VII 1 Elisha prophesieth incredible plenty in Samaria 2 Four lepers venturing on the host of the Syrians bring tidings of their flight 12 The king finding by spies the news to be true spoileth the tents of the Syrians 17 The lord who would not beleeve the prophesie of plenty having the charge of the gate is troden to death in the preaâ— THea Elisha said Hear ye the word of the LORD Thus saith the LORD To morrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel and two measures of barley for a shekel in the gate of Samaria 2 Then †Heb. a â—oâ—d which belonged to the king â—â—â—niâ—â— upon his hand a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man oâ— God and saâ—d Behold if the LORD would make windows in heaven might this thing be And he said Behold thou shalt see it with thine eyes but shalt not eat thereof 3 ¶ And there were four leprous men at the entring in of the gate and they said one to another Why sit we here until we die 4 If we say We will enter into the city then the famine is in the city and we shall die there and if we sit still here we die also Now therefore come and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians if they save us alive we shall live and if they kill us we shall but die 5 And they roâ—e up in the twilight to go unto the camp of the Syrians and when they were come to the uttermost part of the camp of Syria behold there was no man there 6 For the LORD had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots and a â—â—ise of horses even the noise of a great host and they said one to another Lo the king of Israel hath hired against us thy kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians to come upon us 7 Wherefore they arose and fled in the twilight and left their tents and their horses and their asses even the camp as it was and fled for their life 8 And when these lepers came to the uttermost part of the camp they went into one tent and did eat and drink and carried thence silver and gold and raiment and went and hid it and came again and entred into another tent and carried thence also and went and hid it 9 Then they said one to another We do not well this day is a day of good tidings and we hold our peace if we tarry till the morning light †Heb. we shalt finâ—â— punishment some mischief will come upon us now therefore come that we may go and tell the kings houshold 10 So they came and called unto the porter of the city and they told them saying We came to the camp or the Syrians and behold there was no man there neither voice of man but horses tied and asses tied and the tents as they were 11 And he called the Porters and they told it to the kings house within 12 ¶ And the king arose in the night and said unto his servants I will now shew you what the Syrians have done to us they know that we be hungry therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field saying When they come out of the city we shall catch them alive and get into the city 13 And one of his servants answered and said Let some take I pray thee five of the horses that remain which are left †Heb. in it in the city behold they are as all the multitude of Israel that are left in it behold I say they are even as all the multitude of the Israelites that are consumed and let us send and see 14 They took therefore two chariot-horses and the king sent after the host of the Syrians saying Go and see 15 And they went after them unto â—ordan and lo all the way was full of garments and vessels which the Syrians had cast away in their haste and the messengers returned and told the king 16 And the people went out and spoiled the tents of the Syrians So a measure of fine flour was sold for a shekel and two measures of barley for a shekel according to the word of the LORD 17 ¶ And the king appointed the lord on whose hand he leaned to have the charge of the gate and the people trod upon him in the gate and he died as the man of God had said who spake when the king came down to him 18 And it came to pass as the man of God had spoken to the king saying Two measures of barley for a shekel and a measure of fine flour for a shekel shall be to morrow about this time in the gate of Samaria 19 And that lord answered the man of God and said Now behold if the LORD should make windows in heaven might such a thing be And he said Behold thou shalt see it with thine eyes but shalt not eat thereof 20 And so it fell out unto him for the people trod upon him in the gate and he died CHAP. VIII 1 The Shâ—nammite having left her countrey seven years to avoid the forewarned famine for Elisha's miracles sake hath her land restored by the king 7 Hazael heina sent with a present by Ben-hadad to Elisha at Damascus after he had heard the prophesie killeth his master and succeedeth him 16 Jeborams wicked reign in Judah 20 Edom and Libnat revolt 22 Ahaziah succedeth Jehoram 25 Ahaziahs wicked reign 28 He visiteth Jehoram wounded at Jezreel THen spake Elisha unto the woman * Chap. 4.35 whose son he had restored to life saying Arise and go thou and thine houshold and sojourn wheresoever thou canst sojourn for the LORD hath called for a famine and it shall also come upon the land seven years 2 And the woman arose and did after the saying of the man of God and she went with her houshold and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years 3 And it came to pass at the seven years end that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines and she went forth to cry unto the king for her house and for her land 4 And the king talked with Gehazi the servant of the man of God saying Tell me I pray thee all the great things that Elisha hath done 5 And it came to pass as he was telling the king how he had restored a dead body to life that behold the woman whose son he had restored to life cried to the king for her house and for her land And Gehazi said My lord O king this is the woman and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life 6 And when the king asked the woman she told him So the king appointed unto her a certain ‖ Or â—â—nuch officer saying Restore all that was hers and all the fruits of the

VIII 1 The waters asswaye 4 The ark resteth on Ararat 7 The Raven and the Dove 15 Noah being commanded 18 goeth forth of the ark 20 He builâ—eth an altar and offereth sacrifice 21 which God accepteth and promiseth to curse the earth no more ANd God remembred Noah and every living thing and all the cattel that was with him in the ark and God made a wind to pass over the earth and the waters asswaged 2 The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped and the rain from heaven was restrained 3 And the waters returned from off the earth †Heb. in going and returning continually and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated 4 ¶ And the ark rested in the seventh moneth on the seventeenth day of the moneth upon the mountains of Ararat 5 And the waters †Heb. were in going and decreasing decreased continually until the tenth moneth in the tenth moneth on the first day of the moneth were the tops of the mountains seen 6 ¶ And it came to pass at the end of fourty days that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made 7 And he sent forth a raven which went forth †Heb. in going forth and returning to and fro until the waters were dried up from off the earth 8 Also he sent forth a dove from him to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground 9 But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot and she returned unto him into the ark for the waters were on the face of the whole earth Then he put forth his hand and took her and †Heb. caused her to come pulled her in unto him into the ark 10 And he stayed yet other seven days and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark 11 And the dove came in to him in the evening and â—o in her mouth was as olive leaf pluckt off So Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth 12 And he stayed yet other seven days and sent forth the dove which returned not again unto him any more 13 ¶ And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year in the firâ—t moneth the first day of the moneth the waters were dried up from off the earth and Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked and behold the face of the ground was dry 14 And in the second moneth on the seven and twentieth day of the moneth was the earth dried 15 ¶ And God spake unto Noah saying 16 Go forth of the ark thou and thy wife and thy sons and thy sons wives with thee 17 Bring forth with thee every living thing that is with thee of all flesh both of fowl and of cattel and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth that they may breed abundantly in the earth and be fruitful and multiply upon the earth 18 And Noah went forth and his sons and his wife and his sons wives with him 19 Every beast every creeping thing and every fowl and whatsoever creepeth upon the earth after their †Heb. families kinds went forth out of the ark 20 ¶ And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD and took of every clean beast of every clean fowl offered burnt-offerings on the altar 21 And the LORD smelled †Heb. a savour of rest a sweet savour and the LORD said in his heart I will not again curse the ground any more for mans sake for the * Chap. 6.5 Matth. 15.19 imagination of mans heart is evil from his youth neither will I again smite any more every thing living as I have done 22 †Heb. as yet all the days of the earth While the earth remaineth feed-time and harvest and cold and heat and summer and winter and day and night shall not cease CHAP. LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time 16 And said * Ps 105.9 Ecclus 44 21. XXIII 1 The age and death of Sarah 3 The purchase of Machpelah 19 where Sarah was buried ANd Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old these were the years of the life of Sarah 2 And Sarah died in Kirjath-arba the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah to weep for her 3 ¶ And Abraham stood up from before his dead and spake unto the sons of Heth saying 4 I am a stranger and a sojourner with you give me a possession of a burying place with you that I may bury my dead out of my sight 5 And the children of Heth answered Abraham saying unto him 6 Hear us my lord thou art †Heb. a prince of God a mighty prince amongst us in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre but that thou mayest bury thy dead 7 And Abraham stood up and bowed himself to the people of the land even to the children of Heth. 8 And he communed with them saying If it be your minde that I should bury my dead out of my sight hear me and intreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar 9 That he may give me the cave of Machpelah which he hath which is in the end of his field for †Heb. full money as much money as it is worth he shall give it me for a possession of a burying-place amongst you 10 And Ephron dwelt amongst the children of Heth. And Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the †Heb. ears audience of the children of Heth eveâ— of all that went in at the gates of his city saying 11 Nay my lord hear me the field give I thee and the cave that is therein I give it thee in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee bury thy dead 12 And Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land 13 And he spake unto Ephron in the audience of the people of the land saying But if thou wilt give it I pray thee hear me I will give thee money for the field take it of me and I will bury my dead there 14 And Ephron answered Abraham saying unto him 15 My lord hearken unto me the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver what is that betwixt me thee bury therefore thy dead 16 And Abraham hearkned unto Ephron and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth four hundred shekels of silver currant money with 〈◊〉 merchant 17 ¶ And the field of Ephron which was in Machpelah which was before Maâ—ure the field and the cave which was therein and all the trees that were in the field that were in all the borders round about were made sure 18 Unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth before all that went in at the gate of his city 19 And after this Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan 20 And the field and the cave that is therein were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a burying-place by the sons of Heth. CHAP. XXIV 1 Abraham sweareth his servant 10 The servants journey 12 His prayer 14 His signe 15 Rebekah meetech him 18 fulfilleth his signe 22 receiveth jenwels 23 sheweth her kindred 25 and inviteth him home 26 The servant blesseth God 29 Laban entertaineth him 34 The servant sheweth his message 50 Laban and Bethuel approve it 58 Rebekah consenteth to go 62 Isaac meeteth her ANd Abraham was old and †Heb. â—one into days well stricken in age and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things 2 And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house that ruled over all that he had * Chap. 47.29 Put I pray thee thy hand under my thigh 3 And I will make thee swear by the LORD the God of heaven and the God of the earth that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites amongst whom I dwell 4 But thou shalt go unto my countrey and to my kindred and take a wife unto my son Isaac 5 And the servant said unto him Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest 6 And Abraham said unto him Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again 7 ¶ The LORD God of heaven which took me from my fathers house and from the land of my kindred and which spake unto me and that sware unto me saying * Chap. 12.7 13.15 15.18 25.4 Unto thy seed will I give this land he shall send his angel before thee and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence 8 And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee then thou shalt be clear from this my oath onely bring not my son thither again 9 And the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master and sware to him concerning that matter 10 ¶ And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master and departed ‖ Or and. for all the good of his master were in his hand and he arose and went to Mesopotamia unto the city of Nahor 11 And he made his camels to kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening even the time †Heb. that women which draw water go forth that women go out to draw water
father that he may eat and that he may bless thee before his death 11 And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother Behold Esau my brother is a hairy man and I am a smooth man 12 My father peradventure will feel me and I shall seem to him as 〈◊〉 deceiver and I shall bring a curse upon me and not a blessing 13 And his mother said unto him Upon me be thy curse my son onely obey my voice and go fetch me them 14 And he went and fetched and brought them to his mother and his mother made savoury meat such as his father loved 15 And Rebekah took †Heb. desirable goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau which were with her in the house and put them upon Jacob her younger son 16 And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands and upon the smooth of his neck 17 And she gave the savoury meat and the bread which she had prepared into the hand of her son Jacob. 18 ¶ And he came unto his father and said My father And he said Here am I who art thou my son 19 And Jacob said unto his father I am Esau thy first-born I have done according as thou badest me arise I pray thee sit and eat of my venison that thy soul may bless me 20 And Isaac said unto his son How is it that thou hast found it so quickly my son And he said Because the LORD thy God brought it †Heb. before â—â—e to me 21 And Isaac said unto Jacob come near I pray thee that I may feel thee my son whether thou be my very son Esau or not 22 And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father and he felt him and said The voice is Jacobs voice but the hands are the hands of Esau 23 And he discerned him not because his hands were hairy as his brother Esaus hands So â—e blessed him 24 And he said Art thou my very son Esau And he said I am 25 And he said Bring it near to me and I will eat of my sons venison that my soul may bless thee And he brought it near to him and he did eat and he brought him wine and he drank 26 And his father Isaac said unto him Come near now and kiss me my son 27 And he came near and kissed him and he smelled the smell of his raiment and blessed him and said See the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed 28 Therefore * Heb. 11.20 God give thee of the dew of heaven and the fatness of the earth and plenty of corn and wine 29 Let people serve thee and nations bow down to thee be lord over thy brethren and let thy mothers sons bow down to thee Curseth be every one that curseth thee and blessed be he that blesseth thee 30 ¶ And it came to pass assoon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father that Esau his brother came in from his hunting 31 And he also had made savour meat and brought it unto his father and said unto his father Let my father arise and eat of his sons venison that thy soul may bless me 32 And Isaac his father said unto him Who art thou And he said I am thy son thy first-born Esau 33 And Isaac †Heb. trembled with a great trembling greatly trembled very exceedingly and said Who where is he that hath †Heb. â—â—â—ted taken venison and brought it me and I have eaten of all before thou camest and have blessed him yea and he shall be blessed 34 And when Esau heard the words of his father he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry and said unto his father Bless me even me also O my father 35 And he said Thy brother came with subtilty and hath taken away thy blessing 36 And he said Is not he rightly named ‖ That is a supplanter Jacob for he hath supplanted me these two times he took away my birth-right and behold now he hath taken away my blessing And he said Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me 37 And Isaac answered and said unto Esau Behold I have made him thy lord and all his brethren have I given to him for servants and with corn and wine have I ‖ Or supported sustained him and what shall I do now unto thee my son 38 And Esau said unto his father Hast thou but one blessing my father bless me even me also O my father And Esau lift up his voice * Heb. 12.17 and wept 39 And Isaac his father answered said unto him Behold * Vers 28. thy dwelling shall be ‖ Or of the fatness the fatness of the earth of the dew of heaven from above 40 And by thy sword shalt thou live and shalt serve thy brother and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck 41 ¶ And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him and Esau said in his heart The days of mourning for my father are at hand * Oâ—ed 10. then will I slay my brother Jacob. 42 And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah And she sent and called Jacob her younger son and said unto him Behold thy brother Esau as touching thee doth comfort himself purposing to kill thee 43 Now therefore my son obey my voice and arise flee thou to Lahan my brother to Haran 44 And tarry with him a few days until thy brothers fury turn away 45 Until thy brothers anger turn away from thee and he forget that which thou hast done to him then I will send and fetch thee from thence Why should I be deprived also of you both in one day 46 And Rebekah said to Isaac * Chap. 26.35 I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth such as these which are of the daughters of the land what good shall my life do me CHAP. your father 18 ¶ Then Judah came near unto him and said O my lord let thy servant I pray thee speak a word in my lords ears and let not thine anger burn against thy servant for thou art even as Pharaoh 19 My lord asked his servants saying Have ye a father or a brother 20 And we said unto my lord We have a father an old man and a childe of his old age a little one and his brother is dead and he alone is left of his mother and his father loveth him 21 And thou saidest unto thy servants Bring him down unto me that I may set mine eyes upon him 22 And we said unto my lord The lad cannot leave his father for if he should leave his father his father would die 23 And thou saidest unto thy servants * Chap. 43.3 except your youngest brother come down with you you shall see my face no more 24 And it came to pass when we came up unto thy servant my father we told him the words of my lord 25 And our father said Go again and buy us a little food 26 And we said We cannot go down if our youngest brother be with us then will we go down for we may not see the mans face except our youngest brother be with us 27 And thy servant my father said unto us Ye know that my wife bare me two sons 28 And the one went out from me and I said * Ch. 37.33 Surely he is torn in pieces and I saw him not since 29 And if ye take this also from me and mischief befal him ye shall bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave 30 Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father and the lad be not with us seeing that his life is bound up in the lads life 31 It shall come to pass when he seeth that the lad is not with us that he will die and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave 32 For thy servant became surety for the lad unto my father saying * Ch. 43.9 If I bring him not unto thee then I shall bear the blame to my father for ever 33 Now therefore I pray thee let thy servant abide in stead of the lad a bondman to my lord and let the lad go up with his brethren 34 For how shall I go up to my father and the lad be not with me lest peradventure I see the evil that shall †Heb. finde my father come on my father CHAP. XLV 1 Joseph maketh himself known to his brethren 5 He comforteth them in Gods providence 9 He sendeth for his father 16 Pharaoh confirmeth it 21 Joseph furâ—sâ—eth them for their journey and exâ—orteth them to concord 25 Jacob is revived with the news THen Joseph could not refrain himself before all them that stood by him and he cryed Cause every man to go out from me and there stood no man with him while Joseph made himself known unto his brethren 2 And he †Heb. gave fâ—rth his voice in weeping wept aloud and the Egyptians and the house of Pharaoh heard 3 And Joseph said unto his brethren * Act. 7.13 I am Joseph doth my father yet live and his brethren could not answer him for they were ‖ Or terrified troubled at his presence 4 And Joseph said unto his brethren Come near to me I pray you and they came near and he said I am Joseph your brother whom ye sold into Egypt 5 Now therefore be not grieved †Heb. neither let there be anâ—er in your eyes nor angry with your selves that ye sold me hither * Ch. 50.20 for God did send me before you to preserve life 6 For these two years hath the famine been in the land and yet there are five years in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest 7 And God sent me before you †Heb. to put for you a remnant to preserve you a posterity in the earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance 8 So now it was not you that sent me hither but God and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh and lord of all his house and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt 9 Haste you and go up to my father and say unto him Thus saith thy son Joseph God hath made me lord of all Egypt come down unto me tarry not 10 And thou shalt dwell in the land of Goshen and thou shalt be near unto me thou and thy children and thy childrens children and thy flocks and thy herds and all that thou hast 11 And there will I nourish thee for yet there are five years of famine lest thou and thy houshold and all that thou hast come to poverty 12 And behold your eyes see and the eyes of my brother Benjamin that it is my mouth that speaketh unto you 13 And you shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt and of all that you have seen and ye shall haste and bring down my father hither 14 And he fell upon his brother Benjamins neck and wept and Benjamin wept upon his neck 15 Moreover he kissed all his brethren and wept upon them and after that his brethren talked with him 16 ¶ And the same thereof was heard in Pharaohs house saying Josephs brethren are come and it †Heb. was good in the eyes of Pharaoh pleased Pharaoh well and his servants 17 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph Say unto thy brethren this do ye lade your beasts and go get you unto the land of Canaan 18 And take your father and your housholds and come unto me and I will give you the good of the land of Egypt and ye shall eat the fat of the land 19 Now thou art commanded this do ye take you wagons out of the land of Egypt for your little ones and for your wives and bring your father and come 20 Also †Heb. let not your eye spâ—re c. regard not your stuff for the good of all the land of Egypt is yours 21 And the children of Israel did so and Joseph gave them wagons according to the †Heb. mouth commandment of Pharaoh and gave them provision for the way 22 To all of them he gave each man changes of raiment but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver five changes of raiment 23 And to his father he sent after this manner ten asses †Heb. caâ—râ—â—ng laden with the good things of Egypt and ten she asses laden with corn and bread and meat for his father by the way 24 So he sent his brethren away and they departed and he said unto them See that ye fall not out by the way 25 ¶ And they went up out of Egypt and came into the land of Canaan unto Jacob their father 26 And told him saying Joseph is yet alive and he is governour over all the

The days of the years of my pilgrimage are an hundred and thirty years few and evil have the dayâ— of the years of my liâ—e been and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage 10 And Jacob blessed Pharaoh and went out from before Pharaoh 11 ¶ And Joseph placed his father and his brethren and gave them a possession in the land of Egypt in the best of the land in the land of Rameses as Pharaoh had commanded 12 And Joseph nourished his father and his brethren and all his fathers houshold with bread ‖ Or as a little childe is nourished †Heb. according to the little ones according to their families 13 ¶ And there was no bread in all the land for the famine was very sore so that the land of Egypt and all the land of Canaan sainted by reason of the famine 14 And Joseph gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan for the corn which they bought and Joseph brought the money into Pharaohs house 15 And when money failed in the land of Egypt and in the land of Canaan all the Egyptians came unto Joseph and said Give us bread for why should we die in thy presence for the money faileth 16 And Joseph said Give your cattel and I will give you for your cattel if money fail 17 And they brought their cattel unto Joseph and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses and for the flocks and for the cattel of the herds and for the asses and he †Heb. led them sed them with bread for all their cattel for that year 18 When that year was ended they came unto him the second year and said unto him We will hot hide it from my lord how that our money is spent my lord also hath our herds of cattel there is not ought left in the sight of my lord but our bodies and our lands 19 Wherefore shall we die before thine eyes both we and our land buy us and our land for bread and we and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh and give us seed that we may live and not die that the land be not desolate 20 And Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh for the Egyptians sold every man his field because the famine prevailed over them so the land became Pharaohs 21 And as for the people he removed them to cities from one end of the borders of Egypt even to the other end thereof 22 Onely the land of the ‖ Or princes priests bought he not for the priests had a portion assigned them of Pharaoh and did eat their portion which Pharaoh gave them wherefore they sold not their lands 23 Then Joseph said unto the people Behold I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh so here is seed for you and ye shall sow the land 24 And it shall come to pass in the increase that you shall give the fifth part unto Pharaoh and four parts shall be your own for seed of the field and for your food and for them of your housholds and for food for your little ones 25 And they said Thou hast saved our lives let us finde grace in the sight of my lord and we will be Pharaohs servants 26 And Joseph made it a law over the land of Egypt unto this day that Pharaoh should have the fifth part except the land of the ‖ Or princes priests onely which became not Pharaohs 27 ¶ And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt in the countrey of Goshen and they had possessions therein and grew and multiplyed exceedingly 28 And Jacob lived in the land of Egypt seventeen years so †Heb. the days of the years of his life the whole age of Jacob was an hundred fourty and seven years 29 And the time drew nigh that Israel must die and he called his son Joseph and said unto him If now I have found grace in thy sight * Ch. 24.2 put I pray thee thy hand under my thigh and deal kindly and truly with me bury me not I pray thee in Egypt 30 But I will he with my fathers and thou shalt carry me out of Egypt and bury me in their burying-place And he said I will do as thou hast said 31 And he said Swear unto me And he sware unto him And * Hebr. 31.21 Israel bowed himself upon the beds head CHAP. XLVIII 1 Joseph with his sons visiteth his sick father 2 Jacob strengtheneth himself to bless them 3 He repeateth the promise 5 He taketh Ephraim and Manasseh as his own 7 He telleth Joseph of his mothers grave 9 He blesseth Echraim and Manasseb 17 He preferreth the younger before the older 21 He prophesieth their return to Canaan ANd it came to pass after these things that one told Joseph Behold thy father is sick and he took with him his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim 2 And one told Jacob and said Behold thy son Joseph cometh unto thee and Israel strengthned himself and sat upon the bed 3 And Jacob said unto Joseph God almighty appeared unto me at * Ch. 28.13 〈◊〉 35.6 Luz in the land of Canaan and blessed me 4 And said unto me Behold I will make thee fruitful and multiply thee and I will make of thee a multitude of people and will give this land to thy seed after thee for an everlasting possession 5 ¶ and now thy * Ch. 41.50 Jos 13.7 two sons Ephraim and Manasseh which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt are mine as Reuben and Simeon they shall be mine 6 And thy issue which thou begettest after them shall be thine and shall be called after the name of their brethren in their inheritance 7 And as for me when I came from Padan * Ch. 35.19 Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan in the way when yet thâ—ee was but a little way to come unto Ephrath and I buried her there in the way of Ephrath the same is Beth lehem 8 And Israel beheld Josephs sons and said Who are these 9 And Joseph said unto his father They are my sons whom God hath given me in this place And he said Bring them I pray thee unto me and I will bless them 10 Now the eyes of Israel were †Heb. heavy dim for age so that he could not see And he brought them near unto him and he kissed them and embraced them 11 And Israel said unto Joseph I had not thought to see thy face and

XXXV 1 Eight and fourty cities for the Levites with their suburâ—s and measure thereof 6 Six of them are to be cities of refuge 9 The laws of murder 31 No satisfaction for murder ANd the LORD spake unto Moses in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho saying 2 * Josh 21. â— Command the children of Israel that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them 3 And the cities shall they have to dwell in and the suburbs of them shall be for their cattel and for their goods and for all their beasts 4 And the suburbs of the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about 5 And ye shall measure from without the city on the east-side two thousand cubits and on the south-side two thousand cubits and on the west side two thousand cubits and on the north-side two thousand cubits and the city shall be you that the slayer may flee thither which killeth any person †Heb. by errour at unawares 12 And they shall be unto you cities for refuge from the avenger that the man-slayer die not until he stand before the congregation in judgement 13 And of these cities which ye shall give six cities shall ye have for refuge 14 Ye shall give three cities on this side Jordan and three cities shall ye give in the land of Canaan which shall be cities of refuge 15 These six cities shall be a refuge both for the children of Israel and for the stranger and for the sojourner among them that every one that killeth any person unawares may flee thither 16 * Exod. 21.14 And if he smite him with an instrument of iron so that he die he is a murderer the murderer shall surely be put to death 17 And if he smite him †Heb. with a stone of the band with throwing a stone wherewith he may die and he die he is a murderer the murderer shall surely be put to death 18 Or if he smite him with an hand-weapon of wood wherewith he may die and he die he is a murderer the murderer shall surely be put to death 19 The revenger of bloud himself shall slay the murderer when he meeteth him he shall slay him 20 But * Deut. 19.11 if he thrust him of hatred or hurl at him by laying of wait that he die 21 Or in enmity smite him with his hand that he die he that smote him shall surely be put to death for he is a murderer the revenger of bloud shall slay the murderer when he meeteth him 22 But if he thrust him suddenly * Exod. 21. â—3 without enmity or have cast upon him any thing without laying of wait 23 Or with any stone wherewith a man may die seeing him not and cast it upon him that he die and was not his enemy neither sought his harm 24 Then the congregation shall judge between the slayer and the revenger of bloud according to these judgements 25 And the congregation shall deliver the slayer out of the hand of the revenger of bloud and the congregation shall restore him to the city of his refuge wither he was fled and he shall abide in it unto the death of the high priest which was anointed with the holy oyl 26 But if the slayer shall at any time come without the border of the city of his refuge whether he was fled 27 And the revenger of bloud finde him without the borders of the city of his refuge and the revenger of bloud kill the slayer †Heb. no bloud shall be to him he shall not be guilty of bloud 28 Because he should have remained in the city of his refuge until the death of the high priest but after the death of the high priest the slayer shall return into the land of his possession 29 So these things shall be for a statute of judgement unto you throughout your generations in all your dwellings 30 Whoso killeth any person the murderer shall be put to death by the * XXVIII 1 The blessings for obedience 15 The curses for disobedience ANd it shall come to pass * Levit 26.3 if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth 2 And all these blessings shall come on thee and overtake thee if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God 3 Blessed shalt thou be in the city blessed shalt thou be in the field 4 Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy ground and the fruit of thy cattel the increase of thy kine and the flocks of thy sheep 5 Blessed shall be thy basket and thy ‖ Or dough or kneading-troughs store 6 Blessed shalt thou be when thou comest in and blessed shalt thou be when thou goest out 7 The LORD shall cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thy face they shall come out against thee one way and flee before thee seven ways 8 The 29 And thou shalt grope at noon-days as the blind gropeth in darkness and thou shalt net prosper in thy ways and thou shalt be onely oppressed and spoiled evermore and no man shall save thee 30 Thou shalt betroth a wife and another man shall lie with her thou shalt build an house and thou shalt not dwell therein * Chap. 20.6 thou shalt plant a vineyard and shalt not †Heb. profane or use it as common meat gather the grapes thereof 31 Thine ox shall be slain â—â—â—ore thine eyes and thou shalt not eat thereof thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face and †Heb. shall not return to thee shall not be restored to thee thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies and thou shalt have none to rescue them 32 Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people and thine eyes sâ—all look and fail with longing for them all the day long and there shall be no might in thine hand 33 The fruit of thy land and all thy labours shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up and thou shalt be onely oppressed and crushed alway 34 So that thou shalt be mad for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see 35 The LORD shall smite thee in the knees and in the legs with a sore botch that cannot be healed from the sole of thy foot unto the top of thy head 36 The LORD shall
keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all tâ—ine heart and with all thy soul 11 ¶ For this commandment which I command thee this day it is not hidden from thee neither is it far off 12 * Rom. 10.6 c. It is not in heaven that thou shouldest say Who shall go up for us to heaven and bring it unto us that we may hear it and do it 13 Neither is it beyond the sea that thou shouldest say Who shall go over the sea for us and bring it unto us that we may hear it and do it 14 But the word is very nigh unto thee in thy mouth and in thy heart that thou mayest do it 15 ¶ See I have set before thee this day life good and death and evil 16 In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God to walk in his ways to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgements that thou mayest live and multiply and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it 17 But if thine heart turn away so that thou wilt not hear but shalt be drawn away and worship other gods and serve them 18 I denounce unto you this day that ye shall surely perish and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it 19 * Chap. 4.26 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you that I have set before you life and death blessing and cursing therefore choose life that both thou and thy seed may â—ive 20 That thou mayest love the LORD thy God and that thou mayest obey his voice and that thou mayest cleave unto him for he is thy life and the length of thy days that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob to give them CHAP. XXXI 1 Moses encourageth the people 7 He encourageth Joshua 9 He delivereth the law unto the priests to read it in the seventh â—ear to the people 14 God giveth a charge to Joshua 19 and a song to testifie against the people 24 Moses delivereth the book of the law to the Levites to keep 28 He maketh a protestation to the elders ANd Moses went and spake these words unto all Israel 2 And he said unto them I am an hundred and twenty years old this day I can no more go out and come in also the LORD hath said unto me * Numb 20.12 Chap. 3.27 Thou shalt not go over this Jordan 3 The LORD thy God he will go over before thee and he will destroy these nations from before thee and thou shalt possess them and Joshua he shall go over before thee * Numb 27.21 as the LORD hath said 4 And the LORD shall do unto them as he did to Sihon and to Og kings of the Amorites and unto the land of them whom he destroyed 5 And * Chap. â— 2 the LORD shall give them up before your face that ye may do unto them according unto all the commandments which I have commanded you 6 Be strong and of a goood courage fear not nor be afraid of them for the LORD thy God he it is that doth go with thee he will not fail thee nor forsake thee 7 ¶ And Moses called unto Joshua and said unto him in the sight of all Israel Be strong and of a good courage for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers to give them and thou shalt cause them to inherit it 8 And the LORD he it is that doth go before thee he will be with thee he will not fail thee neither forsake thee fear not neither be dismayed 9 ¶ And Moses wrote this law and delivered it unto the priests the sons of Levi which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD and unto all the elders of Israel 10 And Moses commanded them saying At the end of every seven years in the solemnity of the * Chap. 25.1 year of release in the fâ—ast of tabernacles 11 When all Israel is come to appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose thou shalt read this law before all Israel in their hearing 12 Gather the people together men and women and children and thy stranger that is within thy gates that they may hear and that they may learn and fear the LORD your God and observe to do all the words of this law 13 And that their children which have not known any thing may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God as long as ye live in the land whither ye go over Jordan to possess it 14 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Behold thy days approach that thou must die call Joshua and present yourselves in the tabernacle of the congregation that I may give him a charge And Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the tabernacle of the congregation 15 And the LORD appeared in the tabernacle in a pillar of a cloud and the pillar of the cloud stood over the door of the tabernacle 16 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Behold thou shalt †Heb. lie down sleep with thy fathers and this people will rise up and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land whither they go to be amongst them and will forsake me and break my covenant which I have made with them 17 Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day and I will forsake them and I will hide my face from them and they shall be devoured and many evils and troubles shall †Heb. finde them befal them so that they will say in that day Are not these evils come upon us because our God is not amongst us 18 And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought in that they are turned unto other gods 19 Now therefore write ye this song for you and teach it the children of Israel put it in their mouths that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel 20 For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers that floweth with milk and honey and they shall have eaten and filled themselves and waxen fat then will they turn unto other gods and serve them and provoke me and break my covenant 21 And it shall come to pass when many evils and troubles are befaln them that this song shall testifie †Heb. before against them as a witness for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed for I know their imagination which they †Heb. dâ— go about even now before I have brought them into the land which I sware 22 ¶ Moses

XXXIII 1 The majesty of God 6 The blessings of the twelve tribes 26 The excellency of Israel ANd this is the blessing wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death 2 And he said the LORD came from Sinai and rose up from Seir unto them he shined forth from mount Paran and he came with ten thousands of saints from his right hand went †Heb a fire of law a fiery law for them 3 Yea he loved the people all his saints are in thy hand and they sat down at thy feet every one shall receive of thy words 4 Moses commanded us a law even the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob. 5 And he was king in Jeshurun when the heads of the people and the tribes of Israel were gathered together 6 ¶ Let Reuben live and not die and let not his men be few 7 ¶ And this is the blessing of Judah and he said Hear LORD the voice of Judah and bring him unto his people let his hands be sufficient for him and be thou an help to him from his enemies 8 ¶ And of Levi he said * Exod. 28.30 Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be with thy holy one whom thou didst prove at Massah and with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah 9 Who said unto his father and to his mother I have not seen him neither did he acknowledge his brethren nor knew his own children for they have observed thy word and kept thy covenant 10 ‖ Or Let them teach c. They shall teach Jacob thy judgements and Israel thy law ‖ Or let them put incense they shall put incense †Heb. at thy nose before thee and whole burnt sacrifice upon thy altar 11 Bless LORD his substance and accept the work of his hands smite through the loyns of them that rise against him and of them that hate him that they rise not again 12 ¶ And of Benjamin he said The beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by him and the LORD shall cover him all the day long and he shall dwell between his shoulders 13 ¶ And of Joseph he said * Gen. 49.25 Blessed of the LORD be his land for the precious things of heaven for the dew and for the deep that coucheth beneath 14 And for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun and for the precious things †Heb. thrust forth put forth by the †Heb. moons moon 15 And for the chief things of the ancient mountains and for the precious things of the lasting hills 16 And for the precious things of the earth and fulness thereof and for the good will of him that dwelt in the bush let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph and upon the top of the head of him that * Gen. 49.26 was separated from his brethren 17 His glory is like the firstling of his bullock and his horns are like the horns of unicorns with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim and they are the thousands of Manasleh 18 ¶ And of Zebulun he said Rejoyce Zebulun in thy going out and Issachar in thy tents 19 They shall call the people unto the mountain there they shall offer sacrifices of righteousness for they shall suck of the abundance of the seas and of treasures hid in the sand 20 ¶ And of Gad he said Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad he dwelleth as a lion and teareth the arm with the crown of the head 21 And he provided the first part for himself because there in a portion of the law-giver was he
†Heb. ciâ—led seated and he came with the heads of the people he executed the justice of the LORD and his judgements with Israel 22 ¶ And of Dan he said Dan is a lions whelp he shall leap from Bashan 23 ¶ And of Naphtali he said O Naphtali satisfied with favour full with the blessing of the LORD possess thou the west and the south 24 ¶ And of Asher he said Let Asher be blessed with children let him be acceptable to his brethren and let him dip his foot in oyl 25 ‖ Or under thy shoes shall be iron Thy shoes shall be iron and brass and as thy days so shall thy strength be 26 ¶ There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun who rideth upon the heaven in thy help and in his excellency on the skie 27 The eternal God is thy refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee and shall say Destroy them 28 * Jer. 23.6 Israel then shall dwell in safety alone the fountain of Jacob shall be upon a land of corn and wine also his heaven shall drop down dew 29 Happy art thou O Israel who is like unto thee O people saved by the LORD the shield of thy help and who is the sword of thy excellency and thine enemies ‖ Or shall be subdued shall be found liars unto thee and thou shalt tread upon their high places CHAP. I. 1 The Lord appointeth Joshua to succeed Moses 3 The borders of the promised land 5.9 God promiseth to asist Joshua 8 He giveth him instructions 10 He prepareth the people to pass over Jordan 12 Joshua putteth the two tribes and half in mind of their promise to Moses 15 They promise him fealty NOw after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun Moses * Deut. 1.38 minister saying 2 Moses my servant is dead now therefore arise go over this Jordan thou and all this people unto the land which I do give to them even to the children of Israel 3 * Deut. 11.24 Ch. 14.9 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon that have I given unto you as I said unto Moses 4 From the wilderness and this Lehanon even unto the great river the river Euphrates all the land of the Hittites and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your coast 5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life as I was with Moses so I will be with thee * Heb. 13.5 I will not sail thee nor forsake thee 6 * Deut. 31.23 Be strong and of a good courage for ‖ Or thou shalt cause thâ—â— people to inherit the land c. unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land which I sware unto their fathers to give them 7 Onely be thou strong and very couragious that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded thee * Deu. 5.32 28.14 turn not from it to the right hand or to the left that thou mayest ‖ Or do wisely prosper withersoever thou goest 8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth but thou shalt meditate therein day and night that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous and then thou shalt ‖ Or do wisely have good success 9 Have not I commanded thee Be strong and of a good courage be not afraid neither be thou dismayed for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest 10 ¶ Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people saying 11 Pass through the host and command the people saying prepare you victuals for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan to go in to possess the land which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it 12 ¶ And to the Reubenites and to the Gadites and to half the tribe of Manasseh spake Joshua saying 13 Remember * Numb 32.20 the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you saying The LORD your God hath given you rest and hath given you this land 14 Your wives your little ones and your cattel shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan but ye shall pass before your brethren †Heb. marshalled by five armed all the mighty men of valour and help them 15 Until the LORD have given your brethren rest as he hath given you and they also have possessed the land which the LORD your God giveth them then ye shall return unto the land of your possession and enjoy it
which Moses the LORDs servant gave you on this side Jordan toward the sun-rising 16 ¶ And they answered Joshua saying All that thou commandest us we will do and whithersoever thou sendest us we will go 17 According as we hearkned unto Moses in all things so will we hearken unto thee onely the LORD thy God be with thee as he was with Moses 18 Whosoever he be that doth rebel against thy commandment and will not hearken unto thy words in all that thou commandest him he shall be put to death onely be strong and of a good courage CHAP. II. 1 Rahab receiveth and concealeth the two spies sent from Shittim 8 The covenant between her and them 23 Their return and relation ANd Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spie secretly saying Go view the land even Jericho and they went and * Heb. 11.31 Jam. 2.25 came into an harlots house named Rahab and †Heb. lay lodged there 2 And it was told the king of Jericho saying Behold there came men in hitherto night of the children of Israel to search out the countrey 3 And the king of Jericho sent unto Rahab saying Bring forth the men that are come to thee which are entred into thine house for they be come to search out all the countrey 4 And the woman took the two men and hid them and said thus There came men unto me but I wist not whence they were 5 And it came to pass about the time of shutting of the gate when it was dark that the men went out whither the men went I wot not pursue after them quickly for ye shall overtake them 6 But she had brought them up to the roof of the house and hid them with the stalks of flax which she had laid in order upon the roof 7 And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan unto the foords and assoon as they which pursued after them were gone out they shut the gate 8 ¶ And before they were said down she came up unto them upon the roof 9 And she said unto the men I know that the LORD hath given you the land and that your terrour is faln upon us and that all the inhabitants of the land †Heb. melt faint because of you 10 For we have heard how the LORD * â—x 14.21 Ch. 4.23 dried up the water of the Red sea for you when you came out of Egypt and what you did unto the two kings of the Amorites that were on the other side Jordan * Numâ— 21.24 Sihon and Oâ— whom ye utterly destroyed 11 And assoon as we had heard these things our hearts did melt neither †Heb. râ—se up did there remain any more courage in any man because of you for the LORD your God he is God in heaven above and in earth beneath 12 Now therefore I pray you swear unto me by the LORD since I have shewed you kindness that ye will also shew kindness unto my fathers house and give me a true token 13 And that ye will save alive my father and my mother and my brethren and my sisters and all that they have and deliver our lives from death 14 And the men answered her Our life †Heb. in stead of you to die for yours if ye utter not this our business And it shall be when the LORD hath given us the land that we will deal kindly and truly with thee 15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window for her house was upon the town-wall and she dwelt upon the wall 16 And she said unto them Get you to the mountain lest the pursuers meet you and hide your selves there three days until the pursuers be returned and alterward may ye go your way 17 And the men said unto her We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear 18 Behold when we come into the land thou shalt binde this line of scarlet threed in the window which thou didst let us down by and thou shalt †Heb. gathâ—r bring thy father and thy mother and thy brethren and all thy fathers houshold home unto thee 19 And it shall be that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street his bloud shall be upon his head and we will be guiltless and whoseover shall be with thee in the house his blood shall be on our head if any hand be upon him 20 And if thou utter this our business then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear 21 And she said According unto your words so be it And she sent them away and they departed and she bound the scarlet line in the window 22 And they went and came unto the mountain and abode there three days until the pursuers were returned And the pursuers sought them throughout all the way but found them not 23 ¶ So the two men returned and descended from the mountain and passed over and came to Joshua the son of Nun and told him all things that befel them 24 And they said unto Joshua Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land for even all the inhabitants of the countrey do †Heb. melt faint because of us CHAP. III. 1 Joshua cometh to Jordan 2 The officers instruct the people for the passage 7 The Lord encourageth Joshua 9 Joshua encourageth the people 14 The waters of Jordan are divided ANd Joshua rose early in the morning and they removed from Shittim and came to Jordan he and all the children of Israel and lodged there before they passed over 2 And it came to pass after three days that the officers went through the host 3 And they commanded the people saying When ye see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God and the priests the Levites bearing it then ye shall remove from your place and go after it 4 Yet there shall be a space between you and it about two thousand cubits by measure come not near unto it that ye may know the way by which ye must go for ye have not passed this way †Heb. since yesterday and the third day heretofore 5 And Joshua said unto the people * Lev. 20.7 Num. 11.18 Chap. 7.13 1 Sam. 16.5 Sanctifie your selves for to morrow the LORD will do wonders among you 6 And Joshua spake unto the priests saying Take up the ark of the covenant and pass over before the people And they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people 7 ¶ And the LORD said unto Joshua This day will I begin to magnifie thee in the sight of all Israel that they may know that * Chap. 1.5 as I was with Moses so I will be with thee 8 And thou shalt command the priests that bare the ark of the covenant saying When ye are come to the brink of the water of Jordan ye shall stand still in

And a fire was kindled in their company the flame burnt up the wicked 19 * Exod. 32.4 They made a calf in Horeb and worshipped the molten image 20 Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass 21 They forgat God their saviour which had done great things in Egypt 22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham and terrible things by the Red sea 23 * Exod. 32.10 Therefore he said that he would destroy them had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach to turn away his wrath lest he should destroy them 24 Yea they despised †Heb. a land of dâ—sirâ— the pleasant land they beleeved not his word 25 * Numb 14.2 But murmured in their tents and hearkned not unto the voice of the LORD 26 Therefore he lifted up his hand against them to overthrow them in the wilderness 27 †Heb. to make them fall To overthrow their seed also among the nations and to scatter them in the lands 28 * Numb 25.3 They joyned themselves also unto Baal-peor and ate the sacrifices of the dead 29 Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions and the plague brake in upon them 30 * Numb 25.7 Then stood up Phinehas and executed judgement and so the plague wâ—â— stayed 31 And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore 32 * Numb 20.13 They angred him also at the waters of strife so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes 33 Because they provoked his spirit so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips 34 They did not destroy the nations * Deut. 7.2 concerning whom the LORD commanded them 35 * Judg. 1.21 But were mingled among the heathen and learned their works 36 And they served their idols which were a snare unto them 37 Yea they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils 38 And shed innocent bloud even the bloud of their sons and of their daughters whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan and the land was polluted with bloud 39 Thus were they defiled with their own works and went a whoring with their own inventions 40 Therefore was the wrath of the LORD kindled against his people insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance 41 And he gave them into the hand of the heathen and they that hated them ruled over them 42 Their enemies also oppressed them and they were brought into subjection under their hand 43 * Judg. 2.16 Many times did he deliver them but they provoked him with their counsel and were ‖ Or impoverished or weakned brought low for their iniquity 44 Nevertheless he regarded their affliction when he heard their cry 45 * Deut. 30.3 And he remembred for them his covenant and repented according to the multitude of his mercies 46 He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives 47 Save us O LORD our God and gather us from among the heathen to give thanks unto thy holy name and to triumph in thy praise 48 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting and let all the people say Amen Praise ye the LORD PSAL. Where no counsel is the people fall but in the multitude of counsellours there is safety 15 He that is surety for a stranger †Heb. shall be sore broken shall smart for it and he that hateth †Heb. those that strike hands suretiship is sure 16 A gracious woman retaineth honour and strong men retain riches 17 The merciful man doeth good to his own soul but he that is cruel troubleth his own flesh 18 The wicked worketh a deceitful work but to him that soweth righteousness shall be a sure reward 19 As righteousness tendeth to life so he that pursueth evil pursueth it to his own death 20 They that are of a froward heart are abomination to the LORD but such as are upright in their way are his delight 21 Though hand joyn in hand the wicked shall not be unpunished but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered 22 As a jewel of gold in a swines snout so is a fair woman which †Heb. departeth from is without discretion 23 The desire of the righteous is onely good but the expectation of the wicked is wrath 24 There is that scattereth and yet increaseth and there is that withholdeth more then is meet but it tendeth to poverty 25 * 2 Cor. 9.8 9 10. †Heb. the soul of blessing The liberal soul shall be made fat and he that watereth shall be watered also himself 26 He that withholdeth corn the people shall curse him but blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it 27 He that diligently seeketh good procureth favour * Ps 7.15 16. 9.15 16. 10.2 57.6 but he that seeketh mischief it shall come unto him 28 He that trusteth in his riches shall fall but * Ps 1.2 92.12 c. XII WHoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge but he that hateth reproof is brâ—tish 2 A good man obtaineth favour of the LORD but a man of wicked devices will he condemn 3 A man shall not be established by wickedness but the * Ch. 10.25 root of the righteous shall not be moved 4 * 1 Cor. 11.7 A vertuous woman is a crown to her husband but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones 5 The thoughts of the righteous are right but the counsels of the wicked are deceit 6 * Chap. 1.11 18. The words of the wicked are to lie in wait for bloud but the mouth of the upright shall deliver them 7 * Ps 37.37 Ch. 11.21 The wicked are overthrown and are not but the house of the righteous shall stand 8 A man shall be commended according to his wisdom but he that is †Heb. perverse of â—eart of a perverse heart shall be despised 9 He that is despised and hath a servant is better then he that honoureth himself and lacketh bread 10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast but the ‖ Or bowels tender mercies of the wicked are cruel 11 * Chap. 28.19 He that tilleth his land shall be satisfied with bread but he that followeth vain persons is void of understanding 12 The wicked desireth ‖ Or the fortress the net of evil men but the root of the righteous yeeldeth fruit 13 †Heb. the snare of the wicked is in the transgression of lips * Ch. 18.7 The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips but the just shall come out of trouble 14 * Ch. 13.2 A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth and the recompense of a mans hands shall be rendred unto him 15 * Ch. 3.7 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes but he that hearkneth unto counsel is wise 16 A fools wrath is †Heb. in that day presently known but a prudent man covereth shame 17 * Ch. 14.5 He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness but a false witness deceit 18 * Ps 57.4 and 59.7 There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword but the tongue of the wise is health 19 The lip of truth shall be established for ever but a lying tongue is but for a moment 20 Deceit is in the heart of them that imagine evil but to the counsellours of peace is joy 21 There shall no evil happen to the just but the wicked shall be filled with mischief 22 Lying lips are abomination to the LORD but they that deal truly are his delight 23 * Ch. 13.16 15.2 A prudent man concealeth knowledge but the heart of fools proclaimeth foolishness 24 * Ch. 10.4 The hand of the diligent shall bear rule but the ‖ Or deceitful slothful shall be under tribute 25 * Ch. 15.13 Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop but a good word maketh it glad 26 The righteous is more ‖ Or abundant excellent then his neighbour but the way of the wicked seduceth them 27 The slothful man

III. 3 The rest of their prayer and confession contained in that book which Baruch wrote and sent to Jerusalem 30 Wisdom was shewed first to Jacob and was seen upon the earth O Lord almighty God of Israel the soul in anguish the troubled spirit crieth unto thee 2 Hear O Lord and have mercy for thou art merciful and have pity upon us because we have sinned before thee 3 For thou endurest for ever and we perish utterly 4 O Lord almighty thou God of Israel hear now the prayers of the dead Israelites and of their children which have sinned before thee and not hearkned unto the voice of thee their God for the which cause these plagues cleave unto us 5 Remember not the iniquities of our forefathers but think upon thy power and thy name now at this time 6 For thou art the Lord our God and thee O Lord will we praise 7 And for this cause thou hast put thy fear in our hearts to the intent that we should call upon thy name and praise thee in our captivity for * Deut. 30.1 we have called to minde all the iniquity of our forefathers that sinned before thee 8 Behold we are yet this day in our captivity where thou hast scattered us for a reproach and a curse and to be subject to payments according to all the iniquities of our fathers which departed from the Lord our God 9 Hear Israel the commandments of life give ear to understand wisdom 10 How hapneth it Israel that thou art in thine enemies land that thou art waxen old in a strange countrey that thou art defiled with the dead 11 That thou art counted with them that go down into the grave 12 Thou hast forsaken the fountain of wisdom 13 For if thou hadst walked in the way of God thou shouldest have dwelled in peace for ever 14 Learn where is wisdom where is strength where is understanding that thou mayest know also where is length of days and life where is the light of the eyes and peace 15 * Joh. 2â— 12 20. Who hath found out her place or who hath come into her treasures 16 Where are the princes of the heathen become and such as ruled the beasts upon the earth 17 They that had their pastime with the fouls of the air and they that hoarded up silver and gold wherein men trust and made no end of their getting 18 For they that wrought in silver and were so careful and whose works are unsearchable 19 They are vanished and gone down to the grave and others are come up in their steads 20 Young men have seen light and dwelt upon the earth but the way of knowledge have they not known 21 Nor understood the paths thereof nor laid hold of it their children were far off from that way 22 It hath not been heard of in Chanaan neither hath it been seen in Theman 23 The
marish likewise and wood neither is there place for us to turn aside 46 Wherefore cry ye now unto heaven that ye may be delivered from the hand of your enemies 47 With that they joyned battel and Jonathan stretched forth his hand to smite Bacchides but he turned back from him 48 Then Jonathan and they that were with him leapt into Jordan and swam over unto the farther bank howbeit the other passed not over Jordan unto them 49 So there were slain of Bacchides side that day about †two thousand men Joseph Antiq l 13. c. 1. a thousand men 50 Afterward returned Bacchides to Jerusalem and ‖ Or built repaired the strong cities in Judea the fort in Jericho and Emmaus and Bethoron and Bethel and Thamnatha Pharathoni and ‖ Joseph Tâ—â—â—a Taphon these did he strengthen with high walls with gates and with bars 51 And in them he set a garison that they might work malice upon Israel 52 He fortified also †Gr. the city in Bethsura the city Bethsura and Gazara and the towre and put forces in them and provision of victuals 53 Besides he took the chief mens sons in the countrey for hostages and put them into the towre at Jerusalem to be kept 54 Moreover in the hundred fifty third year in the second moneth Alcimus commanded that the wall of the inner court of the sanctuary should be pulled down he pulled down also the works of the prophets 55 And as he began to pull down even at that time was Alcimus plagued and his enterprises hindred for his mouth was stopped and he was taken with a palsie so that he could no more speak any thing nor give order concerning his house 56 So Alcimus died at that time with great torment 57 Now when Bacchides saw that Alcimus was dead he returned to the king whereupon the land of Judea was in rest two years 58 Then all the ungodly men held a counsel saying Behold Jonathan and his company are at ease dwell without care now therefore we will bring Bacchides hither who shall take them all in one night 59 So they went and consulted with him 60 Then removed he and came with a great host and sent letters privily to his adherents in Judea that they should take Jonathan and those that were with him howbeit they could not because their counsel was known unto them 61 Wherefore they took of the men of the countrey that were authours of that mischief about fifty persons and slew them 62 Afterward Jonathan and Simon and they that were with him got them away to Bethbasi which is in the wilderness and they repaired the decays thereof and made it strong 63 Which thing when Bacchides knew he gathered together all his host and sent word ‖ Or to such of the countrey as here his friends to take his part to them that were of Judea 64 Then went he and said siege against Bethbasi and they fought against it a long season and made engines of war 65 But Jonathan left his brother Simon in the city and went forth himself into the countrey and with a certain number went he forth 66 And he smote ‖ Or Odomarra Odonarkes and his brethren and the children of Phasiron in their tent 67 And when he began to smite them and came up with his forces Simon and his company went out of the city and burnt up the engines of war 68 And fought against Bacchides who was discomfited by them and they afflicted him sore For his counsel and travel was in vain 69 Wherefore he was very wroth at the wicked men that gave him counsel to come into the countrey insomuch as he slew many of them and purposed to return into his own countrey 70 Whereof when Jonathan had knowledge he sent ambassadours unto him to the end he should make Peace with him and deliver them the prisoners 71 Which thing he accepted and did according to his demands and sware unto him that he would never do him harm all the days of his life 72 When therefore he had restored unto him the prisoners that he had taken aforetime out of the land of Judea he returned and went his way into his own land neither †Gr. added 〈◊〉 to come any more came he any more into their borders 73 Thus the sword ceased from Israel but Jonathan dwelt at Machmas and began to †Gr. judge govern the people and he destroyed the ungodly men out of Israel CHAP. X. 1 Donetrius maketh large offers to have peace with Jonathan 25 His letters to the Jews 4. Jonathan maketh peace with Alexander 50 Who killeth Demetrius 58 and marrieth the daughter of Ptolemeus 62 Jonathan is sent for by him and much bonoured 75 and prevaileth against the forces of Demetrius the younger 84 and burneth the temple of Dagon IN the hundred and sixtieth year Alexander ‖ Joseph the son of Antiothus Epiphanes the son of Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes went up and took Ptolemais for the people had received him by means whereof he reigned there 2 Now when king Demetrius heard thereof he gathered together an exceeding great host and went forth against him to fight 3 Moreover Demetrius sent letters unto Jonathan with loving words so as he magnified him 4 For said he Let us first make peace with him before he joyn with Alexander against us 5 Else he will remember all the evils that we have done against him and against his brethren and his people 6 Wherefore he gave him authority to gather together an host and to provide weapons that he might aid him in battel he commanded also that the hostages that were in the towre should be delivered him 7 Then came Jonathan to Jerusalem and read the letters in the audience of all the people and of them that were in the towre 8 Who were sore afraid when they heard that the king had given them authority to gather together an host 9 Whereupon they of the towre delivered their hostages unto Jonathan and he delivered them unto their parents 10 This done Jonathan settled himself in Jerusalem and began to build and repair the city 11 And he commanded the workmen to build the walls and the mount Sion round about with square stones for fortification and they did so 12 Then the strangers that were in the fortresses which Bacchides had built fled away 13 Insomuch as every man left his place and went into his own countrey 14 Onely at Bethsura certain of those that had forsaken the law and the commandments remained still for it was their place of refuge 15 Now when king Alexander had heard what promises Demetrius had sent unto Jonathan when also it was told him of the hattels noble acts w e he and nis brethren had done of the pains that they had endured 16 He said Shall we finde such another man now therefore we will make him our friend and confederate 17 Upon this he wrote
‖ Joseph Antiq. l. 13.9 they went away they kindled fires in their camp 29 Howbeit Jonathan and his company knew it not till the morning for they saw the lights burning 30 Then Jonathan pursued after them but overtook them not for they were gone over the river Eleutherus 31 Wherefore Jonathan turned to the Arabians who were called †Joseph Gr. Nabatheans or Zabadeans Zabadeans and smote them and took their spoils 32 And removing thence he came to Damascus and so passed through all the countrey 33 Simon also went forth and passed through the countrey unto Ascalon and the holds there adjoyning from whence he turned aside to Jeppe and won it 34 For he had heard that they would deliver the hold unto them that took Demetrius part wherefore he set a garison there to keep it 35 After this came Jonathan home again and calling the elders of the people together he consulted with them about building strong holds in Judea 36 And making the walls of Jerusalem higher and raising a great mount between the towre and the city for to separate it from the city that so it might be alone that men might neither sell nor buy in it 37 Upon this they came together to build up the city ‖ Or according to the Remane reading and he came near to the wall of the brook toward the east forasmuch as part of the wall toward the brook on the east side was faln down and they repaired that which was called Caphenatha 38 Simon also set up Adida in Sephela and made it strong with gates and bars 39 Now Tryphon went about to get the kingdom of Asia and to kill Antiochus the king that he might set the crown upon his own head 40 Howbeit he was afraid that Jonathan would not suffer him and that he would fight against him wherefore he sought a way how to take Jonathan that he might kill him So he removed and came to Bethsan 41 Then Jonathan went out to meet him with fourty thousand men chosen for the battel and came to Bethsan 42 Now when Tryphon saw that Jonathan came with so great a force he durst not stretch his hand against him 43 But received him honourably and commended him unto all his friends and gave him gifts and commanded his men of war to be as obedient unto him as to himself 44 Unto Jonathan also he said Why hast thou put all this people to so great trouble seeing there is no war betwixt us 45 Therefore send them now home again and choose a few men to wait on thee and come thou with me to Ptolemais for I will give it thee the rest of the strong holds and forces all that have any charge as for me I will return and depart for this is the cause of my coming 46 So Jonathan beleeving him did as he bade him and sent away his host who went into the land of Judea 47 And with himself he retained but three thousand men of whom he †Gr. left two thousand in Galilee sent two thousand into Galilee and one thousand went with him 48 Now assoon as Jonathan entred into Ptolemais they of Ptolemais shut the gates and took him and all them that came with him they slew with the sword 49 Then sent Tryphon an host of footmen and hors-men into Galilee and into the great plain to destroy all Jonathans company 50 But when they knew that Jonathan and they that were with him were taken and slain they encouraged one another and went close together prepared to fight 51 They therefore that followed upon them perceiving that they were ready to fight for their lives turned back again 52 Whereupon they all came into the land of Judea peaceably and there they bewailed Jonathan and them that were with him and they were sore afraid where fore all Israel made great lamentation 53 Then all the heathen that were round about them sought to destroy them for said they they have no captain nor any to help them now therefore let us make war upon them and take away their memorial from amongst men CHAP. XIII 8 Simon is made captain in his brother Jonathans room 19 Tryphon cetteth two of Jonathans sons into his hands and slayeth their father 27 The tomb of Jonathan 36 Simon is favoured by Demetrius 40 and winneth Gaza and the towre at Jerusalem NOw when Simon heard that Tryphon had gathered together a great host to invade the land of Judea and destroy it 2 And saw that the people was in great trembling and fear he went up to Jerusalem and gathered the people together 3 And gave them exhortation saying Ye your selves know what great things I and my brethren and my fathers house have done for the laws the sanctuary the battels also and troubles which we have seen 4 By reason whereof all my brethren are slain for Israels take and I am left alone 5 Now therefore be it far from me that I should spare mine own life in any time of trouble for I am no better then my brethren 6 Doubtless I will avenge my nation and the sanctuary and our wives and our children for all the heathen are gathered to destroy us of very malice 7 Now assoon as the people heard these words their spirit revived 8 And they answered with a loud voice saying Thou shalt be our leader in stead of Judas and Jonathan thy brother 9 Fight thou our battels and whatsoever thou commandest us that will we do 10 So then he gathered together all the men of war and made haste to finish the walls of Jerusalem and he fortified it round about 11 Also he sent Jonathan the son of Absalom with him a great power to Joppe who castiny out them that were therein remained there in it 12 So Tryphon removed from Ptolemaias with a great power to invade the land of Judea and Jonathan was with him in ward 13 But Simon pitched his tents at Adida over against the plain 14 Now when Tryphon knew that Simon was men up in stead of his brother Jonathan and meant to joyn battel with him he sent messengers unto him saying 15 Whereas we have Jonathan thy brother in hold it is for money that he is owing unto the kings treasure ‖ Or for the affairs or ofâ—â—es that be had or the necessary oâ—â—â— which be had concerning the business that was committed unto him 16 Wherefore now send an hundred talents of silver and two of his sons for hostages that when he is at liberty he may not revolt from us and we will let him go 17 Hereupon Simon albeit he perceived that they spake deceitfully unto him yet sent he the money and the children lest peradventure he should procure to himself great hatred of the people 18 Who might have said Because I sent him not the money and the children therefore is Jonathan dead 19 So he sent them the children and the hundred talents howbeit Tryphon dissembled
would not be comforted because they are not 19 ¶ But when Herod was dead behold an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20 Saying Arise and take the young childe and his mother and go into the land of Israel for they are dead which sought the young childes life 21 And he arose and took the young childe and his mother and came into the land of Israel 22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judea in the room of his father Herod he was afraid to go thither notwithstanding being warned of God in a dream he turned aside into the parts of Galilee 23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets He shall be called a Nazarene CHAP. III. 1 John preacheth his office life and baptism 7 Here reprebendeth the Pharisees 13 and baptizeth Christ in Jordan IN those days came * Mar. 1.4 Luk. 3.2 John the Baptists preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 And saying Repent ye for the kingdom of heaven is at hand 3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias saying * Isa 40. â— Mar. 1.3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness Prepare ye the way of the Lord make his paths strait 4 And the same John had his raiment of camels hair and a leathern girdle about his loyns and his meat was locusts and wilde honey 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region round about Jordan 6 And were baptized of him in Jordan confessing their sins 7 ¶ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism he said unto them * Chap. 12.34 O generation of vipers who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come 8 Bring forth therefore fruits ‖ Or answerable to amendment of life meet for repentance 9 And think not to say within your selves * Joh. 8.39 We have Abraham to our father for I say unto you that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham 10 And now also the ax is laid unto the root of the trees * Chap. 7.19 therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire 11 * Mar. 1.8 Luke 3.16 John 1.26 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance but he that cometh after me is mightier then I whose shoes I am not worthy to bear he shall baptize you with the holy Ghost and with fire 12 Whose fan is in his hand and he will throughly purge his floor and gather his wheat into the garner but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire 13 ¶ * Mar. 1.9 Luk. 3.21 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John to be baptized of him 14 But John forbad him saying I have need to be baptized of thee and comest thou to me 15 And Jesus answering said unto him Suffer it to be so now for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness Then he suffered him 16 And Jesus when he was baptized went up straightway out of the water and lo the heavens were opened unto him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting upon him 17 And lo a voice from heaven saying This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased CHAP. IV. 1 Christ fasteth and is tempted 11 The angels minister unto him 13 He dwelleth in Capernaum 17 beginneth to preach 18 calleth Peter and Andrew 21 James and John 23 and healeth all the diseased THen was * Mar. 1 1â— Luk. 4.1 Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil 2 And when he had fasted fourty days and fourty nights he was afterward an hungred 3 And when the tempter came to him he said If thou be the Son of God command that these stones be made bread 4 But he answered and said It is written * Deut. 8.3 Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city and setteth him on a pinacle of the temple 6 And saith unto him If thou be the Son of God cast thy self down for it is written * Ps 91.11 He shall give his angels charge concerning thee and in their hands they shall bear thee up lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone 7 Jesus said unto him It is written again * Deut. 6.16 Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God 8 Again the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them 9 And saith unto him All these things will I give thee if thou wilt fall down and worship me 10 Then saith Jesus unto him Get thee hence Satan for it is written * Deut. 6.13 10.20 Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and him onely shalt thou serve 11 Then the devil leaveth him and behold angels came and ministred unto him 12 ¶ * Mar. 1.14 Luk. 4.14 Joh 4.43 Now when Jesus had heard that John was ‖ Or dâ—livered up cast into prison he departed into Galilee 13 And leaving Nazareth he came and dwelt in Capernaum which is upon the sea-coast in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim 14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet saying 15 * Isa 9.1 The land of Zabulon and the land of Nephthalim by the way of the sea beyond Jordan Galilee of the Gentiles 16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up 17 ¶ * Mar. 1.14 From that time Jesus began to preach and to say Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand 18 ¶ * Mar. 1.16 And Jesus walking by the sea of Galilee saw two brethren Simon called Peter and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea for they were fishers 19 And he saith unto them Follow me and I will make you fishers of men 20 And they straightway left their nets and followed him 21 And going on from thence he saw other two brethren James the son of Zebedee and John his brother in a ship with Zebedee their father mending their nets and he called them 22 And they immediatly left the ship their father followed him 23 ¶ And Jesus went about all Galilee teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people 24 And his fame went throughout all Syria and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments and those which were possessed with devils and those which were lunatick and those that had the palsie and he healed them 25 And there
22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh Thus saith the LORD Israel is my son even my first-born 23 And I say unto thee Let my son go that he may serve me and it thou refuse to let him go behold I will slay thy son even thy first born 24 ¶ And it came to pass by the way in the inn that the LORD met him and sought to kill him 25 Then Zipporah took a sharp ‖ Or knife stone and cut off the sore-skin of her son and †Heb. made it touth cast it at his feet and said Sarely a bloudy husband art thou to me 26 So he let him go then she said A bloudy husband thou art because of the circumcision 27 ¶ And the LORD said to Aaron Go into the wilderness to meet Moses And he went and met him in the mount of God and kisâ—â—â— him 28 And Moses told Aaron all the words of the LORD who had sent him and all the signs which he had commanded him 29 ¶ And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel 30 And Aaron spake all the words which the LORD had spoken unto Moses and did the signs in the sight of the people 31 And the people beseeved and when they heard that the LORD had vinted the children of Israel and that he had looked upon their affliction then they bowed their heads and worshipped CHAP. V. 1 Pharaoh ebideth Moses and Aaron for their message 5 He increaseth the Israelites task 15 He checketh their complaints 19 They cry out upon Moses and Aaron 22 Moses complaineth to God ANd afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Let my people go that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness 2 And Pharaoh said Who is the LORD that I should obey his voice to let Israel go I know not the LORD neither will I let Israel go 3 And they said * Ch. 3. â—8 The God of the Hebrews hath met with us let us go we pray thee three days journey into the desert and sacrifice unto the LORD our God lest he fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword 4 And the king of Egypt said unto them Wherefore do ye Moses and Aaron let the people from their works get you unto your burdens 5 And Pharaoh said Behold the people of the land now are many and you make them rest from their burdens 6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the task-masters of the people and their officers saying 7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick as heretofore let them go and gather straw for themselves 8 And the tale of the bricks which they did make heretofore you shall lay upon them you shall not diminish ought thereof for they be idle therefore they cry saying Let us go and sacrifice to our God 9 †Heb. let the work â—e heavy upon the men Let there more work be laid upon the men that they may labour therein and let them not regard vain words 10 ¶ And the task-masters of the people went out and their officers and they spake to the people saying Thus saith Pharaoh I will not give you straw 11 Go ye get you straw where you can find it yet not ought of your work shall be diminished 12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw 13 And the task-masters hasted them saying Fulfil your works your †Heb. a matter of a day in biâ— day daily tasks as when there was straw 14 And the officers of the children of Israel which Pharaohs task-masters had set over them were beaten and demanded Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day as heretofore 15 ¶ Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh saying Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants 16 There is no straw given unto thy servant and they say to us Make brick and behold thy servants are beaten but the fault is in thine own people 17 But he said Ye are idle ye are idle therefore ye say Let us go and do sacrifice to the LORD 18 Go therefore now and work for there shall no straw be given you yet shall ye deliver the tale of bricks 19 And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case after it was said Ye shall not minish ought from your bricks of your daily task 20 ¶ And they met Moses and Aaron who stood in the way as they came forth from Pharaoh 21 And they said unto them The LORD look upon you and judge because you have made our savour †Heb. to stink to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants to put a sword in their hands to slay us 22 And Moses returned unto the LORD and said Lord wherefore â—aâ—t thou so evil intreated this people why is it that thou hast sent me 23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name he hath done evil to this people †Heb. delivering thou so it delivered neither hast thou delivered thy people at all CHAP. VI. 1 God reneweth his promise by his name JEHOVAH 14 The geneadogy of Reuben 15 of Simeon 16 of Levi of whom came Moses and Aaron THen the LORD said unto Moses Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh for with a strong hand shall he let them go and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land 2 And God spake unto Moses and said unto him I am the LORD 3 And I appeared unto Abraham unto Isaac and unto Jacob by the name of God Almighty but by my name JEHOVAH was I not knowâ— to them 4 And I have also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan the land of their pilgrimage wherein they were strangers 5 And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel whom the Egyptians keep in bondage and I have remembred my covenant 6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel I am the LORD and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians and I will rid you out or their bondage and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm and with great judgements 7 And I will take you to me for a people and I will be to you a God and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians 8 And I will bring you in unto the land concerning the which I did †Heb. list up my hand swear to give it to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob and I will give it you for an heritage I am the LORD 9 ¶ And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel but they hearkned not unto Moses for †Heb. shâ—rtness or
field since the day that she left the land even till now 7 ¶ And Elisha came to Damascus and Ben-hadad the king of Syria was sick and it was told him saying The man of God is come hither 8 And the king said unto Hazael Take a present in thine hand and go meet the man of God and enquire of the LORD by him saying Shall I recover of this disease 9 So Hazael went to meet him and took a present †Heb. in his hand with him even of every good thing of Damascus fourty camels burden and came and stood before him and said Thy son Ben-hadad king of Syria hath sent me to the◠saying Shall I recover of this disease 10 And Elisha said unto him Go say unto him Thou mayest certainly recover howbeit the LORD hath shewed me that he shall surely die 11 And he settled his countenance †Heb. and see it stedfastly until he was ashamed and the man of God wept 12 And Hazael said Why weepeth my lord And he answered Because I know the evil that thou wilt do unto the children of Israel their strong holds wilt thou set on fire and their young men wilt thou slay with the sword and wilt dash their children and rip up their women with childe 13 And Hazael said But what is thy servant a dog that he should do this great thing And Elisha answered The LORD hath shewed me that thou shalt be king over Syria 14 So he departed from Elisha and came to his master who said to him What said Elisha to thee And he answered He told me that thou shouldest surely recover 15 And it came to pass on the morrow that he took a thick cloth and dipt it in water and spead it on his face so that he died and Hazael reigned in his stead 16 ¶ And in the fifth year of Joram the son of Ahab king of Israel Jehoshaphat being then king of Judah * 2 Chr. 21.4 Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah †Heb. reigned began to reign 17 Thirty and two years old was he when he began to reign and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem 18 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel as did the house of Ahab for the daughter of Ahab was his wife and he did evil in the sight of the LORD 19 Yet the LORD would not destroy Judah for David his servants sake * 2 Sam. ◠12 as he promised him to give him alway a †Heb. candle or lamp light and to his children 20 ¶ In his days Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah and made a king over themselves 21 So Joram went over to Zair and all the chariots with him and he rose by night and smote the Edomites which compassed him about and the captains of the chariots and the people fled into their tents 22 Yet Edom revolted from under the hand of Judah unto this day Then Libnah revolted at the same time 23 And the rest of the acts of Joram and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 24 And Joram slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David and * 2 Chr. 22.1 Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead 25 ¶ In the twelfth year of Joram the son of Ahah king of Israel did Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah begin to reign 26 Two and twenty years old was Ahaziah when he began to reign and he reigned one year in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Athaliah the daughter of Omri king of Israel 27 And he walked in the way of the house of Ahab and did evil in the sight of the LORD as did the house of Ahab for he was the son in law of the house of Ahab 28 ¶ And he went with Joram the son of Ahab to the war against Hazael king of Syria in Ramoth-gilead and the Syrians wounded Joram 29 And king Joram went back to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds †Heb. wherewith in Syrians had wounded which the Syrians had given him at Ramah when he sought against Hazael king of Syria and Ahaziah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Joram the son of Ahab in Jezreel because he was †Heb. wounded sick CHAP. IX 1 Elisha sendeth a young prophet with instructions to anoint Jehu at Ramoth-gilead 4 The prophet having done his message fleeth 11 Jehu being made king by the souldiers killeth Joram in the field of Naboth 27 Ahaziah is slain at Guy and buried at Jerusalem 30 Proud Jezebel is thrown down out of a window and eaten by dogs ANd Elisha the prophet called one of the children of the prophets and said unto him Gird up thy loyns and take this box of oyl in thine hand and go to Ramoth-gilead 2 And when thou comest thither look out there Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi and go in and make him arise up from among his brethren and carry him to an †Heb. chamber in a chamber inner chamber 3 Then * 1 King 19.16 take the box of oyl and pour it on his head and say Thus saith the LORD I have anointed thee king over Israel then open the door and flee and tarry not 4 ¶ So the young man even the young man the prophet went to Ramoth-gilead 5 And when he came behold the captains of the host were sitting and he said I have an errand to thee O captain And Jehu said Unto which of all us And he said To thee O captain 6 And he arose and went into the house and he poured the oyl on his head and said unto him Thus saith the LORD God of Israel I have anointed thee king over the people of the LORD even over Israel 7 And thou shalt smite the house of Ahab thy master that I may avenge the bloud of my servants the prophets and the bloud of all the servants of the LORD * 1 King 21 1◠at the hand of Jezebel 8 For the whole house of Ahab shall perish and * 1 Kin. 14.10 21.21 I will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall and him that is shut up and left in Israel 9 And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of * 1 Kin. 14.10 21.22 Jeroboam the son of Nebat and like the house of * 1 Kin. 16.3 Baasha the son of Ahijah 10 And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the portion of Jezreel and there shall be none to bury her And he opened the door and fled 11 ¶ Then Jehu came forth to the servants of his lord and one said unto him Is all well wherefore came this mad fellow to thee And he said unto them Ye know the man and his communication 12 And they said It is false tell us now And he said Thus and thus spake he to me saying Thus
