light_n of_o the_o world_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n do_v the_o scripture_n deny_v john_n baptist_n to_o be_v that_o light_n derive_v light_n be_v that_o which_o shine_v forth_o but_o yet_o be_v receive_v from_o another_o and_o so_o 35._o john_n baptist_n be_v a_o burn_a and_o a_o shine_a lamp_n so_o be_v the_o apostle_n light_n 6._o for_o god_n that_o cause_v the_o light_n to_o shine_v out_o of_o darkness_n shine_v into_o their_o heart_n to_o enable_v they_o to_o give_v the_o light_n of_o knowledge_n in_o the_o face_n of_o jesus_n christ._n and_o so_o must_v these_o word_n be_v understand_v that_o whereas_o the_o world_n natural_o sit_v in_o darkness_n and_o in_o the_o shadow_n of_o death_n the_o apostle_n by_o the_o light_n of_o their_o ministry_n be_v to_o shine_v unto_o they_o the_o use_n first_o this_o title_n of_o light_n give_v to_o minister_n show_v the_o right_a use_n of_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n the_o whole_a world_n lie_v in_o darkness_n that_o be_v in_o ignorance_n under_o sin_n and_o so_o subject_a to_o damnation_n by_o nature_n now_o god_n have_v ordain_v the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n to_o be_v a_o light_n whereby_o this_o ignorance_n may_v be_v expel_v and_o they_o bring_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o of_o the_o way_n that_o lead_v unto_o life_n act._n 26._o 18._o paul_n must_v preach_v that_o both_o jew_n and_o conscience_n which_o lead_v man_n to_o god_n again_o the_o hearer_n of_o the_o word_n must_v be_v admonish_v of_o their_o duty_n from_o this_o title_n first_o if_o minister_n be_v light_n in_o regard_n of_o their_o ministry_n than_o every_o hearer_n must_v so_o apply_v his_o heart_n unto_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n that_o it_o may_v enlighten_v his_o conscience_n with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o of_o his_o misery_n by_o reason_n of_o they_o as_o also_o with_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n which_o may_v guide_v he_o in_o obedience_n otherwise_o this_o holy_a ordinance_n turn_v to_o his_o deep_a condemnation_n second_o every_o hearer_n must_v learn_v paul_n lesson_n ephes._n 5._o 8._o you_o be_v once_o darkness_n but_o now_o you_o be_v light_a in_o the_o lord_n walk_v as_o child_n of_o the_o light_n that_o be_v look_v what_o the_o word_n teach_v which_o be_v this_o light_n that_o do_v when_o the_o time_n be_v man_n in_o this_o call_n can_v without_o great_a sin_n hide_v the_o gift_n and_o talent_n which_o god_n have_v give_v they_o for_o they_o be_v as_o light_v candle_n which_o must_v not_o be_v put_v under_o a_o bushel_n sundry_a man_n have_v heretofore_o offend_v this_o way_n as_o those_o in_o the_o primitive_a church_n who_o be_v godly_a man_n and_o well_o qualify_v for_o the_o ministry_n do_v yet_o withdraw_v themselves_o from_o public_a society_n to_o live_v in_o solitary_a place_n for_o by_o their_o gift_n they_o be_v excellent_a light_n and_o therefore_o they_o ought_v to_o have_v
shine_v forth_o to_o other_o and_o at_o this_o day_n they_o offend_v this_o way_n that_o will_v not_o abase_v themselves_o in_o their_o ministry_n to_o speak_v plain_o to_o the_o meancapacitie_n of_o the_o simple_a yea_o they_o also_o put_v the_o light_n under_o a_o bushel_n who_o be_v fit_a for_o this_o ministry_n do_v spend_v their_o day_n whole_o in_o the_o university_n except_o it_o be_v that_o they_o want_v a_o call_n into_o the_o church_n and_o have_v a_o lawful_a call_n for_o their_o stay_n in_o the_o university_n and_o though_o man_n have_v not_o such_o mean_n of_o call_v forth_o as_o be_v to_o be_v wish_v yet_o they_o that_o live_v in_o school_n of_o learning_n aught_o to_o show_v themselves_o willing_a to_o become_v light_n abroad_o in_o the_o church_n say_v with_o the_o prophet_n isaie_v when_o his_o lip_n be_v touch_v with_o a_o coal_n from_o the_o altar_n 8._o here_o be_o i_o lord_n send_v i_o in_o a_o word_n all_o person_n in_o this_o call_n that_o any_o way_n hide_v their_o gift_n be_v here_o blame_v for_o they_o be_v light_n which_o shall_v not_o be_v hide_v from_o these_o comparison_n wherein_o christ_n set_v out_o the_o open_a state_n of_o his_o apostle_n to_o the_o view_n of_o the_o world_n the_o papist_n do_v gather_v that_o the_o place_n church_n of_o god_n can_v be_v hide_v and_o therefore_o visibilitie_n must_v needs_o be_v the_o note_n of_o a_o true_a church_n but_o we_o must_v know_v that_o god_n church_n may_v sometime_o lie_v hide_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o word_n and_o the_o ministry_n thereof_o as_o it_o do_v in_o the_o day_n of_o 10_o elias_n and_o in_o the_o time_n when_o popery_n spread_v it_o self_n over_o these_o western_a part_n neither_o do_v this_o place_n make_v aught_o against_o we_o for_o christ_n here_o speak_v of_o his_o apostle_n and_o of_o their_o ministry_n proper_o which_o can_v not_o be_v hide_v and_o not_o of_o every_o ordinary_a minister_n who_o be_v not_o light_n of_o all_o the_o world_n as_o the_o apostle_n be_v but_o only_o in_o their_o particular_a stand_n second_o the_o ministry_n be_v a_o light_n yet_o not_o always_o shine_v to_o the_o whole_a world_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v add_v in_o the_o second_o similitude_n that_o it_o give_v light_a to_o they_o that_o be_v in_o the_o house_n that_o be_v in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o so_o in_o the_o darkness_n of_o popery_n the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v hide_v from_o the_o world_n and_o yet_o it_o give_v some_o light_n to_o the_o hide_a church_n the_o house_n of_o god_n to_o show_v they_o their_o calling_n and_o the_o mean_n of_o salvation_n now_o as_o these_o similitude_n concern_v the_o minister_n so_o they_o may_v well_o be_v enlarge_v to_o every_o christian_a in_o his_o place_n for_o in_o this_o regard_n the_o minister_n be_v a_o pattern_n to_o his_o people_n and_o many_o time_n in_o scripture_n other_o beside_o the_o minister_n be_v call_v light_n 2._o sam._n 21._o 17._o david_n be_v call_v the_o light_n of_o israel_n not_o only_o for_o the_o comfort_n of_o his_o regiment_n but_o also_o as_o he_o be_v a_o king_n by_o his_o upright_a life_n he_o give_v light_n to_o the_o people_n whereof_o he_o be_v governor_n and_o so_o answerable_o all_o superior_n in_o their_o place_n must_v be_v light_n the_o public_a magistrate_n to_o the_o common_a wealth_n the_o master_n to_o his_o servant_n parent_n to_o their_o child_n and_o every_o christian_a to_o his_o brother_n philip._n 2._o 5._o shine_v as_o light_n in_o the_o world_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o naughty_a and_o crooked_a nation_n this_o therefore_o be_v our_o duty_n if_o we_o be_v christian_n as_o we_o must_v labour_v to_o get_v the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n will_v into_o our_o heart_n so_o must_v we_o cause_v the_o power_n thereof_o to_o shine_v forth_o in_o the_o example_n of_o a_o good_a life_n whereby_o other_o may_v be_v direct_v in_o the_o darkness_n of_o this_o world_n but_o alas_o here_o in_o the_o case_n of_o many_o be_v lamentable_a who_o through_o ignorance_n and_o disobedience_n be_v yet_o in_o darkness_n these_o must_v be_v take_v out_o of_o their_o place_n as_o dark_a candle_n and_o tread_v under_o foot_n and_o so_o cast_v into_o eternal_a darkness_n where_o they_o shall_v flame_v in_o woe_n for_o evermore_o vers._n 16._o let_v your_o light_n so_o shine_v before_o man_n that_o they_o may_v see_v your_o good_a work_n and_o glorify_v your_o father_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n this_o be_v the_o conclusion_n of_o this_o reason_n where_o by_o shine_v be_v mean_v ministerial_a teach_n whereby_o they_o make_v know_v god_n will_v unto_o his_o people_n wherewith_o he_o also_o require_v answerable_a practice_n in_o a_o godly_a life_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v see_v by_o your_o call_n you_o be_v so_o wherein_o observe_v two_o point_n touch_v the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n first_o in_o what_o manner_n minister_n must_v teach_v the_o word_n second_o the_o end_n of_o all_o teach_n for_o the_o first_o god_n word_n must_v first_o be_v preach_v that_o man_n may_v hear_v it_o second_o therewith_o must_v go_v a_o unblameable_a conversation_n bring_v forth_o good_a work_n that_o man_n therein_o may_v see_v the_o will_n of_o god_n here_o then_o be_v two_o part_n of_o a_o minister_n office_n office_n doctrine_n and_o good_a life_n and_o they_o must_v go_v together_o in_o he_o that_o be_v a_o good_a minister_n he_o that_o teach_v to_o write_v will_v first_o give_v rule_n of_o write_v to_o his_o scholar_n and_o then_o set_v they_o copy_n to_o follow_v and_o so_o do_v every_o master_n in_o his_o art_n there_o be_v no_o learning_n of_o any_o thing_n unless_o example_n go_v with_o rule_n again_o god_n will_v have_v man_n to_o learn_v his_o will_n two_o way_n by_o hear_v and_o see_v the_o minister_n therefore_o that_o be_v to_o teach_v god_n will_n must_v not_o only_o by_o doctrine_n instruct_v the_o ear_n but_o by_o a_o godly_a life_n exemplify_v his_o doctrine_n unto_o the_o eye_n 1._o tim._n 4._o 12._o be_v unto_o they_o that_o believe_v a_o example_n in_o word_n and_o in_o conversation_n in_o regard_n of_o this_o double_a charge_n that_o lie_v on_o every_o minister_n the_o people_n use_v for_o their_o part_n must_v remember_v in_o all_o their_o prayer_n to_o â—rave_v of_o god_n that_o the_o minister_n may_v be_v enable_v to_o teach_v god_n will_n both_o in_o doctrine_n and_o life_n the_o apostle_n paul_n do_v sundry_a time_n require_v the_o church_n to_o who_o he_o write_v to_o pray_v for_o he_o in_o regard_n of_o his_o 1._o ministry_n now_o if_o so_o worthy_a a_o apostle_n have_v need_v to_o be_v pray_v for_o much_o more_o have_v every_o ordinary_a minister_n in_o god_n church_n and_o great_a reason_n it_o shall_v be_v so_o for_o the_o devil_n stand_v 1._o at_o jehoshuahs_n right_a hand_n to_o resist_v he_o 18._o he_o hinder_v paul_n from_o come_v to_o the_o thessalonian_n though_o he_o malign_v every_o believer_n yet_o he_o aim_v especial_o at_o the_o minister_n that_o he_o may_v cause_v he_o to_o fail_v if_o not_o in_o teach_v yet_o at_o least_o in_o the_o exemplify_a of_o his_o doctrine_n by_o a_o sincere_a and_o godly_a conversation_n now_o because_o christ_n require_v of_o every_o minister_n beside_o teach_v the_o evidence_n of_o good_a work_n in_o a_o godly_a life_n therefore_o here_o i_o will_v handle_v this_o point_n of_o good_a work_n and_o first_o show_v what_o a_o good_a work_n be_v second_o work_n the_o difference_n of_o good_a work_n and_o then_o observe_v the_o necessity_n the_o dignity_n and_o use_v of_o good_a work_n i._o point_n a_o good_a work_n be_v a_o work_n command_v of_o god_n and_o do_v by_o a_o describe_v man_n regenerate_v in_o faith_n for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n in_o man_n good_a first_o i_o say_v it_o be_v a_o work_n command_v of_o god_n for_o god_n will_v be_v goodness_n itself_o and_o the_o rule_n of_o all_o goodness_n in_o the_o creature_n and_o every_o good_a thing_n be_v therefore_o good_a because_o it_o be_v answerable_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n no_o work_n therefore_o can_v be_v good_a unless_o it_o be_v appoint_v ordain_v and_o command_v of_o god_n man_n indeed_o may_v invent_v and_o do_v many_o good_a work_n but_o they_o shall_v have_v no_o goodness_n in_o they_o unless_o they_o do_v accord_n with_o god_n wil._n again_o good_a work_n must_v be_v do_v in_o
occasion_n of_o sin_n give_v by_o other_o that_o thereby_o he_o may_v enter_v into_o they_o for_o the_o destruction_n of_o their_o soul_n we_o therefore_o must_v endeavour_v as_o paul_n do_v 16._o to_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n in_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v to_o keep_v ourselves_o pure_a and_o uncorrupt_a from_o all_o the_o occasion_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o world_n with_o a_o watchful_a eye_n against_o offence_n must_v walk_v on_o in_o that_o way_n that_o lead_v unto_o life_n eschew_v these_o stumble_a block_n which_o the_o devil_n cast_v in_o our_o way_n by_o other_o man_n and_o so_o shall_v we_o obey_v this_o good_a counsel_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ._n the_o second_o kind_n of_o occasion_n of_o sin_n give_v be_v those_o which_o a_o man_n give_v give_v unto_o himself_o and_o they_o arise_v either_o from_o his_o affection_n or_o from_o his_o imagination_n from_o man_n affection_n arise_v so_o many_o occasion_n of_o sin_n as_o affection_n there_o be_v corrupt_a affection_n in_o he_o as_o from_o corrupt_a desire_n arise_v covetousness_n which_o be_v so_o great_a a_o occasion_n of_o sin_n that_o the_o apostle_n call_v it_o 10_o the_o root_n of_o all_o evil_a this_o draw_v man_n heart_n so_o much_o to_o the_o world_n that_o he_o can_v spare_v no_o time_n for_o the_o mean_n of_o his_o salvation_n herewith_o he_o be_v so_o choke_v that_o he_o never_o think_v heart_n show_v that_o the_o corrupt_a motion_n thereof_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o much_o sin_n unto_o he_o and_o a_o most_o dangerous_a mean_n for_o the_o ruin_n of_o his_o soul_n in_o regard_v whereof_o here_o also_o we_o must_v snow_v how_o this_o eye_n may_v be_v pluck_v rule_n out_o and_o this_o hand_n cut_v off_o that_o be_v by_o what_o mean_v we_o may_v reform_v our_o heart_n and_o stay_v the_o rage_n of_o our_o affection_n that_o they_o cause_v we_o not_o to_o sin_n the_o way_n be_v this_o we_o must_v mortify_v and_o crucify_v our_o unruly_a affection_n and_o corrupt_a desire_n and_o for_o this_o end_n we_o must_v put_v in_o practice_n three_o duty_n first_o we_o must_v believe_v that_o we_o be_v crucify_v with_o christ_n that_o mean_n be_v as_o we_o conceive_v ourselves_o to_o be_v in_o christ_n by_o faith_n whereby_o we_o have_v 1_o communion_n with_o he_o so_o we_o must_v conceive_v that_o this_o communion_n with_o christ_n be_v in_o his_o death_n and_o burial_n so_o as_o our_o sinful_a nature_n with_o all_o our_o corrupt_a affection_n be_v nail_v to_o his_o cross_n and_o bury_v in_o his_o grave_n as_o the_o apostle_n show_v at_o large_a rom._n 6._o 3_o 4._o etc._n etc._n now_o when_o this_o persuasion_n shall_v take_v place_n in_o our_o heart_n it_o will_v by_o god_n grace_n keep_v we_o from_o yield_v to_o corrupt_v motion_n and_o desire_n and_o move_v we_o to_o labour_v to_o subdue_v they_o daily_o for_o herein_o stand_v our_o assurance_n that_o we_o have_v fellowship_n with_o christ_n when_o we_o have_v fellowship_n in_o his_o death_n and_o the_o first_o be_v a_o inward_a conceit_n of_o perfect_a knowledge_n 1._o touch_v man_n duty_n to_o god_n and_o the_o way_n of_o his_o salvation_n that_o this_o be_v a_o common_a conceit_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o ignorant_a especial_o may_v appear_v by_o this_o common_a speech_n of_o they_o that_o they_o know_v as_o much_o as_o any_o preacher_n can_v teach_v they_o for_o the_o sum_n of_o all_o say_v they_o be_v to_o love_n god_n above_o all_o and_o my_o neighbour_n as_o myself_o &_o to_o believe_v to_o be_v save_v by_o christ_n now_o this_o they_o know_v as_o well_o as_o the_o best_a and_o hereupon_o they_o become_v contemner_n of_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n the_o ordinary_a mean_n of_o their_o salvation_n as_o of_o a_o thing_n needless_a and_o superfluous_a this_o conceit_n be_v common_a among_o we_o and_o do_v much_o hurt_n to_o many_o a_o man_n soul_n the_o way_n to_o cut_v it_o off_o be_v this_o the_o vain_a man_n that_o be_v puff_v up_o with_o remedy_n this_o conceit_n must_v examine_v himself_o touch_n his_o knowledge_n whether_o it_o knowledge_n be_v sufficient_a to_o his_o salvation_n and_o for_o this_o end_n he_o must_v make_v inquiry_n in_o himself_o for_o these_o two_o thing_n first_o whether_o he_o see_v his_o own_o natural_a 1_o blindness_n and_o whether_o he_o be_v move_v thereby_o to_o labour_n for_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o will_n where_o this_o be_v want_v there_o be_v nothing_o but_o a_o vain_a conceit_n of_o knowledge_n second_o whether_o his_o knowledge_n 2_o be_v join_v with_o conversion_n of_o heart_n from_o sin_n unto_o god_n and_o with_o reformation_n of_o life_n from_o evil_a to_o good_a this_o change_n of_o heart_n and_o life_n go_v with_o all_o save_a knowledge_n now_o if_o these_o be_v want_v as_o undoubted_o they_o be_v in_o all_o vain_a person_n then_o be_v their_o knowledge_n so_o far_o from_o be_v save_v knowledge_n profitable_a to_o salvation_n that_o it_o rather_o turn_v to_o their_o deep_a condemnation_n the_o second_o imagination_n in_o man_n occasion_v he_o to_o sin_n be_v the_o 2_o persuasion_n of_o his_o strong_a faith_n the_o more_o ignorant_a sort_n that_o want_v both_o faith_n and_o repentance_n will_v thus_o brag_v of_o
say_v there_o be_v a_o god_n and_o this_o god_n be_v to_o be_v worship_v to_o be_v love_v and_o fear_v and_o that_o we_o must_v love_v our_o neighbour_n as_o ourselves_o and_o live_v well_o they_o seek_v no_o further_o and_o yet_o if_o a_o man_n be_v bring_v up_o in_o the_o wilderness_n he_o may_v see_v all_o this_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n the_o wicked_a eye_n see_v thus_o much_o but_o we_o must_v not_o content_v ourselves_o herewith_o for_o if_o there_o be_v no_o more_o the_o life_n be_v full_a of_o darkness_n still_o and_o the_o soul_n may_v go_v to_o utter_v darkness_n with_o all_o this_o we_o therefore_o must_v remember_v to_o get_v the_o single_a eye_n else_o we_o be_v no_o scholar_n in_o the_o school_n of_o christ._n indeed_o some_o plead_v that_o preacher_n can_v say_v no_o more_o in_o effect_n but_o this_o love_n god_n above_o all_o and_o thy_o neighbour_n as_o thyself_o but_o these_o man_n know_v not_o what_o they_o say_v blessing_n themselves_o in_o their_o ignorance_n they_o must_v know_v that_o grace_n must_v be_v put_v to_o nature_n and_o sanctify_v it_o and_o spiritual_a knowledge_n join_v with_o natural_a or_o else_o we_o remain_v with_o the_o wicked_a eye_n if_o we_o have_v no_o more_o but_o a_o general_a confuse_a knowledge_n in_o moral_a point_n that_o serve_v not_o to_o save_v we_o but_o to_o make_v we_o without_o excuse_n at_o the_o last_o day_n again_o another_o common_a fault_n worthy_a reproof_n be_v this_o that_o man_n content_v themselves_o with_o natural_a reformation_n they_o will_v grant_v that_o god_n be_v to_o be_v worship_v and_o love_v that_o we_o must_v live_v well_o deal_v just_o and_o love_v our_o neighbour_n but_o the_o blind_a eye_n see_v thus_o much_o the_o mere_a civil_a man_n will_v go_v thus_o far_o and_o yet_o his_o life_n be_v nothing_o but_o darkness_n all_o this_o reformation_n be_v but_o natural_a we_o therefore_o must_v labour_v for_o renew_a heart_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o reform_a liveâ—_n according_a to_o the_o gospel_n for_o howsoever_o a_o civil_a conversation_n may_v commend_v we_o unto_o man_n yet_o it_o will_v not_o save_v we_o in_o the_o day_n of_o the_o lord_n three_o be_v this_o evil_a eye_n in_o every_o one_o by_o nature_n then_o beware_v we_o be_v salvation_n not_o wise_a in_o ourselves_o and_o from_o ourselves_o in_o matter_n of_o salvation_n herein_o of_o god_n and_o yet_o every_o one_o of_o these_o look_n to_o be_v save_v in_o their_o religion_n each_o one_o of_o these_o have_v a_o different_a manner_n of_o worship_v god_n and_o all_o swerve_v from_o the_o true_a worship_n and_o yet_o they_o all_o persuade_v themselves_o that_o god_n be_v well_o please_v with_o their_o service_n and_o thus_o it_o go_v with_o natural_a man_n among_o uâ—_n though_o otherwise_o sufficient_o wise_a for_o worldly_a thing_n they_o resolve_v upon_o their_o own_o course_n for_o the_o salvation_n of_o their_o soul_n let_v the_o preacher_n say_v what_o he_o will_v some_o think_v if_o they_o repent_v at_o their_o end_n and_o then_o commend_v their_o soul_n to_o god_n it_o be_v sufficient_a other_o look_v to_o be_v save_v by_o their_o welldoing_a and_o god_n word_n and_o promise_n thus_o by_o their_o own_o wisdom_n will_v man_n be_v save_v and_o hereby_o the_o devil_n destroy_v many_o a_o soul_n but_o let_v god_n be_v wise_a and_o every_o man_n a_o fool_n and_o let_v we_o submit_v ourselves_o in_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n whole_o to_o be_v rule_v and_o guide_v by_o his_o write_a word_n lest_o jewish_o and_o popish_o we_o go_v about_o to_o establish_v our_o own_o conceit_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o salvation_n do_v plunge_v our_o soul_n into_o the_o pit_n of_o destruction_n four_o be_v the_o eye_n of_o the_o mind_n natural_o corrupt_a then_o must_v we_o seek_v labour_v for_o a_o better_a eye_n that_o be_v the_o eye_n of_o faith_n by_o which_o we_o rely_v on_o god_n mercy_n for_o our_o salvation_n and_o on_o his_o providence_n for_o all_o needful_a thing_n in_o life_n and_o death_n this_o eye_n make_v supply_v to_o that_o which_o be_v want_v to_o natural_a knowledge_n hereby_o we_o discern_v right_o of_o god_n and_o of_o ourselves_o this_o enable_v we_o to_o see_v afar_o off_o yea_o hereby_o we_o see_v thing_n invisible_a for_o it_o be_v the_o evidence_n of_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o see_v heb._n 11._o 1._o hereby_o abraham_n see_v the_o day_n of_o christ_n and_o be_v glad_a joh._n 8._o 58._o and_o all_o the_o patriarch_n see_v the_o promise_n of_o god_n afar_o off_o heb._n 11._o 13._o this_o will_v enable_v we_o to_o walk_v in_o their_o step_n towards_o the_o heavenly_a city_n and_o therefore_o let_v we_o get_v this_o faith_n that_o so_o become_v child_n of_o the_o promise_n we_o may_v be_v count_v for_o the_o seed_n and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o wicked_a eye_n the_o three_o kind_n of_o eye_n be_v the_o blind_a eye_n which_o be_v set_v out_o with_o the_o fruit_n eye_n thereof_o in_o these_o word_n wherefore_o if_o the_o light_n that_o be_v in_o thou_o be_v darkness_n how_o great_a be_v that_o darkness_n for_o the_o better_a discern_v of_o the_o state_n of_o man_n with_o this_o blind_a eye_n we_o must_v see_v what_o be_v mean_v by_o light_n and_o also_o by_o darkness_n by_o light_n be_v mean_v that_o knowledge_n of_o god_n of_o justice_n &_o of_o good_a and_o evil_a which_o be_v in_o the_o mind_n by_o nature_n now_o though_o this_o can_v be_v quite_o put_v out_o for_o the_o most_o wicked_a wretch_n and_o the_o very_a atheist_n that_o live_v have_v some_o conscience_n remain_v which_o be_v a_o work_n of_o this_o light_n yet_o it_o may_v be_v so_o bury_v and_o cover_v that_o no_o light_n shall_v appear_v nor_o any_o use_n be_v make_v of_o it_o and_o then_o be_v it_o say_v to_o be_v darkness_n which_o be_v the_o state_n of_o those_o that_o be_v give_v up_o to_o a_o reprobate_a sense_n as_o when_o a_o man_n deny_v there_o be_v a_o god_n or_o that_o the_o scripture_n be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n or_o such_o like_a in_o these_o man_n natural_a light_n be_v become_v darkness_n and_o the_o cause_n of_o this_o change_n in_o they_o be_v their_o corrupt_a will_n and_o rebellious_a affection_n which_o overrule_a natural_a knowledge_n and_o conscience_n cause_n man_n to_o give_v themselves_o to_o actual_a sin_n whereby_o at_o length_n they_o come_v to_o commit_v sin_n greedy_o and_o without_o remorse_n yea_o even_o against_o conscience_n and_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n and_o so_o bury_v they_o both_o in_o such_o sort_n that_o they_o have_v no_o more_o use_n of_o they_o then_o if_o they_o be_v quite_o put_v out_o now_o where_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n be_v thus_o put_v out_o the_o fruit_n of_o it_o be_v most_o etc_n palpable_a darkness_n how_o great_a be_v that_o darkness_n that_o be_v there_o be_v nothing_o in_o that_o man_n life_n but_o brutish_a confusion_n in_o hellish_a action_n of_o pride_n covetousness_n envy_n blasphemy_n and_o unnatural_a uncleanness_n as_o rom._n 1._o 27_o 29_o etc._n etc._n the_o use._n consider_v the_o light_n of_o nature_n may_v be_v thus_o put_v out_o we_o vileness_n must_v hereby_o be_v admonish_v first_o to_o enter_v into_o a_o serious_a consideration_n of_o our_o own_o vileness_n for_o natural_o we_o have_v in_o we_o even_o the_o best_a of_o we_o all_o such_o rebellious_a lust_n and_o damnable_a desire_n as_o unless_o they_o be_v restrain_v or_o renew_v by_o grace_n will_v darken_v and_o as_o good_a as_o put_v out_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n this_o shall_v make_v we_o vile_a in_o our_o own_o eye_n that_o nourish_v such_o corruption_n and_o esteem_v so_o of_o sin_n which_o will_v put_v out_o that_o light_n which_o yet_o adam_n fall_n leave_v in_o us._n second_o hereby_o we_o be_v admonish_v to_o have_v special_a care_n to_o mortify_v desire_n our_o corrupt_a desire_n and_o our_o unruly_a affection_n that_o else_o will_v extinguish_v in_o we_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n before_o the_o fall_n see_v that_o we_o may_v fail_v in_o the_o particular_n of_o that_o which_o we_o know_v in_o â—enenll_n again_o preach_v serve_v not_o only_o for_o the_o remove_n of_o ignorance_n and_o the_o increase_n of_o knowledge_n but_o to_o erect_v and_o build_v up_o good_a conscience_n and_o honest_a life_n by_o the_o in_o increase_n of_o faith_n repentance_n bue_v of_o god_n and_o man_n and_o of_o obedience_n and_o this_o use_v the_o most_o learned_a and_o godly_a man_n that_o ever_o be_v may_v make_v of_o the_o public_a ministry_n though_o dispense_v by_o one_o that_o be_v far_o inferior_a to_o he_o in_o knowledge_n and_o petty_a last_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v how_o this_o can_v be_v â—e_a sum_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o prophet_n to_o do_v as_o we_o will_v be_v do_v to_o with_o life_n the_o other_o destruction_n as_o hell_n it_o be_v say_v the_o narrow_a way_n lead_v to_o life_n the_o broadway_n to_o destruction_n by_o life_n here_o be_v mean_v a_o bless_a state_n of_o man_n peace_n and_o truth_n which_o be_v to_o we_o the_o day_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n we_o must_v labour_v serious_o to_o have_v our_o heart_n endue_v with_o some_o good_a measure_n of_o last_a grace_n as_o of_o faith_n hope_n and_o love_n which_o as_o good_a gold_n may_v abide_v the_o trial_n of_o affliction_n otherwise_o we_o shall_v not_o stand_v for_o all_o paint_a show_n of_o grace_n in_o time_n of_o trial_n will_v vanish_v away_o like_a dross_n and_o stubble_n before_o the_o fire_n the_o second_o point_n in_o this_o effect_n be_v the_o quality_n of_o this_o ruin_n and_o fall_v it_o be_v great_a and_o fearful_a it_o fall_v and_o the_o fall_n thereof_o be_v great_a the_o thing_n resemble_v hereby_o be_v most_o fearful_a to_o wit_n that_o such_o professor_n of_o religion_n as_o in_o the_o day_n of_o peace_n do_v not_o join_v practice_n with_o their_o profession_n shall_v fall_v away_o in_o the_o time_n of_o trial_n and_o come_v to_o most_o fearful_a perdition_n this_o be_v the_o principal_a point_n that_o christ_n here_o aim_v at_o whereby_o he_o intend_v to_o terrify_v man_n from_o dissemble_a profession_n and_o the_o consideration_n of_o it_o must_v work_v effectual_o in_o our_o heart_n for_o we_o by_o god_n mercy_n and_o blessing_n have_v have_v the_o light_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o many_o year_n together_o in_o such_o measure_n as_o never_o be_v in_o this_o land_n before_o and_o yet_o though_o all_o of_o we_o be_v hearer_n where_o be_v our_o obedience_n alas_o some_o among_o we_o grow_v to_o be_v flat_a and_o peremptory_a atheist_n deny_v god_n and_o christ_n jesus_n other_o and_o the_o most_o under_o the_o name_n of_o religion_n root_n their_o heart_n in_o the_o world_n some_o in_o profit_n and_o some_o in_o pleasure_n and_o none_o of_o these_o almost_o regard_v religion_n other_o profess_v religion_n and_o yet_o live_v in_o gross_a sin_n as_o swear_v drunkenness_n uncleanness_n etc._n etc._n make_v no_o conscience_n of_o gross_a impiety_n in_o their_o life_n so_o that_o if_o we_o look_v into_o the_o general_a state_n of_o our_o people_n we_o shall_v see_v that_o religion_n be_v profess_v but_o not_o obey_v nay_o obedience_n be_v count_v preciseness_n and_o so_o reproach_v but_o we_o must_v know_v that_o in_o the_o end_n this_o profane_v of_o religion_n will_v soon_o turn_v all_o god_n blessing_n temporal_a and_o spiritual_a into_o fearful_a curse_n both_o of_o body_n and_o soul_n if_o ever_o any_o thing_n bring_v ruin_n upon_o we_o it_o will_v be_v the_o contempt_n of_o god_n word_n profess_v and_o therefore_o let_v we_o in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n endeavour_v ourselves_o not_o only_o to_o know_v and_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o to_o turn_v unto_o god_n from_o all_o sin_n and_o especial_o in_o regard_n of_o this_o sin_n of_o disobedience_n to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n last_o christ_n note_v the_o quality_n of_o this_o fall_n to_o be_v exceed_o great_a to_o hypocrisy_n show_v unto_o we_o the_o great_a danger_n of_o hypocrisy_n for_o there_o be_v great_a difference_n between_o these_o three_o sort_n of_o man_n a_o sinner_n that_o make_v no_o profession_n of_o religion_n a_o hypocrite_n that_o make_v a_o great_a show_n of_o piety_n in_o profession_n and_o a_o true_a believer_n who_o life_n and_o conversation_n be_v answerable_a to_o his_o profession_n for_o a_o true_a professor_n may_v fall_v into_o sin_n very_o fearful_o as_o peter_n and_o david_n do_v and_o yet_o recover_v again_o also_o he_o that_o be_v a_o most_o notorious_a sinner_n as_o manasses_n be_v may_v be_v convert_v and_o repent_v but_o when_o a_o professor_n that_o be_v a_o hypocrite_n in_o religion_n be_v try_v he_o fall_v quite_o from_o christ_n and_o make_v apostasy_n from_o his_o profession_n and_o in_o this_o regard_n his_o fall_n be_v call_v great_a and_o therefore_o see_v professor_n may_v thus_o fearful_o fall_v away_o let_v we_o in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n labour_n in_o some_o truth_n of_o heart_n
