doubtful_a disputation_n the_o greek_a text_n have_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d the_o vulgar_a version_n non_fw-la disceptationes_fw-la cogitationum_fw-la beza_n non_fw-la ad_fw-la altercationes_fw-la disceptationum_fw-la that_o be_v not_o to_o a_o debate_n of_o dispute_n or_o as_o some_o expound_v it_o more_o proper_o with_o augustine_n not_o to_o judge_v of_o thought_n that_o be_v to_o say_v do_v not_o set_v yourselves_o as_o judge_n over_o his_o thought_n to_o reject_v he_o because_o of_o his_o weakness_n of_o faith_n which_o afterward_o he_o appli_v chief_o to_o those_o who_o though_o they_o have_v receive_v the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n and_o believe_v to_o obtain_v salvation_n by_o his_o grace_n yet_o do_v observe_v the_o distinction_n of_o day_n and_o meat_n or_o make_v a_o scruple_n whether_o they_o may_v eat_v such_o meat_n without_o sin_n and_o offence_n which_o god_n himself_o have_v forbid_v in_o the_o law_n though_o some_o will_v have_v understand_v thereby_o the_o meat_n offer_v to_o idol_n concern_v which_o 1_o cor._n 8_o he_o teach_v almost_o the_o very_a same_o doctrine_n where_o the_o apostle_n exhort_v those_o that_o be_v strong_a in_o faith_n who_o have_v sufficient_a knowledge_n that_o such_o distinction_n of_o meat_n and_o day_n in_o the_o law_n be_v now_o not_o any_o more_o requisite_a according_a the_o gospel_n in_o christ_n but_o be_v a_o mere_a indifferent_a thing_n that_o they_o nevertheless_o shall_v not_o contemn_v or_o condemn_v such_o as_o be_v weak_a in_o faith_n who_o have_v not_o yet_o the_o knowledge_n of_o their_o liberty_n or_o be_v doubtful_a of_o it_o nor_o shall_v judge_v their_o thought_n why_o they_o do_v abstain_v from_o such_o meat_n but_o receive_v they_o in_o love_n and_o charity_n moreover_o he_o give_v to_o they_o both_o this_o rule_n verse_n 3._o let_v he_o that_o eat_v understand_v every_o thing_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o liberty_n of_o the_o gospel_n not_o despise_v he_o that_o eat_v word_n follow_v let_v we_o not_o therefore_o judge_v one_o another_o any_o more_o viz._n in_o such_o a_o manner_n whereby_o we_o shall_v reject_v one_o another_o and_o not_o receive_v one_o another_o in_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o necessary_a and_o indifferent_a and_o notwithstanding_o be_v account_v to_o be_v necessary_a by_o some_o out_o of_o their_o weakness_n of_o faith_n out_o of_o which_o liberty_n of_o the_o gospel_n according_a to_o which_o they_o do_v declare_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o law_n which_o they_o have_v receive_v from_o christ_n and_o the_o apostle_n and_o although_o those_o do_v great_o err_v in_o the_o letter_n of_o the_o law_n which_o be_v not_o intend_v for_o the_o time_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n among_o the_o gentile_n but_o have_v its_o reference_n only_o to_o the_o old_a testament_n yet_o the_o apostle_n will_v that_o none_o shall_v judge_v despise_v or_o reject_v the_o other_o neither_o in_o their_o faith_n nor_o work_n but_o receive_v he_o as_o a_o weak_a brother_n in_o faith_n whereunto_o this_o observation_n ought_v to_o be_v annex_v that_o the_o apostle_n do_v speak_v only_o of_o those_o who_o out_o of_o mere_a weakness_n and_o fear_n to_o transgress_v the_o law_n make_v it_o a_o matter_n of_o necessity_n or_o at_o least_o a_o scruple_n of_o it_o to_o who_o it_o will_v have_v be_v sin_n if_o they_o have_v eat_v of_o the_o forbid_a meat_n against_o their_o own_o though_o erroneous_a conscience_n according_a to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o apostle_n verse_n 23._o he_o that_o doubt_v be_v damn_v if_o he_o eat_v viz._n against_o his_o own_o conscience_n because_o be_v eat_v not_o of_o faith_n for_o whatsoever_o be_v not_o of_o faith_n be_v sin_n but_o those_o that_o rather_o out_o of_o malice_n and_o obstinacy_n than_o out_o of_o mere_a weakness_n and_o fear_n do_v make_v it_o necessary_a after_o such_o a_o manner_n that_o they_o not_o only_o for_o themselves_o believe_v and_o do_v it_o but_o also_o enforce_v it_o upon_o the_o believer_n among_o the_o gentile_n as_o necessary_a to_o their_o own_o and_o other_o man_n salvation_n without_o any_o true_a ground_n from_o god_n word_n and_o consequent_o beside_o the_o distinction_n of_o meat_n and_o day_n do_v press_v upon_o they_o the_o necessity_n of_o the_o whole_a ceremonial_a law_n circumcision_n sacrifice_n etc._n etc._n and_o therefore_o condemn_v and_o revile_v the_o apostle_n paul_n and_o other_o as_o enemy_n to_o the_o law_n who_o do_v faithful_o maintain_v and_o defend_v the_o liberty_n of_o the_o gospel_n those_o i_o say_v the_o apostle_n by_o the_o virtue_n of_o his_o apostleship_n have_v very_o earnest_o judge_v reprove_v and_o condemn_v yea_o stigmatise_v and_o brand_v with_o a_o anathema_n especial_o in_o his_o epistle_n to_o the_o galatian_n chap._n 1._o vers_fw-la 8_o 9_o if_o any_o man_n though_o a_o angel_n from_o heaven_n preach_v any_o other_o gospel_n unto_o you_o then_o that_o you_o have_v receive_v
and_o word_n to_o the_o doctrine_n practice_n worship_n whereby_o any_o offence_n may_v be_v give_v then_o to_o the_o person_n and_o that_o primary_o to_o our_o own_o affair_n word_n and_o work_n whereby_o we_o may_v put_v any_o stumble_a block_n and_o offence_n in_o the_o way_n either_o of_o our_o neighbour_n or_o of_o ourselves_o secondary_o to_o the_o matter_n of_o our_o neighbour_n as_o far_o as_o he_o may_v become_v unto_o we_o or_o we_o unto_o he_o a_o stumble_a block_n or_o offence_n second_o it_o be_v to_o be_v note_v that_o he_o do_v not_o proper_o speak_v of_o the_o offence_n of_o affection_n whereby_o we_o or_o our_o neighbour_n be_v provoke_v to_o anger_n afflict_a offend_a and_o alienate_v from_o we_o but_o of_o the_o offence_n of_o conscience_n whereby_o either_o our_o own_o conscience_n be_v wound_v by_o go_v against_o conscience_n or_o the_o neighbour_n be_v mislead_v into_o error_n or_o sin_n of_o conscience_n or_o he_o be_v already_o engage_v in_o error_n and_o sin_n of_o conscience_n be_v by_o we_o strengthen_v and_o confirm_v therein_o but_o we_o need_v also_o to_o take_v heed_n of_o the_o offence_n of_o affection_n and_o the_o hatred_n arise_v from_o they_o as_o much_o as_o possible_o may_v be_v according_a to_o the_o rule_n rom._n 12._o v._n 18._o if_o it_o be_v possible_a as_o much_o as_o lie_v in_o you_o live_v peaceable_o with_o all_o man_n yet_o not_o so_o neither_o that_o we_o give_v thereby_o a_o offence_n to_o our_o conscience_n and_o also_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o outward_a peace_n with_o man_n shall_v destroy_v and_o lose_v the_o inward_a peace_n of_o conscience_n three_o it_o be_v indubitabe_v hereby_o that_o the_o apostle_n require_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o we_o for_o our_o part_n give_v or_o put_v no_o occasion_n to_o fall_v in_o any_o man_n way_n which_o happen_v when_o we_o either_o commit_v that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o omit_v that_o which_o be_v good_a or_o abuse_v so_o our_o liberty_n in_o indiffent_a thing_n that_o the_o weak_a be_v scandalize_v at_o our_o example_n which_o be_v to_o say_v offend_v make_v worse_o thereby_o and_o mislead_v into_o error_n and_o sin_n but_o it_o be_v no_o way_n require_v from_o we_o that_o we_o for_o the_o avoid_n of_o such_o scandal_n and_o offence_n which_o other_o without_o cause_n either_o out_o of_o weakness_n or_o malice_n receive_v at_o we_o in_o do_v what_o be_v good_a and_o omit_v what_o be_v evil_a shall_v therefore_o omit_v that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o commit_v that_o which_o be_v evil_a for_o we_o must_v not_o do_v evil_a that_o good_a may_v come_v rom._n 3._o v._n 8._o not_o wound_v our_o own_o conscience_n that_o another_o man_n erroneous_a conscience_n may_v not_o be_v offend_v yea_o we_o need_v not_o neither_o forsake_v our_o offence_n of_o they_o that_o be_v weak_a in_o faith_n the_o apostle_n do_v apply_v in_o the_o word_n follow_v upon_o the_o meat_n which_o be_v fordidden_v in_o the_o law_n but_o be_v indifferent_a thing_n in_o the_o gospel_n i_o know_v say_v he_o and_o be_o persuade_v by_o the_o lord_n jesus_n that_o there_o be_v nothing_o not_o meat_n unclean_a common_a of_o itself_o but_o to_o he_o that_o before_o god_n if_o he_o eat_v be_v damn_v condemn_v viz._n of_o his_o own_o conscience_n because_o he_o eat_v not_o of_o faith_n for_o whatsoever_o be_v not_o of_o faith_n viz._n so_o that_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o they_o be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n or_o permit_v by_o god_n be_v sin_n this_o very_a same_o doctrine_n be_v repeat_v over_o again_o by_o the_o apostle_n 1_o cor._n 8._o where_o he_o appli_v it_o almost_o in_o like_a manner_n to_o meat_n offer_v to_o idol_n v._o 5._o concern_v the_o eat_n of_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v offer_v in_o sacrifice_n unto_o idol_n we_o know_v that_o a_o idol_n be_v nothing_o etc._n etc._n v._n 7._o howbeit_o there_o be_v not_o in_o every_o man_n that_o knowledge_n for_o some_o with_o conscience_n of_o the_o idol_n eat_v it_o as_o a_o thing_n offer_v unto_o a_o idol_n and_o their_o conscience_n be_v weak_a be_v defile_v etc._n etc._n v._n 9_o 10_o 11_o 12_o 13._o take_v heed_n lest_o by_o any_o mean_v this_o liberty_n of_o you_o become_v a_o stumble_a block_n to_o they_o that_o be_v weak_a for_o if_o any_o man_n see_v thou_o which_o have_v knowledge_n sit_v at_o table_n in_o the_o idol_n temple_n shall_v not_o the_o conscience_n of_o he_o which_o be_v weak_a be_v embolden_v to_o eat_v those_o thing_n which_o be_v offer_v to_o idol_n and_o through_o thy_o knowledge_n shall_v the_o weak_a brother_n perish_v for_o who_o christ_n die_v but_o when_o you_o sin_n so_o against_o the_o brethren_n and_o wound_v their_o weak_a conscience_n you_o sin_n against_o christ_n wherefore_o if_o meat_n make_v my_o brother_n to_o offend_v i_o will_v eat_v no_o flesh_n while_o the_o world_n stand_v lest_o i_o make_v my_o brother_n to_o offend_v by_o which_o doctrine_n of_o the_o apostle_n we_o may_v here_o easy_o understand_v what_o and_o how_o far_o we_o ought_v to_o judge_v in_o matter_n of_o religion_n and_o conscience_n judge_v this_o rather_o that_o no_o man_n put_v a_o stumble_a block_n or_o a_o occasion_n to_o fall_v in_o his_o brother_n way_n wherefore_o i._o err_a how_o far_o we_o may_v judge_v of_o the_o doctrine_n and_o religion_n of_o the_o err_a we_o must_v not_o judge_v the_o person_n whether_o they_o be_v damn_v before_o god_n or_o not_o but_o proper_o and_o principal_o the_o matter_n itself_o whether_o it_o be_v a_o article_n of_o faith_n or_o life_n of_o doctrine_n or_o worship_n and_o only_o so_o far_o and_o to_o this_o end_n that_o it_o may_v not_o become_v a_o stumble_a block_n and_o offence_n of_o conscience_n unto_o we_o and_o other_o but_o the_o person_n we_o may_v judge_v so_o far_o that_o we_o may_v avoid_v to_o give_v they_o the_o like_a offence_n or_o we_o ourselves_o to_o be_v offend_v at_o they_o ii_o and_o not_o only_o in_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v command_v or_o forbid_v by_o god_n to_o believe_v or_o to_o do_v and_o therefore_o be_v necessary_a but_o also_o which_o be_v in_o themselves_o free_a indifferent_a thing_n which_o be_v to_o say_v neither_o command_v nor_o forbid_v and_o therefore_o not_o necessary_a to_o do_v or_o to_o omit_v they_o which_o nevertheless_o we_o must_v judge_v thus_o far_o lest_o by_o our_o liberty_n we_o put_v a_o stumble_a block_n in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o weak_a whereby_o they_o may_v deal_v against_o their_o conscience_n have_v no_o knowledge_n of_o such_o liberty_n but_o hold_v they_o for_o necessary_a in_o their_o erroneous_a conscience_n or_o doubt_v of_o they_o iii_o be_v we_o must_v be_v so_o cautious_a in_o free_a indifferent_a thing_n because_o of_o the_o weak_a how_o much_o more_o deny_v or_o omit_v what_o god_n have_v ordain_v and_o command_v whereby_o we_o shall_v give_v yet_o a_o more_o dangerous_a offence_n first_o to_o our_o own_o conscience_n who_o have_v the_o knowledge_n thereof_o out_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o then_o to_o other_o whether_o they_o have_v the_o knowledge_n thereof_o or_o not_o not_o only_o to_o do_v against_o erroneus_fw-la or_o weak_a but_o against_o true-beleeving_a conscience_n and_o withal_o against_o god_n command_v itself_o iu._n but_o most_o of_o all_o when_o such_o false_a doctrine_n or_o religion_n which_o god_n have_v forbid_v be_v press_v upon_o we_o not_o only_o as_o sound_v and_o true_a but_o as_o necessary_a unto_o salvation_n or_o on_o the_o contrary_a when_o the_o true_a sound_a doctrine_n and_o worship_n which_o god_n have_v command_v be_v forbid_v and_o condemn_v not_o only_o as_o unnecessary_a or_o erroneous_a but_o even_o as_o heretical_a which_o also_o if_o we_o do_v confess_v or_o practise_v that_o and_o do_v deny_v or_o omit_v this_o against_o conscience_n will_v not_o only_o prove_v a_o common_a sin_n and_o offence_n to_o our_o and_o our_o neighbour_n conscience_n but_o also_o idolatry_n and_o a_o deny_v of_o god_n for_o since_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o give_v way_n that_o such_o thing_n which_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n leave_v free_a and_o indifferent_a unto_o we_o as_o for_o example_n the_o mosaical_a distinction_n of_o meat_n or_o the_o circumcision_n which_o be_v enjoin_v to_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n in_o the_o law_n shall_v be_v as_o necessary_a impose_v on_o we_o lest_o we_o may_v seek_v our_o salvation_n without_o christ_n gal._n 5_o v._o 1_o 2_o 3_o 4._o how_o much_o less_o than_o ought_v we_o to_o countenance_v those_o thing_n which_o god_n as_o much_o as_o in_o our_o conscience_n we_o may_v have_v knowledge_n of_o it_o be_v cry_v down_o for_o heretic_n condemn_v excommunicate_v shut_v out_o and_o cut_v off_o from_o the_o christian_a church_n and_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o saint_n that_o then_o we_o have_v not_o only_o good_a reason_n but_o also_o be_v in_o conscience_n bind_v and_o constrain_v of_o necessity_n and_o force_n to_o separate_v ourselves_o and_o withdraw_v from_o that_o church_n thus_o proceed_v with_o we_o and_o not_o consequent_o those_o who_o of_o necessity_n as_o excommunicate_v and_o reject_a man_n must_v separate_v themselves_o but_o those_o which_o do_v reject_v and_o force_v they_o to_o such_o a_o separation_n be_v proper_o guilty_a of_o the_o unjust_a uncharitable_a judge_v
