to_o come_v to_o they_o of_o the_o new_a testament_n yea_o and_o but_o to_o touch_v one_o of_o they_o only_o namely_o the_o lord_n supper_n what_o wonderful_a and_o unspeakable_a comfort_n do_v god_n in_o christ_n offer_v unto_o we_o therein_o to_o say_v nothing_o of_o those_o that_o we_o receive_v there_o the_o pledge_n of_o his_o death_n and_o blood_n shed_v and_o of_o all_o the_o grace_n that_o heavenly_a and_o holy_a joy_n and_o by_o argument_n take_v from_o privation_n if_o i_o may_v so_o say_v we_o may_v prove_v this_o point_n the_o comfort_n that_o we_o speak_v of_o be_v no_o where_o else_o to_o be_v sound_a therefore_o it_o must_v of_o necessity_n be_v in_o he_o alone_o if_o we_o will_v look_v to_o angel_n and_o saint_n depart_v out_o of_o this_o life_n there_o be_v a_o double_a exception_n against_o they_o for_o first_o we_o be_v uncertain_a of_o their_o good_a will_n and_o sound_v affection_n towards_o we_o as_o in_o this_o behalf_n then_o we_o be_v sure_o they_o can_v afford_v we_o that_o we_o desire_v as_o who_o neither_o have_v that_o power_n in_o themselves_o because_o it_o proper_o &_o only_o belong_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o beside_o be_v sunder_v so_o far_o from_o we_o in_o respect_n of_o distance_n of_o place_n that_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o stretch_v out_o their_o aid_n though_o they_o can_v help_v as_o for_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o creature_n they_o be_v as_o far_o unable_a and_o weak_a for_o this_o work_n as_o the_o other_o if_o not_o more_o the_o divelles_n and_o damn_v spirit_n will_v rather_o do_v what_o they_o can_v to_o torment_v we_o then_o yield_v any_o consolation_n man_n and_o woman_n that_o live_v with_o we_o in_o the_o world_n be_v infirm_a and_o stand_v in_o need_n as_o we_o ourselves_o and_o not_o able_a in_o the_o greatness_n of_o their_o distress_n to_o comfort_v themselves_o much_o less_o we_o unreasonable_a creature_n be_v taint_v with_o our_o sin_n and_o since_o the_o wicked_a enjoy_v they_o in_o great_a portion_n than_o we_o can_v yield_v consolation_n our_o own_o thing_n that_o we_o have_v in_o our_o own_o power_n as_o our_o wife_n our_o child_n and_o friend_n either_o in_o hard_a heartedness_n against_o we_o will_v become_v miserable_a comforter_n unto_o we_o as_o job_n wife_n and_o friend_n be_v all_o the_o sort_n of_o they_o or_o else_o when_o we_o shall_v consider_v what_o injury_n and_o indignity_n we_o have_v offer_v they_o will_v increase_v our_o sorrow_n and_o the_o like_a may_v we_o say_v of_o our_o health_n wealth_n strength_n etc._n etc._n which_o be_v abuse_v will_v cast_v down_o rather_o then_o comfort_n but_o whither_o be_o i_o carry_v in_o confirmation_n of_o this_o point_n it_o be_v time_n as_o i_o take_v it_o to_o make_v use_n of_o it_o and_o so_o to_o proceed_v to_o the_o handle_n and_o hear_v of_o some_o other_o doctrine_n we_o may_v see_v by_o it_o as_o if_o it_o be_v in_o a_o clear_a &_o true_a look_a glass_n the_o miserable_a estate_n and_o woeful_a condition_n of_o all_o in_o the_o world_n that_o be_v without_o the_o knowledge_n and_o feel_n of_o christ_n i_o say_v both_o knowledge_n and_o feeling_n and_o i_o beseech_v you_o join_v they_o both_o together_o for_o they_o can_v be_v sunder_v no_o more_o than_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o body_n because_o as_o all_o without_o the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o be_v under_o condemnation_n so_o many_o that_o know_v he_o &_o yet_o feel_v he_o not_o in_o faith_n and_o obedience_n shall_v certain_o perish_v for_o if_o that_o be_v true_a which_o christ_n himself_o say_v joh._n 17._o this_o be_v life_n eternal_a to_o know_v thou_o to_o be_v the_o only_a true_a god_n and_o he_o who_o thou_o have_v send_v jesus_n christ_n then_o this_o by_o the_o contrary_n must_v needs_o be_v true_a also_o that_o anabaptiste_n who_o deny_v his_o humanity_n and_o our_o popish_a adversary_n deface_v his_o office_n of_o kingdom_n in_o erect_v and_o exercise_v another_o government_n they_o he_o have_v prescribe_v of_o priesthood_n in_o place_v their_o daily_a unbloody_a sacrifice_n in_o stead_n of_o it_o of_o prophecy_n in_o bring_v in_o new_a docirine_n and_o establish_v tradition_n and_o other_o such_o trash_n and_o trumpery_n other_o some_o again_o know_v he_o but_o deny_v he_o through_o loose_a and_o lewd_a life_n of_o who_o we_o may_v say_v as_o the_o apostle_n say_v of_o some_o other_o not_o much_o unlike_o they_o that_o when_o they_o know_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n they_o deny_v it_o notwithstanding_o in_o their_o deed_n and_o of_o who_o also_o we_o may_v say_v though_o it_o be_v to_o their_o terror_n as_o christ_n say_v luk._n 12._o he_o that_o know_v the_o will_n of_o his_o master_n and_o do_v it_o not_o shall_v be_v beat_v with_o many_o stripe_n and_o yet_o let_v no_o man_n think_v this_o a_o hard_a or_o hasty_a judgement_n for_o here_o we_o speak_v not_o the_o word_n of_o our_o own_o heart_n or_o mouth_n but_o of_o god_n and_o may_v in_o some_o measure_n in_o this_o behalf_n say_v even_o as_o christ_n himself_o say_v joh._n 12._o i_o judge_v no_o man_n but_o there_o be_v one_o that_o judge_v such_o even_o the_o word_n that_o he_o have_v speak_v it_o shall_v judge_v they_o according_a to_o which_o when_o we_o judge_v we_o can_v but_o judge_v righteous_a judgement_n because_o it_o be_v all_o and_o only_a truth_n it_o can_v give_v no_o sentence_n save_o according_a to_o the_o same_o but_o to_o draw_v it_o more_o near_o to_o our_o present_a purpose_n and_o occasion_n we_o may_v learn_v from_o hence_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o so_o many_o distress_a spirit_n lie_v as_o it_o be_v broil_v in_o the_o flame_n &_o fire_n of_o a_o trouble_a and_o disquiet_v he_o be_v sure_o he_o either_o they_o know_v not_o christ_n and_o the_o power_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o spirit_n and_o then_o no_o marvel_n though_o they_o boil_v and_o broil_v indeed_o when_o they_o be_v touch_v with_o the_o sting_n of_o conscience_n for_o sin_n and_o condemnation_n therefore_o for_o how_o can_v it_o be_v otherwise_o see_v there_o be_v neither_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n nor_o overcome_v of_o condemnation_n nor_o any_o comfortable_a &_o continual_a feel_n of_o any_o favour_n but_o by_o he_o or_o else_o they_o feel_v he_o not_o with_o his_o force_n and_o effect_v that_o way_n though_o they_o know_v their_o own_o sin_n the_o punishment_n due_a unto_o they_o therefore_o with_o the_o manifold_a unworthyness_n they_o find_v in_o themselves_o hinder_v they_o from_o comfort_n and_o consolation_n as_o for_o the_o former_a sort_n i_o will_v wish_v they_o careful_o &_o painful_o to_o labour_v
close_o imply_v &_o understand_v they_o wherein_o sure_o he_o deal_v not_o otherwise_o than_o he_o do_v in_o the_o commandment_n by_o a_o good_a thing_n command_v forbid_v the_o contrary_a cuill_n and_o by_o a_o evil_a thing_n prohibit_v injoin_v straight_o the_o love_a and_o do_v of_o the_o contrary_a good_a that_o so_o we_o see_v what_o god_n aim_v at_o both_o in_o his_o precept_n promise_n threat_n and_o all_o namely_o not_o only_o our_o obedience_n and_o humiliation_n but_o comfort_n also_o we_o may_v learn_v to_o attain_v that_o and_o to_o look_v to_o and_o for_o that_o which_o he_o have_v provide_v for_o our_o good_a and_o yet_o we_o shall_v more_o clear_o perceive_v and_o behold_v this_o truth_n if_o we_o respect_v god_n word_n or_o the_o holy_a scirpture_n in_o the_o several_a part_n thereof_o fundr_v as_o if_o it_o be_v from_o the_o promise_n for_o if_o we_o look_v upon_o the_o threat_n contain_v therein_o against_o sin_n and_o sinner_n they_o will_v be_v so_o far_o off_o from_o perform_v this_o duty_n of_o comfort_n and_o consolation_n that_o they_o will_v rather_o work_v in_o we_o horror_n and_o tremble_a and_o make_v we_o to_o be_v so_o not_o only_o cast_v down_o but_o dismay_v in_o ourselves_o as_o we_o shall_v hardly_o or_o not_o at_o all_o admit_v comfort_n the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o law_n separate_v from_o the_o curse_n and_o threaten_v due_a to_o the_o transgressor_n thereof_o will_v indeed_o set_v before_o we_o god_n absolute_a and_o exact_a righteounesse_fw-fr and_o discover_v unto_o we_o the_o duty_n that_o we_o shall_v do_v to_o he_o and_o to_o our_o neighbour_n but_o when_o we_o consider_v withal_o that_o it_o set_v out_o our_o sin_n against_o every_o particular_a precept_n that_o will_v be_v so_o far_o from_o yield_v we_o consololation_n that_o it_o will_v over_o whelm_v we_o with_o despair_n when_o we_o either_o respect_n god_n absolure_n righteousness_n or_o our_o own_o innumerable_a transgression_n against_o his_o bless_a law_n and_o though_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o these_o former_a thing_n may_v be_v good_a and_o powerful_a to_o humble_v we_o and_o somake_n we_o indeed_o more_o fit_a for_o consolation_n and_o comfort_n even_o as_o preparative_n go_v before_o better_a physic_n for_o the_o scour_n away_o of_o bodily_a disease_n yet_o can_v they_o not_o of_o themselves_o help_v or_o heal_v but_o wound_n and_o terrify_v rather_o for_o that_o be_v the_o peculiar_a both_o office_n and_o work_n of_o god_n promise_n make_v essectuall_a in_o our_o heart_n by_o the_o touch_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n nay_o i_o will_v say_v more_o than_o that_o though_o the_o ground_n of_o christian_a religion_n and_o the_o main_a point_n of_o faith_n be_v excellent_a thing_n and_o have_v their_o use_n not_o only_o for_o increase_v of_o knowledge_n but_o even_o for_o the_o build_n of_o we_o up_o in_o care_n and_o conscience_n of_o well_o do_v and_o be_v well_o feel_v may_v answer_v many_o temptation_n that_o arise_v in_o a_o scrupulous_a and_o doubtful_a mind_n yet_o still_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o word_n minister_v matter_n of_o assure_a comfort_n and_o comfortable_a assurance_n and_o feeling_n which_o also_o we_o may_v perceive_v by_o this_o that_o many_o may_v have_v the_o knowledge_n of_o faith_n and_o yet_o in_o the_o day_n of_o temptation_n not_o be_v able_a to_o strengthen_v their_o own_o hand_n or_o other_o but_o to_o proceed_v a_o little_a further_o in_o the_o proof_n of_o this_o point_n we_o can_v but_o confess_v that_o the_o example_n of_o mercy_n and_o comfort_n in_o the_o word_n be_v full_a of_o strong_a &_o sound_a consolation_n because_o they_o be_v as_o if_o it_o be_v so_o many_o seal_v set_v unto_o the_o writing_n of_o god_n promise_n that_o as_o heretofore_o he_o have_v be_v to_o other_o so_o he_o will_v hereafter_o or_o still_o be_v favourable_a unto_o his_o people_n and_o yet_o we_o shall_v see_v that_o they_o lie_v open_a though_o not_o of_o themselves_o yet_o by_o reason_n of_o man_n corrupt_a heart_n to_o many_o exception_n as_o for_o example_n they_o to_o who_o they_o be_v accomplish_v be_v better_a than_o we_o god_n be_v more_o favourable_a then_o than_o he_o will_v be_v now_o because_o we_o have_v more_o mean_n of_o mercy_n and_o have_v profit_v less_o and_o therefore_o be_v not_o so_o proper_o fit_a for_o consolation_n as_o the_o promise_n be_v for_o over_o and_o beside_o that_o they_o be_v but_o in_o man_n and_o therefore_o full_a of_o weakness_n and_o want_n we_o know_v and_o confess_v every_o where_n that_o as_o we_o must_v live_v not_o by_o example_n but_o by_o rule_n so_o we_o must_v be_v comfort_v not_o so_o much_o by_o example_n as_o by_o promise_n and_o therefore_o though_o example_n be_v good_a yet_o not_o so_o strong_a whereas_o the_o truth_n certainty_n and_o power_n of_o the_o promise_n be_v from_o the_o might_n and_o mercy_n of_o he_o that_o have_v make_v they_o who_o also_o be_v both_o great_a than_o all_o exception_n and_o free_a from_o the_o least_o show_n or_o shadow_n of_o turn_v and_o yet_o let_v we_o be_v understand_v i_o beseech_v you_o as_o we_o shall_v namely_o that_o we_o ascribe_v not_o this_o excellent_a work_n unto_o the_o promise_n themselves_o though_o also_o we_o deny_v not_o but_o even_o in_o that_o respect_n they_o be_v spiritual_a holy_a heavenly_a etc._n etc._n but_o as_o by_o the_o spirit_n they_o be_v make_v powerful_a in_o we_o and_o as_o by_o the_o hand_n of_o faith_n we_o be_v strengthen_v to_o apply_v they_o unto_o ourselves_o for_o otherwise_o we_o may_v say_v of_o they_o as_o we_o do_v of_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o word_n that_o without_o the_o spirit_n and_o faith_n they_o be_v as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o seal_a book_n unto_o we_o for_o understanding_n and_o a_o dead_a letter_n for_o instruction_n &_o consolation_n have_v even_o no_o other_o use_n in_o we_o than_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o word_n not_o feel_v or_o obey_v namely_o to_o make_v we_o without_o excuse_n or_o to_o cause_v our_o sorrowefull_a &_o heavy_a estate_n to_o become_v more_o sorrowful_a and_o heavy_a because_o we_o see_v holy_a &_o heavenly_a thing_n propound_v unto_o we_o and_o you_o have_v not_o either_o heart_n to_o understand_v or_o soul_n to_o believe_v this_o therefore_o must_v be_v our_o principal_a care_n to_o make_v that_o profitable_a unto_o we_o that_o god_n gracious_o provide_v and_o propound_v for_o our_o good_a now_o we_o come_v to_o the_o use_n of_o this_o necessary_a doctrine_n which_o as_o i_o take_v it_o be_v or_o may_v be_v twofolde_v first_o for_o instruction_n they_o or_o else_o if_o they_o have_v in_o some_o measure_n of_o knowledge_n be_v acquaint_v with_o they_o they_o have_v in_o the_o carelessness_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n or_o not_o seel_v present_a use_n of_o they_o let_v they_o slip_v out_o of_o their_o mind_n like_o leak_a vessel_n not_o able_a to_o contain_v such_o good_a thing_n or_o else_o if_o they_o have_v know_v they_o &_o remember_v they_o through_o want_n of_o comfortable_a feel_n of_o the_o good_a thing_n propound_v therein_o they_o have_v be_v unto_o they_o as_o if_o they_o have_v either_o not_o be_v at_o all_o or_o as_o though_o they_o have_v contain_v in_o they_o no_o such_o sweetness_n and_o pleasure_n as_o they_o do_v indeed_o and_o let_v we_o not_o think_v this_o strange_a for_o even_o as_o ignorance_n in_o religion_n and_o carelessness_n to_o obey_v the_o thing_n that_o we_o know_v be_v a_o principal_a cause_n of_o all_o transgression_n and_o loose_a life_n man_n not_o be_v either_o willing_a or_o able_a to_o do_v the_o thing_n they_o be_v not_o acquaint_v withal_o and_o for_o the_o thing_n that_o they_o know_v blear_a out_o their_o knowand_a lay_v the_o reins_n in_o their_o own_o neck_n so_o they_o not_o know_v of_o the_o promise_n or_o they_o not_o mind_v of_o they_o or_o not_o strive_v comfortable_o to_o feel_v they_o be_v the_o very_a wellspring_n as_o i_o may_v so_o call_v it_o of_o all_o inward_a and_o outward_a discomfort_n and_o distress_n of_o conscience_n especial_o for_o how_o can_v the_o wound_a conscience_n admit_v comfort_n when_o he_o understand_v not_o the_o comfort_n present_v unto_o he_o or_o if_o he_o forget_v it_o where_o be_v his_o joy_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o his_o forgetfulness_n we_o say_v that_o of_o a_o unknown_a thing_n there_o be_v no_o desire_n &_o we_o may_v in_o proportion_n say_v the_o same_o
the_o attainment_n of_o knowledge_n because_o than_o they_o be_v and_o shall_v be_v a_o degree_n near_o to_o grace_n &_o comfort_n than_o before_o which_o have_v once_o obtain_v and_o hearty_a prayer_n make_v unto_o god_n for_o the_o sanctify_a use_n continuance_n and_o increase_n thereof_o in_o they_o they_o shall_v no_o doubt_n in_o good_a time_n come_v to_o feeling_n but_o till_o then_o let_v they_o never_o think_v of_o it_o for_o all_o their_o thought_n that_o way_n shall_v be_v but_o lose_v labour_n because_o not_o know_v they_o can_v believe_v for_o how_o can_v any_o man_n be_v persuade_v of_o the_o thing_n he_o know_v not_o and_o for_o the_o other_o i_o will_v in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n counsel_v they_o never_o to_o think_v of_o sin_n alone_o or_o of_o condemnation_n by_o itself_o or_o of_o their_o own_o unworthiness_n apart_o for_o then_o certain_o they_o can_v choose_v but_o be_v much_o discomfort_a &_o great_o cast_v down_o but_o to_o join_v always_o therewith_o the_o remedy_n that_o god_n have_v provide_v &_o give_v they_o there_o against_o as_o oppose_v against_o sin_n christ_n suffering_n and_o the_o merit_n thereof_o which_o be_v strong_a to_o take_v away_o the_o cause_n can_v but_o utter_o remove_v the_o effect_n that_o be_v condemnation_n and_o to_o oppose_v against_o their_o own_o unworthiness_n the_o worthiness_n of_o he_o that_o have_v deserve_v all_o in_o all_o not_o for_o himself_o for_o he_o need_v no_o merit_n as_o never_o have_v offend_v but_o for_o we_o that_o in_o his_o righteousness_n we_o may_v stand_v pure_a and_o clean_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n and_o then_o no_o doubt_n but_o if_o we_o do_v this_o these_o temptation_n shall_v be_v the_o more_o easy_a and_o the_o soon_o overcome_v special_o if_o we_o adjoine_v therewith_o all_o prayer_n for_o the_o increase_n &_o strengthen_v of_o our_o faith_n to_o apply_v unto_o ourselves_o all_o the_o sweet_a promise_n and_o comfortable_a example_n of_o the_o word_n which_o indeed_o be_v not_o only_o as_o many_o sure_a seal_n and_o pledge_n set_v thereunto_o but_o so_o many_o particular_a document_n to_o instruct_v we_o what_o to_o do_v because_o god_n be_v not_o in_o this_o sort_n or_o sense_n a_o general_a god_n to_o all_o but_o a_o particular_a god_n to_o the_o faithful_a &_o a_o special_a god_n to_o every_o one_o of_o they_o as_o may_v appear_v by_o these_o word_n of_o the_o faithful_a i_o thank_v my_o god_n and_o in_o prayer_n my_o god_n my_o god_n etc._n etc._n and_o yet_o this_o apply_v of_o he_o unto_o ourselves_o do_v not_o straighten_v god_n goodness_n in_o itself_o for_o that_o be_v infinite_o large_a nor_o hinder_v it_o from_o other_o for_o he_o may_v and_o do_v give_v to_o all_o abundant_o and_o yet_o all_o they_o have_v to_o the_o full_a and_o he_o himself_o never_o a_o whit_n the_o less_o therefore_o a_o second_o doctrine_n that_o we_o may_v learn_v from_o hence_o be_v this_o that_o the_o estate_n of_o a_o distress_a and_o a_o afflict_a spirit_n be_v not_o so_o hard_a or_o heavy_a so_o dangerous_a deadly_a or_o desperate_a as_o many_o man_n in_o the_o world_n take_v it_o and_o will_v make_v it_o to_o be_v this_o
