this_o resemblance_n which_o the_o creature_n have_v to_o god_n rather_o a_o likeness_n than_o a_o image_n for_o we_o know_v that_o a_o image_n be_v like_a to_o the_o thing_n itself_o in_o every_o respect_n as_o the_o image_n of_o a_o man_n seem_v to_o be_v a_o man_n the_o image_n of_o the_o sun_n or_o moon_n in_o the_o water_n seem_v to_o be_v the_o sun_n or_o moon_n itself_o but_o no_o creature_n seem_v to_o be_v god_n because_o it_o be_v unlike_a to_o god_n in_o more_o respect_n than_o it_o be_v like_a for_o a_o beast_n may_v be_v like_o a_o man_n in_o many_o respect_n as_o be_v a_o ape_n yet_o we_o do_v not_o say_v that_o it_o be_v the_o image_n of_o man_n because_o the_o unlikeness_n and_o difference_n be_v great_a than_o the_o likeness_n but_o to_o apply_v these_o thing_n to_o the_o matter_n in_o hand_n it_o will_v be_v here_o say_v why_o then_o do_v the_o scripture_n say_v that_o man_n be_v create_v according_a to_o the_o image_n of_o god_n we_o answer_v that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o endite_v the_o scripture_n have_v more_o regard_n to_o our_o capacity_n then_o to_o the_o exact_a propriety_n of_o speech_n and_o therefore_o call_v the_o likeness_n of_o man_n to_o god_n by_o the_o name_n of_o god_n image_n that_o he_o may_v distinguish_v it_o as_o be_v far_o great_a from_o the_o likeness_n which_o other_o creature_n have_v to_o god_n for_o as_o a_o man_n who_o have_v great_a power_n and_o authority_n then_o private_a man_n &_o therefore_o be_v in_o the_o scripture_n call_v god_n the_o man_n who_o have_v great_a strength_n than_o the_o woman_n and_o therefore_o be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o image_n of_o god_n whereas_o the_o woman_n be_v make_v the_o image_n of_o the_o man_n 7._o 1._o cor._n 11._o 7._o and_o so_o the_o rich_a noble_a learned_a usual_o take_v by_o divine_n write_v of_o man_n holiness_n three_o it_o may_v be_v use_v yet_o more_o special_o to_o signify_v not_o all_o the_o holiness_n of_o man_n but_o only_o that_o part_n of_o it_o whereby_o he_o resemble_v god_n more_o notable_o then_o in_o the_o other_o for_o as_o touch_v all_o those_o part_n of_o man_n holiness_n which_o have_v be_v declare_v in_o the_o first_o part_n of_o this_o treatise_n they_o can_v be_v proper_o say_v to_o be_v any_o part_n of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n because_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o god_n he_o be_v over_o all_o and_o therefore_o ackngwledge_v no_o manner_n of_o subjection_n to_o any_o neither_o any_o duty_n of_o subjection_n as_o affiance_n hope_v fear_v
although_o he_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o any_o supernatural_a grace_n bestow_v on_o he_o to_o this_o we_o answer_v confess_v that_o the_o true_a illumination_n of_o the_o mind_n can_v not_o be_v sever_v from_o freedom_n of_o will_n but_o yet_o that_o neither_o the_o one_o nor_o the_o other_o can_v be_v attain_v unto_o by_o the_o natural_a inclination_n of_o the_o will_v who_o although_o he_o may_v by_o natural_a mean_n get_v a_o superficial_a and_o as_o it_o be_v usual_o call_v a_o historical_a knowledge_n of_o all_o the_o point_n of_o religion_n yet_o be_v it_o impossible_a for_o he_o heart_n be_v full_a of_o atheism_n unbelief_n and_o all_o sinfulness_n in_o the_o which_o for_o the_o most_o part_n they_o be_v more_o wilful_a stubborn_a and_o desperate_a than_o they_o who_o be_v altogether_o void_a of_o knowledge_n neither_o indeed_o be_v it_o any_o marvel_n that_o a_o natural_a man_n shall_v be_v unable_a to_o resist_v and_o offer_v violence_n to_o his_o nature_n to_o deny_v himself_o and_o all_o worldly_a pleasure_n to_o forsake_v his_o sin_n which_o be_v more_o pleasant_a to_o he_o then_o life_n itself_o and_o all_o for_o hope_v of_o eternal_a salvation_n whereof_o he_o make_v they_o capable_a of_o holiness_n we_o answer_v in_o one_o word_n to_o all_o these_o doubt_n that_o the_o scripture_n bid_v man_n to_o choose_v good_a and_o become_v holy_a do_v command_v nothing_o but_o that_o which_o be_v in_o their_o power_n to_o do_v and_o therefore_o do_v not_o mean_a that_o man_n shall_v go_v about_o to_o change_v their_o own_o corrupt_a nature_n and_o endue_v themselves_o with_o spiritual_a grace_n but_o only_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v careful_a in_o use_v the_o mean_n of_o holiness_n as_o namely_o the_o abstain_v from_o those_o sin_n whereunto_o they_o be_v give_v the_o avoid_n of_o the_o occasion_n of_o they_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n &_o the_o do_v of_o whatsoever_o be_v effectual_a for_o this_o purpose_n and_o may_v be_v do_v by_o a_o unregenerate_a man_n but_o whenas_o man_n be_v altogether_o careless_a of_o their_o own_o salvation_n contemn_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o all_o other_o mean_n of_o it_o yea_o add_v one_o god_n in_o all_o these_o man_n have_v freewill_n be_v able_a of_o himself_o to_o incline_v himself_o to_o the_o do_v or_o not_o do_v of_o any_o of_o they_o as_o daily_a experience_n do_v plain_o prove_v but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o he_o in_o the_o other_o kind_n of_o thing_n either_o in_o choose_v good_a or_o in_o reject_v evil_a yet_o he_o have_v some_o freedom_n in_o these_o thing_n also_o first_o of_o good_a then_o of_o evil_a in_o the_o good_a thing_n we_o be_v to_o consider_v the_o outward_a action_n and_o the_o inward_a grace_n in_o the_o outward_a action_n a_o carnal_a man_n have_v freewill_n be_v able_a to_o incline_v himself_o to_o the_o do_v or_o not_o do_v of_o it_o for_o example_n a_o carnal_a man_n may_v hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n or_o not_o hear_v worship_n god_n or_o not_o worship_v he_o relieve_v the_o necessity_n of_o the_o church_n or_o not_o do_v it_o suffer_v martyrdom_n for_o the_o profession_n of_o the_o gospel_n or_o perform_v the_o outward_a action_n of_o any_o christian_n duty_n but_o as_o touch_v the_o inward_a grace_n it_o be_v not_o in_o his_o power_n to_o get_v it_o but_o only_o to_o leave_v it_o as_o he_o can_v endue_v his_o own_o mind_n with_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o god_n with_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n with_o the_o love_n of_o the_o godly_a and_o therefore_o his_o outward_a action_n be_v but_o a_o paint_a sheath_n or_o sepulchre_n not_o effectual_a to_o his_o own_o salvation_n yea_o in_o truth_n not_o to_o be_v esteem_v good_a again_o a_o unregenerate_a man_n may_v of_o himself_o seek_v and_o get_v inward_a grace_n as_o some_o knowledge_n of_o god_n justice_n temperance_n chastity_n patience_n and_o such_o other_o yet_o this_o do_v not_o make_v he_o to_o have_v freewill_n to_o good_a for_o first_o in_o the_o question_n of_o freewill_n this_o word_n good_a signify_v not_o any_o one_o or_o a_o few_o particular_a grace_n or_o action_n but_o a_o general_a holiness_n
