it_o this_o be_v the_o complaint_n of_o these_o people_n here_o of_o themselves_o upon_o their_o own_o experience_n they_o know_v not_o what_o be_v the_o matter_n with_o they_o but_o they_o wish_v the_o almighty_a to_o depart_v from_o they_o for_o they_o desire_v not_o the_o knowledge_n of_o his_o way_n job_n 21.11_o this_o distemper_n it_o have_v sundry_a ground_n and_o cause_n of_o it_o do_v from_o thence_o for_o the_o most_o part_n grow_v a_o deadness_n and_o awkness_n upon_o the_o mind_n and_o listnesness_n to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a man_n from_o hence_o grow_v stranger_n to_o god_n and_o he_o to_o they_o and_o as_o stranger_n in_o regard_n of_o communion_n so_o likewise_o in_o regard_n of_o affection_n and_o spirit_n which_o may_v dispose_v thereunto_o so_o dangerous_a a_o those_o thing_n which_o tend_v unto_o it_o hos_fw-la 4.11_o it_o be_v say_v that_o whoredom_n and_o wine_n and_o new_a wine_n they_o take_v away_o the_o heart_n fornication_n and_o drunkenness_n and_o wonderful_a alteration_n in_o he_o over_o what_o he_o be_v before_o which_o make_v he_o so_o to_o pray_v for_o the_o create_v of_o a_o clean_a heart_n and_o the_o renewal_a of_o a_o right_a spirit_n danger_n in_o such_o a_o course_n as_o this_o be_v you_o can_v serve_v god_n and_o mammon_n both_o at_o once_o these_o and_o the_o like_a be_v the_o occasion_n of_o this_o heartlesness_n and_o indisposition_n to_o god_n which_o be_v one_o thing_n here_o considerable_a another_o thing_n here_o imply_v be_v a_o thraldom_n and_o subjection_n to_o evil_n from_o whence_o man_n come_v to_o despair_v of_o ever_o get_v the_o mastery_n of_o their_o lust_n and_o the_o corruption_n which_o be_v in_o they_o there_o be_v some_o kind_n of_o people_n in_o the_o world_n their_o sin_n and_o and_o speculation_n and_o second_o by_o way_n of_o affection_n it_o be_v present_a thus_o first_o in_o a_o speculative_a sense_n so_o the_o soul_n though_o it_o be_v essential_o present_a in_o one_o place_n yet_o it_o may_v be_v operative_o present_a in_o another_o yea_o in_o many_o place_n at_o once_o it_o be_v the_o great_a advantage_n and_o privilege_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o soul_n of_o man_n that_o it_o can_v in_o a_o way_n of_o contemplation_n go_v forth_o to_o variety_n of_o object_n which_o it_o be_v conversant_a about_o though_o never_o so_o distant_a and_o remote_a thus_o while_o it_o be_v essential_o upon_o earth_n it_o be_v operative_o and_o speculative_o in_o heaven_n a_o gracious_a soul_n while_o he_o be_v here_o below_o in_o the_o flesh_n yet_o he_o have_v his_o thought_n and_o inclination_n and_o affectionate_a disposition_n it_o be_v a_o usual_a and_o receive_a maxim_n among_o we_o anima_fw-la non_fw-la est_fw-la tam_fw-la uba_fw-la animat_fw-la quam_fw-la ubi_fw-la be_v in_o another_o their_o person_n in_o the_o public_a assembly_n and_o congregation_n of_o the_o people_n of_o god_n in_o his_o ordinance_n but_o their_o heart_n be_v too_o frequent_o elsewhere_o in_o the_o market_n and_o in_o the_o shop_n and_o in_o the_o field_n and_o in_o place_n of_o temptation_n even_o when_o they_o be_v about_o these_o holy_a thing_n now_o in_o this_o moral_a and_o interpretative_a sense_n so_o the_o soul_n or_o heart_n of_o elisha_n may_v be_v well_o say_v to_o have_v go_v out_o with_o gehazi_n even_o in_o his_o personal_a distance_n from_o he_o but_o then_o again_o we_o must_v consider_v how_o this_o still_o be_v and_o here_o it_o be_v not_o so_o as_o to_o approve_v of_o the_o wickedness_n of_o gehazi_n or_o to_o give_v any_o allowance_n unto_o it_o as_o 2_o king_n 10.15_o be_v thy_o heart_n right_a as_o my_o heart_n be_v with_o thy_o heart_n etc._n etc._n with_o thy_o heart_n so_o as_o to_o approve_v thou_o and_o to_o own_v thou_o in_o that_o which_o thou_o be_v about_o thus_o elishae_n heart_n go_v not_o with_o he_o but_o how_o then_o namely_o in_o a_o way_n of_o carefulness_n and_o suspicion_n and_o holy_a jealousy_n towards_o he_o thus_o in_o a_o ordinary_a way_n may_v the_o prophet_n heart_n be_v with_o his_o servant_n in_o his_o absence_n from_o he_o as_o to_o take_v care_n what_o may_v befall_v he_o and_o how_o he_o will_v even_o to_o be_v solicitous_a for_o they_o lest_o they_o shall_v fall_v into_o any_o temptation_n which_o they_o may_v be_v exercise_v and_o surprise_v withal_o thus_o i_o say_v be_v master_n to_o be_v towards_o their_o servant_n not_o only_o to_o have_v a_o watchful_a eye_n over_o they_o when_o they_o be_v at_o home_n with_o they_o and_o in_o the_o house_n but_o likewise_o to_o take_v think_v therefore_o from_o hence_o by_o the_o way_n may_v we_o make_v a_o discovery_n to_o ourselves_o of_o god_n delight_n in_o ourselves_o namely_o according_a to_o this_o answerable_a effect_n which_o it_o have_v upon_o our_o own_o heart_n if_o so_o be_v he_o delight_v in_o we_o we_o shall_v also_o delight_v in_o he_o and_o we_o may_v know_v the_o one_o by_o the_o other_o those_o that_o shall_v say_v unto_o god_n depart_v from_o we_o for_o we_o desire_v not_o the_o knowledge_n of_o thy_o way_n those_o that_o care_v not_o to_o approach_v to_o god_n nor_o to_o enjoy_v any_o communion_n with_o he_o god_n himself_o and_o have_v opportunity_n of_o communion_n with_o he_o yet_o these_o they_o be_v now_o taint_v in_o he_o the_o very_a instrument_n of_o the_o churl_n be_v evil_a keel_n kilai_n as_o the_o prophet_n isaiah_n speak_v and_o he_o devise_v wicked_a device_n as_o he_o there_o express_v it_o isa_n 32.7_o this_o be_v a_o lamentation_n and_o shall_v be_v a_o lamentation_n the_o thought_n of_o foolishness_n be_v sin_n as_o solomon_n tell_v we_o and_o so_o to_o be_v esteem_v by_o we_o a_o corrupt_a judgement_n a_o luxurious_a fancy_n a_o unmortified_a and_o unsavoury_a spirit_n be_v such_o thing_n as_o be_v look_v at_o by_o god_n as_o have_v great_a guiltiness_n in_o they_o although_o not_o present_o break_v forth_o into_o actual_a abomination_n look_v as_o in_o matter_n of_o goodness_n god_n accept_v of_o the_o will_n for_o the_o deed_n and_o regard_v the_o very_a desire_n of_o his_o servant_n towards_o that_o which_o be_v their_o duty_n though_o they_o may_v be_v kindred_n and_o prevent_v of_o performance_n as_o david_n when_o he_o will_v build_v god_n a_o house_n though_o he_o have_v not_o a_o opportunity_n for_o it_o yet_o the_o lord_n tell_v he_o this_o that_o he_o do_v well_o that_o it_o be_v in_o his_o heart_n even_o so_o on_o the_o contrary_a in_o evil_a god_n account_v of_o the_o purpose_n for_o the_o commission_n when_o there_o be_v but_o some_o outwatd_v restraint_n upon_o the_o person_n and_o a_o evil_a heart_n be_v to_o he_o a_o evil_a life_n be_v that_o which_o do_v natural_o lead_v and_o tend_v unto_o it_o they_o bacame_v vain_a in_o their_o imagination_n and_o their_o foolish_a heart_n be_v darken_v and_o so_o god_n give_v they_o up_o to_o uncleanness_n through_o the_o lust_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n to_o dishonour_v their_o own_o body_n between_o themselves_o rom._n 1.21_o 24._o and_o that_o we_o walk_v not_o as_o other_o gentile_n walk_v in_o the_o vanity_n of_o their_o mind_n ephes_n 4.17_o therefore_o in_o the_o next_o place_n be_v persuade_v of_o the_o evil_a of_o it_o let_v we_o be_v careful_a to_o look_v to_o it_o o_o you_o son_n of_o man_n how_o long_o will_v you_o love_v vanity_n as_o the_o influence_n so_o far_o according_o shall_v we_o have_v a_o care_n and_o respect_n to_o ourselves_o now_o thus_o he_o have_v to_o the_o thought_n and_o cogitation_n and_o therefore_o he_o be_v usual_o describe_v by_o such_o a_o title_n as_o this_o be_v of_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d that_o search_v the_o heart_n and_o tri_v the_o reins_o man_n may_v sometime_o guess_v and_o conjecture_v but_o god_n he_o have_v absolute_a and_o certain_a knowledge_n he_o know_v what_o be_v in_o man_n as_o be_v say_v of_o christ_n all_o this_o show_v how_o religion_n do_v reach_v itself_o and_o extend_v to_o the_o thought_n this_o therefore_o meet_v with_o the_o conceit_n of_o such_o person_n as_o confine_v it_o only_o to_o the_o outward_a man_n who_o think_v that_o thought_n be_v free_a as_o they_o as_o of_o ourselves_o etc._n etc._n now_o these_o evil_a thought_n which_o we_o now_o speak_v of_o an_z which_z according_o be_v to_o be_v forsake_v they_o may_v be_v rank_v into_o three_o sort_n especial_o 1._o as_o to_o matter_n of_o opinion_n 2._o of_o contemplation_n 3._o of_o design_n first_o as_o to_o matter_n of_o opinion_n take_v a_o man_n in_o his_o natural_a condition_n and_o he_o have_v many_o strange_a conceit_n in_o his_o head_n whilst_o he_o so_o remain_v as_o it_o be_v say_v concern_v the_o gentile_n rom._n 1.21_o they_o become_v vain_a in_o their_o imagination_n and_o their_o foolish_a heart_n be_v darken_v even_o so_o be_v it_o with_o such_o person_n they_o bring_v religion_n oftentimes_o to_o their_o carnal_a and_o corrupt_a reason_n and_o confine_v it_o to_o that_o but_o now_o convert_v grace_n where_o it_o come_v it_o overthrow_v they_o all_o cast_v down_o imagination_n etc._n etc._n 2_o cor._n 10.5_o to_o instance_n in_o some_o few_o particular_n first_o the_o thought_n of_o sin_n when_o a_o man_n be_v convert_v he_o forsake_v these_o and_o it_o concern_v he_o to_o do_v so_o take_v a_o man_n in_o his_o natural_a condition_n and_o he_o many_o religion_n this_o be_v the_o righteousness_n especial_o of_o the_o scribe_n which_o be_v famous_a as_o i_o hint_v before_o in_o this_o respect_n they_o be_v man_n of_o great_a knowledge_n and_o understanding_n in_o divine_a matter_n and_o this_o i_o call_v righteousness_n in_o they_o by_o take_v this_o word_n in_o the_o text_n with_o chrysostom_n in_o the_o great_a latitude_n for_o the_o whole_a compass_n and_o extent_n of_o virtue_n whether_o in_o reference_n to_o judgement_n or_o practice_n but_o yet_o such_o as_o will_v not_o serve_v the_o turn_n to_o bring_v a_o man_n to_o heaven_n a_o man_n may_v have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o illumination_n and_o yet_o never_o be_v partaker_n of_o salvation_n he_o may_v know_v very_o much_o of_o the_o scripture_n &_o word_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o theory_n of_o religion_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o than_o go_v to_o hell_n we_o shall_v find_v if_o we_o look_v into_o rom._n 2.17_o how_o the_o apostle_n take_v up_o such_o a_o murder_n and_o such_o like_a this_o we_o may_v see_v in_o the_o account_n which_o that_o pharisee_fw-mi there_o in_o the_o gospel_n give_v of_o himself_o as_o a_o ground_n of_o his_o justification_n luk._n 18.11_o god_n i_o thank_v thou_o that_o i_o be_o not_o as_o other_o man_n be_v extorioner_n unjust_a adulterer_n or_o even_o as_o this_o publican_n and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o many_o other_o external_a part_n and_o practice_n of_o religion_n those_o pharisee_n they_o be_v very_a famon_n for_o this_o and_o it_o be_v a_o great_a part_n of_o their_o righteousness_n to_o conform_v hereunte_n prayer_n and_o fast_v and_o read_v and_o hear_v and_o the_o ceremonious_a observation_n of_o the_o sabbath_n they_o be_v very_o strict_a and_o exact_a in_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o be_v and_o more_o than_o any_o other_o beside_o and_o yet_o all_o this_o be_v very_o short_a and_o defective_a in_o their_o being_n nothing_o else_o with_o it_o and_o be_v likewise_o in_o any_o other_o whatsoever_o though_o such_o duty_n as_o these_o be_v to_o be_v perform_v and_o they_o be_v accountable_a which_o be_v neglective_a of_o they_o yet_o if_o man_n have_v nothing_o to_o say_v for_o defective_a and_o this_o righteousness_n be_v such_o as_o be_v to_o be_v exceed_v by_o all_o that_o will_v be_v save_v though_o it_o carry_v a_o great_a speciousness_n and_o show_v of_o excellency_n with_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v such_o as_o do_v not_o render_v they_o who_o be_v the_o subject_n of_o it_o acceptable_a or_o well-pleasing_a to_o god_n no_o more_o do_v any_o other_o righteousness_n of_o the_o like_a nature_n or_o condition_n with_o it_o the_o righteousness_n of_o mere_a civil_a and_o moral_a person_n it_o be_v not_o that_o which_o will_v do_v the_o deed_n or_o serve_v the_o turn_n increase_v of_o love_n it_o be_v the_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a enjoyment_n of_o one_o another_o society_n and_o a_o improve_n of_o the_o communion_n of_o saint_n and_o what_o be_v the_o accessary_a and_o adventitious_a why_o this_o be_v to_o be_v careful_a about_o many_o thing_n great_a provision_n and_o great_a expense_n and_o great_a entertainment_n now_o see_v which_o of_o these_o be_v to_o be_v prefer_v by_o the_o rule_n here_o before_o we_o again_o further_a take_v it_o in_o man_n dwelling_n and_o the_o contrivance_n of_o their_o habitation_n the_o shall_v still_o look_v at_o that_o which_o be_v most_o needful_a not_o only_o as_o to_o corporal_a or_o secular_a accommodation_n but_o as_o to_o spiritual_a it_o be_v that_o which_o be_v not_o always_o do_v by_o abundance_n of_o person_n man_n common_o look_v at_o the_o goodness_n of_o the_o air_n at_o the_o convenience_n of_o the_o soil_n at_o the_o pleasantness_n of_o the_o situation_n what_o it_o for_o trade_n what_o it_o be_v for_o health_n what_o it_o be_v for_o pleasure_n and_o it_o may_v not_o be_v amiss_o in_o they_o to_o do_v so_o but_o be_v there_o nothing_o else_o to_o be_v regard_v by_o they_o but_o only_o these_o or_o be_v these_o the_o chief_a and_o the_o principal_a what_o be_v the_o mean_n for_o heaven_n and_o salvation_n and_o spiritual_a improvement_n what_o ministry_n what_o company_n what_o neighbourhood_n what_o opportunity_n for_o goodness_n alas_o these_o be_v thing_n which_o many_o people_n never_o take_v care_n of_o or_o trouble_v themselves_o withal_o and_o they_o common_o speed_v according_o as_o we_o may_v see_v a_o sad_a instance_n of_o it_o even_o in_o righteous_a lot_n a_o good_a man_n but_o oversee_v in_o this_o particular_a and_o according_o he_o smart_v for_o it_o he_o make_v choice_n of_o sodom_n to_o dwell_v in_o because_o of_o the_o sweetness_n and_o pleasantness_n of_o the_o situation_n but_o never_o consider_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o inhabitant_n and_o the_o person_n which_o he_o shall_v live_v withal_o and_o what_o be_v the_o issue_n of_o it_o in_o conclusion_n why_o namely_o this_o that_o he_o be_v vex_v with_o the_o filthy_a conversation_n of_o the_o wicked_a for_o that_o righteous_a man_n dwell_v among_o they_o in_o see_v and_o hear_v vex_v his_o righteous_a soul_n from_o day_n to_o day_n with_o their_o unlawful_a deed_n as_o the_o marriage_n and_o the_o alter_n of_o man_n condition_n in_o the_o world_n what_o be_v the_o one_o thing_n needful_a why_o it_o be_v a_o suitableness_n and_o agreeableness_n to_o each_o other_o as_o much_o as_o can_v be_v endeavour_v a_o meet_a help_n as_o god_n himself_o provide_v for_o adam_n and_o especial_o in_o the_o best_a thing_n of_o all_o which_o be_v to_o bring_v one_o another_o to_o heaven_n such_o as_o may_v continue_v and_o keep_v up_o the_o church_n both_o in_o themselves_o and_o in_o a_o godly_a posterity_n through_o the_o care_n which_o shall_v be_v take_v by_o they_o to_o that_o purpose_n but_o alas_o these_o be_v thing_n which_o the_o world_n little_a look_n after_o but_o rather_o other_o matter_n of_o far_o inferior_a consideration_n but_o we_o see_v here_o what_o needful_a and_o that_o be_v the_o second_o use_n and_o application_n which_o we_o may_v make_v of_o this_o doctrine_n the_o three_o be_v this_o that_o see_v but_o one_o thing_n be_v needful_a we_o shall_v therefore_o take_v heed_n of_o all_o needless_a and_o frivolous_a distraction_n in_o ourselves_o see_v god_n have_v be_v please_v to_o draw_v our_o happiness_n into_o so_o close_a and_o abound_v with_o the_o excellency_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o adorn_v of_o the_o inward_a man_n all_o perfection_n beside_o without_o these_o be_v very_o imperfect_a and_o such_o as_o be_v true_o consider_v be_v of_o no_o account_n at_o all_o wealth_n what_o be_v that_o if_o a_o man_n be_v not_o rich_a in_o faith_n and_o rich_a in_o good_a work_n and_o rich_a towards_o god_n what_o be_v it_o to_o have_v a_o inheritance_n here_o except_o a_o man_n have_v a_o inheritance_n hereafter_o which_o be_v reserve_v and_o lay_v up_o for_o he_o in_o a_o better_a place_n except_o a_o man_n be_v a_o heir_n of_o heaven_n and_o a_o co-heir_n of_o christ_n this_o be_v that_o wealth_n which_o be_v needful_a and_o learning_n what_o be_v that_o if_o a_o man_n be_v not_o wise_a to_o salvation_n and_o endue_v with_o knowledge_n from_o above_o and_o acquaint_v with_o the_o mystery_n of_o religion_n and_o skilled_a in_o the_o depth_n of_o satan_n and_o exercise_v in_o his_o own_o heart_n this_o be_v the_o necessary_a knowledge_n beauty_n what_o be_v that_o where_o there_o be_v not_o a_o inward_a meekness_n
again_o so_o grace_n in_o the_o great_a decay_n it_o have_v still_o a_o root_n at_o the_o bottom_n and_o there_o be_v life_n at_o the_o heart_n when_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o body_n be_v as_o it_o be_v dead_a that_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n here_o considerable_a it_o shall_v not_o be_v lose_v or_o take_v away_o in_o regard_n of_o its_o root_n and_o principle_n the_o second_o be_v in_o regard_n of_o its_o operation_n and_o effect_n which_o it_o work_v in_o the_o heart_n the_o better_a part_n shall_v not_o be_v take_v away_o thus_o it_o still_o leave_v somewhat_o behind_o it_o which_o be_v sure_a to_o stick_v fast_o those_o who_o be_v conversant_a in_o holy_a duty_n and_o well_o employ_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o religion_n they_o still_o get_v somewhat_o or_o other_o which_o hereupon_o cleave_v unto_o they_o either_o more_o knowledge_n or_o more_o favour_n or_o more_o affection_n or_o more_o comfort_n or_o somewhat_o there_o be_v a_o better_a tincture_n and_o impression_n upon_o they_o than_o be_v before_o and_o so_o it_o continue_v other_o thing_n as_o the_o vanity_n of_o the_o world_n they_o pass_v with_o the_o very_a act_n of_o they_o and_o they_o leave_v behind_o it_o it_o abide_v and_o remain_v still_o when_o the_o ordinance_n cease_v yet_o the_o effect_n of_o they_o still_o continue_v and_o when_o the_o bible_n itself_o be_v lose_v yet_o the_o benefit_n which_o come_v by_o read_v of_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v lose_v nor_o take_v away_o with_o it_o it_o hold_v in_o regard_n of_o its_o effect_n three_o in_o regard_n of_o its_o reward_n and_o recompense_n both_o here_o in_o this_o life_n and_o in_o another_o world_n it_o shall_v not_o be_v take_v away_o so_o neither_o there_o be_v no_o man_n that_o shall_v lose_v any_o thing_n by_o heart_n and_o give_v they_o a_o further_a savour_n and_o relish_v of_o those_o thing_n which_o they_o know_v in_o part_n already_o which_o be_v the_o great_a difference_n betwixt_o they_o and_o other_o man_n take_v common_a and_o ordinary_a person_n who_o have_v no_o work_n of_o grace_n at_o all_o in_o they_o and_o they_o have_v many_o time_n a_o great_a deal_n of_o knowledge_n in_o the_o doctrine_n and_o point_n of_o religion_n so_o far_o as_o belong_v to_o the_o brain_n and_o be_v able_a to_o discourse_v it_o may_v be_v pretty_a large_o and_o plausible_o of_o they_o but_o now_o a_o good_a christian_a indeed_o he_o have_v another_o kind_n of_o knowledge_n of_o they_o he_o see_v spiritual_a truth_n by_o a_o spiritual_a light_n that_o which_o other_o discourse_v of_o he_o feel_v and_o have_v his_o heart_n transform_v and_o change_v into_o the_o nature_n of_o they_o thus_o he_o know_v the_o scripture_n and_o write_v word_n to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n not_o only_o from_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o church_n but_o from_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o as_o find_v in_o his_o own_o soul_n the_o working_n and_o impression_n of_o it_o as_o austin_n sometime_o profess_v it_o for_o his_o own_o particular_a this_o be_v that_o according_o which_o we_o shall_v labour_v to_o find_v in_o ourselves_o as_o be_v that_o which_o will_v be_v of_o great_a use_n and_o benefit_n to_o we_o and_o most_o likely_a to_o hold_v out_o with_o we_o it_o be_v the_o best_a and_o ready_a way_n to_o perseverance_n and_o continuance_n and_o abidance_n in_o the_o truth_n when_o it_o be_v thus_o wrought_v and_o rivet_v into_o we_o when_o the_o doctrine_n of_o religion_n be_v mere_o notional_a and_o speculative_a as_o swim_v and_o float_v in_o the_o understanding_n man_n do_v more_o easy_o let_v they_o go_v and_o part_n with_o they_o but_o when_o christ_n by_o his_o spirit_n do_v seal_v they_o and_o engrave_v they_o upon_o the_o heart_n than_o they_o be_v sure_a and_o certain_a and_o we_o shall_v constant_o hold_v they_o out_o even_o to_o the_o end_n again_o for_o a_o further_a explication_n of_o this_o point_n as_o christ_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o witness_n
