kingdom_n of_o god_n say_v the_o apostle_n be_v not_o meat_n and_o drink_v but_o righteousness_n and_o peace_n and_o joy_n in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o that_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n consist_v possession_n of_o it_o in_o this_o life_n shall_v never_o possess_v it_o in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v none_o shall_v rise_v and_o reign_v with_o christ_n which_o do_v not_o with_o he_o here_o therefore_o most_o excellent_a treasure_n for_o if_o that_o be_v a_o treasure_n which_o if_o a_o man_n have_v he_o need_v nothing_o else_o and_o without_o which_o if_o he_o have_v all_o thing_n he_o have_v nothing_o then_o may_v this_o right_o be_v call_v a_o treasure_n for_o all_o thing_n without_o they_o be_v nothing_o and_o these_o without_o all_o other_o thing_n be_v sufficient_a for_o our_o salvation_n therefore_o this_o be_v so_o great_a and_o inestimable_a a_o treasure_n be_v high_o to_o be_v esteem_v of_o us._n have_v we_o this_o treasure_n then_o we_o need_v not_o to_o esteem_v of_o all_o other_o thing_n in_o judgement_n man_n do_v see_v that_o the_o only_a treasure_n of_o man_n be_v the_o salvation_n of_o the_o soul_n this_o be_v a_o grant_v rule_n neither_o do_v this_o need_n so_o much_o to_o be_v prove_v unto_o
they_o their_o sin_n tell_v they_o of_o a_o surety_n that_o their_o iniquity_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o christ_n his_o death_n whereby_o a_o certain_a care_n begin_v to_o be_v wrought_v in_o they_o in_o so_o much_o that_o be_v thus_o trouble_v they_o inquire_v and_o say_v man_n and_o brethren_n what_o shall_v we_o do_v whereupon_o afterward_o follow_v the_o second_o sermon_n of_o peter_n where_o in_o these_o word_n then_o peter_n say_v unto_o they_o amend_v your_o life_n etc._n etc._n three_o be_v set_v down_o the_o fruit_n of_o their_o obedience_n in_o the_o former_a part_n of_o this_o chapter_n we_o may_v know_v the_o wonderful_a work_n of_o god_n that_o the_o apostle_n who_o be_v never_o bring_v up_o in_o school_n speak_v with_o diverse_a tongue_n which_o when_o the_o multitude_n hear_v some_o be_v say_v to_o marvel_n and_o to_o be_v astonish_v some_o mock_v they_o and_o say_v they_o be_v full_a of_o new_a wine_n but_o when_o peter_n with_o great_a boldness_n of_o spirit_n have_v in_o this_o sermon_n which_o he_o make_v set_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n against_o their_o false_a accusation_n and_o have_v preach_v against_o their_o sin_n than_o they_o leave_v off_o mock_v and_o be_v prick_v in_o their_o heart_n where_o first_o we_o may_v note_v the_o power_n of_o god_n word_n which_o only_o be_v able_a to_o touch_v our_o conscience_n for_o sin_n for_o sinner_n neither_o the_o diversity_n of_o tongue_n nor_o other_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n can_v prick_v their_o heart_n as_o be_v able_a only_o to_o cast_v they_o into_o a_o admiration_n what_o more_o forcible_a thing_n than_o that_o which_o cause_v a_o godly_a sorrow_n and_o cause_v our_o conscience_n to_o be_v prick_v what_o so_o able_a to_o prick_v our_o conscience_n as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n indeed_o many_o feel_v sorrow_n and_o be_v inward_o prick_v but_o because_o therewith_o be_v not_o join_v the_o power_n of_o god_n word_n they_o be_v either_o senseless_a as_o block_n or_o in_o their_o feel_n they_o be_v murmurer_n this_o come_v unto_o we_o by_o the_o dignity_n of_o god_n word_n in_o that_o no_o wonder_n from_o heaven_n no_o miracle_n on_o earth_n can_v touch_v our_o heart_n and_o work_v in_o we_o any_o good_a fruit_n without_o the_o same_o for_o though_o the_o lord_n shall_v show_v unto_o we_o all_o the_o wonder_n from_o heaven_n which_o he_o show_v on_o the_o old_a world_n and_o on_o sodom_n although_o he_o shall_v lay_v all_o the_o plague_n upon_o we_o which_o he_o lay_v on_o pharaoh_n and_o on_o the_o egyptian_n without_o the_o word_n of_o god_n we_o shall_v be_v as_o unprofitable_a beholder_n as_o ever_o be_v the_o sodomite_n and_o shall_v become_v as_o hard_o heart_a as_o ever_o be_v pharaoh_n and_o the_o egyptian_n so_o that_o no_o judgement_n from_o heaven_n no_o trouble_n from_o earth_n can_v humble_v way_n we_o no_o blessing_n from_o above_o no_o benefit_n from_o beneath_o can_v profit_v we_o until_o the_o word_n of_o god_n come_v which_o teach_v the_o old_a way_n to_o forsake_v it_o the_o new_a way_n to_o enter_v into_o it_o and_o the_o perfect_a way_n to_o continue_v in_o it_o and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o general_a scope_n of_o this_o doctrine_n now_o more_o particular_o we_o may_v observe_v in_o this_o first_o part_n three_o thing_n first_o the_o power_n note_n of_o the_o word_n to_o prick_v our_o conscience_n second_o that_o this_o prick_n must_v not_o cause_v in_o we_o a_o more_o rebel_a against_o the_o word_n and_o minister_n thereof_o but_o rather_o a_o great_a reverence_n to_o they_o both_o three_o such_o prick_v must_v prepare_v we_o to_o a_o great_a desire_n to_o profit_n for_o the_o first_o sin_n we_o must_v know_v that_o this_o be_v the_o begin_n of_o repentance_n &_o this_o be_v the_o entry_n to_o godliness_n even_o to_o conceive_v a_o sorrow_n for_o our_o sin_n and_o so_o be_v wound_v with_o a_o feel_n of_o our_o evil_n for_o as_o long_o as_o man_n be_v secure_a it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o they_o shall_v serious_o apply_v their_o mind_n unto_o doctrine_n neither_o without_o the_o knowledge_n and_o feel_n of_o our_o sin_n can_v we_o hearty_o long_v for_o christ._n to_o this_o agree_v the_o law_n the_o prophet_n and_o the_o apostle_n the_o law_n because_o in_o all_o their_o sacrifice_n wherein_o christ_n be_v prefigure_v be_v manifest_v also_o under_o dark_a sign_n the_o contrition_n of_o heart_n and_o acknowledge_v their_o unworthiness_n the_o prophet_n as_o david_n and_o isaiah_n david_n in_o the_o four_o psalm_n and_o five_o verse_n faith_n tremble_v and_o sin_v not_o where_o the_o prophet_n show_v that_o this_o be_v a_o effectual_a thing_n to_o true_a repentance_n to_o quake_v and_o 5._o tremble_v for_o fear_n of_o god_n judgement_n that_o we_o may_v then_o true_o examine_v ourselves_o we_o must_v fear_v and_o humble_v ourselves_o because_o before_o trouble_v terror_n and_o quake_v at_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n we_o will_v never_o be_v bring_v to_o offer_v ourselves_o to_o christ_n alone_o in_o psalm_n 51._o vers_fw-la 18._o 19_o the_o prophet_n likewise_o show_v that_o no_o sacrifice_n be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n without_o a_o contrite_a heart_n that_o be_v neither_o prayer_n neither_o almes-giving_a neither_o praise_n of_o thanksgiving_n unless_o we_o bring_v a_o humble_a and_o contrite_a spirit_n with_o we_o cast_v ourselves_o down_o before_o his_o judgement_n seat_n and_o sue_v for_o mercy_n in_o christ._n and_o here_o mark_v that_o he_o say_v the_o sacrifice_n of_o god_n be_v a_o trouble_a spirit_n etc._n etc._n where_o he_o use_v the_o plural_a number_n show_v that_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o repentance_n which_o must_v not_o be_v one_o but_o many_o be_v humbleness_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o contrition_n of_o heart_n for_o the_o affliction_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o contrition_n of_o the_o mind_n do_v so_o cast_v we_o down_o wound_v with_o our_o sin_n and_o humble_v with_o a_o feel_n of_o god_n wrath_n as_o that_o it_o make_v we_o to_o acknowledge_v that_o we_o be_v nothing_o of_o ourselves_o and_o to_o seek_v for_o our_o salvation_n whole_o at_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n no_o marvel_v then_o see_v by_o this_o mean_v we_o be_v confound_v and_o ashamed_a of_o ourselves_o &_o stay_v ourselves_o on_o the_o only_a promise_n of_o god_n do_v come_v to_o confess_v our_o own_o nakedness_n and_o wretchedness_n if_o the_o prophet_n shall_v say_v that_o the_o lord_n be_v please_v with_o his_o sacrifice_n as_o with_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o sacrifice_n the_o prophet_n isaiah_n 40._o 6._o 7._o 8._o say_v all_o flesh_n be_v grass_n and_o the_o beauty_n thereof_o as_o a_o flower_n of_o grass_n the_o grass_n wither_v and_o the_o 8._o flower_n fall_v when_o the_o breath_n of_o the_o lord_n fall_v upon_o it_o where_o the_o prophet_n paint_v out_o man_n in_o his_o proper_a colour_n and_o drive_v he_o to_o seek_v out_o salvation_n not_o in_o himself_o but_o in_o christ_n describe_v the_o outward_a part_n of_o man_n to_o be_v as_o grass_n and_o by_o the_o flower_n of_o grass_n he_o show_v his_o gift_n of_o mind_n be_v unregenerate_a as_o wisdom_n memory_n knowledge_n and_o understanding_n so_o that_o when_o god_n spirit_n do_v but_o breath_n on_o we_o all_o our_o wisdom_n all_o our_o knowledge_n riches_n and_o authority_n fall_v before_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n neither_o can_v we_o remain_v but_o only_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n whereby_o we_o be_v bear_v again_o wherefore_o the_o consider_v and_o meditate_v of_o our_o transitory_a estate_n drive_v we_o to_o a_o contrition_n and_o humbleness_n of_o spirit_n beside_o the_o lord_n god_n say_v isaiah_n who_o the_o heaven_n can_v contain_v nor_o the_o earth_n hold_v 15._o will_v come_v and_o dwell_v with_o a_o he_o be_v not_o only_o a_o layer_n of_o ambushment_n but_o of_o spiritual_a ambushment_n yet_o note_n though_o they_o be_v spiritual_a yet_o not_o in_o goodness_n but_o in_o wickedness_n in_o heavenly_a thing_n though_o satan_n be_v the_o prince_n of_o the_o air_n yet_o here_o it_o be_v mean_v that_o he_o fight_v against_o man_n in_o heavenly_a knowledge_n by_o creation_n they_o have_v much_o good_a knowledge_n their_o goodness_n they_o have_v lose_v their_o knowledge_n be_v retain_v again_o paul_n say_v there_o be_v a_o mystery_n of_o iniquity_n show_v that_o as_o there_o be_v a_o mystery_n of_o godliness_n so_o there_o be_v a_o mystery_n of_o wickedness_n and_o therefore_o satan_n be_v say_v to_o change_v himself_o into_o a_o angel_n of_o light_n which_o be_v because_o he_o will_v come_v in_o good_a thing_n in_o knowledge_n in_o spiritual_a exercise_n and_o false_o and_o wicked_o gloze_v on_o they_o by_o that_o great_a practice_n and_o experience_n which_o from_o their_o first_o fall_n they_o have_v learn_v thus_o satan_n come_v even_o in_o good_a thing_n worldly_n wise_a man_n distinguish_v whether_o the_o enemy_n by_o strength_n or_o by_o subtlety_n do_v most_o â—â—rt_n conclude_v that_o the_o subtle_a enemy_n be_v most_o dangerous_a alas_o we_o be_v in_o evil_a case_n then_o hâ—â—ing_v to_o do_v with_o enemy_n not_o only_o strong_a but_o subtle_a it_o be_v enough_o to_o deal_v with_o a_o enemy_n have_v but_o one_o of_o these_o quality_n but_o we_o fight_v with_o they_o that_o have_v both_o that_o be_v both_o strength_n &_o subtlety_n so_o that_o we_o know_v not_o whether_o they_o be_v more_o strong_a or_o more_o subtle_a too_o use_v there_o be_v of_o this_o doctrine_n one_o be_v we_o must_v not_o make_v it_o a_o slight_a matter_n of_o the_o eâ—â—â—ie_n the_o other_o be_v that_o we_o be_v not_o too_o much_o afraid_a both_o these_o be_v dangerous_a extremity_n some_o vile_a heretic_n deny_v there_o be_v a_o god_n or_o a_o devil_n or_o that_o the_o devil_n be_v so_o strong_a and_o subtle_a as_o he_o be_v indeed_o man_n will_v not_o speak_v thus_o but_o they_o show_v it_o by_o their_o peace_n in_o themselves_o in_o their_o life_n which_o show_v that_o man_n do_v not_o believe_v there_o be_v a_o battle_n for_o we_o see_v we_o be_v now_o at_o peace_n and_o why_o because_o there_o be_v no_o enemy_n but_o be_v it_o so_o that_o the_o enemy_n be_v in_o the_o field_n will_v we_o not_o fear_v do_v we_o believe_v that_o satan_n can_v sit_v in_o our_o conscience_n delude_a judgement_n and_o understanding_n and_o cast_v a_o mist_n on_o reason_n will_v we_o â—â—â—t_v be_v more_o jealous_a of_o reason_n will_v we_o not_o be_v more_o fearful_a of_o ourselves_o yes_o sure_o let_v we_o then_o consider_v that_o beside_o ourselves_o the_o end_n of_o all_o their_o labour_n in_o what_o measure_n they_o obtain_v that_o in_o that_o measure_n they_o be_v quiet_a though_o they_o want_v other_o thing_n but_o in_o what_o measure_n they_o do_v not_o find_v that_o in_o that_o measure_n be_v they_o grieve_v though_o they_o abound_v in_o outward_a thing_n when_o a_o man_n be_v of_o this_o mind_n when_o he_o have_v this_o heart_n when_o he_o have_v this_o good_a will_n to_o learn_v then_o among_o many_o other_o blessing_n he_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o find_v that_o which_o follow_v in_o this_o verse_n knowledge_n shall_v be_v easy_a then_o if_o they_o be_v good_a for_o we_o we_o shall_v have_v they_o or_o else_o some_o spiritual_a grace_n which_o with_o the_o better_a shall_v supply_v care_v the_o want_n therefore_o the_o cark_n and_o greedy_a care_n of_o these_o thing_n be_v leave_v to_o the_o godless_a which_o be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o of_o god_n providence_n favour_n 3._o we_o may_v not_o
