disobedient_a choice_n or_o practice_n for_o our_o inward_a thought_n and_o imagination_n be_v spring_n and_o principle_n both_o of_o our_o inward_a choice_n and_o also_o of_o our_o outward_a operation_n and_o the_o service_n which_o god_n require_v of_o they_o be_v the_o service_n of_o the_o principle_n he_o demand_v the_o obedience_n of_o our_o mind_n as_o a_o mean_n and_o in_o order_n to_o a_o further_a obedience_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o action_n he_o expect_v that_o we_o shall_v think_v so_o long_o and_o so_o often_o upon_o the_o absoluteness_n of_o his_o authority_n the_o kindness_n of_o his_o nature_n the_o reasonableness_n of_o his_o command_n the_o glory_n of_o his_o reward_n and_o the_o terror_n of_o his_o punishment_n till_o in_o our_o heart_n we_o choose_v those_o thing_n which_o he_o have_v command_v and_o perform_v they_o in_o our_o work_n and_o practice_n for_o our_o thought_n of_o he_o and_o of_o his_o law_n be_v not_o in_o themselves_o obedience_n but_o only_o a_o spring_n and_o principle_n of_o it_o and_o a_o good_a step_n and_o degree_n towards_o it_o our_o knowledge_n shall_v be_v judge_v a_o acceptable_a service_n as_o it_o carry_v we_o on_o to_o performance_n but_o no_o otherwise_o for_o hereby_o alone_o say_v saint_n t_o john_n we_o know_v that_o we_o know_v he_o with_o such_o knowledge_n as_o shall_v be_v accept_v by_o he_o if_o we_o keep_v his_o commandment_n 1_o john_n 2.3_o and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n our_o bare_a imagination_n and_o apprehension_n of_o some_o forbid_a sin_n be_v then_o only_o disobedient_a when_o they_o carry_v we_o on_o to_o choose_v or_o practice_v those_o thing_n that_o be_v sinful_a we_o must_v go_v on_o from_o thought_n to_o choice_n or_o practice_n before_o the_o vice_n think_v of_o become_v our_o own_o and_o our_o apprehension_n of_o sin_n become_v themselves_o sinful_a for_o the_o thought_n of_o sin_n have_v the_o sinfulness_n of_o mean_n and_o cause_n they_o be_v sinful_a so_o with_o she_o already_o in_o his_o heart_n ver_fw-la 28._o as_o for_o our_o thought_n and_o imagination_n then_o we_o see_v what_o obedience_n in_o they_o be_v require_v to_o our_o acceptance_n and_o when_o they_o be_v disobedient_a and_o will_v destroy_v we_o for_o our_o counsel_n and_o contrivance_n of_o evil_n be_v always_o sinful_a and_o so_o be_v all_o such_o simple_a thought_n and_o apprehension_n as_o have_v particular_a law_n impose_v upon_o they_o and_o as_o for_o our_o imagination_n and_o apprehension_n of_o thing_n command_v or_o forbid_v by_o any_o other_o law_n they_o be_v imperfect_a thing_n and_o not_o full_o grow_v up_o to_o the_o perfect_a stature_n either_o of_o obedience_n or_o of_o disobedience_n so_o that_o they_o be_v neither_o punish_v nor_o reward_v in_o themselves_o but_o so_o far_o only_o as_o they_o be_v cause_n and_o principle_n of_o a_o obedient_a or_o disobedient_a choice_n or_o action_n and_o then_o as_o for_o our_o affection_n their_o measure_n be_v the_o very_a same_o with_o those_o already_o mention_v of_o our_o bare_a imagination_n and_o simple_a apprehension_n for_o their_o service_n and_o obedience_n be_v that_o of_o the_o principle_n and_o their_o sentence_n shall_v be_v according_a to_o those_o effect_n either_o in_o our_o will_n or_o practice_n which_o flow_v from_o it_o if_o we_o love_v and_o desire_v obedience_n so_o far_o as_o to_o choose_v and_o act_v it_o this_o degree_n of_o affection_n will_v gain_v we_o god_n love_n and_o favour_n and_o secure_v his_o reward_n but_o less_o than_o it_o no_o other_o shall_v he_o that_o keep_v my_o commandment_n say_v christ_n he_o it_o be_v that_o love_v i_o and_o they_o only_a who_o so_o love_v i_o in_o obey_v i_o shall_v be_v belove_v again_o of_o my_o father_n make_v we_o perform_v it_o and_o never_o suffer_v they_o to_o issue_n out_o upon_o evil_a so_o far_o till_o they_o carry_v we_o on_o either_o to_o choose_v or_o practice_v it_o but_o beside_o these_o two_o faculty_n viz._n our_o mind_n and_o affection_n there_o be_v yet_o another_o who_o service_n be_v necessary_a to_o render_v we_o a_o acceptable_a obedience_n and_o that_o be_v three_o our_o heart_n or_o will_n also_o it_o be_v a_o absurd_a dream_n for_o any_o man_n to_o think_v of_o serve_v god_n without_o his_o will_n because_o without_o that_o none_o of_o his_o action_n can_v be_v call_v his_o own_o for_o that_o only_o be_v impute_v to_o we_o which_o be_v choose_v by_o we_o and_o which_o it_o be_v in_o the_o power_n of_o our_o own_o will_n either_o to_o promote_v or_o hinder_v no_o man_n deserve_v praise_n or_o be_v liable_a to_o answer_v for_o what_o he_o can_v not_o help_v but_o of_o all_o person_n god_n most_o of_o all_o regard_v our_o heart_n in_o all_o our_o act_n of_o it_o with_o certain_a end_n and_o design_n if_o we_o will_v be_v think_v to_o obey_v god_n law_n we_o must_v do_v it_o because_o he_o require_v it_o and_o if_o we_o be_v judge_v to_o have_v sin_v against_o it_o it_o will_v be_v for_o do_v something_o when_o we_o see_v that_o he_o have_v forbid_v it_o for_o that_o service_n which_o god_n require_v be_v not_o a_o heartless_a service_n but_o a_o service_n of_o the_o will_n and_o choice_n so_o that_o we_o must_v do_v what_o he_o enjoin_v for_o his_o sake_n and_o because_o his_o law_n require_v it_o if_o we_o expect_v that_o he_o his_o law_n be_v want_v although_o we_o choose_v the_o evil_a action_n yet_o do_v we_o not_o choose_v the_o sin_n because_o we_o do_v not_o see_v that_o it_o be_v sinful_a for_o we_o will_v not_o choose_v it_o if_o we_o know_v that_o he_o have_v forbid_v it_o so_o that_o in_o our_o heart_n there_o be_v no_o contempt_n of_o he_o or_o disobedience_n at_o all_o when_o therefore_o at_o any_o be_v his_o own_o and_o he_o may_v fix_v they_o upon_o the_o consideration_n of_o what_o he_o please_v and_o where_o he_o have_v the_o power_n to_o consider_v of_o any_o action_n he_o have_v the_o power_n likewise_o to_o avoid_v it_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o be_v plead_v in_o behalf_n of_o man_n ability_n to_o keep_v all_o god_n command_v entire_o and_o to_o live_v whole_o without_o sin_n by_o atticus_n in_o saint_n t_o hierome_n erasm._n thus_o much_o we_o say_v that_o a_o man_n may_v live_v without_o all_o sin_n if_o he_o will_v for_o such_o time_n and_o place_n as_o his_o mind_n be_v intent_n and_o his_o care_n be_v at_o stretch_v and_o his_o bodily_a infirmity_n will_v suffer_v he_o to_o continue_v so_o but_o as_o for_o this_o power_n of_o avoid_v all_o involuntary_a sin_n which_o arise_v from_o inconsideration_n it_o be_v no_o power_n at_o all_o for_o herein_o we_o must_v know_v lie_v every_o man_n unavoidable_a weakness_n and_o infirmity_n that_o whereas_o our_o be_v divert_v by_o other_o business_n and_o hinder_v by_o intervening_a accident_n so_o that_o sometime_o either_o he_o have_v not_o leisure_n to_o consider_v in_o or_o his_o faculty_n be_v not_o well_o dispose_v and_o his_o thought_n free_a and_o at_o his_o own_o command_n so_o as_o when_o he_o have_v time_n due_o to_o consider_v in_o it_o and_o this_o evil_a state_n which_o thus_o unfit_v a_o man_n for_o consideration_n be_v not_o always_o in_o his_o own_o power_n and_o at_o his_o own_o choice_n whether_o he_o shall_v fall_v under_o it_o or_o no._n for_o as_o for_o the_o want_n of_o time_n a_o man_n in_o this_o world_n be_v place_v in_o a_o crowd_n of_o business_n and_o whilst_o his_o thought_n be_v hot_a in_o the_o pursuit_n of_o one_o another_o many_o time_n wait_v for_o he_o and_o because_o opportunity_n do_v not_o stay_v till_o we_o be_v at_o leisure_n we_o must_v take_v they_o when_o we_o find_v they_o so_o that_o we_o act_v oftentimes_o without_o consider_v since_o if_o we_o shall_v stay_v to_o think_v we_o shall_v
of_o several_a of_o his_o dear_a saint_n who_o have_v experience_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o by_o all_o which_o it_o appear_v that_o so_o long_o as_o we_o be_v guilty_a of_o no_o other_o slip_n but_o such_o as_o these_o we_o be_v safe_a in_o god_n favour_n and_o secure_a of_o his_o promise_n we_o shall_v be_v accept_v by_o he_o although_o we_o live_v and_o die_v in_o they_o and_o thus_o at_o length_n it_o appear_v what_o sin_n be_v true_o and_o innocent_o involuntary_a viz._n those_o which_o be_v act_v ignorant_o and_o unwitting_o and_o that_o they_o do_v not_o unsaint_n a_o man_n or_o destroy_v his_o state_n of_o grace_n and_o salvation_n but_o consist_v with_o it_o chap._n v._n of_o these_o involuntary_a and_o consistent_a sin_n particular_o and_o of_o the_o first_o cause_n of_o or_o believe_v in_o christ_n shall_v live_v he_o speak_v metonymical_o and_o mean_v faith_n and_o knowledge_n with_o this_o effect_n of_o a_o work_a service_n and_o obedience_n as_o for_o knowledge_n it_o be_v plain_a that_o god_n accept_v it_o no_o otherwise_o
the_o strength_n of_o our_o own_o sinful_a lust_n that_o give_v such_o a_o irresistible_a strength_n to_o the_o outward_a temptation_n a_o great_a offer_n of_o gain_n indeed_o can_v be_v withstand_v by_o a_o covetous_a heart_n and_o a_o invite_a beauty_n and_o a_o fair_a opportunity_n be_v irresistible_a to_o a_o slave_n of_o lust_n and_o a_o lascivious_a reign_a inclination_n but_o if_o the_o man_n be_v above_o the_o world_n and_o his_o heart_n be_v chaste_a they_o be_v of_o no_o force_n nor_o can_v they_o offer_v any_o violence_n at_o all_o it_o be_v the_o wickedness_n of_o our_o own_o heart_n lust_n therefore_o which_o be_v so_o deep_o in_o love_n with_o they_o and_o so_o unbridle_o bend_v after_o they_o that_o give_v all_o the_o prevail_a force_n and_o overpower_a strength_n to_o commit_v sin_n then_o it_o be_v no_o sufficient_a excuse_n to_o we_o that_o the_o temptation_n be_v strong_a because_o it_o be_v only_o the_o strength_n of_o our_o own_o unmortified_a lust_n that_o make_v it_o so_o for_o we_o love_v the_o sinful_a pleasure_n too_o well_o and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o it_o overpower_v we_o and_o since_o the_o strength_n of_o temptation_n be_v owe_v only_o to_o the_o strength_n of_o sin_n it_o can_v never_o excuse_v we_o from_o undergo_a punishment_n so_o that_o this_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o false_a hope_n to_o think_v of_o be_v excuse_v for_o our_o sin_n because_o we_o act_v it_o through_o the_o violence_n of_o a_o great_a temptation_n four_o another_o ground_n of_o false_a confidence_n whereupon_o man_n hope_v to_o be_v save_v although_o they_o do_v not_o obey_v in_o their_o work_n and_o action_n but_o be_v worker_n of_o sin_n and_o disobedience_n be_v because_o when_o they_o do_v transgress_v it_o be_v with_o reluctance_n and_o that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o unmixed_a pleasure_n they_o believe_v and_o know_v it_o to_o be_v of_o a_o compound_n and_o mix_a nature_n to_o have_v some_o present_a pleasure_n which_o will_v delight_v but_o withal_o much_o future_a punishment_n which_o will_v torment_v they_o and_o since_o they_o know_v it_o to_o be_v a_o composition_n of_o good_a and_o ill_a they_o do_v not_o perfect_o either_o love_n or_o hate_n choose_v or_o refuse_v it_o their_o will_n be_v distract_v by_o different_a motive_n in_o the_o same_o choice_n for_o the_o future_a pain_n will_v draw_v they_o to_o reject_v but_o the_o present_a joy_n invite_v they_o to_o embrace_v it_o so_o that_o in_o a_o different_a degree_n they_o both_o will_n and_o will_v the_o same_o thing_n they_o will_v have_v it_o and_o yet_o they_o will_v avoid_v it_o for_o they_o will_v enjoy_v what_o they_o desire_v but_o withal_o they_o will_v keep_v off_o from_o what_o they_o fear_v they_o have_v a_o mind_n to_o commit_v the_o sin_n because_o it_o will_v please_v they_o for_o the_o present_a and_o yet_o they_o be_v afraid_a of_o it_o because_o of_o that_o wrath_n which_o it_o treasure_n up_o for_o they_o against_o the_o time_n to_o come_v but_o notwithstanding_o all_o this_o conflict_n in_o their_o own_o choice_n yet_o at_o last_o their_o sin_n prevail_v and_o they_o obey_v it_o for_o they_o have_v rather_o hazard_v all_o its_o torment_n than_o miss_v of_o its_o delight_n they_o be_v unwilling_a to_o venture_v upon_o those_o danger_n which_o it_o bring_v but_o yet_o they_o have_v rather_o venture_v on_o they_o than_o go_v without_o it_o they_o sin_v unwilling_o just_a as_o a_o labourer_n work_v or_o as_o a_o soldier_n fight_v unwilling_o that_o be_v they_o do_v not_o will_v it_o for_o itself_o they_o will_v not_o do_v it_o unless_o they_o be_v hire_v to_o it_o for_o consider_v all_o thing_n they_o will_v to_o act_n and_o not_o to_o omit_v it_o their_o will_n be_v against_o it_o indeed_o at_o the_o first_o sight_n but_o upon_o better_a consideration_n it_o resolve_v upon_o it_o and_o all_o thing_n lay_v together_o they_o choose_v to_o commit_v the_o sin_n rather_o than_o to_o forbear_v it_o but_o now_o this_o be_v such_o a_o state_n as_o will_v never_o bring_v any_o man_n to_o heaven_n for_o whether_o he_o transgress_v willing_o or_o with_o reluctancy_n be_v not_o the_o question_n but_o if_o he_o choose_v at_o last_o to_o disobey_v when_o god_n come_v to_o judgement_n he_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o pronounce_v upon_o he_o that_o death_n which_o he_o have_v establish_v for_o the_o punishment_n obey_v they_o it_o be_v his_o work_n and_o action_n that_o must_v determine_v his_o service_n and_o obedience_n so_o that_o if_o he_o commit_v sin_n he_o be_v the_o servant_n of_o sin_n will_v or_o unwilling_a may_v extenuate_v or_o heighten_v his_o disobedience_n but_o not_o utter_o destroy_v or_o alter_v the_o nature_n of_o it_o for_o indeed_o something_o of_o struggle_v and_o regret_n be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o the_o obedience_n and_o disobedience_n of_o the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o world_n there_o be_v few_o so_o good_a as_o to_o obey_v without_o all_o reluctance_n and_o few_o so_o wicked_a as_o to_o sin_v without_o all_o remorse_n for_o as_o long_o as_o we_o be_v in_o this_o life_n we_o be_v a_o mix_v and_o compound_a substance_n of_o soul_n and_o body_n flesh_n and_o spirit_n that_o the_o motion_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v occasion_v and_o strengthen_v by_o the_o weakness_n and_o inability_n of_o the_o law_n which_o can_v not_o restrain_v they_o 7._o do_v work_v such_o alive_a at_o the_o promulgation_n of_o the_o law_n upon_o mount_n sinai_n may_v say_v i_o be_v alive_a to_o my_o think_n and_o as_o to_o great_a degree_n of_o that_o guilt_n which_o i_o contract_v afterward_o without_o the_o law_n once_o or_o before_o such_o time_n as_o it_o be_v there_o proclaim_v to_o we_o for_o till_o then_o i_o know_v not_o lust_n to_o be_v a_o sin_n and_o so_o by_o reason_n of_o my_o ignorance_n neither_o sin_v so_o much_o in_o it_o nor_o be_v so_o sensible_a of_o it_o as_o now_o i_o be_o but_o when_o the_o commandment_n come_v and_o be_v plain_o make_v know_v to_o i_o by_o moses_n then_o sin_n i_o say_v which_o be_v only_o show_v and_o forbid_v but_o can_v not_o be_v restrain_v by_o it_o revive_v and_o begin_v to_o have_v the_o fullness_n of_o guilt_n restrain_v that_o sin_n which_o bring_v death_n upon_o we_o for_o it_o can_v subdue_v but_o only_o show_v and_o forbid_v it_o and_o therefore_o our_o habitual_a lust_n find_v themselves_o too_o threaten_n in_o their_o true_a meaning_n to_o be_v such_o as_o he_o will_v execute_v and_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o in_o our_o work_n and_o practice_n despise_v and_o sin_n against_o they_o then_o knowledge_n of_o that_o one_o law_n which_o be_v soon_o learned_a he_o may_v have_v it_o within_o his_o own_o power_n when_o he_o will_v to_o understand_v all_o the_o rest_n which_o be_v contain_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o those_o two_o great_a branch_n and_o general_a head_n of_o duty_n but_o alas_o it_o be_v not_o every_o common_a head_n no_o nor_o very_o many_o even_o of_o the_o wise_a and_o learned_a who_o be_v so_o quick_a and_o ready_a so_o full_a and_o comprehensive_a in_o make_v inference_n but_o they_o have_v need_v to_o be_v show_v the_o particular_n and_o be_v not_o able_a of_o themselves_o to_o collect_v they_o by_o a_o tedious_a and_o comprehensive_a train_n of_o consequence_n so_o that_o even_o when_o they_o have_v learn_v their_o obligation_n to_o the_o most_o material_a and_o general_a precept_n of_o the_o gospel_n yet_o may_v there_o be_v several_a particular_a one_o still_o remain_v which_o not_o only_o the_o poor_a and_o ignorant_a but_o they_o also_o who_o think_v themselves_o to_o be_v more_o wise_a and_o learned_a do_v not_o see_v and_o take_v themselves_o to_o be_v oblige_v by_o as_o for_o the_o cry_a sin_n of_o perjury_n adultery_n murder_n theft_n oppression_n lie_v slander_n and_o the_o like_a which_o even_o natural_a conscience_n without_o the_o assistance_n and_o instruction_n of_o christ_n gospel_n will_v be_v afraid_a of_o these_o thing_n by_o make_v they_o willing_a first_o and_o eager_o desirous_a to_o believe_v they_o for_o our_o belief_n of_o any_o opinion_n be_v produce_v in_o we_o by_o our_o diligent_a search_n and_o duty_n because_o that_o be_v painful_a they_o be_v great_o wicked_a and_o so_o care_v not_o for_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o law_n because_o that_o will_v disquiet_v they_o man_n love_v darkness_n duty_n the_o idleness_n and_o wickedness_n of_o our_o heart_n be_v the_o first_o spring_n and_o the_o neglect_n of_o mean_n and_o industrious_a pervert_n of_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o great_a productive_a instrument_n of_o our_o wilful_a ignorance_n which_o be_v therefore_o call_v voluntary_a and_o wilful_a because_o the_o principle_n and_o the_o instrument_n the_o motive_n and_o the_o mean_n to_o it_o be_v both_o under_o the_o power_n and_o choice_n of_o our_o own_o will_n and_o these_o thing_n make_v our_o ignorance_n wilful_a viz._n a_o wilful_a neglect_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o knowledge_n or_o a_o wilful_a pervert_n of_o those_o law_n which_o we_o be_v to_o know_v we_o shall_v easy_o discern_v second_o what_o ignorance_n be_v unwilled_a and_o involuntary_a namely_o that_o which_o imply_v a_o freedom_n from_o and_o a_o absence_n

catechise_v by_o our_o governor_n teach_v by_o our_o superior_n and_o admonish_v by_o our_o equal_n beg_v always_o a_o blessing_n from_o god_n to_o set_v home_o upon_o our_o soul_n all_o their_o place_v in_o every_o man_n power_n for_o any_o of_o we_o to_o use_v who_o be_v so_o mind_v so_o that_o if_o we_o be_v ignorant_a of_o our_o duty_n through_o the_o want_n of_o they_o we_o be_v ignorant_a because_o we_o ourselves_o will_v have_v it_o so_o but_o if_o ever_o we_o expect_v that_o our_o ignorance_n shall_v be_v judge_v involuntary_a we_o must_v industrious_o use_v all_o those_o mean_n of_o knowledge_n which_o be_v under_o the_o power_n of_o our_o own_o will_n whereby_o we_o may_v prevent_v it_o and_o as_o for_o the_o measure_n of_o this_o industry_n viz._n what_o time_n be_v hear_v they_o more_o seldom_o but_o now_o of_o all_o these_o who_o leisure_n and_o opportunity_n be_v thus_o different_a god_n do_v not_o in_o any_o wise_a exact_a the_o same_o measure_n no_o one_o shall_v be_v excuse_v for_o what_o another_o shall_v be_v punish_v but_o if_o every_o man_n endeavour_v according_a to_o his_o opportunity_n he_o have_v do_v his_o duty_n and_o god_n have_v accept_v measure_n of_o industry_n in_o the_o use_n of_o all_o the_o mean_n of_o knowledge_n as_o will_v be_v interpret_v for_o a_o effect_n of_o a_o hearty_a desire_n to_o know_v his_o law_n by_o any_o
