etc._n etc._n it_o be_v a_o honour_n to_o christ_n that_o his_o servant_n shall_v be_v holy_a as_o he_o be_v holy_a it_o be_v for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o he_o require_v it_o the_o apostle_n james_n press_v it_o chap._n 2.8_o to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o chapter_n if_o you_o fulfil_v the_o royal_a law_n according_a to_o the_o scripture_n thou_o shall_v love_v thy_o neighbour_n as_o thyself_o you_o do_v well_o and_o again_o whosoever_o shall_v keep_v the_o whole_a law_n and_o yet_o offend_v in_o one_o point_n he_o be_v guilty_a of_o all_o thus_o we_o see_v the_o apostle_n of_o unto_o his_o servant_n enable_v they_o to_o keep_v it_o jer._n 31.33_o and_o ezek._n 36.27_o now_o this_o law_n will_v he_o not_o write_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n nor_o give_v unto_o they_o his_o holy_a spirit_n enable_v they_o to_o keep_v it_o be_v it_o not_o his_o will_n in_o jesus_n christ_n that_o the_o law_n shall_v be_v the_o rule_n of_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n unto_o his_o people_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o child_n of_o god_n though_o they_o be_v not_o under_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o law_n yet_o take_v themselves_o to_o be_v bind_v to_o the_o obedience_n of_o it_o for_o if_o christ_n have_v give_v the_o law_n as_o well_o as_o moses_n and_o if_o he_o have_v ratify_v it_o by_o give_v they_o his_o spirit_n to_o teach_v and_o strengthen_v they_o to_o keep_v it_o though_o not_o perfect_o yet_o sincere_o than_o they_o take_v themselves_o bind_v to_o obey_v the_o law_n though_o they_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n for_o do_v we_o make_v void_a the_o law_n through_o faith_n god_n forbid_v yea_o we_o establish_v the_o law_n for_o what_o need_n have_v christian_n of_o free_a justification_n by_o christ_n if_o they_o be_v not_o bind_v unto_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o law_n by_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o the_o free_a justification_n of_o man_n under_o a_o free_a covenant_n of_o grace_n do_v establish_v the_o obedience_n of_o the_o law_n otherwise_o what_o need_v they_o run_v to_o christ_n to_o save_v they_o from_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n why_o do_v we_o still_o run_v to_o christ_n for_o the_o continuance_n of_o our_o justification_n but_o that_o we_o find_v ourselves_o ungodly_a creature_n against_o the_o righteous_a and_o holy_a law_n of_o god_n therefore_o if_o god_n have_v give_v man_n the_o law_n &_o his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o strengthen_v they_o in_o the_o obedience_n of_o it_o and_o his_o grace_n to_o save_v they_o from_o the_o curse_n of_o it_o than_o christian_n be_v to_o know_v that_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o keep_v the_o law_n they_o lie_v under_o the_o authority_n of_o it_o and_o dare_v not_o pluck_v their_o neck_n from_o under_o that_o yoke_n now_o there_o be_v divers_a effect_n spring_v from_o the_o subjection_n of_o god_n people_n to_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n 1_o as_o they_o take_v themselves_o bind_v to_o the_o obedience_n of_o it_o so_o they_o believe_v and_o many_o time_n feel_v the_o fatherly_a displeasure_n of_o god_n when_o they_o transgress_v it_o now_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n can_v not_o bring_v they_o under_o the_o displeasure_n of_o god_n unless_o they_o be_v bind_v unto_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n this_o displeasure_n david_n be_v sensible_a of_o psal_n 38.1,2,3_o etc._n etc._n where_o he_o make_v many_o complaint_n which_o do_v all_o of_o they_o spring_n from_o the_o conscience_n of_o the_o disobedience_n of_o the_o law_n which_o god_n have_v frame_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o servant_n whereby_o they_o reflect_v upon_o their_o sin_n as_o the_o ground_n of_o all_o the_o distemper_n which_o lie_v upon_o their_o body_n or_o mind_n this_o be_v the_o first_o effect_n of_o the_o subjection_n of_o god_n people_n to_o his_o law_n they_o lie_v under_o the_o faith_n and_o sense_n of_o the_o danger_n of_o the_o disobedience_n of_o it_o 2_o they_o be_v under_o the_o faith_n and_o sense_n also_o of_o god_n gracious_a acceptance_n of_o their_o way_n when_o they_o be_v suitable_a to_o the_o bless_a direction_n of_o his_o word_n not_o that_o they_o can_v raise_v therefrom_o their_o justify_v estate_n but_o by_o the_o same_o spirit_n of_o god_n whereby_o they_o be_v help_v to_o obey_v the_o commandment_n of_o god_n they_o do_v see_v the_o lord_n gracious_a approbation_n of_o they_o in_o their_o poor_a and_o weak_a endeavour_n for_o the_o lord_n know_v the_o way_n of_o the_o righteous_a that_o be_v acknowledge_v and_o approve_v it_o psal_n 1.6_o when_o the_o lord_n by_o his_o spirit_n bow_v the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n unto_o obedience_n than_o he_o know_v and_o accept_v their_o obedience_n gen._n 22.12_o thus_o the_o lord_n bear_v witness_v unto_o his_o servant_n that_o he_o do_v accept_v their_o work_n so_o that_o they_o sensible_o know_v and_o believe_v that_o the_o lord_n do_v acknowledge_v their_o poor_a and_o weak_a endeavour_n unto_o which_o they_o be_v carry_v forth_o by_o his_o spirit_n in_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o word_n this_o the_o prophet_n david_n confirm_v psal_n 18.20_o to_o 26._o where_o he_o speak_v of_o his_o righteous_a deal_n with_o saul_n and_o whereas_o his_o enemy_n lay_v it_o to_o his_o charge_n that_o he_o be_v a_o enemy_n unto_o saul_n the_o lord_n bear_v he_o witness_v that_o he_o have_v walk_v towards_o saul_n with_o a_o good_a conscience_n now_o the_o lord_n have_v lead_v he_o a_o end_n to_o deal_v just_o and_o righteous_o and_o pure_o with_o saul_n have_v keep_v he_o from_o all_o the_o malice_n unto_o a_o christian_a spirit_n when_o the_o lord_n bear_v witness_v unto_o his_o soul_n that_o he_o have_v a_o eye_n to_o all_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n and_o all_o this_o argue_v that_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n in_o jesus_n christ_n have_v look_v at_o themselves_o as_o bind_v by_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n and_o as_o be_v under_o the_o law_n to_o christ_n who_o have_v give_v the_o law_n and_o power_n unto_o his_o servant_n sincere_o to_o keep_v it_o both_o by_o write_v in_o their_o heart_n a_o law_n of_o obedience_n and_o by_o put_v his_o holy_a spirit_n within_o they_o for_o if_o the_o people_n of_o god_n be_v not_o sensible_a of_o their_o bind_a duty_n to_o the_o observation_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n they_o will_v neither_o have_v faith_n nor_o sense_n of_o god_n fatherly_a displeasure_n when_o they_o negligent_o break_v these_o law_n neither_o will_v they_o be_v sensible_a of_o god_n acceptance_n of_o their_o conformity_n thereunto_o but_o we_o know_v what_o the_o apostle_n say_v 2_o cor._n 1.12_o for_o our_o rejoice_v be_v this_o the_o testimony_n of_o our_o conscience_n etc._n etc._n and_o true_o the_o lord_n do_v often_o bear_v witness_n unto_o the_o integrity_n of_o his_o servant_n against_o the_o opposition_n of_o man_n so_o he_o do_v to_o abraham_n to_o david_n to_o paul_n and_o to_o sundry_a of_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n though_o they_o be_v not_o wont_a to_o build_v their_o safe_a estate_n thereupon_o yet_o this_o kind_n of_o god_n acceptance_n of_o their_o way_n and_o obedience_n they_o do_v discern_v etc._n etc._n yet_o in_o their_o best_a obedience_n which_o they_o do_v perform_v they_o see_v the_o need_n they_o have_v to_o go_v unto_o god_n for_o justify_v grace_n because_o if_o they_o have_v fail_v in_o
not_o therefore_o upon_o every_o lean_v of_o your_o soul_n upon_o conditional_a promise_n for_o so_o you_o may_v build_v upon_o a_o covenant_n make_v upon_o a_o work_n and_o so_o you_o and_o your_o covenant_n may_v fail_v together_o but_o when_o you_o read_v how_o the_o lord_n have_v make_v such_o promise_n to_o such_o and_o such_o qualification_n then_o consider_v that_o those_o thing_n be_v indeed_o requisite_a to_o be_v find_v in_o you_o but_o who_o be_v there_o in_o heaven_n or_o earth_n that_o can_v work_v they_o in_o you_o there_o be_v none_o but_o jesus_n christ_n and_o unless_o you_o have_v he_o to_o be_v in_o you_o you_o can_v have_v any_o of_o these_o thing_n wrought_v in_o you_o but_o will_v a_o poor_a soul_n say_v i_o be_o not_o able_a to_o reach_v the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n therefore_o all_o the_o promise_n do_v fall_v heavy_a upon_o a_o man_n and_o he_o see_v that_o they_o be_v too_o burdensome_a and_o too_o weighty_a for_o he_o he_o do_v not_o say_v here_o be_v the_o qualification_n and_o here_o be_v the_o blessing_n promise_v to_o it_o and_o therefore_o i_o will_v take_v it_o to_o myself_o but_o one_o that_o be_v teach_v of_o god_n do_v forthwith_o go_v and_o pray_v unto_o god_n that_o he_o will_v set_v he_o in_o the_o way_n of_o those_o blessing_n and_o that_o so_o he_o will_v make_v he_o partaker_n of_o they_o he_o pray_v that_o god_n will_v give_v he_o his_o son_n and_o that_o he_o will_v adorn_v he_o with_o his_o grace_n as_o a_o bride_n of_o jesus_n christ_n thus_o while_o the_o soul_n do_v look_v towards_o jesus_n christ_n and_o grace_n in_o he_o the_o lord_n do_v secret_o transform_v he_o into_o the_o image_n of_o christ_n by_o work_v such_o qualification_n in_o he_o and_o then_o bear_v witness_n to_o that_o sanctification_n which_o be_v wrought_v in_o his_o heart_n thereby_o enlarge_a his_o soul_n with_o strong_a consolation_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o in_o the_o same_o way_n it_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n do_v strengthen_v the_o faith_n of_o his_o people_n to_o believe_v that_o all_o those_o thing_n which_o god_n have_v promise_v be_v accomplish_v in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o law_n fullfil_v in_o i_o so_o far_o as_o christ_n be_v in_o i_o and_o therefore_o i_o come_v unto_o god_n in_o prayer_n to_o make_v good_a those_o promise_n unto_o i_o in_o a_o right_a way_n which_o will_v have_v be_v preposterous_o apply_v before_o christ_n be_v give_v and_o this_o may_v serve_v for_o answer_n to_o the_o 5_o question_n quest_n 6._o we_o come_v now_o unto_o a_o sixth_o question_n if_o the_o lord_n do_v give_v himself_o first_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o his_o grace_n this_o may_v then_o be_v a_o doubt_n and_o a_o question_n in_o a_o christian_a soul_n if_o god_n give_v himself_o before_o any_o blessing_n before_o any_o promise_n in_o order_n of_o nature_n though_o he_o give_v himself_o always_o in_o a_o promise_n if_o we_o can_v claim_v any_o blessing_n from_o god_n at_o the_o first_o in_o any_o conditional_a promise_n therefore_o not_o by_o any_o condition_n in_o ourselves_o but_o as_o we_o receive_v all_o thing_n from_o god_n so_o we_o claim_v all_o thing_n from_o he_o in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o so_o do_v first_o seek_v for_o he_o and_o for_o all_o thing_n in_o he_o if_o thus_o to_o what_o use_n then_o serve_v the_o law_n of_o god_n which_o require_v such_o and_o such_o condition_n in_o we_o do_v we_o not_o abrogate_v the_o law_n &_o make_v it_o of_o none_o effect_n and_o root_v it_o out_o from_o have_v any_o power_n over_o christian_n and_o true_o some_o under_o pretence_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n have_v think_v it_o altogether_o bootless_a to_o bind_v christian_n unto_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o to_o look_v at_o it_o as_o any_o part_n of_o the_o direction_n of_o their_o course_n now_o because_o this_o be_v a_o imputation_n usual_o reflect_v upon_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n let_v we_o confider_v therefore_o and_o inquire_v to_o what_o use_n serve_v the_o law_n of_o god_n if_o god_n give_v himself_o first_o unto_o his_o people_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o his_o grace_n answ_n though_o the_o lord_n give_v himself_o free_o to_o the_o soul_n and_o his_o son_n and_o all_o the_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n without_o respect_n unto_o any_o work_n of_o the_o law_n yet_o the_o law_n be_v of_o special_a and_o notable_a use_n unto_o all_o the_o son_n of_o man_n both_o unto_o they_o that_o be_v not_o yet_o bring_v home_o unto_o god_n by_o convert_v grace_n and_o also_o to_o those_o that_o be_v regenerate_v in_o jesus_n christ_n the_o apostle_n paul_n do_v observe_v that_o the_o question_n will_v arise_v upon_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n gal._n 3.16,17,18_o for_o if_o the_o blessing_n of_o abraham_n come_v upon_o the_o people_n of_o god_n by_o jesus_n christ_n to_o what_o end_n then_o serve_v the_o law_n which_o come_v 430_o year_n after_o it_o can_v disannul_v grace_n to_o make_v the_o promise_n of_o god_n of_o none_o effect_v to_o what_o end_n then_o serve_v it_o some_o say_v it_o be_v of_o no_o use_n other_o say_v that_o it_o be_v of_o such_o use_n that_o they_o have_v rather_o renounce_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n than_o it_o but_o the_o answer_n be_v it_o be_v of_o especial_a use_n both_o unto_o spiritual_a and_o carnal_a man_n first_o unto_o carnal_a man_n and_o they_o be_v of_o two_o sort_n some_o belong_v unto_o the_o election_n of_o grace_n though_o they_o be_v not_o yet_o call_v other_o be_v not_o write_v in_o the_o lamb_n book_n of_o life_n but_o will_v in_o the_o end_n final_o perish_v and_o the_o law_n be_v yet_o of_o use_n unto_o both_o sort_n of_o they_o for_o the_o elect_n it_o be_v of_o use_n unto_o they_o to_o aggravate_v their_o sin_n and_o to_o multiply_v it_o unto_o they_o as_o it_o be_v that_o be_v to_o say_v to_o aggravate_v the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o heinousness_n of_o sin_n upon_o their_o conscience_n and_o to_o set_v home_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n unto_o their_o soul_n thereby_o to_o drive_v they_o to_o feel_v their_o great_a need_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n who_o otherwise_o they_o shall_v for_o ever_o have_v despise_v thus_o the_o apostle_n answer_v in_o the_o place_n aforenamed_a the_o law_n be_v add_v because_o of_o transgression_n that_o they_o may_v clear_o appear_v and_o be_v aggravate_v thereby_o that_o a_o man_n may_v plain_o discern_v how_o he_o have_v make_v himself_o liable_a to_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n by_o so_o manifold_a breach_n of_o so_o many_o commandment_n in_o one_o kind_a or_o other_o the_o law_n give_v clear_a knowledge_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o much_o the_o more_o do_v it_o set_v on_o the_o weight_n of_o it_o upon_o the_o conscience_n work_v fear_n in_o the_o heart_n rom._n 8.15_o and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o gal._n 3.24_o the_o law_n be_v our_o schoolmaster_n to_o christ_n as_o a_o schoolmaster_n drive_v his_o scholar_n through_o fear_n unto_o this_o or_o that_o duty_n either_o to_o do_v it_o himself_o or_o if_o he_o can_v to_o get_v other_o to_o do_v it_o for_o he_o so_o the_o law_n of_o god_n drive_v the_o soul_n through_o fear_n unto_o jesus_n christ_n not_o that_o it_o do_v reveal_v christ_n a_o saviour_n of_o freegrace_n but_o the_o soul_n be_v once_o bring_v down_o under_o sense_n of_o sin_n by_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n will_v ready_o &_o willing_o hearken_v unto_o the_o news_n of_o christ_n a_o saviour_n for_o be_v once_o make_v sensible_a of_o his_o own_o inability_n to_o redeem_v himself_o and_o unworthines_n to_o be_v redeem_v from_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n now_o be_v the_o soul_n fit_v to_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o gospel_n now_o be_v the_o news_n of_o christ_n beautiful_a and_o glad_a tiding_n and_o of_o this_o use_n be_v the_o law_n unto_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n before_o they_o come_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n 2._o but_o of_o what_o use_n be_v the_o law_n unto_o other_o man_n first_o the_o disobedience_n of_o it_o be_v of_o use_n second_o the_o obedience_n of_o it_o 1._o the_o disobedience_n for_o if_o man_n have_v not_o know_v sin_n it_o have_v be_v some_o pretence_n though_o they_o have_v commit_v sin_n but_o when_o man_n have_v the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o law_n and_o yet_o commit_v sin_n willing_o now_o they_o have_v no_o cloak_n for_o their_o sin_n rom._n 1.21_o compare_v with_o 32._o where_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o the_o great_a sin_n of_o the_o gentile_n and_o much_o more_o of_o the_o jew_n who_o though_o they_o know_v god_n and_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n and_o that_o they_o which_o commit_v such_o wickedness_n be_v worthy_a of_o death_n yet_o

that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o save_v himself_o these_o be_v such_o as_o justify_v themselves_o before_o man_n to_o who_o our_o saviour_n speak_v luke_n 16.15_o and_o of_o who_o he_o say_v that_o publican_n and_o harlot_n shall_v go_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n before_o they_o mat._n 21.31,32_o for_o many_o time_n you_o shall_v have_v the_o most_o deboist_a and_o profane_a more_o humble_v and_o ready_a to_o hearken_v to_o the_o voice_n of_o christ_n and_o soon_o convince_v of_o the_o necessity_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n than_o those_o that_o be_v moral_o righteous_a speak_v of_o isa_n 4.4_o that_o the_o lord_n will_v purge_v away_o the_o filth_n of_o the_o daughter_n of_o zion_n with_o a_o spirit_n of_o judgement_n and_o of_o burn_v the_o one_o be_v a_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n and_o the_o other_o be_v a_o consume_a fire_n which_o forcee_v they_o not_o to_o build_v any_o comfort_n upon_o any_o work_n that_o they_o have_v do_v this_o may_v hypocrite_n reach_v unto_o in_o their_o judgement_n so_o as_o that_o they_o may_v be_v convince_v that_o they_o have_v neither_o root_n within_o they_o nor_o branch_n grow_v upon_o they_o and_o yet_o in_o the_o mean_a while_o they_o may_v not_o come_v unto_o a_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n but_o hereby_o also_o the_o lord_n use_v to_o prepare_v his_o people_n some_o bless_v themselves_o in_o worldly_a course_n and_o never_o come_v unto_o a_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n some_o do_v find_v comfort_n in_o their_o performance_n and_o never_o see_v the_o vanity_n of_o their_o own_o righteousness_n but_o there_o be_v those_o who_o the_o lord_n do_v carry_v further_o unto_o a_o spirit_n of_o burn_a even_o unto_o a_o sensible_a feel_n of_o god_n wrath_n burn_v against_o whatsoever_o be_v as_o stubble_n &_o such_o be_v a_o man_n own_o gift_n and_o part_n and_o worth_a so_o that_o now_o the_o poor_a soul_n find_v that_o he_o have_v no_o root_n of_o any_o good_a covenant_n but_o see_v it_o to_o be_v a_o outward_a face_n of_o the_o covenant_n that_o he_o do_v rest_n upon_o and_o now_o he_o see_v no_o green_a branch_n of_o righteousness_n remain_v but_o all_o be_v blast_v and_o break_v in_o piece_n according_a to_o what_o the_o prophet_n esay_n say_v chap._n 40.6,7_o and_o so_o the_o lord_n come_v to_o leave_v a_o man_n neither_o root_n nor_o branch_n for_o by_o a_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n the_o lord_n blast_v all_o flesh_n but_o when_o it_o come_v unto_o the_o goodliness_n of_o flesh_n that_o be_v consume_v by_o a_o spirit_n of_o burn_a 2_o as_o god_n thus_o prepare_v we_o for_o himself_o so_o he_o do_v give_v himself_o unto_o we_o and_o take_v possession_n of_o we_o by_o his_o bless_a spirit_n the_o father_n give_v himself_o and_o his_o son_n by_o his_o bless_a spirit_n for_o the_o spirit_n any_o one_o circumstance_n their_o best_a righteousness_n be_v pollute_v therefore_o they_o have_v need_n of_o jesus_n christ_n to_o cover_v the_o fail_n of_o their_o most_o strict_a performance_n this_o nehemiah_n be_v sensible_a of_o when_o he_o have_v be_v very_o faithful_a in_o reform_v the_o abuse_n of_o the_o sabbath_n and_o of_o many_o other_o ordinance_n of_o god_n and_o though_o the_o lord_n have_v help_v he_o to_o undertake_v the_o reformation_n with_o much_o dexterity_n and_o success_n yet_o for_o all_o this_o he_o run_v unto_o christ_n for_o acceptance_n and_o pardon_n nehem._n 13.22_o and_o what_o will_v he_o have_v do_v if_o he_o have_v be_v conscious_a of_o some_o gross_a sin_n he_o will_v then_o much_o more_o have_v run_v to_o the_o lord_n jesus_n thus_o the_o law_n be_v establish_v by_o faith_n for_o there_o be_v no_o justify_v person_n but_o be_v very_o apprehensive_a of_o his_o sin_n and_o so_o of_o his_o continual_a need_n of_o christ_n who_o blood_n cleanse_v under_o he_o but_o how_o be_v a_o christian_n not_o under_o the_o law_n so_o far_o forth_o as_o the_o law_n be_v not_o under_o christ_n i_o mean_v so_o far_o as_o it_o be_v without_o christ_n free_o justify_v we_o by_o his_o grace_n so_o far_o a_o christian_n be_v free_v from_o under_o the_o law_n in_o one_o word_n a_o christian_a man_n under_o a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n be_v not_o under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n rom._n 6.14_o you_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o grace_n he_o mean_v not_o under_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o law_n nor_o under_o the_o power_n and_o authority_n of_o the_o law_n as_o of_o their_o husband_n rom._n 7.1,2,3,4_o the_o husbandly_a jurisdiction_n of_o the_o law_n be_v take_v away_o the_o law_n be_v not_o make_v for_o a_o righteous_a disobedient_a to_o the_o ungodly_a and_o sinner_n etc._n etc._n 1_o tim._n 1.9_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o law_n be_v give_v to_o such_o and_o to_o none_o but_o such_o to_o convince_v they_o of_o their_o sin_n against_o the_o law_n to_o humble_v they_o to_o the_o death_n and_o to_o drive_v they_o out_o of_o themselves_o and_o all_o confidence_n in_o themselves_o but_o how_o do_v it_o appear_v that_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o law_n be_v not_o give_v to_o the_o child_n of_o god_n from_o hence_o it_o be_v manifest_a because_o a_o christian_a man_n neither_o look_v for_o justification_n and_o silvation_n from_o his_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n nor_o sear_v condemnation_n though_o he_o fail_v in_o his_o obedience_n and_o this_o be_v a_o fruit_n of_o his_o exemption_n from_o under_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o law_n for_o if_o a_o man_n shall_v look_v for_o life_n by_o his_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n and_o fear_v condemnation_n by_o the_o breach_n of_o it_o this_o will_v bring_v a_o man_n under_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o law_n for_o the_o sanction_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o law_n be_v life_n to_o they_o that_o obey_v and_o to_o they_o that_o disobey_v death_n and_o the_o curse_n but_o a_o christian_a look_v not_o for_o life_n by_o his_o obedience_n and_o that_o be_v plain_a psal_n 143.2_o rom._n 3.20_o therefore_o no_o hope_n of_o salvation_n from_o our_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n but_o i_o think_v you_o will_v say_v a_o christian_a may_v fear_v his_o condemnation_n because_o of_o his_o disobedience_n to_o the_o law_n true_o this_o be_v a_o great_a snare_n and_o this_o doctrine_n will_v be_v scandalous_a to_o many_o a_o poor_a soul_n but_o without_o cause_n indeed_o if_o god_n give_v a_o man_n to_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o not_o to_o see_v it_o than_o he_o may_v fear_v but_o if_o a_o man_n know_v himself_o to_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n than_o he_o do_v not_o fear_v condemnation_n from_o his_o disobedience_n notable_a to_o this_o purpose_n be_v the_o confidence_n of_o david_n psal_n 49.5_o where_o the_o prophet_n call_v upon_o all_o people_n in_o the_o world_n to_o take_v notice_n of_o it_o both_o man_n of_o high_a and_o low_a degree_n wherefore_o shall_v i_o fear_v in_o the_o day_n of_o evil_a when_o the_o iniquity_n of_o my_o heel_n shall_v compass_v i_o about_o wherefore_o true_o if_o there_o be_v any_o fear_n in_o the_o world_n one_o will_v think_v this_o shall_v procure_v it_o what_o shall_v a_o man_n fear_v if_o not_o this_o david_n yet_o profess_v it_o and_o will_v jesus_n christ_n this_o melt_v he_o more_o than_o all_o his_o other_o sin_n especial_o consider_v the_o abound_a grace_n of_o god_n which_o where_o sin_n have_v abound_v abound_v much_o more_o thus_o when_o a_o man_n do_v not_o look_v for_o life_n by_o his_o own_o righteousness_n but_o know_v the_o redemption_n of_o soul_n to_o be_v more_o precious_a than_o so_o this_o show_v a_o man_n not_o to_o worldly_a confidence_n and_o the_o confidence_n of_o christian_n all_o the_o glory_n of_o worldly_a man_n will_v leave_v they_o to_o be_v like_o the_o beast_n that_o perish_v and_o can_v redeem_v their_o soul_n that_o the_o lord_n only_o may_v be_v exalt_v in_o his_o redeem_a 2_o as_o a_o christian_n look_v not_o for_o salvation_n by_o his_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n nor_o fear_v condemnation_n by_o his_o disobedience_n so_o neither_o do_v he_o seek_v for_o any_o blessing_n from_o his_o obedience_n nor_o fear_v any_o curse_n from_o his_o disobedience_n and_o therefore_o if_o there_o be_v any_o promise_n of_o blessing_n make_v to_o any_o obedience_n though_o god_n shall_v help_v he_o to_o as_o much_o obedience_n as_o may_v be_v he_o do_v not_o look_v for_o any_o blessing_n from_o that_o obedience_n
there_o be_v two_o thing_n in_o the_o root_n 1._o the_o first_o be_v the_o root_n of_o abraham_n covenant_n which_o this_o people_n much_o trust_v upon_o and_o that_o be_v it_o of_o which_o john_n baptist_n speak_v now_o the_o axe_n be_v lay_v to_o the_o root_n of_o the_o tree_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o he_o speak_v mat._n 3.9_o after_o he_o have_v say_v think_v not_o to_o say_v within_o your_o yourselves_o we_o have_v abraham_n to_o our_o father_n vers_n 8._o so_o that_o all_o the_o confidence_n that_o they_o have_v in_o abraham_n covenant_n and_o temple_n and_o tabernacle_n and_o such_o thing_n be_v burn_v up_o and_o so_o they_o have_v no_o root_n leave_v they_o to_o stand_v upon_o and_o this_o be_v one_o thing_n intend_v by_o the_o root_n but_o 2._o second_o there_o be_v something_o more_o in_o it_o for_o with_o this_o spirit_n of_o burn_a the_o lord_n by_o the_o power_n of_o this_o spirit_n do_v cut_v we_o off_o from_o any_o power_n of_o our_o own_o natural_a gift_n and_o part_n and_o spiritual_a gift_n also_o whereby_o we_o think_v to_o lay_v hold_n on_o jesus_n christ_n and_o we_o be_v cut_v off_o hereby_o from_o all_o the_o confidence_n that_o we_o have_v in_o our_o own_o sufficiency_n when_o once_o the_o lord_n intend_v to_o bring_v a_o soul_n unto_o himself_o for_o there_o be_v a_o usual_a preâ—idence_n that_o we_o have_v in_o our_o own_o state_n though_o the_o lord_n have_v cut_v we_o off_o from_o hope_n in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o our_o parent_n and_o from_o boast_v of_o his_o ordinance_n yet_o we_o think_v there_o be_v some_o power_n still_o leave_v we_o and_o therefore_o we_o hope_v and_o will_v seek_v in_o our_o own_o strength_n that_o the_o lord_n may_v reveal_v himself_o to_o we_o in_o mercy_n and_o peace_n but_o when_o the_o lord_n come_v near_a unto_o we_o he_o will_v show_v we_o how_o unable_a we_o be_v to_o take_v up_o the_o least_o good_a resolution_n we_o shall_v find_v ourselves_o like_o bruise_a reed_n unable_a to_o hold_v up_o our_o head_n for_o christ_n come_v to_o seek_v and_o to_o save_v that_o which_o be_v lose_v so_o that_o christ_n will_v not_o declare_v himself_o to_o seek_v we_o until_o we_o be_v lose_v and_o therefore_o he_o say_v math._n 16.24_o if_o any_o man_n will_v come_v after_o i_o let_v he_o deny_v himself_o and_o follow_v i_o and_o according_a hereunto_o it_o be_v that_o those_o convert_n consume_v that_o now_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o think_v as_o of_o ourselves_o a_o good_a thought_n and_o again_o the_o lord_n by_o this_o spirit_n of_o burn_a do_v burn_v up_o all_o our_o branch_n also_o how_o fair_a and_o green_a soever_o they_o have_v be_v all_o our_o fasting_n and_o humiliation_n and_o almsdeed_n and_o prayer_n such_o thing_n as_o the_o pharisee_n much_o boast_a in_o math._n 6.1,2,3_o etc._n etc._n but_o these_o thing_n be_v all_o burn_v up_o the_o fruit_n of_o bondage_n work_v unto_o fear_n and_o now_o all_o the_o hope_n be_v that_o a_o man_n set_v upon_o reformation_n but_o if_o the_o lord_n love_v a_o man_n soul_n he_o will_v not_o let_v he_o stay_v there_o but_o go_v further_a with_o he_o and_o show_v he_o that_o his_o prayer_n and_o fasting_n be_v all_o empty_a and_o fall_v short_a of_o the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o jesus_n christ_n but_o yet_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o quite_o out_o of_o hope_n though_o the_o law_n can_v save_v i_o if_o it_o can_v i_o must_v get_v i_o unto_o jesus_n christ_n and_o lie_v hold_v upon_o he_o for_o salvation_n as_o if_o all_o be_v to_o be_v have_v by_o faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n if_o once_o we_o can_v lay_v hold_n upon_o he_o and_o nothing_o else_o be_v require_v but_o faith_n in_o christ_n and_o thereby_o my_o lay_n hold_v upon_o he_o i_o see_v plain_o say_v a_o man_n in_o this_o case_n that_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n in_o i_o as_o have_v be_v right_o observe_v and_o therefore_o i_o will_v trust_v upon_o jesus_n christ_n and_o give_v up_o myself_o to_o he_o but_o now_o if_o the_o lord_n love_v thy_o soul_n he_o will_v not_o suffer_v thou_o there_o to_o rest_n he_o will_v not_o leave_v thou_o so_o he_o will_v press_v thou_o further_o how_o come_v thou_o by_o faith_n in_o christ_n why_o thou_o take_v it_o up_o of_o thy_o own_o accord_n thou_o think_v all_o thy_o gift_n aâ—d_v duty_n be_v in_o vain_a and_o therefore_o now_o thou_o will_v believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n be_v it_o so_o easy_a one_o that_o say_v lord_n lord_n shall_v enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n now_o i_o see_v it_o be_v not_o my_o faith_n such_o a_o faith_n as_o i_o be_v that_o will_v reach_v jesus_n christ_n it_o be_v not_o a_o faith_n of_o my_o own_o undertake_n that_o will_v serve_v the_o turn_n i_o see_v now_o christ_n alone_o must_v work_v this_o great_a work_n in_o i_o and_o christ_n in_o the_o way_n of_o his_o own_o ordinance_n therefore_o i_o must_v look_v for_o it_o in_o his_o word_n and_o in_o the_o fellowship_n of_o the_o sacrament_n therefore_o i_o will_v look_v up_o unto_o the_o lord_n in_o all_o these_o and_o wait_v for_o he_o and_o seek_v he_o therein_o and_o i_o hope_v i_o can_v seek_v and_o wait_v in_o that_o way_n though_o i_o can_v do_v nothing_o else_o and_o so_o the_o poor_a soul_n make_v account_n that_o in_o time_n he_o shall_v find_v christ_n in_o the_o ordinance_n and_o so_o hammer_v out_o a_o faith_n from_o thence_o and_o therein_o bless_v himself_o now_o mind_n you_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n when_o the_o lord_n god_n the_o father_n will_v draw_v home_o the_o soul_n thorough_o to_o jesus_n christ_n will_v burn_v up_o all_o thy_o confidence_n for_o if_o thy_o soul_n be_v not_o utter_o lose_v so_o long_o as_o it_o have_v any_o root_n or_o power_n in_o itself_o it_o be_v not_o come_v to_o a_o utter_a selfe-deniall_n though_o i_o can_v work_v i_o will_v believe_v and_o if_o i_o can_v believe_v i_o can_v wait_v that_o i_o may_v believe_v and_o so_o here_o be_v still_o the_o old_a root_n of_o adam_n leave_v alive_a in_o we_o whereby_o man_n seek_v to_o establish_v their_o own_o righteousness_n this_o old_a root_n put_v forth_o itself_o and_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o soul_n to_o be_v whole_o from_o christ_n and_o for_o christ_n alone_o and_o all_o because_o there_o be_v a_o sprig_n of_o adam_n leave_v in_o the_o soul_n whence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v marvellous_o apt_a to_o have_v hope_n and_o confidence_n more_o or_o less_o from_o some_o virtue_n or_o power_n in_o himself_o therefore_o it_o be_v no_o small_a matter_n to_o be_v cut_v off_o from_o adam_n that_o be_v contrary_a to_o nature_n as_o say_v the_o apostle_n rom._n 11.24_o this_o be_v a_o marvellous_a strong_a work_n when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n come_v to_o act_v thing_n contrary_a to_o nature_n for_o nature_n be_v full_o possess_v that_o what_o god_n command_v i_o be_o able_a to_o do_v it_o nature_n will_v not_o be_v persuade_v to_o the_o contrary_a if_o i_o hear_v god_n command_v any_o thing_n i_o will_v do_v it_o say_v a_o carnal_a heart_n and_o if_o i_o can_v do_v it_o i_o will_v believe_v and_o if_o i_o can_v believe_v i_o will_v wait_v and_o i_o can_v wait_v that_o i_o may_v believe_v this_o be_v still_o but_o nature_n now_o when_o the_o lord_n come_v indeed_o
duty_n as_o prayer_n or_o conference_n or_o the_o like_a for_o i_o will_v not_o limit_v the_o holy_a one_o of_o israel_n yet_o usual_o it_o be_v do_v in_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o though_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o limit_v himself_o yet_o he_o do_v limit_v we_o to_o attend_v upon_o the_o mean_n which_o he_o usual_o work_v by_o but_o whatsoever_o the_o way_n be_v this_o be_v the_o
