do_v hereof_o come_v it_o that_o the_o learn_a man_n be_v deceive_v in_o particular_n because_o they_o rest_v in_o their_o general_a knowledge_n example_n of_o admonition_n we_o have_v general_a rule_n to_o teach_v we_o to_o admonish_v but_o when_o we_o come_v to_o practice_v in_o particular_n then_o must_v we_o either_o have_v the_o new_a grace_n of_o god_n or_o else_o we_o shall_v fail_v in_o the_o practice_n if_o this_o man_n that_o believe_v pray_v thus_o how_o much_o more_o ought_v they_o that_o believe_v not_o and_o they_o that_o believe_v general_o must_v confess_v their_o blindness_n in_o particular_n and_o therefore_o they_o shall_v pray_v for_o it_o although_o ignorance_n be_v help_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o altogether_o cure_v therefore_o have_v we_o need_v to_o pray_v second_o because_o our_o knowledge_n be_v in_o general_n but_o practice_n be_v in_o particular_n and_o therein_o must_v we_o have_v a_o new_a assistance_n therefore_o when_o we_o have_v not_o good_a success_n in_o our_o business_n we_o must_v not_o as_o man_n be_v wont_a lay_v the_o fault_n on_o this_o or_o that_o but_o we_o must_v see_v the_o cause_n in_o ourselves_o
in_o the_o first_o and_o six_o verse_n with_o prayer_n couch_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o portion_n it_o be_v a_o marvelous_a strange_a thing_n that_o one_o thing_n shall_v be_v so_o often_o repeat_v as_o this_o to_o commend_v still_o god_n law_n and_o to_o pray_v still_o to_o be_v teach_v in_o the_o same_o this_o proceed_v from_o the_o comfort_n which_o he_o feel_v in_o the_o word_n fruit_n wherefore_o see_v experience_n have_v teach_v we_o thus_o much_o we_o must_v learn_v that_o we_o can_v neither_o see_v the_o comfort_n of_o our_o seek_n after_o god_n nor_o our_o calamity_n man_n to_o have_v be_v learn_v long_o ago_o and_o belch_v out_o in_o time_n of_o popery_n and_o that_o it_o be_v no_o new_a thing_n but_o a_o say_n very_o well_o know_v but_o when_o we_o look_v into_o the_o several_a practice_n of_o man_n which_o be_v the_o righteous_a judge_n of_o all_o man_n judgement_n we_o shall_v find_v man_n to_o be_v far_o from_o any_o inward_a faith_n show_v in_o such_o fruit_n this_o make_v the_o prophet_n to_o swear_v in_o that_o he_o see_v on_o one_o side_n his_o happiness_n so_o great_a in_o the_o word_n &_o the_o corruption_n of_o his_o heart_n on_o the_o other_o side_n and_o in_o meditate_v day_n and_o night_n in_o god_n law_n and_o consider_v his_o righteous_a judgement_n he_o say_v in_o truth_n thy_o word_n be_v a_o lantern_n etc._n etc._n if_o we_o will_v look_v into_o ourselves_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o those_o thing_n which_o seem_v to_o be_v most_o easy_o believe_v be_v further_a from_o faith_n and_o that_o thing_n most_o easy_a to_o be_v learn_v be_v further_a from_o practice_n true_a it_o be_v that_o every_o man_n will_v say_v who_o will_v not_o believe_v this_o what_o a_o beast_n be_v he_o that_o will_v deny_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n word_n but_o alas_o our_o careless_a read_n our_o rare_a meditate_v our_o cold_a pray_v and_o praise_v of_o god_n for_o his_o word_n our_o seldom_o conference_n of_o the_o word_n will_v testify_v against_o we_o in_o time_n to_o come_v that_o we_o never_o true_o believe_v we_o must_v first_o look_v and_o note_v ourselves_o and_o then_o we_o shall_v profit_v somewhat_o more_o the_o man_n of_o god_n oppose_v here_o the_o word_n to_o man_n wisdom_n which_o he_o have_v mention_v in_o the_o verse_n go_v before_o as_o light_n be_v contrary_a to_o darkness_n for_o as_o in_o darkness_n light_a out_o of_o darkness_n to_o reveal_v the_o light_n into_o their_o dark_a conscience_n they_o shall_v know_v that_o when_o light_n come_v unto_o they_o they_o darkness_n refuse_v it_o and_o that_o they_o be_v lover_n of_o darkness_n more_o than_o of_o light_n but_o he_o that_o work_v all_o thing_n mighty_o iâ—_n all_o man_n must_v show_v this_o light_n unto_o their_o darkness_n because_o their_o harvest_n many_o will_v think_v that_o this_o prayer_n of_o the_o man_n of_o god_n be_v superfluous_a but_o if_o they_o true_o know_v their_o own_o decay_n of_o faith_n and_o shrink_v in_o so_o to_o provide_v for_o our_o unbelief_n and_o disobedience_n and_o as_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v here_o set_v down_o the_o glass_n of_o regeneration_n and_o teach_v we_o how_o to_o pray_v for_o the_o continuance_n of_o our_o obedience_n and_o strength_n of_o faith_n so_o we_o must_v so_o behold_v our_o corruption_n therein_o as_o from_o henceforth_o we_o may_v have_v a_o great_a jealousy_n of_o ourselves_o in_o they_o both_o we_o learn_v in_o these_o two_o prayer_n how_o contrary_a to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o sophister_n he_o crave_v knowledge_n not_o of_o desert_n or_o merit_n jewel_n upon_o they_o who_o vouchsafe_v not_o to_o ask_v they_o for_o see_v the_o thing_n which_o he_o promise_v in_o his_o word_n be_v no_o small_a thing_n but_o such_o as_o the_o eye_n have_v not_o see_v the_o ear_n hear_v tongue_n express_v nor_o heart_n conceive_v shall_v we_o think_v to_o come_v to_o they_o by_o shut_v our_o eye_n by_o make_v dull_a our_o ear_n by_o close_v up_o our_o mouth_n here_o pray_v for_o understanding_n have_v he_o not_o often_o pray_v for_o it_o before_o be_v he_o a_o novice_n in_o knowledge_n be_v a_o prophet_n do_v not_o our_o saviour_n christ_n reprove_v reprehend_v repetition_n and_o babble_n in_o prayer_n true_a it_o be_v our_o saviour_n christ_n do_v reprehend_v that_o babble_a which_o be_v without_o faith_n and_o knowledge_n and_o a_o feel_n of_o our_o want_n but_o he_o speak_v not_o against_o these_o serious_a and_o often_o repetition_n which_o proceed_v from_o a_o plentiful_a knowledge_n abundant_a faith_n and_o lively_a feel_n of_o our_o necessity_n again_o although_o it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o he_o be_v a_o man_n of_o god_n and_o have_v receive_v great_a grace_n yet_o god_n give_v knowledge_n to_o his_o dear_a saint_n in_o this_o life_n but_o in_o part_n and_o the_o most_o which_o we_o see_v and_o know_v be_v the_o least_o thing_n which_o we_o see_v not_o nor_o know_v beside_o when_o we_o have_v knowledge_n and_o knowledge_n must_v be_v bring_v into_o practice_n we_o shall_v find_v such_o difficulty_n such_o wawardnes_n such_o forgetfulness_n such_o want_n that_o although_o we_o have_v have_v with_o the_o prophet_n a_o very_a good_a direction_n in_o the_o general_a thing_n of_o the_o word_n which_o be_v universal_a and_o few_o yet_o we_o shall_v find_v many_o distraction_n in_o our_o practice_n which_o must_v be_v particular_a and_o many_o and_o we_o shall_v either_o fail_v in_o memory_n by_o forgetfulness_n or_o in_o judgement_n by_o blindness_n or_o in_o affection_n by_o dulness_n so_o easy_o may_v we_o
