o_o but_o if_o thou_o will_v apply_v the_o law_n to_o thyself_o thou_o will_v see_v that_o thou_o have_v be_v and_o still_o be_v a_o exceed_a great_a transgressor_n consider_v the_o first_o command_n and_o see_v if_o thou_o do_v not_o sin_v exceed_o against_o it_o if_o thy_o heart_n do_v not_o whore_n and_o not_o to_o speak_v of_o thy_o frequent_a profane_v of_o god_n name_n see_v what_o either_o thou_o have_v do_v or_o speak_v to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n name_n notwithstanding_o it_o be_v the_o many_o thing_n that_o thou_o be_v make_v for_o look_v to_o the_o four_o command_v and_o see_v how_o thou_o have_v sanctify_v the_o sabbath_n in_o thy_o thought_n and_o discourse_n yea_o see_v if_o thou_o have_v not_o do_v in_o this_o point_n against_o thy_o light_n and_o even_o refuse_v to_o return_v and_o have_v hate_v to_o be_v reform_v choose_v rather_o to_o displease_v the_o immortal_a god_n then_o mortal_a man_n choose_v rather_o to_o follow_v thy_o own_o will_n than_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o that_o notwithstanding_o he_o have_v recommend_v it_o as_o a_o special_a point_n of_o his_o will_n unto_o thou_o and_o have_v bid_v thou_o remember_v to_o keep_v it_o holy_a consider_v the_o five_o command_v you_o that_o be_v superior_n whether_o you_o render_v to_o those_o that_o conclude_v this_o point_n think_v thou_o o_o man_n that_o do_v the_o same_o thing_n that_o thou_o shall_v escape_v the_o judgement_n of_o god_n be_v the_o lord_n changeable_a or_o be_v he_o not_o as_o great_o offend_v now_o as_o then_o or_o have_v we_o to_o do_v with_o another_o god_n or_o will_v he_o look_v to_o thy_o person_n more_o than_o to_o other_o or_o be_v thy_o sin_n less_o than_o other_o something_o thou_o must_v think_v that_o thy_o heart_n tremble_v not_o because_o of_o these_o judgement_n what_o ever_o thy_o thought_n may_v be_v assure_v thyself_o thou_o shall_v find_v that_o they_o have_v the_o advantage_n of_o thou_o if_o thou_o will_v look_v either_o to_o preeminencie_n of_o person_n or_o greatness_n of_o sin_n for_o the_o person_n they_o be_v a_o natural_a olive_n as_o be_v apparent_a thy_o sin_n be_v the_o great_a this_o i_o speak_v the_o rather_o because_o we_o have_v all_o shift_a heart_n deceitful_a above_o all_o thing_n which_o be_v ready_a to_o think_v that_o the_o sin_n of_o those_o who_o be_v exemplary_o punish_v be_v great_a than_o we_o be_v and_o that_o they_o have_v some_o extraordinary_a thing_n in_o they_o which_o make_v the_o lord_n extraordinary_o to_o punish_v they_o and_o so_o their_o example_n work_v not_o so_o effectual_o upon_o we_o but_o on_o the_o contrary_a you_o see_v our_o sin_n be_v clear_o great_a our_o saviour_n see_v this_o corruption_n and_o deceit_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o therefore_o he_o say_v to_o the_o jew_n think_v you_o that_o these_o upon_o who_o the_o tower_n of_o shiloh_n fall_v be_v great_a sinner_n than_o the_o like_a sin_n whereas_o with_o we_o live_v in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n when_o example_n shall_v be_v of_o less_o use_n and_o when_o the_o time_n of_o general_a punishment_n be_v at_o hand_n there_o be_v no_o reason_n that_o sinner_n shall_v be_v precise_o and_o exemplary_o punish_v but_o yet_o thou_o shall_v be_v as_o sure_o and_o as_o severe_o punish_v yea_o and_o more_o iii_o a_o three_o mean_v to_o help_v to_o humble_v we_o be_v to_o consider_v the_o greatness_n of_o god_n anger_n against_o sin_n and_o how_o odious_a sin_n be_v in_o his_o sight_n and_o presence_n we_o mercy_n for_o we_o so_o in_o the_o scripture_n we_o have_v it_o more_o than_o once_o that_o sweet_a combination_n of_o mercy_n and_o truth_n psal_n 57_o he_o will_v send_v out_o his_o mercy_n and_o his_o truth_n psal_n 25._o all_o his_o way_n be_v mercy_n and_o truth_n etc._n etc._n his_o truth_n be_v to_o perform_v his_o promise_n his_o mercy_n be_v to_o cover_v our_o sin_n and_o to_o pardon_v on_o in_o a_o cheerful_a and_o right_a course_n of_o obedience_n with_o a_o eye_n to_o god_n whereas_o otherwise_o all_o our_o obedience_n be_v at_o the_o best_a felfish_n if_o not_o slavish_a do_v you_o fast_o unto_o i_o say_v the_o lord_n and_o even_o for_o this_o restraint_n of_o fear_n to_o stand_v in_o awe_n and_o not_o to_o sin_v this_o covenant_n for_o all_o the_o sweetness_n of_o it_o have_v sufficient_a ground_n for_o as_o you_o hear_v although_o the_o lord_n for_o the_o main_n take_v not_o his_o love_a kindness_n away_o yet_o nevertheless_o he_o visit_v with_o the_o rod_n and_o with_o stripe_n even_o with_o sad_a and_o sore_a chastisement_n even_o where_o he_o be_v favourable_a he_o take_v for_o all_o that_o vengeance_n for_o transgression_n even_o where_o he_o correct_v in_o measure_n he_o suffer_v not_o altogether_o to_o pass_v unpunished_a hence_o be_v that_o complaint_n thou_o have_v wound_v i_o with_o the_o wound_n of_o a_o enemy_n and_o chastise_v i_o with_o the_o chastisement_n of_o a_o cruel_a one_o and_o again_o the_o lord_n have_v chastise_v i_o sore_o but_o have_v not_o deliver_v i_o over_o to_o death_n there_o be_v never_o so_o much_o pleasure_n in_o thy_o sin_v as_o thou_o who_o ever_o thou_o be_v shall_v find_v bitterness_n in_o thy_o chastisement_n for_o sin_n even_o although_o the_o main_a thing_n and_o the_o punishment_n be_v remit_v so_o that_o thou_o have_v need_v to_o stand_v in_o awe_n and_o not_o sin_n so_o that_o this_o covenant_n though_o full_a of_o confidence_n yet_o have_v some_o place_n also_o for_o fear_n and_o awe_n obj._n when_o i_o consider_v this_o sureness_n and_o everlastingness_n of_o the_o covenant_n sure_o i_o must_v think_v they_o happy_a that_o have_v propriety_n and_o interest_n in_o it_o but_o i_o fear_v that_o i_o have_v none_o that_o it_o belong_v not_o
