god_n that_o admit_v of_o it_o it_o be_v to_o prove_v every_o man_n a_o god_n be_v every_o master_n as_o ignorant_a as_o his_o scholar_n because_o his_o scholar_n know_v not_o as_o much_o as_o his_o master_n t._n hicks_n know_v not_o all_o truth_n nay_o t._n hicks_n may_v be_v lead_v into_o many_o mistake_v be_v his_o bible_n which_o he_o call_v his_o rule_n therefore_o the_o cause_n certain_o by_o his_o way_n of_o argue_v against_o the_o light_n if_o he_o be_v not_o perfect_a &_o infallible_a the_o scripture_n must_v needs_o be_v insufficient_a and_o errable_a but_o if_o it_o be_v a_o evil_a to_o make_v the_o scripture_n accessary_a to_o t._n h_n mistake_v of_o equal_a reason_n be_v it_o impious_a in_o he_o to_o charge_v man_n infirmity_n upon_o the_o light_n and_o repute_v that_o insufficient_a because_o they_o be_v rebellious_a education_n prejudice_n interest_n self-righteousness_n evil_a living_n bring_v vail_n over_o the_o understanding_n that_o though_o the_o light_a shine_n in_o darkness_n they_o comprehend_v it_o not_o when_o saul_n formality_n and_o pharisaical_a righteousness_n become_v shake_v by_o the_o law_n of_o light_n in_o the_o conscience_n then_o and_o not_o till_o then_o he_o cry_v out_o oh_o wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o whilst_o saul_n give_v more_o heed_n to_o his_o outward_a religion_n than_o the_o light_n in_o his_o conscience_n he_o do_v persecute_v and_o think_v it_o a_o duty_n it_o be_v when_o the_o light_n strike_v he_o that_o he_o become_v awaken_v but_o if_o he_o persecute_v the_o church_n by_o the_o light_n within_o why_o not_o by_o the_o spirit_n too_o since_o god_n give_v the_o jew_n his_o good_a spirit_n if_o t._n hicks_n will_v say_v but_o he_o resist_v that_o so_o say_v i_o as_o to_o the_o light_n formality_n tradition_n and_o many_o superstition_n attend_v with_o a_o ignorant_a and_o harsh_a zeal_n darken_v he_o that_o he_o can_v not_o behold_v it_o but_o it_o be_v a_o gross_a contradiction_n in_o t.h._n as_o the_o light_n in_o say_v that_o the_o light_n within_o reprove_v they_o not_o for_o multiply_v their_o deity_n for_o all_o learned_a man_n must_v needs_o know_v as_o i_o have_v elsewhere_o at_o large_a prove_v that_o by_o the_o light_n within_o they_o have_v decry_v the_o heathen-god_n maintain_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o one_o only_o wise_a god_n and_o for_o their_o faith_n and_o perseverance_n they_o have_v be_v take_v imprison_v arraign_v condemn_v and_o execute_v though_o it_o go_v for_o justice_n upon_o the_o enemy_n of_o the_o go_n who_o know_v not_o this_o be_v a_o holy_a light_n arise_v not_o to_o shine_v forth_o and_o give_v to_o understand_v their_o scope_n and_o tendency_n all_o scripture_n but_o prophecy_n which_o be_v give_v forth_o by_o inspiration_n as_o reproof_n exhortation_n doctrine_n etc._n etc._n be_v first_o experience_v or_o witness_v at_o who_o tho._n hicks_n may_v equal_o cavil_v and_o scoff_n what_o be_v your_o witness_v to_o i_o &_o that_o ascribable_a to_o the_o discovery_n conviction_n and_o leading_n of_o the_o bless_a light_n of_o christ_n within_o through_o every_o generation_n however_o various_o the_o principle_n may_v have_v be_v denominate_v as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n nigh_o wisdom_n light_n spirit_n etc._n etc._n under_o the_o old_a testament_n and_o light_n grace_n truth_n
christ_n spirit_n anoint_v gift_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n under_o the_o new_a testament_n two_o short_a scripture_n argument_n spring_v in_o my_o mind_n for_o the_o divinity_n and_o sufficiency_n of_o the_o light_n and_o from_o thence_o i_o shall_v conside_fw-la this_o objection_n i._o if_o god_n be_v divine_a and_o sufficient_a to_o salvation_n and_o the_o word_n be_v god_n and_o the_o life_n of_o the_o word_n 1.5_o one_o with_o the_o word_n and_o the_o life_n of_o the_o word_n the_o light_n of_o man_n then_o be_v the_o light_n of_o man_n divine_a and_o sufficient_a to_o salvation_n but_o be_v save_v tell_v we_o from_o whence_o it_o come_v but_o first_o prove_v this_o not_o save_v and_o as_o these_o thing_n be_v too_o difficult_a i_o hope_v for_o he_o to_o compass_v so_o be_v it_o as_o ridiculous_a and_o blasphemous_a to_o think_v that_o god_n shall_v give_v man_n a_o insufficient_a light_n but_o why_o any_o if_o not_o sufficient_a i_o have_v hear_v and_o read_v often_o that_o all_o god_n gift_n be_v perfect_a it_o be_v strange_a that_o his_o light_n to_o man_n shall_v be_v so_o lame_a defective_a and_o imperfect_a as_o t.h._n represent_v it_o but_o suppose_v this_o light_n to_o be_v so_o why_o a_o insufficient_a light_n and_o a_o save_v light_n both_o the_o lat_a will_v have_v do_v our_o business_n it_o be_v injurious_a to_o man_n to_o let_v he_o have_v a_o fallible_a guide_n for_o when_o he_o may_v think_v himself_o certain_a he_o may_v be_v in_o the_o great_a danger_n by_o mistake_v one_o for_o the_o other_o or_o think_v not_o of_o they_o as_o they_o be_v but_o thanks_o be_v to_o the_o god_n of_o light_n we_o know_v for_o we_o witness_v better_o thing_n how_o ill_o a_o reason_n and_o how_o offensive_a soever_o witness_v be_v to_o thomas_n hicks_n a_o anabaptist-teacher_n to_o who_o brethren_n experience_n once_o be_v the_o great_a foundation_n of_o both_o their_o knowledge_n and_o comfort_n though_o now_o mock_v at_o by_o he_o with_o great_a be_v cut_v off_o bear_v our_o sin_n etc._n etc._n i_o query_n how_o all_o this_o can_v be_v affirm_v of_o the_o light_n 4_o be_v not_o all_o the_o generation_n of_o christian_n since_o christ_n time_n till_o within_o these_o very_a few_o year_n certain_o lose_v and_o damn_a forasmuch_o as_o they_o acknowledge_v not_o this_o light_n within_o as_o the_o true_a christ_n to_o the_o first_o i_o answer_v there_o be_v nothing_o therein_o which_o may_v be_v think_v to_o reflect_v upon_o the_o light_n but_o what_o fall_v as_o heavy_o upon_o all_o other_o way_n help_n ordinance_n appointment_n yea_o the_o scripture_n and_o which_o be_v more_o upon_o god_n and_o christ_n and_o the_o holy_a spirit_n too_o for_o if_o the_o degeneracy_n of_o man_n that_o be_v the_o sad_a effect_n of_o his_o own_o rebellion_n shall_v be_v a_o valid_a proof_n of_o the_o insufficiency_n of_o the_o light_n within_o then_o must_v we_o conclude_v from_o the_o degeneracy_n that_o have_v be_v among_o jew_n and_o christian_n and_o which_o remain_v to_o this_o day_n that_o all_o those_o assistance_n way_n and_o help_n which_o have_v be_v give_v in_o reality_n be_v not_o potent_a nor_o sufficient_a for_o the_o insufficient_a and_o 2._o that_o man_n never_o be_v neither_o be_v any_o way_n faulty_a in_o short_a that_o may_v be_v sufficient_a to_o salvation_n which_o if_o neglect_v will_v never_o work_v salvation_n as_o in_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o talent_n may_v be_v see_v to_o the_o second_o i_o brief_o say_v that_o man_n mind_n be_v so_o much_o abroad_o through_o unstable_a and_o vain_a wander_n from_o god_n light_n the_o lord_n in_o wisdom_n and_o condescension_n to_o the_o weakness_n of_o man_n and_o darkness_n of_o that_o carnal_a state_n do_v accommodate_v both_o his_o discovery_n to_o man_n and_o that_o worship_n he_o require_v from_o man_n according_a to_o his_o capacity_n to_o receive_v the_o one_o and_o perform_v the_o other_o if_o god_n go_v into_o outward_a thing_n to_o meet_v with_o man_n mind_n that_o be_v abroad_o to_o the_o end_n that_o gradual_o it_o may_v return_v home_o shall_v we_o infer_v weakness_n in_o the_o light_n man_n in_o that_o state_n be_v incapable_a he_o must_v have_v be_v new-molded_n and_o as_o another_o creation_n to_o have_v then_o receive_v that_o testimoy_n in_o all_o its_o plainness_n which_o god_n have_v bring_v forth_o in_o after_o age_n if_o any_o will_v undertake_v to_o charge_v weakness_n upon_o man_n let_v he_o but_o i_o warn_v all_o how_o they_o conclude_v it_o against_o the_o light_n since_o the_o same_o fall_v on_o god_n and_o his_o good_a spirit_n who_o make_v use_v of_o such_o way_n and_o mean_n in_o order_n to_o gain_v upon_o man_n mind_n and_o beget_v a_o right_a understanding_n and_o sense_n of_o what_o be_v his_o will_n concern_v he_o beside_o not_o only_o do_v the_o divine_a light_n and_o life_n appear_v unto_o man_n in_o and_o through_o those_o thing_n as_o veil_n but_o that_o which_o give_v man_n true_a discern_v repentance_n and_o to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o ever_o be_v acceptable_a with_o god_n in_o any_o measure_n and_o which_o be_v as_o the_o soul_n life_n and_o spirit_n of_o all_o the_o true_a and_o well-pleasing_a sacrifice_n be_v a_o measure_n of_o that_o divine_a light_n of_o life_n in_o their_o heart_n at_o that_o time_n though_o as_o samuel_n in_o a_o like_a case_n they_o know_v it_o not_o let_v none_o then_o charge_v the_o weakness_n of_o the_o administration_n upon_o the_o light_n but_o the_o generation_n to_o who_o he_o that_o be_v the_o light_n of_o and_o in_o man_n appear_v as_o mankind_n have_v be_v able_a to_o receive_v the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o it_o be_v not_o insufficiency_n in_o god_n nor_o in_o his_o light_n or_o spirit_n if_o man_n eye_n be_v not_o strong_a enough_o to_o behold_v the_o brightness_n of_o what_o after_o age_n have_v behold_v but_o it_o be_v his_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n that_o he_o proportion_v both_o his_o discovery_n and_o requiring_n according_a to_o man_n ability_n to_o conclude_v the_o light_n be_v still_o the_o same_o in_o itself_o through_o all_o age_n and_o not_o a_o whit_n the_o less_o sufficient_a because_o through_o its_o invisibility_n and_o spirituallity_n and_o the_o wander_n abroad_o and_o great_a carnality_n of_o man_n mind_n some_o external_n mean_n be_v use_v suitable_a to_o man_n weakness_n through_o which_o to_o reach_v into_o man_n and_o raise_v up_o some_o further_a knowledge_n of_o the_o spirtuallity_n of_o god_n worship_n nor_o because_o of_o the_o light_n be_v sufficiency_n as_o to_o itself_o ought_v any_o to_o infer_v that_o those_o way_n
or_o mean_n be_v vain_a or_o needless_a for_o as_o the_o weakness_n of_o man_n shall_v not_o call_v the_o ability_n of_o the_o light_n in_o question_n nor_o their_o carnality_n take_v off_o from_o the_o light_n be_v sufficiency_n spirituallity_n or_o divinity_n so_o neither_o do_v the_o sufficiency_n of_o the_o light_n render_v all_o mean_n accommodate_v to_o man_n weakness_n vain_a or_o needless_a especial_o when_o the_o virtue_n that_o be_v in_o they_o come_v from_o the_o light_n of_o life_n to_o his_o three_o objection_n which_o with_o most_o opposer_n carry_v the_o great_a
