XLVII 1 Joseph presenteth five of his brethren 7 and his father before Pharaoh 11 He giveth them habitation and maintenance 13 He getteth all the Egyptians money 16 their cattel 18 their lands to Pharaoh 22 The priests land was not bought 23 He letteth the land to them for a fifth part 28 Jacobs age 29 He sweareth Joseph to bury him with his fathers THen Joseph came and told Pharaoh and said My father and my brethren and their flocks and their herd and all that they have are come out of the land of Canaan and behold they are in the land of Goshen 2 And he took some of his brethren even five men and presented them unto Pharaoh 3 And Pharaoh said unto his brethren What is your occupation And they said unto Pharaoh Thy servants are shepherds both we and also our fathers 4 They said moreover unto Pharaoh For to sojourn in the land are we come for thy servants have no pasture for their flocks for the ●●mine is sore in the land of Canaan now therefore we pray thee let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen 5 And Pharaoh spake unto Joseph saying Thy father and thy brethren are come unto thee 6 The land of Egypt is before thee in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell in the land of Goshen let them dwell and it thou knowest any man of activity amongst them then

IV. 1 Moses rod is turned into a serpent 6 His band is leprous 10 He is lotb to be sent 14 Aaron is appointed to assist him 18 Moses departeth from Jethro 21 Gods message to Pharaob 24 Zipporah circumciseth her son 27 Aaron is sent to next Moses 31 The people beleeveth them ANd Moses answered and said But behold they will not beleeve me nor hearken unto my voice for they will say The LORD hath not appeared unto thee 2 And the LORD said unto him What is that in thine hand And he said A rod. 3 And he said Cast it on the ground and he cast it on the ground and it became a serpent and Moses fled from before it 4 And the LORD said unto Moses Put forth thy hand and take it by the tail And he put forth his hand and caught it and it became a rod in his hand 5 That they may beleeve that the LORD God of their fathers the God of Abraham the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob hath appeared unto thee 6 ¶ And the LORD said furthermore unto him Put now thine hand into thy bosome and he put his hand into his bosome and when he took it out behold his hand was leprous as snow 7 And he said Put thine hand into thy bosome again and he put his hand into his bosome again and plucked it out of his bosome and behold it was turned again as his other flesh 8 And it shall come to pass if they will not beleeve thee neither hearken to the voice of the first signe that they will beleeve the voice of the latter signe 9 And it shall come to pass if they will not beleeve also these two signs neither hearken unto thy voice that thou shalt take of the water of the river and pour it upon the dry-land and the water which thou takest out of the river † Heb. shall be and shall be shall become bloud upon the dry-land 10 ¶ And Moses said unto the LORD O my Lord I am not † Heb. a man of words eloquent neither † Heb. since yest●rday nor since the third day her tofore nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant but I am slow of speech and of a slow tongue 11 And the LORD said unto him Who hath made mans mouth or who maketh the dumb or deas or the seeing or the blinde have not I the LORD 12 Now therefore go and I will be * Mat. 10 1● Mat. 1.11 Luk. 12.11 with thy mouth and teach thee what thou shalt say 13 And he said O my Lord send I pray thee by the hand of him wh●m thou ‖ Or shouldest wilt send 14 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses and he said Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother I know that he can speak well And also behold he cometh forth to meet thee and when he s●●th 15 And thou shalt speak unto him and put words in his mouth and I will be with thy mouth and with his mouth and will teach you what ye shall do 16 And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people and he shall be even he shall be to thee in stead of a mouth and * Ch. 7.1 thou shalt be to him in stead of God 17 And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand wherewith thou shalt do signs 18 ¶ And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father in law and said unto him Let me go I pray thee and return unto my brethren which art in Egypt and see wh●ther they be yet alive And Jethro said to Moses Go in peace 19 And the LORD said unto Moses in Midian Go return into Egypt for all the men are dead which fought thy life 20 And Moses took his wife and his sons and set them upon an a●s and he returned to the land of Egypt And Moses took the rod of God in his hand 21 And the LORD said unto Moses When thou go●st to return into Egypt see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh which I have put in thine hand but I will harden his heart that he shall not let the people go
22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh Thus saith the LORD Israel is my son even my first-born 23 And I say unto thee Let my son go that he may serve me and it thou refuse to let him go behold I will slay thy son even thy first born 24 ¶ And it came to pass by the way in the inn that the LORD met him and sought to kill him 25 Then Zipporah took a sharp ‖ Or knife stone and cut off the sore-skin of her son and † Heb. made it touth cast it at his feet and said Sarely a bloudy husband art thou to me 26 So he let him go then she said A bloudy husband thou art because of the circumcision 27 ¶ And the LORD said to Aaron Go into the wilderness to meet Moses And he went and met him in the mount of God and kis●●● him 28 And Moses told Aaron all the words of the LORD who had sent him and all the signs which he had commanded him 29 ¶ And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel 30 And Aaron spake all the words which the LORD had spoken unto Moses and did the signs in the sight of the people 31 And the people beseeved and when they heard that the LORD had vinted the children of Israel and that he had looked upon their affliction then they bowed their heads and worshipped CHAP. V. 1 Pharaoh ebideth Moses and Aaron for their message 5 He increaseth the Israelites task 15 He checketh their complaints 19 They cry out upon Moses and Aaron 22 Moses complaineth to God ANd afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Let my people go that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness 2 And Pharaoh said Who is the LORD that I should obey his voice to let Israel go I know not the LORD neither will I let Israel go 3 And they said * Ch. 3. ●8 The God of the Hebrews hath met with us let us go we pray thee three days journey into the desert and sacrifice unto the LORD our God lest he fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword 4 And the king of Egypt said unto them Wherefore do ye Moses and Aaron let the people from their works get you unto your burdens 5 And Pharaoh said Behold the people of the land now are many and you make them rest from their burdens 6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the task-masters of the people and their officers saying 7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick as heretofore let them go and gather straw for themselves 8 And the tale of the bricks which they did make heretofore you shall lay upon them you shall not diminish ought thereof for they be idle therefore they cry saying Let us go and sacrifice to our God 9 † Heb. let the work ●e heavy upon the men Let there more work be laid upon the men that they may labour therein and let them not regard vain words 10 ¶ And the task-masters of the people went out and their officers and they spake to the people saying Thus saith Pharaoh I will not give you straw 11 Go ye get you straw where you can find it yet not ought of your work shall be diminished 12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw 13 And the task-masters hasted them saying Fulfil your works your † Heb. a matter of a day in bi● day daily tasks as when there was straw 14 And the officers of the children of Israel which Pharaohs task-masters had set over them were beaten and demanded Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day as heretofore 15 ¶ Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh saying Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants 16 There is no straw given unto thy servant and they say to us Make brick and behold thy servants are beaten but the fault is in thine own people 17 But he said Ye are idle ye are idle therefore ye say Let us go and do sacrifice to the LORD 18 Go therefore now and work for there shall no straw be given you yet shall ye deliver the tale of bricks 19 And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case after it was said Ye shall not minish ought from your bricks of your daily task 20 ¶ And they met Moses and Aaron who stood in the way as they came forth from Pharaoh 21 And they said unto them The LORD look upon you and judge because you have made our savour † Heb. to stink to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants to put a sword in their hands to slay us 22 And Moses returned unto the LORD and said Lord wherefore ●a●t thou so evil intreated this people why is it that thou hast sent me 23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name he hath done evil to this people † Heb. delivering thou so it delivered neither hast thou delivered thy people at all CHAP. VI. 1 God reneweth his promise by his name JEHOVAH 14 The geneadogy of Reuben 15 of Simeon 16 of Levi of whom came Moses and Aaron THen the LORD said unto Moses Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh for with a strong hand shall he let them go and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land 2 And God spake unto Moses and said unto him I am the LORD 3 And I appeared unto Abraham unto Isaac and unto Jacob by the name of God Almighty but by my name JEHOVAH was I not know● to them 4 And I have also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan the land of their pilgrimage wherein they were strangers 5 And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel whom the Egyptians keep in bondage and I have remembred my covenant 6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel I am the LORD and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians and I will rid you out or their bondage and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm and with great judgements 7 And I will take you to me for a people and I will be to you a God and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians 8 And I will bring you in unto the land concerning the which I did † Heb. list up my hand swear to give it to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob and I will give it you for an heritage I am the LORD 9 ¶ And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel but they hearkned not unto Moses for † Heb. sh●rtness or
straitness anguish of spirit and for cruel bondage 10 And the LORD spake unto Moles saying 11 Go in speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt that he let the children of Israel go out of his land 12 And Moses spake before the LORD saying Behold the children of Israel have not hearkned unto me how then shall Pharaoh hear me who am of uncircumcised lips 13 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron and gave them a charge unto the children of Israel and unto Pharaoh king of Egypt to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt 14 ¶ These be the heads of their fathers houses * Gen. 46.9 1 Chr. 5.3 The sons of Reuben the first born of Israel Hanoch and Pallu Hezron and Carmi these be the families of Reuben 15 * 1 Chr. 4.24 And the sons of Simeon Jemuel and Jamin and Ohad and Jachin and Zohar and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman these are the families of Simeon 16 ¶ And these are the names of * Num. 3. ●● 1 Chr. 6.1 the sons of Levi according to their generations Gershon and Kohath and Merari And the years of the life of Levi were an hundred thirty and seven years 17 The sons of Gershon Libni and Shimi according to their families 18 And * Num. 26.57 1 Chr. 6.2 the sons of Kohath Amram and Izhar and Hebron and Uzziel And the years of the life of Kohath were an hundred thirty and three years 19 And the sons of Merari Mahali and Mushi these are the families of Levi according to their generations 20 And * Ch. 2.2 Num. 26.59 Amram took him Jochebed his fathers sister to wife and she bare him Aaron and Moses And the years of the life of Amram were an hundred and thirty and seven years 21 ¶ And the sons of Izhar Korah and Nepheg and Zichri 22 And the sons of Uzziel Mishael and Eizaphan and Zithri 23 And Aaron took him Elisheba daughter of Amminadab sister of Naashon to wife she bare him Nadab Abihu Eleazar and I thamar 24 And the sons of Korah A●lir and Elkanah and Abiasaph these are the families of the Korhites 25 And Eleazar Aarons son took him one of the daughters of Putiel to wife and * Num. 25.11 she bare him Phineas these are the heads of the fathers of the Levites according to their families 26 These are that Aaron and Moses to whom the LORD said Bring out the children of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their armies 27 These are they which spake to Pharaoh king of Egypt to bring out the children of Israel from Egypt these are that Moses and Aaron 28 ¶ And it came to pass on the day when the LORD spake unto Moes in the land of Egypt 29 That the LORD spake unto Moses saying I am the LORD speak thou unto Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say unto thee 30 And Moses said before the LORD Behold I am of uncircumcised lips and how shall Pharaoh hearken unto me CHAP. VII 1 Moses is encouraged to go to Pharaoh 7 His a●e 8 His rod is turned into a serpent 11 The sorcerers do the like 13 Pharaohs heart is hardned 14 Gods massage to Pharaoh 19 the river is turned into bloud ANd the LORD said unto Moses See I have made thee a god to Pharaoh and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet 2 Thou shalt speak all that I command thee and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh that he send the children of Israel out of his land 3 And I will harden Pharaohs heart and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt 4 But Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you that I may lay my hand upon Egypt and bring forth mine armies and my people the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by great judgements 5 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD when I stretch forth mine hand up●● Egypt and bring out the children of Israel from among them 6 And Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them so did they 7 And Moses was fourscore years old and Aaron fourscore and three years old when they spake unto Pharaoh 8 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 9 When Pharaoh shall speak unto you saying Shew a miracle for you then thou shalt say unto Aaron Take thy rod and ca●t it before Pharaoh and it shall become a serpent 10 ¶ And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh and they did so as the LORD had commanded and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants and it became a serpent 11 Then Pharaoh also called the wifemen and the sorcerers now the magicians of Egypt they also did in like manner with their inchantments 12 For they cast down every man his rod and they became serpents but Aarons rod twallowed up their rods 13 And he hardned Pharaohs heart that he hearkned not unto them as the LORD had said 14 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Pharaohs heart is hardned he refuseth to let the people go 15 Get thee unto Pharaoh in the morning 〈◊〉 he goeth out unto the water and thou shalt stand by the rivers brink against he come and the rod which was turned to a serpent shalt thou take into thine hand 16 And thou shalt say unto him The LORD God of the Hebrews hath sent me unto thee saying Let my people go that they may serve me in the wilderness and behold hitherto thou wouldest not hear 17 Thus saith the LORD In this thou shalt know that I am the LORD behold I will smite with the ●od that is in mine hand upon the waters which are in the river and they shall be turned to bloud 18 And the fish that is in the river shall die and the river shall stink and the Egyptians shall lothe to drink of the water of the river 19 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses Say unto Aaron Take thy rod and stretch out thine hand upon the waters of Egypt upon their streams upon their rivers and upon their ponds and upon all their † Heb gathering of their waters pools of water that they may become bloud and that there may be bloud throughout all the land of Egypt both in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone 20 And Moses and Aaron did so as the LORD commanded and he * Ch. 17.5 lift up the rod and smote the waters that were in the river in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants and all the * Ps 78.44 waters that were in the river were turned into bloud 21 And the fish that was in the river died and the river stunk and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river and there was bloud throughout all the land of Egypt 22 * Wisd 17.7 And the magicians of Egypt did so with their inchantments and Pharaohs heart was hardned
neither did he hearken unto them as the LORD had said 23 And Pharaoh turned and went into his house neither did he set his heart to this also 24 And all the Egyptians digged round about the river for water to drink for they could not drink of the water of the river 25 And seven dayes were fulfilled after that the LORD had smitten the river CHAP. VIII 1 Frogs are sent 8 Pharaoh sueth to Moses 12 and Moses by prayer removeth them away 16 The dust is turned into lice which the magicians could not do 20 The swarms of flies 25 Pharaoh inclineth to let the people go 32 but yet is hardened ANd the LORD spake unto Moses Go unto Pharaoh and say unto him Thus saith the LORD Let my people go that they may serve me 2 And if thou refuse to let them go behold I will smite all thy borders with frogs 3 And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly which shall go up and come into thine house and into thy bed-chamber and upon thy bed and into the house of thy servants and upon thy people and into thine ovens and into thy ‖ Or dough kneading-trough● 4 And the frogs shall come up both on thee and upon thy people and upon all thy servants 5 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses Say unto Aaron Stretch forth thine ha●d with thy rod over the streams over the rivers and over the ponds and cause frogs to come up upon the land of Egypt 6 And Aa●on stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt 7 * Wi●● 17.7 And the Magicians did so with their inchantments and brought up frogs upon the land of Egypt 8 ¶ Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron and said Intreat the LORD that he may take away the frogs from me and from my people and I will let the people go that they may do sacrifice unto the LORD 9 And Moses said unto Pharaoh ‖ Or have this bonour over me c. Glory over me ‖ Or arainst when when shall I intreat for thee and for thy servants and for thy people † Heb. to cut off to destroy the frogs from thee and thy houses that they may remain in the river onely 10 And he said ‖ Or against to morrow To morrow And he said Be it according to thy word that thou mayest know that there is none like unto the LORD our God 11 And the frogs shall depart from thee and from thy houses and from thy servants and from thy people they shall remain in the river onely 12 And Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh and Moses cried unto the LORD because of the frogs which he had brought against Pharaoh 13 And the LORD did according to the word of Moses and the frogs died out of the houses out of the villages and out of the fields 14 And they gathered them together upon heaps and the land stank 15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite he hardned his heart and hearkned not unto them as the LORD had said 16 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Say unto Aaron Stretch out thy rod and smite the dust of the land that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt 17 And they did so for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod and smote the dust of the earth and it became lice in man and in bea●t all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt 18 And the magicians did so with their inchantment● to bring forth lice but they could not so there were lice upon man and upon beast 19 Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh This is the finger of God and Pharaoh● heart was hardned and he hearkned not unto them as the LORD had said 20 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Rise up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh ●o he cometh forth to the water and say unto him Thus saith the LORD Let my people go that they may serve me 21 Else if thou wilt not let my people go behold I will send ‖ Or a mixture of noysome c●asts c. swarms of flies upon thee and upon thy servants and upon thy people and into thy houses and the houses of the Egyptians shall be ●ull of swarms of flies and also the ground whereon they are 22 And I will sever in that day the la●d of Goshen in which my people dwell that no swarms of flies shall be there to the end thou mayest know that I am the LORD in the mid●t of the earth 23 And I will put † Heb. a redemption a division between my people and thy people ‖ Or by to morrow to morrow shall this signe be 24 And the LORD did so●and * Wisd 16. ● there came a grievous swarm of flies into the house of Pharaoh and into his servants houses and into all the land of Egypt the land was ‖ Or destroyed corrupted by reason of the swarm of flies 25 ¶ And Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron and said Go ye sacri●ice to your God in the land 26 And Moses said It is not meet so to do for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God Lo shall we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes and will they not stone us 27 We will go three dayes journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as * Ch. 3. ●8 he shall command us 28 And Pharaoh said I will let you go that ye may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness onely you shall not go very far away intreat for me 29 And Moses said Behold I go out from thee and I will intreat the LORD that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh from hi● servants and from his people to morrow but let not Pharaoh deal deceitfully any more in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD 30 And Moses went out from Pharaoh and intreated the LORD 31 And the LORD did according to the word of Moses and he removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh from his servants and from his people there remained not one 32 And Pharaoh hardned his heart at this time also neither would he let the people go CHAP. IX 1 The murrain of beasts 8 The plague of boyls and blains 12 The message about the hail 22 The plague of hail 27 Pharaoh sueth to Moses 35 but yet is hardned THen the LORD said unto Moses Go in unto Pharaoh and tell him Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews Let my people go that they may serve me 2 For if thou refuse to let them go and wilt hold them still 3 Behold the hand of the LORD is upon thy cattel which is in the field upon the horses upon the asses upon the camels upon the oxen and upon the sheep there shall be
a very grievous murrain 4 And the LORD shall sever between the cattel of Israel and the cattel of Egypt and there shall nothing die of all that is the childrens of Israel 5 And the LORD appointed a set time saying To morrow the LORD shall do this thing in the land 6 And the LORD did that thing on the morrow and all the cattel of Egypt died but of the cattel of the children of Israel died not one 7 And Pharaoh sent and behold there was not one of the cattel of the Israelites dead And the heart of Pharaoh was hardned and he did not let the people go 8 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses and unto Aaron Take to you handfuls of ashes of the furnace and let Moses sprinkle it towards the heaven in the sight of Pharaoh 9 And it shall become small dust in all the land of Egypt and shall he a boyl breaking forth with blains upon man and upon beast throughout all the land of Egypt 10 And they took ashes of the furnace and stood before Pharaoh and Moses sprinkled it up toward heaven and it became a boyl breaking forth with blains upon man and upon beast 11 And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boyl for the boyl was upon the magicians and upon all the Egyptians 12 And the LORD hardned the heart of Pharaoh and he hearkned not unto them * Chap. 4.21 as the LORD had spoken unto Moses 13 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Rise up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh and lay unto him Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews Let my people go that they may serve me 14 For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart and upon thy servants and upon thy people that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth 15 For now I will stretch out my hand that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence and thou shalt be cut off from the earth 16 And in very deed for * Rom. 9. ●7 this cause have I † Heb. made thee stand raised thee up for to shew in thee my power and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth 17 As yet exalted thou thyself against my people that thou wilt not let them go 18 Behold to morrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very grievous hail such as hath not been in Egypt since the foundation thereof even until now 19 Send therefore now and gather thy cattel and all that thou hast in the field for upon every man and beast which shall be found in the field and shall not be brought home the hail shall come down upon them and they shall die 20 He that feared the word of the LORD amongst the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattel flee into the houses 21 And he that † Heb. set not his ●eart unto regarded not the word of the LORD left his servants and his cattel in the field 22 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Stretch forth thine hand toward heaven that there may be hail in all the land of Egypt upon man and upon beast upon every herb of the field throughout the land of Egypt 23 And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven and the LORD sent thunder and hail and the fire ran along upon the ground and the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt 24 So there was hail and fire mingled with the hail very grievous such as there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation 25 And the hail smote throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field both man and beast and the hail smote every herb of the field and brake every tree of the field 26 Onely in the land of Goshen where the children of Israel were was there no hail 27 ¶ And Pharaoh sent and called for Moses and Aaron and said unto them I have sinned this time the LORD is righteous and I and my people are wicked 28 Intreat the LORD for it is enough that there be no more † Heb. voices of God mighty thundrings and hail and I will let you go and ye shall stay no longer 29 And Moses said unto him Assoon as I am gone out of the city I will spread abroad my hands unto the LORD and the thunder shall cease neither shall there be any more hail that thou mayest know how that the * Psal 24.1 earth is the LORDS 30 But as for thee and thy servants I know that ye will not yet fear the LORD God 31 And the flax and the barley was smitten for the barley was in the ear and the ●●ax was bolled 32 But the wheat and the rie were not smitten for they were † Heb. bidden or dark not grown up 33 And Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh and spread abroad his hands unto the LORD and the thunders and hail ceased and the rain was not poured upon the earth 34 And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunders were ceased he sinned yet more and hardned his heart he and his servants 35 And the heart of Pharaoh was hardned neither would he let the children of Israel go as the LORD had spoken † Heb. by the hand of Moses by Moses CHAP. X. 1 God threatneth to send locusts 7 Pharaoh moved by his servants inclineth to let the Israelites go 12 The plague of the locusts 16 Pharaoh sueth to Moses 21 The plague of darkness 24 Pharaoh sueth unto Moses 27 but yet is hardned ANd the LORD said unto Moses Go in unto Pharaoh * Chap 4.21 for I have hardned his heart and the heart of his servants that I might shew these my signs before him 2 And that thou mayest tell in the ears of thy son and of thy sons son what things I have wrought in Egypt and my signs which I have done amongst them that ye may know how that I am the LORD 3 And Moses and Aaron came in unto Pharaoh and said unto him Thus saith the LORD God o● the Hebrews How long wilt thou refuse to humble thy self before me Let my people go that they may serve me 4 Else if thou refuse to let my people go behold to morrow will I bring the * Wisd 16.9 locusts into thy coast 5 And they shall cover the † Heb. eye face of the earth that one cannot be able to see the earth and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped which remaineth unto you from the hail and shall eat every tree which groweth for you out of the field 6 And they shall fill thy houses and the houses of all thy servants the houses of all the Egyptians which neither thy fathers nor thy fathers fathers have seen since the day that they were upon the earth unto this day And he
turned himself and went out from Pharaoh 7 And Pharaohs servants said unto him How long shall this man be a snare unto us Let the men go that they may serve the LORD their God Knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed 8 And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh and he said unto them Go serve the LORD your God but † Heb. who and who c. who are they that shall go 9 And Moses said We will go with our young and with our old with our sons and with our daughters with our flocks and with our herds will we go for we must hold a feast unto the LORD 10 And he said unto them Let the LORD be so with you as I will let you go and your little ones look to it for evil is before you 11 Not so go now ye that are men and serve the LORD for that you did desire And they were driven out from Pharaohs presence 12 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Stretch out thine hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts that they may come up upon the land of Egypt and eat every herb of the land even all that the hail hath left 13 And Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt and the LORD brought an east-wind upon the land all that day and all that night and when it was morning the east-wind brought the locusts 14 And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt and rested in all the coasts of Egypt very grievous were they before them there were no such locusts as they neither after them shall be such 15 For they covered the face of the whole earth so that the land was darkned and they did eat every herb of the land and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left and there remained not any green thing in the trees or in the herbs of the field through all the land of Egypt 16 ¶ Then Pharaoh † Heb. hastned to call called for Moses and Aaron in haste and he he said I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you 17 Now therefore forgive I pray thee my sin onely this once and intreat the LORD your God that he may take away from me this death onely 18 And he went out from Pharaoh and intreated the LORD 19 And the LORD turned a mighty strong west-wind which took away the locusts and † Heb. fastned cast them into the Red sea there remained not one locust in all the coasts of Egypt 20 But the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart so that he would not let the children of Israel go 21 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Stretch out thine hand toward heaven that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt † Heb. that one may feel darkness even darkness which may be felt 22 And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days 23 They saw not one another neither rose any from his place for three days * Wisd 18.1 but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings 24 ¶ And Pharaoh called unto Moses and said Go ye serve the LORD onely let your flocks and your herds be stayed let your little ones also go with you 25 And Moses said Thou must give † Heb. into our hands us also sacrifices and burnt-offerings that we may sacrifice unto the LORD our God 26 Our cattel also shall go with us there shall not an hoof be left behinde for thereof must we take to serve the LORD our God and we know not with what we must serve the LORD until we come thither 27 ¶ But the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart and he would not let them go 28 And Pharaoh said unto him Get thee from me take heed to thy self see my face no more for in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die 29 And Moses said Thou hast spoken well I will see thy face again no more CHAP. XI 1 Gods message to the Israelites to borrow jewels of their neighbours 4 Moses threatneth Pharaoh with the death of the first-born ANd the LORD said unto Moses Yet will I bring one plague more upon Pharaph and upon Egypt afterwards he will let you go hence when he shall let you go he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether 2 Speak now in the ears of the people and let every man borrow of his neighbour and every woman of her neighbour * Chap. ● 22 and 12 35. jewels of silver and jewels of gold 3 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians Moreover the man * Ecclu● 45.1 Moses was very great in the land of Egypt in the sight of Pharaohs servants and in the sight of the people 4 And Moses said Thus saith the LORD * Chap. 12.29 About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt 5 And all the first-born in the land of Egypt shall die from the first-born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne even unto the first-born of the maid servant that is behinde the mill and all the first-born of beasts 6 And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt such as there was none like it nor shall be like it any more 7 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue against man or beast that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel 8 And all these thy servants shall come down unto me and bow down themselves unto me saying Get thee out and all the people † Heb. that is at thy feet that follow thee and after that I will go out and he went out from Pharaoh in † Heb. heat of anger a great anger 9 And the LORD said unto Moses Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt 10 And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh and the LORD hardned Pharaohs heart so that he would not let the children of Israel go out of his land CHAP. XII 1 The beginning of the year is changed 3 The pass-over is instituted 11 The rice of the pass-over 15Vnleavened bread 29 The first-born are slain 31 The Israelites are driven out of the land 37 They come to Succoth 43 The ordinance of the pass-over ANd the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt saying 2 This moneth shall be unto you the beginning of moneths it shall be the first moneth of the year to you 3 ¶ Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel saying In the tenth day of this moneth they shall take to them every man a ‖ Or kid lamb according to the house of their fathers a lamb for an house 4 And if the ho●●hold be too little for the lamb let him his neighbour next unto his
house take it according to the number of the souls every man according to his eating shal make your count for the lamb 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish a male † Heb. son of a year of the first year ye shall take it out from the sheep or from the goats 6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same moneth and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it † Heb. between the two evenings in the evening 7 And they shall take of the bloud and strike it on the two side-posts and on the upper door-post of the houses wherein they shall eat it 8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night rost with fire and unleavened bread and with bitter herbs they shall eat it 9 Eat not of it raw nor sodden at all with water but rost with fire his head with his legs and with the purtenance thereof 10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire 11 ¶ And thus shall ye eat it with your loyns girded your shoes on your feet and your staff in your hand and ye shall eat it in haste it is the LORDS pass-over 12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night and will smite all the first-born in the land of Egypt both man and beast and against all the ‖ Or princes gods of Egypt I will execute judgement I am the LORD 13 And the bloud shall be to you for a token upon the houses where you are and when I see the bloud I will pass over you and the plague shall not he upon you † Heb. for a destruction to destroy you when I smite the land of Egypt 14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial and you shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations you shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever 15 Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses for whosoever eateth leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day that soul shall be cut off from Israel 16 And in the first day there shall be an holy convocation and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to you no manner of work shall be done in them save that which every † Heb. soul man must eat that onely may be done of you 17 And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread for in this self-same day have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations by an ordinance for ever 18 ¶ * Levit. 23.5 Numb 28.16 In the first moneth on the fourteenth day of the moneth at even ye shall eat unleavened bread until the one and twentieth day of the moneth at even 19 Seven days shall there be no leaven sound in your houses for whosoever eateth that which is leavened even that soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel whether he be a stranger or born in the land 20 Ye shall eat nothing leavened in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread 21 ¶ Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel and said unto them Draw out and take you a ‖ Or kid lamb according to your families and kill the pass-over 22 * Heb. 11.28 And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the bloud that is in the bason and strike the lintel and the two side-posts with the bloud that is in the bason and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning 23 For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians and when he seeth the bloud upon the lintel and on the two side-posts the LORD will pass over the door and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to sin to you 24 And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever 25 And it shall come to pass when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you according as he hath promised that ye shall keep this service 26 * Josh 4.6 And it shall come to pass when your children shall say unto you What mean you by this service 27 That ye shall say It is the sacrifice of the LORDS pass-over who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when he smote the Egyptians and delivered our houses And the people bo●ed the head and worshipped 28 And the children of Israel went away and did as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron so did they 29 ¶ * Chap. 11.4 And it come to pass that at midnight the LORD smote all the first-born in the land of Egypt * Wisd 18.11 from the first-born of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the first-born of the captive that was in the † Heb. house of the pit dungeon and all the first-born of cattel 30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night he and all his servants and all the Egyptians and there was a great cry in Egypt for there was not a house where there was not one dead 31 ¶ And he called for Moses and Aaron by night and said Rise up and get you forth from amongst my people both you and the children of Israel and go serve the LORD as ye have said 32 Also take your flocks and your herds as ye have said and be gone and bless me also 33 And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people that they might send them out of the land in haste for they said We be all dead men 34 And the people took their dough before it was leavened their ‖ Or dough kneading-troughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders 35 And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses and they borrowed of the Egyptians * Chap. 3.22 and 11.2 jewels of silver and jewels of gold and raiment 36 And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians so that they lent unto them such things as they required and they spoiled the Egyptians 37 ¶ And * Numb 33.3 the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth about six hundred thousand on foot that were men besides children 38 And † Heb. a great mixture a mixed multitude went up also with them and flocks and herds even very much cattel 39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough which they brought forth out of Egypt for it was not leavened because they were thrust out of Egypt and could not tarry neither had they prepared for themselves any victual 40 ¶ Now the sojourning of the children of Israel who dwelt in Egypt was * Gen. 17.13 Act. 7.6 Gal. 3.17 four hundred and thirty years 41 And it
came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years even the self-same day it came to pass that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt 42 It is † Heb. a night of observations a night to be much observed unto the LORD for bringing them out from the land of Egypt this is that night of the LORD to be observed of all the children of Israel in their generations 43 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron This is the ordinance of the pass-over there shall no stranger eat thereof 44 But every mans servant that is bought for money when thou hast circumcised him then shall he eat thereof 45 A foreiner and an hired servant shall not eat thereof 46 In one house shall it be eaten thou shalt not carry forth ought of the flesh abroad out of the house * Num. 9.12 John 19.36 neither shall ye break a bone thereof 47 All the congregation of Israel shall † Heb. do it keep it 48 And when a stranger shall sojourn with thee and will keep the pass-over to the LORD let all his males be circumcised and then let him come near and keep it and he shall be as one that is born in the land for no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof 49 One law shall be to him that is home-born and unto the stranger that sojourneth among you 50 Thus did all the children of Israel as the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron so did they 51 ●nd it came to pass the self-same day that the LORD did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies CHAP. XIII 1 The first-born are sanctified to God 3 The memorial of the pass-over is commanded 11 The firstlings of beasts are set apart 17 The Israelites go out of Egypt and carry Josephs bones with them 20 They come to Etham 21 God guideth them by a pillar of a cloud and a pillar of fire ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 * Chap. 22 29. and 34.19 Lev. 27.26 Num. 3.13 and 8.16 Luk. 2.23 Sanctifie unto me all the first-born whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel both of man of beast it is mine 3 ¶ And Moses said unto the people Remember this day in which ye came out from Egypt out of the house of † Heb. servants bondage for by strength of hand the LORD brought you out from this place there shall no leavened bread be eaten 4 This day came ye out in the moneth Abib 5 ¶ And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Hivites and the Jebusites which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee a land flowing with milk and honey that thou shalt keep this service in this moneth 6 Seven days shalt thou eat unleavened bread and in the seventh day shall be a feast to the LORD 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten seven days and there shall no leavened bread be seen with thee neither shall there be leaven seen with thee in all thy quarters 8 ¶ And thou shalt shew thy son in the day saying This is done because of that which the LORD did unto me when I came forth out of Egypt 9 And it shall be for a signe unto thee upon thine hand and for a memorial between thine eyes that the LORDS law may be in thy mouth for with a strong hand hath the LORD brought thee out of Egypt 10 Thou shalt therefore keep this ordinance in his season from year to year 11 ¶ And it shall be when the LORD shall bring thee into the land of the Canaanites as he sware unto thee and to thy fathers and shall give it thee 12 * Chap. 22.29 and 34.19 Ezek. 44.30 That thou shalt † Heb. cause to pass over set apart unto the LORD all that openeth the matrix and every firstling that cometh of a beast which thou hast the males shall be the LORDS 12 And every firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a ‖ Or kid lamb and if thou wilt not redeem it then thou shalt break his neck and all the first-born of man amongst thy children shalt thou redeem 14 ¶ And it shall be when thy son asketh thee † Heb. to morrow in time to come saying What is this that thou shalt say unto him By strength of hand the LORD brought us out from Egypt from the house of bondage 15 And it came to pass when Pharaoh would hardly let us go that the LORD slew all the first-born in the land of Egypt both the first-born of man and the first-born of beasts therefore I sacrifice to the LORD all that openeth the matrix being males but all the first-born of my children I redeem 16 And it shall be for a token upon thine hand and for frontlets between thine eyes for by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt 17 ¶ And it came to pass when Pharaoh had let the people go that God led them not through the way of the land of the Philistines although that was near for God said Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war and they return to Egypt 18 But God led the people about through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea and the children of Israel went up ‖ Or by five in a rank harnessed out of the land of Egypt 19 And Moses took the hones of Joseph with him for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel saying * Gen. 50.25 Josh 24.32 God will surely visit you and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you 20 ¶ And * Numb 32.6 they took their journey from Saccoth and encamped in Etham in the edge of the wilderness 21 And * Numb 1● 14 Deut. 1. ●2 Neh. ● 19 Psal ●8 14 1 Cor. 10 1. the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud to lead them the way and by nigth in a pillar of sire to give them light to go by day and night 22 He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day nor the pillar of sire by night from before the people .. XIV 1 God instructeth the Israelites in their journey 5 Pharaoh pursueth after them 10 The Israelites murmure 13 Moses comforteth them 15 God instructeth Moses 19 The cloud removeth behinde the camp 21 The Israelites pass through the Red sea 23 which drowneth the Egyptians ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 Speak unto the children of Israel that they turn and encamp before * Numb ● 7 Pi-hahiroth between Migdol and the sea over against Baal-zephon before it shall ye encamp by the sea 3 For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel They are intangred in the land the wilderness hath shut them in 4 And I will harden Pharaohs heart that he shall follow after them and I
them 21 And they gathered it every morning every man according to his eating and when the sun waxed hot it melted 22 ¶ And it came to pass that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread two omers for one man and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses 23 And he said unto them This is that which the LORD hath said To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD bake that which ye will bake to day and seethe that ye will seethe and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning 24 And they laid it up t●ll the morning as Moses bade and it did not stink neither was there any worm therein 25 And Moses said Eat that to day for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD to day ye shall not finde it in the field 26 Six days ye shall gather it but on the seventh day which is the sabbath in it there shall be none 27 ¶ And it came to pass that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather and they found none 28 And the LORD said unto Moses How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws 29 See for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days abide ye every man in his place let no man go out of his place on the seventh day 30 So the people rested on the seventh day 31 And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna and it was like coriander-seed white and the taste of it was like wasers made with honey 32 ¶ And Moses said This is the thing which the LORD commandeth Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations that they may see the bread wherewith I have fed you in the wilderness when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt 33 And Moses said unto Aaron Take a pot and put an omer full of manna therein and lay it up before the LORD to be kept for your generations 34 As the LORD commanded Moses so Aaron laid it up before the testimony to be kept 35 And the children of Israel did eat manna fourty years * Jos 5.12 Neh. 9.15 until they came to a land inhabited they did eat manna until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan 36 Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah CHAP. XVII 1 The people murmure for water at Rephidim 5 God sendeth them for water to the rock in Horeb. 8 Awalek is overcome by the holding up of Moses hands 15 Moses buildeth the altar JEHOVAH-nissi ANd all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin after their journeys according to the commandment of the LORD and pitched in Rephidim and there was no water for the people to drink 2 * Numb 20.4 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses and said Give us water that we may drink And Moses said unto them Why chide you with me wherefore do ye tempt the LORD 3 And the people thirsted there for water and the people murmured against Moses and said Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt to kill us and our children our cattel with thirst 4 And Moses cried unto the LORD saying What shall I do unto this people they be almost ready to stone me 5 And the LORD said unto Moses Go on before the people and take with thee of the elders of Israel and thy rod wherewith * Chap. 7.20 thou smotest the river take in thine hand and go 6 * Numb 20.9 Psa 78.15 105.41 Wis 11.4 1 Cor. 10.4 Behold I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb and thou shalt smite the rock and there shall come water out of it that the people may drink And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel 7 And he called the name of the place ‖ That is tentation Massah and ‖ That is ●biding or strife Meribah because of the chiding of the children of Israel and because they tempted the LORD saying Is the LORD among us or not 8 ¶ * Deut. 25.17 Wis 11.3 Then came Amalek and sought with Israel in Rephidim 9 And Moses said unto * Called Jesus Acts 7.45 Joshua Choose us out men and go out fight with Amalek to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand 10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him and fought with Amalek and Moses Aaron and Hur went up to the top of the hill 11 And it came to pass when Moses held up his hand that Israel prevailed and when he let down his hand Amalek prevailed 12 But Moses hands were heavy and they took a stone and put it under him and he sat thereon and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands the one on the one side and the other on the other side and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun 13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword 14 And the LORD said unto Moses Write this for a memorial in a book and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua for * Numb 24 20. 1 Sam. 15.3 I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven 15 And Moses built an altar and called the name of it ‖ That is the LORD my banner JEHOVAH-ni●li 16 For he said ‖ Or Because the hand of Amalek is against the throne of the LORD therefore c. Because † Heb. the hand upon the throne of the LORD the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation CHAP. XVIII 1 Jethro bringeth to Moses his wife and two sons 7 Moses entertaineth him 13 Jethro's counsel is accepted 27 Jethro departeth WHen * Chap. 2.16 Jethro the priest of Midian Moses father in law heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel his people and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt 2 Then Jethro Moses father in law took Zipporah Moses wife after he had sent her back 3 And her two sons of which the * Chap. 2.22 name of the one was ‖ That is a stranger there Gerihom for he said I have been an alien in a strange land 4 And the name of the other was ‖ That is my God is an help Eliezer for the God of my father said be was mine help and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh 5 And Jethro Moses father in law came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness where he encamped at the mount of God 6 And he said unto Moses I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee and thy wife and her two sons with her 7 ¶ And Moses went out to meet his father in

Keep therefore the words of this covenant and do them that ye may prosper in all that ye do 10 ¶ Ye stand this day all of you before the LORD your God your captains of your tribes your elders and your officers with all the men of Israel 11 Your little ones your wives and thy stranger that is in thy camp from the hewer of thy wood unto the drawer of thy water 12 That thou shouldest † Heb pass enter into covenant with the LORD thy God and into his oath which the LORD thy God maketh with thee this day 13 That he may establish thee to day for a people unto himself and that he may be unto thee a God as he hath said unto thee and as he hat● sworn unto thy fathers to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob. 14 Neither with you onely do I make this covenant and this oath 15 But with him that standeth here with us this day before the LORD our God and also with him that is not here with us this day 16 For ye know how we have dwelt in the land of Egypt and how we came through the nations which ye passed by 17 And ye have seen their abominations and their † Heb. dungy gods idols wood and stone silver and gold which were among them 18 Lest there should be among you man or woman or family or tribe whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God to go and serve the gods of these nations lest there should be among you a root that heareth ‖ Or a poysonful herb † Heb. r●sk gall and wormwood 19 And it come to pass when he heareth the words of this curse that he bless himself in his heart saying I shall have peace though I walk in the ‖ Or stubbornness imagination or mine heart to add † Heb. the drunken to the thirsty drunkenness to thirst 20 The LORD will not spare him but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousie shall smoke against that man and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven 21 And the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel according to all the curses of the covenant that † Heb. is wri●ten are written in this book of the law 22 So that the generation to come of your children that shall rise up aft●r you and the stranger that shall come from a far land shall say when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses † Heb. wherewith the LORD hath made it sick which the LORD hath laid upon it 23 And that the whole land thereof is brimstone and salt and burning that it is not sown nor beareth nor any grass groweth therein * Gen. 19.24 25. like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah Admah and Zeboim which the LORD overthrew in his anger and in his wrath 24 Even all nations shall say * 1 Kin. 9.8 Jer. 22.8 Wherefore hath the LORD done thus unto this land what meaneth the heat of this great anger 25 Then men shall say Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt 26 For they went and served other gods and worshipped them gods whom they knew not and ‖ Or who had not given to them any portion whom he had not † Heb. divided given unto them 27 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book 28 And the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger and in wrath and in great indignation and cast them into another land as it is this day 29 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever that we may do all the words of this law CHAP. XXX 1 Great mercies promised unto the repentant 11 The commandment is manifest 15 Death and life are set before them ANd it shall come to pass when all these things are come upon thee the blessing and the curse which I have set before thee and thou shalt call them to minde among all the nations whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee 2 And shalt return unto the LORD thy God and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day thou and thy children with all thine heart and with all thy soul 3 That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity and have compassion upon thee and will return and gather thee from all the nations whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee 4 * Neh. 1 9● If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee and from thence will he fetch thee 5 And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed and thou shalt possess it and he will do thee good and multiply thee above thy fathers 6 And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart and the heart of thy seed to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart and with all-thy soul that thou mayest live 7 And the LORD thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies and on them that hate thee which persecuted thee 8 And thou shalt return and obey the voice of the LORD and do all his commandments which I command thee this day 9 * Chap. 28.11 And the LORD thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand in the fruit of thy body and in the fruit of thy cattel and in the fruit of thy land for good for the LORD will again rejoyce over thee for good as he rejoyced over thy fathers 10 If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God to

XXXIV 1 Moses from mount Nebo vieweth the land 5 He lieth there 6 His burial 7 His age 8 Thirty days mourning for him 9 Joshua succeedeth him 10 The praise of Moses ANd Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo to the top of ‖ Or the hill Pisgah that is over against Jericho and the LORD shewed him * Ch. 3.17 2 Mac. 2.1 all the land of Gilead unto Dan 2 And all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh and all the land of Judah unto the utmost sea 3 And the south and the plain of the valley of Jericho the city of palm-trees unto Zoar. 4 And the LORD said unto him * Gen. 12.7 13.15 This is the land which I sware unto Abraham unto Isaac unto Jacob saying I will give it unto thy seed I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes but thou shalt not go over thither 5 ¶ So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab according to the word of the LORD 6 ¶ And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab over against Beth-peor but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day 7 ¶ And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died his eye was not dim nor his † Heb. moisture natural force † Heb. s●ed abated 8 † And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days so the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended 9 ¶ And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom for Moses had laid his hands upon him and the children of Israel hearkned unto him and did as the LORD commanded Moses 10 ¶ And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses whom the LORD knew face to face 11 In all the signs and the wonders which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land 12 And in all that mighty hand and in all the great terrour which Mos●s shewed in the sight of all Israel ¶ The book of JOSHUA CHAP. I. 1 The Lord appointeth Joshua to succeed Moses 3 The borders of the promised land 5.9 God promiseth to asist Joshua 8 He giveth him instructions 10 He prepareth the people to pass over Jordan 12 Joshua putteth the two tribes and half in mind of their promise to Moses 15 They promise him fealty NOw after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun Moses * Deut. 1.38 minister saying 2 Moses my servant is dead now therefore arise go over this Jordan thou and all this people unto the land which I do give to them even to the children of Israel 3 * Deut. 11.24 Ch. 14.9 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon that have I given unto you as I said unto Moses 4 From the wilderness and this Lehanon even unto the great river the river Euphrates all the land of the Hittites and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your coast 5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life as I was with Moses so I will be with thee * Heb. 13.5 I will not sail thee nor forsake thee 6 * Deut. 31.23 Be strong and of a good courage for ‖ Or thou shalt cause th●● people to inherit the land c. unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land which I sware unto their fathers to give them 7 Onely be thou strong and very couragious that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded thee * Deu. 5.32 28.14 turn not from it to the right hand or to the left that thou mayest ‖ Or do wisely prosper withersoever thou goest 8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth but thou shalt meditate therein day and night that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous and then thou shalt ‖ Or do wisely have good success 9 Have not I commanded thee Be strong and of a good courage be not afraid neither be thou dismayed for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest 10 ¶ Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people saying 11 Pass through the host and command the people saying prepare you victuals for within three days ye shall pass over this Jordan to go in to possess the land which the LORD your God giveth you to possess it 12 ¶ And to the Reubenites and to the Gadites and to half the tribe of Manasseh spake Joshua saying 13 Remember * Numb 32.20 the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you saying The LORD your God hath given you rest and hath given you this land 14 Your wives your little ones and your cattel shall remain in the land which Moses gave you on this side Jordan but ye shall pass before your brethren † Heb. marshalled by five armed all the mighty men of valour and help them 15 Until the LORD have given your brethren rest as he hath given you and they also have possessed the land which the LORD your God giveth them then ye shall return unto the land of your possession and enjoy it
for them that be escaped of Benjamin that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel 18 Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters for the children of Israel have sworn saying Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin 19 Then they said Behold there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh † Heb. from year to year yearly in a place which is on the north side of Beth-el ‖ Or towards the sun-rising on the east-side ‖ Or Or. on of the high-way that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem and on the south of Lebonah 20 Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin saying Go and lie in wait in the vineyards 21 And see and behold if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances then come ye out of the vineyards and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh and go to the land of Benjamin 22 And it shall be when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain that we will say unto them ‖ Or Gratifie us in thim be favourable unto them for our sakes because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war for ye did not give unto them at this time that you should be guilty 23 And the children of Benjamin did so and took them wives according to their number of them that danced whom they caught and they went and returned unto their inheritance and repaired the cities and dwelt in them 24 And the children of Israel departed thence at that time every man to his tribe and to his family and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance 25 * Chap. 17.6 18.1 19.1 In those days there was no king in Israel every man did that which was right in his own eyes ¶ The book of RUTH CHAP. I. 1 Elimelech driven by famine into Moab dieth there 4 Mahlon and Chilion having married wives of Moab die also 6 Naomi returning homeward 8 dissuadeth her two daughters in law from going with her 14 Orpah leaveth her but Ruth with great constancy accompanieth her 19 They two come to Beth-lehem where they are gladly received NOw it came to pass in the days when the judges † Heb. judged ruled that there was a famine in the land and a certain man of Beth-lehem-judah went to sojourn in the countrey of Moab he and his wife and his two sons 2 And the name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion Ephrathites of Beth-lehem-judah and they came into the countrey of Moab and † Heb. were continued there 3 And Elimelech Naomi's husband died and she was left and her two sons 4 And they took them wives of the women of Moab the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth and they dwelled there about ten years 5 And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband 6 ¶ Then she arose with her daughters in law that she might return from the countrey of Meab for she had heard in the countrey of Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them bread 7 Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was and her two daughters in law with her and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah 8 And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law Go return each to her mothers house the LORD deal kindly with you as ye have dealt with the dead and with me 9 The LORD grant you that you may finde rest each of you in the house of her husband Then she kissed them and they lift up their voice and wept 10 And they said unto her Surely we will return with thee unto thy people 11 And Naomi said Turn again my daughters why will ye go with me are there yet any mo sons in my womb that they may be your husbands 12 Turn again my daughters go your way for I am too old to have an husband if I should say I have hope ‖ Or if I were with an bushand if I should have a husband also to night and should also bear sons 13 Would ye † Heb. hope tarry for them till they were grown would ye stay for them from having husbands nay my daughters for † Heb. I have much bitterness it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me 14 And they lift up their voice and wept again and Orpah kissed her mother in law but Ruth clave unto her 15 And she said Behold thy sister in law is gone back unto her people and unto her gods return thou after thy sister in law 16 And Ruth said ‖ Or Be not against me Intreat me not to leave thee or to return from following after thee for whither thou goest I will go and where thou lodgest I will lodge thy people shall be my people and thy God my God 17 Where thou diest will I die and there will I be buried the LORD do so to me and more also if ought but death part thee and me 18 When she saw that she † Heb. strengthned her self was stedfastly minded to go with her then she left speaking unto her 19 ¶ So they two went until they came to Beth-lehem And it came to pass when they were come to Beth-lehem that all the city was moved about them and they said Is this Naomi 20 And she said unto them Call me not ‖ That is pleasant Naomi call me ‖ That is bitter Mara for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me 21 I went out full and the LORD hath brought me home again empty why then call ye me Naomi seeing the LORD hath testified against me and the Almighty hath afflicted me 22 So Naomi returned and Ruth the Moabitess her daughter in law with her which returned out of the countrey of Moab and they came to Beth-lehem in the beginning of barley-harvest CHAP. II. 1 Ruth gleaneth in the fields of Boaz. 4 Boaz taking knowledge of her 8 sheweth her great favour 18 That which she got she carrieth to Naomi ANd Naomi had a kinsman of her husbands a mighty man of wealth of the family of Elimelech and his name was Boaz. 2 And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi Let me now go to the field and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall finde grace And she said unto her Go my daughter 3 And she went and came and gleaned in the field after the reapers and her † Heb. hap hapned hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto ‖ Called Mat. 1.5 Boaz. Boaz who was of the kindred of Elimelech 4 ¶ And behold Boaz came from Beth-lehem and said unto the reapers The LORD be with you and they answered him the LORD
brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us to slay us and our people 11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines and said Send away the ark of the God of Israel and let it go again to his own place that it slay us not and our people for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city the hand of God was very heavy there 12 And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods and the cry of the city went up to heaven CHAP. VI. 1 After seven moneths the Philistines take counsel how to send back the ark 10 They bring it on a new cart with●n offering unto Beth-shemesh 19 The people are smitten for looking into the ark 21 They send to them of K●rjath-jearim to fetch it ANd the ark of the LORD was in the countrey of the Philistines seven moneths 2 And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners saying What shall we do to the ark of the LORD tell us wherewith we shall sent it to his place 3 And they said If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel send it not empty but in any wife return him a trespass-offering then ye shall be healed and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you 4 Then said they What shall be the trespass offering which we shall return to him They answered Five golden emerods and five golden mice according to the number of the lords of the Philistines for one plague was on † Heb. them you all and on your lords 5 Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods and images of your mice that mar the land and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you and from off your gods and from off your land 6 Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardned their hearts when he had wrought ‖ Or ●●●roach-s●●lly wonderfully among them * Ex. 12.31 did they not let † Heb. them the people go and they departed 7 Now therefore make a new cart and take two milch-kine on which there hath come no yoke and tie the kine to the cart and bring their calves home from them 8 And take the ark of the LORD and lay it upon the cart and put the jewels of gold which ye return him for a trespass-offering in a coffer by the side thereof and send it away that it may go 9 And see if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Beth-shemesh then ‖ Or it he hath done us this great evil but if not then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us it was a chance that hapned to us 10 ¶ And the men did so and took two milch-kine and tied them to the cart and shut up their calves at home 11 And they laid the ark of the LORD upon the cart and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their emerods 12 And the kine took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh and went along the high-way lowing as they went and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the boder of Beth-shemesh 13 And they of beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat-harvest in the valley and they lifted up their eyes and saw the ark and rejoyced to see it 14 And the cart came into the field of Joshua a Beth-shemite and stood there where there was a great stone and they clave the wood of the cart and offered the kine a burnt-offering unto the LORD 15 And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD and the coffer that was with it wherein the jewels of gold were and put them on the great stone and the men of Beth-shemesh offered burnt-offerings and sacrificed sacrifices the same day unto the LORD 16 And when the five lords of the Philistines had seen it they returned to Ekron the same day 17 And these are the golden emerods which the Philistines returned for a trespass-offering unto the LORD for Ashdod one for Gaza one for Askelon one for Gath one for Ekron one 18 And the golden mice according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords both of fenced cities and of countrey-villages even unto the ‖ Or great stone great stone of Abel whereon they set down the ark of the LORD which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua the Beth shemite 19 ¶ And he smote the men of Beth-shemesh because they had looked into the ark of the LORD even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men and the people lamented because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter 20 And the men of Beth-shemesh said Who is able to stand before this holy LORD God and to whom shall he go up from us 21 ¶ And they sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kirjath-jearim saving The Philistines have brought again the ark of the LORD come ye down and fetch it up to you CHAP. VII 1 They of Kirjath jearim bring the ark into the house of Abinadab and sanctifie Eleazar his son to keep it 2 After twenty years 3 the Israelites by Samuels means solemnly repent at M●●peh 9 While Samuel prayeth and sacrificeth the Lord discomfiteth the Philistines by thunder at Eben-ezer 13 The Philistines are subdued 15 Samuel peaceably and religiously judgeth Israel ANd the men of Kirjath-jearim came and fetcht up the ark of the LORD and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD 2 And it came to pass while the ark abode in Kirjath-jearim that the time was long for it was twenty years and all the house of Israel lamented alter the LORD 3 ¶ And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel saying If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts then * Josh 24.14 23. put away the strange gods and * Judg. 2.13 Ashtaroth from among you and prepare your hearts unto the LORD and * Deu. 6.13 Mat. 4.10 Luk. 4.8 serve him onely and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines 4 Then the children of Israel did put away * Judg. 2.11 Baalim and Ashtaroth and served the LORD onely 5 And Samuel said Gather all Israel to Mizpeh and I will pray for you unto the LORD 6 And they gathered together to Mizpeh and drew water and poured it out before the LORD and fasted on that day and said there We have sinned against the LORD And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh 7 And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel and when the children of Israel heard

XXIV 1 David tempted by Satan forceth Joab to number the people 5 The captains in nine moneths and twenty days bring the muster of thirteen hundred thousand fighting men 10 David having three plagues propounded by Gad repeateth and chooseth the three days pestilence 15 After the death of three score and ten thousand David by repentance preventeth the destruction of Jerusalem 18 David by Gads direction purchaseth Araunahs threshing-floor where having sacrificed the plague stayeth ANd again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel and ‖ Satan See 1 Chr. 21.1 he moved David against them to say Go number Israel and Judah 2 For the king said to Joab the captain of the host which was with him ‖ Or Compass Go now through all the tribes of Israel from Dan even to Beersheba and number ye the people that I may know the number of the people 3 And Joab said unto the king Now the LORD thy God add unto the people how many soever they be an hundred-fold and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing 4 Notwithstanding the kings word prevailed against Joab and against the captains of the host and Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king to number the people of I●rael 5 ¶ And they passed over Jordan and pitched in Aroer on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the ‖ Or valley river of Gad and toward Jazer 6 Then they came to Gilead and to the ‖ Or nether-land newly inhabited land of Tahtim-hodshi and they came to Dan-j●a● and about to Zidon 7 And c●me to the strong hold of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivites and of the Canaanites and they went out to the south of Judah even to Beer-sheba 8 So when they had gone through all the land they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine moneths and twenty days 9 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men 10 ¶ And Davids heart smote him after that he had numbred the people and David said unto the LORD I have sinned greatly in that I have done and now I beseech thee O LORD take away the iniquity of thy servant for I have done very foolishly 11 For when David was up in the morning the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad Davids seer saying 12 Go and say unto David Thus saith the LORD I offer thee three things choose thee one of them that I may do it unto thee 13 So Gad came to David and told him and said unto him Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land or wilt thou flee three moneths before thine enemies while they pursue thee or that there be three days pestilence in thy land now advise and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me 14 And David said unto Gad I am in a great strait let us fall now into the hand of the LORD for his mercies are ‖ Or many great and let me not fall into the hand of man 15 So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men 16 And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it * 1 Sam. 15.11 the LORD repented him of the evil and said to the angel that destroyed the people It is enough stay now thine hand And the angel of the LORD was by the threshing-place of Araunah the Jebusite 17 And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people and said Lo I have sinned and I have done wickedly but these sheep what have they done let thine hand I pray thee be against me and against my fathers house 18 ¶ And Gad came that day to David and said unto him Go up rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshing-floor of Araunah the Jebusite 19 And David according to

before me as thou hast walked before me 26 And now O God of Israel let thy word I pray thee be verified which thou spakest unto thy servant David my father 27 But will God indeed dwell on the earth behold the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee how much less this house that I have builded 28 Yet have thou respect unto the prayer of thy servant and to his supplication O LORD my God to hearken unto the cry and to the prayer which thy servant prayeth before thee to day 29 That thine eyes may be open toward this house night and day even toward the place of which thou hast said * Deut. 12.11 My name shall be there that thou mayest hearken unto the prayer which thy servant shall make ‖ Or in this place towards this place 30 And hearken thou to the supplication of thy servant and of thy people Israel when they shall pray ‖ Or in this place towards this place and hear thou in heaven thy dwelling-place and when thou hearest forgive 31 ¶ If any man trespass against his neighbour † Heb and he require an oath of him and an oath be laid upon him to cause him to swear and the oath come before thine altar in this house 32 Then hear thou in heaven and do and judge thy servants condemning the wicked to bring his way upon his head and justifying the righteous to give him according to his righteousness 33 ¶ When thy people Israel be smitten down before the enemy because they have sinned against thee and shall turn again to thee confess thy name and pray make supplication unto thee ‖ Or towards in this house 34 Then hear thou in heaven and forgive the sin of thy people Israel and bring them again unto the land which thou gavest unto their fathers 35 ¶ When heaven is shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against thee if they pray towards this place and confess thy name and turn from their sin when thou afflictest them 36 Then hear thou in heaven and forgive the sin of thy servants and of thy people Israel that thou teach them the good way wherein they should walk and give rain upon thy land which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance 37 ¶ If there be in the land famine if there be pestilence blasting mildew locust or if there be caterpiller if their enemy besiege them in the land of their ‖ Or in●●sa●●tion cities whatsoever plague whatsoever sickness there be 38 What prayer and supplication soever be made by any man or by all thy people Israel which shall know every man the plague of his own heart and spread forth his hands towards this house 39 Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling-place and forgive and do and give to every man according to his ways whose heart thou knowest for thou even thou onely knowest the hearts of all the children of men 40 That they may fear thee all the days that they live in the land which thou gavest unto our fathers 41 Moreover concerning a stranger that is not of thy people Israel but cometh out of a far countrey for thy names sake 42 For they shall hear of thy great name and of thy strong hand and of thy stretched-out arm when he shall come and pray towards this house 43 Hear thou in heaven thy dwelling-place and do according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for that all people of the earth may know thy name to fear thee as do thy people Israel and that they may know that † Heb. thy name is called upon this house this house which I have builded is called by thy name 44 ¶ If thy people go out to battel against their enemy whithersoever thou shalt send them and shall pray unto the LORD † Heb the way of the city toward the city which thou hast chosen and toward the house that I have built for thy name 45 Then hear thou in heaven their prayer and their supplication and maintain their ‖ Or right cause 46 If they sin against thee * 2 Chr. 6.36 Eccles captives saying We have sinned and have done perversly we have committed wickedness 48 And so return unto thee with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies which led them away captive and pray unto thee toward their land which thou gavest unto their fathers the city which thou hast chosen and the house which I have built for thy name 49 Then hear thou their prayer and their supplication in heaven thy dwelling-place and maintain their ‖ Or right cause 50 And forgive thy people that have sinned against thee and all their transgressions wherein they have transgressed against thee and give them compassion before them who carried them captive that they may have compassion on them 51 For they be thy people and thine inheritance which thou broughtest forth out of Egypt from the midst of the furnace of iron 52 That thine eyes may be open unto the supplication of thy servant and unto the supplication of thy people Israel to hearken unto them in all that they call for unto thee 53 For thou didst separate them from among all the people of the earth to be thine inheritance * Exod. 19.5 as thou spakest by the hand of Moses thy servant when thou broughtest our fathers out of Egypt O Lord GOD. 54 And it was so that when Solomon had made an end of praying all this prayer and supplication unto the LORD he arose from before the altar of the LORD from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to heaven 55 And he stood and blessed all the congregation of Israel with a loud voice saying 56 Blessed be the LORD that hath given rest unto his people Israel according to all that he promised there hath not † Heb. faln failed one word of all his good promise which he promised by the hand of Moses his servant 57 The LORD our God be with us as he was with our fathers let him not leave us nor forsake us 58 That he may incline our hearts unto him to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments and his statutes
concubines and his wives turned away his heart 4 For it came to pass when Solomon was old that his wives turned away his heart after other gods and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God as was the heart of David his father 5 For Solomon went after * Judg. 2.13 Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites 6 And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD and † Heb. fulfilled not after went not fully after the LORD as did David his father 7 Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab in the hill that is before Jerusalem and for Molech the abomination of the children of Ammon 8 And likewise did he for all his strange wives which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods 9 ¶ And the LORD was angry with Solomon because his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel * Ch. 3.5 9.2 which had appeared unto him twice 10 And * Ch. 6.12 had commanded him concerning this thing that he should not go after other gods but he kept not that which the LORD commanded 11 Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon Forasmuch as this † Heb. is with thee is done of thee and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes which I have commanded thee * Ch. 12.15 I will surely rend the kingdom from thee and will give it to thy servant 12 Notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it for David thy fathers sake but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son 13 Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servants sake and for Jerusalems sake which I have chosen 14 ¶ And the LORD stirred up an adversary unto Solomon Hadad the Edomite he was of the kings seed in Edom. 15 * 2 Sam. 8.14 For it came to pass when David was in Edom and Joab the captain of the host was gone up to bury the slain after he had smitten every male in Edom 16 For six moneths did Joab remain there with all Israel until he had cut off every male in Edom 17 That Hadad fled he and certain Edomites of his fathers servants with him to go into Egypt Hadad being yet a little childe 18 And they arose out of Midian and came to Paran and they took men with them out of Paran and they came to Egypt unto Pharaoh king of Egypt which gave him an house and appointed him victuals and gave him land 19 And Hadad found great favour in the sight of Pharaoh so that he gave him to wife the sister of his own wife the sister of Tahpenes the queen 20 And the sister of Tahpenes bare him Genubath his son whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaohs house and Genubath was in Pharaohs houshold among the sons of Pharaoh 21 And when Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers and that Joab the captain of the host was dead Hadad said to Pharaoh † Heb. Send me away Let me depart that I may go to mine own countrey 22 Then Pharaoh said unto him But what hast thou lacked with me that behold thou seekest to go to thine own countrey And he answered † Heb. Not. Nothing howbeit let me go in any wise 23 ¶ And God stirred him up another adversary Rezon the son of Eliadah which fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah 24 And he gathered men unto him and became captain over a band * 2 Sam. 8.3 10.18 when David slew them of Zobah and they went to Damascus and dwelt therein and reigned in Damascus 25 And he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon beside the mischief that Hadad did and he abhorred Israel and reigned over Syria 26 ¶ And * 2 Chr. 13.6 Jeroboam the son of Nebat an Ephrathite of Zereda Solomons servant whose mothers name was Zeruiah a widow woman even he lift up his hand against the king 27 And this was the cause that he lift up his hand against the king Solomon built Millo and † Heb. ●losed repaired the breaches of the city of David his father 28 And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valour and Solomon seeing the young man that he † Heb. did work was industrious he made him ruler over all the † Heb. burden charge of the house of Joseph 29 And it came to pass at that time when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way and he had clad himself with a new garment and they two were alone in the fie●d 30 And Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him and rent it in twelve pieces 31 And he said to Jeroboam Take thee ten pieces for thus saith the LORD the God of Israel Behold I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and will give ten tribes to thee 32 But he shall have one tribe for my servant Davids sake and for Jerusalems sake the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel 33 Because that they have forsaken me and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonia●s Chemo●h the god of the Moabites and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon and have not walked in my ways to do that which is right in mine eyes and to keep my statutes and my judgements as did David his father 34 Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servants sake whom I chose because he kept my commandments and my statutes 35 But * Chap. 12.15 I will take the kingdom out of his sons hand and will give it unto thee even ten tribes 36 And unto his son will I give one tribe that David my servant may have a † Heb. ●amp or ●●●dle light alway before me in Jerusalem the city which I have chosen me to put my name t●ere 37 And I will take thee and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth and shalt be king over Israel 38 And it shall be it thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee and wilt walk in my ways and do that is right in my sight to keep my statutes and my commandments as David my servant did that I will be with thee and build thee a sure house as I built for David and will give Israel unto thee 39 And I will for this afflict the seed of David but not for ever 40 Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam and Jer●●oam arose and fled into Egypt unto Shishak king of Egypt and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon 41 ¶ And the rest of the ‖ Or words or things acts of Solomon and all that he did and his wisdom are they not written in the book of the acts of

VII 1 Elisha prophesieth incredible plenty in Samaria 2 Four lepers venturing on the host of the Syrians bring tidings of their flight 12 The king finding by spies the news to be true spoileth the tents of the Syrians 17 The lord who would not beleeve the prophesie of plenty having the charge of the gate is troden to death in the prea● THea Elisha said Hear ye the word of the LORD Thus saith the LORD To morrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel and two measures of barley for a shekel in the gate of Samaria 2 Then † Heb. a ●o●d which belonged to the king ●●●ni●● upon his hand a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man o● God and sa●d Behold if the LORD would make windows in heaven might this thing be And he said Behold thou shalt see it with thine eyes but shalt not eat thereof 3 ¶ And there were four leprous men at the entring in of the gate and they said one to another Why sit we here until we die 4 If we say We will enter into the city then the famine is in the city and we shall die there and if we sit still here we die also Now therefore come and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians if they save us alive we shall live and if they kill us we shall but die 5 And they ro●e up in the twilight to go unto the camp of the Syrians and when they were come to the uttermost part of the camp of Syria behold there was no man there 6 For the LORD had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots and a ●●ise of horses even the noise of a great host and they said one to another Lo the king of Israel hath hired against us thy kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians to come upon us 7 Wherefore they arose and fled in the twilight and left their tents and their horses and their asses even the camp as it was and fled for their life 8 And when these lepers came to the uttermost part of the camp they went into one tent and did eat and drink and carried thence silver and gold and raiment and went and hid it and came again and entred into another tent and carried thence also and went and hid it 9 Then they said one to another We do not well this day is a day of good tidings and we hold our peace if we tarry till the morning light † Heb. we shalt fin●● punishment some mischief will come upon us now therefore come that we may go and tell the kings houshold 10 So they came and called unto the porter of the city and they told them saying We came to the camp or the Syrians and behold there was no man there neither voice of man but horses tied and asses tied and the tents as they were 11 And he called the Porters and they told it to the kings house within 12 ¶ And the king arose in the night and said unto his servants I will now shew you what the Syrians have done to us they know that we be hungry therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field saying When they come out of the city we shall catch them alive and get into the city 13 And one of his servants answered and said Let some take I pray thee five of the horses that remain which are left † Heb. in it in the city behold they are as all the multitude of Israel that are left in it behold I say they are even as all the multitude of the Israelites that are consumed and let us send and see 14 They took therefore two chariot-horses and the king sent after the host of the Syrians saying Go and see 15 And they went after them unto ●ordan and lo all the way was full of garments and vessels which the Syrians had cast away in their haste and the messengers returned and told the king 16 And the people went out and spoiled the tents of the Syrians So a measure of fine flour was sold for a shekel and two measures of barley for a shekel according to the word of the LORD 17 ¶ And the king appointed the lord on whose hand he leaned to have the charge of the gate and the people trod upon him in the gate and he died as the man of God had said who spake when the king came down to him 18 And it came to pass as the man of God had spoken to the king saying Two measures of barley for a shekel and a measure of fine flour for a shekel shall be to morrow about this time in the gate of Samaria 19 And that lord answered the man of God and said Now behold if the LORD should make windows in heaven might such a thing be And he said Behold thou shalt see it with thine eyes but shalt not eat thereof 20 And so it fell out unto him for the people trod upon him in the gate and he died CHAP. VIII 1 The Sh●nammite having left her countrey seven years to avoid the forewarned famine for Elisha's miracles sake hath her land restored by the king 7 Hazael heina sent with a present by Ben-hadad to Elisha at Damascus after he had heard the prophesie killeth his master and succeedeth him 16 Jeborams wicked reign in Judah 20 Edom and Libnat revolt 22 Ahaziah succedeth Jehoram 25 Ahaziahs wicked reign 28 He visiteth Jehoram wounded at Jezreel THen spake Elisha unto the woman * Chap. 4.35 whose son he had restored to life saying Arise and go thou and thine houshold and sojourn wheresoever thou canst sojourn for the LORD hath called for a famine and it shall also come upon the land seven years 2 And the woman arose and did after the saying of the man of God and she went with her houshold and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years 3 And it came to pass at the seven years end that the woman returned out of the land of the Philistines and she went forth to cry unto the king for her house and for her land 4 And the king talked with Gehazi the servant of the man of God saying Tell me I pray thee all the great things that Elisha hath done 5 And it came to pass as he was telling the king how he had restored a dead body to life that behold the woman whose son he had restored to life cried to the king for her house and for her land And Gehazi said My lord O king this is the woman and this is her son whom Elisha restored to life 6 And when the king asked the woman she told him So the king appointed unto her a certain ‖ Or ●●nuch officer saying Restore all that was hers and all the fruits of the
And he brake down the houses of the sodomites that were by the house of the LORD where the women wove † Heb. houses hangings for the grove 8 And he brought all the priests out of the cities of ●udah and defiled the high places where the priests had burnt incense from Geba to Beer-sheba and brake down the high places of the gates that were in the entring in of the gate of Joshua the governour of the city which were on a mans left hand at the gate of the city 9 Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem but they did eat of the unleavened bread among their brethren 10 And he defiled Topheth which is in the valley of the children of Hinnom that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech 11 And he took away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun at the entring in of the house of the LORD by the chamber of Nathan-melech the ‖ Or eunuch o● officer chamberlain which was in the suburbs and burnt the chariots of the sun with fire 12 And the altars that were on the top of the upper chamber of Ahaz which the kings of Judah had made and the altars which * Ch. 21.5 Manasseh had made in the two courts of the house of the LORD did the king beat down and ‖ Or ran from thence brake them down from thence and cast the dust of them into the brook Kidron 13 And the high places that were before Jerusalem which were on the right hand of ‖ That is the mount of O●ives the mount of corruption which * 1 Kin. 11.7 Solomon the king of Israel had builded for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Zidonians and for Chemosh the abomination of the Moabites and for Milcom the abomination of the children of Ammon did the king defile 14 And he brake in pieces the † Heb. stat●es images and cut down the groves and filled their places with the bones of men 15 ¶ Moreover the altar that was at Beth-el and the high place which Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin had made both that altar and the high place he brake down and burnt the high place and stampt it small to powder and burnt the grove 16 And as Josiah turned himself he spied the sepulchres that were there in the mount and sent and took the bones out of the sepulchres and burnt them upon the altar and polluted it according to the * 1 Kin. 13. ● word of the LORD which the man of God proclaimed who proclaimed these words 17 Then he said What title is that that I see And the men of the city told him It is the sepulchre of the man of God which came from Judah and proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of Beth-el 18 And he said Let him alone let no man move his bones so they let his bones † Heb. to escape alone with the bones of the prophet that came out of Samaria 19 And all the houses also of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria which the kings of Israel had made to provoke the LORD to anger Josiah took away and did to them according to all the acts that he had done in Beth-el 20 And he ‖ Or sacrificed slew all the priests of the high places that were there upon the altars and burnt mens bones upon them and returned to Jerusalem 21 ¶ And the king commanded all the people saying * 2 Chron. 35.1 1 Esdr 1.1 Keep the pass-over unto the LORD your God * Exod. 12.3 Deut. 16.2 as it is written in the book of this covenant 22 Surely there was not holden such a pass-over from the days of the judges that judged Israel nor in all the days of the kings of Israel nor of the kings of Judah 23 But in the eighteenth year of king Josiah wherein this passover was holden to the LORD in Jerusalem 24 ¶ Moreover the workers with familiar spirits and the wizards and the ‖ Or teraphim images and the idols and all the abominations that were spied in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem did Josiah put away that he might perform the words of * Levit. 20.27 Deut. 18.11 the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the LORD 25 And like unto him was there no king before him that turned to the LORD with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might according to all the law of Moses neither after him arose there any like him 26 ¶ Notwithstanding the LORD turned not from the fierceness of his great wrath wherewith his anger was kindled against Judah because of all the † Heb. angers provocations that Manasseh had provoked him withal 27 And the LORD said I will remove Judah also out of my sight as I have removed Israel and will cast off this city Jerusalem which I have chosen and the house of which I said * 1 Kin. 8.29 9.3 Chap. 21.7 My name shall be there 28 Now the rest of the acts of Josiah and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 29 ¶ * 2 Chron. 35.20 In his days Pharaoh-nechoh king of Egypt went up against the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates and king Josiah went against him and he slew him at Megiddo when he had seen him 30 And his servants carried him in a chariot dead from Megiddo and brought him to Jerusalem and buried him in his own sepulchre and * 2 Chron. 36.1 the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah and anointed him and made him king in his fathers stead 31 ¶ Jehoahaz was twenty and three years old when he began to reign and he reigned three moneths in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah 32 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD according to all that his fathers had done 33 And Pharaoh-nechoh put him in hands at Riblah in the land of Hamath ‖ Or because be reigned that he might not reign in Jerusalem and † Heb. set a mulct upon the land put the land to a tribute of an hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold 34 And Pharaoh nechoh made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in the room of Josiah his father and turned his name to * Mat. 1.11 called Jakim Jehoiakim and took Jehoahaz away and he came to Egypt and died there 35 And Jehoiakim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh but he taxed the land to give the money according to the commandment of Pharaoh he exacted the silver and the gold of the people of the land of every one according to his
taxation to give it unto Pharaoh-nechoh 36 ¶ Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Zebudah the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah 37 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD according to all that his fathers had done CHAP. XXIV 1 Jehoiakim first subdued by Nebuchadnezzar then rebelling against him procureth his own ruine 6 Jehoiachin succeedeth him 7 The king of Egypt is vanquished by the king of Babylon 8 Jehoiachin his evil reign 10 Jerusalem is taken and carried captive into Babylon 17 Zedekiah is made king and reigneth ill unto the utter destruction of Judah IN his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up Jehoiakim became his servant three years then he turned rebelled against him 2 And the LORD sent against him bands of the Caldees and bands of the Syrians and bands of the Moabites and bands of the children of Ammon and sent them against Judah to destroy it * Chap. 20.17 23.27 according to the word of the LORD which he spake † Heb. by the hand of by his servants the prophets 3 Surely at the commandment of the LORD came this upon Judah to remove them out of his sight for the sins of Manasseh according to all that he did 4 And also for the innocent bloud that he shed for he filled Jerusalem with innocent bloud which the LORD would not pardon 5 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 6 So Jehoiakim slept with his fathers and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead 7 And the king of Egypt came not again any more out of his land for the king of Babylon had taken from the river of Egypt unto the river Euphrates all that pertained to the king of Egypt 8 ¶ Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign and he reigned in Jerusalem three moneths and his mothers name was Nehushta the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem 9 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD according to all that his father had done 10 ¶ * Dan. 1.1 At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem and the city † Heb. came into siege was besieged 11 And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city and his servants did besiege it 12 And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon he and his mother and his servants and his princes and his ‖ Or. eunuchs officers and the king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign 13 * Chap. 20.17 Isa 39 6. And he carried out thence all the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the kings house and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold which Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the LORD as the LORD had said 14 And he carried away all Jerusalem and all the princes and all the mighty men of valour even ten thousand captives and all the crafts-men and smiths none remained save the poorest sort of the people of the land 15 And * 2 Chron. 36.10 Esth 2.6 he carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon and the kings mother and the kings wives and his ‖ Or eunuchs officers and the mighty of the land those carried he into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon 16 And all the men of might even seven thousand and crafts-men and smiths a thousand all that were strong and apt for war even them the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon 17 ¶ And * Jer. 37.1 the king of Babylon made Mattaniah his fathers brother king in his stead and changed his name to Zedekiah 18 * Jer. 52.1 Zedekiah was twenty and one years old when he began to reign and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah 19 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD according to all that Jehoiakim had done 20 For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah until he had cast them out from his presence that Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon CHAP. XXV 1 Jerusalem is besieged 4 Zedekiah taken his sons slain his eyes put out 8 Nebuzar-adan defaceth the city carrieth the remnant except a jew poor labourers into captivity 13 spoileth and carrieth away the treasures 18 The nobles are slain at Biblab 22 Gedaliah who was set over them that remained being slain the rest flee into Egypt 27 Evil merodath advanceth Jehoiachin in his court ANd it came to pass * Jer. 39.1 and 52.4 in the ninth year of his reign in the tenth moneth in the tenth day of the moneth that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came he and all his host against Jerusalem and pitched against it and they built forts against it round about 2 And the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah 3 And on the ninth day of the * Jer. 52.6 fourth moneth the famine prevailed in the city and there was no bread for the people of the land 4 ¶ And the city was broken up and all the men of war fied by night by the way of the gate between two walls which is by the kings garden now the Caldees were against the city round about and the king went the way toward the plain 5 And the army of the Caldees pursued after the king and overtook him in the plains of Jericho and all his army were scattered from him 6 So they took the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon to Riblah and they † Heb. spake judgement with him gave judgement upon him 7 And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes and † Heb. made blind● put out the eyes of Zedckiah and bound him with fetters of brass and carried him to Babylon 8 ¶ And in the fifth moneth on the seventh day of the moneth which is the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came Nebuzar-adan ‖ Or chief marshal captain of the guard a servant of the king of Babylon unto Jerusalem 9 And he burnt the house of the LORD and the kings house and all the houses of Jerusalem and every great mans house burnt he with fire 10 And all the army of the Caldees that were with the captain of the guard brake down the walls of Jerusalem round about 11 Now the rest of the people that were left in the city and the † Heb. faln away fugitives that fell away to the king of Babylon with the remnant of the multitude did Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carry away 12 But the captain of the guard left of the poor of the land to be vine-dressers and husbandmen
made peace with David became his servants neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more CHAP. XX. 1 Rabbah is besieged by Joah spoiled by David and the people thereof tortured 4 Three giants are slain in three several overthrows of the Philistines ANd * 2 Sam. 11.1 it came to pass that † Heb. at the return of the year after the year was expired at the time that kings go out to battel Joab led forth the power of the army and wasted the countrey of the children of Ammon and came and besieged Rabbah but David tarried at Jerusalem and Joab smote Rabbah and destroyed it 2 And David * 2 Sam. 12.20 took the crown of their king from off his head and found it † Heb. the weight of to weigh a talent of gold and there were precious stones in it and it was set upon Davids head and he brought also exceeding much spoil out of the city 3 And he brought out the people that were in it and cut them with saws and with harrows of iron and with axes even so dealt David with all the cities of the children of Ammon And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem 4 ¶ And it came to pass after this * 2 Sam. 21.18 that there ‖ Or continued † Heb. stood arose war at ‖ Or Gob. XXI 1 David tempted by Satan forceth Joab to number the people 5 The number of the people being brought David repenteth of it 9 David having three plagues propounded by Gad chooseth the pestilence 14 After the death of sevent● thousand David by repentance preventeth the destruction of Jerusalem 18 David by Gads direction purchaseth Ornans thresh●ng-floor where having built an altar God giveth a signe of his favour by fir● and sta●eth the plague 28 David sacrificeth there 〈◊〉 restrained from Gibeon by fear of the angel ANd * 2 Sam. 14.1 c. Satan stood up against Israel and provoked David to number Israel 2 And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people Go number Israel from Beer-sheba even to Dan and bring the number of them to me that I may know it 3 And Joab answered The LORD make his people an hundred times so many mo as they be but my lord the king are they not all my lords servants why then doth my lord require this thing why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel 4 Nevertheless the kings word prevailed against Joab wherefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel and came to Jerusalem 5 ¶ And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword 6 But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them for the kings word was abominable to Joab 7 † Heb. And it was evil in the eyes of the LORD concerning this thing And God was displeased with this thing therefore he smote Israel 8 And David said unto God * 2 Sam. 24.10 I have sinned greatly because I have done this thing but now I beseech thee do away the iniquity of thy servant for I have done very foolishly 9 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Gad Davids seer saying 10 Go and tell David saying Thus saith the LORD I † Heb. streech out offer thee three things choose thee one of them that I may do it unto thee 11 So Gad came to David and said unto him Thus saith the LORD † Heb. take to thee Choose thee 12 Either three years famine or three moneths to be destroyed before thy foes while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee or else three days the sword of the LORD even the pestilence in the land and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel now therefore advise thy self what word I shall bring again to him that sent me 13 And David said unto Gad I am in a great strait let me fall now into the hand of the LORD for very ‖ Or ●any great are his mercies but let me not fall into the hand of man 14 ¶ So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men 15 And God sent an * 2 Sam. 24.16 angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it and as he was destroying the LORD beheld and he repented him of the evil and said to the angel that destroyed It is enough stay now thine hand And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshing-floor of ‖ Or A●aunah 1 Sam. 24.18 Ornan the Jebusite 16 And David lift up his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem then David and the elders of Israel who were clothed in sackcloth fell upon their faces 17 And David said unto God Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbred even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed but as for these sheep what have they done let thine hand I pray thee O LORD my God be on me and on my fathers house but not on thy people that they should be plagued 18 ¶ Then the * ●● Chr. ● ● angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David that David should go up and set up an alter unto the LORD in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite 19 And David went up at the saying of God which he spake in the name of the LORD 20 ‖ Or who Ornan turned back and saw the angel the 〈◊〉 he and his four sons with him ●id themselves And Ornan turned back and saw the angel and his four sons with him hid themselves Now Ornan was threshing wheat 21 And as David name to Ornan Ornan looked and saw David and went out of the threshing-floor and bowed
not able to receive the burnt-offerings and the meat-offerings and the fat 8 ¶ Also at the same time Solomon kept the feast seven days and all Israel with him a very great congregation from the entring in of Hamath unto * Josh 13.3 the river of Egypt 9 And in the eighth day they made † Heb. a restraint a solemn assembly for they kept the dedication of the altar seven days and the feast seven days 10 And on the three and twentieth day of the seventh moneth he sent the people away into their tents glad and merry in heart for the goodness that the LORD had shewed unto David and to Solomon and to Israel his people 11 Thus * 1 King 9.1 c. XV. 1 The utter rejection and manifold judgements of the Jews 10 Jeremiah complaining of their spite receiveth a promise for himself 12 a threatning for them 15 He prayeth 19 and receiveth a gracious promise THen said the LORD unto me * Ezek. 11.14 Though * Ex. 32.11 14. XXV 1 Jeremiah reproving the Jews disobedience to the prophets 8 foretelleth the seventy years captivity 12 and after that the destruction of Babylon 15Vnder the type of a cup of wine be foresheweth the destruction of all nations 34 The howling of the shepherds THe word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah that was the first year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon 2 The which Jeremiah the prophet spake unto all the people of Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem saying 3 From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah even unto this day that is the three and twentieth year the word of the LORD hath come unto me and I have spoken unto you rising early and speaking but ye have not hearkned 4 And the LORD hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets * Ch. 29.19 rising early and sending them but ye have not hearkned nor inclined your ear to hear 5 They said * 2 Kin. 17.13 Ch. 18.11 and 35.15 Jon. 3.8 Turn ye again now every one from his evil way and from the evil of your doings and dwell in the land that the LORD hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever 6 And go not after other gods to serve them and to worship them and provoke me not to anger with the works of your hands and I will do you no hurt 7 Yet ye have not hearkned unto me saith the LORD that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt 8 ¶ Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts Because ye have not heard my words 9 Behold I will send and take all the families of the north saith the LORD and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon my servant and will bring them against this land and against the inhabitants thereof and against all these nations round about and will utterly destroy them and make them an astonishment and an hissing and perpetual desolations 10 Moreover † Heb. they went to burn incense and to serve other gods whom they knew not neither they you nor your fathers 4 Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets rising e●●ly and sending them saying Oh do not this abominable thing that I hate 5 But they hearkned not nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness to burn no incense unto other gods 6 Wherefore my fury and mine anger was poured forth and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem and they are wasted and desolate as at this day 7 Therefore now thus saith the LORD the God of hosts the God of Israel Wherefore commit ye this great evil against your souls to cut off from you man and woman childe and suckling † Heb. out of the midst of Ju●●● out of Judah to leave you none to remain 8 In that ye provoke me unto wrath with the works of your hands burning incense unto other gods in the land of Egypt whither ye be gone to dwell that ye might cut your selves off and that ye might be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth 9 Have ye forgotten the † Heb. wickednesses or ●●nishments c. wickedness of your fathers and the wickedne●s of the kings of Judah and the wickedness of their wives and your own wickedness and the wickedness of your wives which they have committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem 10 They are not † Heb. contrite humbled even unto this day neither have they feared nor walked in my law nor in my statutes that I set before you and before your fathers 11 ¶ Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Behold * Au●●s 9.4 I will set my face against you for evil and to cut off all Judah 12 And I will take the remnant of Judah that have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to sojourn there and they shall all be consumed and fall in the land of Egypt they shall even be consumed by the sword and by the famine they shall die from the least even unto the greatest by the sword and by the famine and they shall be an execration and an astonishment and a curse and a reproach 13 For I will punish them that dwell in the land of Egypt as I hav● punished Jerusalem by the sword by the famine and by the pentilence 14 So that none of the remnant of Judah which are gone into the land or Egypt to so journ there shall escape or remain that they should return into the land of Judah to the which they † Heb. ●ift up their soul have a desire to return to dwell there for none shall return but such as shall escape 15 ¶ Then all the men which knew that their wives had burnt incense unto other gods and all the women that stood by a great multitude even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt in Pathies answered Jeremiah saying 16 As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the LORD we will not hearken unto thee 17 But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth to burn incense unto the ‖ Or. frame of hea●en * Chap. 7.18 queen of heaven and to pour out drink-offerings unto her as we have done we and our fathers our kings and our princes in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem for then had we plenty of † Heb. bread victuals and were well and saw no evil 18 But since we lest off to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink-offerings unto her we have wanted all things and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine 19 * Chap. ● 18 And when we burnt incense to the queen of heaven and poured out drink-offerings unto her did we make her cakes to worship her and pour out drink-offerings unto her without our ‖ Or husband● men 20 ¶ Then Jeremiah said unto all the people to the men and to the women and to all the people which had given him that answer saying 21 The incense that ye burnt in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem ye and your fathers your kings and your princes and the people of the land did not the LORD remember them and came it not into his minde 22 So that the LORD could no longer bear because of the evil of your doings and because of the abominations which ye have committed therefore is your land a desolation and an astonishment and a curse without an inhabitant as at this day 23 Because you have burnt incense and because ye have sinned against the LORD and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD not walked in his law nor in his statutes nor in his testimomes therefore this evil is hapned unto you as at this day 24 Moreover Jeremiah said unto all the people and to all the women Hear the word of the LORD all Judah that are in the land of Egypt 25 Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel saying Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouthes and fulfilled with your hand saying We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink-offering unto her ye will surely accomplish your vows and surely perform your vows 26 Therefore hear ye the word of the LORD all Judah that dwell in the land of Egypt Behold I have sworn by my great name saith the LORD that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt saying The Lord GOD liveth 27 Behold I will watch over them for evil and not for good and all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine until there be an end of them 28 Yet a small number that escape the sword shall return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah and all the remnant of Judah that are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there shall know whore words shall stand † Heb. from 〈◊〉 or from them mine or theirs 29 ¶ And this shall be a signe unto you saith the LORD that I will pun●●● you in this place that ye may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil 30 Thus saith the LORD Behold I will give Pharaoh-hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies and into the hand of them that seek his life as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon his enemy and that sought his life CHAP. XLV 1 Baruch being dism●●ed 4 Jeremiah instructeth and comforteth him THe word that Jeremiah the prophet spake unto Baruch the son of Neriah when he had written these words in a book at
the mouth of Jeremiah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judan saying 2 Thus saith the LORD the God of Israel unto thee O Baruch 3 Thou didst say Wo is me now for the LORD hath added grief to my sorrow I fainted in my sighing and I finde no rest 4 ¶ Thus shalt thou say unto him The LORD saith thus Behold that which I have built will I break down and that which I have planted I will pluck up even this whole land 5 And seekest thou great things for thy self seek them not for behold I will bring evil upon all flesh saith the LORD but thy life will I give unto thee * Ch. 39 1● for a prey in all places whither thou goest CHAP. XLVI 1 Jeremiah prophesieth the overthrow of Pharaohs army at Euphrates 13 and the conquest of Egypt by Nebuchadrezzar 27 He comforteth Jacob in their chastisement THe word of the LORD which came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Gentiles 2 Against Egypt against the army of Pharaoh-necho king of Egypt which was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon smote in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Jo●iah king of Judah 3 Order ye the buckler and shield and draw near to battel 4 Harness the horses and get up ye hors-men and stand forth with your helmets furbish the spears and put on the brigandines 5 Wherefore have I seen them dismayed and turned away back and their mighty ones are † Heb. broken in pieces beaten down and are † Heb. ●e● a flight fled apace and look not back for fear was round about saith the LORD 6 Let not the swift flee away nor the mighty man escape they shall stumble and fall toward the north by the river Euphrates 7 Who is this that cometh up as a floud whose waters are moved as the rivers 8 Egypt riseth up like a floud and his waters are moved like the rivers and he saith I will go up and will cover the earth I will destroy the city and the inhabitants thereof 9 Come up ye horses and rage ye chariots and let the mighty men come forth † Heb. Cu●h the Ethiopians and † Heb. Put. the Libyans that handle the shield and the Lydians that handle and bend the bowe 10 For this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts a day of vengeance that he may avenge him of his adversaries and the sword shall devour and it shall be satiate and made drunk with their bloud for the Lord GOD of hosts hath a sacrifice in the north-countrey by the river Euphrates 11 Go up into Gilead and take balm O virgin the daughter of Egypt in vain shalt thou use many medicines for † Heb. no cure shall be ●nto thee thou shalt not be cured 12 The nations have heard of thy shame and thy cry hath filled the land for the mighty man hath stumbled against the mighty and they are faln both together 13 ¶ The word that the LORD spake to Jeremiah the prophet how Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon should come and smite the land of Egypt 14 Declare ye in Egypt and publish in Migdol and publish in Noph and in Tahpanhes say ye Stand fast and prepare thee for the sword shall devour round about thee 15 Why are thy valiant men swept away they stood not because the LORD did drive them 16 He † Heb. multiplied the faller made many to fall yea one fell upon another and they said Arise and let us go again to our own people and to the land of our nativity from the oppressing sword 17 They did cry there Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise he hath passed the time appointed 18 As I live saith the King whose name is the LORD of hosts Surely as Tabor is among the mountains and as Carmel by the sea so shall he come 19 Oh thou daughter dwelling in Egypt † Heb. ●ak● thee instruments of captivity furnish thy self to go into captivity for Noph shall be waste and desolate without an inhabitant 20 Egypt is like a very fair heifer but destruction cometh it cometh out of the north 21 Also her hired men are in the midst of her like † Heb. 〈◊〉 of 〈◊〉 shall fatted bullocks for they also are turned back and are fled away together they did not stand because the day of their calamity was come upon them and the time of their visitation 22 The voice thereof shall go like a serpent for they shall march with an army and come against her with axes as hewers of wood 23 They shall cut down her forest saith the LORD though it cannot be searched because they are more then the grashoppers and are innumerable 24 The daughter of Egypt shall be confounded she shall be delivered into the hand of the people of the north 25 The LORD of hosts the God of Israel saith Behold I will punish the ‖ Or nourisher † Heb. Amen multitude of No and Pharaoh and Egypt with their gods and their kings even Pharaoh and all them that trust in him 26 And I will deliver them into the hand of those that seek their lives and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of his servants and afterwards it shall be inhabited as in the days of old saith the LORD 27 ¶ * Isa 41. ●3 43 5. 44.2 Chap. 30.10 But fear not thou O my servant Jacob and be not dismayed O Israel for behold I will save thee from afar off and thy seed from the land of their captivity and Jacob shall return and be in re●● and at ease and none shall make him afraid 28 Fear thou not O Jacob my servant saith the LORD for I am with thee for I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee but I will not make * Chap. 10.24 30.11 a full end of thee but correct thee in measure yet will I ‖ Or not utterly ●ut thee off not leave thee wholly unpunished CHAP. XLVII The destruction of the Philistines THe word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Philistines before that Pharaoh smote † Heb. Azza● Gaza 2 Thus saith the LORD Behold * Isa 8.7 water rise up out of the north and shall be an overflowing floud and shall overflow the land and † Heb. the fulness ●●ereof all that is therein the city and them that dwell therein then the men shall cry and all the inhabitants of the land shall howl 3 At the noise of the stamping of the hoo●s of his strong horses at the rushing of his chariots and at the rumbling of his wheels the father shall not look back to their children for feebleness of hands 4 Because of the day that cometh to spoil all the Philistines and to cut off from Tyrus and Zidon every helper that remaineth for the LORD will
her saith the LORD 54 A found of a cry cometh from Babylon and great destruction from the land of the Caldeans 55 Because the LORD hath spoiled Babylon and destroyed out of her the great voice when her waves do roar like great waters a noise of their voice is uttered 56 Because the spoiler is come upon her even upon Babylon and her mighty men are taken every one of their bows is broken for the LORD God of recompences shall surely requite 57 And I will make drunk her princes and her wise men her captains and her rulers and her mighty men and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake saith the King whose name is the LORD of hosts 58 Thus saith the LORD of hosts ‖ Or The walls of broad Babylon The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly ‖ Or made naked broken and her high gates shall be burnt with fire and the people shall labour in vain and the folk in the fire and they shall be weary 59 ¶ The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah the son of Maaseiah when he went ‖ Or on the behalf of with Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign and this Seraiah was a ‖ Or prince of Menucha or chief chamberlain quiet prince 60 So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon even all these words that are written against Babylon 61 And Jeremiah said to Seraiah When thou comest to Babylon and shalt see and shalt read all these words 62 Then shalt thou say O LORD thou hast spoken against this place to cut it off that none shall remain in it neither man nor beast but that it shall be † Heb. desolations desolate for ever 63 And it shall be when thou hast made an end of reading this book that thou shalt binde a stone to it cast it into the midst of Euphrates 64 And thou shalt say Thus shall Babylon sink and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her and they shall be weary Thus far are the words of Jeremiah CHAP. LII 1 Zedekiah rebelleth 4 Jerusalem is besieged and taken 8 Zedekiahs sons killed and his own eyes put out 12 Nebuzar-adan burneth and spoileth the city 24 He carrieth away the captives 31 Evil-merodach advanceth Jehoiachin ZEdekiah was * 2 Kin. 24.18 one and twenty year old when he † Heb. reigned began to reign and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah 2 And he did that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD according to all that Jehoiakim had done 3 For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah till he had cast them out from his presence that Zedekiah revelled against the king of Babylon 4 ¶ And it came to pass in the * 2 Kin. 25.1 Ch. 39.1 ninth year of his reign in the the moneth in the tenth day of the moneth that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came he and all his army against Jerusalem and pitched against it and built forts against it round about 5 So the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah 6 And in the fourth moneth in the ninth day of the moneth the famine was fore in the city so that there was no bread for the people of the land 7 Then the city was broken up and all the men of war fled and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls which was by the kings garden now the Caldeans were by the city round about and they went by the way of the plain 8 ¶ But the army of the Caldeans pursued after the king and overtook 9 Then they took the king and carried him up unto the king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath where he gave judgement upon him 10 And the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes he slew also all the princes of Judah in Riblah 11 Then he † Heb. blinded put out the eyes of Zedekiah and the king of Babylon bound him in ‖ Or fetters chains and carried him to Babylon and put him in † Heb. house of the wards prison till the day of his death 12 ¶ Now in the fifth moneth in the tenth day of the moneth which was the nineteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came Nebuzar-adam ‖ Or chief marshal † Heb. chief of the executioners or slaughter-men And so v. ● 14. c. captain of the guard which † Heb. stood before served the king of Babylon into Jerusalem 13 And burnt the house of the LORD and the kings house and all the houses of Jerusalem and all the houses of the great men burnt he with fire 14 And all the army of the Caldeans that were with the captain of the guard brake down all the walls of Jerusalem round about 15 Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away captive certain of the poor of the people and the residue of the people that remained in the city and those that fell away that fell to the king of Babylon and the rest of the multitude 16 But Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard left certain of the poor of the land for vine-dressers and for husbandmen 17 Also the * Ch. 27.19 pillars of brass that were in the house of the LORD and the bases and the brasen sea that was in the house of the LORD the Caldeans brake and carried all the brass of them to Babylon 18 The caldrons also and the ‖ Or instruments to remove the ashes shovels and the snuffers and the ‖ Or basons bowls and the spoons and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministred took they away 19 And the basons and the ‖ Or censers fire-pans and the bowls and the caldrons and the candlesticks and the spoons and the cups that which was of gold in gold and that which was of silver in silver took the captain of the guard away 20 The two pillars one sea and twelve brasen bulls that were under the bases which king Solomon had made in the house of the LORD † Heb. their brass the brass of all these vessels was without weight 21 And concerning the * 1 Kin. 7.15 2 Kin. 25.17 2 Chr. 3.15 pillars the height of one pillar was eighteen cubits and a † Heb. threed fillet of twelve cubits did compass it and the thickness thereof was four singers it was hollow 22 And a chapiter of brass was upon it and the height of one chapiter was five cubits with net-work and pomegranates upon the chapiters round about all of brass the second pillar also and the pomegranates were like unto these 23 And there were ninety and six pomegranates on a side and all the
will I gather the Egyptians from the people whither they were scattered 14 And I will bring again the captivity of Egypt and will cause them to return into the land of Pathros into the land of their ‖ Or birth habitation and they shall be there a † Heb. low base kingdom 15 It shall be the basest of the kingdoms neither shall it exalt it self any more above the nations for I will diminish them that they shall no more rule over the nations 16 And it shall be no more the confidence of the house of Israel which bringeth their iniquity to remembrance when they shall look after them but they shall know that I am the Lord GOD. 17 ¶ And it came to pass in the seven and twentieth year in the first moneth in the first day of the moneth the word of the LORD came unto me saying 18 Son of man Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon caused his army to serve a great service against Tyrus every head was made bald and every shoulder was peeled yet had he no wages nor his army for Tyrus for the service that he had served against it 19 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I will give the land of Egypt unto Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and he shall take her multitude and † Heb. spoil her spoil and prey her prey take her spoil and take her prey and it shall be the wages for his army 20 I have given him the land of Egypt ‖ Or for his bi●s for his labour wherewith he served against it because they wrought for me saith the Lord GOD. 21 ¶ In that day will I cause the horn of the house of Israel to bud forth and I will give thee the opening of the mouth in the midst of them and they shall know that I am the LORD CHAP. XXX 1 The desolation of Egypt and her helpers 20 The arm of Babylon shall be strengthned to break the arm of Egypt THe word of the LORD came again unto me saying 2 Son of man prophesie and say Thus saith the Lord GOD Howl ye wo worth the day 3 For the day is near even the day of the LORD is near a cloudy day it shall be the time of the heathen 4 And the sword shall come upon Egypt and great ‖ Or fear pain shall be in Ethiopia when the slain shall fall in Egypt and they shall take away her multitude and her foundations shall be broken down 5 Ethiopia and † Heb. Phut Libya and Lydia and all the mingled people and Chub and the † Heb. children men of the land that is in league shall fall with them by the sword 6 Thus saith the LORD They also that uphold Egypt shall fall and the pride of her power shall come down from the tower of Syene shall they fall in it by the sword saith the Lord GOD. 7 And they shall be desolate in the midst of the countre●s that are desolate and her cities shall be in the midst of the cities that are wasted 8 And they shall know that I am the LORD when I have set a fire in Egypt and when all her helpers shall be † Heb. broken destroyed 9 In that day shall messengers go forth from me in ships to make the careless Ethiopians afraid and great pain shall come upon them as in the day of Egypt for lo it cometh 10 Thus saith the Lord GOD I will also make the multitude of Egypt to cease by the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon 11 He and his people with him the terrible of the nations shall be brought to destroy the land and they shall draw their swords againt Egypt and fill the land with the slain 12 And I will make the rivers † Heb. d●●ught dry and sell the land into the hand of the wicked and I will make the land waste and † Heb the fulness thereof all that is therein by the hand of strangers I the LORD have spoken it 13 Thus saith the Lord GOD I will also * Zuch 13.2 destroy the idols and I will cause their images to cease out of Noph and there shall be no more a prince of the land of Egypt and I will put a fear in the land of Egypt 14 And I will make Pathros desolate and will set fire in ‖ Or Tanis Zoan and will execute judgements in No. 15 And I will pour my fury upon ‖ Or Pe●●sium Sin the strength of Egypt and I will cut off the multitude of No. 16 And I will set fire in Egypt Sin shall have great pain and No shall ●e rent as●nder and Noph shall have d●stresses daily 17 The young men of ●●●n and of ‖ Or H●●o●●lis Pi beseth shall fall by the sword● and these c●t●es sha●l go into captivity 18 At Tehaphnehes also the day shall be ‖ Or B●ia●●● darkne● when I shall break there the yokes of Egypt and the pomp of her strength shall cease in her ‖ Or ●●siramed as for her a cloud shall cover her and her daughters shall go into captivity 19 Thus will I execute judgements in Egypt and they shall know that I am the LORD 20 ¶ And it came to pass in the eleventh year in the first moneth in the seventh day of the moneth that the word of the LORD came unto me saying 21 Son of man I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt and lo it shall not be bound up to be hea●ed to put a roller to binde it to make it strong to hold the sword 22 The●efore thus saith the Lord GOD Behold I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt and will break his arms the strong and that which was broken and I will cause the sword to fall out of his hand 23 And I will ●●atter the Egypt●ans among the nations and will disperse them through the countreys 24 And I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put my sword in his hand but I will break Pharaohs arms and he shall groan before him with the groanings of a deadly wounded man 25 But I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and the arms of Pharaoh shall fall down and they shall know that I am the LORD when I shall put my sword into the hand of the king of Babylon and he shall stretch it out upon the land of Egypt 26 And I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them among the countreys and they shall know that I am the LORD CHAP. XXXI 1 A relation unto Pharaoh 3 of the glory of Assyria 10 and the fall thereof for pride 18 The like destruction of Egypt ANd it came to pass in the eleventh year in the third moneth in the first day of the moneth that the word of the LORD came unto me saying 2 Son of man speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his multitude Whom art thou like in thy greatness 3 ¶ Behold
then shall they know that I am the LORD 16 This is the lamentation wherewith they shall lament her the daughters of the nations shall lament her they shall lament for her even for Egypt and for all her multitude saith the Lord GOD. 17 ¶ It came to pass a●so in the twelfth year in the fifteenth day of the moneth that the word of the LORD came unto me saying 18 Son of man wail for the multitude of Egypt and cast them down even her and the daughters of the famous nations unto the nether parts of the earth with them that go down into the pit 19 Whom dost thou pass in beauty go down and be thou laid with the uncircumcised 20 They shall fall in the midst of them that are slain by the sword ‖ Or the 〈◊〉 is 〈◊〉 she is del vered to the sword draw her and all her multitudes 21 The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell with them that help him they are gone down they lie uncircumcised slain by the sword 22 Asshur is there and all her company his graves are about him all of them slain faln by the sword 23 Whose graves are set in the sides of the pit and her company is round about her grave all of them slain faln by the sword which caused ‖ Or disma●●● terrour in the land of the living 24 There is Elam and all her multitude round about her grave all of them slain faln by the sword which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth which caused their terrour in the land of the living yet have they born their shame with them that go down to the pit 25 They have set her a bed in the midst of the slain with all her multitude her graves are round about him all of them uncircumcised slain by the sword though their terrour was caused in the land of the living yet have they born their shame with them that go down to the pit he is put in the midst of them that be slain 26 There is Meshech Tubal and all her multitude her graves are round about him all of them uncircumcised slain by the sword though they caused their terrour in the land of the living 27 And they shall not lie with the mighty that are faln of the uncircumcised which are gone down to hell † Heb. with weapon● of their 〈◊〉 with their weapons of war and they have said their swords under their heads but their iniquities shall be upon their bones though they were the terrour of the mighty in the land of the living 28 Yea thou shalt be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised and shalt he with them that are slain with the sword 29 There is Edom her kings and all her princes which with their might are † Heb. given or put laid by them that were slain by the sword they shall lie with the uncircumcised and with them that go down to the pit 30 There be the princes of the north all of them and all the Zidonians which are gone down with the slain with their terrour they are ashamed of their might and they lie uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword and bear their shame with them that go down to the pit 31 Pharaoh shall see them and shall be comforted over all his multitude even Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword saith the Lord GOD. 32 For I have caused my terrour in the land of the living and he shall be laid in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that are slain with the sword even Pharaoh and all his multitude saith the Lord GOD. CHAP. XXXIII 1 According to the duty of a watchman in warning the people 7 Ezekiel is admonished of his duty 10 God sheweth the justice of his ways towards the penitent and towards revolters 17 He maintaineth his justice 21Vpon the news of the taking of Jerusalem he prophesieth the desolation of the land 30 Gods judgement upon the mockers of the prophets AGain the word of the LORD came unto me saying 2 Son of man speak to the children of thy people and say unto them † Heb. A land when I bring a sword upon her When I bring the sword upon a land if the people of the land take a man of their coasts and set him for their watchman 3 It when he seeth the sword come upon the land he blow the trumpet and warn the people 4 Then † Heb. he that hearing heareth whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet and taketh not warning it the sword come and take him away his bloud shall be upon his own head 5 He heard the sound of the trumpet and took not warning his bloud shall be upon him but he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul 6 But if the watchman see the sword come and blow not the trumpet and the people be not warned it the sword come and take any person from among them he is taken away in his iniquity but his bloud will I require at the watchmans hand 7 ¶ * Chap. 3.17 c. So thou O son of man I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth and warn them from me 8 When I say unto the wicked O wicked man thou shalt surely die if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way that wicked man shall die in his iniquity but his bloud will I require at thine hand 9 Nevertheless if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it If he do not turn from his way he shall die in his iniquity but thou hast delivered thy soul 10 ¶ Therefore O thou son of man speak unto the house of Israel Thus ye speak saying If our transgressions and our sins be upon us and we pine away in them how should we then live 11 Say unto them As I live saith the Lord GOD * 2 Sam. 14.14 Ch. 18.32 I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked but that the wicked turn from his way and live turn ye turn ye from your evil ways for * Chap. 18.31 why will ye die O house of Israel 12 Therefore thou son of man say unto the children of thy people The * Chap. 18 2● righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression as for the wickedness of the wicked he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth 13 When I shall say to the righteous that he shall surely live if he trust to his own righteousness and commit iniquity all his righteousness shall not be remembred but for his iniquity that he hath committed he shall die for it 14 Again when I say unto the wicked Thou shalt surely die if he turn
A famine of the word threatned THus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me and behold a basket of summer-fruit 2 And he said Amos what seest thou and I said A basket of summer-fruit Then said the LORD unto me The end is come upon my people of Israel I will not again pass by them any more 3 And the songs of the temple † Heb. shall howl shall be howlings in that day saith the Lord GOD there shall be many dead bodies in every place they shall cast them forth † Heb. be silent with silence 4 ¶ Hear this O ye that swallow up the needy even to make the poor of the land to fail 5 Saying When will the ‖ Or moneth new-moon be gone that we may sell corn and the sabbath that we may † Heb. open set forth wheat making the ephah small and the shekel great and † Heb. perverting the balances of deceit falsifying the balances by deceit 6 That we may buy the poor for * Chap. 2.6 silver and the needy for a pair of shoes yea and sell the refuse of the wheat 7 The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob Surely I will never forget any of their works 8 Shall not the land tremble for this and every one mourn that dwelleth therein and it shall rise up wholly as a floud and it shall be cast out and drowned as by the floud of Egypt 9 And it shall come to pass in that day saith the Lord GOD that I will cause the sun to go down at noon and I will darken the earth in the clear day 10 And I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loyns and baldness upon every head and I will make it as the mourning of an onely son and the end thereof as a bitter day 11 ¶ Behold the days come saith the Lord GOD that I will send a famine in the land not a famine of bread nor a thirst for water but of hearing the words of the LORD 12 And they shall wander from sea to sea and from the north even to the east they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD and shall not finde it 13 In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst 14 They that swear by the sin of Samaria and say Thy god O Dan liveth and the manner of Beer-sheba liveth even they shall fall and never rise up again CHAP. IX 1 The certainty of the desolation 11 The restoring of the tabernacle of David I Saw the Lord standing upon the altar and he said Smite the ‖ Or chapiter or knop lintel of the door that the posts may shake and ‖ Or wound them cut them in the head all of them and I will slay the last of them with the sword he that fleeth of them shall not flee away and he that escapeth of them shall not be delivered 2 * Psal 139.8 c. VI. 1 Holofernes despiseth God 7 He threatneth Achior and sendeth him away 14 The Bethulians receive and bear him 18 They fall to prayer and comfort Achior ANd when the tumult of men that were about the council was ceased Holofernes the chief captain of the army of Assur said unto Achior and all the Moabites before all the company of other nations 2 And who art thou Achior and the hirelings of Ephraim that thou hast prophesied amongst us as to day and hast said that we should not make war with the people of Israel because their God will defend them and who is God but Nabuchodonosor 3 He will send his power and will destroy them from the face of the earth and their God shall not deliver them but we his servants will destroy them as one man for they are not able to sustain the power of our horses 4 For with them we will tread them under foot and their mountains shall be drunken with their bloud and their fields shall be filled with their dead bodies and their footsteps shall not be able to stand before us for they shall utterly perish saith king Nabuchodonosor lord of all the earth for he said None of my words shall be in vain 5 And thou Achior an hireling of Ammon which hast spoken these words in the day of thine iniquity shalt see my face no more from this day until I take vengeance of this nation that came out of Egypt 6 And then shall the sword of mine army and the multitude of them that serve me pass through thy sides and thou shalt fall among their slain when I return 7 Now therefore my servants shall bring thee back into the hill-countrey and shall set thee in one of the cities of the passages 8 And thou shalt not perish till thou be destroyed with them 9 And if thou perswade thy self in thy minde that they shall not be taken let not thy countenance fall I have spoken it and none of my words shall be in vain 10 Then Holofernes commanded his servants that waited in his tent to take Achior and bring him to Bethulia and deliver him into the hands of the children of Israel 11 So his servants took him and brought him out of the camp into the plain and they went from the midst of the plain into the hill-countrey and came unto the fountains that were under Bethulia 12 And when the men of the city
full of the holy Ghost retumed from Jordan and was led by the spirit into the wilderness 2 Being fourty days tempted of the devil and in those days he did eat nothing and when they were ended he afterward hungred 3 And the devil said unto him It thou be the Son of God command this stone that it be made bread 4 And Jesus answered him saying It is written That man shall not live by bread alone but by every word of God 5 And the devil taking him up into an high mountain shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time 6 And the devil said unto him All this power will I give thee and the glory of them for that is delivered unto me and to whomsoever I will I give it 7 If thou therefore wilt ‖ Or fall down before me worship me all shall be thine 8 And Jesus answered and said unto him Get thee behinde me Satan for it is written Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and him onely shalt thou serve 9 And he brought him to Jerusalem and set him on a pinacle of the temple Josephs son 23 And he said unto them Ye will surely say unto me this proverb Physician heal thyself whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum do also here in thy countrey 24 And he said Verily I say
